The World’s Oldest Boat: Did you know that the oldest known boat in the world is the Pesse canoe, found in the Netherlands? Scientists estimate it was carved from a single Scots pine log between 8040 BCE and 7510 BCE—making it over 9,000 years old!

Why Port and Starboard?: Did you know that nautical terms “port” and “starboard” come from old sailing traditions? Early boats were steered with a rudder oar on the right side (called the “steer-board” side); because of this, ships always tied up to docks on the left side, which became known as the “port” side.

Fairfield County Transit Announces New App to Schedule LINK Direct Rides Fairfield County Transit today announced its partnership with a mobile app that will help people more easily schedule LINK Direct rides from their phones. The app, Ride Pingo, will be available for Fairfield County Transit users on October 12, 2026. Ride Pingo is free to download on both Apple and Google Play stores, will include scheduling, cancellation, estimated times of arrival and live bus location tracking features. Riders will choose where they want to be picked up and schedule their LINK Direct rides based on what buses are available. Riders will still share transit buses. Customers who do not wish to use the app will still be able to schedule LINK Direct rides by calling ahead of time, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. LINK Direct allows customers to schedule rides to medical appointments and other places they wish to go to within Fairfield County.

The Magic Number 12: Did you know that the famous “America’s Cup” 12-Metre class yachts aren’t actually 12 meters long? The “12” comes from a complex mathematical formula that balances length, sail area, and freeboard measurements to ensure fair racing, while the boats themselves are usually around 20 to 23 meters long.

“We are excited for this rollout. Ride Pingo will help our riders by maximizing efficiency and making sure people stay in the loop of communication about their rides,” said Fairfield County Transit Director Aaron Kennedy, “We are also excited about the impact this will have on our staff- freeing up more time to be able to provide quality customer service.” Ride Pingo has been used in three different continents, with communities reporting positive results worldwide. “Fairfield County is excited to use a globally renowned app to make the experience of scheduling more friendly to residents and visitors of Fairfield County,” said County Commissioner Steve Davis.
