THE ETERNAL LEGACY OF ELEGANCE

Born in 1934 in Piacenza, northern Italy, Giorgio Armani did not seem destined to revolutionize the world of fashion. He began studying Medicine but soon abandoned it, finding his first job at La Rinascente department store in Milan, where he worked as a window dresser. That early contact with textiles awakened a vocation that would lead him to become one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.

His breakthrough came in the 1970s, when he founded his own brand and transformed men’s tailoring. He introduced unlined jackets, more relaxed cuts than fashion dictated at the time, and a style that blended comfort with sophistication. His designs quickly conquered not only Italy but the entire world.

FROM HOLLYWOOD TO THE RED CARPET Armani soon became the ultimate representative of international fashion. In 1980, Richard Gere wore his suits in the film American Gigolo, a turning point that launched his brand in the United States. From then on, his name became forever linked to the red carpet. Hollywood actors and actresses found in his creations the perfect ally to showcase timeless elegance without excess. Armani’s talent lay in his ability to merge sobriety with allure, consolidating a style that defined luxury without ostentation. For more than half a century, his empire remained independent. Armani consistently refused to sell his company, choosing instead to preserve both the creative and business control of his brand. He diversified into different lines, allowing his vision to reach a wide audience.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MYTH

On the runway, Armani was a relentless perfectionist, but personally he always remained discreet. Highly private, he shared much of his life with Sergio Galeotti, his partner in both business and love, who passed away in 1985. Their relationship was crucial to the brand’s growth, as together they built the foundations of the Armani empire.

In his later years, Armani revealed a more vulnerable side. In an interview published shortly before his passing, he admitted that his only regret was devoting too much time to work, stealing it from family and friends. It was the personal price he had paid for building one of fashion’s greatest empires—a confession that revealed the sensitivity of the man behind the myth.

ARMANI/SILOS, THE DESIGNER’S DREAM

Aware of his pivotal role in fashion, one of Armani’s most significant projects beyond the runway was the creation of Armani/Silos, a museum inaugurated in Milan in 2015 to mark his 40-year career. Housed in a former grain silo, the space reflects his aesthetic: sober, monumental, almost austere. The museum holds over 600 garments and 200 accessories, organized into thematic sections such as Androgynous, Ethnicities, and Stars. Here, one can not only admire his creative evolution but also understand how Armani envisioned fashion.

Since its opening, Armani/Silos has become the perfect summary of his legacy—a place where his vision remains alive, inspiring new generations.

AN ETERNAL LEGACY

Giorgio Armani passed away on September 4, 2025, at his home in Milan, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loved ones. The announcement of his death moved the fashion industry, eager to pay tribute to the man who defined contemporary elegance for more than five decades.

His farewell was held in Milan with a private funeral at the Teatro Armani, consistent with his discreet character. The world, however, bid him goodbye with tributes pouring in from every corner of the globe, honoring a man who dared to rewrite the rules of dressing. A perfectionist and creatively active until the very end, Armani always believed in designs that enhanced the personality of the wearer without overshadowing it. Perhaps that is why the suits and dresses he created throughout his career remain so relevant—embodying an idea of elegance far removed from fleeting trends. His departure leaves an immeasurable void, but also a legacy that transcends. In collective memory, he will forever remain il signor Armani—the man who taught the world to fight for one’s dreams and showed that true sophistication emanates from within.

Comenzó estudiando Medicina, pero pronto abandonó los estudios y encontró su primer empleo en los grandes almacenes La Rinascente de Milán, donde trabajó como escaparatista. Aquel contacto con el universo textil despertó una vocación que lo llevaría a convertirse en uno de los diseñadores más influyentes del siglo XX. Armani se convirtió en el más claro exponente de la moda internacional. EL HOMBRE DETRÁS DEL MITO

Si en las pasarelas Armani se mostraba como un perfeccionista empedernido, en lo personal siempre hizo gala de ser un hombre discreto. Muy reservado con su vida privada, compartió una gran parte de su vida con Sergio Galeotti, su socio y compañero sentimental, que falleció en 1985. ARMANI/SILOS, EL SUEÑO DEL DISEÑADOR

Consciente de su papel trascendente en el mundo de la moda, uno de los proyectos más significativos de Armani fuera de la pasarela fue la creación del museo Armani/Silos, inaugurado en Milán en 2015 con motivo de sus 40 años de carrera. El espacio, instalado en un antiguo silo de grano, refleja la estética del diseñador: sobria, monumental, casi austera. THE ART OF DREAMING

Roberto Coin is a brand of fine jewelry whose operational and production headquarters are located in Vicenza, the jewelry capital of Italy. The jewels in the collection are made with three colors of gold, in polished and satin finishes, to wear together for a total-look effect. The design reintroduces the four-petal diamond flower that has been the center of other of the brand’s collections. The constant repetition of the flower over the entire surface of the jewels is an esthetic evocation of the architectural structure of the Arena of Verona, another one of the city’s emblems.

Restaurante Abya is a paradise of Mexican cuisine, located in the opulent Palacio de Saldaña in Madrid’s Salamanca district. Under the direction of chef Aurelio Morales, we enjoyed a tasting of an array of exclusive tequilas from Hemisphere Spirits, Montemplo, Prófugo, Penca Luz and Penca del Alma.

Quesería La Antigua in Fuentesaúco presented its cheese board, offering guests a unique experience of enjoying cheese with creative and unusual decorations. Specialising in the production of cheese from raw sheep’s milk, Quesería La Antigua uses traditional methods to create its cheeses, paying the same level of care and attention as in years gone by. It is a renowned company and a member of the Spanish Luxury Association, Luxury Spain

The terrace experience featured a delicious barbecue courtesy of Junk Smash Burger, which was named Spain’s best burger in 2022 and the best delivery burger in 2024. It was also awarded the Repsol Solete for fast food in both 2023 and 2024. Enrique Tomás, whose brand is committed to quality and excellence, was also present at this memorable event. He treated us to an exclusive ham-cutting demonstration. This entrepreneur started out in 1987 by opening his own establishments, which then expanded throughout the province of Barcelona. Today, his company is the world’s largest chain of ham shops.

Basque chef Asier Bejarano surprised guests with a tasting menu specially prepared for the occasion. Quooker taps are revolutionising the kitchen thanks to their innovative system that provides instant hot water.

The sweet finale came courtesy of Estela Hojaldre’s puff pastries.

Puff pastry virtuoso Estela Gutiérrez surprised everyone with a selection of delicious treats that rounded off a wonderful evening. Recommended by José Carlos Capel, this artisan bakery in Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras neighbourhood is a veritable temple for lovers of sweet treats.

Dos Rombos also surprised us with their innovative range of ice creams, which reinvent classic cocktails and traditional flavour combinations. Examples include Cuplé (Madagascar vanilla with Laphroaig 10 whisky and caramelised walnut), Carrá (Piedmont hazelnut, Frangelico and Belvedere vodka), and Irish Coffee (coffee, Teeling Irish whiskey and spiced Guinness reduction). Alba, what inspired the creation of your upcoming book, Money Can’t Buy: The New Frontier of Luxury? What message do you hope to share through it?

This book was born from years of traveling — through the world, through fashion, and through thought, but above all, through people. After years inside the industry, I realized that the most powerful form of luxury is not what we sell, but what we make people feel. ‘Money can’t buy’ experiences are not about excess; they are about access. The book is both a reflection and a declaration. It gives voice to a generation that no longer sees luxury as an object, but as a language of emotion, connection, and cultural relevance.”

You lead large-scale recruitment for luxury openings. What are the unique challenges in doing this at a global scale?

Each market has its own cultural, operational, and legal nuances—but the core remains the same: people want purpose, recognition, and growth. The challenge is in finding individuals who can deliver excellence consistently, while still expressing authenticity. Global scale requires a flexible strategy— blending strong local insight with a unified vision of service and brand values.

You’ve lived and worked in London, Milan, Paris, and New York — four capitals of culture and style. How have they shaped your vision of luxury and life?

