The names published in this commencement program include all students who earned a doctorate, educational specialist, master’s or baccalaureate degree fall terms 2025 or winter terms 2026, and any student who applied for a degree for spring terms 2026 or summer terms 2026 by the posted deadline.
Participation in commencement and inclusion in the commencement program do not guarantee official granting of a degree. The Graduate Programs Office (doctorate, educational specialist, master’s) and the Records and Registration Office (baccalaureate) verify completion of all coursework before a degree is conferred. The official document verifying degree completion is the official Eastern Washington University transcript.

In 1882, the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy opened its doors to more than 200 enrolling students. A generous contribution of $10,000 from a wealthy transportation industrialist had at last fulfilled the dreams of Cheney citizens for an institute of higher learning in their community.
The academy became the State Normal School at Cheney in 1889, the same year in which Washington was given its statehood. The school was proudly designated as an institution “for the purpose of instruction of persons, both male and female, in the art of teaching the various branches that pertain to a good common school.”
By the time it became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937, Eastern was already a fully accredited four-year degree-granting institution, offering majors in numerous subjects.
The campus grew rapidly in size and program offerings in the decades following World War II. In 1961, the name was again changed, this time to Eastern Washington State College. It was increasingly evident that the region needed professionals in many fields; in response, a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs were added. Finally, in 1977, the name was changed to Eastern Washington University by the state legislature.
As a regional university, Eastern is charged with the special responsibility of meeting the undergraduate and graduate educational needs of the region’s people.
To that end, program areas have grown and been redefined as the needs of the Inland Northwest have grown and changed. Master’s programs have been added to meet the need for graduate-level education, and individual programs and schools have increasingly been granted accreditation by their respective oversight organizations as those programs and schools have grown and matured.
Today, Eastern students represent nearly every state in the union and more than 40 foreign countries. More than 100 different academic majors are available, offering students a wide variety of career-path options.
Nearly 600 full-time and adjunct faculty teach on the Cheney campus and at several locations throughout the state. Three-quarters of Eastern’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate degrees. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, Eastern continues to stress small classes, personalized instruction and individual attention.
Perhaps even more significant than Eastern’s steady advancement during the past 135 years is the university’s expanded regional role and its evolving goals, objectives and vision of its future.
In the past decade, Eastern Washington University has become a major force in the state and the Pacific Northwest, not only in the education of more than 10,000 students each year, but in the civic, cultural, scientific and economic development of the state and region.

University Mace
The tradition of a ceremonial mace for academic institutions goes back to medieval times. Adapted in form from the ancient battle weapon used by knights, the ceremonial mace symbolized the authority of regal personages, city or shire ruling bodies and chief officers of chartered institutions.
Originally representing vested authority during all official meetings, it eventually came to be connected mainly with formal ceremonies. In academic institutions, this is usually in conjunction with an academic procession, where the mace is carried at the head of the line of march or just before the platform party.
The form of the ceremonial mace has remained fairly consistent over the centuries. Design often reflects the period of creation, especially in the elaboration of ornamentation. Gold, silver and dark wood are traditional materials.
Eastern’s mace, commissioned as a gift during the centennial year to the university by former and present members of the EWU Board of Trustees, was created by artist-craftsman Clifford Gaynard after a region-wide design competition. Its planished silver head in flowing cuplike form carries the university seal. The dark rosewood shaft with upper and medial gold-plated bosses is gently curved into the terminal silver cap at the bottom.
Although the modern design departs from the traditional straight and elaborately ornamented pattern, it retains a full effect of balance, dignity and decorum, while capturing the flowing lines typical of the eastern Washington landscape.
A permanent display case for the Eastern Washington University mace is located in the Office of the President.
Academic Regalia
The regalia worn for formal academic ceremonies such as commencements are patterned after the gowns and hoods worn regularly in the Middle Ages by scholars for warmth in unheated buildings and as distinguishing dress denoting their place in society.
A great variety of designs and colors developed over the years in the costumes worn at different universities. Since 1895 in the United States, a uniform intercollegiate code of style and colors has been adhered to by most institutions.
