EDITOR’S LETTER
Have you ever worked on a project where it felt like anything and everything that could go wrong… did? That was this month’s issue.
We faced software glitches, power outages, emergency room visits, and more phone calls and text messages than we could count. Two days before deadline, our design software updated— and promptly locked up every time Tracee uploaded an image. We found a temporary workaround and kept plugging along… only to have the power go out for over an hour. There may or may not have ended up being wine and chocolate involved as we worked late into the evening.
We cleared our calendars for the final day before deadline, determined to finish strong. The morning was moving slowly—but it was moving. Then a phone call came that sent us to the emergency room with a family member. After that, it was back to work late into the night trying to meet our deadline.
Despite all of our efforts, we still didn’t get it to the printer on time.
And that’s where we need to say a very heartfelt thank you. Our printer truly jumped through hoops to make sure the magazines were completed on schedule, even though they received the files later than usual. THANK YOU, Digital Graphics! We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and your patience.
If you’re reading this, you know it all came together in the end.
Thank you for spending some time with our magazine. We truly appreciate it and hope you have a wonderful month. We’ll chat again next month—see you around town.

CAPIZZI’S COMMENTARY
A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
WRITER: Mayor Keith Capizzi
Recently, I took a closer look at the phrase on our city seal — “Jewel of the Space Coast” — and asked myself what it actually says about Cocoa Beach. It’s a pleasant expression, but does it clearly define who we are?
When I searched the phrase online, nothing connected directly to Cocoa Beach. Results referenced places like Titusville and Merritt Island, and the description could reasonably apply to many communities along the Space Coast. It’s positive, but it’s a broad marketing slogan.
Out of curiosity, I then searched what Cocoa Beach is best known for. The first result was “East Coast Surfing Capital.” That distinction stood out.
Unlike a generalized slogan, that title reflects a verifiable and longstanding identity. Cocoa Beach has been central to East Coast surfing since the 1950s, shaping the growth of the sport nationally. The city is home to iconic surf institutions, nationally recognized competitions, and athletes who brought international attention to our shoreline and helped define modern surf culture. This legacy is documented, measurable, and widely acknowledged.
and not exclusive to our city; we have never launched a rocket from Cocoa Beach. I believe that designation would be more fitting for Cape Canaveral.
A city’s official tagline should clearly distinguish it and reflect an authentic, enduring identity. “East Coast Surfing Capital” does exactly that.
That said, I brought it up for discussion at a council meeting, and not one Commissioner shares my view. The Commission chose to retain “Jewel of the Space Coast,” and I respect that decision — even if I see it differently.
As always, I look forward to seeing you around town. Please feel free to say hi and share your thoughts.
Just as importantly, it is unique. While many Space Coast communities have their own strengths, none share Cocoa Beach’s historic concentration of surf culture, industry, and influence. “Jewel of the Space Coast,” though complimentary, is subjective
Your friend and Mayor, Keith Capizzi
Hello Cocoa Beach! We’re lucky to live in such a special place, and one of our favorite things to do is bring the community together for something that’s fun, meaningful, and helps our local kids at the same time. Our next chance to do just that is coming up April 10th in front of Cocoa Beach City Hall, and we hope you’ll join us.
We’re hosting a Car Show & Family Event featuring some beautiful classic and muscle cars from around the area. If you’ve got a car you’re proud of, come show it off — we’d love to see it. Spaces are limited, and the entry fee is $20 per vehicle.
Alongside the car show, we’ll also be holding a Children’s Clothing Drive. We’re collecting clean, gently used clothing for kids ages 6-12 (grades K-6). These items will be delivered to our elementary schools to help children who may need a change of clothes during the school day. It may seem like a small thing, but it can make a big difference for a child.
Kiwanis is all about serving kids. Our work supports health and nutrition, education and literacy, and youth leadership. Throughout the year, we raise funds right here in Cocoa Beach to give back to local families — from college scholarships to holiday gift cards at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also organize the Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade and help with the Turkey Trot, keeping our community traditions alive and well.
This event is a simple way to enjoy a great day — meet your neighbors, see some incredible cars, and help local children all at once. We’d love to see you there.
If you’re interested in getting involved, the Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at Azteca II Restaurant, 1600 N Atlantic Ave. (A1A), inside the Resort on Cocoa Beach. New faces are always welcome.
Hope to see you April 10th.