Each city sharpened a different side of my vision. Milan revealed il senso del bello: beauty as craftsmanship, emotion, and storytelling; that instinctive understanding of harmony and detail where design and romance speak the same language. Paris defined luxury as belonging: the origin of the maison culture, where every element, from a silhouette to a gesture, follows a fil rouge of refinement. London expanded my perspective: multicultural, omnichannel, and efficient; a city that merges creativity with precision and keeps an eye on what’s next. New York instilled a CEO mindset: speed, clarity, and execution; how to act fast, think globally, and make complexity feel effortless, even snackable. Together, these cities became my education: emotional yet strategic, timeless yet fast. A balance where culture meets performance. I like to say I was born Italian, trained European, and shaped American.

Which do you see as the main challenges and opportunities shaping today’s luxury environment?

This is a delicate but fertile moment for luxury. We’re navigating sustainability, global volatility, consumer fragmentation, and market saturation, forces that are not threats but catalysts for evolution. Sustainability has become the real measure of credibility. It’s no longer about storytelling or campaigns; it’s about action, transparency, and accountability. Economic uncertainty pushes brands to justify value beyond price — to embody purpose and permanence.

At the same time, we speak to multiple audiences with different codes and expectations. The challenge is to remain coherent while being

deeply personal. And yes, the market is saturated, but that’s what makes meaning the ultimate differentiator.

In your book, you describe a future where personalization, community, and conscience converge. How do you imagine the next era of luxury taking shape?

Exclusivity will evolve from something you have to something you are part of. Personalization will move beyond the object. It’s not about initials on a bag, but about translating a person’s essence into an experience. Technology will make it possible, but emotion will make it meaningful. Luxury will also become more cultural — less about status, more about connection. And conscience will be the new sophistication. Integrity and purpose will define what feels truly aspirational.

The future belongs to brands that can innovate without losing humanity — that move fast, but stay true.

What do you believe are the true outcomes of luxury? What should it ultimately deliver?

Luxury today should be nurtured across three angles of action: from Outside, from Within, and Across. From the outside, it grows through B2B ecosystems: collaboration with hospitality, mobility, finance, and culture that create money-can’t-buy experiences and open new worlds of access. These partnerships aren’t about exposure; they’re about building relevance, trust, and shared value. From within, everything starts with people. Employees are not extensions of the brand; they are the brand. Their tone, their care, their precision define how the maison is perceived. When culture is strong internally, excellence becomes effortless externally. Across, Clienteling remains the bridge that keeps luxury human. It’s not just a CRM system or a transaction flow — it’s a conversation. The space where intuition meets data, where relationships turn into loyalty. Clienteling is what transforms information into emotion, and emotion into business.

HISPANIDAD MORE THAN A LEGACY

When we speak of Hispanidad, we do not mean a date on the calendar or a relic of the past. We speak of a living community of nations, peoples, and cultures stretching from the Andes to the Guadalquivir, from the Amazonian jungles to the Castilian plains. Hispanidad is the language we share—but it is also much more: The common faith that raised churches and cathedrals. A culture that blended indigenous wisdom with European humanism. A mestizo heritage, born from the meeting of two civilizations.

PERU: THE CORNERSTONE OF HISPANIDAD

If one nation embodies the essence of Hispanidad, it is Peru. Here flourished the greatest pre-Columbian civilizations, and here Spain encountered a people with deep roots.

From that encounter emerged Hispanic Peru, cradle of saints such as Rose of Lima and Toribio de Mogrovejo, a land of sages, poets, and warriors. The Viceroyalty of Peru became the most powerful and extensive in the world. From Lima radiated power, culture, and faith across the Pacific, encompassing territories that today include Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. This made Peru the administrative and spiritual center of South America.

INTEGRATION OF THE INCA NOBILITY

The Viceroyalty was not only about domination, but also about integration. The Inca nobility was absorbed into the new viceregal order with titles, privileges, and recognition. Some, like Sayri Túpac, reached agreements with the Crown; others, like Pau Inca and Carlos Inca, embraced Christianity and became fully integrated. Thus, the grandeur of Tahuantinsuyo did not vanish—it found new expression within the emerging Hispanidad.

EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE

Education was one of the Viceroyalty’s greatest legacies.

The University of Santo Tomás de Aquino in Santo Domingo (1538) was the first in the Americas. In 1551, the National University of San Marcos was founded in Lima—the oldest continuously operating university in the hemisphere—alongside the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico.

By the end of the colonial period, Spaniards had founded more than 25 universities across the Americas, while the Portuguese had not established a single one in Brazil. Schools for indigenous nobles and for women were also established, alongside the Jesuit-run Colegios Mayores.

THE FIRST

INDIGENOUS GRAMMARS

The evangelizing mission gave rise to the first grammars of indigenous language, decades before England or France codified their own. Works in Nahuatl, Purépecha, and Quechua appeared in the mid-16th century.

The first English grammar would not be printed until 1586; French would not have a systematic grammar until 1635. Here again, Hispanidad was a pioneer.

CITIES, HOSPITALS, AND THE BALMIS EXPEDITION

Spanish urban planning transformed the Americas. Today, UNESCO recognizes 27 Hispanic American cities as World Heritage Sites, and more than 200 cities founded in the 16th and 17th centuries remain vital urban centers. Christian charity also left hospitals, such as the Royal Hospital of San Andrés in Lima. But the pinnacle came with the Balmis Expedition (1803–1806)—the world’s first global vaccination campaign—bringing the smallpox vaccine from Spain to the Americas and Asia, saving millions of lives.

HUMBOLDT AND HISPANIC PROSPERITY

Alexander von Humboldt, the great scientist, traveled through the Americas and left testimony to the prosperity of the Spanish domains: the cultural refinement of Havana, the high wages of Mexican miners, the relatively high proportion of free people in Cuba, and the happiness he observed in towns under Spanish law. His words stand as a powerful counterpoint to the Black Legend.

ROSENDO PORLIER: A FORGOTTEN PIONEER

The Hispanic epic even reached Antarctica. In 1819, Peruvian-born officer Rosendo Porlier, commanding the ship San Telmo, was wrecked near Cape Horn, and his men are believed to have been the first to set foot on the frozen continent—decades before official accounts credited others. To remember Porlier is to restore a piece of historical justice.

A LIVING LEGACY

To speak of Hispanidad in Peru is to speak of ourselves. It is to remember that we are not orphans of history, but heirs to a shared greatness.

Hispanidad built universities, schools, hospitals, and cities; it dignified languages, fostered cultures, spread faith and knowledge, and launched the first global health mission. Even at the edge of the world, in Antarctica, it left its mark.

May the pride of being Hispanic never fade from our hearts.

May we never forget that we belong to an immense family that speaks the same language, prays to the same saints, sings the same songs, and dreams the same dreams.

Cuando hablamos de Hispanidad, no hablamos de una fecha ni de un recuerdo polvoriento. Hablamos de una comunidad viva de naciones, pueblos y culturas que se extiende desde las cumbres de los Andes hasta las orillas del Guadalquivir; desde las selvas amazónicas hasta las llanuras castellanas. Hispanidad es la lengua que compartimos, pero también es mucho más: La fe común que levantó iglesias y catedrales. La cultura que fusionó la sabiduría indígena con el humanismo europeo. La sangre mestiza, síntesis de lo mejor de dos mundos.

PERÚ: PIEDRA ANGULAR DE LA HISPANIDAD

Si hay una nación que representa el corazón de la Hispanidad, esa es el Perú. Aquí se levantaron las más altas civilizaciones precolombinas y aquí España encontró un pueblo con raíces profundas. De ese encuentro nació el Perú hispano, cuna de santos como Rosa de Lima o Toribio de Mogrovejo, tierra de sabios, poetas y guerreros. El Virreinato del Perú fue el más poderoso y extenso del mundo. Desde Lima se irradiaba poder, cultura y fe a todo el Pacífico. En su máxima extensión abarcaba territorios que hoy son Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela y Panamá. Perú, centro neurálgico, con Lima como capital. Bolivia (Alto Perú), con la riqueza inmensa de Potosí. Ecuador y Colombia, integradas hasta la creación del Virreinato de Nueva Granada. Chile, bajo la Real Audiencia. Argentina, Paraguay y Uruguay, hasta el Virreinato del Río de la Plata (1776). Panamá y Venezuela, hasta 1739. Esto demuestra que el Perú fue el eje administrativo y espiritual de toda Sudamérica.

