From the COMMS DESK
Months of careful planning, dedication, and teamwork culminated in a highly successful festive season for Prince's Grant. The reward for this hard work was evident in the Estate’s seamless operation with only minor challenges experienced during an otherwise exceptional holiday period. The golf course was a standout feature, presented in immaculate condition and offering players an outstanding golfing experience.
Golfers consistently praised the course, enjoying every round against the backdrop of the Estate’s natural beauty.
Festive cheer extended far beyond the fairways. Guests and homeowners were spoilt with a variety of activities designed for all ages, hosted at the Lodge, Conference Centre, and around the main swimming pool. These spaces became vibrant hubs of laughter, relaxation, and celebration
throughout the season. A significant improvement this year was the enhanced water infrastructure. The upgraded filtration system, coupled with the addition of a new borehole, ensured an uninterrupted water supply during the busiest period of the year; a marked improvement from previous festive seasons and a key contributor to the smooth running of the Estate.
The Lodge’s pub and golf course buzzed with energy as holidaymakers embraced the festive spirit, creating a warm, lively atmosphere that defined the season at Prince’s Grant. None of this would have been possible without the incredible commitment of our staff. Across every department, teams worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the front lines to ensure guests and homeowners enjoyed a memorable festive experience. Their dedication and professionalism were the true foundation of the season’s success.
From the COMMERCIAL MANAGER
We have come bounding into a new year with our 2026 plans and ideas nearing completion, and it is shaping up to be another fantastic year. We are introducing a few new concepts to the monthly events schedule while building on last year’s successes. I’m pleased to share an update on the Commercial Portfolio at Prince’s Grant, as well as the Lodge’s performance in the final quarter of 2025.
Staffing & Leadership Updates
We experienced some challenges in the Duty Manager leadership roles when Sandile and Andrew departed with Prince’s Grant last year. Both were exceptional, generously sharing their knowledge and guidance with the team. While we always knew their tenure might be short-term, we had hoped it would last longer than a few months; however, we did not rush to find their replacements.
A huge thank you goes to Niel, who covered extra hours in the department; Candice, for stepping away from reception to assist on the service floor; Sam, for ensuring the back office responsibilities never missed a beat with the added pressure on everyone; and Evashini, for always staying on top of operations and sending timely updates. This period played an important role in shaping the team and honing their leadership skills.
We have welcomed Suren Nagusser and Kerin Ann Cavie to the team and have already noticed their positive impact in championing Lodge operations, service standards, and mentoring the service teams. We are confident we have secured two formidable managers who bring a wealth of knowledge and energy. We look forward to a long and successful relationship.
Our focus remains on succession planning and ensuring nothing is overlooked. As we move into 2026, training and development will remain a primary focus.
Food & Beverage
The summer menu was launched successfully with an improved design printed on foam board, which performed exceptionally well against the condensation issues of 2024. This is the right approach moving forward, with softer edges and tones planned for the Winter Menu launching in May 2026.
Duty Manager Roles & Champion Responsibilities
• Niel Findlay – Senior Duty Manager (Admin)
• Suren Nagusser – Duty Manager (Bar)
The chefs are reworking the weekly lunch specials, and we aim to introduce a quarterly special menu to run alongside the à la carte options.
Season Wrap-Up
Looking back at the whirlwind of the festive season, I want to congratulate the entire team on an incredible job. Thank you also to all residents and guests who joined the Lodge’s festivities and special functions. Whilst there were a few minor hiccups, these pale in comparison to the joy and excitement experienced throughout the season. Notes have been made to ensure continual improvement and to elevate the Prince’s Grant experience next year.
Commercial Financial Performance
This period was somewhat unusual, with several factors affecting financial performance. Stock prices were volatile, and while the KZN hospitality sector experienced increased busyness over the season, consumer spend was largely in line with 2024 figures.
Department Snapshots – December 2025
Food & Beverage: The department showed growth by 4.06% compared to last year.
Young guests enjoyed the poolside playground; while entertainment and activities were extra special, including an amazing animal show, daily crafts, family games, and even a visit from Santa on Christmas Eve.
Accommodation: Our focus on increasing occupancy and positioning Prince’s Grant as a destination hotspot paid off, with turnover growth of 2.13% and a massive 11.4% occupancy growth year-on-year. This year, we aim to balance growth in both turnover and occupancy.
Unfortunately, our Carols by Candlelight had to be moved from the 6th Dam due to rain, but we were still treated to a fantastic performance by a talented trio, featuring a French horn. For many, including myself, the French horn was a first-time experience and truly brought the Christmas spirit to life.
Golf: Exceptional results, with growth in rounds played and Pro Shop sales. Some days in December saw nearly 200 players on the course
– congratulations to the entire golf team!

From the CAPTAIN’S NOTEBOOK
Dear Members
If December taught us anything at Prince’s Grant, it’s that golfers will endure wind, sun, family visits, and even their own scorecards
– but never a slow tee sheet! We had a truly bumper festive season, and I’m excited to share a brief roundup of the good, the busy, and the bits we’ll be improving.