Navigating life along the Space Coast as wife, mother, and friend
While homeschooling my children, I have learned some fun and interesting facts along the way—facts that I don’t recall being presented in school, but maybe I was too busy passing a note to my friend and missed it. This month, I wanted to pass along one of these nuggets. Journey with me to 753 BC, when Romulus is said to have founded Rome. Romulus studied lunar cycles and agricultural patterns, and from these he is credited with having created a 10-month calendar. March was the name given to the first month of this calendar, or in Latin, “Martius,” after the Roman god of war, Mars. He was the god chosen to reference because during the winter months, military campaigns were placed on hold, but the coming of spring brought with it a resurgence in military action. The landscape reawakened from its dormancy, along with animals that had been hibernating. We refer to this astronomical phenomenon as the spring equinox. For us living in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the beginning of spring, while the Southern Hemisphere is welcoming in autumn. This year, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, this celestial show falls on March 20th at 10:46 a.m. It can best be illustrated by imagining yourself standing on the equator and looking up to see the Sun directly pass overhead, moving from south to north as it crosses the celestial equator during the Vernal (Spring) Equinox.

So why did the calendar change its lead month and add two more months? We can thank Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, in 713 BC for adding January and February, pushing March to the third month of the year and making a 12-month calendar. Then, in 46 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar, maintaining its length of twelve months but changing the number of days in the year to be based upon a solar year, which focuses on the Earth’s orbit around the Sun (approximately 365.24 days), versus a lunar year, which is based upon the moon’s cycles (approximately 354–355 days). In 1582, the Julian calendar was revised by Pope Gregory XIII when a determination was made that the previous Roman emperor’s system had miscalculated the length of the solar year by 11 minutes, causing the calendar to fall out of sync with the seasons. The Gregorian calendar was adopted, and with it, the addition of a leap year. Every four years, one extra day would be added to the calendar to maintain the alignment of our year with the seasons. Taking a deeper dive, I learned that a solar year is also referred to as a tropical year and is actually 365.24219 days, or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds long.
Now, knowing that March was once the beginning of the new year, I am choosing to release myself from the feeling that I am behind in finding my groove going into the third month of 2026. March brings new beginnings. Happy New Year!

Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School Community,
As we enter the fourth nine weeks, it is hard to believe how quickly this school year has moved. This truly is the final stretch academically, and I could not be more proud of the growth we have seen across our campus. From classroom discussions to collaborative projects to measurable progress on our benchmarks, our students have put in the work. We are looking forward to the end-of-year assessments as an opportunity for our students to demonstrate that growth. Before we make that final push, I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved, relaxing spring break—time to recharge, refocus, and come back ready to finish strong!
Our winter athletic programs have given us so much to celebrate. Both our Boys and Girls Wrestling teams had historic seasons, beginning with strong performances at the Cape Coast Conference Tournament and continuing through Districts, Regionals, and State. Our Boys
Wrestling team finished 2nd in the State Duals for the first time in school history—an incredible accomplishment. Congratulations to Coach Kelly and the entire team for setting a new standard of excellence at the Beach!
Our Boys Soccer team also made history this year, advancing to the State Championship Tournament for the first time ever. During their remarkable postseason run, Jadyn Senger broke the school’s all-time scoring record in the Regional Final—a special moment for our program. Congratulations to Coach Taylor and the team for representing our school and community with class, grit, and determination.
Academically, we are also on the verge of an exciting milestone. We are nearing the final steps in adding the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme to our existing IB offerings. We have a tentative verification visit
scheduled later this month, which is one of the final steps toward officially launching the programme for the 2026–2027 school year. This will expand opportunities for our students and further ensure they are prepared for college, career, and life when they walk across the bridge at graduation.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, faculty, and staff. It is an honor to serve this community, and together we will finish this year the right way.
Go Beach!
Sincerely,
Tim Powers Principal

Great board meetings build clarity, momentum, and engagement. Running productive, respectful board meetings isn’t always easy, especially when emotions run high and tough issues are on the agenda. To help community leaders manage conflict and keep meetings on track, the Space Coast Communities Association (SCCA) invites you to its March educational seminar on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 9:00 to 11:30 AM in the Jamaica Room at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral
This month’s program features Certified Association Attorney Erik Whynot of the Whynot Law Firm presenting “Conflict Resolution for the Community Association Board.” This lecture explores the legal and practical frameworks for negotiating and resolving the wide range of disputes that commonly arise within community associations. Participants will gain insight into the roles and responsibilities of association boards when addressing conflicts involving homeowners, vendors, governing documents, and enforcement matters. Attendees will also earn 1 CEU credit for participating.
The program will also include a 30-minute presentation by Sam Hodge of Hodge Construction, highlighting the company’s hands-on approach to construction management and its comprehensive, start-to-finish project oversight services.
These monthly seminars reflect SCCA’s ongoing commitment to educate, advocate, and connect community association leaders throughout Florida’s Space Coast. The SCCA serves nearly 19,000 residential units across condominium, HOA, cooperative, and timeshare communities. By bringing trusted experts and relevant topics to the table, SCCA empowers boards and managers to better serve their communities.
Whether you’re a long-time board member or new to association leadership, this March seminar offers practical guidance you can put to work right away. Strong meetings lead to stronger communities. Join us on March 18 to sharpen your leadership skills and run more effective meetings.

