From Local Talent to World Stage Triumphs Philippines on the Podium: How Carlos Yulo Inspires a Nation

This evening’s gathering is an affirmation of the significance tourism holds in the long continuum of our nation’s journey. From the galleons that once sailed between Manila and Acapulco to the modern air routes that now connect our islands to every major capital, the Philippines has long stood at the crossroads of peoples and cultures. The 32nd Skål Makati Tourism Awards, held in concert with the 44th Founding Anniversary of Skål International Makati brings together the stewards of this legacy whose craft turns geography into opportunity and hospitality into a strategic bridge of friendship among nations. For over four decades, this organization has cultivated a fellowship of leaders from hospitality, travel, and the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions industries, uniting them in a mission that strengthens both the industry they serve and the Republic they represent.
Tourism fuels economic dynamism while safeguarding the cultural and natural treasures that define our country’s character. Every event that is successfully hosted and every partnership forged through your collective efforts contributes not only to livelihoods and local enterprise, but also to the strategic projection of the Philippines as a secure, creative, and dependable partner in the global community. I urge the members and awardees of Skål International Makati to regard their work as a vital service to the nation, one that champions economic resilience, advances our foreign relations, and deepens the world’s trust in our nation.
May this occasion inspire a renewed commitment to advancing tourism as a decisive instrument of inclusive growth, cultural pride, and national dignity. Let every honor conferred tonight be both a recognition of excellence and a summons to greater responsibility. Let the stories of leadership and innovation celebrated here become a guide for the next generation of industry builders, reminding them that, in the global arena, the Philippines competes best when it draws from the depth of its heritage and ideals. In exalting the exemplary among you, we affirm the conviction that a tourism industry anchored in excellence, vision, and integrity reinforces our unity, prosperity, and enduring progress forwards a Bagong Pilipinas.
Congratulations, mabuhay kayong lahat!

Skål International today has approximately 12,064 members in 296 Clubs throughout 85 nations. Most activities occur at local level, moving up through National Committees, under the umbrella of Skål International, head quartered at the General Secretariat in Torremolinos, Spain.

The first Club was founded in 1932 in Paris by travel managers, following an educational tour of Scandinavia. The idea of international goodwill and friendship grew and, in 1934, the “Association Internationale des Skål Clubs” was formed with Florimond Volckaert as its first President, who is considered the “Father of Skål”.

Skål International is governed by an Executive Committee of six members, elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly, held during the World Congress, hosted by a different country each year. This allows members firsthand observation of the travel and tourism potential around the world

Skål is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.

Skål is an Association of Tourism Professionals which encourages and creates a network of professionals around the world. It promotes seminars and
conferences to strengthen the industry’s professionalism.
Through participation in local activities and events at all levels, members meet industry colleagues from around the world. Here, in an atmosphere of amicale, ideas, opportunities and industry matters, in general, may be shared on a personal and business level. Skål members should promote the organization, the formation of new Clubs and recruit qualified members.
Who is eligible for membership?

Young Skål is open to junior executives and tourism students entering the industry.
How do I join? A Skål International Membership Proposal Form is available at your nearest Club or from the General Secretariat. Membership can also be submitted online at www.skal.org. Those interested in membership may attend a Club meeting nearby or while traveling on business or leisure. Prospective members must be endorsed by two current members and the local
Executive and National Committees. Final approval must be obtained from Skål International.
Skål is non-political and encourages advancement and evolution through affiliation with other international industry organizations such as the World Tourism Organization. Skål does not discriminate on the basis of sex, age, race, religion, politics or social standing. Skål supports charitable causes.
What are the benefits of Membership?
Through contributions from Clubs around the world, the Florimond Volckaert Fund assists any Skål member in times of financial need or crisis.
The Skål International Membership Card entitles members to discounts at some participating outlets, provided by Skål Members.
The network of Skål Members worldwide is now accessible via the Skål website in www.skal.org. Information on members around the world is at your fingertips.

Skal respects the friendship and contribution of those who, while being members of Skal retire or decide to leave the travel and tourism industry, by adapting their contribution and participation to the necessary modification in their membership status as professionals, members endeavor to maintain the same high professional standards when contributing to Skal.
Voluntary contribution and participation by all members is appreciated in addition to the minimum required for continuing the Skal membership. Skal gives the members the opportunity to realize their potential by being part of a social body that is attractive and rewarding. Skal also supports the personal goals of the individual members in their involvement with the Association, whether these are for professional, social, or service reasons.

The basis of tourism is international relations. This way, Skal finds itself in the position to be the live expression of this element of union between different countries by transcending the limited national concept to another of supranational fellowship. Thus, it is in the international character of Skal wherein lies the strength and meaning of the association.
The Association may not allow any social, political, labourunion, religious, race, sex or age discrimination. To involve in the Skal Club life, question that may endanger the spirit of friendship or unity - e.g. political, union or religious questions should be carefully avoided.
Skal International is a nonprofit Association. Members have no personal rights on its wealth which is dedicated to the fulfillment of the Skal mission. Direct business and commercial relationships among members and supporters of Skal are encouraged.
Skalleagues and all levels of Skal are permanent and fully involved in the extension of the Skal Movement, as its positive effects to the benefit of tourism professionals, the tourism industry and represented societies, deserves to be shared world-wide among all the eligible tourism professionals.
The Statutes of the A.I.S.C., approved by its General Assembly, is the source of all the regulations for the different levels of Skal. The strategic and operational plans guide the programs and activities of Skal International. The primary responsibility of the Executive Committee and General Secretariat is to identify the resources for the programs and activities of the Association and to provide the leadership that will support the development and implementation of the aims and objectives of the Association.
Skal International assures the democratic procedures at all the representative levels of the organization. Clubs, National and Area Committees are autonomous in the development of their Skal life but are always subject to the regulations and guide lines given by Skal International.
Skal International is open to cooperate and support the non profit activities of the educational and Cultural-tourism learners, companies, associations or other organizations aiming in favour of the sustained development of the tourism industry or working for peace. Skal is also involved with the societies and local communities where it is professional.