MANTENIMIENTO E INTEGRACIÓN DE LA NOBLEZA INCA

El Virreinato no fue solo dominación, también fue integración. La nobleza inca se incorporó en la nueva estructura virreinal con títulos, privilegios y reconocimientos. Se otorgaron títulos de hidalgos de Castilla a los incas cristianizados. En el Cuzco se creó el Alferazgo Real, que reunía a las panacas y elegía al alférez real, quien portaba la mascapaicha y presidía actos públicos. Líderes como Sayri Túpac pactaron con la Corona, recibiendo tierras y honores. Otros, como Pau Inca y Carlos Inca, abrazaron el cristianismo y fueron integrados plenamente. Así, la grandeza del Tahuantinsuyo no desapareció: encontró nuevos cauces dentro de la Hispanidad naciente.

EDUCACIÓN, UNIVERSIDADES Y COLEGIOS

Uno de los mayores legados del virreinato fue la educación.

La Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino en Santo Domingo (1538) fue la primera de América, y en 1551 se fundó en Lima la Universidad Nacional

Mayor de San Marcos, la más antigua en funcionamiento continuo. Ese mismo año nació la Real y Pontificia Universidad de México. Durante la colonia, los españoles fundaron más de 25 universidades en América, entre ellas: Córdoba (1613, Argentina). San Francisco Xavier (1624, Sucre, Bolivia).Javeriana (1623, Bogotá). San Carlos (1676, Guatemala). La Habana (1728). San Antonio Abad (1692, Cusco). Frente a esto, el dato es claro: los portugueses no fundaron ninguna universidad en Brasil durante la colonia.

También se crearon colegios para caciques, como el de San Pablo en Lima y el de San Francisco de Borja en Cusco, y colegios femeninos en Cusco, Ica, Trujillo y Arequipa. Los Colegios Mayores funcionaban como residencias estudiantiles, destacando el de San Pablo en Lima, dirigido por los jesuitas.

LAS PRIMERAS GRAMÁTICAS

INDÍGENAS

La misión evangelizadora llevó también a escribir las primeras gramáticas de lenguas indígenas, mucho antes que Inglaterra y Francia tuvieran gramáticas de sus propios idiomas. Arte de la lengua mexicana (náhuatl), de fray Andrés de Olmos (1547). Arte de la lengua de Michoacán (purépecha), de Maturino Gilberti (1558). Gramática de la lengua general de los indios de los reinos del Perú (quechua), de Domingo de Santo Tomás (1560).

La primera gramática del inglés se imprimió en 1586, ¡casi 40 años después de la de Olmos! Y la del francés no se sistematizó hasta la fundación de la Académie Française en 1635. La Hispanidad, por tanto, fue pionera en dignificar y codificar las lenguas indígenas.

CIUDADES PATRIMONIO DE LA HUMANIDAD

El urbanismo español transformó América. Hoy, la UNESCO reconoce 27 ciudades hispanoamericanas como Patrimonio de la Humanidad: Ciudad de México, Oaxaca, Puebla, Morelia, Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Campeche, Tlacotalpan, Santo Domingo, La Habana, Cartagena, Quito, Cusco, Lima, Arequipa, Sucre, Potosí, Antigua Guatemala, Granada, León Viejo, Colonia del Sacramento, Córdoba, entre otras. En total, los españoles fundaron más de 200 ciudades en América en los siglos XVI y XVII, muchas de las cuales son hoy capitales modernas.

HOSPITALES Y LA EXPEDICIÓN BALMIS

La caridad cristiana levantó hospitales como el Real de San Andrés en Lima. Pero la cumbre de la medicina hispana

llegó con la Real Expedición Filantrópica de la Vacuna (1803–1806), dirigida por Francisco Javier de Balmis. Fue la primera campaña de vacunación global de la historia, que llevó la vacuna contra la viruela desde España a América y Asia. Para mantenerla viva en el viaje, se usó a 22 niños huérfanos, inoculando la vacuna de brazo en brazo. Recorrieron Canarias, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, México, Filipinas, Macao Cantón, salvando millones de vidas. Esta fue la primera gran misión humanitaria internacional de salud pública.

HUMBOLDT Y LA PROSPERIDAD HISPANA

El gran científico Alexander von Humboldt viajó por América y dejó un testimonio revelador: En su Ensayo político sobre la Isla de Cuba (1826) destacó la prosperidad de la isla bajo España, la apertura comercial y la cultura refinada de La Habana. En 1810 observó que en Cuba el 64% de la población era libre, frente al 19% en colonias británicas. Subrayó que la legislación española favorecía la manumisión y que la sociedad habanera era una de las más cultas de América. En México afirmó: “Los mineros de la Nueva España son los mejor pagados del mundo”, ganando hasta siete veces más que en Alemania. En una carta desde Cumaná llegó a escribir: “No veo pueblos más felices que los gobernados por España”.

UN TESTIMONIO INCONTESTABLE CONTRA LA LEYENDA NEGRA.

Rosendo Porlier: el hispano que llegó primero a la Antártida

La gesta hispana llegó hasta los confines de la Tierra. En 1819, el marino limeño Rosendo Porlier, al mando del navío San Telmo, naufragó en el Cabo de Hornos y su tripulación desembarcó en tierras desconocidas: la Antártida.

Sin saberlo, Porlier y sus hombres fueron los primeros en pisar ese continente. Sin embargo, la historia oficial silenció este hecho, atribuyéndolo después a británicos y noruegos.

Recordar a Rosendo Porlier es un acto de justicia histórica: España también fue pionera en la última frontera del planeta.

BAZLAMA BRINGS THE MOST ‘CHIC’ TURKISH BREAKFAST TO THE COSTA DEL SOL Bazlama, located in the El Paraíso area of Estepona, introduces the Costa del Sol to the most ‘chic’ Turkish breakfast, rooted in family recipes passed down through generations. The breakfast features, among other delicacies, Turkish tea and coffee, traditional breads, cheeses, jams, and hot dishes. The restaurant’s owners also marked the founding day of the Republic of Turkey—October 29, 1923—in a special way. Giannis Toman, born in 1981 in Thessaloniki (Greece), is the Executive Chef at Mett Marbella – Estepona. With over 15 years of culinary experience, he is a passionate chef specializing in Mediterranean cuisine (Greek, Italian, and Spanish), French gastronomy, and fusion cooking. His culinary journey began in an unusual way: at a young age, he was compelled to cook for his younger sister in his native Greece.

What started as a duty soon became his true passion. Giannis discovered his vocation for gastronomy, a path that would eventually lead him to become an exceptional chef. His solid professional training includes experience in prestigious hotels and restaurants across Europe. From 2002 to 2006, he worked as Chef de Partie at Potidea Palace Hotel in Khalkidhiki, Central Macedonia (Greece). Between 2013 and 2016, he continued refining his craft at Travel Charme Hotels & Resorts in Salzburg (Austria), and as Chef de Partie at SANI Resort in Halkidiki (Greece). From 2016 to 2018, he took his talent to Switzerland, joining the culinary teams at the Gstaad Palace and the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. His true rise, however, began in 2018, when he joined Ikos Resorts in Nea Moudaniá (Greece), first as Sous Chef in

the French restaurant. A year later, he was promoted to Head Chef, overseeing two restaurants: one Italian and one fusion. In 2020, his career reached new heights when he was appointed Executive Sous Chef at Ikos Marbella, Spain, before joining the team at METT Hotel & Beach Resort in May 2023.

Giannis’s culinary philosophy is rooted in preserving the gastronomic traditions of each restaurant he leads. He firmly believes that simplicity and the quality of ingredients are the key to true authenticity in cooking—a principle that defines his approach to creating exceptional dishes. NEW JUDGMENT TOWARD TAX EQUALITY

BETWEEN EU AND NON-EU TAXPAYERS IN SPAIN

The judgment delivered by the Audiencia Nacional ( Spain’s National High Court) on 28 July 2025 (Administrative Chamber, Fourth Section, Case No. 636/2021) has recognised the right of a non-EU resident — a U.S. citizen — to deduct expenses associated with the rental of her property located in Spain.