You may be reading and thinking, I can stream a movie from the comfort of my own home. What is so special about watching live theatre? Andrew Villain, director for the upcoming production of Oliver!, would offer you this to consider: “Live theatre offers a shared experience that can’t be replicated on a screen. Performers and audiences exist in the same space, experiencing the story together in real time. That immediacy creates connection.”
Speaking as one who has sat in the seats at Surfside watching adult performances, along with the Surfside Youth Players productions, which my own daughter thoroughly enjoys being a part of, there is a connectedness that comes with being in the playhouse. Feeling a tap on my shoulder and turning to see a neighbor who then engages in conversation solidifies that this is a theatre that is of the community and for the community.
There is an abundance of talent which pours from every nook and cranny of the playhouse. The directors, actors, and behind-the-scenes volunteers working on costumes, sets, and props bring a high level of professionalism and heart. There is intentionality in every step from audition to performance to ensure those who are under the lights or in the seats know that they are part of a family. I also love that, while
Your Community Theatre
A Spotlight on the businesses Who Make Our Community Shine
In the 1960s, long before Downtown Cocoa Beach existed, a playhouse was built among neighborhoods, offering a space for the community to connect while enjoying the entertainment of live theatre. Today, Surfside Playhouse continues to be nestled among residential housing as a gem tucked off Brevard Avenue and 5th Street South, inviting residents and visitors alike to experiences which can be best appreciated live.
watching a performance, I may be surprised to see who is up on stage. Is that one of my neighbors? Someone I go to church with? My chiropractor? Surfside Playhouse is accurate when it refers to itself as a community theatre.
Steve Mogell, President of the Board of Governors for Surfside Playhouse, has a passion for people and the playhouse. His exuberant energy can be found on stage and off. He is quick to extend an invitation: “There is a place for YOU at Surfside. Whether you are looking to act, build a set, usher, work front of the house, in a technical role, or serve refreshments, this is your hometown community theater. It is the little theater that thinks it can!”
While serving as President, Steve is committed to Surfside being “seen,” facilitating the recent mural along the north side of the playhouse building. The community painted the artwork. So now, as you are driving south on Brevard Avenue, you don’t have to wonder, “What is that building?” The vibrant mural spells it out.
Did you know Surfside Playhouse can seat 266? Each year, the playhouse offers two musicals, four nonmusicals, a fractured play (where
a particular genre or fairy tale is retold while adding music, comedy, and relatability to the audience), an interactive murder mystery, readers’ theater, improv groups, Surfside Youth Players with their own junior productions, hosts special events bringing in nationally known entertainers and performances, and is the designated place for Surf Movies, along with the Touchstone Independent Film Festival.

On March 21, 2026, Brevard County will celebrate the very first Space Coast Day, kicking off what is sure to become a meaningful annual tradition. The date—3/21—perfectly mirrors the familiar countdown heard before every rocket launch: three, two, one. Along Florida’s Space Coast, those numbers are more than just a countdown—they represent who we are, where we’ve been, and the spirit that continues to drive this community forward.
Earlier this year, the Brevard County Commission officially approved March 21 as Space Coast Day, recognizing the region’s deep roots in space exploration and its ongoing role in shaping the future of discovery. The idea, brought forward by local resident Todd Anderson and supported by NASA Director Janet E. Petrow, celebrates both the historic achievements of the Space Coast and the innovation that continues to define it today.
The meaning behind March 21 runs deeper than the countdown alone. The numbers are also reflected in the Space Coast’s distinctive 321 area code—an identity proudly
embraced by residents. Space advocate Robert “Ozzie” Osband helped bring the nowfamous code to the region in 1999, forever tying everyday life here to the excitement and anticipation of launch day. Interestingly, the concept of a countdown itself dates back nearly a century to the 1929 film Frau im Mond (“Woman in the Moon”), where a dramatic backward count built suspense before liftoff—an idea that later became standard in real-world rocketry.
As this first Space Coast Day approaches, the community is preparing to celebrate in a big way. The day is meant to highlight the region’s rich history, vibrant culture, and shared pride in being part of something truly unique. Because the holiday was only officially approved this January, many of this year’s events were still taking shape at the time of printing. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on local organizations and community social media pages for the latest updates and announcements.
Throughout the day, local attractions and museums—
including the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex—are expected to feature special exhibits and activities centered around space exploration. From hands-on experiences and educational displays to opportunities to hear from those connected to the world of spaceflight, the day is designed to inspire curiosity and celebrate discovery.
The celebration will also shine a spotlight on the community itself. Local businesses and restaurants are expected to join in with space-themed specials and promotions, giving everyone another fun way to take part. As the very first Space Coast Day, this celebration is expected to grow and blossom each year as more people join in and the tradition takes hold.
The first Space Coast Day is about more than rockets and launches—it’s about community, imagination, and the shared pride of calling the Space Coast home. Around here, “3-2-1” isn’t just a countdown… it’s part of who we are.

