DETOUR ITALY

SEE A DIFFERENT SIDE OF TUSCANY

Tuscany may be best known for vineyard valleys and postcard-perfect hills, but travelers are increasingly seeking out its quieter corners. In the rugged Garfagnana region, near-empty trails lead to peaks like Monte Prado (2054m) and the soaring natural arch of Monte Forato. With a rustic agriturismo and hearty mountain fare to fuel the journey, isn’t it time you discovered Tuscany’s wilder, steeper side?

ZEST IS BEST IN AMALFI

Limoncello – sunshine in a glass – is making a spirited comeback, with sales worldwide increasing dramatically. On our Amalfi Coast tours, you can sample it in rustic tavernas or buy a bottle from family-run liquorificios where age-old recipes are guarded like heirlooms. It’s the perfect post-hike refresher: zesty, cooling, and unmistakably Italian.

NEWS & VIEWS

Primate Survival Project | Vietnam

Vietnam’s forests shelter some of the world’s rarest primates, including the Cao vit gibbon, the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, and the Cat Ba langur. In partnership with Fauna & Flora, we’re supporting conservation initiatives in Vietnam that train community rangers, restore native forests, engage in environmental education and use acoustic monitoring and thermal drones to track ape populations. By empowering communities and safeguarding endangered wildlife, this pioneering project offers hope not just for Vietnam’s primates but for a future where conservation and livelihoods go hand in hand.

OREN BLINDELL

EXODUS SALES TEAM LEADER

Ever been to Mars? Me neither, but this is probably the closest I’ll get. The landscapes in Cappadocia are absolutely wild – unlike anywhere I’ve been before. One of my favorite moments was getting up early to watch the hot air balloons take off at sunrise.

I opted to sit in the hills and watch – and honestly, it was spectacular. The walks are level 3, so nothing too strenuous, which makes it a great trip for a first walking vacation. All meals are included, usually three courses, adding up to incredible value for money.

EXPERT TIP: Phones do the job, but the light here is unreal – soft sunrises, golden rock formations, and balloon-filled skies are worth taking a proper camera and extra lens for.

exodustravels.com/trip/ttg

“Cappadocia truly surprised me. The varied walks left a lasting impression. It’s a place that offers far more than you expect.”

BREWING CHANGE IN SRI LANKA

After winning our 2024 Hall of Fame award, our long-standing expert guide, Ruwan Balasooriya, used his prize money to renovate a family-run tea shop near Polonnaruwa, a favorite pit stop among Exodus cyclists that had sadly fallen into disrepair. Now fully restored, Ruwan’s generous act is a heartfelt reminder that Sri Lankan community spirit knows no bounds.

BEACH BREAKS

Adventures are great. Adventures plus a beach break? Even better. After Kenya’s wildlife, unwind on Zanzibar’s shore. Or follow Amalfi’s trails with sea, and limoncello in Sorrento. Whether it’s post-trip bliss or pre-adventure unwinding, soft sands and sea breeze are the perfect punctuation to reflect on the wild, the wonderful – and what’s next.

CITY BREAKS

On our extended city breaks, you can swap hiking poles for pastries and art galleries. Weave through Tokyo’s neon Yokocho alleys after our Ancient and Modern Japan, or admire Florence post Walking in Tuscany. Our city stays aren’t just bonus days –they’re bold finales, giving you one more reason not to head home.

NATURE

Experience nature at its wildest – raw, remote, and full of wonder. After Cycling the Cape & Winelands in South Africa, trade your saddle for a safari. Or take your wildlife adventure on land post snorkeling in the Galapagos with a jungle lodge stay in Ecuador’s rainforest. Because sometimes, nature deserves an encore.

WELLNESS

Our Wellness Extensions offer time to recharge, reset and savor the stillness. After tracking big cats in Kruger why not swap the bush for a luxurious spa in Mauritius? Or follow your Primates & Dragons of Indonesia trip with a wellness retreat in Bali. Every great adventure deserves a moment of calm to match the thrill.

ADD-ON TOURS

Unlike our beach breaks, wellness retreats or city stays, our add-on tours pair you with an expert guide for even more in-depth exploring. Once you’ve trekked Ladakh’s peaks, you could explore India’s Golden Triangle. Or, cap off Vietnam with a trip to Angkor Wat. You’ve hit your stride – so why not keep going?

ASIA IN FOCUS

MEKONG RIVER | VIETNAM

Asia isn’t just somewhere that wows you with unmissable sights – it’s a continent that greets you with a garland of marigolds, a bowl of steaming pho after a long day’s ride, and a slice of sweet tropical fruit presented as you arrive deep in the Bornean rainforest. It’s these small acts of kindness and hospitality that linger long after the adventure is over – and we’re the ones who’ll guide you to every unforgettable moment.

