Estate Manager The Season Ahead at Dunkirk
Dear Residents, Welcome back to another lovely issue of your Estate E-Mag, beautifully put together by Pam and filled with news. After an exceptionally hot, dry summer, it was ironically the wettest winter we have had in years, so the anticipated work on the dam was delayed by several months. PHOTO CHRIS ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY
Just as it dried enough to get a large machine in, another cold front with rain came in. But we finally got underway. Plants were lifted and placed temporarily in Forest Dam for the rehabilitation, the lining and gabion materials arrived, and there was much excitement at the dam with our junior spectators watching the heavy machinery at work every day.

ESTATE UPDATE
Our contractors, Hydro-Irrigation, did an exceptional job, even getting an additional 45 labourers on site to get work finished before the next rains caught us. There is still work to be done on the inlet and then the re-planting will get underway in earnest. Please respect the signs and barricades and keep curious kids away from any construction and newly planted areas, we will let you know as soon as it is open again for fishing and recreation. Some casualties from the dry season this year were the verge plantings. Although
the Jaluka team did their best to keep everything watered, the heat took its toll, but following a good composting, we are starting to replant and beautify all the bare and barren areas again. If we could just ask for a little patience from residents, as it will take some time to get around to all the areas that need attention. Mondlikonke, did a fantastic job on the Forest Walkway, and with the addition of a small platform and bench (a wonderful suggestion from one of our residents), you can now sit awhile to enjoy the birds in our beautiful piece of Coastal Swamp Forest. 6 PHOTO CHRIS ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY

through December, with peak sightings generally occurring between August and October. Humpback whales are the stars of the show, often spotted breaching, tail-slapping and travelling just offshore. Keeping Dunkirk Estate Safe, Secure & Connected
A
t Dunkirk Estate, the safety and security of our residents remain a top priority. We are pleased to share important security upgrades and improvements recently implemented across the Estate.
Clearer perimeter, better visibility: We cleared vegetation along the perimeter to provide an unobstructed view for the cameras. This work also ensures that the solar panels receive sufficient sunlight, helping them charge the batteries effectively and support the security infrastructure. 19
SECURITY
Smart fence technology: We recently upgraded from the previous perimeter fence energiser system to a new digital JVA Smart Fence system. This modern technology allows our security officers to monitor fence voltages digitally, without the need for physical testing, and they can see at a glance a detailed layout of the fenceline, highlighting any faults as well as armed and disarmed areas. The upgrade will reduce reliance on foot patrols and allow our guards to focus more on visual monitoring via CCTV and the smart perimeter system. It also divides the perimeter fence into smaller, more easily controlled sections.
Ongoing maintenance and support: To ensure the system continues operating effectively, Impact Fencing will work alongside our daily maintenance man, Mafuleka. Their responsibilities will include servicing the cameras, fence components, and carrying out necessary software upgrades. Pedestrian gate times: A reminder that the pedestrian gate operates using facial recognition from 5:00 to 18:00, after which a lock-out function is in place for your safety. Security is a team effort, and together, we keep Dunkirk safe.

Your Dunkirk Story Meet the Cronje Family
F
or Lionel and Teagan Cronje, family, community, and an outdoor lifestyle are everything — making Dunkirk feel like the perfect place to call home. Married for 10 years and parents to two young children, the Cronjes have lived in various parts of South Africa and spent five wonderful years in Japan, where Lionel played professional rugby for Toyota Verblitz. Today, Lionel is part of the Currie Cup
coaching staff at the Sharks, while Teagan works in real estate at Home Ground Real Estate. After living in Zululami, the move to Dunkirk felt like a natural progression for the family. Teagan had always admired the Estate’s lush vegetation and beautiful trees, but it was finding their current home that sealed the deal. “I took my husband to view it for the first time, and we both just knew this home was meant for us!”

Their favourite things about their new home? Space, views and privacy. And they’ve already fallen in love with the welcoming Dunkirk community. “We’ve been blown away by how friendly and welcoming everyone has been.” Life at Dunkirk is quickly settling into a happy rhythm — afternoon forest walks, weekends at the Beach Club and mid-week date nights at Ray’s Kitchen. The family is also looking forward to making full use of the Estate’s training pool, gym and sauna.
For Teagan, home is all about creating a space where her family can relax, connect and thrive. T
he Crowned Eagle is one of Africa’s most powerful and impressive birds of prey. Scientifically known as Stephanoaetus coronatus, this magnificent raptor is found across the eastern parts of South Africa, favouring forests, woodlands, riverine forests and mountainous areas. Here on the North Coast, the Crowned Eagle is a top predator and plays an important role in maintaining the balance of our natural environment by helping to
regulate populations of small and medium-sized mammals. Crowned Eagles have a varied diet, although mammals make up the majority of their prey. They hunt monkeys, tree and rock hyraxes, small antelope and other mediumsized mammals, and may also take birds, reptiles and smaller animals. With exceptionally powerful talons, they are capable of capturing prey that can be surprisingly large compared to their own size. These skilled hunters often perch high in the forest canopy, patiently

watching for movement below before silently swooping down to capture their prey. Their stealth and powerful hunting ability make them formidable predators.
provides food. After hatching, the chick remains dependent on its parents for around 110 days before fledging and beginning to develop its own hunting skills.
Breeding is a slow and carefully managed process. Crowned Eagles are generally monogamous, with pairs forming long-term bonds. Their impressive nests are built high in tall trees using sticks and vegetation, and the same nest may be repaired and reused over several breeding seasons.
Crowned Eagles face ongoing threats from habitat destruction, deforestation and human disturbance. Protecting our forests and preserving suitable natural habitats are therefore essential to their conservation.
The female usually lays one or two eggs, although typically only one chick survives. The female takes on most of the incubation, while the male