Greetings Beachside Residents:
If you are looking for an engaging mystery or historical fiction, check out one or both of these reads.
We Are All Guilty Here by Karin Slaughter. This murder mystery will not disappoint. In a small rural community in Georgia, two teenage girls go missing during a July 4th fireworks show. When their bodies turn up hours later in a lake on a well-known family’s land, the heads of many small towns are turning to find out who the killer is. With rapid twists and turns, the reader has no moment to reflect on who may or may not be a suspect. After a suspect is apprehended and serves multiple years in prison, there are more questions about whether he is guilty. Then, another child is abducted. Is this all happening again? Did the police get the right person the first time? You will have to read the book to find out, and you won’t be disappointed with the intrigue and who is going down in this small town.

March is prime strawberry season in Florida. While the Space Coast isn’t at the heart of the strawberry fields like Plant City, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy fresh berries through local markets, nearby farms, creative recipes, and seasonal events.
STRAWBERRY FESTIVALS
• Space Coast Strawberry Festival (Viera) March 7-8 – Two-day family celebration with strawberry treats, local vendors, and activities.
• Florida Strawberry Festival (Plant City) Through March 8th – Eleven-day state festival featuring strawberries in every form, plus concerts, rides, and entertainment.
CREATIVE STRAWBERRY RECIPES AND TREATS
Breakfast & Brunch
• Strawberry Banana Pancakes – Fold diced strawberries into pancake batter, top with sliced bananas and drizzle with local honey.
• Strawberry Yogurt Parfaits – Layer Greek yogurt, granola, and fresh strawberries in a glass. Add a sprinkle of coconut flakes for a tropical twist.
• Strawberry Smoothie Bowls – Blend strawberries with frozen bananas and a splash of orange juice. Top with granola, nuts, and extra berries.
• Strawberry Cream Cheese Toast – Spread cream cheese on toasted bread, top with sliced strawberries, and drizzle with balsamic glaze.
• Grilled Strawberry & Brie Sandwich – Add a drizzle of honey or balsamic glaze. Grill on crusty bread for a warm, melty combination of sweet and savory.
Snacks & Light Treats
• Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries – Classic, customizable with white chocolate, dark chocolate, or crushed nuts. Perfect for a beach treat.
• Strawberry Fruit Leather – Puree strawberries with a touch of honey and bake at low heat for a chewy, healthy snack.
• Strawberry Salsa – Dice strawberries with red onion, cilantro, and lime juice; serve with tortilla chips or on grilled fish.
• Strawberry Bruschetta – Toast baguette slices, top with ricotta or goat cheese, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey.
• Strawberry & Goat Cheese Salad – Mix fresh strawberries, arugula, candied pecans, and crumbled goat cheese. Dress with a light strawberry vinaigrette.

• Strawberry Shortcake Cups – Individual portions of sponge cake, whipped cream, and fresh berries.
• Strawberry Icebox Cake – Layer graham crackers, whipped cream, and sliced strawberries; chill overnight.
• Strawberry Crumble – Baked strawberries with a cinnamon-oat topping; serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
Drinks & Refreshments
• Strawberry Lemonade Spritz – Muddle strawberries into lemonade, top with sparkling water, and serve over ice.
• Strawberry Mojito – Muddle strawberries with mint and lime; add rum and soda water for a refreshing cocktail.
• Strawberry Iced Tea – Brew black or green tea, sweeten lightly, and add mashed strawberries.
• Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri – Blend strawberries with rum, lime, and ice for a perfect beachside treat.
• Strawberry Popsicles – Puree strawberries with coconut milk or yogurt, pour into molds, and freeze.
Flavor Boosts
• Orange zest – Brightens the flavor of berries in desserts or drinks.
• Local honey – Adds sweetness and supports pollinators.
• Fresh herbs – Basil or mint work beautifully in salads, drinks, and desserts.
Whether picking berries yourself or buying from a local stand, March strawberry season is a chance to support farmers, enjoy fresh produce, and try creative recipes that celebrate spring. Even if the season is short, it’s a delicious time to indulge and share with family, friends, and neighbors.