From Cambodia to Bhutan, every day in Asia brings a quiet thrill. Picture yourself riding Cambodia’s red-dust roads at sunrise towards Angkor’s ancient spires, gliding past ox carts and curious children waving from stilted houses, wondering how you’ll ever go back to your usual commute. In Japan, imagine soaking in steaming onsens overlooking snow-dusted pines before sharing stories over sake in a cosy ryokan. In Borneo, it’s the hush that falls when an orangutan appears, followed by a collective grin that says we’ll be telling this story for years. While in Bhutan, you could stand shoulder to shoulder with your group watching swirling dancers in vivid masks, feeling part of something far bigger than any guidebook could ever capture.

Our expert local guides don’t just show you the way – they open doors, share ancient customs and traditions, and create connections that turn an ordinary trip into something far more meaningful. Because when you travel with us, you don’t just see Asia – you feel part of it.

Nizam was such a lovely guide – always looking for things to show us and little extras to do, like wild swimming in Mulu or finding pink dolphins in Bako.”

MAPPING ASIA

Let us map out your adventure in Asia. Magazine in one hand, curiosity in the other – here’s how to chart a course for the extraordinary.

1

EAGLE-EYED ON THE SILK ROAD | CENTRAL ASIA

Five countries. Three weeks. One epic journey through Central Asia. A real standout? Our travelers say it’s the optional excursion to Bokonbaev village, where expert falconers (many from generations of nomadic tradition) showcase golden eagles soaring above Issyk-Kul Lake, the lake that never freezes. This is a rare, front-row seat to a vanishing way of life and years of falconry culture.

2

MEET THE FAMILY IN AMRITSAR | INDIA

An absolute standout moment (out of many) on this immersive journey - visiting a local farm near Amritsar, meeting the family, learning how to make pakoras and being dressed head to toe in gorgeous, traditional attire. Add in a warrior performance, a rumbling tractor ride through the fields and a golden sunset – a perfect, extraordinary day and a rare glimpse of rural India.

Foothills of the Himalaya exodustravels.com/trip/aiq

One of the most special moments on our Tibet journey takes place in Tongren – a corner of China few associate with Tibet. We visit Wutun Monastery, heart of UNESCO-listed Regong art, then step into a family home to see an intricately detailed thangka painting in progress. It’s pigment, prayer and gold dust – and a glimpse into Tibetan life few ever see. Highlights of Tibet exodustravels.com/trip/acb

4

THE BEST SLEEP ON EVEREST | NEPAL

Led by mountain experts, we pause at viewpoints few others reach, steeped in Himalayan silence and folklore. Each night sleep in comfort at the best lodgings on the mountain. Mende’s Everest Summit Lodge is just one example of these standout stays, just off the main trail, away from crowds and surrounded by snow-dusted peaks. With 30 years’ experience here and a 4:1 staff ratio, you’re in expert hands trekking the Himalaya with us.

SOUTH KOREA

Hidden in the Gayasan Mountains in the heart of South Korea, a stay at Haeinsa Temple whisks you back in time to experience life as a monk. Here, amidst mountain forests and timeless rituals, you’ll get to truly slow down.

QUIET IN LITTLE KYOTO | JAPAN

Our best-selling Japan trip blends sights with surprises. Kanazawa, often called ‘little Kyoto’ for its traditional charm, features the elegant Kenrokuen Gardens and historic Samurai districts, where our local guides bring their stories to life. Later, visit lakeside Oishi Park, a favorite among our leaders for its views of Mt Fuji. This itinerary reveals what others often miss – Japan’s more serene side.

COMFORTS IN BORNEO | BORNEO

If you’re staying in a rainforest, it may as well be the best. The award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley sits within one of Asia’s last pristine lowland rainforests - a haven for rare creatures. Play “I spy” as your expert guide helps you spot orangutans swinging lazily through the canopy, pygmy elephants and birds so vibrant they could make a rainbow jealous.

CYCLE ANGKOR’S TEMPLE TRAILS | CAMBODIA

Angkor Wat draws crowds, but few see it like this. Over two leisurely days cycling with our expert guides, you’ll explore Angkor’s quieter corners from a saddle rather than a seat. Pedal shaded paths to jungle-cloaked Ta Prohm (the iconic “Tomb Raider” temple) and glide through paddy fields and sleepy villages to the intricately carved Banteay Srei temple.