Sustainable tourism is not just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. We must ensure that our tourism practices are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable. This includes reducing our carbon footprint, conserving natural resources, and respecting local cultures.
As tourism professionals, we have a responsibility to protect the environment and preserve the cultural heritage of the destinations we serve. We must work together to promote eco-tourism, reduce waste, and support local communities.

Child trafficking is a serious issue that requires our attention and action. We must ensure that our tourism practices do not contribute to the exploitation of children. Let’s work together to raise awareness, report suspicious activities, and support organizations that work to prevent child trafficking.

CAPT. STANLEY NG
SKAL INTERNATIONAL MAKATI - PRESIDENT

Here’s the latest on SKÅL International Makati’s initiatives, programs, and activities:
1. SKÅL International Makati to Bid for SKÅL Asian Congress 2027
SKÅL International Makati is planning to submit a bid to host the SKÅL Asian Congress 2027, a major regional event that brings together tourism leaders and SKÅL members from across the Asia-Pacific region. The chapter has communicated this intention to the Tourism Promotion Board (TPB) Philippines, which has expressed openness to support and cooperate in the hosting of the congress. As an initial step, TPB has requested information on the official bidding procedures and hosting requirements, which will guide the preparation of a competitive Philippine bid. Hosting the SKÅL Asian Congress would provide the Philippines with international exposure, networking opportunities, and a platform to showcase its tourism industry to regional leaders.
2. SKÅL International Makati Supports the Subic Bay International Tourism Showcase 2026
SKÅL International Makati is a supporting association of the forthcoming Subic Bay International Tourism Showcase 2026, scheduled from 19 to 21 March 2026. The Board of Directors, led by Chairman Jaime Bautista and President Captain Stanley Ng, will attend the opening
ceremonies and gala night, demonstrating the chapter’s strong support for the event. Members are encouraged to actively participate, network with industry leaders, and engage with tourism stakeholders. This initiative underscores SKÅL International Makati’s commitment to fostering collaboration, promoting Philippine tourism, and strengthening industry partnerships.
3. Revitalization of TEAM Philippines (Tourism Educators and Movers)
A major initiative is underway to revive TEAM Philippines, the organization founded by the late Chairman Bobby Joseph. The program seeks to engage and inspire young students and aspiring tourism professionals through mentorship, educational activities, and industry exposure. Participants are introduced to the SKÅL community as Skållegues — students or youth in training being groomed to become future SKÅL members, embodying the organization’s values of camaraderie, professionalism, and ethical leadership in tourism. While Skållegues focus on student engagement and early development, they complement the Young SKÅL program, which targets young professionals under 35 and provides broader networking and leadership opportunities. This initiative ensures the sustainability of SKÅL International Makati’s mission by cultivating the next generation of tourism leaders.
4. SKÅL International Makati Supports Children with Cancer Through Bahay Aruga
SKÅL International Makati continues its corporate social responsibility programs by supporting children with cancer and their families through the Bahay Aruga Foundation. Bahay Aruga is a non-profit halfway house that provides temporary shelter, meals, and emotional support for pediatric cancer patients who travel to Philippine General Hospital from provincial areas for treatment. By easing the financial and logistical burdens of long-term care, the foundation ensures that children and their families can focus on recovery. This partnership reflects SKÅL International Makati’s commitment to compassionate service and community engagement.
5. SKÅL International Makati to Enhance Membership Standards with Digital ID and Incentive Program
SKÅL International Makati will implement a digital membership ID system to strengthen engagement and raise organizational standards. The digital ID will serve as official verification of membership and also act as a marketing tool for members’ companies, enhancing credibility and visibility. Alongside the ID, an incentive program will reward active participation, leadership contributions, and involvement in organizational activities. Benefits may include recognition at events, priority access to SKÅL initiatives, and promotional opportunities for members’ businesses. Together, the digital ID and incentive program aim to encourage member involvement and elevate membership quality.

Moving beyond static museum formats, it presents traditions, crafts, festivals, and everyday life in ways that encourage participation and discovery. The attraction has drawn strong interest from domestic and international visitors seeking meaningful cultural encounters.
Lakbay Museo illustrates how cultural assets can be repositioned as dynamic tourism products. Under Tan’s leadership, it highlighted the commercial and educational viability of experiential culture, supporting destination branding, visitor engagement, and tourism-related economic activity while maintaining cultural integrity. Beyond this flagship initiative, Tan has developed themed attractions and leisure concepts emphasizing creative design. These projects complement hospitality, retail, and entertainment sectors, fostering longer stays and deeper visitor engagement.

