San Lameer Estate

Welcome to the winter edition of the San Lameer magazine.
In this edition, Pine Pinaar reflects on the year so far and takes a moment to thank all the people who contribute to the smooth running and success of the Estate, from the security and maintenance teams to the groundskeepers and everyone in between. We sometimes forget it takes many staff members to ensure the success of an estate.
The Countryline team considers the progress made in conservation on San Lameer since 1974, their strategies for long-term maintenance of the Estate in terms of indigenous flora and sustainability, and looks at possible solutions for the challenges that winter brings.
Another exciting update as the 2025 Crowned Eagle juvenile matures. Jacques Sellschop observes and reports on the progress being made as the parents rear the young bird to become a self-sufficient adult soon. As always, it is interesting to read the journey of the young one and a good reminder of how endangered they are!
In this edition, we get to know two of our local creatives, Emile J.C. Dellieu and Mike Orr, as they share some of their experiences which led to producing some beautiful and inspiring pieces of literature, from epic fiction to humorous poetry.
Lastly, Executive Chef Ncedo and Food & Beverage Manager, Johan Loots, give us some comfort food recipes as we go into this winter. Look out for the hearty butternut soup and the coffee cake with syrup and caramel topping, YUM!
We hope you enjoy the read. Until the next edition …
Lorinda Scott and the FabMags team
ATTENTION: PLEASE NOTE
Dear Homeowners,
Please note that we only distribute the printed San Lameer Magazine on the Estate itself and not via post. An electronic copy will be forwarded to every homeowner via email. Should you want to receive a hard copy of the magazine, you are welcome to contact Jolanda Cloete at marketing@sanlameer.co.za and we will be happy to send you a copy via the post.

As winter settles gently over our beautiful South Coast, there is something quite special about this time of year at San Lameer Estate. The pace softens ever so slightly, the mornings feel crisper, and the Estate takes on a calm and peaceful rhythm that reminds us all why this place is so extraordinary. While guests and homeowners enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of San Lameer during the winter months, I believe it is important to pause and recognise the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this Estate what it is every single day. An Estate of this size and standard does not run on infrastructure alone; it runs on people. Dedicated people. Passionate people. Loyal people.
From our security teams who work around the clock to ensure everyone feels safe and secure, to the maintenance and horticultural staff who keep our grounds pristine throughout every season, from reception and administration to housekeeping, golf operations, hospitality, leisure, rentals, and every department in between, each staff member plays a meaningful role in the success of San Lameer.
One of the greatest privileges of my position is working alongside such an incredible team. Many of our staff members have been part of the San Lameer family for years, and their commitment, resilience, and professionalism continue to inspire me daily. Their work often happens quietly in the background, but without them, the magic of San Lameer simply would not exist.
What makes our Estate truly unique is not only our natural beauty, world-class facilities, or rich history – it is our people and the culture of teamwork that exists here. We face challenges together, celebrate successes together, and continuously strive to improve together. That spirit of unity is something I am deeply proud of.
Over the years, we have seen San Lameer evolve and grow in many ways. From ongoing infrastructure improvements and conservation efforts to community initiatives and estate enhancements, every achievement has been the result of collaboration and shared purpose. No single person manages an Estate alone. It takes a committed team with a shared vision and genuine care for this special place we call home.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to our homeowners, residents, visitors, and board members for your continued support and trust. Together, we continue to build an Estate that not only maintains its exceptional standards but also preserves the warm sense of community that defines San Lameer. As we move further into 2026, our focus remains on maintaining excellence while continuing to invest in the future of the Estate, always with our people at the centre of it all. Whether it is through sustainability initiatives, estate improvements, community upliftment, or staff wellness, we remain committed to creating an environment where both people and nature can thrive.
Winter at San Lameer has a way of reminding us to slow down and appreciate the quieter moments. For me, it is also a time of reflection and gratitude; gratitude for the remarkable team I have the honour of working with every day.
To every staff member across the Estate: thank you. Your hard work, dedication, and pride in what you do never go unnoticed. You are the heartbeat of San Lameer.
From my family to yours, I wish you a warm, peaceful, and memorable winter season.