Beyond THE GUIDEBOOK VIETNAM

KELLY REID

EXODUS PRODUCT MANAGER VIETNAM

For Kelly Reid, Exodus’s Vietnam Product Manager since 2018, crafting the perfect itinerary isn’t just about ticking boxes – it’s about balancing cultural depth, unforgettable experiences, and time to soak it all in. Kelly says, “The trick is to build itineraries that highlight all of it, without feeling rushed.”

She recalls boarding the overnight train to Hue on our Vietnam Adventure trip when her guide, Ngoc, casually took dinner orders on the platform. “Fifteen minutes before departure, a full Vietnamese feast was delivered to our carriage – spring rolls, grilled pork, veggie noodles, dipping sauces, the works,” she says. It’s the sort of detail our leaders quietly perfect, time and time again.

Whether it’s arranging dinner on a train, translating jokes at a homestay, or organizing an impromptu tea ceremony in Hue, “they’re the reason so many of our travelers come home raving – it’s not just about the places, but the incredible people. I’m very proud of our guides.”

On day three of our Hidden Vietnam trip, we take travelers to Ta Phin, a remote hill village, home to the Black Hmong and Red Dao communities. A night in a traditional stilt house offers an authentic glimpse into local life. Think forest-foraged meals, shared stories, and, if you’re lucky, the chance to try a traditional Red Dao herbal bath-in-a-barrel. “It’s a centuries-old ritual using handpicked herbs,” says Kelly. “Not something we schedule –but our hosts sometimes offer it, and it’s a perfect example of unscripted magic Vietnam has up its sleeve.”

Another standout adventure is our new Trekking in Northern Vietnam trip. “It’s immersive in every way,” she says. Travelers spend several days hiking through rice terraces and hill communities in Lào Cai and Hoàng Su Phì. Highlights include visiting Lung Phinh market, where locals gather to trade goods and gossip, and joining a Red Dao fire dancing ceremony, a spiritual spectacle rarely seen by outsiders. Travelers harvest tea with farmers, learn how corn wine is made, and stop at a Dao silversmith’s home workshop, where jewellery is hammered out by hand. “You’re not just seeing Vietnam – you’re living it, one story at a time.”

Of course, it’s not all villages and misty mountains. Our Cycle Vietnam trip reveals a different side of the country, with a two-night stay at Whale Island Resort, a laid-back retreat fringed by coral reefs. Once a favorite of Jacques Cousteau, it’s a peaceful pause from the saddle – and, as Kelly says, “a real highlight – no other tour operators I know go there, which makes it feel extra special.”

And then there’s the food. “Vietnamese cuisine is cultural currency,” Kelly says. “From Hanoi’s egg coffee to Hoi An’s community-run

cooking classes, food is a common thread that ties everyone together – it’s their language of love.”

What sets Exodus apart? “It’s the detail, and our guides’ unrelenting passion for their country. The local stories, the moments that take you by surprise – that’s what travelers remember.”

Considering Vietnam? Kelly’s advice is clear: “Just go. You’ll feel welcome, amazed, and always full.”

SPOTLIGHT ON

India “

BIJU KUMAR

EXODUS LEADER

SOUTH INDIA

Some people are born to lead. Biju Badri Kumar, who swapped call-centre headsets for the call of Kerala’s backwaters in 2005, is one of them. “You’d be better as a guide,” a friend told him – and we’re glad he listened. Because for Exodus travelers, Biju isn’t merely a guide; he’s a great storyteller, friend and, as customer Helen Rynne puts it, “a terrific ambassador for the state of Kerala.”

When you first meet him, palms folded in a warm Namaste, you know you are in the best possible hands – hands that, despite the early starts and long days, still rise before dawn to unroll his yoga mat for quiet practice.

From your first step onto the palm-fringed shores of Kochi, Biju sets the tone. His stories animate each corner, covering Vasco da Gama’s resting place, the tiled grandeur of St Francis Church, and the spice-scented lanes of Mattancherry.

Driving into Munnar on Day 3, Biju shares the history behind this beautiful hill station on the Western Ghats. Your afternoon is spent at the Srishti Trust where you’ll meet artisans crafting dyed fabrics and handmade paper, projects

that bring opportunity to the children of tea pickers. Founded to support families who’ve faced generations of hardship, Srishti trains young people with disabilities in sustainable trades.

For Biju, it’s more than just another stop on the itinerary. “This place shows the heart of the community,” he explains. He takes time to introduce you to the people behind each craft, so you understand not just what they make, but why it matters.

He also has a knack for making long journeys fly by, sharing tales of local deities, the logic of Indian politics, and the secrets behind Keralan cooking. As Helen Rynne put it, “Normally, time spent on the bus would be unwelcome, but Biju made it something to look forward to.”

