Spring Gardening Ideas
Below are some “bright” pick-me-ups for your end-of-winter gardens.
Clair’s Spring Suggestions
Pruning time! Now is the time to prune old woody stems, dried flower heads and all plants that are looking sad after winter. Cut out all old and dead wood from trees and shrubs. This will encourage new growth.
Prune off all old stems, leaves and dead flower heads. Indoor pot plants miss out on rainwater so, when possible, collect some to water them.
Prune all winter-flowering shrubs. Make sure you mulch, especially with your leaf litter.
Fertilise before mulching. August winds can be cruel, so monitor watering. Continue to fertilise all pots and indoor pot plants once a month.

Scadoxus puniceus (Paintbrush Lily)
This is one of South Africa’s most magnificent bulbous plants. This lovely plant is available at specialist indigenous nurseries. I encourage

you NOT to purchase them from alongside the road. Many of these plants are removed from the wild.
Tetradenia riparia (Wild Ginger)
This shrub is part of the Salvia family and its leaves have the aromatic characteristics of this family. I love picking it for a vase if I have enough flowers. Otherwise, its soft lilac/ purple plumes are so pretty in an otherwise sad after-winter garden.
Senecio barbertonicus
This plant’s bright yellow flowers attract many insects. The adult painted lady butterfly feeds on its nectar. It is drought-resistant and hardy and needs to be trimmed back to keep them looking tidy.

Ansellia africana (Leopard Orchid)
I have taken slips or pieces of this plant from friends and propagated it very successfully. Planted in a pot or growing in a tree, its rewarding flowers are beautiful. It also has a lovely soft scent. The plant is said to ward off lightning when planted at homesteads. Happy spring gardening!

PGNAIT 2023 - May
Prince’s Grant’s premier national amateur event! This was our
second hosting of the event since the five-year hiatus due to the course reconstruction and COVID-19.
This year’s winner, Stals Swart, battled it out to finish on an impressive score of 2 under par after 72 holes, fending off Astin Arthur and last year’s champion, Jordan Wessels, by one shot with
three impressive birdies on the back nine.
A huge thanks to all who were involved in putting this event together, as well as our generous sponsors who really made this event a success.
PGNAIT CHAMPION STALS SWART WITH CLUB PRESIDENT MIKE KIESER
KZN Open Strokeplay 2023
This was the first hosting of the provincial trophy at Prince’s Grant. With an impressive field of more than 100 players, the tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to rain on day one. Jordan Wessels won the tournament in an exciting finish by one shot with a brilliant score of 7 under par, proving again his liking of the course. A massive thanks to our greenkeeper and his staff for presenting championship-level conditions for the week of these two tournaments. We look forward to the return of this event in 2024.

The 29th playing of our Club Championship, this is the highlight member event of the calendar year.

After great weather and good scores on day one, some early morning rain set the tone for day two, where rain and tough wind made scoring tricky.

Club Competitions and Member Events
Two club majors have been played this winter, the Bodasing Memorial Trophy and the President’s Trophy. This year’s Bodasing Trophy was won by Brendan and Anette King, and the President’s Trophy was won by Basil and Mogie Moodley and Brendan and Anette King.
Our Wednesday Meat Competitions are individual Stableford, played every Wednesday afternoon (what a way to break up the work week!). It’s open to all golfers with an official HNA Handicap, so make a booking and enjoy the beauty Prince’s Grant has to offer.

KZNLGA Championship
This August, we hosted KZNLGA’s MidAm, Seniors and Juniors Championship, where the top lady amateur golfers from across the country battled it out for the Championship.
Great weather on day one showed great scoring, with a few of the gold division shooting in the low 70s, however early morning wind let the course show its teeth. Well played to all the winners in their division, and thank you to KZNLGA for hosting a great event at PG. We hope to continue this partnership and grow women’s golf in KZN.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY Regulations Relating to Swimming Pools
As we welcome the first signs of spring and begin to imagine long, lazy days at the pool, this article is designed to ensure that these days are both pleasurable and safe.
To this end, I would like to bring to your attention regulations regarding pool safety. These are specified in SANS 10400 part D4 and a link has been provided at the end of this article to KwaDukuza’s Swimming Pool Indemnity and Disclaimer Form. These regulations apply not only to Prince’s Grant but to all of South Africa. SANS
10400 D4 stipulates that the owners of any site that contains a swimming pool need to ensure that access to their pool is controlled. If they fail to comply with the regulation, they will be guilty of an offence. The requirement of section D stipulates that a wall or fence needs to be provided by the pool owner to ensure that no person can have access to the pool from any street, public place or neighbouring site.
Access can be controlled through a self-closing gate (which needs to open
outwards). Alternatively, a building can serve as part of such a wall or fence. There are very specific requirements specified to ensure that the wall, fence or gate are compliant. They cannot be less than 1,2 metres high measured from the ground level, and at no point should you be able to put a 100-millimetre diameter ball through any gap in the wall, fence or gate. The standards are fully set out in SANS 10400 D4 and it is the responsibility of the homeowner to comply with these requirements. It is a common misconception that a pool net equates to compliance with safety regulations, but this is sadly NOT the case. Pool covers and warning devices do not exempt the pool owner from complying with the legal obligations relating to enclosing the pool securely. If a homeowner chooses to have pool covers, there is an additional SANS 10134 document that specifies the regulations needed to make the device compliant.

The time that it has taken you to read this article is long enough for a child, grandchild or visiting child to drown in a pool. I have friends who have experienced such a tragedy and it is one that will remain with you for the rest of your life, never mind the legal ramifications.

Prawn Marie Rose Avocado Wrap
Have you ever had a prawn cocktail in a wrap? This fresh, zesty prawn wrap is an easy lunch dish that you can make in no time at all! It’s also satisfying and delicious!
Makes 1 wrap
Prep and cook time: 10 to 15 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 6 medium prawns, peeled and poached
• 50ml Marie Rose sauce
• Handful lettuce
• 1 carrot, julienned
• ½ avocado, sliced
• ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled
• Handful of cooked French fries, to serve
• 1 tortilla wrap
• Butter, for toasting
Marie Rose Sauce
• 250ml mayonnaise
• 1 tsp Tabasco sauce
• ¼ cup tomato sauce
• Salt, to taste
• Ground black pepper
METHOD
Marie Rose Sauce
1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.
Assemble the Wraps
1. Poach the prawns in salted boiling water.
2. Strain water and roughly chop the prawns.
3. Mix the prawns with Marie Rose sauce.
4. Assemble the wrap by laying down lettuce first.
5. Top this with the prawns, Marie Rose sauce, sliced avocado and feta cheese.
6. Roll the wrap up and toast lightly with a little butter.
Serve with French fries.
White Chocolate Chunk Brownies
This recipe is pure decadence – enough said. However, life is all about balance – like balancing a salad in one hand and a brownie in the other. We’re only joking! Makes 12
Prep and cook time: 40 minutes
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a 20-centimetre square greased baking tin.
2. Beat the eggs and sugar in a bowl until very light and fluffy.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 eggs
• 300g sugar
• 250g butter, melted
• 200g dark chocolate, melted
• 100g flour, sifted
• 25g cocoa powder
• 200g white chocolate, broken into small pieces
3. Slowly add the melted butter and melted dark chocolate.
4. Fold in the sifted flour and cocoa powder.
5. Stir in the white chocolate pieces.
6. Pour the batter into the greased baking tin and bake for 30 minutes.
7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
8. Slice and serve when ready.
Toss the white chocolate in a little bit of flour before adding it to your mix. This will stop it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