ITakako Okada provides strategic stewardship at Okada Manila
In the competitive arena of Asia’s integrated resorts, leadership is often measured not by visibility but by consistency, governance, and long-term direction. For Ms. Takako Okada, her role at Okada Manila reflects a disciplined approach centered on institutional stability, strategic refinement, and the sustained positioning of the brand within the global hospitality market.
Ms. Okada formally joined the resort’s leadership in 2017 as a member of the Board of Directors, while also serving as Chief Relations Officer. In this capacity, she was involved in managing the corporate, institutional, and stakeholder relationships essential to the operation of a large-scale integrated resort. Her work emphasized alignment, continuity, and coordination—critical elements for
maintaining operational resilience in a capitalintensive environment.
In 2020, her responsibilities expanded with her appointment as Vice Chairperson of Okada Manila and Managing Director of the Premium Dining Division. Under her stewardship, Ginza Nagaoka, the resort’s high-end sushi restaurant, received the MICHELIN Selected distinction, affirming Okada Manila’s ability to compete within Asia’s increasingly sophisticated fine-dining landscape. She also oversaw the repositioning of Kappou Yoshi, introducing a kappou-style dining concept that balances seasonal precision with approachability, broadening its appeal to discerning yet diverse diners.

AAlejandro H. Tengco Leads PAGCOR Through Reform and Sustainable Growth
Alejandro H. Tengco is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the government-owned agency responsible for regulating the country’s gaming industry and generating revenues for national development. Appointed in August 2022, Tengco took the helm during a period of significant change, as the sector navigated digital expansion, structural adjustments, and rising expectations for regulatory oversight.
Tengco’s rise to PAGCOR’s leadership reflects a blend of private-sector experience and publicservice orientation. Prior to his appointment, he held senior executive roles in property development and corporate management, honing expertise in governance, operational discipline, and strategic planning. This foundation shaped his priorities at PAGCOR: enhancing transparency, reinforcing regulatory oversight, and defining the agency as a licensing and compliance authority rather than a commercial competitor.
Under Tengco’s leadership, PAGCOR has pursued reforms to modernize governance and strengthen accountability. A cornerstone initiative is the planned privatization of PAGCOR-operated Casino Filipino venues, allowing the agency to focus on regulatory functions. This separation aligns with international best practices where regulators are institutionally independent from commercial operations.
He has also guided the agency’s approach to electronic and online gaming, promoting strict compliance, responsible play, and enforcement against illegal operators. This approach balances industry growth with consumer protection, reinforcing public trust in the regulated sector while supporting sustainable revenue streams.
Tengco’s contributions have been recognized regionally and domestically. In 2024, he was named Executive of the Year at the Global Gaming Awards Asia Pacific for leadership excellence in the gaming sector. In March 2025, he received the inaugural Regulatory Landmark Award at the Asia Gaming Awards, honoring his efforts to elevate governance standards. Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist | Gymnastics
Paris Olympic Games, France
SPORTS TOURISM ICON AWARD

Sets A New Gold Standard For Philippine Sport

CCarlos Yulo, the Philippines’ most decorated gymnast, left the Paris Olympics with two gold medals and a message: he’s just getting started.
Yulo, 25, claimed titles in the floor exercise and vault – beating out former world and Olympic champions –and became the first Filipino athlete to win multiple Olympic golds in a single Games.
“I was very relaxed on the second day,” Yulo said after his vault win. “Getting a medal on the first day helped. When I did my vault routine, all I felt was joy. I couldn’t believe it was happening.”
His performances marked a high point not only for his career but for a country still building its international sports infrastructure. Yulo’s clean routines and mental poise came amid stiff competition from Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat, the reigning floor champion, and Britain’s Jake Jarman, a rising force in all-around events.
“If the first is unbelievable,” Yulo added, “the second is even more unbelievable.”
Yulo’s Paris campaign followed a strategic reset. After years of training in Tokyo under Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, Yulo returned to Manila in early 2023 to work with Aldrin Castañeda, a former national gymnast turned coach.
The switch came with risks. Training conditions in the Philippines remain inconsistent, and local support systems are thin. But Yulo said the move helped him recalibrate.

“He’s more grounded now,” said broadcaster Dyan Castillejo, who has followed Yulo’s career since he was a child. “He’s learned how to recover from losses and use them to sharpen his focus. What you saw in Paris was the result of that shift.”
Castillejo added that Yulo’s ability to deliver across multiple disciplines under pressure “puts him in rare company, not just as a Filipino athlete, but in global gymnastics.”
He’s clear-eyed about the demands.

For me, before and when my career ends, I want to have no regrets. “ “ -Carlos Yulo

“I’m not afraid of making mistakes or losing,” he said. “That’s part of being an athlete. No matter how prepared you are, anything can happen.”
He said his long-term goal isn’t defined by medal counts.
In a sport where timing, posture, and control separate champions from the rest, Yulo’s routines in Paris stood out not for their flash but for their execution. Judges consistently rewarded his high start values and minimal deductions. His vault final, in particular, earned near-universal praise for its clean landings and technical difficulty.
“He now competes like someone who knows he belongs at the top,” said Castillejo. “And that changes how others see him, too.”
“She was the first one who believed in me,” Yulo said. “She didn’t leave me through my ups and downs. She introduced me to sponsors, sent me to Japan, and treated me like her own son. If it weren’t for her, there would be no Carlos Yulo at the Olympics.”
Carrion-Norton was instrumental in securing early international exposure for Yulo, personally facilitating training opportunities abroad and coordinating sponsorships when national funding fell short.
Yulo credited her with creating “not just opportunities, but belief.”
Yulo is already training for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where he plans to defend his floor and vault titles while competing in the all-around – a rigorous event that tests versatility across all apparatus.

