Celebrating 11 Years of Stories That Shape Philippine Travel Experience

This 11th anniversary issue marks a meaningful milestone for Experience Travel & Living, and we are proud to celebrate it with a destination and property that capture the essence of discovery: Horizon Hotel Romblon set against the backdrop of a province known worldwide for its fine marble—often compared to Italy’s Carrara—Horizon stands as a testament to how hospitality can elevate a destination’s identity. Once part of an island group whispered about for its hidden beauty, Romblon today emerges with pristine shores, eco-adventures, skilled artisans, and now, a standout hotel that reflects the province’s rise. Horizon Hotel becomes the perfect anniversary cover— symbolizing vision, growth, and the promise of new horizons.

Our journey began in 2014 with Amorita Resort in Bohol, a boutique gem that set the tone for homegrown excellence. We celebrated culture through the spirited Iloilo Dinagyang Festival, and explored eco-conscious luxury through Lio Estate in El Nido, home to one of our most glamorous celebrity covers.

everywhere. In hospitality, we’ve championed properties that have built their names through consistency. Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, one of the rare hotels to appear in back-toback covers, has grown into a dependable urban landmark with an expanded tower and elevated guest experience.

Meanwhile, Dusit Thani Manila remains a pillar of timeless luxury. For over 40 years, it has welcomed guests with a blend of Filipino warmth and Thai heritage—proving that legacy hotels stay relevant by evolving with grace.

We witnessed Filipino innovation reach global heights through Olivia Quido, whose rise continues to inspire entrepreneurs

We also highlighted transformative leadership from Mayor Jeannie Sandoval of Malabon, and celebrated emerging destinations like Siquijor, once mystical, now among the trendiest Philippine islands. In aviation, Stanley Ng of PAL represented youthful leadership guiding a historic brand toward renewal.

Eleven years on, our mission remains clear: to honor the people, places, and stories that define Philippine travel.

Here’s to new horizons—bolder, brighter, and proudly Filipino.

editor's Note

11.11! That’s 11 years, folks. To celebrate, we didn’t just dig for new stories—we dug up the best of the best. Expect secret spots, local legends, and experiences that made us gasp, smile, and plan our next getaway.

Compiling these stories reminded us why we do what we do: we chase curiosity, celebrate the unexpected, and share the moments that make travel unforgettable. This issue is our little nostalgia-meets-adventure capsule, a love letter to the journeys that have inspired us, the people who have welcomed us, and the hidden corners of the Philippines that still take our breath away.

Flip through, linger on the pages, and let yourself get curious. Maybe you’ll spot a place you’ve been meaning to visit—or discover one you never knew existed. Adventure, after all, isn’t just about ticking destinations off a list—it’s about noticing the magic in every moment, and sharing it with others. So here’s to 11 years of stories, of wanderlust, and of the unforgettable experiences that keep us exploring. And here’s to you, our fellow travelers, for reading along, dreaming along, and reminding us that the best journeys are the ones shared.

Enjoy the read!

SM CINEMA UNVEILS THE COUNTRY’S FIRST at sm malL of asia

M Cinema raises the bar once again with the launch of the Philippines’ first SCREENX theater at SM Mall of Asia, marking a major milestone in immersive moviegoing. Through its partnership with CJ 4DPLEX, a global leader in next-generation cinema technologies, the new format surrounds audiences with a 270-degree panoramic view, extending the film beyond the main screen and onto the side walls. The result is a visually expansive, hyper-immersive experience that pulls viewers deeper into every scene.

The unveiling brought together key leaders from both companies, including SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, SM Engineering Design and Development Corporation President Hans “Chico” Sy Jr., CJ 4DPLEX CEO Don Savant, APAC Managing Director Jamil Valiyev, and SM Cinema Senior Assistant Vice President Karen Zabaljauregui. Their presence underscored the significance of SCREENX’s arrival in the country and its role in the future of premium entertainment.

Audiences are introduced to this breakthrough format through “Wicked: For Good,” the much-anticipated sequel starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, which makes history as the first film presented in SCREENX in the Philippines. Tickets are available at

Php700, offering moviegoers a chance to experience the story through sweeping, peripheral imagery. More SCREENX titles are set to follow later this year, including “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

SM Cinema, the nation’s largest film exhibitor operating more than 300 screens across 78 branches, continues to expand

its portfolio of advanced formats. IMAX, Directors Club, and now SCREENX strengthen its commitment to worldclass entertainment—delivering cuttingedge technology, elevated comfort, and exceptional storytelling environments for Filipino audiences.

