CHAPTER 1: THE LAST NIGHT
Arthur sat on a fancy chair near the grand window, his thoughts drifting as the cold winter night wrapped around him. In his 80s, Arthur was a wealthy man, pondering over how well his life turned to be. The cold winter night surrounded him, and the wind whispered through the old walls. The room was dimly lit by the flickering fireplace, casting shadows on the walls with portraits of his ancestors.
His silver hair shone in the firelight, and his eyes, though aged, still showed sharp intelligence. Carefully, he picked up an old fountain pen and a sheet of fine paper. The pen scratched softly against the paper as he wrote, each word thoughtful and precise, coming from his heart and mind. Now it was time for old leaves to make way for new ones.
The next morning, Emily, Arthur’s wife, was screaming and crying. Their two sons, David and Michael, rushed down the stairs into Arthur's room. Michael, a doctor, checked his father’s pulse and found it lifeless. Shocked, he noticed two teeth marks on Arthur’s right leg.
Michael, gathering his courage, faced his mother, "Father is no more. He died from a snakebite."
David hugged their mother, trying to console her. The next day, as Emily gained control, the brothers brought up the conversation about the property. Emily said Arthur had written a will, safely kept in his room. They searched frantically but found nothing, sparking a wildfire of accusations between the brothers. Emily, helpless and stressed, called Arthur’s childhood friend and the village detective, Peter.
Peter listened to David and Michael’s account, took a photo of Arthur’s leg, and stayed in a nearby town overnight.
On returning, Arthur’s family looked scared and anxious the next day. Emily, with a trembling voice, said, "We saw a ghost, a black shadow moving in the corridor, and it chased us out."
Michael added, "I was asleep when they called me. I woke up and saw it too."
Peter, thinking deeply, asked Michael to take him to their house. As soon as they arrived, Michael called the police.
Peter smiled and informed the police, "I know who the real culprit is. Take David and check Arthur’s room. Michael, come with me."