This ruling is both novel and significant because, until this decision, Spanish tax law—specifically Article 24.6 of Royal Legislative Decree 5/2004— granted such a right solely to residents of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). Non-EU residents were therefore required to pay tax on their gross rental income, without the possibility of any deductions.

In this case, the U.S. taxpayer declared the rental income derived from her Spanish property using Form 210 under the Non-Resident Income Tax (Impuesto sobre la Renta de No Residentes, IRNR) and requested to deduct the necessary expenses incurred in generating that income — such as property tax (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles, IBI), community fees, repairs, depreciation, and similar costs.

The Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) denied the deductions, arguing that only EU/EEA residents could claim them.

The TEAC (Central Economic-Administrative Tribunal) upheld that administrative decision, prompting the taxpayer to appeal to the Audiencia Nacional, invoking (i) the principle of free movement of capital (Article 63 TFEU), and (ii) the non-discrimination clause contained within the Spain-U.S. Double Taxation Treaty.

The Audiencia Nacional based its reasoning on three essential arguments: 1. Principle of Free Movement of Capital (Art. 63 TFEU)

• This principle prohibits restrictions on capital movements not only between EU Member States but also between Member States and third countries.

• The Court recalled that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has recognised its application beyond the EU, particularly in cases of tax discrimination affecting cross-border investments, including the purchase or rental of real estate.

2. Unjustified Discrimination

• Spanish legislation treats EU/EEA residents more favourably than non-EU residents, without an objective or proportionate justification.

• There is no valid reason — neither in relation to tax control nor to the coherence of tax systems — to deny deductions to a taxpayer from a country that maintains an effective exchange of tax information with Spain, such as the United States.

3. Application of the Spain-U.S. Double Taxation Treaty

• The bilateral treaty contains a non-discrimination clause (Article 24) preventing Spain from taxing U.S. residents more heavily than Spanish residents in comparable situations.

• The Court held that if Spanish or EU residents are allowed to deduct such expenses, the same right must be accorded to a U.S. resident unless there exists a legitimate reason to deny it.

Accordingly, the Audiencia Nacional upheld the appeal and annulled the TEAC’s decision. Accordingly, it recognized the right of the non-EU taxpayer to deduct expenses directly related to the rental of the property located in Spain, and ordered the tax authorities to recalculate the taxable base accordingly.

This ruling paves the way for non-EU residents (from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Switzerland, etc.) to deduct certain expenses, such as repair and maintenance costs, Property tax (IBI) and local fees, community charges, insurance, and utilities or proportional depreciation of the property.

Affected taxpayers may, in principle, request the rectification of prior selfassessments and claim refunds of undue payments for the last four years (the statutory limitation period).

However, it must be noted that the judgment does not alter the applicable tax rate (currently 24% for non-EU residents) and the tax authorities may still appeal before the Supreme Court, so this doctrine is not yet final.

Caution is also advised because the only argument supporting the existing restriction was not addressed by the Court.

Article 64.1 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) allows Member States to maintain certain restrictions that were already in place as of 31 December 1993 December 31 concerning capital movements to or from third countries, where such movements

involve direct investments, including investments in real estate, as well as establishment, the provision of financial services, or the admission of securities to capital markets.

Consequently, the differential treatment between residents and nonresidents existed prior to 1994, and it relates to situations — including real-estate transactions that could qualify as direct investment — where such a restriction might still be compatible (though not necessarily) with EU law.

Therefore, we must remain cautious: the Audiencia Nacional did not address—because it was not raised—whether the rental property in question constitutes a direct investment, whose discriminatory tax treatment could be temporarily maintained under EU law.

Should the forthcoming appeal before the Supreme Court hinge upon the interpretation of an EU-law concept, it is plausible that the Supreme Court will refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for a preliminary ruling.

In conclusion, this ruling represents a significant step towards greater tax equality between EU and non-EU taxpayers in Spain.

It applies European principles and international treaties to eliminate a form of discrimination that had long been criticised by tax professionals and European bodies.

The decision also represents an opportunity for savings and refunds for non-residents renting out property in Spain — a brilliantly won battle, though many more remain to be fought in a tax system as voracious as Spain’s.

The Marbella Town Hall, through its Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, has presented a special recognition to González & Jacobson Arquitectura, led by architects Rodolfo Amieva Jacobson and Diego Macías Domínguez, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, in an institutional event held at the Cultural Centre Hospital Real de la Misericordia. The commemorative ceremony brought together institutional representatives, clients, and collaborators who have accompanied the studio throughout these three decades. The event was also attended by the Councillor for Urban Planning, José Eduardo Díaz Molina; the Director General of the Mayor’s Office, Mario Ruiz; the Director General of Projects and Infrastructures, Ignacio Díaz Rodríguez-Valdés; and the Deputy Mayor of San Pedro de Alcántara, Javier García.

Founded in 1995 with its first project, Elviria Hills —which remains one of the most renowned developments in the municipality— González & Jacobson Arquitectura is today part of Marbella’s living architectural memory. INTERVIEW WITH JORGE REYNARDUS

PRESERVING THE SOUL OF CUBAN ART IN EXILE

Mr. Reynardus, could you share how your journey as a Cuban art collector began?

My journey began with a visit by an artist to my place of business in New York City (NYC). I used to head an advertising agency that specialized in the burgeoning Latino community in the USA. Ruben Mendoza, a young artist from Cuba showed up looking for work. He had arrived in the city with a one year old son needing a heart surgery operation. We hired Ruben to work as one of our art directors. The word then got around that there was a Cuban-owned business in NYC that welcomed these new arrivals, and one by one these artists visited the office.

How does your collection reflect the experiences of these artists? These Cuban artists represent the famed generation of the 1980s and they are the focus of the collection. They left Cuba for ideological reasons as well as to forge a better life outside of the island.

Such diasporas of artists have only happened three times in history. The Bauhaus artists in World War II, and in 1949 when Chiang Kai-shek went to Formosa and many Chinese artists followed him.

My collection reflects their journey as immigrants with unique challenges. They were not allowed to represent Cuba in international competitions.. Their experiences are captured in the book “Artists in Purgatory” which I published in 2017. One anecdote I like to share is that during the Spanish Civil War many intellectuals and academics from Andalusia went on to

reside in Havana. And thirty years later the sons and daughters of those Andalusians became part of the artists of the generation of the 1980s.ility among qualified buyers in key luxury markets.

What does Cuban art represent to you on a personal and emotional level?

I am also an immigrant and I share these artists’ experiences personally and emotionally. We arrived in a foreign land without the benefit of communicating in our own language or understanding the nuances of the culture. As I got to know their respective stories it helped me reconnect with my Cuban roots. These artists have become a part of my extended family.

How do you choose which artists to include in your collection?

This has to do with how they fit in the historical parameters of Cuban art. My interest first focused on the generation of the 1980s and their mentors. However, after visiting Cuba for the first time since I left in 1961, I had an epiphany. In 2016 I visited the island to learn about the artists’ stories before they left Cuba. Soon I realized that many of the artists who stayed behind were just as wonderful as the ones that chose to leave the island. Today, I include in my collection those who stayed behind as well as new young artists that appeal to me.

Have you ever had a particularly emotional reaction to a specific piece?

In the words of William Kennedy in the foreword of the book: “There is exuberance in them, and an abundance of the baroque, many are avant-garde, full of fresh Caribbean color, risky form, and evidence of their Spanish and African roots. Cuba is still the muse, but it has been colored by the life experience of emigrant artists who for twenty years have found no place to which they artistically belong.” Of course, I react emotionally to different pieces. This varies with the iconography.

The figurative pieces are an obvious connection to my own story. The gamut runs from pop to surrealist and to conceptual. Since I tend to have a personal relationship with many of the artists I try to see the creation through their eyes. If I had to pick one piece it would be a landscape by Carlos R. Cardenas.

How has your own experience as a Cuban exile shaped the way you view and collect art?