PANGLAO’S

LITTLE DARLING

Returning to where our story began, we revisit Amorita Resort—Panglao’s beloved cliffside haven that continues to define Filipino hospitality and heartfelt luxury.

More than a destination, it’s a lasting reminder of why we fell in love with travel in the first place.

They say you never forget your first—and for us at Experience Travel and Living, Amorita Resort in Bohol will always be unforgettable. When we launched our very first issue in 2014, it was Amorita that graced the cover. Looking back, that choice feels serendipitous: this cliffside sanctuary has always embodied the heartfelt hospitality and thoughtful luxury that inspire lasting stories.

Set on a limestone bluff overlooking Alona Beach, Amorita enjoys one of the most striking locations in Panglao. Guests are treated to sweeping views of the Bohol Sea, with easy access to the lively shoreline below. Its Spanish name, meaning “little darling,”

captures its essence perfectly—elegant yet endearing, refined but never unapproachable.

Through the years, Amorita has grown while preserving its intimate atmosphere. It now features 98 accommodations, including 82 suites and 16 villas, some with private plunge pools for added seclusion. Two infinity pools, a wellness spa, a fitness center, and three dining outlets round out the experience, inviting guests to move seamlessly from relaxation to adventure.

RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE

Amorita’s commitment to excellence has earned it global recognition. In 2024, it received its sixth Condé Nast Johansens Award for Excellence, honored as Best for Weddings, Parties & Celebrations. It has also been inducted into the ASEAN Green Hotel Hall of Fame for its consistent eco-friendly practices, from sustainable operations to active support for community and marine initiatives. Repeated TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards further affirm its place among the world’s most beloved resorts.

Yet beyond accolades, what truly defines Amorita is how it makes people feel. Guests return year after year—not just for

the views or villas—but for the warmth of a team that remembers names, preferences, and the little details that make each stay personal.

Now 18 years since opening in 2007, Amorita remains Panglao’s little darling—a resort where luxury is defined not only by beauty and comfort but by the feeling of being genuinely cared for. Like your first love, it’s the kind of place you never truly forget.

Dinagyang

Faith in fulL color at the Festival

It began in 1968, when Ilonggos first brought their devotion to Señor Santo Niño to the streets of Iloilo. What started as a small act of faith—an echo of Cebu’s Sinulog—quickly grew into something uniquely Ilonggo. The early celebrations were intimate yet powerful, filled with the sound of drums and the sight of tribes painted in gold and soot, dancing with fervor and gratitude. Each movement was a prayer in motion, each beat a reminder of the community’s shared faith and identity.

FROM STREET DEVOTION TO GLOBAL STAGE

Over the decades, that same spirit has evolved into one of the Philippines’ most acclaimed cultural festivals, blending heritage with modern artistry. Today, the grand performances at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand dazzle both local

and international audiences. Delegations, diplomats, and travelers from abroad have also found their way to the city, drawn by the festival’s energy and meaning. Dinagyang’s artistry has even reached global stages, with performing tribes invited to showcase Iloilo’s culture in Japan, New Zealand, and beyond. Dancers still move barefoot, their devotion unchanged, but technology now amplifies their art—LED-lit costumes, digital stage designs, and livestream broadcasts carry the story of Dinagyang across the world.

The 2025 celebration, held last January with the theme “Buhi nga Pagtuo sa Kinabuhi sang mga Ilonggo” (Living Faith in the Lives of the Ilonggos), beautifully captured this enduring harmony between faith and progress. The message resonated through every performance: that Dinagyang is not just a festival, but a living tradition—one that beats with the same devotion that began more than five decades ago.

Behind this evolution lies a collective commitment to preserve authenticity. The Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc., in partnership with the city government, ensures that every new layer of innovation is grounded in tradition. Workshops for young performers and artisans keep the festival’s essence alive, teaching not just how to dance, but why it matters. Costume makers and craftsmen continue to draw from local materials and indigenous designs, making sure the festival remains proudly rooted in place.

More than a spectacle, Dinagyang stands as proof that faith and culture can evolve hand in hand—timeless, heartfelt, and ever alive in Iloilo.