Another Exodus traveler, Vivienne Morris, painted a vivid picture of Biju’s leadership style: no detail escapes his attention. When a kitchen was short-staffed on her trip, he rolled up his sleeves to help prepare lunch – another day, another chance to show that hospitality is a way of life in India. “He was exceptional… willing to help out in any way.”

In Madurai on Day 5, you experience the Sri Meenakshi Temple’s night ceremony. Biju quietly explains the ritual: how the idol of Shiva

The Sri Meenakshi Temple’s night ceremony… is not a colorful festival, but a spiritual experience. You don’t watch it like a performance – you feel it.”

is ceremoniously carried to join Parvati for the night, symbolising divine union and the closing of the day’s worship. He says, “It’s not a colorful festival, but a spiritual experience. You don’t watch it like a performance – you feel it, even if you don’t understand every word.” And when the drums and conch shells echo through the darkened halls, you understand exactly what he means.

Later, drifting through the Kerala backwaters on a traditional houseboat, you pass by local women washing clothes, fishermen casting nets, and coconut palms mirrored in still canals, a serene scene unchanged for centuries – and it’s made all the more memorable by the way Biju brings it to life.

So there you have it. When you travel with Biju, you realise the best guides don’t just show you a place – they help you feel part of it from start to finish.

If you’d like to experience a different side of South India with Biju, he leads select departures of Kerala & the Tropical South. exodustravels.com/ait

While much of the world winds down for December, Bhutan comes alive with a special magic.

The Kingdom of festival Magic

This is the time of the Trongsa Tshechu (Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred festival) held in the magnificent Trongsa Dzong. The dramatic Himalayas are the backdrop as monks in vivid silk robes swirl through sacred masked dances. DEB PROTHEROE

EXODUS TRAVELER

COSTA RICA

Deb’s first trip to Costa Rica with Exodus was anything but ordinary. Between zip-lining over rainforests, white water rafting, and taking dips in volcanic rivers, she fell for a country that values conservation as much as adventure.

The boat trip around Tortuguero...

“...was like something out of a nature documentary. One highlight was watching a family of spider monkeys swinging across the river. They’d climb, bounce for momentum, and fling themselves across the water. It felt like time paused, just long enough for me to appreciate how extraordinary it all was.”

White water ra ing in Costa Rica...

“...was one of those experiences where you start off a bit nervous but end up laughing the whole way through. I’ll admit, I was apprehensive, but once we got going, it was brilliant. The team really bonded – we were all shouting ‘1-2-1’ in unison, working together to navigate the rapids. If you ever do it, don’t worry – you’ll have a beer waiting for you when you finish!”

As I walked along the Hanging Bridges...

“... the rainforest seemed to hum – with the sound of birds, insects, and the occasional haunting cry of a howler monkey, reminding you whose turf you were on.“

Ziplining in Costa Rica was hands down one of the most exhilarating moments of the trip.”

“Nothing quite prepares you for soaring 650 feet above the jungle canopy, reaching speeds of 50 mph. You start with a practice line a mere three feet off the ground, then they turn you loose on one that’s 650 feet high. I was shaking like a leaf, but the view was worth it! It was surreal – flying through the mist, feeling like you were part of the wild.”

Traveling with a group is perfect for me...

“...I can travel to all corners of the world knowing that I’m safe and I’ll meet up with like-minded people and I always come away with friends for life—people just bond so well on these tours. I’ve only ever traveled on group tours with Exodus and everything has always run like clockwork, the guides look after you from the minute you land and their passion for their country, their knowledge and desire to help is always outstanding. You can tell they genuinely care about protecting the places they share with you. I’ll always continue to use Exodus for my future group travels.”

& SOUTHERN SKIES: A Salkantay Trek to Remember Sacred trails

ForExodus customer, Beatrice Van Den Heuvel, the Salkantay Trek was more than just a chance to visit a world-famous site – it was an opportunity to share a meaningful adventure with her dad.

From camping under starlit skies to celebrating her birthday at the Sun Temple, their trip was filled with moments that deepened their bond. “When my dad retired, the stars seemed to align for us to go on a big trip.” Reflecting on the physical aspect of the trek, Beatrice said, “ I’m a personal trainer, so exercise is part of my daily routine.” She added, “We found the hike reasonably easy, but I was really proud of my dad—he’s 71 and was always at the front of the pack, setting the pace.”

“I was a bit apprehensive about the altitude, but arriving a day early in Cuzco and sipping coca tea each morning helped—plus, there was a running joke that everyone was powered by Haribo.”

