Before considering trialling a sleep supplement, it is recommended you consult with a health professional such as your GP to ensure there are no contraindications with any current medication(s) you may be taking or if you have any health conditions.
It can be common to experience sleep changes following a concussion such as difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. As per the Australian and NZ (ANZ) concussion guidelines, more than 50% of people report sleep disturbances following a concussion. This can occur due factors such as temporary chemical and hormonal changes in the brain, which are responsible for regulating our sleep such as helping us to fall asleep and stay asleep. Alongside approaches such as implementing strategies to improve your sleep quality (known as sleep hygiene) such as adhering to a regular sleep and wake pattern, adopting a relaxing pre-bed time routine and so on (for more information, please speak to your concussion therapist), you may also wish to consider trialling sleep supplements, particularly if your sleep difficulties persist or if you wish to consider a non pharmaceutical approach.