Dinagyang is not just a festival —it’s a living tradition, beating with the same devotion for over five decades.

Lio Estate

Growing greener in palawan

From blueprint to benchmark, Lio Estate continues to bloom—proving that progress can be both beautiful and sustainable.”

When we first featured Lio Estate in 2018, it felt like meeting someone at the start of their journey—hopeful, ambitious, and full of promise. Ayala Land’s vision was daring: to create an eco-estate in El Nido where nature and development could walk side by side. Back then, Lio was more of a dream than a destination, a blueprint waiting to come alive.

In our magazine’s own journey, Lio stands out—a destination once brought to life by Priscilla Meirelles and Anechka Estrada, whose presence reflected the place’s blend of grace and natural allure.

Today, that promise has flourished. Lio has become one of El Nido’s defining ecodestinations, drawing travelers who seek comfort without compromise. It proves that mindful development is not only possible, but magnetic.

WHAT Lio HAS BECOME

Anchored by its golden shoreline, Lio hums with an energy that feels both lively and unhurried. Resorts and boutique stays blend with the landscape, while familyrun cafés, local restaurants, and craft shops line the beachfront. It doesn’t feel built—it feels grown.

Nearly half of the 325-hectare estate remains undeveloped, preserving mangroves, forests, and wetlands that sustain El Nido’s delicate ecosystem. Solar

panels now power a significant share of daytime energy use across several resorts, while waste management and conservation programs are part of daily operations. These efforts have positioned Lio as a model for sustainable tourism—where environmental responsibility guides every step of growth.

Equally meaningful is its human story. The estate has opened doors for local employment in hospitality, retail, and ecotourism, allowing communities to share in El Nido’s progress. Visitors, meanwhile, experience a place shaped by genuine care—for land, people, and purpose.

We haven’t returned since that first feature, but even from afar, Lio’s journey continues to inspire. Like people, places evolve. And Lio’s evolution reminds us why we write— to celebrate progress, preserve memory, and share how travel continues to shape the Philippines.

Finding My Inner Zen at Likha

My recent visit to Likha Wellness Resort was a truly meaningful journey of discovery and relaxation. True to its name, meaning “to create,” Likha fosters an environment where memories are crafted through a holistic approach to well-being—embracing the mental, physical, and spiritual. Situated on a 1.5-hectare property in Barangay Bolbok, Lipa, Batangas, the resort offers more than just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to a personalized wellness experience. As owner Erica Eddun shared, their philosophy is that “wellness should be as unique as the individual,” ensuring each guest’s journey is distinctly their own.

A Symphony of Sound and Touch

My immersion began with an extraordinary sound healing session, expertly guided by Ms. Marissa. The gentle yet powerful vibrations eased my mind from daily stresses, leaving me mentally refreshed, emotionally lighter, and profoundly centered—a true melody for the soul. This calming experience was complemented by a blissful Haplos massage, delivered by skilled therapists from Elite Salon and Body Spa. The name “Haplos,” meaning “touch” or “caress,” perfectly captures the experience—an indulgent treatment that released tension and promoted deep relaxation. Between the sound bath and the massage, I felt completely renewed.

Thoughtfully Designed Amenities and Atmosphere

Likha Wellness distinguishes itself through thoughtfully designed amenities, crafted to enhance relaxation. Room types are varied, configured for different numbers of occupants, with the exclusive option of renting out the entire villa for ultimate privacy. Guests can unwind in the heated swimming pool, jacuzzi sunken lounges, outdoor bathhouse, sauna, pavilion amphitheater, gazebo firepits, or meditation patio. Indoors, the cozy sunken living room is ideal for intimate gatherings. Surrounded by fruit-bearing trees, the property invites guests to reconnect with nature. Activities like IV drips, yoga, massages, and creative workshops are also available for a more personalized stay.

Effortless Luxury and Dedicated Service

What truly sets Likha apart is its inclusive and seamless butler service.

From reservation to check-out, a dedicated personal butler meticulously takes care of every detail—arranging bespoke activities, tailoring nutritious meals, and assisting with personal errands. This thoughtful service empowers guests to fully immerse themselves in the resort’s comprehensive wellness experience.

Behind the scenes, Approche Hospitality

Management ensures the seamless operation of Likha’s lean yet highly effective team. Their warmth, genuine hospitality, and professionalism elevate the resort’s atmosphere, contributing significantly to its reputation for mindful luxury.

