The Great Wheelbarrow Race

The Atherton Tablelands’ largest community event returns to the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds in 2025, with more than 250 exhibitors expected to display agricultural equipment and farming services at what is now one of Australia’s biggest field-day events.

It’s only taken a few years for The Great Wheelbarrow Race to become a highlight of the Far North Queensland calendar, with this charity event having raised more than $2.6 million since 2007. The route covers 140km of the Wheelbarrow Way between Mareeba and Chillagoe – named as a tribute to the miners who once pushed their possessions between villages in wheelbarrows – with teams now completing the course in three fun-filled days. greatwheelbarrowrace.com.au

EO: How did you end up living in the Daintree Rainforest? TS: In 2019 my husband Bruno and I packed up our Sydney house and spent a year doing the Big Lap of Australia in a caravan with our two kids. We made it back to Sydney just in time for COVID and started to wonder if there was something more that we wanted from our life. In June 2021 we made a trip back to the Daintree to take a look at what is now our home and our livelihood – Daintree Siesta accommodation and campground in the heart of the oldest continuous rainforest in the world.

EO: What is forest therapy? TS: Forest therapy is a practice that supports health, wellness and happiness through guided immersion walks in forests. It’s inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku or ‘forest bathing’. I recently completed certification by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, and have started leading guided walks through our beautiful rainforest here at Daintree Siesta. EO: Where’s a good place to swim in the Daintree? TS: You can’t swim from the beach here but that doesn’t mean there’s nowhere to cool off on a hot day! We love the freshwater swimming hole at Mason’s Café in Cape Tribulation. When we have a free half-day, a snorkelling trip to the reef with Ocean Safari is amazing. EO: What’s it like here in the wet season? TS: Absolutely gorgeous. The forest surroundings are so green and vibrant. I never knew there were so many shades of green before moving to Tropical North Queensland. EO: What do you do with time off? TS: I head down to Port Douglas to

browse the books and have a chai at Wait-a-While bookstore and café on Macrossan Street, or stop in for a hot chocolate at the Australian Chocolate Farm at Shannonvale. I also love to explore our local area and activities – I recently took part in an Indigenous painting workshop with Binna at Janbal Gallery in Mossman. EO: What are your must-dos for a day trip to the Daintree? TS: The Daintree Rainforest has been here for millions of years so a day isn’t enough for a full experience! I’d suggest any visit incorporates slow travel for a few days so that you can see what the forest has to show you, and then feel refreshed on your return to the busyness of regular life EO: Where do you get your coffee? TS: The wattleseed affogato at the Daintree Ice Cream Company hits the spot. I also enjoy a Davidson plum

EO: Favourite spot for a quick dinner? TS: The Pizza Shop in Port Douglas. It serves authentic Italian pizzas like we used to get in Sydney’s Inner West. EO: Where’s the best place to spot a cassowary? TS: I usually glimpse them as I’m driving along before they disappear back into the forest. Occasionally we have a cassowary saunter through our campground. Our guests also often spot spectacled flying foxes and musky rat-kangaroos on site. .

EO: What is something people might not expect about Fitzroy Island? TS: The range of habitats, vegetation types and fauna diversity makes it a great place to visit. The walk to the summit lookout is a personal favourite – it’s very peaceful and the views are fantastic. The island and reef comprise part of the traditional homeland of the Gurabana Gunggandji people who have used the island for thousands of years. EO: How do you like to spend your spare time on dry land? TS: Holidays for me are built around walking trips. I love slowing the pace of life. I am particularly fond of the Himalayas but closer to home, it’s difficult to go past the network of Arrow walking trails on Mount Whitfield.