Over the years my direct relationship with the artists in the collection has shaped the way I view and collect. I arrived as a Cuban exile with the same uncertainties, questions and challenges as these artists. I view and collect art as a means to leave behind a shared experience. The collection is an organic compilation of a story that needs to be told.

What challenges have you faced in building and curating such a personal and meaningful collection?

Where do I start? There are close to 90 artists in the collection. This means 90 different personalities, opinions, and so on. The challenge at times is getting the artists to listen to you and learn from your own experience. At the same time you need to listen to subject matter experts and have the humility and recognition that you are not an artist and thus don’t know what’s going through their minds. Personally, I don’t know what the future holds. How do we move forward?

Do you believe that art has the power to bridge political and cultural divides?

This is a complex question. In general, yes I believe this is possible. Yet, we are living in a world that seems to be moving in the wrong direction. Art has helped me navigate the divide between those who reside in Cuba and those who have left the island. Art is a great testimony of history and values

What is the most rewarding part of sharing your collection with the public?

I have had the opportunity to meet and connect with many people whom I wouldn’t have known otherwise. It is also a means to give back to the community and share one’s blessings with others who have not been as fortunate. By sharing the collection it also makes sure that this generation of artists is remembered and recognized.

What inspired the title of your book, “Artists in Purgatory”?

Since these artists in the collection left Cuba, they are neither allowed to participate as Cubans in international exhibitions by other countries, nor can they seek grants or other financial help in many cases. These artists are told that they are ineligible because they no longer represent Cuba. Thus, they live in a sort of purgatory.

What advice would you offer to budding art collectors?

Start slowly. Have a budget. Diversify. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Listen to experts. Teachers in art schools know who will make it.

Are there any contemporary artists you believe the world should be paying more attention to?

Ivonne Ferrer, born in Cuba in 1968, a graduate of San Alejandro Academy, and now living in Miami, Florida. There are numerous traits that emerge in her works, and they create a unique and surreal narrative through a variety of sources from popular culture. I love her work.

Yusto Giner Gallery presents The Weight of the Immaterial in Marbella, the first solo exhibition in Spain by Mexican artist Horacio Quiroz (Mexico City, 1977), curated by Victoria Rivers. The exhibition brings together a set of works that explore how the invisible influences the visible, addressing the relationship between body, identity, and spirituality from a posthumanist perspective. Quiroz reflects on contemporary hybridity and the dissolution of boundaries between the organic, the technological, and the spiritual. Through his works, the artist constructs bodies and forms that overflow the traditional limits of representation, giving rise to figures that inhabit an intermediate territory between the human, the digital, and the mythical. His creations evoke the intangible, giving density to what remains hidden and proposing a dialogue between painting, artificial intelligence, and spirituality.

With this exhibition, Yusto Giner continues its commitment to artistic practices that expand the boundaries of painting and invite us to rethink contemporaneity from innovative and critical perspectives. Horacio Quiroz’s rich pictorial representations of the human body unfold a universe of hybrid states and desires in motion.

With a previous career in international advertising, this self-taught painter began his artistic path in 2013 and has since developed work that moves between the beautiful and the grotesque, the utopian and the dystopian, the familiar and the unknown. Influenced by queer and ecological theories, Quiroz’s corporeal worlds reveal a cosmological awareness that expands the relationships between gender, identity, body, and environment.

He works with oil paint through a meticulous layering process, shaping each form with precision. His technique alternates between dense, textured passages and delicate glazes, showing a deep commitment to the materiality of painting.

His works, both highly detailed and fantastical, radiate a queer optimism paradoxically rooted in constant transformation. Based in Mexico City, Quiroz (b. 1977) earned his degree in Graphic Design from Universidad Iberoamericana. Three years after beginning his career as a painter, his work was selected for the prestigious XV Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial in Mexico. He quickly became known for his hallucinatory works that present queer representations of the body, non- binary understandings of gender, and dreamlike states.

Quiroz has exhibited internationally in institutions, galleries, and fairs across Europe, the United Kingdom, China, Korea, Mexico, Canada, Australia, and the United States. FROM “POSEIDON” TO THE ICONS OF MONACO, A TALE OF ART, MEMORY, AND SEA

Thanks to the initiative of gallerist Úrsula Salvador, Puerto Banús hosted this summer the internationally renowned artist Marcos Marín (São Paulo, September 12, 1967), one of the most recognizable names in contemporary optical art. His monumental sculpture “Poseidon” burst into the nautical landscape as both a nod to the myths that have shaped the coasts of southern Europe and a statement of intent: the Mediterranean can and should be read through a contemporary lens. The port presented the work as both an environmental awareness installation and an expression of seafaring pride. After its stay in Marbella, the piece now travels to Valencia and then to Nice, where it will be exhibited under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and the city’s mayor.

SALVADOR: A COSMOPOLITAN VISION WITH A MARBELLA SOUL

Although raised and resident for over 20 years in Miami and Palm Beach, where she ran her own gallery, Úrsula Salvador is Marbellí at heart. Since childhood she has spent every summer on the Costa del Sol, which has given her a deep connection to Marbella’s cultural and social fabric.

Renowned for her artistic intuition, she is a regular at international art fairs - from Basel to Miami, from Paris to Hong Kong - where she constantly travels in search of the next creator capable of defining a generation. Her trajectory has established her as a cultural mediator with a talent for building bridges between emerging artists and global stages.

With the arrival of “Poseidon” in Puerto Banús, Salvador not only presented a work of great aesthetic impact but also emphasized her commitment to positioning Marbella on the international contemporary art circuit, generating synergies between Mediterranean tradition and global avant-garde.

A PIANIST WHO FOUND HIS RHYTHM IN OPTICS

Marín’s path is unusual: he began as a virtuoso pianist, trained in France, and while working in Montmartre, came into contact with the great master Victor Vasarely. That encounter transformed his

perspective and definitively oriented him toward “Op” Art, a field in which he is now a leading reference.

Marín has turned portraiture and identity into a laboratory of perception: iconic faces - from Maria Callas to Madonna, from Sinatra to Alain Delon - are deconstructed into grids, vibrations, and minimal displacements that compel the viewer to “fine-tune their visual ear,” as if listening again to a familiar melody performed by a different orchestra.

A FAMILY NOTE: MÁLAGA ROOTS

Although the artist is Brazilian, his personal story connects to Málaga through his father’s lineage. His paternal roots add an intimate layer to his arrival on the Costa del Sol. This Andalusian heritage, together with his residence in Monaco and his international projection, draws an emotional triangle between São Paulo, Monaco, and Málaga that explains, in part, the natural way in which Marín inscribes his work into the cultural landscape of southern Spain.

“POSEIDON”:

MYTH, HORIZON, AND ECOLOGY

“Poseidon” was exhibited in Puerto Banús between April and late July 2025. This monumental sculpture, about four meters high, reinterprets the god of the seas through the artist’s optical grammar. The work evoked a Mediterranean that, in Antiquity, symbolically ended at the Pillars of Hercules - the Rock of Gibraltar and Mount Hacho - both visible on clear days from Puerto Banús.

The port highlighted the environmental awareness and call for care of the sea that accompanied the piece. In Banús, mythology intersected with the contemporary reality of the coast: a space of luxury and tourism that, thanks to Marín and Salvador, also became a stage for cultural reflection.

THE MONÉGASQUE LEGACY: GRACE, RAINIER, ALBERT

Marín’s relationship with the House of Grimaldi is an integral part of his career. In 2012, he presented at Art Monaco his monument to Princess Grace; the work later moved to Cap-Martin, to the Garden of Olives, in accordance with the wishes of H.S.H. Prince

Albert II of Monaco. More recently, in 2021, Albert II himself inaugurated Grace Forever at the Princess Grace Hospital, consolidating a dialogue between the artist and the memory of the actress and princess that now spans over a decade of work. That bond with Monaco also resonates deeply in Marbella: Puerto Banús was inaugurated in 1970 by Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Kelly, a historic moment still preserved in archives and newspapers.