Beatrice had nothing but praise for their expert local guide, Holger. “I couldn’t fault him – he was a real asset to this trip. His knowledge

of everything – from geography and economics to endemic plants and Peruvian history – was incredible. Holger also avoided tourist trap restaurants and took us to places that supported local communities. One had 280 varieties of potatoes and backed a local organic chocolate company. It was hidden up some stairs—we’d have walked right past it without him.”

The trip couldn’t have been better timed, as they arrived in Cuzco just as the Inti Raymi Festival was getting underway. “Exodus were kind enough to switch the itinerary around, so we got to see the first ceremony at the Sun Temple on my birthday. It was all managed very well. They arranged the tickets for us, minibus transfers and Holger helped us grab food for a picnic. The whole day was extraordinary.”

Camping proved to be another highlight of their journey. “Dad and I used to camp a lot. I remember those thin, uncomfortable mattresses, so I was surprised at how nice Exodus’ setup was.” Trading torchlight for starlight, Beatrice stepped outside the tent into a moment of pure magic. “We were in the middle of nowhere under this amazing sky.

The only sound you could hear was small avalanches of snow falling in the distance. It was the first time I had camped in the Southern Hemisphere, so seeing the Southern Cross was pretty special.”

It was a night to remember—and the next day delivered a view to match. “Walking through the Sun Gate and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time was breathtaking. As my dad said, it gave us a real sense of arrival. It felt like a pilgrimage. When we got there, we were hit with a wave of emotion. We just turned to each other, and dad said, ‘Well, it doesn’t get any better than this, does it?’”

Follow in Beatrice’s footsteps on the spectacular Salkantay Trek. From starlit camps to ancient citadels, this is Peru at its most breathtaking. View The Salkantay Trek at exodustravels.com/trip/tps

The Magic of the Market

Wherever you travel, the local market is often the quickest way to find the soul of a destination. Explore a local market with one of our guides and they’ll show you the community’s heart and soul. The objective is rarely about loading up on souvenirs. Instead, it’s witnessing daily life play out, meeting vendors and artisans, and tasting the freshest local produce. If you want to connect with a place, rather than just see it, here are some of our favorite markets from across the globe.

SOUKS OF FEZ MEDINA, MOROCCO

Best for living history

Step inside the ancient walls of Fez Medina to explore a maze-like multitude of souks, each specializing in a certain product. It’s one of the most evocative shopping experiences in Morocco: street vendors call out their wares, offering everything from glittering copper lanterns and handwoven rugs to argan oil and fragrant spices, while the fine art of bartering has been perfected here over 1,200 years of trade. Bargains can be found, but it’s the feeling of stepping back in time that truly makes these souks unmissable.

CHICHICASTENANGO MARKET, GUATEMALA

Best for experiencing Maya culture

Twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, the highland town of Chi-Chi, as the locals call it, bursts into life with one of the largest markets in Central America. Steeped in Maya tradition, it’s more than just a place of commerce; it’s a showcase of culture. People travel from all over the region to trade and see old friends, often dressed in traditional clothing. The market itself is a cornucopia of street food, local produce and artisanal souvenirs. But if you leave with just one item, make it one of the handwoven textiles, a fine example of Maya artistry.

Foodies will be in their element – think thick, crusty loaves of fresh bread, full-to-the-brim buckets of olives and giant cheese wheels. And, beyond the edible delights, the market is known as the go-to spot for buying linen… the picturesque setting of historic Forcalquier only adds to the romance of the experience.

Wild, Warm & Wonderfully UNEXPECTED

When friends ask what to do in Southern Africa, I skip the obvious. The real wild, warm and wonderfully unexpected stuff?

You won’t find it on a Top 5 list – unless it’s mine.

Living in Cape Town, I understand why the wildlife, beaches and Table Mountain steal the spotlight – they’re showstoppers, no doubt. But Southern Africa has a habit of surprising you. The really good moments will sneak up on you.

Like tracking lions on foot with Shangaan guides who read the bush better than I read my phone. Freewheeling through vine-striped valleys between tastings or crossing into a tiny kingdom with more culture than traffic lights.

In the Dolomites, every trail leads through striking peaks and powerful history. From Villabassa, there’s the path taken by SS hostages in 1945 to tranquil Lago di Braies, where locals risked everything to help them. Then it’s up to Monte Piana, with open-air WWI trenches overlooking the Tre Cime. The route crosses into Austria via the Kreuzberg Pass, through meadows, with a pause for Kaiserschmarrn on Strudelkopf. More than just BIKING IN THE BALTICS

From Tallinn’s storybook spires to Riga’s elegant facades and the baroque charm of Vilnius, the Baltic capitals know how to enchant. But for Diana Ballon, the real discovery began when she explored the region by bike. Initially drawn by the promise of flat terrain, the Canadian journalist soon realised the Baltics offer so much more than flat-out fun. With its rich history and resilient people, her journey became an immersive exploration of the region’s heart, culture, and soul.