Opening its doors to the public in the first quarter of 2025, Likha Wellness Resort is poised to stand as a genuine sanctuary of renewal—a place where inspiring spaces nurture creativity and where personal wellness journeys are beautifully crafted within the still comfort of nature.

From her beginnings in a small spa to leading global partnerships at Miss Universe, Olivia Quido’s journey shows that true success grows from trusting in what you do and staying committed to it. Romblon

The Philippines’ Best-Kept Secret: Crystal-Clear Waters, Hidden Sandbars, and Traditions that Captivate

Romblon is shedding its marble-only image, revealing islands of rugged peaks, pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and the warmth of the Romblomanons.

Cliffs pierce the sky, reefs shimmer beneath crystal waters, and sandbars emerge like hidden secrets at low tide. The province of Romblon is shedding its marble-only image, revealing islands of rugged peaks, pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and the warmth and familial spirit of the Romblomanons.

Located in the Mimaropa region (Region 4-B), this cluster of islands brims with hidden-gem energy, with discoveries waiting at every turn.

Far from the sprawl of commercial resorts and untouched by the constant ping of connectivity, Romblon offers an invitation to pause, breathe, and connect not to WiFi, but to the world around you.

Here, the digital world gradually fades, and Romblon’s raw beauty takes center stage. Each trail, wave, and festival feels fuller, richer, and infinitely more alive when you give yourself completely to the moment.

Commercial flights may be on pause, but the overnight ferry from Batangas Pier or Lucena offers a scenic, intimate journey to the islands, allowing travelers to arrive already immersed in Romblon’s serene charm.

Romblon, long celebrated as the country’s Marble Capital, is now embracing a thrilling horizon of ecotourism, adventure, and culture under the leadership and guidance of its first female governor, Trina Firmalo-Fabic.

FROM STONE TO SHORES

This year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) broke ground on Romblon’s first ecotourism village, a two-hectare project on Carabao Island in San Jose.

The village will feature model houses inspired by traditional Ati architecture, a cultural information center, galleries, performance spaces, and a souvenir shop. Thoughtful amenities, including accessible restrooms, changing rooms, a breastfeeding station, and shaded rest areas, ensure the site is welcoming to all visitors.

“This ambitious initiative will showcase Romblon’s natural beauty while celebrating its cultural heritage,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said at the groundbreaking.

PRESERVING THE PAST, PROTECTING THE FUTURE

Sustainability is central to the project. A memorandum of agreement signed by the DOT, TIEZA, and local officials commits the partners to restore timberland through tree planting, remove invasive species, and strengthen community-based conservation programs.

The Ati, Romblon’s indigenous people, are central to the village, guiding its design

and experiences so that culture becomes a living, tangible part of the journey.

PEAKS AND CORAL DREAMS

Romblon’s landscapes are as dramatic as its heritage. Mount Guiting-Guiting, or “G2,” rises 2,058 meters above Sibuyan Island, its jagged ridges daring even seasoned climbers.

For gentler adventures, Carabao Island –locally called Hambil – offers quiet beaches with sand so white it almost glows, and turquoise waters that stretch to the horizon.

Cresta de Gallo, a sandbar south of Sibuyan Island, emerges at low tide like a ribbon of untouched sand over flourishing coral

reefs. Off Tablas Island, divers plunge into the Blue Hole, the country’s only known underwater sinkhole.

Bonbon Beach near Romblon town reveals a sandbar at low tide, while the Looc Fish Sanctuary lets visitors snorkel among reef fish and giant clams – or watch them from a floating kiosk.

The Marble Capital is transforming, entwining its rugged landscapes with programs that celebrate indigenous heritage and safeguard nature.

THROUGH LOCAL EYES

During a media trip to the Approche Hospitality-managed Horizon Hotel,

Municipal Mayor Gerard Sy Montojo shared the town’s history, its deep spiritual devotion, and his vision for tourism that preserves its charm while welcoming visitors.

“Before, transport was really difficult,” Montojo said. “Our boats were made of wood, and almost every day we had trips to Lucena and Batangas. I even slept on the boat once, beside sacks of rice and pigs.”

The town has continued to attract tourists –predominantly Filipinos, who now account for up to 80 percent of arrivals – despite ongoing challenges.