In accordance with this code, most academic gowns are black, although some universities permit other solid colors. Occasionally, the robe color may indicate a professional distinction, such as deep purple for law or scarlet for ecclesiastical honors. Adaptations of the academic costume for high schools have sometimes used colors other than black for purely decorative purposes. Sometimes a distinguishing device on the robe or cap indicates an individual honor or a special occasion.
The baccalaureate gown is of simple cut with full, somewhat pointed sleeves. The front is closed and often no hood is worn with this gown. The mortar board head covering originated in ancient Greece, symbolizing the
commitment of the scholar to a life of building. It has either a plain black tassel or one of a color indicating the subject area of the degree. The custom of shifting the cap’s tassel from right to left at the time of awarding the degree is used in lieu of investing each candidate with the bachelor’s hood.
The master’s gown is similar to the bachelor’s gown, except that the sleeves are fuller, cut square with a halfcircle at the bottom and sometimes worn with the arms through a horizontal slit at elbow level.
The doctoral robe is ampler in cut with a full bellshaped sleeve, velvet panel edging in the front and three velvet stripes on each sleeve. The velvet trim may be black or in the color appropriate to the degree. The mortar board tassel for the doctorate is gold. Some American and many foreign universities use cap forms other than the mortar board, ranging from a soft velvet beret to more elaborate fringed styles, each of which has its own historical tradition.
Hoods worn over the gowns have a velvet edging, usually in a color indicating the specific degree and a lining which is partially turned out to show the colors of the college or university which granted the degree.

Jess Walter is the award-winning, best-selling author of eight novels, two books of short stories and one nonfiction book. His work has been translated into 34 languages, and his fiction has been selected three times for Best American Short Stories, as well as the O. Henry Prize, the Pushcart Prize, Best American Nonrequired Reading and Best American Mystery and Suspense. His stories, essays, criticism and journalism have appeared in, Harper's, Esquire, Playboy, McSweeney's, Tin House, Ploughshares, the New York Times, the Washington Post and many others.
After graduating from EWU in 1987 with a BA in Journalism, Walter began his writing career as a reporter for his hometown newspaper, The Spokesman-Review. He was a finalist for the 1992 Pulitzer Prize as part of a team covering the shootout and standoff at Ruby Ridge, in Northern Idaho. This became the subject of Walter's first book, Every Knee Shall Bow, in 1995. He has also worked as a screenwriter and has taught graduate creative writing at the University of Iowa, Pacific University, Eastern Washington University and Pacific Lutheran University.
Walter was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2006 for The Zero, and won the 2005 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Citizen Vince. He has twice won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, for The Zero and We Live in Water, won the Washington State Book Award for The Cold Millions, and was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize (The Zero) and the PEN/USA Award in both fiction (The Zero) and nonfiction (Every Knee Shall Bow). His novel Beautiful Ruins was a #1 New York Times bestseller and spent more than a year on the bestseller list. It was also Esquire's Book of the Year and NPR Fresh Air's Novel of the Year. Faculty Emeriti Recognition
Arthur “Art” DiMarco served as Director of the Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) EWU/UW program of the University of Washington, School of Dentistry, from 20082025. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Dickinson College and a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) from the Medical University of South Carolina, He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the dental honor society and is an honorary member of Sigma Phi Alpha, the dental hygiene honor society. Prior to his association with RIDE, he was didactic faculty and lead supervising dentist in EWU’s Dental Hygiene Department, attaining full-tenure status in 2008.
He continued his service to EWU, teaching dental hygiene and dental students throughout the period. In addition to having taught over more than two decades for Dental Hygiene and RIDE, he was engaged in private practice for 25 years. He taught and continues to teach dental professionals at regional, national, and international conferences, while publishing upwards of 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, and is co-author of a leading local anesthesia text, used by both UW and EWU, as well as many programs around North America and the world. It has the distinction of being the first local anesthesia text to be published in China.