When I first read about the Baltics’ underrated and less touristed capital cities, I was intrigued. What I didn’t know at the time were the spaces in between — the dense forests, dunes, meadows and lakes, the national parks, and the quietly undulating paths and secondary roads that make Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania a natural paradise and a cyclist’s dream.

The cooler, more temperate climate of Baltic summers and the region’s well-maintained, designated cycling paths makes it a great place to cycle. So instead of arriving red-faced and breathless at the top of a steep incline, you can cycle leisurely, perhaps stopping to watch a stork feeding its baby or to take a photo at one of the many manors, castles, and old wooden churches.

On Day 1 of our trip, my friend, Lisa Schmidt and I met the 14 other cyclists and our tour leader, Andrius Mažrimas in Tallinn. Although this was my fifth Exodus trip, these initial meetings are always a bit nerve-wracking. They’re like a loaded first date, because –regardless of the connection – you are still committed to spending many days together.

But as with all my cycling trips, I have never encountered a bad egg. Maybe it’s the choice of cycling that instantly binds a group as adventurers, both physically, and in a spirit of curiosity. We are all interested to learn more about local life and the history of a region, not to mention enjoying the outdoors, trying new foods, having conversations, and being comfortable with the unexpected.

Our guide, Andrius, proved to be informative with a sardonic edge: always warm, funny, historically brilliant, and a conscientious leader. He is also a proud Lithuanian, and – as someone whose family emigrated from Lithuania to Montreal in the late 1800s – I was thrilled to get his insider knowledge.

Now that I’ve been back for over a month, I’ve been reflecting on my journey across the Baltics. Here are our highlights…

“Cycling through Lahemaa National Park was like following an endless ribbon of paved road that only bikes could travel on”, recalls Lisa, and I couldn’t agree more. Located on the northern coast of Estonia, over 747-square kilometers, it is one of the largest national parks in Europe, with designated cycling trails running through forest, over boardwalks and past bogs, ancient homesteads and sleepy fishing hamlets.

We started our day at the beautifully restored Vihula Manor, and later passed two more manors in the park. At one point, we stopped to marvel at massive erratic boulders brought here by glaciers from southern Finland.

Around midday, we made a pit stop at Käsmu Maritime Museum, where – as well as admiring their many 18th century artifacts – we had the pleasure of enjoying big tureens of salmon soup followed by cheesecake – hosted by the owners of the museum on their glassed-in veranda overlooking the Baltic Sea.

Our guide, Andrius, proved to be informative with a sardonic edge: always warm, funny, historically brilliant and a conscientious leader.” “

Another highlight was the short ferry and cycle to the resort town of Nida, the starting point for our exploration of Lithuania’s Curonian Spit. The Spit, sometimes referred to as Lithuania’s Sahara, is a long, thin sand dune that runs next to the Baltic Sea. We continued on a paved path past wetlands and pine forest, with cormorants and herons, common cranes and other birds flying overhead.

At lunchtime, the group pedaled up to a fisherman’s homestead, where Andrius had pre-ordered smoked fish, tender mackerel, sea perch and sander, produced on platters from a food truck and supplemented with vegetables and fresh bread he had bought from a local market. Seated at picnic tables on site, one in the shape of a boat, with no one else in sight, it felt like a feast.

Another day, Andrius surprised us with a visit to the Hill of Crosses, a sacred site in northern Lithuania. On this knoll, thousands of crosses are densely packed on a hill, some almost toppling over each other – many with rosary beads and crucifixes looped overtop – placed there as memorials, as symbols of hope, or as symbols of gratitude or requests made to God.

Thousands of crosses were placed at the Hill of Crosses from the 18th century through to the 1970s, but many were bulldozed by the Soviets during their occupation. The ongoing restoration of these crosses shows the devotion and strong traditions of the Baltic people. As a writer, I was struck by how inadequate words felt to describe the setting.

“On our final afternoon, instead of touring the inside of Trakai Island Castle, we boarded a boat on Lake Galve, with Andrius clutching bags of ice, wine glasses and bottles of Prosecco to toast the end of our trip!”

We then had dinner at a cozy local restaurant in Vilnius that night. Some of us even danced a jig, to the accompaniment of an accordion, hand clapping and fiddle. It was a perfect send-off to a magical trip.

Where style matters PORTUGAL

Lisbon’s Manueline monuments, the Douro Valley vineyards, Porto’s old wine cellars, Madeira’s levadas... the pores of Portugal are adventure packed.