EO: Where’s your favourite place on the GBR to snorkel? TS: My familiarity with the Great Barrier Reef is limited to the region adjacent to my home in Cairns. It’s such a massive ecosystem so this is a major limitation! However, Flynn Reef and Milln Reef are up there, and they are easy to get to. EO: Can you share some local hospitality spots? TS: For breakfast, I love eggs benedict at Ozmosis in Edge Hill in Cairns. For lunch, there’s a deli called Oliveri’s on Edith Street in Innisfail that I always visit if I’m down that way. The best coffee I’ve found is at Blackbird Laneway cafe in Oceana Walk Arcade in the middle of Cairns. And you can’t beat Salt House on the waterfront at Marina Point for a sundowner. EO: What are your three must-dos on a trip to FNQ? TS: Reef, rainforest and waterfalls. Put those on your list and you’ll be outside enjoying the best of our region. EO: What does the RRF do? TS: We maintain a network of coral ‘nurseries’ at Fitzroy Island, Moore Reef and Hastings Reef off Cairns. We cut fragments from mature coral colonies and grow them into spawning stock in our midwater nurseries, where they grow about five times faster than they do on the reef. Every year, our nurseries add a billion baby corals to the Great Barrier Reef that would not otherwise be added.

But this destination, with two famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics of Queensland – on many a travel to-do list, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking mild or wild adventures that challenge the body and feed the soul.

There’s something for every travel whim, from mountain-biking trails through centuries-old rainforests to snorkelling above vibrant coral reefs abundant with colourful marine creatures and hiking mountain trails to float in secluded waterfalls. The region crowning Queensland promises once-in-a-lifetime experiences for visitors eager to get active in some of Mother Nature’s most wondrous work.

Swim in the freshest water Freshwater swimming is a year-round fave with Far North Queenslanders. They drift to waterfalls, lakes and rivers after work and on weekends to cool down in clear water free of the biting critters that occupy the coastline. Crystal Cascades near Cairns and the safe sections of the Babinda Boulders feature in the guidebooks, while the Alligators Nest on the edge of Tully and the Davies Creek Falls near Mareeba are far from the tourist trail. The Atherton Tablelands’ volcanic lakes are family-friendly spots, with Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham – in the rolling hills between Yungaburra and Malanda – busier than the town swimming pool on wet-season weekends when the mercury and humidity climb.

Sir David Attenborough says Tropical North Queensland’s immense green carpet is “quite unlike any other rainforest in the world”, but you need not be a world-famous naturalist to explore a pristine wilderness that’s home to more varieties of flora and fauna than can be counted. Stroll the elevated walkways above Wooroonooran National Park at Mamu Tropical Skywalk in the heart of the Misty Mountains or wander the Marrdja Boardwalk at Mossman Gorge to become immersed in landscapes that feel straight out of Jurassic Park.

There are easy walks around Mission Beach – we like Lacey Creek and the Licuala day-use areas on hot days because we can swim – and the Clump Mountain hike is more adventurous, but the views of the Barnard and Family Islands are worth the effort. We also take family and friends to Babinda Kayaking for a leisurely float down the creek, and we pack lunch to pause on the sandbars for a swim.”

Race through Tully Gorge on a white-water rafting adventure, float the Mossman River on a relaxed river drift experience, or complete the magical trek to Josephine Falls where a natural waterslide awaits at the trail’s end.

Partake in pedal power Tropical North Queensland is a mecca for mountain bikers, with the Cairns region credited with more than 700km of easily accessible tracks stretching from five unique MTB hubs. Start with the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park – where those keen on highadrenaline activities can fly through the rainforest on trails built for world-class events – or head to Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park for circuits boasting epic climbs and flowing descents. The Twin Bridges Track winds beside creeks and ancient trees, the Rail Trail between Atherton to Tolga is most spectacular after sunrise, and the Cardwell Range Track covers 19km through thick jungle with beautiful views the reward for a challenging ride.

Mt Bartle Frere is Queensland’s highest peak, with the 1622m summit home to a challenging 15km round-trip tramp best done over two days.

Combine a hike with a freshwater swim at Behana Gorge and follow the creek-side footpath to Clamshell Falls to refresh in the chilled water before finishing the 6.6km round-trip promenade.

The self-guided walk along Mossman Gorge’s paved paths and elevated boardwalks is effortless, with Baral Marrjanga the easiest option covering 270m from the bus stop to the Mossman River.