ICONS RETURNING HOME: RAINIER AND GRACE IN 2026

Following the “Poseidon” exhibition, Salvador and Marín are planning for 2026 a large- scale installation in Puerto Banús honoring Rainier III and Princess Grace, the protagonists of the port’s 1970 inauguration. The project - which anticipates inviting Prince Albert - reflects the artist’s desire, supported by Úrsula Salvador, to activate the enclave’s historical memory with two monumental portrait-sculptures.

State of the Art: From “State of Grace” to the Andalusian Coast Marín’s exhibition power in Monaco has been particularly visible in recent years. In 2024, the “State of Grace” exhibition filled the gardens of the Monte-Carlo Casino with more than twenty monumental sculptures, confirming his ability to transform portraits into ephemeral architecture of light and movement. That same sensitivity is what he has now brought to the Costa del Sol, where “Poseidon” functioned as a prologue to future public interventions.

CRITICAL READING: PERCEPTION, IDENTITY, AND PUBLIC SPACE

Marín’s contribution to optical art can be read on three levels:

1. Perception: his work forces the viewer to “walk” the image.

2. Identity: by translating famous faces into geometric patterns, he places them into shared memory.

3. Public space: in large formats, his pieces become urban statements that activate plazas and viewpoints.

“Poseidon” condensed all three: it challenges the passerby with a vibrating form; it embodies an identity - that of the Mediterranean itself - in an optical syntax; and it made legible a space that, due to saturation, risked becoming invisible.

CODA: THE MEDITERRANEAN, ONCE AGAIN

In its journey through Mediterranean ports, “Poseidon” made clear what Marín’s work has long demonstrated: that images of the past can be read in the present when brought to the frontier of perception. And that heritage - from Rainier and Grace to the mythical memory of the sea - is a score open to new interpretations.

And in this process, the figure of Úrsula Salvador emerges as a catalyst: a cosmopolitan woman who, from her deep love for Marbella, has brought to the port one of the key names in contemporary optical art, reaffirming that the Costa del Sol can also be a world epicenter of art.

From television to community activism, the British journalist behind Marbella Now and Good Morning Spain turns visibility into purpose — building bridges, promoting inclusion, and giving a voice to Marbella’s international community.

British journalist Nicole King has been rooted in Spain since her youth and has made a name for herself as a presenter, journalist, and community connector. For over a decade, she has hosted Marbella Now on RTV Marbella, and with the English Edition, she brought international viewers on board. She is also the face of Good Morning Spain on 7TV Andalucía, the country’s only English-language morning show. But Nicole does more than just television. She builds bridges between cultures, advocates for mental health, and offers advice to brands looking to succeed in Spain.

Nicole, how did your career in journalism begin?

I’ve been in market research to introduce new brands into Spain for over four decades and saw that I could use this ability to connect the multinational local community via radio and television.

What motivates you to organize the United Nationalities of Marbella Summits?

I know what goes on behind the scenes from my many guests and this summit addresses the most relevant issues that came up throughout the year. I want to help create a local community where we all support one another and address the issues that often only affect us due to our expat status.

What do you value most about your work?

Connecting with people and having the opportunity to help them shine and implement meaningful projects that genuinely benefit the community. Visibility is important, but it must be used responsibly and purposefully.

THE ART OF LIVING WITHOUT FEAR

“Abu-Power,” now on view at Hotel El Fuerte and Es.Arte Gallery, is more than a pictorial series—it’s a movement that restores the symbolic power of maturity. In an age obsessed with stopping time, Marifé Núñez reminds us that true luxury is to live it fully.

In a world that worships youth as the only synonym for beauty, Spanish artist Marifé Núñez challenges stereotypes with irony and color. Her series “Abu-Power” (2024–2025) — currently exhibited at Es.Arte Gallery within Hotel El Fuerte Marbella — is a declaration of strength, humor, and freedom. A visual hymn to the power of mature femininity, it celebrates women who claim their right to keep enjoying, living, and, above all, shining. In her works, the protagonists surf, ride motorcycles, ski, or simply relax by the sea with a mojito in hand. They don’t hide their wrinkles; they wear them as medals of life. “My ‘grannies’ are symbols of energy, joy, and authenticity,” Núñez explains. “They don’t represent old age as a loss, but as a new opportunity for fulfillment.”

ART AS A MIRROR OF FREEDOM

Inspired by thinkers such as Anna Freixas and Ana Hardisson Rumeu, Núñez uses art to challenge ageism, a bias still deeply rooted in society. Far from the passive image often assigned to older women, her Abus — as she affectionately calls them — embody a radiant, stylish freedom. Her visual language is unmistakable: expressive faces, large eyes brimming with life, and a vibrant palette that balances humor with sophistication. Núñez also incorporates symbols of contemporary luxury — iconic handbags, designer swimwear, and oversized sunglasses — to playfully critique the culture of glamour. Her women don’t imitate fashion; they reinvent it through authenticity, merging elegance and liberation in a single gaze.

DIANA, HOLIDAY IN SPAIN: A TRIBUTE TO THE ETERNAL SUMMER

Among her newest works, “Diana, Holiday in Spain” stands out as a

tribute to British actress Diana Dors, who stayed at Hotel El Fuerte in the 1960s. With this piece, Marifé Núñez revives Marbella’s golden age, bringing its spirit of glamour and freedom into the present. The painting captures the essence of Abu-Power: confident, radiant women who embrace the sun and life without fear of time.

Each edition — numbered and hand-signed by the artist — combines depth, irony, and a touch of Mediterranean joie de vivre, where the classic and the contemporary meet effortlessly. “I wanted to capture the vibrant energy of that elegant 1960s Marbella,” says Núñez, “but reinterpreted through the eyes of today’s mature, powerful woman.”

The exhibition “Abu-Power” can currently be visited at Es.Arte Gallery and Hotel El Fuerte Marbella, in collaboration with the Fundación Fuerte. Ricky Reese, born in Buenos Aires, began his professional career in the 1980s as a photographer and traveled the world, capturing places, moments, and beings from a unique and personal perspective.

This vast experience in visual art provided him with the knowledge, sensitivity, and inspiration that he later channeled into his other great passion: sculpture.

He chose steel as his material, a challenge due to its complexity in transforming, uniting, and giving it an aesthetic finish, transforming a fragment of this noble material into a creative and emotional proposal. His tireless pursuit of aesthetics and beauty is reflected in the simplicity of his abstract, minimalist sculptures. They are the result of ideas that emerge from within him, creating figures and spaces that convey movement, sobriety, and elegance.

Each of his pieces is born from a process that he personally undertakes, from the initial conception to the final execution.

All of his works bear the mark of his hands, his decisions, his commitment, and his time.

His goal as an artist is not simply to create a piece to decorate a space, but rather to admire his work as a contemporary object that provokes thought, interpretation, and dialogue.

Daniel, ha impulsado la transformación de Estepona en un museo al aire libre. Museos Municipales, esculturas, murales y la Casa de las Tejerinas invitan a descubrir su esencia artística y andaluza de Estepona.

Estepona ha sido calificada como “Jardín de la Costa del Sol”, pero también tiene profundas raíces históricas. Daniel ¿Cuál considera que es el mayor tesoro patrimonial del municipio?

Es cierto que Estepona es conocida internacionalmente como el “Jardín de la Costa del Sol” por su belleza y su entorno natural, pero nuestro municipio también atesora un patrimonio histórico y cultural de enorme valor. Si tuviera que señalar un mayor tesoro patrimonial destacaría la riqueza arqueológica que nos conecta con las distintas civilizaciones que habitaron estas tierras y por su antigüedad, haría una mención especial a la metrópolis megalítica “LOS DÓLMENES DE COROMINAS”, con una antigüedad de más de 5.000 años.

¿Qué acciones está llevando a cabo el Ayuntamiento para proteger y poner en valor los restos arqueológicos hallados en la zona, como la Villa Romana de Las Torres o la necrópolis del Arroyo Vaquero?

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona está plenamente comprometido con la protección y difusión de su patrimonio histórico. En el caso de yacimientos como la Villa Romana de Las Torres o la necrópolis del Arroyo Vaquero, se están desarrollando diversas acciones que incluyen la conservación preventiva de los restos, la investigación arqueológica y la restauración de las piezas más significativas.