He remains an active member of the American Dental Association, the Washington State Dental Association, the Spokane District Dental Society, and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and serves as a member of the Continuing Education Committee for two widely distributed dental journals.
He is still teaching part time, including at conferences, but he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and daughter - hiking, golfing, following his favorite teams, and less aggressive skiing per his agreement with the orthopedic surgeon.
Brian Houser
Dr. Brian Houser came to EWU in the Fall of 1990, directly upon graduation from the University of Washington with a PhD in Physics. He continued for several years with his research in X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In 1995 he took the opportunity to teach the physics of medical imaging to radiology residents at Sacred Heart Medical Center. This soon supplanted his research activity, and over the decades provided various examples of physics applications to better engage students in introductory physics – particularly the 1312-3 series.
Dr. Houser was also active in regional and national meetings dedicated to improvements in physics pedagogy, attending and often presenting. These experiences improved both student satisfaction and student performance. He was heavily involved in revisions of the Physics laboratory curriculum, and entirely responsible for the content of the physics laboratories beyond the introductory series.
Dr. Houser was also active in the UFE, serving for several years as VP for Labor Management. He was also active in the Faculty Organization, as senator from Physics as well as on the Library Affairs Council (as chair) and on the General Education Committee. More recently he helped set up events for Spooky Science.
Outside of the professional arena, Dr. Houser was a member of a local bicycle-racing team, winning a few local and regional races. He also resumed playing tuba in 2012 and subsequently performed with cellist John Marshal twice on EWU’s Music Department’s Wednesday Convocations. Two years ago he accepted an invitation to take up bass trombone to help out the Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra, and after six concerts has yet to wear out his welcome.
In retirement he expects to continue musical interests, recreational (long distance) bike riding, and resume writing fiction.
Natalie Kusz
Faculty Emeriti Recognition
Natalie Kusz’s career at EWU spanned 24 years, from 2001 to 2025, and was spent serving the English Department’s program in Creative Writing. She taught primarily Creative Nonfiction Prose to both undergraduate and graduate students, and she also ran, for much of her tenure, the Writers in the Community practicum, in which graduate students brought creative writing to underserved community venues such as women’s shelters, correctional facilities, rehab centers, and schools. She was committed to her teaching and took special pride in her graduate thesis advisees, many of whom went on to publish books and shorter works in periodicals.
Her efforts in university service most often focused on committees that bettered individual people’s lives. She served on the selection committee for student scholarships as well as the committee to award professional leave and grants for faculty summer projects, and she worked with other creative writing professors to secure funding and teaching positions for incoming graduate students. In her months post-retirement she has continued to be in contact with previous learners, celebrating their literary victories and the projects they currently pursue.
Dale Lindekugel
Dr. Lindekugel grew up in a small town on the northern plains and is a proud product of public education from first grade through the Ph.D. He came to EWU during the Reagan administration and is thankful for so many years of being able to do something he enjoys so much for a living.
While at EWU Dr. Lindekugel has been active in the Senate/Council/Committee structure including serving as President of the Faculty Organization in 1999 and leading a subsequent strategic planning process for the university. He served three terms as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Justice Studies and led the process of transitioning the Criminal Justice major into the social and behavioral sciences, providing it with a multidisciplinary foundation while maintaining its professional applications.
Most importantly Dr. Lindekugel has spent his career focusing on teaching and serving students. He earned the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award and was nominated for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education U.S. Professor of the Year (sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation) in the 90's. Unfortunately, his acceptance speech for the CASE award wasn't needed. Although he believes his greatest professional accomplishments are the seemingly small, everyday contributions to the academic experiences of the thousands of students he has been privileged to serve in his 40+ years at EWU.
Dr. Lindekugel is an avid motorcyclist and is a firm believer that a day on the bike is a day well spent. He also enjoys bicycling, golf and birding. He is looking forward spending time with family and friends and to many more happy years with his beautiful wife, Ingrid.