LLong regarded as the tourism jewel of Morocco, Marrakesh is evolving into more than just a tourist destination—it is fast becoming one of Africa’s most magnetic wellness and retreat capitals.
Nestled between the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains and the golden stretch of the Sahara, Marrakesh offers a powerful alchemy of culture, climate, and consciousness that draws seekers, creatives, and wellness enthusiasts from around the world. From the call to prayer echoing at dawn to the hypnotic sounds of Gnawa music in the medina by night, Marrakesh is an immersive sensory experience. Its ancient red walls hold centuries of spiritual heritage—Sufi traditions, herbal medicine, architecture designed with cosmic geometry.
Marrakesh breathes wellness. The rhythm of the medina, the fragrance of orange blossoms, the glow of lantern-lit riads—all of it contributes to an environment where the body slows down, and the spirit lifts. The traditional Moroccan hammam rituals alongside
modern treatments like sound healing, aromatherapy, and energy massage. Here, the hammam experience is elevated to an art form: guests are guided through a ceremonial journey of steam, exfoliation, and renewal. Black olive soap, infused with eucalyptus, is massaged into the skin to cleanse and open the pores, followed by a vigorous kessa glove scrub to remove toxins and dead skin. Rhassoul clay, sourced from the Atlas Mountains, is then applied to nourish and detoxify, grounding guests with ancient Moroccan healing practices.
The Source offers a tranquil refuge surrounded by an acre of lush gardens, this intimate retreat space is designed for soulful reconnection. More than a hotel, The Source is a curated experience—a place where music, nature, and mindfulness converge. Each suite is uniquely styled, some named after iconic musicians, others designed for meditation and creative flow. The interiors are a symphony of local craftsmanship and bohemian elegance, with sunken baths, high-thread-

count linens, and views of the surrounding olive groves. The resort often hosts sound meditations, cacao ceremonies, and conscious music events that attract a global community of artists, healers, and spiritual seekers. Hotel guests can begin their day with yoga or breathwork under the palms, followed by a nourishing organic brunch infused with local herbs and superfoods.
Beyond The Source, Marrakesh offers a constellation of wellness destinations. In the heart of the medina, Les Bains de Marrakech has become a pilgrimage site for spa lovers, with its ornate mosaics and customized hammam journeys. Nearby, Herboriste Elixir allows visitors to explore Moroccan herbal medicine, offering tinctures and oils used for generations to heal everything from headaches to heartbreaks. For those seeking peaceful ambiance, La Mamounia Spa, one of the city’s most iconic destinations, delivers royal-level wellness experiences within gardens that have existed since the 18th century. Jnane Tamsna, in the Palmeraie district,

combines organic cuisine, wellness retreats, and African design into one serene estate, often attracting creatives, yogis, and intellectuals from around the globe.
Wellness is not about escapism—it is about return. A return to stillness, to authenticity, to something ancient yet alive. It offers the space, stillness, and inspiration to restore body, mind, and spirit. In the rising constellation of African retreat hubs, Marrakesh shines brightly as a center of healing, art, and awakening. For retreat organizers, digital nomads, and transformation facilitators, the city presents a powerful base—rooted in African wisdom yet open to the world.
The Kingdom of Morocco is not simply a stop on the map—it is a portal into a more rooted, rhythmic, and regenerative way of being. And with visionary sanctuaries leading the way, the city is quickly solidifying its place as Africa’s sacred capital of wellness.

Where East Meets West in a Tapestry of Timeless Wonders
Istanbul doesn’t just welcome you; it embraces you. The city hums with a energy that’s been building for centuries, from the Byzantine mosaics of the Hagia Sophia to the Ottoman-era mansions lining the waterfront. Lose yourself in the Grand Bazaar’s labyrinthine alleys, where the scent of freshly ground coffee mixes with the tang of spices piled high in vibrant pyramids. Pause at a tiny tea stall, where the çaycı (tea master) pours steaming amber liquid into tulip-shaped glasses with practiced grace.
At sunset, join the locals on the Karaköy docks, where street vendors grill mackerel sandwiches wrapped in newspaper. The first bite is pure Istanbul— crispy bread giving way to smoky fish, the sharpness of onions cut by the sweetness of pomegranate molasses. As night falls, follow the sound of live music to a hidden meyhane in Beyoğlu, where plates of creamy hummus and fried mussels appear unbidden, accompanied by the melancholy strains of a saz (Turkish lute).
Some landscapes defy description. Cappadocia is one of them—a dreamscape of fairy chimneys and cave dwellings carved into soft volcanic rock. Wake before dawn to float above it all in a hot air balloon, watching as the rising sun paints the valleys in shades of rose and gold. Later, explore the underground cities where early Christians hid from persecution, running your fingers along grooves in the stone where oil lamps once burned.
The Turquoise Coast offers a different kind of magic. In Kaş, swim through crystalline waters to reach a sunken Lycian tomb, its intricate carvings still visible beneath the waves. Sail aboard a traditional gulet to hidden coves where the only sounds are the lap of water against wood and the distant cry of seagulls. As evening falls, dine on the deck under a canopy of stars, feasting on meze made with ingredients picked that morning—plump olives, tangy goat cheese, and tomatoes so ripe they burst with flavor at the slightest pressure.

What stays with you long after you leave are the moments of connection. The elderly shopkeeper who insists you try his homemade baklava “just one more piece.” The carpet seller who spends an hour explaining the meaning behind each intricate design, then refuses to let you leave without a cup of tea. The shepherd in the Taurus Mountains who shares his simple lunch of bread and cheese, pointing out the eagle circling overhead.
Turkey doesn’t just show you its beauty—it lets you live it, breathe it, become part of it. In the steam rising from a glass of apple tea, in the echo of footsteps through ancient streets, in the quiet contentment of a meal shared with new friends, you’ll find something rare and precious: the art of being truly present.
By the time you board your flight home, you’ll realize Turkey hasn’t just been a destination—it’s been a transformation. The scent of citrus blossoms clinging to your clothes, the taste of pistachio baklava lingering on your tongue, the memory of that perfect moment when the sun dipped below the horizon and set the sea aflame with color—these are the gifts Turkey gives, and they’re yours to keep forever.