En los últimos años se ha apostado por embellecer el casco antiguo, ¿cómo se integra esa estética con la conservación del patrimonio histórico real de la ciudad?

Se ponen en valor los restos y museos integrados en la vida urbana, como la Torre Romana, el Castillo de San Luis, la Torre del Reloj y el Museo Arqueológico, abiertos a ciudadanos y visitantes para vivir y disfrutar el patrimonio en el centro histórico.

Muchos turistas visitan Estepona por sus playas y flores, ¿qué estrategia existe para que también descubran su riqueza histórica y arqueológica?

Para lograr que los turistas que llegan a Estepona no solo por sus playas y su belleza natural, sino también descubran su riqueza histórica y arqueológica, a través de promoción cultural y turística, como redes

sociales y páginas web oficiales, medios de comunicación locales, y a través de la Oficina de Turismo, situada en la Casa de las Tejerinas.

¿Qué papel juega la ciudadanía en la protección del patrimonio?

¿Hay iniciativas que involucren a los vecinos en el cuidado y difusión de la historia local?

La ciudadanía es clave en la protección del patrimonio cultural y natural, pues lo vive, disfruta y transmite. Su participación asegura no solo la conservación física, sino también el valor social y cultural mediante rutas, festividades y talleres que mantienen viva la identidad esteponera.

¿Cuáles son los próximos proyectos relacionados con el patrimonio histórico que verán la luz en Estepona? ¿Podría adelantarnos algo? Actualmente, Estepona está llevando a cabo un proyecto de modernización y ampliación de sus museos, buscando acercar la historia y la cultura a vecinos y turistas, como son el Museo Arqueológico y el Museo Etnográfico. Destacamos la labor del arqueólogo municipal, D. Ildefonso Navarro, encargado de la investigación, protección y difusión del patrimonio histórico, a la restauradora Dª Carmen Pérez, cuya dedicación garantiza la conservación y puesta en valor de los bienes culturales de nuestro municipio y al responsable del Archivo Histórico Municipal, D. Alfredo Galán por la valiosa labor que realiza en la preservación, custodia y difusión de nuestro patrimonio documental, como la Carta de Villazgo de 1729 la cual otorgó a Estepona el estatus de villa y la autonomía para gobernarse con ayuntamiento propio. Este documento marcó el inicio de su desarrollo urbano y económico, sentando las bases de su identidad como comunidad, fundamental para la memoria colectiva de nuestra comunidad.

Y en lo personal, ¿cómo nació en usted el amor por la historia y el patrimonio? ¿Hay algún rincón de Estepona que le emocione especialmente?

Desde niño siempre tuve una gran curiosidad por la historia del arte y la fortuna de contar con profesores que me inculcaron el amor por nuestro patrimonio histórico.

Quisiera agradecer al alcalde, D. José María García Urbano, por brindarme la oportunidad de gestionar esta obra tan ilusionante, en la que ha tenido como baluarte para recuperar la autoestima y el valor cultural de Estepona.

DAVID OLIVAS

CHEF OF BACK RESTAURANT

David Olivas, born in Úbeda (Jaén), where he began his training and professional life, has developed his career in Marbella. Perfectionist, demanding, creative, and with Andalusian roots as a constant source of inspiration, he has spent his career as head chef in Michelin-starred restaurants. In 2016, he opened Back, together with the renowned maître d’ and sommelier Fabián Villar, a restaurant that immediately captured the attention of the public, the press, and critics, and where he began to receive awards and recognition. In November 2023, Back earned its first Michelin star. In June 2025, also alongside Fabián Villar, he opened “Enea”, a casa de comidas (traditional eatery) located in Marbella’s Old Town.

Congratulations on the Michelin star. How has Back evolved from its beginnings to this recognition?

Back began conceptually as a tapas bar, with its counter and tables, where everything was casual and urban. Over time, it evolved into a gastrobar, then into a bistro, becoming today a fine dining restaurant, with everything that entails—both in service and in the kitchen.

What is the culinary philosophy that guides your cuisine at Back?

It’s based on an Andalusian, Mediterranean philosophy, rooted in the tradition of cold soups, fried dishes, and espetos (skewered grilled fish), taking all of that into the avant-garde.

How has receiving the Michelin star influenced the restaurant’s dynamic?

The dynamic had already been the same for a couple of years, since we were clear that the pursuit of excellence was our path. When we were awarded the star, we already had that rhythm well established.

What role does the tasting menu “Universo Andaluz” play in Back’s gastronomic experience?

It perfectly embodies our philosophy. It’s dedicated to Andalusian products and techniques that are so deeply ingrained in our work. It’s the best way to get to know what we do.

How important have training and prior experience been in your career as a chef?

My years of study gave me a solid foundation in cooking at all levels, both national and international. They also helped me understand a chef’s life. Fortunately, I’ve traveled to many countries—China, Japan, South America, the United States, Europe, and others—and discovered ingredients and products that have given me a much broader perspective. I’ve learned that cooking is freedom, and that’s what we try to express at Back.

How is your collaboration with your partner, sommelier Fabián Villar?

It’s based on teamwork and on the pursuit of evolution and excellence in a field that we’re both passionate about. We always try to find the best harmony—he with the wine, I with the dishes—so that the guest enjoys a complete experience.

What advice would you give to young chefs who aspire to earn a Michelin star?

I’d tell them not to become obsessed with this kind of recognition. They should focus more on their business and on the people around them. Consistency and hard work usually bring results. And most importantly: think about the economic sustainability of the restaurant. Without that foundation, no recognition is possible.

This summer you opened “Enea,” a casa de comidas located in Marbella’s Old Town. Tell us briefly what kind of dishes and menus we can expect there.

Enea is a completely different concept. It’s a casa de comidas where we try to recreate typical Andalusian and Mediterranean dishes in half-portion formats that encourage sharing, as is our custom. There’s the cellar area downstairs, designed like a tavern, where people enjoy tapas in a more informal way, and upstairs there’s a conditioned terrace that brings to life a 21st-century casa de comidas, serving fried dishes, baked fish, and grilled meats.

What future projects do you have for Back and Enea?

For now, we’re going to refine Enea, since its opening took place right in the middle of summer. Now we want to stabilize things and improve all those details that only time and experience reveal.

From my perspective, what makes it unique is the fusion of its classic, elegant style with the warmth of the team who work here—a warmth that I find unparalleled. And, as I’ve often heard our director Jorge Manzur say since I joined, luxury resides in people—the ones capable of moving hearts and creating unforgettable moments.

What has been the most inspiring challenge you’ve faced organizing an event here?

For me, the greatest challenge has been learning from my colleagues at the hotel. Each and every one of them is an incredible professional and an amazing person, and they have been a constant source of inspiration for me.

Could you share an unforgettable anecdote from the resort? Absolutely! Some might expect a grand anecdote, but the most unforgettable moment was my very first event at the hotel—it happened to coincide with my birthday. I was a bundle of nerves, worried that everything would go perfectly. I thought my team would feel the same, but I found them calm, prepared to support me and follow my lead. Even the General Manager was there with everyone! I had never felt so welcomed, and I will always be grateful for what they did for me.

What role do art and the resort’s history play in event planning?

On every visit, I strive to convey both the values of Anantara, Minor Hotels’ luxury brand, and the unique characteristics of the hotel, which, as you mentioned, houses truly significant history and artwork. That is precisely what many guests hope to encounter when hosting their events here.

What personal values do you bring to your relationships with clients and colleagues?

They are the values instilled in me by my parents, my two pillars. First is honesty—always presenting myself as I truly am, whether with clients or colleagues. Then comes respect for others, which I consider fundamental. And finally, acting in the way I would hope others would act toward me—leading by example before asking anything, which is essential to me.

What does being part of a brand like Anantara mean to you?

It is both an opportunity and a privilege. Anantara’s values align closely with my own worldview—not only in terms of morality and ethics, which I consider fundamental—but also in the pursuit of experiences for guests that respect and collaborate with the local environment. Seeing our clients explore Ronda or savoring the regional products in our restaurants fills me with pride in working here.