Vincent Pascal
Faculty Emeriti Recognition
Dr. Vincent Pascal served as Professor of Marketing at Eastern Washington University from 2001 to 2025, completing a distinguished 24-year career defined by excellence, leadership, and lasting impact. A respected scholar and dedicated educator, he became a cornerstone of the Business School, recognized for his expertise in marketing and his unwavering commitment to student success.
Dr. Pascal’s professional journey reflects a breadth of experience. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army for 16 years. Following his military service, he worked as a financial advisor and information systems officer before earning his MBA from Gonzaga University and his Ph.D. from Washington State University.
His research focused on entrepreneurial marketing, SME performance, and consumer behavior, particularly the role of nostalgia. His work has been published in leading journals, including Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, and Journal of Strategic Marketing, and was recognized with the Gerald E. Hills Best Paper Award in 2024.
Dr. Pascal was admired for his inspiring teaching and mentorship. He taught marketing courses and guided hundreds of student-led consulting projects for local businesses and nonprofit organizations, strengthening the University’s connection to the community.
His leadership and service left an enduring mark on the College. As Co-Chair of the School of Business and in multiple leadership roles, Dr. Pascal helped shape the School’s direction through a collaborative and inclusive approach. He fostered a collegial culture grounded in trust and shared purpose, mentored junior faculty, and served as a thoughtful advocate for faculty and students. He also represented the College with distinction, strengthening ties with the business community and expanding opportunities for engagement and partnership.
Dr. Pascal’s legacy is one of excellence, service, and enduring impact on his students, his colleagues, and the University he so faithfully served.
Andrew
Plamondon
Professor Andrew Plamondon has served in the music program at EWU for over 25 years, teaching applied trumpet, the Concert Jazz Orchestra, jazz improvisation, brass pedagogy, brass techniques and a variety of other music courses and ensembles. He is a very active adjudicator, clinician, and guest artist at music festivals, colleges, and high schools throughout the US and Canada. He also has an active private teaching studio for students of all levels.
For well over 30 years he has been a member and soloist with the Spokane Symphony, Spokane Jazz Orchestra, Spokane Civic Theater, and many other regional ensembles in a wide variety of musical styles. He has toured with Mannheim Steamroller, and also performs with many touring Broadway show productions, and eclectic groups like Soul Proprietor, Zonky band, Desafinado, the Swingin’ Vinos, and many others. He has performed with many of the top music artists of nearly every musical genre including Diana Krall, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin, the Moody Blues, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Ben Folds, Yo Yo Ma, Thomas Hampson, and Doc Severinsen just to name a few. He is also a featured soloist on recordings by Clarion, Sierra music, and numerous others.

Faculty Emeriti Recognition
Robert (Lance) Potter
Lance Potter worked at EWU from September 2014 through December 2025 following an eclectic life in education, law, and business. He was the director of the Educational Leadership Program from 2014-2019 working to revise and modernize the program, as well as re-establish a master’s of education in educational leadership. Lance co-founded the Transition to Teaching Program (T2T), which has helped prepare teachers in rural areas especially by bringing the program to them in an alternate route format. Focused on diversifying the workforce, T2T has prepared over 150 educators to serve in rural and hard to staff schools.
Dr. Potter also co-founded an Outdoor Environmental Education Program in cooperation with the Lands Council, Friends of Fish and Wildlife at Turnbull Wildlife Refuge, and Cheney Middle School. This program provides opportunities for 7th graders to plant trees in riparian areas in the fall and test water quality in the spring.
This innovative program has given about 1,000 students outdoor experiential experiences and planted over 3,000 trees in the Cheney/Marshall Creek area. Dr. Potter served the university by serving on the University Budget Committee and later the University Budget Planning Committee. Finally, Lance labored as chair/director of the School of Education for two years, an experience that drove him into retirement.
Susan Ruby
Susan Ruby, PhD, joined the EWU Psychology Department in 2005 as an assistant professor and later directed the School Psychology Program (2008–2021). She led the effort for legislative approval of EWU’s Educational Specialist degree in 2011 and helped EWU become the first online program accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) in 2021. She was Associate Dean for CALE (2015-2017) and coordinated the PESB accreditation for all educator programs.