Big Adventures, Just a Short Flight Away: Why Vietnam Is the Next Big Trip for Filipino Travelers
In Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the scent of star anise and beef broth rises from steaming bowls of phở as motorbikes weave through narrow streets lined with colonial-era buildings. Just a few hours by plane from Manila, Vietnam offers Filipino travelers a compelling mix of cultural familiarity and fresh discovery.
For those seeking a destination that blends adventure, culture, and convenience, Vietnam stands out. Its proximity to the Philippines means less time in transit and more time exploring, from the lantern-lit streets of Hội An to the dramatic limestone cliffs of Ha Long Bay. Visa-free entry for up to 21 days is available
to Filipino citizens, and a 90-day electronic visa can be obtained for longer stays, according to the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism. Direct flights from Manila to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang make the country accessible in under three hours.
Vietnam and the Philippines share cultural values centered on family, food, and community, creating a welcoming environment for Filipino visitors. Sapa’s terraced rice fields evoke the landscapes of Banaue, while Hội An’s preserved colonial streets resemble the historic town of Vigan. Phú Quốc’s beaches, with their clear waters and palm-lined shores, offer tropical scenery similar to Palawan but with a distinct Vietnamese character.
Affordability remains a key draw. Street food, boutique hotels, and guided tours tend to be competitively priced. Some travel agencies in the Philippines offer customized packages tailored to Filipino tastes, including culinary tours, cultural immersion, and beach vacations.

Vietnam’s cities present a blend of historic and modern elements. In Ho Chi Minh City, French colonial buildings stand alongside skyscrapers and bustling markets. Da Nang, a coastal city experiencing rapid development, serves as a gateway to sites such as the Marble Mountains and Hội An.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, home to Son Doong, the world’s largest cave. Beaches in Phú Quốc and Nha Trang offer white sand and coral reefs. Mui Ne’s red sand dunes attract visitors interested in kite surfing and sandboarding.
Vietnamese cuisine emphasizes fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. Popular dishes include phở, bánh mì, and chè, which are often familiar and affordable to Filipino palates. Cooking classes and street food tours provide opportunities to explore regional culinary traditions.
Cultural events such as Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year) and the Mid-Autumn Festival showcase Vietnam’s heritage through music, food, and community gatherings, elements that resonate with Filipino visitors.

Vietnam’s appeal to Filipino travelers is rooted in five key factors:
1. Cultural familiarity: Shared values around family, food, and hospitality make Vietnam feel welcoming and relatable.
2. Affordability: From street food to boutique hotels, Vietnam offers strong value for budgetconscious travelers.
3. Convenient access: Direct flights from Manila to major Vietnamese cities take under three hours.
4. Diverse destinations: The country offers a range of experiences, from mountain treks and historic towns to tropical beaches.
5. Flavorful cuisine: Vietnamese dishes like phở, bánh mì, and chè are fresh, balanced, and familiar to Filipino palates.
The Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism recommends several itineraries, including a seven-day tour covering Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and Ho Chi Minh City; a five-day coastal retreat featuring Da Nang, Hội An, and Nha Trang; and extended trips combining urban exploration with cave visits and Mekong Delta cruises.
Travelers should confirm visa requirements and check the latest travel advisories before planning their trip. Vietnam’s climate varies from tropical in the south to temperate in the north, so appropriate preparations are recommended. Local transportation options include motorbikes, trains, and domestic flights. Visitors are advised to respect local customs, such as modest dress at religious sites and removing shoes indoors. Accommodations and dining options are available across a wide budget range.
Vietnam continues to enforce health protocols and maintains medical facilities in major cities to ensure traveler safety. However, conditions may change, so travelers should consult official sources for up-to-date information.
The tourism authority welcomes travelers back to Vietnam whenever they are ready to return.
With its blend of tradition and modernity, Vietnam offers Filipino travelers a compelling destination in Southeast Asia.

SKAL International Nelson Mandela Bay is set to welcome the global SKAL community in 2026 as host of the 85th SKAL International World Congress. Following a successful bid during the 84th congress in Cusco, Peru last year, Nelson Mandela Bay will showcase the Eastern Cape and South Africa as a premier destination for tourism professionals, offering a unique opportunity for global networking, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
SKAL International Nelson Mandela Bay (SINMB) is confirmed as the host for the 85th SKAL International World Congress, scheduled to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa from 29 September to 2 October 2026. This follows a successful bid made during the 84th SKAL International World Congress held in Cusco, Peru in September 2025.

Delegates reaffirmed the city’s selection to host the 2026 edition, underscoring broad confidence in its readiness to stage a world-class event of this magnitude.
Last year’s gathering in Cusco drew attention for its vibrant networking and collaborative

The SKAL Asia Congress 2026 will bring together tourism and hospitality leaders from across the region in Macau from June 11 to 14. Hosted at the Grand Lisboa Palace, the event promises four days of networking, learning, and collaboration, showcasing Macau’s unique blend of cultural heritage and world-class hospitality.
Delegates can expect a comprehensive program that includes registration and welcome activities, keynote speaker sessions, industry workshops, destination tours, and a gala dinner. Participants will gain insights into emerging trends in sustainable tourism, hospitality innovation, and regional collaboration, reinforcing SKAL Asia’s role as a premier platform for professional exchange across the continent.
Macau’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy makes it an ideal host for the congress. Attendees will experience the city’s vibrant culinary scene, Portuguese and Chinese heritage, and exceptional hospitality offerings, while exploring how the destination continues to evolve as a key tourism hub in Asia.
The 2026 congress builds on the momentum from last year’s SKAL Asia Congress held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from June 26 to 29, 2025. That gathering brought together over 200 delegates from countries including Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and India, fostering cross-border collaboration and professional networking. Workshops and discussions in Colombo highlighted sustainable tourism practices and innovative approaches to regional hospitality, setting the stage for continued knowledge exchange across Asia.