But when every corner turn or hill crest reveals a new wonder, how do you ever choose an adventure? Well, style matters. We offer trips for every type of adventurer and finding a travel style to suit you will maximize your enjoyment. Here are three options to consider.

CITY HOP

Roughly one-fifth the size of neighboring Spain, Portugal’s compact footprint makes it easy to jump from one great European city to the next. Cultural treasures are guaranteed – without long road journeys. Take our eight-day Highlights of Portugal trip. You start in Porto, discovering ancient streets and medieval lanes, before diving into a historic cellar for a port wine tasting. Move to the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley for lunch and wine in an 18th-century estate, before touring the student city of Coimbra, home to the second-oldest university in Europe. Next is the surfing idyll of Nazaré and the fortified village of Óbidos. Finally, it’s to Lisbon, where you discover one of Europe’s great capitals, visiting landmarks and, if you’d like, enjoying traditional fado folk music. Yes, Portugal may be relatively small, but its city-hopping adventures are big. Best for City Hopping: Highlights of Portugal, 8 days exodustravels.com/trip/adp

There are many glorious hiking spots in Portugal, arguably none more so than the subtropical island of Madeira. It’s a land of geological drama, shaped by volcanic activity and warmed by the Portuguese sun. Mighty peaks pierce the clouds, wild beaches hug the edge, and more than 1,000 miles of levadas (Madeiran aqueducts) run through the middle, providing plenty of scenic walks. Explore the best bits on our eight-day adventure, Walking the Island of Madeira. You’ll hike the most beautiful levadas, watch sunrise from Pico Arieiro, one of the island’s highest mountains, and walk through the mystical Fanal Forest, where the twisted trees look like they’re plucked from a fairytale. Also dip into the unique culture of Funchal, the island capital, where you can choose to join an unforgettable whale-watching trip – the nearby waters are frequented by 28 whale and dolphin species.

Best for Hiking: Walking the Island of Madeira, 8 days exodustravels.com/trip/tsd2

CYCLE

Beautiful landscapes, good infrastructure and a pleasant climate, particularly either side of summer, make Portugal ideal for a pedal-powered adventure. For the leisurely cyclist, it’s the coastal routes that call the loudest – and with some 1,115 miles of that, there’s plenty to explore. Our Porto to Lisbon Atlantic Ride is one of our best-loved adventures, a winning combination of seaside bliss and standout guides, including our latest Leader of the Year winner, João Colaço. This is an Exodus adventure, so expect the extraordinary. You’ll start in historic Porto (port wine tasting included), before riding the Atlantic coastline, stopping to explore pretty seaside towns and the protected natural reserve of the São Jacinto dunes. There’s also time to soothe achy muscles on the beach, before finishing in Lisbon – a glamorous end to an unforgettable adventure.

While each region of Italy boasts its own delicious and distinctive flavors, shaped by local climate, harvests, and centuries of tradition, the essence of Italian cooking is timeless.

TastingItaly

It’s a deep respect for fresh, seasonal ingredients, simplicity in preparation, and the joy of gathering around the table to devour every bite with gusto. From rustic trattorias to tucked-away family-run restaurants where the recipes taste just like nonna used to make, our expert local guides don’t just show you where to eat – they share the stories behind each dish and how these time-honored flavors have shaped Italian culture itself.

Vania De Paoli, our expert local guide from Veneto who grew up harvesting vegetables on her grandfather’s vineyard in Nervesa della Battaglia, has a genuine passion for bringing Italy’s culinary traditions to life on her trips. “For me, Italian cooking is all about simple pleasures. Imagine tender spit-roasted pork that practically leaps off the bone, delicate ravioli bursting with ricotta and asparagus, and crostata warm from the oven – my mum used to bake it so often the whole house smelled like a pastry shop. And when acacia flowers bloom in April, we fry them – because why not turn blossoms into dessert?

Further south, the Amalfi Coast has lured traders, sailors, and dreamers for centuries –and with good reason. This rugged coastline has a long tradition of turning the freshest local ingredients into dishes and drinks worth traveling for. And while the spectacular coastal trails get plenty of attention, our Amalfi Coast expert, Veriano Verde, who grew up nearby surrounded by the region’s beauty (and more than a few sweet temptations), will tell you there’s much more to La Dolce Vita than soaking up the panoramic views. “I make it my mission to tell all my groups to visit L’Alambicco in Agerola – an exceptional family-run limoncello business where three passionate brothers turn lemons into something far better than lemonade. And if you don’t have a sweet tooth, try Scialatielli all’Amalfitana, a fresh, thick pasta swimming in a rich seafood sauce you’ll never forget.”