A Nationally Certified School Psychologist, Ruby practiced in five states before joining EWU. She served as president of the Washington State Association of School Psychologists (2012–2014), Washington NASP Delegate (2019–2022), and on the NASP 2020 Graduate Preparation Standards writing team.
In response to post-COVID mental health needs, Ruby codeveloped the Social and Emotional Learning for Educational Equity (SEL-EE) undergraduate and graduate certificate programs. Since 2015, she has provided NASP PREPaRE Crisis Prevention and Response training to school districts across the state and region.
Ruby has dedicated her career to preparing school psychologists for preventive and intervention-oriented practice in K-12 schools. She has partnered with numerous districts and agencies to assist with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) implementation. Her leadership in this area is widely recognized across the state and region. She has served on multiple state advisory and writing teams, most recently on the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) Cadre (20192021), writing team for statewide guidance, and member of the Washington Administrators Improving MTSS (AIMS) project.
Most importantly, Ruby cherished working with and advising students, both undergraduates and graduates. She was a McNair mentor and supervised numerous student research projects and applied experiences. Many school psychologists and special education administrators in Washington began their training under Ruby and continue to improve outcomes for students and communities—a legacy she values most.
Trustees’ Medal Award
The Trustees’ Medal Award is the university’s highest form of recognition for faculty achievement. Each year since 1978, the award has honored teaching excellence, significant contributions to scholarship and research,
Carmen Nezat
Carmen Ann Nezat, PhD, a professor of geosciences and environmental science at Eastern Washington University, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Trustees’ Medal.
Nezat, who holds a doctorate in geological sciences, was selected based on multiple nomination letters submitted by faculty, staff and former students.
Colleagues praised her as a gifted environmental scientist who provides students with hands-on experience researching concentrations of toxic metals in soil, water and air. This field is increasingly important as these contaminants are linked to heightened risks of cognitive defects, cancer and kidney disease.
Camille McNeeley, a professor of biology, says Nezat excels at engaging community partners while mentoring dozens of students in rigorous laboratory techniques.
"These students have gone on to use their strong technical skills in a variety of federal, state, local and tribal management agencies, as well as environmental consulting groups," McNeeley notes in her nomination letter, adding that Nezat’s high standards are reflected in the professional success of her mentees.
Among those mentees is Christa Riley, a 2017 graduate with bachelor’s degrees in environmental science and geology. Riley credits a research project and subsequent paper published in Applied Geochemistry for opening professional doors.
"This work set the foundation for my current role as a project manager for Spokane County Stormwater Utility," says Riley, who now works on stormwater treatment, including policy and large-scale infrastructure.
"Most students do not have the opportunity to work on a research project and co-author a paper in their undergraduate studies,” Riley says.
and accomplishments in the development of academic programs and curriculums. The award consists of a silver medallion and a $1,500 cash prize from the EWU Foundation.
Since joining EWU as an assistant professor in 2007, Nezat has risen to the rank of full professor and served as the director of the interdisciplinary Environmental Science Program. Throughout her career, she has authored dozens of research papers and secured numerous successful grant awards.
Nezat currently serves as the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation grant of more than $750,000. The funding covered the cost of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), accessory equipment, consumables, and a technician. Some of the research so far involves plants, lichens and contaminated soils.
The SEM is also used by multiple EWU departments and community partners, including the U.S. Geological Survey, and for K-12 outreach. The microscope also has the potential to be utilized by the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab.
Nigel Davies, instructional technician for geosciences, highlighted Nezat’s diverse, real-world research that examined the Spokane River and its watershed, impacted vegetation in riverbanks and on the Palouse prairie, water chemistry at Mount St. Helens, calcium concentration in Washington lakes (invasive mussel studies), and airborne particulate pollution.
"All of this work is conducted alongside EWU students — primarily undergraduates — providing them with handson experience and preparing them to make meaningful contributions to environmental science," Davies says.