Macau has a history of hosting successful SKAL Asia gatherings, and the upcoming congress continues this tradition. Previous events in the city have focused on gastronomy, culture, and business networking, demonstrating the destination’s ability to connect professionals while celebrating regional diversity. The 2026 congress promises to elevate this experience further, offering new opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
With registration now open, SKAL members and tourism professionals are encouraged to secure their participation in this landmark event. Beyond professional growth, the congress offers a chance to experience Macau’s heritage, strengthen regional partnerships, and celebrate the values of SKAL — unity, friendship, and excellence in tourism.

We also inducted new SKAL MAKATI members, Ms. Takako Okada and Ms. Cielo Reboredo. A warm welcome from SKAL MAKATI family!
Everyone enjoyed as well our traditional exchange gift, sharing the joy of giving with thoughtful gifts. The dance craze was a highlight as well for everyone. Congratulations to our winners who won the raffle prizes!

August 22, 2024, Let’s look back at our 4th Fellowship & Membership Meeting last year with SKAL International Makati!
We came together to celebrate “THE WINNING MOMENTS IN SKAL” at the elegant Raffles Makati last August 22, 2024.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us and to our co-sponsor, Ralph’s Wines & Spirits, for making the evening even more special!

TThere’s something magical about a place that feels like it’s been quietly waiting for you to arrive. Tawi-Tawi, the southernmost province of the Philippines, is that kind of place—beautiful, unassuming, and full of stories that make you feel both like an explorer and a welcomed guest.
Mention Tawi-Tawi and many will imagine remote islands far from the country’s busy tourist trails. And they’d be right—this is a land where the sea seems to go on forever, dotted with fishing boats and small islets, and where the horizon always looks a little closer to the heavens. But what’s surprising is how easily this “hidden” destination opens up once you’re here.
Bongao’s
Your adventure often begins in Bongao, the provincial capital. It’s a lively mix of sea breezes, bustling markets, and friendly faces. Locals greet strangers not as outsiders but as potential friends. Visit the public market and you’ll be drawn in by the colors—freshly caught fish glistening under the sun, piles of tropical fruits, and bundles of dried seaweed, a local delicacy Tawi-Tawi is proud of.
For those who love the outdoors, Bongao Peak is a must. It’s the island’s highest point and an easy but rewarding hike, with panoramic views of the sea and surrounding islands. Monkeys may join you along the way, curiously watching as you make your way up. At the summit, the air is fresh and salty, and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed into a postcard.
The province is home to over 300 islands, so hopping from one to another is part of the fun. Panampangan Island is often the star—imagine a powdery white sandbar stretching into clear, shallow waters that shimmer in shades of blue and green. Sit under the coconut trees and time slows down; the only rush you’ll feel is when you decide to take another swim.
Culturally, Tawi-Tawi is a treasure trove. It’s predominantly home to the Sama and Tausug people, whose traditions are deeply tied to the sea. Visit Sitangkai, often called the “Venice of the South,” where wooden houses stand on stilts and waterways replace streets. Watch seaweed farmers tend to their

livelihood or marvel at the craftsmanship of locally woven mats and boats.
Food here is as fresh as it gets. Don’t miss tasting tiyula itum, a black beef soup seasoned with burnt coconut, or fresh lato (sea grapes) dipped in vinegar. Meals are often shared in the open air, with the sea in view—a reminder that in Tawi-Tawi, life is lived closely with nature.
Getting to Tawi-Tawi is easier than you might think, with flights connecting from Zamboanga City. And while it’s far-flung, the
journey is part of the charm. This is not a place for hurried itineraries—it’s for slowing down, savoring moments, and letting the islands work their quiet magic on you.
In Tawi-Tawi, you’ll discover not just beautiful places but the warmth of people who call it home. And when you leave, you’ll carry more than photos—you’ll bring back a feeling you’ll want to return to again and again.

FFor decades, the idyllic island province of Siquijor has weaved an aura of mystery even to jaded travelers around the archipelago.
And despite its proximity to popular destinations, it is often skipped because of the perceived difficulties of getting there and its age-old image of witchcraft and sorcery.
Then came TV celebrity Anne Curtis’s trending “fairy walk” at Cambugahay Falls which registered over 112 million views on social media, and sent everyone scampering to Siquijor if only to replicate the sensational water stunt.
Getting there is as easy as riding a witch’s broomstick: Fly to Dumaguete City, hire a vehicle to the port, and board a fast craft for a 45-minute cruise and a slower and more chill roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) ship.
.Upon disembarking, you will be awed by the powdery white sand and azure water at the port of Siquijor, the province’s gateway and capital town. A few steps away is the postcard-pretty San Franciso de Assisi Church