For someone with a deep appreciation for the natural environment, working at San Lameer is something I never take for granted. I remain grateful to the original custodian of this land, Colonel G.H. Langeler, who recognised its extraordinary ecological value long before environmental conservation became a mainstream priority. He insisted that any future custodians uphold the same principles of environmental protection and responsible stewardship.
When Sanlam acquired the property in 1974, this ethos was formally entrenched through the adoption of the 60/40 development principle, whereby only 40% of the Estate could be developed while 60% remained protected in its natural state. This philosophy laid the foundation for the environmentally conscious Estate enjoyed by residents and visitors today.
In 1996, the Estate was officially registered as a Conservancy and, a year later, recognised by the Parks Board as a site of conservation significance. This recognition stemmed largely from the remarkable biodiversity found within the Estate, including wetlands, grasslands, coastal dune systems and tropical coastal forests. Few residential estates in South Africa can boast such ecological diversity within a relatively compact 200-hectare footprint. The stewardship of the conservancy carries significant responsibility. Environmental management decisions are guided by historical best practice together
with the expertise of independent environmental consultants who serve on the Environmental Committee and report quarterly to the Homeowners Association. Achieving a balance between ecological preservation and sustainable human activity remains central to all management decisions.
To protect the ecological integrity of the Estate, several key environmental priorities continue to guide operations:
• Eradication of invasive alien vegetation to encourage indigenous regeneration.
• Preventing chemical runoff into rivers, dams and wetlands.
• Monitoring wildlife populations to ensure sustainable coexistence.
• Enforcing low speed limits to reduce wildlife-related vehicle incidents.
• Maintaining quiet hours and prohibiting fireworks, excessive noise and intrusive lighting.
• Prohibiting domestic pets to reduce predation and disease transmission.
• Ensuring Estate by-laws remain aligned with broader South African environmental legislation.
Through continued adherence to these principles, San Lameer remains one of South Africa’s most desirable destinations for permanent residents and holidaymakers alike, while preserving the original conservation vision for future generations.
Turning to local weather conditions, early projections from the South African Weather Service suggest South Africa may transition from a weak La Niña phase during early 2026 toward
a developing El Niño pattern by the 2026/2027 summer season. Historically, such a transition has been associated with hotter, drier conditions across much of the country.Recent local rainfall figures already reflect this trend. Over the past seven months, the area has received only around 55% of its long-term average rainfall. As custodians of a large and environmentally sensitive Estate, it is essential that we continue adapting proactively to these changing climatic conditions.
One response has been the increased use of drought-tolerant indigenous and climate-resilient plant species throughout the Estate. Aloes, ornamental grasses, succulents and hardy indigenous shrubs continue to provide visual appeal while reducing water demand. In addition, the Estate’s mulching programme plays an important role in retaining soil moisture and improving overall plant health during prolonged dry periods.
As we move into the cooler winter months, operational focus within the landscaping and environmental departments naturally shifts toward seasonal preparation work, including garden bed rejuvenation, waterway maintenance, controlled grassland burns and machinery servicing.
Winter also reveals a quieter and uniquely beautiful side of the Estate. Indigenous succulents begin flowering, the cooler climate settles in, and reduced visitor numbers create the peaceful atmosphere that many residents and guests have come to cherish. We warmly welcome visitors during this season and encourage them to experience the tranquillity and natural beauty that make San Lameer such a special place.

Modern life doesn’t really switch off anymore; it just changes screens.
Work follows you home. Messages don’t wait. Even rest starts to feel scheduled. Somewhere along the way, holidays stopped being a break and became another thing to “get right”.
That’s why a winter escape to San Lameer feels different. Because it quietly removes the noise. Not dramatically or all at once, but just enough.
There’s no urgency to wake up early. No competition for space. No itinerary you feel guilty for not following.
Time stretches again. Morning coffee lasts longer than it should. Conversations don’t get cut short, and the day doesn’t feel like it’s slipping away before it’s even begun.
At San Lameer Estate, you start to notice how unusual that feeling is.
To sit without checking your phone. To walk without a destination. To spend time together without needing a reason. It’s not about escaping life; it’s about stepping out of its constant pace. And that’s the real shift.
You don’t come back with a long list of things you did. You come back feeling like you actually stopped. Rested, not just entertained. Connected, not just occupied.
Because in the end, the value of a holiday isn’t measured by how much you fit in, it’s measured by how much you’re able to leave behind.

than 20 years,

By the middle of May 2026, the Crowned Eagle juvenile was still alive and well. Its development to this date has followed the same patterns we have observed with the Estate eagles for the past 20 years.
With the juvenile being in the region of six months old at present, the parents are starting to wean it off their meals-onwheels service to force it to learn its own
hunting skills. While the mother initially feeds it on the nest, that progresses to the point after about two months when the adults simply drop food onto the nest and leave it to feed itself. By the five-month stage, the adults drop food away from the nest, forcing the juvenile to leave its comfort zone and feed either on a branch distant from the nest or just on the ground under a tree far from the nest. That is the stage we are observing at present. Then, the gaps increase
between food deliveries by the adults, leaving the juvenile hungry and howling incessantly for some feeding support. This week, I watched the adult female drop an item of prey (probably a dassie carcass) on the verges of the 17th fairway, after which the juvenile dropped to the ground to feed on it. On one occasion last week, I saw the juvenile sitting high up in an Eucalyptus tree, but on the other side of the R61 highway that runs past San Lameer.