Former student Ted M. Uecker, now a hydrogeologist and cleanup project manager for the Washington State Department of Ecology, recalls working with Nezat to analyze heavy metals in Spokane-area soil and surface water. Uecker presented this research at the 2014 Geological Society of America conference before co-authoring a 2017 publication in Applied Geosciences.
"I truly believe I would not be where I am in my career without Dr. Nezat’s guidance," Uecker says. "I believe she is deserving of all accolades for her past, current and future mentorship of students at EWU.”
Distinguished Service Awards
The Distinguished Service Awards are given each year to recognize exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the university. Letters of nomination and support are reviewed by the University Medals and Awards Committee.
Rocio Rangel Administrative Exempt
Rocio Rangel, director of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), has been named the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Service Award for Exempt Employees in recognition of her leadership, innovation and commitment to student success.
Rangel, who has led CAMP for the past four years, was nominated based on her exceptional contributions in financial management, staffing, program development and student support.
“Rocio has demonstrated consistent excellence. Her proactive, strengths-based approach and commitment to students make her an invaluable member of the team,” a letter of nomination stated.
Under Rangel’s direction, CAMP improved efficiency while simultaneously enhancing services for first-generation and migrant students. She successfully managed the program’s annual budget, ensuring funds were strategically used to support student stipends and professional development for staff.
Her financial stewardship has allowed CAMP to expand its impact while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Recently, when the federal government discontinued funding for CAMP programs throughout the country, Rangel was instrumental in helping to secure funding from the Krumble Foundation to ensure the program can continue to serve students for the next five years.
Rangel introduced an innovative staffing model that replaced the recruiter position with a second advisor, allowing for more direct student engagement and improved program outcomes. The change streamlined operations and strengthened the program’s capacity to serve students more effectively.
Her emphasis on communication led to a dramatic reduction in students facing financial holds during registration. Rangel accomplished this by creating bilingual outreach materials and a structured communication plan to ensure that students clearly understood financial aid processes and deadlines.
Perhaps Rangel’s most remarkable accomplishment came during the 2024-2025 academic year, when she and her team guided students and families through the challenges and inconsistencies of the new FAFSA process.
Through personalized support and strong relationships with Spanish-speaking parents, CAMP overcame those obstacles to achieve a 100% FAFSA submission rate among first-year students – something the team has accomplished every year since 2020.
The award includes the Distinguished Service Award medallion and a check for $1,000. These awards were presented at the University Family Thanksgiving reception in November 2025.
Cory Ulrich Classified Staff
Cory Ulrich, math lab and placement coordinator, has become a transformative force for student success in mathematics. Her leadership, innovation and unwavering commitment to helping students have earned her the 2025 Distinguished Service Award for Classified Staff.
Ulrich received multiple nominations crediting her with making math more accessible and affordable while aligning students’ skills with the right courses.
“Cory continuously monitors placement data to ensure students are set up for success,” a nominator said.
Ulrich manages math tutoring labs in Kingston and Monroe halls that operate seven to eight hours daily and serve hundreds of students across many math courses. She recruits, trains and supervises student tutors, continually looking for ways to create a sense of belonging both in the lab and through communitybuilding activities.
Her leadership is credited for creating a welcoming, highfunctioning learning environment.
Going above and beyond her regular duties, Ulrich also seeks funding to improve the labs. She secured funding from the Eagle Grants Program as well as a Board of Trustees Diversity Grant to help cover costs for improved services, materials and outreach.
A student who works for Ulrich as a math tutor said she is extremely knowledgeable in all relevant math concepts and knows how to explain topics in a way that is understandable based on each student’s skill level.
“She’s not only sitting in her office keeping the bureaucratic seams of higher education from bursting, but – much to my astonishment – manages to be on the ground floor with the people she supervises, providing a helping hand,” the student wrote.
Ulrich sets the tone for her employees by modeling what a supportive, respectful and professional environment should look like, providing mentorship and hosting meetings that are useful, focused and educational.
Her student nominator continued by saying that Ulrich truly cares about the university and its students, noting, “She’s the kind of boss who makes you want to do your best, because you know she’s doing hers, too.”
