What is a Battery Management System (BMS)_

Page 1

A Battery Management System (BMS) is a critical electronic system integrated into rechargeable battery packs—particularly lithium-ion batteries—to ensure their optimal performance, safety, and longevity. Acting as the “brain” of the battery, it continuously monitors and manages key parameters such as voltage, current, temperature, and State of Charge (SoC), thereby preventing hazardous conditions and maximizing battery life. This article delves into the Battery Management System (BMS), exploring its core functions, necessity, and more.

What is a Battery Management System (BMS)?

A Battery Management System (BMS) is an electronic system paired with rechargeable battery packs (especially multi-cell packs) that acts both as a smart monitor to continuously track battery status and as an active protection device. It manages critical parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature in real time, preventing common damages like overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, high temperature, or external short circuits. When unsafe operating conditions are detected, it automatically cuts off the circuit to ensure battery safety, optimize performance, and support communication with external devices. All EYT Battery products come with a built-in BMS to manage and protect the battery from these issues.

● Battery Monitoring: Tracks the voltage, temperature, and current of individual cells. ● Balancing: Ensures all cells charge and discharge evenly. ● Protection Features: Prevents overcharging, overdischarging, and overheating. ● State of Charge (SOC) Estimation: Calculates the remaining capacity.