where you can pose for a snapshot and say a prayer for a safe journey.
The neighboring town of San Juan is the tourist zone with its huge concentration of resorts, restaurants, and dive shops, and the longest stretch of fine beaches.
Instagrammable spots you shouldn’t miss are Pitogo Cliff Nature Park, and Capilay Spring Park at the public plaza, and Paliton Beach which is best towards sunset.
Lazi is a nature and culture hub, and takes pride with the San Isidro Labrador Church and the Lazi Convent, the Asia’s oldest and biggest, and recognized as a National Cultural Treasure. Located just across each other, they will transport you back to the 19th-century with their Old World charm.
There’s also the Century-Old Enchanted Balete Tree for a fish foot spa, and Hapitanan for souvenir shopping of novelty items, including healing herbal oils and potions.
The town’s piece de resistance is the multi-tiered Cambugahay Falls known for its blue-green water where visitors can do the “Tarzan swing” and the “Fairy Walk” stunts done by Anne Curtis.
Deeper into the woods is Mount Bandilaan National Park, a 212-hectare forest reserve at 557 meters above sea level, and has a 15-meter viewing tower with an unobstructed panoramic view of the entire island.
Don’t be deceived by the obscurity of Maria as it is home to a tourism gem—Salagdoong Beach which has a confluence of jagged rock formations, crystalline waters and powdery coves. It also has cliff diving platforms of varying heights, where Curtis also made a 30-foot leap.
For pasalubong, there’s Lilibeth’s Pan Bisaya in Enrique Villanueva which sells torta or a cake-like fluffy bread the oldfashioned way.
Last but not least is Larena town, with its mangrove forest and boardwalk park, and the upland Larena Triad Restaurant where you can dine while admiring the mesmerizing vista.
Seeking solace in Siquijor is indeed like falling for an enchanted spell which will linger for a long time.

Siargao may be known for its waves, but you don’t have to be a surfer to fall in love with the island. With its postcard beaches, evolving food scene, and easygoing charm, this Mindanao gem offers something for every kind of traveler—whether you’re chasing surf breaks, sipping cocktails by the sea, or petting every beach dog you meet (guilty).
On a recent four-day trip, we flew in via Sunlight Air and explored Siargao at our own pace—trying a bit of everything: boutique stays, sunset spots, and island adventures. From the moment we landed, it was clear: Siargao is more than just a destination—it’s a whole mood.
Getting there was a breeze, starting bright and early with a 4 a.m. Sunlight Air flight from Clark International Airport. By 7 a.m., we were landing in paradise. The boutique airline keeps things light—smooth check-in, warm service, and a full breakfast onboard.
We checked in at KATIG Beachfront Boutique Hotel, a minimalist, Filipino-inspired resort with just 11 rooms—six facing the ocean. The clean, modern design is grounded in local touches: wooden boat keychains, open-air bathrooms with skylights, and verandas perfect for sunrise coffee. It’s beachfront in every sense, peaceful without being too quiet.

Spanish seafood, sunset food stops
In one of the island’s quieter corners, Alma Siargao brings the Mediterranean to Mindanao. Chef Luis Martinez personally sources fresh seafood each morning, turning them into Spanish staples like paella, gambas, and smoked duck breast. The space is intimate and elegant—perfect for slow dinners and rooftop sunset drinks.
Another standout is Siago Beach Resort, a passion project by couple Maite Ortoll and Kris Garcia. With just nine rooms and a three-bedroom residence, it blends tropical elegance with homegrown charm. The restaurant serves Peruvian lomo saltado, Filipino comfort dishes, and Yardstick coffee—making it a brunch favorite even for locals.
Meanwhile, LOKA Siargao near Cloud 9 offers a lively vibe—cocktails, small plates, and beachside music. We arrived during a merch collab launch with surf brand Gwapitos, complete with DJs, games, and one of the trip’s best sunsets.
Speaking of sunsets, don’t miss Katangnan Bridge, or “Afam Bridge” to locals. It’s the golden-hour hangout for snacks, people-watching, and watching the sky turn gold. No plan needed—just show up and take it all in.
Three’s the charm
Island-hopping is a must. The classic tour to Guyam, Naked, and Daku Islands offers a little of everything: a pristine sandbar, a palm-fringed escape, and a boodle

lunch under the trees. Daku Island stood out with its sweet coconuts, powder-white sand, and no-electricity charm—just swimming, feasting, and napping under a nipa hut.
Back on the main island, runners will love Siargao’s long roads and early-morning beach jogs. And yes, the island dogs are as friendly as they look.
Beyond General Luna, Magsaysay Sunset Viewpoint offers golden-hour views without the crowds— rolling hills and rice fields instead of surfboards and umbrellas.
More places to explore
Pasikon Beach in San Benito is raw and peaceful, often empty. Sugba Lagoon in Del Carmen is an aquamarine paradise for paddleboarding, kayaking, and leaping from its wooden diving board.
For something unique, Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar appear only at low tide—sparkling basins perfect for wading or cliff-jumping. Inland, Taktak Falls in Santa Monica is the island’s only waterfall, with a scenic path and a plunge pool deep enough for a rope swing.
Siargao hits different. It’s not just the views or food—it’s the rhythm. Whether sipping coffee by the beach, watching a cloudy sunset from a crowded bridge, or dozing off after grilled seafood on a remote island, it all just feels right.
Four days barely scratch the surface. Siargao doesn’t just deliver—it lingers.

When membership in the Skal Club of the Philippines increased, it was decided to spread to other areas the spirit of amicale (French for friendship) that Skal is known for. The first of such units was the Skal Club of Makati, formed 44 years ago on August 29, 1981, by approximately 15 prospective members.
Among them were Skalleagues
Ofri Canlas, Manny Salientes, Tony Chuidian, Oxy Roxas, Liela Salgado, Salvador Gomez, Tachie Francisco, Robert Joseph and others. With two chapter clubs in the country, the national committee was then organized with the late Felipe Juico as the First Skal Club of the Philippines national president.
The Skal Club of Makati has since been in the forefront of the Skal movement. It was instrumental in winning the bid to host the 12th AISC World Congress in Manila in 1982. The club was also successful in 1984 to bid for the 12th Skal Asia Pacific Conference which was held in Makati.