President’s Awards For Exemplary Service
The University President’s Award for Exemplary Service celebrates the exceptional contributions of our faculty, staff, and administrators who embody the best of EWU through their work in support of student success, inclusion, regional impact, and our collective well-being.
Sonora Hernandez Service Award of Student Success and Experience
Sonora Hernandez, assistant director of Residence Life, is the recipient of the President’s Exemplary Service Award in the Student Success and Student Experience category.
Hernandez has consistently demonstrated a forwardthinking, collaborative, and equity-minded approach to student success, a nomination said. She is credited as a visionary leader committed to transforming institutional practices to best support student growth, retention, and holistic development.
As a key member of the student journey mapping committee, Hernandez helped chart the pathways students experience throughout their time at EWU. Her thoughtful insights and strategic perspective earned her the distinction of presenting the committee’s progress to the Executive Leadership Team. She was later appointed by university leadership to serve on the retention committee, where her expertise continues to shape initiatives that close equity gaps and strengthen student persistence.
Within her department, Hernandez co-developed the Residential Education Model, a transformative framework now in its third year. It has measurable outcomes that speak for themselves: 81% of students reported a strong sense of belonging and 76% credited their on-campus living experience for that connection. Confidence in accessing university resources also soared from 38% to 74%, illustrating how her programs empower students both academically and personally.
Hernandez’s innovation extends to career readiness. Through the Student Development Model for Community Advisors, Hernandez provides structured learning opportunities that translate on-campus work into professional competencies. Partnering with the Career Center, she ensures students leave EWU not just with knowledge, but with the confidence and skills to succeed beyond graduation.
Balancing strategic vision with heartfelt care, Hernandez leads with empathy, equity, and purpose. Her ability to turn institutional goals into transformative student experiences reflects her belief in every student’s potential and commitment to support student success.

Dr. Chad Pritchard Service Award of Regional Anchor and Impact
Chad Pritchard, a geosciences professor known for tackling high-impact regional environmental issues, has won the Eastern Washington University President’s Award for Exemplary Service in the Regional Anchor/Regional Impact category.
The honor recognizes his 14 years of research, student mentorship, and the regionwide benefits of his work.
Nomination letters highlighted many of Pritchard’s contributions as an educator and researcher.
Pritchard leads critical research on PFAS chemicals, having obtained a $450,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology to support free testing of private wells on the West Plains, providing residents with vital knowledge and a path to safer drinking water.
Pritchard mentors EWU students in hands-on research, helping them master geological modeling software and communicate findings to stakeholder groups – skills that position them as next-generation experts. He speaks at community forums, is a recognized PFAS expert for the media –always sharing the spotlight with student researchers.
Last year, he mentored 20 student presentations at the EWU Creative Works Symposium. Six went on to present at the 2024 Cordilleran and Rocky Mountain Geological Society of America meeting, where he co-chaired and organized logistics, field trips, and sponsorships.
Nearly every environmental consultancy and government agency in the Spokane area employs former students mentored by Pritchard, a nominator noted. “Perhaps what Dr. Pritchard is most proud of is the success of his students, who graduate into meaningful geoscience careers throughout the Pacific Northwest.”
Pritchard’s work and dedication to student success is shaping the next generation of scientists and positioning EWU as a leader in geologic research.
An Eastern alumnus from 2014, who now works as a professional geologist, credits Pritchard for preparing him for a successful career and connecting students like himself to industry opportunities. “The contributions he’s made to our society, and those yet to arise, will have an immeasurably positive effect for generations to come.”

Brent Seeberger Service Award of Investing in our People and Places
Brent Seeberger, supervisor of the Trucking Services unit, is the recipient of the Eastern Washington University President’s Exemplary Service Award in the Investing in our People and Places category.
Seeberger embodies what it means to care deeply about his team, the community, and the spaces that define campus life, a letter of nomination said.
“His approach to service goes far beyond completing tasks. He treats every request, every person, and every place with a level of commitment, attention and kindness that leaves a lasting impact,” the nominator shared.
