Summer Art Show 2021 Exeter School
Art Department What a year! This year has been a huge challenge for everyone. Thank you for coming out to join in the celebration we have here. We welcome you into the art department to see this year’s summer exhibition as a sign of hope for the future, and to showcase the continued hard work and resilient pupils of Exeter School. Despite everything, the work on display demonstrates how dedicated our budding young artists are. The art department has been a little quieter without all the trips and open studios, but the creative process has continued regardless. In the autumn term Lower Fifth had the chance to join a photography club with Mr Wilkins. The Big Draw brought in over 600 entries with this year’s theme focussing on the relationship between people and our living environments and ecosystems, highlighting how we live today and the ways in which we do and do not harmonise with nature. In the art department, this got us thinking about all the tea bags that have been thrown away. In the last few months, the art department staff have been saving their used tea bags, drying them out and opening them up to create an alternative drawing surface. Tea has been a huge comfort for us all through the various lockdowns and we wanted to preserve these special moments. Using tea bags in art is an idea which has gained momentum in recent years; tea bags have been drawn on, stitched into, printed on or utilised in sculptures and installations. The Third Form welcome event in autumn involved all pupils creating collaborative shields, using art as an experience to bond and form new connections. Lower Fifth pupils created lino prints for the Christmas card which were printed for use by the Head. The pupils have had to adjust to online learning for part of the year with lockdown number 3. Teaching and learning art has not been the same at home, but the pupils managed really well. The Lower Sixth still completed their end of project final piece, the Upper Fifth all made a
2020 - 2021 wonderful start to their portraiture projects and the Upper Sixth delved deeper into their personal projects. Despite the limitation of some materials at home, art learning has continued. Third, Fourth and Lower Fifth pupils were encouraged with their newfound spare time at home to enter Grayson Perry’s Art Club, prompted by different themes each week. The theme for this year’s staff art show began with a series of styrofoam heads. Each staff member could take a head and interpret it, experiment with it, play with it how they wished, and we had quite the range of outcomes. Back in school, pupils have experimented with lots of different mediums and looked at lots of different artists as you will see throughout the exhibition and catalogue. The Lower Sixth held their ‘Communications’ exhibition and Upper Fifth pupils opting to study Art in the sixth form undertook a pre-A Level art course in May, making sketchbooks exploring collaboration, printing with Tetra Pak and abstraction. This last year had forced us all to stop, look and take notice of small things around us. The pupils here at Exeter School showed real dedication to their art practice even through challenging times, I hope you can all join us in complimenting these young artists on how hard they have worked and resilient they have been. Lower Fifth Form Pupils have been working on ‘Portraiture’ since January as a theme for the rest of the year. They have explored different portraits both digital and physical. Physical ways of creating have included technical sketching and etching. Digital drawing and photomontages have been explored based on artists Andy Warhol, Kristin Lidström and Lui Ferryrea through their iPads.

Middle Fifth Form This year, as part of their GCSE coursework, pupils have explored the theme of ‘Collections’ by studying a wide range of artists and techniques. This has included drawing and printmaking workshops during lesson time, alongside digital photography and manipulation tasks completed working remotely. The following screen prints included below were inspired by the artist Peter Blake, with pupils designing their own record sleeve cover using their initials for typography.

Lower Sixth Form - Communication Exhibition As part of the Lower Sixth Form art course, pupils responded to the title ‘Communications’. The large pieces of work show a series of independent ideas coming together. They have created these final pieces in lockdown.

Upper Sixth Form The Upper Sixth pupils have shown real dedication to their personal projects this year. In their personal projects, pupils can pursue an independent line of enquiry allowing the artists to really show off their interests, personal artistic style and medium of choice. Their projects have explored the themes of: ‘Expression’, ‘Decay’, ‘Music and Fashion’ and ‘Graphic Representation of the Human Form’.

They spent the year experimenting with different styles and mediums to help inform their final piece. The pupils have not had their exam in the same way this year but that has not stopped them from bringing their project to an end. Although not all work is finished as much as these artists would have hoped for, they have clearly shown, as you can see, such a lot of effort in their projects throughout the year.

The Big Draw 2020
The theme for this year’s Big Draw focused on the relationship between people and our living environments and ecosystems, highlighting how we live today and the ways in which we do and do not harmonise with nature. We reflected on how much tea we consumed during the first national lockdown and came up with the idea of repurposing used tea bags as a drawing surface. This resulted in a dynamic range of thoughtful illustrations depicting the activities that gave each pupil a little bit of positivity during such a challenging time.
Third Form Welcome Days In the autumn term 2020, Third Form pupils collaborated on a series of decorative shields, inspired by family crests and heraldry. Pupils had to consider different motifs that depicted their personality and combine these together to produce a colourful and vibrant outcome.
Lower Sixth Exam The Lower Sixth have finished off their year with an exam project based on one of the following themes: ‘The Sea’, ‘Everyday Objects’, ‘Patterns’ and ‘Gestural Marks’. Each pupil has had the choice of topic and medium to work with, ranging from painting to resin casting, to installation and screen printing. In this project we really encourage pupils to be bold, take risks and try something out of their normal artistic comfort zone, and they have delivered that.

Junior School Printmaking Workshop In the summer term, the Senior School Art Department were delighted to welcome Upper Two pupils from Junior School to participate in a printmaking workshop. The aim of the session was to produce a collagraph plate, using shallow relief in the form of thin layers of card, and print the plate (all within 30 minutes!). Pupils created a range of patterned and dynamic designs inspired by moths, dragonflies, and butterflies. These culminated in a series of colourful and vibrant prints.
Lower School - Art Club Art club and the studios have sadly been a little quieter at lunchtime this year, due to year group bubbles. The focus of the work produced in art club this year has been creating art work for modern foreign langauges and the pupils have been looking at each country and their culture to create their final compositions.