On the homefront, the promotion of travel and tourism by the Skal Club of Makati is being undertaken annually in the form of the prestigious Skal Awards for tourism personalities, currently on its 32th year. This award gives due

recognition to tourism personalities who have lived up to Skal’s goals and objectives, and have invaluably served and contributed to the growth of the tourism and travel industry.
The Skal Club of Makati is based in the premier city of the country where business and luxury hotels are located. The Club enhanced Makati’s tourism potential, initiating the project “Makati-Makati” which ran for three successful years. This was made possible under the auspices of the Municipality of Makati, the Department of Tourism and the Ayala Corporation. This project was held in conjunction with Makati’s foundation day and featured a full week of activities such as Flores de Mayo, exhibitions, sports events, art and music festivals and other charitable activities like free medical and dental services for the indigents of Makati.
No doubt, the Skal movement in the Philippines has gone a long way and will continue to do so for years to come. The spirit of amicale lives deep in the hearts of its members. Because of this strong spirit, the Skal Club of Makati will remain a catalyst and prime mover of activities that promote the Skal ideals.

Skål International cares about young professionals and students in tourism. In 1999, Young Skål was set up with the aim of creating a greater awareness of Skål International by those young people studying for or training in the various sectors of the travel and tourism industry, enabling them to join Skål.
Many Clubs provide scholarships for students in tourism. Young people are bringing to Skål their innovative power and they will benefit from the experience of the active members who may become prospective employers. In the hard competitive world, as Skål embraces all sectors of the tourism industry, it can act as an oasis free of competition, where they can find protection and support and they might even meet their mentors!
Young Skål is a special membership category for tourism students or young professionals in the travel and tourism industry. Those young persons who qualify for Active membership cannot be approved as Young Skål members purely on the grounds of age. They must have been a student or young professional in one of the classifications described in Article I section 1.2. of the Skål Bylaws for at least one year.
THE REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A YOUNG SKÅL MEMBER ARE:
(a) Young Skål Student is a student at an authorized, tourism, educational establishment which
grants a degree or recognized diploma upon completion of studies. They must be a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 27 years of age.
(b) Young Skål Professional is a young professional training for or working in the industry. They must be a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 29 years of age.
(c) Young Skål Associate is a Young Skål Professional still training for or working in the industry after the age of 29 who does not yet qualify for Active membership may continue as Young Skål Associate member until the age of 35.
THE OBJECTIVES OF YOUNG SKÅL ARE:
To develop friendship and common purpose between the students of the educational establishment, by participating in areas related to the tourism industry, but also in cultural, sports, travel and public relations activities.
To encourage and assist in the tourism education or experience of the members by participating in Skål activities and meeting Skål members.
To cooperate voluntarily in all Skål activities and the organization set up by the sponsoring Club.
To promote training opportunities for its members and to acquire professional experience with the support of the local Skål Club.
To ensure that its members are fully aware of Skål, locally, nationally and internationally.
Clubs may transfer Young Skål members who qualify to Active membership at any time, once eligibility has been established.
Young Skål members may attend Skål World Congresses availing themselves of possible special discounts at the discretion of the host Club.
Young Skål members who leave the training institute and do not enter the industry or if employed depart from an industry position would cease to be eligible for membership.
Skål Clubs should take care when selecting Young Skål members to ensure that the management intentions and potential are clearly evident to avoid situations whereby Young Skål members have to leave the Club at the age of 35 because they are not eligible for Active membership.
Young Skål members should also be encouraged to use the “Member Get Member” approach to increase membership in their Club.

Young SKAL is a category of SKAL International specifically for students and young professional directly related to the travel and tourism industry.
Young SKAL is open to all young professional training for, or in, the industries who are between the ages of 20 and 29 years, and who have been in the industry for a minimum of two years.
The idea behind Young SKAL is to ensure that clubs attract new and young professionals training for, or working in, the industry, who when qualified will automatically graduate to active membership thus ensuring a continuous supply of new and younger members.
The international fee for young SKAL membership is 10 Euros.
Applicants for Young SKAL membership should be training at a recognized university or travel school, or working in one of the approved classifications set out in the SKAL International by-Laws.
Twenty countries have now been successful in getting Young SKAL members as part of their clubs.
Each networking opportunity arranged encourages an educational experience, were young executives strive to get first-hand experience of a property, cuisine or tourist attraction where the function is being held.
The term “networking” is being used, but the practice of networking is still in the process of being perfected among the Young SKAL members. They learn through experience in the importance of who you know, instead of what you know. It is the knowledge of this which is the motivation to stay with SKAL International when they reach the age of 29.
Young Executives do not always share the same work benefits and privileges as seen with the other members of SKAL International. They often need to pay closer attention to their funds and often have time restraints, where time off needs to be requested. It is for that reason that Young SKAL functions need to be advertised well in advance, in order for young Skalleagues to budget for the function and request the time off in order to ensure attendance.
So far 20 countries have Young SKAL Members in their clubs: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Kenya, Kyrenia, PHILIPPINES, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey and United Kingdom. If you feel there is potential for inviting young executives to your club, meetings, and need guidance. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Along with the General Secretariat, we will be happy to guide you.
We would happy to hear success stories from Young SKAL members about the benefits you have already achieved. Please use the following contact details to fill us in: international.communications@skal.travel
Let’s embrace the Young SKAL members; we can all inspire and learn from each other. Let us all invest in the future of SKAL International. There is no reason to wait any longer.