Where do you see Álvaro in a few years?

If only someone could answer that! It’s difficult, but I believe that wherever I am, I hope to always be surrounded by a team as genuinely human as the one I have now. I envision myself in the luxury sector, right here in my beloved Andalucia.

Finally, what is your life philosophy in a world of constant change and diversity?

It is rooted in empathy and the belief that knowledge takes no space. Understanding others, taking the time to listen to their ideas, thoughts, fears, or joys, and then reflecting on them while remaining compassionate—that is the essence. I believe that being a good person, my singular yet abstract goal, fundamentally relies on this. It is a steady anchor in a world that is a tide of constant movement.

A HISTORY OF CARE AND INNOVATION

Helicópteros Sanitarios was born in Marbella in 1988, at a time when urgent medical care along the Costa del Sol was limited and often too slow to save lives. Back then, the N-340 coastal road between Sotogrande and Málaga was notorious for serious accidents. Tragically, more than 38% of people in need of urgent medical assistance died before reaching hospital due to long delays and a lack of professional on-site care. Patients suffering from critical illnesses faced the same risks.

It was in this context that a young entrepreneur, María José Cañete, just 23 years old, had the vision and determination to change the future of healthcare in the region. She founded Helicópteros Sanitarios, the very first private emergency medical service of its kind in Spain, with the mission of saving lives by bringing hospital-level care directly to patients, wherever they might be.

His father undoubtedly served as a role model in terms of integrity, education and public service. This legacy partly explains why, for Iván, politics is a duty rather than a personal ambition.

The name ‘Atenea’ was not chosen at random; it was a deliberated choice, as the goddess Athena is a symbol of thought, determination and strategy. THE ESSENCE OF TALENT LA ESENCIA DEL TALENTO

Jacqueline Bisset belongs to that category of actresses who have managed to build a solid career without resorting to media noise or the excesses of Hollywood. She was born in Surrey, England, in 1944, into a cultured and cosmopolitan family.

Cuando el 8 de enero de 1935 nació Elvis Aaron Presley en Tupelo (Mississippi), Jacqueline Bisset pertenece a esa categoría de actrices que han sabido labrarse una sólida carrera sin recurrir al ruido mediático ni a los excesos de Hollywood. Nació en el condado de Surrey (Inglaterra) en 1944, en el seno de una familia culta y cosmopolita.

She studied at the Lycée Français in London and took ballet lessons, but at 15 she had to accompany her mother, who was suffering from multiple sclerosis, after her parents divorced. In her spare time, she took acting classes and worked as a model.

STEP BY STEP

In the mid-1960s, Bisset made her debut in British productions. Opportunities soon followed through small roles in acclaimed films, such as Two for the Road with Audrey Hepburn. Although her appearances were brief, they were enough for her face to become recognized. Her breakthrough came in 1968, a decisive year in her career, when she shared the screen with Steve McQueen in Bullitt and Frank Sinatra in The Detective. It was the prelude to what the 1970s would bring, confirming that Bisset was destined to become one of the defining figures of her generation. Airport was one of the biggest box-office successes of the era, and soon after François Truffaut directed her in Day for Night, where her natural presence caught the attention of European filmmakers.

THE WORLD’S MOST ATTRACTIVE WOMAN

The film that made her internationally famous was The Deep in 1977. Starring alongside

Robert Shaw and Nick Nolte, Newsweek named her “the most beautiful actress of all time.” The film was a box-office triumph, and the images of Bisset swimming in nothing but a T-shirt were forever etched into the collective memory. Jacqueline, however, never felt comfortable with the exploitation of her image. Far from capitalizing on the stir the scene caused, she made it clear she wanted to be valued for her work, not reduced to a pretty face. This stand was a testament to her strong and independent character and her determination not to be swept up by Hollywood’s superficial side. From then on, instead of settling for easy roles, she chose projects that allowed her to grow as an actress. In Rich and Famous, directed by George Cukor, she played a role of great emotional depth, while in Under the Volcano with Albert Finney, she took on one of the most complex performances of her career, earning a Golden Globe nomination.

A SELF-MADE ACTRESS

Television also gave her important professional opportunities. Recognition came in 2013, when she won the Golden Globe for her role in the miniseries Dancing on the Edge. That night, she delivered one of the ceremony’s most memorable moments. Her speech, broken by emotion and tinged with humor, revealed an

authentic woman, without artifice, who had built a successful career while staying true to herself.

TRUE TO HER ESSENCE

In 2010, Bisset became the face of an American cosmetics brand for the launch of an anti-aging treatment. “I don’t hide my age; my skin does,” was the campaign’s slogan. That same year, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in France, a recognition that underscored the admiration she had long inspired in European audiences. Today, at 80, Jacqueline Bisset leads an active life. Her greatest achievement has been maintaining balance between Europe and the United States, between commercial cinema and more alternative projects—all without ever abandoning her essence. Estudió en el Liceo Francés de Londres y dio clases de ballet, pero a los 15 años tuvo que acompañar a su madre, enferma de esclerosis múltiple, después de que sus padres se divorciaran. En sus ratos libres daba clases de interpretación y trabajaba como modelo.

PELDAÑO A PELDAÑO

A mediados de los años 60, Bisset debutó en producciones británicas. Las oportunidades no tardaron en llegar a través de pequeños

papeles en películas de renombre, como Dos en la carretera, junto a Audrey Hepburn. Aunque sus apariciones eran breves fueron suficientes para que su rostro empezara a ser reconocido.

Lejos de aprovechar el revuelo que la escena ocasionaba, dejó claro que quería ser valorada por su trabajo y no reducida a ser una cara bonita. Este golpe en la mesa no era más que una demostración de su carácter, fuerte e independiente, y su determinación a no dejarse arrastrar por el lado más superficial de Hollywood. Cecilia Castillo’s photographs are like paintings: delicate, detailed, and poetic – a girl with a rabbit, a woman surrounded by flowers and clouds, an African mother with her child. “A portrait always reflects the inner world of a person,” she says.

Formerly a psychologist in Argentina for over 30 years, Castillo devoted herself fully to photography after retirement, guided by Russian mentor Amina Donskaya. Her portraits are quiet confessions, inviting a subtle dialogue: one observes, and is observed. “The model’s mood and my own shape the image. Every detail tells a story.”

Thus, her photographs reveal not merely faces, but entire worlds – frozen moments suspended between memory, emotion, and hope. Cecilia Castillo succeeds in transforming transience into eternity, as if each press of her camera’s shutter were an act of alchemy.

CENA GALA AECC MARBELLA AT LA FINCA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN

The Marbella Local Chapter, chaired by Santiago Gómez-Villares, celebrated a new milestone in both attendance and fundraising, surpassing €250,000 in proceeds. As in previous years, all funds will go directly toward sustaining the free programs and services the association provides for cancer patients and their families.

The Gala also served as the stage for the presentation of the “The Fighter” Award, created by David Marshall, which was given to actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta “for his testimony, which has significantly contributed to breaking stigmas, highlighting the importance of bone marrow donation, showing the reality of the disease, and offering hope to those going through similar situations.”

The highlight of the evening was a spectacular drone show designed by Umiles, Spain’s leading provider of this service, which the organization had kept as a surprise to mark its 40th anniversary and thank the city of Marbella.

During the evening, Spain’s largest charity raffle once again took place, surpassing 300 prizes thanks to the collaboration of more than 200 companies.

The Gala was hosted once again by Eva Ruiz and Poty Castillo, with performances by Modestia Aparte, singer Conchita, DJ Kike Supermix, illusionist Jorge Blass, and magician Yunke. As tradition dictates, the event also featured the raffle of a jewelry chest donated by Gómez & Molina Joyeros.

CHARITY GALA AT PUENTE ROMANO

Once again, Puente Romano Marbella set the stage for the World Vision 2025 Charity Gala, held in the resort’s iconic Tennis Club. This annual event, dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities across the globe, placed special focus on Ethiopia and its efforts to build long-term food security through land restoration and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, with the aim of improving child nutrition and fostering sustainable livelihoods.