While much of his work happens behind the scenes, its impact is experienced everywhere. From orchestrating department moves to setting up major events, Seeberger ensures that every space is ready to welcome students, faculty, and visitors. What sets him apart isn’t just his skills, but the compassion and humanity he brings to his university role. Whether it’s a large transition or a simple chair delivery, his focus is always on the campus community members served.
Seeberger’s leadership style exemplifies service to the university. His team is known for its hard work, as well as for kindness, humor and professionalism. Departments across campus often say that working with his team simply makes their day better, a testament to the culture Seeberger has established.
He invests in his people, mentoring staff and student employees alike. By advocating for their needs, teaching with patience, and modeling integrity, he helps others grow in confidence and pride. His thoughtful touch even extends to details like refinishing athletic buddy bars and adding the university’s eagle emblem, a small act that reflects immense pride.
Seeberger is humble, yet his approach to work uplifts everyone around him. Through his steady leadership and generous spirit, he has made both people and places stronger while exemplifying service, community and care.

Dr. Sheila Woodward Service Award of Belonging
Sheila Woodward, professor of music and director of music education, is receiving the Eastern Washington University President’s Award for Exemplary Service in the Belonging category.
Woodward was nominated based on her work to create inclusive education and cultural connection.
Using music as a bridge for healing, empowerment and community, she leads with purpose. As director of EWU’s mariachi ensemble, Las Águilas, she provides students with meaningful hands-on experience as musicians while enriching the campus and regional communities through performances that celebrate Latinx culture.
In the classroom, Woodward encourages students to explore how music intersects with identity, equity, and social change, creating an environment where every student feels seen and valued.
Her influence extends far beyond campus. In 2023, Woodward was elected president of the International Music Council, the world’s largest network of music organizations representing more than 600 million people. In this role, she advocates globally for artists’ rights and access to music. She brought attention to the plight of Afghan music students who, through global community action were supported to continue their education after their school was shuttered by the Taliban, a mission that reflects EWU’s values of access and justice.
Her visibility on the world stage elevates the university’s reputation while opening doors for student engagement on a global scale.
Woodward helps to create a sense of belonging in digital spaces, as well. Through the Master of Music in Music Education program, she uses innovative teaching methods, such as personalized guidance on improving scholarly skills and sensitive journal feedback, to connect with online students nationwide.
Born and raised in South Africa, Woodward began her career teaching in a historically Black community in Cape Town before immigrating to the United States in 2000. Over the years, Woodward has become a cornerstone of EWU’s music program and a global advocate for inclusive, accessible education.
2025-2026 Frances B. Huston Medallion Awards
The Frances B. Huston Medallion Recognizes Graduating Seniors for Excellence in Academics, Leadership, and Service.
Frances Breitweg Huston was born in Vancouver, Washington, Aug. 13, 1912. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Reed College in 1931, and her Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Washington (1947/1948). In 1955, Graham Dressler, PhD, professor of English at what was then Eastern Washington College of Education, offered Huston a position teaching English and English as a second language. Huston joined EWU’s faculty in the fall of 1955 and taught until her retirement in academic year 1975/1976.
The Frances B. Huston Medallion Award was established in 1998 by a gift from Mary Ann Nelson, EWU professor of English emerita, as a tribute to Huston’s lifelong commitment to education and a generosity to students that was quiet but ongoing. The medallion award program recognizes outstanding graduates and reflects Huston’s compassion and respect for
what education can do for an individual and a community. This award is presented to only 20 graduating students each year.
Recipients of the Frances B. Huston Medallion Award will have established themselves as exceptionally capable individuals in both academic and extracurricular activities. The faculty and administration of Eastern Washington University acknowledge their great pride in the accomplishments of these students during their college experience and expect even greater accomplishments in the years that lie ahead.
To be eligible to receive the award, students must
• be graduating seniors;
• have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement with a minimum of a 3.75 GPA in their previous four quarters; and
• qualify for the award in one or more of the following areas: leadership, service to the university and/or service to the community.