The Rainforest Circuit from Rex Creek Bridge is an extended Mossman Gorge option and the 2.4km track winds through green that feels like a forgotten wilderness.

The 1km round-trip amble to the Barron River Falls Lookout is popular after heavy rains when the vantage point frames the wild torrent rumbling over the rocks.

airns, Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Kuranda might get all the glory but there are dozens of tempting towns between Cooktown and the Cardwell Range that entice travellers ready to experience another side of Tropical North Queensland. Sleepy Ravenshoe sits high in the Atherton Tablelands and is home to Queensland’s highest hotel – there’s no better way to spend a humid afternoon than lingering at the Ravenshoe Hotel with a cool drink – while locals and visitors alike are drawn to neighbouring Herberton to step back in time at Historic Village Herberton.

El Arish – a blink-and-you-miss-it village between Innisfail and Tully – was established as a settlement for soldiers returning from the Great War and now boasts a modest but thoughtfully curated museum in the old railway station and an impressive Rising Sun monument unveiled in 2020 to celebrate the town’s centenary. Babinda serves as the gateway to the Babinda Boulders and Josephine Falls, but those making the journey south along the Bruce Highway from Cairns should stop into the village to try the cream buns at Babinda Bakery and watch a cane train rattle across the main street during The Crush. Yungaburra The Atherton Tablelands settlement is one of Tropical North Queensland’s prettiest precincts with rows of oldfashioned buildings now home to boutiques and bookstores, an elegant historic hotel, and a vast village green that hosts one of the region’s best community markets on the fourth Saturday of the month between January and November. Bibliophiles should plan a visit to Booklark Secondhand Books and Spencer & Murphy Booksellers. There’s the chance to spot a platypus in the wild at Peterson Creek on the edge of town, and those keen on a refreshing dip can make the nine-minute drive to Lake Eacham for a swim in this longextinct crater’s sapphire-blue water. Lake Tinaroo sits on the town’s northern edge and the vast reservoir – created when the Barron River was dammed to provide water for the region’s farmers to irrigate crops – is a favourite with local families who spend weekends and holidays swimming, boating, camping and hiking at a spot that always sees the Far North’s best sunsets. 12 — Experienceoz.com.au

The moving Afghanistan Avenue of Honour also rests beside Lake Tinaroo. The serene site, which was the vision of locals Susan and Gordon Chuck after their son Benjamin was killed in 2010 while deployed with the Australian Army, now memorialises the Australian soldiers and military dogs lost during the long war. Atherton real estate agent Zach Reid, father of two energetic children under three, says Yungaburra and its jewel-like lakes are the preferred place for family and friends from around the Tablelands to gather. “We love Lake Tinaroo because the foreshore offers beautiful parks with walking tracks, playgrounds, barbecues and swimming set amongst the beautiful hills and state forest,” the life-long Tablelander says. “We also love the volcanic lakes – both Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine – and the waterfalls close to Yungaburra because each one has wonderful walking tracks through the old-growth rainforests and crystal-clear water, which is ideal for everyone in the family to swim. “And the best thing about Barrine is the teahouse for coffee and scones.”

Chillagoe, nestled in the rugged ochre outback of Tropical North Queensland, is a hidden gem – ideal for adventurous travellers looking for an exciting road trip to a destination away from the tourist trail. This former mining town boasts dramatic limestone caves, ancient rock formations and a rich cultural history. Visitors are invited to explore the spectacular Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, where guided tours descend deep into limestone caverns filled with stalactites, stalagmites and Indigenous rock art. The town’s unique blend of natural beauty and history is also showcased at the Chillagoe Smelters. For a taste of Chillagoe’s quirky charm, visit the local museum where artefacts from the destination’s industrial era are on display, and indulge in some of Australia’s best stargazing at a location where the sky is not washed out by light pollution. The top thing to do in Cooktown is to visit Grassy Hill Lookout for a panoramic pictureperfect view across the historic town to the Coral Sea and Endeavour River.