Discover Street Eats in Sicily

Sicily’s culinary charms start strong in Palermo, where your expert guide will lead you straight to the sizzling stalls and crumbcrusted kiosks locals swear by. Sample street food icons like panelle, arancini, and sfincione, all beloved staples in a typical Sicilian diet. From there, swap the markets for a cookery class in hilltop Erice, taste Marsala’s famous fortified wines, and wander the Valley of the Temples. En route, you learn about olive oil production, savor farm-fresh ricotta, and sip Etna wines at the foot of the volcano. In Sicily, every day is a feast.

Solo travel has bloomed over the past few years, particularly in the small-group adventure scene. Liberation and life-long friends await, but you may have a few questions before you take the leap. Here, Exodus experts answer questions from those about to go it alone.

I’m joining a cycling trip by myself. How do I know I can keep up with the group?

It’s a good, common question; but don’t worry, we have many steps to ‘level the playing field’. Here are my top tips:

• Review our Activity Levels, so you book the best trip for your experience/fitness.

• Consider an e-bike if you’re still unsure. Very few who take one regret it!

• Cycle before your trip, including on hills.

• Consider bringing specialist kit to make your ride more comfortable: a saddle (your own or a gel cover), padded shorts, stiff closetoed shoes, helmet, gloves and eyewear.

Additionally, on trip, you’ll have regular or emergency access to a support vehicle should you need it.

With these tips, I’m sure you’ll love the riding, the exercise, and the vacation!

I understand that solo travelers room together, can I get my own room?

Absolutely! Like most tour operators, we normally pair two solo travelers together in a twin-share room.

It’s a great way to instantly connect with someone; over the years, we’ve seen countless people go from roommates to lifelong friends.

But, if you’d prefer your own space, you can upgrade to a single room for a supplement in most destinations (if single rooms are not available for any part of the tour, we make this clear in the Trip Notes).

If you need any further information or have any additional questions regarding single rooms, please ask your sales representative at the time of booking.

I’ve booked a trip, but I’m a little nervous about integrating with the group. What can I expect?

From the moment you meet your group and tour leader, you become a unit, often affectionately known as a ‘tour family.’

Our tour leaders are trained to create a warm and welcoming environment from day one.

A shared WhatsApp group keeps everyone connected, so you’ll never miss a meet-up, group dinner invite, or that perfect photo.

In my experience, like-minded travelers quickly find common ground. Group dinners are soon filled with stories of past trips, growing everyone’s bucket list in the process. And it’s the people – those you laugh, explore, and summit mountains with – that make the journey unforgettable.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Mountains mean air, space and a sense of freedom. I can walk forever in the Himalayan mountains. That’s why I’ve been doing it for more than 40 years, and I will continue doing it for as long as my legs will take me.”

VALERIE PARKINSON

EXODUS LEADER LADAKH

To Valerie, Ladakh is more than a pin on a map – it’s where the rhythm of mountain life feels most familiar.

This vast, frozen landscape is where silence settles deep, where shadows shift across the snow-capped peaks, and secrets take patience to uncover. It’s not just the cold that takes your breath away – it’s the scale, the solitude, and the sense that you’re moving through a place that isn’t easily given, but slowly earned.

Valerie has been guiding here in the Himalaya for decades, building lifelong connections with the land and the people who call it home. “They don’t need for much materially,” she says. “Spiritually, they have everything.”

Her knowledge of the terrain, the wildlife, and the culture is second to none. Valerie doesn’t just trek through these mountains – she belongs to them. And every so often, they reveal something extraordinary. Just ask Max Bickerstaffe, who joined one of her trips back in March which led to him standing just ten feet from a snow leopard. “No one said a word; we just stood and watched in silence. It wasn’t disbelief, just the quiet recognition that we were witnessing something extremely rare,” Max recalled. “It’s hard to describe just how special this place is. You don’t just see snow leopards – you experience where they live, you embrace the elements like they do and meet the people who share the landscape with them. Traveling with someone like Valerie, who has spent decades building trust and knowledge here – it makes all the difference.”

Some moments are too big for words. In the Himalaya, Valerie knows: you wait, you listen –and let the mountains speak.

Valerie leads our Searching for Snow Leopard trip, Manaslu Lodge Circuit and the Peaks of Ladakh, among other standout adventures. To find out where she’s heading in 2026, call our travel team today.

When it comes to our leaders, we work with the best. From seasoned leaders with decades of experience to third-generation guides, our expertise runs deep. But it’s their dedication that sets them apart. Our leaders have been known to run Portugal’s cycling routes at sunrise to guarantee perfect conditions, surprise you with marigold garlands in India’s flower markets and whip up birthday cakes high in the Himalaya – that’s the Exodus touch.
