Frenz Garden Center
Theinsville’s Frenz Garden Center’s owners, Jim and Emily Gehrke talk about their business. How long have you been in business? My parents started Frenz Garden Center in 1958 at a roadside stand in Mequon where they sold bedding plants in spring, fresh fruits and vegetables in summer, apples from their orchard in fall, and Christmas trees during the winter holidays. My husband Jim and I took over the business in May of 1990. We live on the family farm where our grandchildren are the 7th generation to reside. How did you get started? I have always been in the horticulture business. From little on I was helping in the apple orchard or watering plants at the garden center. It’s kind of in my blood and I have always had an interest in it. During my dating years with Jim, if there was work to do before we went out, Jim would pitch in and help. That’s how he got started in the business and always offered free help for his future in-laws. What changes have you seen over the years open? Different varieties of plants have multiplied over and over. It’s not just geraniums, petunias, delphiniums and hostas anymore, there are now so many more options that it’s sometimes hard to choose. Knowledge on container gardening, raised vegetable beds and hanging baskets have come a long way. Years ago, flowers were just planted in garden beds, now you can plant in any container available! Organic gardening, native and pollinator plants, love for succulents and house plants all have had an increase in interest. What do you most Love about your Industry? We love the relationships that we have formed with customers, employees and our vendors. We love that every day at “work” is different and there is never a dull moment. We love the beauty of all the changing seasons, especially the bright, beautiful new growth in spring.

Frenz Garden Center What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? One common myth about gardening is that growing perennials is an easier option for gardening than planting annuals every year. In fact, perennials take more attention and care from spring to winter than annuals. Another myth is that once a plant is planted, all it needs is water. Of course, plants need water, but they also need fertilizer to flourish - just like humans need food. What message would you most like to share with people? Every growing season is different–one year might be good for tomatoes and the next year we might have better weather for potatoes. If you have trouble with a crop, don’t give up and try again. In reality, plants are living things and all living things will eventually die, don’t be too upset when it happens. There may be a reason it perished, a reason you might not know, but don’t get to upset and please try again. Gardening can sometimes be an experiment. What would you like people to know about your business? Our business is very personal to us. We enjoy helping our customers have a successful gardening experience. We like to share our knowledge and supply our customers with superior plants. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? The variety of plants, gardening supplies, and related gardening gifts. Customers seem to always find what they’re looking for. They also are very thankful for the help they receive for gardening related problems. What are you most proud of? Our customer service. We like to help our customers with all aspects of their purchases, as well supplying first rate products and plant materials. How many employees/Family work with you? Besides Jim and I, we have one full time employee and up to 12 part-time employees during the peak growing season. Our oldest son grows the annuals and all other family members help one way or another by watering, delivering, growing fall produce, sales or other duties when needed. What are you most grateful for? We are most grateful for our family who understands the business and plans birthday parties around our work schedule so we can attend! We are grateful to God for beautiful weather, our health, great employees, loyal and new customers, and the changing seasons. Who/what can you credit your success? Our parents who instilled good work ethics and perseverance of a dream. Visit historic downtown Ripon on Friday, April 22nd for our Spring WineWalk. During the event, which takes place from 5:30 to 8:30pm, businesses will become “tasting rooms” where attendees may sample up to 16 different wines throughout the evening. Each participant will receive a souvenir wine walk glass, and a wristband which is good for up to 16 wine tastes through the evening. Tickets will be available through Eventbrite beginning February 1st and are $30 each per participant. The event will feature a selection of wines from Chile, Argentina, Italy, Spain, South Africa and Australia, as well as California, Florida and Wisconsin, including local favorite Vines & Rushes Winery. Proceeds will benefit the Dickens of a Christmas festival and beautification projects throughout downtown Ripon, Wisconsin. Tickets may be redeemed for glasses and wristbands beginning at 1:00 pm at Chamber/Main Street office (114 Scott Street) on the day of the event. Lanyards have 16 pour tabs, good for one 1 oz. wine sample each. No alcohol will be served before 5:30 pm. Wine glasses must be empty before leaving each stop. The FREE Merrimac Ferry is located on Hwy 113 across the Wisconsin River/Lake Wisconsin area, Between Okee and Merrimac. It is operated 24hrs a day, 7 days a week from April through November. Once you are on the Ferry, feel free to get out of your car and take in the gorgeous scenery of the Wisconsin River. The ride takes about 7 minutes to cross the Wisconsin River to the other shoreline. Many people make a special trip to the area just to ride this Free ferry. Also, while you wait for the Ferry to arrive, you can enjoy a delicious treat at the local ice cream & snack shop or even enjoy your own picnic lunch in the park area right by the Car Ferry loading lines.

URBAN Farm Girl West Bend’s Urban Farm Girl and Urban Loft’s owner, Sheila Kruepke talks about her business.
How long have you been in business? 4 years How did you get started? Gosh, that’s a long story but I will shorten it up a bit. My mom was my inspiration, it was right after she passed. I needed something that kept my mind busy. Painting furniture seemed like it would be therapeutic. So needless to say I painted many many many pieces of furniture. It was my time to be alone and think about how our family was going to manage without her. There were days where I would paint all day. I started selling pieces on Facebook. It then grew to painting custom pieces. A couple booth rentals and slowly to my own brick and mortar downtown West Bend. And as I felt the need for more space, I opened a second brick and mortar in downtown West Bend called urbanLoft, which opened March 18. What changes have you seen over the years open? The change I have noticed is people are supporting small local businesses. What do you most Love about your Industry?

