ITINERARY

Our itinerary bar gives a snapshot of your holiday. For hotel-to-hotel holidays we show where you visit or stay each night, giving the daily cycling distance. For centre-based holidays, we have highlighted a suggested itinerary from the optional routes that are available. Comprehensive day by day itineraries and options are given in the trip pages on our website.

ROUTE MAPS

Our maps show where you stay overnight and give an overview of the route/places you visit. The inset map puts the region into context.

What’s challenging for one person can be leisurely for someone else, but our activity ratings can offer a practical guide as to what to expect. We consider factors such as gradients of ascents and descents, distance, as well as terrain, route conditions, and location. For our mountain biking trips, previous experience is essential as they involve some technical off-road riding.

Gentle routes, often flat but with the occasional short climb. On average, you should expect to be cycling for 20-60km each day depending on the elevation and terrain. A great choice for first-timers, families, or those wanting a relaxed active break.

1+ PLUS TRIPS

Expect more undulations on these trips. The more varied terrain will appeal to a more active rider. You can expect to be climbing up to 660m in a day, over a distance of 20-90km. No special technical skills are required but must be good health and reasonably fit. We recommend you be a regular, confident cyclist to enjoy this level. Cycling tends to be on longer, more challenging routes up to 100km. Routes will also be hilly, some with longer climbs. Expect elevations between 400-800m. Riders are required to have a good level physical fitness.

DUAL LEVELS

Plus trips have small sections of the route that are more challenging than the overall grading. Dual

Our challenging trips require strong fitness and cycling confidence. Expect longer distances, steeper climbs and descents — ideal for experienced riders. Routes may reach up to 120km with 1000m elevation gain in a day. E-Bikes are generally not suitable for Level 4 holidays.

Car hire

For holidays where car hire is not included in the standard package we can, of course, arrange car hire for you. Please contact us for details.

Accommodation

All accommodation we use has been inspected and classified by the authorities of the relevant countries. As there is no direct British equivalent of many classifications, the broad expression ‘hotels’ refers to all the different types of accommodation we use, from friendly family-run B&B and country inns to luxury ★★★★★ hotels (where ★ is the country’s official hotel rating).

Headwater’s hotel ratings are provided to give you guidance on the relative standard of the hotel you will be staying in. In most occasions this will match the official star rating of the hotel, however, if we feel it necessary Headwater will adapt a rating to what we believe is fair. These ratings are reviewed regularly to ensure their accuracy and relevance.

PLEASE NOTE:

• Single rooms (even if you’ve paid a supplement) sometimes just offer privacy, and are sometimes of a lower standard than doubles or twins.

• In several countries, when requesting a room with twin beds, a double bed frame with two single mattresses and separate bedding is the norm.

• In Europe when requesting a room for three people either a double or twin room with an extra bed is often provided, which may be cramped.

• Some facilities, such as swimming pools, may not be available for early and late season holidays. This is at the hotel’s discretion and subject to last minute change and, as such, it is not always possible to make you aware prior to travel.

• The available accommodation may not always be the one included online, especially during busy periods or for late bookings. We will endeavour where possible to find a hotel of a similar standard, facilities and location. Any differences will be highlighted at the time. Where this is a common occurrence we prefer not to list any individual hotels to avoid disappointment.

Please see our website (using the link on the individual trip pages) for full details of the accommodation on each trip.

Extra nights

In order to create your perfect holiday, we can easily arrange any city breaks or extra nights’ accommodation at the start and end of your holiday, and occasionally in the middle of the trip. Associated travel/transfers are an additional cost. Your travel consultant will be happy to assist with this. Please ask at the time of booking.

Meal plans

Details are clearly stated in the ‘What’s included’ box on the individual holiday pages on our website.

Children

We can provide advice on suitable trips for children aged between 3-17 years. Please contact us for details and prices.

Single and solo supplements

For individuals travelling, hotels often charge a Single Supplement for the use of the room by one person. In addition, our prices are based on 2 people sharing any land and baggage transfers costs between them. As such, if applicable, we may also charge a Solo Supplement to cover the full cost of this service.