5.
It was calling for food, and this considerable distance from the nest indicated its readiness to explore further afield in the quest for food. Ultimately, we would expect it to hunt independently in the farmlands in that area, before it finally leaves the area to make a home of its own.
Such pictures as I have been able to take of it hiding among the branches of the nesting tree, indicate that it is in good shape. It spends time particularly in the environs of the 17th fairway, which offers a showpiece of San Lameer’s beautiful trees and flowers. It is worth taking a walk along the 17th early on a winter’s afternoon just to appreciate Nature’s beauty and to have a chance of spotting the juvenile.
Recently, some people have asked about the rings on the juvenile’s legs

and whether they are an invasive hindrance to its comfort. South Africa’s leading raptor expert, Dr Shane McPherson, whose team attached the rings to the current juvenile, dispelled any fear of discomfort for the bird. He explained that the rings are professionally designed and constructed to address the circumference of the eagles’ legs when they are fully grown.
The attachment is done with a device that provides uniformity, totally independent of any judgement calls by the person attaching the ring. The bright red ring on the left leg of our juvenile clearly shows the letters TGR (code) lodged in a national database that allows anyone encountering the eagle in the next two to three years to easily identify its location of origin and age. That plastic ring is biodegradable,
and with its ultimate disintegration, the information can still be found on the permanent aluminium ring on the right foot. This is important for researchers since the rather rare and threatened Crowned Eagles do suffer demise from hitting electricity cables, inadvertently being poisoned, or simply being shot by idiots who do not realise the severe penalties for killing these birds.
Recently, a mother and chick both died from poisoning in the Durban area, and we have to be alert to the increasing number of lethal pesticides being used by farmers to control monkey populations that decimate their Macadamia crops at the flowering stage. Monkeys are prominent on the eagles’ hunting register, and a poisoned monkey carcass can invoke considerable collateral damage to crop-protection management.

Two people who turned their stories into art.
Bracing the Sky: A Life Rewritten
From the cockpit to collapse, Emile J. C. Dellieu shares a journey through loss, resilience, and the love that anchored him.
Emile J. C. Dellieu was born in Belgium, raised in South Africa, and spent much of his professional life working across the world. His career carried him through the skies and into the classroom: an Airline Transport Pilot Licence, a Flight Instructor’s Rating, an LLB, an LLM, and diplomas in both Electronics and International Business Communications. The disciplines were many, but the approach was always the same: structured, precise, and deeply committed.
That discipline was tested when his body, once reliable, suddenly failed him. A medical condition arrived without warning, stripping away independence and identity in a single stroke. Doctors treated the physical symptoms, but nothing prepared him for the psychological collapse that followed. Self-sufficiency gave way to dependence on his wife, and at times even his children. Purpose dissolved. The will to fight drained away. He began to believe he had no value and that he had become a burden. Thoughts of ending it surfaced.
Only one force kept him anchored: his wife’s unwavering love. Her presence became the line between despair and survival. Out of that crucible came Bracing the Sky, a work born from the recognition that while bodies are treated, minds are often abandoned to face collapse alone. Alongside this memoir stands another creation: Opiria Vitanox
Unlike the intimate struggle of Bracing the Sky, this work of fiction thrusts its

characters into a world far harsher than our own. Survival is not expected; it is fought for. Every choice carries irreversible consequences. The narrative asks a single, piercing question: what remains of a person when everything that once defined them has been stripped away?
It is a story of endurance, sacrifice, and the refusal to surrender, even when hope no longer points the way. Meaning is not
handed down; it is carved from collapse.

Opiria Vitanox will be released in July 2026, offering readers a journey into resilience and the human will under relentless pressure.
In memoir and fiction alike, Dellieu explores what remains when identity is stripped away and how meaning is carved from collapse.