Urban Farm Girl Oh my, I love it all! The buying, creating a beautiful space for it and most importantly helping customers with their designing. We have a great relationship and enjoy working together to make downtown West Bend a destination for everyone to shop. What message would you most like to share with people? I would like to share that Urban Farm Girl is my passion and that when I see customers walk out with something they love it makes me just as happy. What would you like people to know about your business? I want people to know that I would love to help them with their home decor design ideas. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? I hear quite often the that my store is full of unique and different items. What are you most proud of? I am most proud of being a part of downtown West Bend. Oh and that I am in two beautiful, charming, historical buildings. How many employees/Family work with you? Sometime I feel like I am 2 employees, just kidding. Ok, seriously, I have one employee and a husband that is behind the scenes and helps me more than I ever could have imagined, I could never do this without him. Sisters and aunts are always a huge help when my barn is open and I am thankful for them too! What are you most grateful for? I am most grateful for all the amazing customers I have. This wonderful solid cast iron Boston Terrier is at Pardeeville Antique Mall in Pardeeville, WI. Made around the 1920s by the Hubley Foundry, well known for their superb castings and paint jobs. This little guy weighs a hefty 3 1/2 pounds. He’s almost 6” long and 4 1/"" tall. Just one of the many cast iron pieces Hubley created back in the day. A Tasty Tart Strawberry Cream Cheese Tart Servings: 8 Crust: 1 1/4 cups flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small cubes 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract uncooked rice Filling: 8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons extra-fine sugar 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup strawberry fruit spread 3 teaspoons lemon juice (optional) 1 pound strawberries, halved whipped cream (optional) Heat oven to 375 F. To make crust: In food processor, add flour, sugar and salt; pulse until combined. Add butter, egg and vanilla extract; pulse until combined and crumbly. Lightly flour surface then form dough into ball. Slightly flatten to form thick disc. Wrap dough in plastic wrap; refrigerate 1 hour.Flour surface then roll dough to 11-inch circle. Place dough in 9-inch tart pan with removeable bottom. With rolling pin, roll over top to trim excess dough around edges. Cover dough with plastic wrap and freeze until firm, about 30 minutes. Press aluminum foil against crust, covering edges to prevent burning. Fill and distribute uncooked rice evenly. Bake 20 minutes. Cool completely. To make filling: In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, sour cream, sugar, lemon zest and vanilla extract until blended and smooth. Spread cheese mixture evenly over crust. Refrigerate 1 hour. In small bowl, microwave fruit spread and lemon juice, if desired, stirring often. Arrange strawberry halves around tart. Drizzle heated fruit spread over strawberries. Top with whipped cream, if desired. ~

Milwaukee’s Third Point Of View’s owner, Marina Roesselet talks about her business. My business started 4 years ago. with booths in other antique malls. I decided that with the amount of inventory I was collecting that it was time to open my own shop. We started out with many local vendors and added another floor to the shop. When we were closed for Covid, I downsized to just one floor again. When we reopened and with only one floor there was not enough space for all the venors. Just a handful of vendors are still with me… including some local artists. I love the hunt and finding unique items to bring into the shop…you never know what you will come across. My husband and I do a lot of traveling and find things from across the country. Besides vintage and antique items I also carry a large variety of stones and crystals, jewelry, clothing and accessories both vintage and newer. Plus, books, children’s items, vintage and new items for your kitchen and home. We feature a room called the ‘man cave’ with beer related items and more! We also carry a large variety of incense, tarot and zodiac items. My customers really like the wide variety of items I carry and always come in to find the perfect gift. In bowl, whisk egg. Add honey, vanilla, lemon zest and salt; whisk. Stir in coconut until completely coated with egg mixture. Using 1 1/2-inch ice cream scoop, make 15 balls, transferring each to parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake macaroons 10-12 minutes, rotating halfway through, until coconut starts to brown on edges. Transfer sheet to wire rack and let cool. Before serving, drizzle with melted chocolate or dip bottom sides of macaroons in melted chocolate to cover bases. Refrigerate 15 minutes to set.~

These Bunny Rolls with Spinach Dip are as eye-catching as they are delicious. Not only will the kids love its shape, but the layers of taste will wow your springtime crowd. This dish is made for a crowd, served warm and full of cheesy goodness. You can watch as your family dips into the spinach and one-by-one, before you know it, the rolls will have disappeared and the dip will be devoured. Find more recipes at Culinary.net. Bunny Rolls with Spinach Dip Serves: 24 16 ounces frozen spinach, thawed 8 ounces cream cheese 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 2 crescent roll tubes (8 ounces each) Heat oven to 375 F. In skillet, over medium heat, cook spinach, cream cheese and garlic 3-4 minutes until cream cheese is melted. Stir in mayonnaise, salt, onion powder, chili powder, pepper and Italian seasoning. Stir in Parmesan cheese and 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese. Cook until cheese is melted. Keep skillet on burner over low heat. Remove dough from tubes. Leaving dough intact, roll and stretch into 18inch ropes. Cut each rope into 12 pieces for 24 total. On baking sheet with parchment paper, form bunny head by placing one piece of dough in middle then surrounding it with six more pieces. Use 13 pieces to form round body. Use remaining pieces to form ears on top of head. Scoop hot spinach dip into center. Spoon small portions on each ear. Sprinkle ears and belly with remaining mozzarella cheese.Bake 18 minutes, or until crescent dough is golden brown and thoroughly cooked. ~