DECEMBER AT A GLANCE (THE QUICK READ)
Year-on-year results:
• Rounds Played: 3,744 + 9.9%
• Green Fee Revenue: + 10.9%
• Pro Shop Revenue: + 50.3%
• Pro Shop Retail: + 60.1%
• Visitor Rounds: + 7.0%
• Member Rounds: + 25.7%
THE COURSE: THE BEST IN YEARS
The course is currently in, arguably, the best shape in recent memory. This wasn’t just noticed, it was declared! Notably, Guy Smith commented that he “could not recall the course ever being in better condition”. High praise, indeed.
DECEMBER COMPETITIONS
All December comps were well-supported and well-received, always pleasing during the silly-season rush.
The winners of the major competitions were:
Founders Cup: Gordon and Jenny Christie, 84pts
Baiocchi Cup: Ang Starkey, 40pts
Mug of Mugs: Basil Moodley, 71nett c/o
North vs South: South 9–7
PRE-BOOKING & ACCESS: WE’RE TUNING IT
A few highlights:
• Greens are rolling beautifully
• Mole damage has significantly reduced
• New red, white, and yellow hazard stakes installed course-wide
• Consistent unsolicited compliments from members and visitors
Huge credit to Pierre and the STM team, your work is showing and appreciated.
We had some friction around tee access with a few members block-booking weeks in advance. This created limited availability for others, leading to frustration.
We addressed this in two steps:
• Introduced a R250 no-show fee
• Result: more timely cancellations and better access
A revised December booking model for 2026 will be tabled at the
February Committee Meeting. The intention is simple: fair access for all members, especially during peak periods.
A MOMENT OF HERITAGE
On 13 December 2025, Club President Mike Keyser unveiled a commemorative plaque on the 15th tee in honour of Guy Smith, founder and developer of Prince’s Grant. A fitting tribute to a man whose vision we walk and play upon every day.
COURSE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: BUNKERS!
Now for some GREAT news: We’re officially starting our bunker refurbishment programme! We will begin with the bunkers in front of Hole 5 and Hole 17 and then begin working through the rest of the course over the coming seasons, prioritising strategic and high-traffic bunkers first.
• Better drainage and fewer washouts after rain
• Cleaner aesthetics and more defined faces
• More consistent sand playability
• Easier maintenance and fewer repairs
• Reduced sand usage over time
• Less contamination from soil and stone
• A system already proven at Fancourt, Woodhill, Dainfern, Benoni
CC and others
Why Upgrade Our Bunkers?
The new system delivers:
Bottom line for members:
Better bunkers to look at, better bunkers to play from, and better value over the long term.
TRIMMING OF TREES & OVERGROWN AREAS
Several areas of the course have become heavily overgrown, creating shade that damages playing surfaces. Approval has now been granted by the DFFE to cut back these sections, and work will begin in the coming weeks. While we appreciate the passion
of our more conservation-minded residents, this selective trimming is essential for the long-term health of the course and to prevent costly damage in the future.
FINAL WORD
The December 2025 period showcased strong performance across course conditioning, golf utilisation, retail operations and competitions, supported by clear improvements in systems and management. With the proposed budget and training initiatives, we are wellpositioned for operational and strategic strength going into 2026.
To our members: THANK YOU for your patience during the busiest time of the year, and for your continued support, humour, and loyalty to our club.
The Prince’s Grant Golf Committee always acts with the best interests of our members at heart. And, as always, please remember this is “the way life should be lived”.
Warm regards,
André de Waal Golf Captain

SOUP WITH CARROT-TOP PESTO
WORDS GRANNY MOUSE COUNTRY HOUSE & SPA
Serves 4
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 x 800g butternut or pumpkin
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 2 tbsp garam masala
• 1 tbsp yellow mustard seeds
• 1 tbsp chilli flakes
• 10g fresh curry leaves
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 3 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 x 5cm piece fresh ginger, grated
• 2 tbsp fresh turmeric, grated
• 4 large carrots, peeled and sliced
• 1 x 500ml chicken or vegetable stock
• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• cultured coconut yoghurt, for serving (optional)
• 1 tsp garam masala spice
For the carrot-top pesto, blend:
• 30g carrot-tops (or Italian parsley)
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 1/2 lime, juiced
METHOD:
1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Halve the butternut/pumpkin, remove the seeds and set aside. Place butternut/ pumpkin on a baking tray and top with the cinnamon, garam masala, mustard seeds, chilli flakes, and curry leaves. Drizzle with olive oil and roast until soft and tender, about 40 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, cook the onion, garlic, ginger, and turmeric in a large saucepan until fragrant. Add the carrots and cook for 10 minutes. Then add the stock and bring to a simmer. Cook until the carrots are almost soft.
3. Once the butternut/pumpkin is soft, scoop out the flesh and add to the saucepan. Stir until smooth. Cook until the carrots are soft. Serve the soup with the seed sprinkle, pesto, and cultured coconut.
4. To make the seed sprinkle, toss the butternut/pumpkin seeds in the remaining olive oil and the garam masala spice. Roast until golden and crunchy.
Roasting the squash in the skin adds a caramelised flavour, while the flesh thickens the soup and gives it body without you having to blend it.
Voted Best Plumber 3 Years in a row!