Bike hire

Should you require an upgrade to an e-bike or to extend your bike hire for any extra nights booked in your holiday region (either before, after or in the middle of your holiday) then an additional charge will apply, please ask your sales consultant at the time of booking. There is a legal minimum age of 14 years to hire an e-bike across much of Europe, however, this is ultimately at the discretion of our supplier partners and as such you may be required to sign a waiver provided to you by Headwater covering their usage by children aged between 14-18 years.

TRAVEL TO EUROPE IS CHANGING. ARE YOU READY?

The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will gradually roll out from 12 Oct 25 for all non-EU citizens, meaning this change will affect all UK Passport holders. On your first arrival at a European airport (or at embarkation at Dover, Eurotunnel and St Pancras) after its introduction you will be required to register biometric information, such as photograph and fingerprint. The collection of which is likely to result in delays, certainly initially, and we advise you to allow extra time to clear passport control.

This information will be stored for 3 years and if you enter the Schengen area again you will only need to provide a fingerprint or photo, when you enter and exit. For more information, please visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en

Then, by late-2026 the European Union aims to introduce the ETIAS, essentially an electronic visa, which all British nationals will need to purchase directly. It will be valid for 3 years or until the date of passport expiry (whichever comes first). For more information, please visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias

Helmets

In several countries cycling helmets are a legal requirement, see individual trip pages for details. We strongly recommended the wearing of a helmet for all cycling activities and not doing so is at your own risk. Not wearing a helmet may also affect the validity of your insurance, plus if helmets are mandatory in the country you are in, you may not be allowed to take part in any cycling element, which may mean that you are not able to continue with that part of your holiday and Headwater will not be responsible for any costs you incur as a result.

For cycle activities you will need to bring your own cycle helmet(s). We recognise this may be an inconvenience to some, but Headwater Holidays will not facilitate the rental of cycle helmets for strict health and safety reasons, as we cannot guarantee their integrity from one rental to the next . If you do rent a helmet for your holiday independently, Headwater Holidays accepts no responsibility or liability in respect of that rental and the agreement for the helmet rental shall be between you and the third party supplier.

Holiday documentation

Important holiday documentation will be provided by email or in the My Headwater app during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Headwater immediately.

Local agents

Local hoteliers or local agents act as our representatives in our destinations. Their contact details will be provided before you travel.

Assistance

Should you need us during your holiday we are just a phone call away, 24 hours a day. Prior to travel you will be provided with a number for our local agent, if applicable, and our 24hrs emergency phone number.

Further detailed holiday information can be found on our website.

SUSTAINABILITY

We’re proud to be certified B Corp, proving our adventures protect what matters most – people and planet. Our Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan is all about nature-positive travel to keep wild places thriving and local communities flourishing.

SUPPORTING WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF

For the second year running, we are partnering with World Bicycle Relief to provide fifty more Buffalo bikes. In rural communities, where distance can mean missing out on healthcare, education, or work, a tough, reliable bicycle can be truly life-changing.

CARBON MEASUREMENT

We like to measure what matters. Since first launching the initiative in 2020, we've been tracking every gram of CO₂e per person, per trip — and sharing this information openly so we can cut it smartly. Meaning you can travel with a clearer conscience.

VOLUNTEER DAYS

REWILDING OUR NATURAL HABITATS

Since 2021 we have partnered with Rewilding Apennines with the goal to rewild 100 sqm of the Italian Apennines per passenger over five years. Landscapes like these are close to our hearts as Italy remains one of our most popular destinations for active and outdoor holidays.

REDUCING OUR IMPACT

From solar-powered stays and recycling initiatives to reforestation projects, we partner with businesses that act responsibly. By supporting communities, adopting sustainable practices, and reducing plastics, we’re shrinking our footprint and helping economies thrive.

Hands dirty, hearts full — this year our teams have once again rolled up their sleeves to clear pollution, restore habitats, and provide woodland maintenance by planting trees via our volunteer days. Our local partnerships make a lasting change.

WE ARE CERTIFIED B CORP

As part of Exodus Travels, we’re proud to have earned our B Corp status. This global stamp of approval recognises we are a purpose-driven company, dedicated to becoming ‘even better’ in terms of our social and environmental impact, using travel as a force for good.