“Especially during summer, our boats and resorts are fully booked. It’s heartwarming to

see our kababayan come back year after year,” he said. Most accommodations remain small, with only a few larger properties like Horizon Hotel. “Here, almost everyone knows each other,” Montojo added.

A TOWN’S MIRACULOUS HEART

The Santo Niño festival is central to the town’s spiritual life. “After seven failed attempts by the Spaniards to leave, the Santo Niño seemed to choose to stay,” Montojo said.

“The image was stolen in 1991 and recovered in 2013. When we recovered it, it was bare, without its gold and crown. The sisters who dress it annually confirmed it was indeed our Santo Niño.”

Montojo described miracles attributed to the image. “During Yolanda, we were supposed to be hit directly by the super typhoon. Even with all preparations, with winds at 350 kph, all you could do was wait. But when we brought the Santo Niño out in the procession, the storm shifted direction.”

He also noted the personal and generational devotion: “I will personally dress the Santo Niño in 2025, and my children are already listed to continue the tradition.”

TOURISM ON THEIR TERMS

Montojo advocates a balanced approach to tourism. “I don’t want the beaches or the environment overexploited. That’s why Bonbon Beach is considered one of the 30 best beaches in the world – it’s not crowded, and it remains natural,” he said.

Public access has been opened for visitors, with systems in place to maintain cleanliness. “While some leave behind litter, we quickly restore order to keep Romblon clean and welcoming,” he said.

“In the end, I just want to keep Romblon beautiful – not too much, not too little, just right,” Montojo said.

When a place can steal your breath, ignite your curiosity, and leave your heart lingering long after you leave, how long will you wait before you let Romblon captivate you?

dusit thani manila

An enduring icon of Makati’s luxury scene, Dusit Thani Manila reimagines Thai hospitality for today’s discerning traveller.

Back in 2016, our magazine had the pleasure of featuring Dusit Thani Manila, capturing its blend of Thai elegance and Filipino warmth in the heart of Makati. By that time, the majority of the guestrooms and suites had already been renovated, unveiling lighter, contemporary interiors accented with gold details and lotus-inspired artwork, replacing the darker tones of the past. From the gleaming gold lobby to the delicate melody of a kim—a traditional Thai hammered dulcimer— welcoming guests, Dusit Thani Manila was more than a place to stay—it was a home where Thai grace and Filipino warmth seamlessly intertwined.

Since that feature, the hotel has continued to evolve with thoughtful transformations. Wooden furnishings crafted by Cebu artisans blend Filipino craftsmanship with Thai sophistication. Dining and leisure experiences remain vibrant: Benjarong

An icon reborn, Dusit Thani Manila proves that tradition and innovation can coexist beautifully.

continues as a premier Thai fine dining destination, The Pantry thrives as a favorite all-day restaurant offering a wide variety of local and international dishes, and the Dusit Club Lounge provides an exclusive rooftop retreat for private check-ins, refreshments, and evening cocktails.

Dusit International has also expanded its footprint across the Philippines. Dusit D2 Davao opened in 2019 in the

emerging business district of Lanang, introducing contemporary luxury to Mindanao. Alongside it, Dusit Thani Residence Davao, also launched in 2019, offers fully serviced apartments for short or extended stays, combining convenience with full-service Thai-inspired hospitality. In the Visayas, Dusit Thani Mactan Cebu Resort presents a beachfront escape infused with Thai design and service. Closer to Manila, Dusit D2 The Fort caters to lifestyle-focused travelers. Looking ahead, Dusit Greenhills Manila is set to welcome guests in late 2026 with 200 rooms, a rooftop bar, and banquet facilities, offering yet another urban retreat.

These developments reflect Dusit International’s commitment to evolving with the needs of modern travelers while honoring its heritage.

Malabon Leading in Motion

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval is leading Malabon with practical, people-focused progress.

Whenour media team visited Malabon to feature Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, we were immediately drawn in—not just by the city’s energy, but by the way she moves through it. There’s a warmth to her presence, a quiet attentiveness that makes each encounter feel personal. Covering her story wasn’t just an assignment; it was a chance to witness how leadership can feel alive, human, and full of heart.

