THE ACCOUNTANT ADVANTAGE

The value of relationships

As tax time nears, your Accountant will already have a solid understanding of your financial situation and can provide you with tailored tax advice to make the most of your money. As your circumstances change, your Accountant can offer advice and suggestions to help you maximise your finances and ensure you get back what you are entitled to.

Save time

Your Accountant can process your tax return within the hour – and if you don’t have time to chat with an Accountant, you can arrange your Return to be completed via email while you relax and do something you enjoy.

Reduce stress

When you lodge your Return yourself, the responsibility falls squarely on your shoulders. As Accountants work in this area daily they have a comprehensive understanding of the tax legislation. Choosing to lodge through an Accountant allows you to rest easy knowing your Return has been accurately prepared.

Extended deadlines

If you lodge your tax return yourself, the usual deadline is October 31st. If your Accountant lodges your tax return, the lodgement due date is extended to May the following year.

Less complex

One thing’s for sure, all tax returns are unique. If you’ve got several jobs, earn additional income through the share market, run a business, own rental property or juggle an investment portfolio, using an Accountant can remove the complexity and help ensure you maximise your entitlements.

Extra savings

Your Accountant may also be able to let you in on some extra tips to reduce your taxable income before the end of the financial year, such as Salary Packaging, making extra contributions to your partner’s superannuation, see your eligibility for government superannuation co-contributions.

TAX TIME FAQs

To take the guess work our of lodging your Tax Return we have put together a series of frequently asked questions to help you navigate your requirements and opportunities for the maximum return this financial year.

Do I have to lodge a Tax Return?

Yes, even if you haven’t earned any income you will need to lodge a NIL return or a ‘Return Not Necessary’ with the ATO.

If someone passes away, the Executor of the Estate will need to lodge a ‘final return’.

No lodgement is required if you have previously lodged a ‘final return’ and aren’t receiving any form of income.

Can you prepare multiple years returns at the same time?

Yes, be sure to keep all receipts safe and easy to find. Penalty interest may be applicable if you have outstanding debts or lodgements, or you may be eligible for a tax refund.

Can I claim any deductions if I have no receipts?

Yes, if you don’t have any proof of payment you can claim up to $300 worth of deductions.

If you don’t have receipts, you will need to have access to the following should the ATO ever audit you.

• Documentation that includes the name of the supplier, amount of the expense, what the goods or services are, date the expense was incurred for example:

 Bank & credit card statements

 BPAY reference numbers

 Email receipts

 PAYG payment summary

 Paper or electronic copies of original documents Scan code to view

THE CLAIM GAME

Things you CAN and CAN’T claim at tax time

You can claim the cost of using a car you own when you drive:

 between separate jobs on the same day for example, from your first job as a personal care assistant to your second job as a disability support worker

 to and from an alternate workplace for the same employer on the same day – for example, directly between clients' homes.

You can claim the work-related portion of other expenses that relate to your employment, including:

 phone and internet costs, with records showing your work-related usage

 expenses you incur working from home that are not incidental (for example, you can't claim the cost of checking your roster or payslip)

 logbooks, diaries and pens that you use for work

 union and professional association fees

 seminars, conferences and courses that directly relate to your work.

You can’t claim private expenses, such as:

 fitness expenses, for example gym fees

 parking at your normal place of work or public transport, taxis or ride share expenses from home to work, even if you work split shifts or unusual hours

 flu and other vaccinations, even if you’re required to have them for work

 pay tv, music subscriptions and streaming services.

You can’t claim the cost of normal trips between home and work, even if you live a long way from your usual workplace or have to work outside normal business hours – for example, weekend or early morning shifts.

*You can’t claim any of the above if the expense was reimbursed by your employer or paid for as part of a Salary Packaging