Mike Orr (Miroslav Oravec) shares his journey from engineer to poet, bringing laughter and light verse to San Lameer.
Mike Orr, the pen name of Miroslav Oravec, has a story shaped by resilience, reinvention, and a deep appreciation for language. He arrived in South Africa in October 1968 as a 25-year-old political refugee from Slovakia, then part of Czechoslovakia. With no formal training in English, he taught himself the language from scratch, an achievement that would later underpin his creative pursuits.
Professionally, Mike built a successful career as a civil engineer, dedicating his working life to the field. It was only upon retirement that he discovered a new calling: poetry. His earliest works were written in Slovak, often humorous pieces composed for friends’ birthdays and festive occasions. Encouraged by his own creativity, he began experimenting with English poetry and was pleasantly surprised by his ability to express himself in a second language.
In 2006, he joined the Pretoria Writers’ Circle, a turning point that transformed writing into a regular and rewarding practice. The group meets monthly, with members sharing their work aloud, offering constructive critique, and setting themes for the following session. Many of Mike’s poems were born out of these creative exercises, blending discipline with imagination.
His contributions to the San Lameer Library reflect both his versatility and his love of form. His collections include a range of poetic styles, from traditional
sonnets – his personal favourite – to limericks and other varied stanza structures. Despite the diversity of form, one element remains consistent: humour. Around 95% of his poetry is light-hearted, crafted with punchlines that echo the structure of a well-told joke.
Describing himself as someone who “writes comedy that happens to rhyme”, Mike views art primarily as a form of communication. Specifically, the communication of aesthetics and humour. His work falls within the tradition of “light verse”, a genre that embraces playfulness and creative freedom, even allowing for the occasional cliché as part of its charm.

His two donated books, With a Cup of Coffee and Three Rs, are presented as engaging coffee table collections, combining poetry with cartoons and photographs.
The first features 57 humorous poems, while the second offers 77 spirited and irreverent pieces. Together, they showcase a distinctive voice that is witty, approachable, and unapologetically entertaining.
Mike’s passion for poetry is deeply rooted in his upbringing. His mother, a Slovak language teacher, instilled in him a love of reading and verse from an early age, while his father also turned to poetry later in life, writing for children. Today, Mike continues this legacy, embracing writing not just as a hobby but as a joyful and enduring expression of creativity.

We find ourselves always looking for something to eat or drink to stay warm in winter. Our Executive Chef Ncedo “warmly” says, “There is no better way to keep warm this winter than with some hearty homemade soups. Not only does preparing these dishes warm our homes, but it also warms our hearts and tickles our noses with the aromas that go through the kitchen into the living areas of our homes.” He has generously shared a simple butternut soup recipe with us and invites you to join us and enjoy some of his winter dishes, which we will be serving at our Lagoon restaurant.

Here you will meet Sikhona Mfeka, who has joined our Food and Beverage Management team. Sikhona comes with a diploma in Ecotourism and 13 years of experience in Hospitality under his belt. He has worked in hotels across the country and has extensive tour guide experience, having trained at Umkhuze Game Reserve and worked at Drakensburg Canopy tours. We welcome Sikhona and look forward to working with him. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our visitors, homeowners, and villa guests for their ongoing support. Remember to take care and keep warm during this cold season.

Asuccessful real estate journey is dependent on a transparent relationship between sellers and their agent. Both parties work towards the common goal of selling the property for the best outcome possible.
Select an estate agent whose advice you can trust, who makes you feel confident and who you feel comfortable working with. When interviewing an agent, ask for their sales track record, years of experience and how many homes they’ve sold in your area.
Ask for recommendations from friends and family who have recently bought or sold property.
Traits of a good agent:
• Provides a realistic price assessment based on current market conditions.
• Your agent should be someone you feel comfortable with, who listens to your needs and who communicates clearly and promptly.
• Offers a level of expertise that will assist you in getting your home sold more quickly and for a better price.
• Has a reputation for honesty, integrity and good communication skills.

• Is knowledgeable about all the current marketing practices.
• Understands the local market and also the ins and outs of the area, including schools and amenities.
• Understands your specific needs, property values, recent sales and the factors that influence market conditions.

• Have successfully concluded several property sales in your area.
• Have a strong network of connections and market experience.
• Your agent should also be affiliated with a reputable real estate company.
Agent Sheryl Schilz is a Multi-award-winning agent with 24 years’ experience in marketing and selling real estate on the Hibiscus Coast. She has been approved by San Lameer HOA to list and sell properties in the Estate and would love to assist sellers in marketing and selling their homes.