Her vision for Malabon is clear: a city where families feel secure, businesses flourish, and public services reach everyone efficiently. The Malabon Ahon Blue Card (MABC) exemplifies this—more than 93,000 households now connect to essential aid without

endless lines or waiting. In Barangay Panghulo, the St. Gregory Homes Project offers over 1,300 climate-resilient homes, recognized nationally for sustainable design. Walking past the neatly arranged blocks, you can sense not just buildings, but hope anchored in safety and stability.

But what truly sets Sandoval’s leadership apart is how it’s lived daily. She listens—online, in barangay halls, and on the streets— turning feedback into real solutions. Residents feel seen, their voices shaping the city’s rhythm. “For me, leadership is not about power or position—it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives,” she shares, and her actions echo that sentiment.

Malabon today hums with quiet confidence. The air carries the scent of cooking pancit, the sounds of children playing in newly safe spaces, and the pulse of a community rediscovering its stride. City programs, digital initiatives, and housing projects move in harmony with everyday life, reflecting a leadership style that values connection as much as results. For our team, telling this story was a delight: capturing a city in motion, guided by a leader whose progress is measured not in announcements, but in the lived experience of its people.

sogo cares

Healing, Helping, and Giving Back to Communities Nationwide

At the heart of Hotel Sogo’s corporate social responsibility program is a simple promise: to extend care beyond its hotels. Through Sogo Cares, this comes alive—delivering medical aid, relief support, and educational supplies across the Philippines.

BRINGING HEALTH CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE

Access to healthcare remains a challenge for many Filipinos. Sogo Cares brings doctors, medicines, and volunteers directly to those in need. From Tarlac to Cabanatuan, Pampanga to Naga, Quezon Province, Batangas, and Pangasinan, thousands received free check-ups, consultations, and medicines. For farmers, tricycle drivers, and fisherfolk families, these missions offer relief and hope.

In 20 months, over 30,000 patients benefited from 90 medical mission sites nationwide, showcasing dedication to accessible healthcare.

STANDING STRONG IN TIMES OF CALAMITY

When disasters hit, Sogo Cares responds swiftly. From typhoon-affected families in Cebu to flood-stricken communities in Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and indigenous groups in Batangas and Mindoro, relief packs, food, water, and blankets were delivered. These efforts provide essentials and solidarity, reminding evacuees they are not alone. In 2024–2025, more than 80,000 individuals received support through calamity donations.

NURTURING THE FUTURE

Education is a key pillar. Through Brigada Eskwela, Sogo Cares aided over 50,000 students and teachers in 100 schools, supplying cleaning tools and materials. Hotel Sogo volunteers joined parents and teachers to repaint classrooms, repair facilities, and organize supplies, creating safe, inspiring learning environments.

A LEGACY OF COMPASSION

From January 2024 to August 2025, Sogo Cares impacted over 200,000 Filipinos— stories of healed children, relieved mothers, and equipped teachers. It’s more than a program; it’s a movement of compassion. For Hotel Sogo, caring extends to every community, embodying:

“So Clean… So Good!” — and always, So Caring.

The Island That Believed in Its

own magic

From myth and mystery to timeless allure, Siquijor continues to cast its quiet spell on travellers.

A decade ago, Experience Travel & Living turned its gaze toward Siquijor—a small island that, at the time, lived mostly in the margins of Philippine travel maps. The magazine saw what few others had: a destination of raw charm and gentle mystique, whose beauty spoke softly but stayed with you long after you left.

Today, Siquijor is no longer a secret shared in hushed tones. It has found its place among the country’s most captivating getaways, enchanting travelers not through legend, but through lived experience— clear waters, open skies, and the unhurried rhythm of island life.

WHEN A FAIRY WALK WENT VIRAL

That sense of wonder resurfaced earlier this year when Anne Curtis posted her now-viral “fairy walk” video on Instagram, filmed at Cambugahay Falls. The short clip showed her gliding gracefully across the water on a rope swing, framed by the falls’ turquoise pools and lush greenery. Her caption, “Huwag muna tayo umuwi. Hello, Siquijor. #DayOffNiMia,” perfectly captured the feeling that Siquijor inspires—a wish for time to stand still, if only for a moment.

From mystical beginnings to modern acclaim, Siquijor’s story is one of quiet transformation.

Located in Lazi, Cambugahay Falls remains one of Siquijor’s most beloved spots, known for its gentle cascades and emerald tiers. Along the coast, Paliton Beach in San Juan draws sunset seekers, while Salagdoong Beach in Maria invites the bold to leap from limestone cliffs into its bright, glassy waters.

From mystical beginnings to modern acclaim, Siquijor’s journey reflects a shift in how travelers see the world: searching less for spectacle, and more for sincerity. The island’s magic endures, not in myth, but in its landscapes, its people, and the quiet moments it offers to those who find their way here.

Taking Flight in Leadership

A visionary leader who guided Philippine Airlines through recovery and into a new era of confidence.

When Capt. Stanley K. Ng was featured last year in our magazine, his story captured a moment of optimism — the rise of a young leader ready to guide the country’s flag carrier toward a brighter horizon. As the youngest-ever president of Philippine Airlines and the first active pilot to hold the role since 1963, his appointment marked a historic chapter for the airline. It was a story of renewal and confidence in fresh leadership — one that proved well placed during his tenure.

Ng served as PAL’s president and chief operating officer from January 2022 until May 2025. During this period, he guided the airline through disciplined recovery and thoughtful expansion. PAL sustained profitability and strengthened its position in a competitive global landscape, with

financial performance exceeding industry averages. Route expansion followed, highlighted by the launch of the Manila–Seattle nonstop service — the airline’s first new U.S. destination in nearly a decade — and the return of key domestic and regional flights such as Cebu–Osaka and Clark–Siargao.

Operational reliability and customer satisfaction also improved under his leadership. Ng’s approach, informed by his background as a pilot, combined precision, calm, and a deep respect for safety. He consistently emphasized that PAL’s people are its greatest asset, fostering collaboration and shared purpose across the organization. His forward vision extended to sustainability as well. PAL committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and began adopting fuel-efficient practices and greener operations. For Ng, progress meant balancing the airline’s rich legacy with the responsibility to prepare it for a cleaner, more connected future.

Today, having concluded his tenure as president, Ng continues to influence the airline as Vice President of PAL Holdings and a member of its Board of Directors. His time at the helm is remembered as a period of strategic growth, renewed confidence, and inspiration — proof that thoughtful leadership can lift not just planes, but an entire nation’s pride in its wings.

HE reminded us that leadership isn’t just about reaching destinations, but elevating everyone on the journey.

mindanao weaves take the world

Southern Philippines weaves are moving from traditional to global fashion.

In Mindanao, textiles are more than fabric—they are living stories. Each thread carries centuries of culture, ritual, and identity. Once reserved for sacred ceremonies, these weaves are now stepping confidently into modern wardrobes, capturing both local pride and global attention.

Back in 2017, more than 25 Miss Universe delegates graced the Mindanao Tapestry fashion show at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City, all wearing creations by designer Renee Salud. It was the same year Experience Travel and Living featured Mindanao’s local textiles, celebrating the artistry and spirit woven into every thread. Since then, the story of these fabrics has continued to unfold—carried forward by a new generation of designers who see tradition not as a relic, but as a living source of inspiration.

In the quiet villages of South Cotabato, the T’nalak remains sacred to the T’boli people. Patterned from dream-inspired visions, it has found modern expression through designers like Mark Suralta Pabon, who transforms the abaca weave into asymmetrical dresses and tailored blazers. His works, featured in Vogue Philippines and recognized at the Habi Kadayawan 2019 awards, blend heritage with forward-thinking design.

In every T’nalak, Inaul, and Yakan weave lies the rhythm of a people who dream, create, and endure.

The Yakan of Zamboanga bring geometric brilliance to the modern runway. Once woven as communal wraps, their patterns now appear on kaftans and jackets showcased at Manila FAME through collaborations with designers such as Toping Zamora. Meanwhile, the Maguindanaon Inaul, known for its rich hues, continues to inspire collections that honor Bangsamoro identity while embracing sustainability.

In June 2024, Mindanao textiles took another international leap through the KatHABI exhibit organized by the Philippine Textile Research Institute at the Philippine Center in New York City. Running from June 25 to 28, the event celebrated craftsmanship and pushed Filipino weaving further into global consciousness.

As Experience Travel and Living celebrates its 11th anniversary, this story looks back on one of the magazine’s most meaningful journeys—how a feature on Mindanao weaves became a continuing testament to creativity, resilience, and pride. These threads, once rooted in ritual, now weave new stories across the world—reminding us that heritage endures when it is passed on with heart.
