MANAGER’S NOTES
BRIAN SORENSEN Good afternoon, Evertonians. Welcome back to Walton Hall Park for our match against Manchester United. We were delighted to get off the mark last weekend with our first points of the season as we secured another special Merseyside derby victory at Anfield. It was a superb performance from our players. We were sharp, controlled the tempo of the game, and showed immense character against a good side in form. To win a derby is a great feeling and the manner in which we did strengthens the mentality of the group. I am incredibly proud of each and every player who played their part last weekend, and we will be relying on every member of the group as we head into another difficult contest this afternoon. Before I speak on Manchester United, I would like to offer my support to Gabby George who unfortunately damaged her ACL last week and is expected to be out of action for some time.
there are a lot of positives we can take from the performances. We impressed defensively when we picked up a point in February and we went toe-to-toe with United in the summer in our pre-season meeting. While we should not read too much into the friendly fixture, I was encouraged by the attitude our girls showed that day and proved that we are more than capable of going up against a top side. United will be licking their wounds from their defeat midweek, so we will need to be at our best if we are to take something from the match. Thankfully, we are coming into this game off the back of an excellent performance, so my message to the players is about continuing that. That message extends out to Evertonians as well. You were all outstanding in the away section at Anfield and we know you will be exceptional again today.
Myself, my staff and the squad were devastated when we heard the news. Gabby is a great player and a fantastic person who undoubtedly will be supported through this challenging journey ahead.
It has been a while since we have picked up a win at Walton Hall Park, so we want to do just that today against a top side.
I have no doubt she will come out stronger on the other end and we hope to see her back on the field as soon as possible.
This season has already shown how tough the competition is, but also how any team are capable of being beat on the day.
Manchester United are an excellent side. Marc Skinner has built an exciting team over the past couple of seasons, and I expect them to challenge for the title this season.
We will have to be at our best, but that is the minimum standard when you represent this football club.
We have played United twice so far this year and evertonfc.com
Enjoy the game. Brian 3

CAPTAIN'S NOTES
MEGAN FINNIGAN Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Walton Hall Park. We are all still buzzing off the back of the win at Anfield. It was a historic evening and a great feeling to beat our rivals, but most importantly earning our first points of the season.
supporting her on the journey that lies ahead.
As the captain of this club and the fantastic group of players I work alongside, I feel an immense sense of pride.
Manchester United are a top team. They have had a strong start both in the league and in Europe with their performances against PSG.
The first two games of the campaign were incredibly disappointing, but it was not down to a lack of effort from our girls.
We are still early into the season, but you can see how wide open the league is going to be this year.
We knew there were elements of our performances that we had to work on and last weekend it all seemed to click. One thing I cannot doubt is the togetherness within the squad. After a difficult start, it would be very easy for heads to drop and a feeling of negativity to begin to creep in. That was simply not the case with our group. We have all stuck together and knew the results would come. Every single player has their part to play in that and we want to carry that mentality into today’s game and beyond. Before I focus on today’s opponents, I first want to offer my thoughts and love for Gabby George who has suffered an ACL injury. Gabby is someone our fans know very well and someone I am fortunate to call my best friend. Everyone at the Club is gutted to hear she has been dealt the cruellest of injuries, but we know she will be back. Gabby is one of the strongest people I know, and she will have countless people evertonfc.com
Any team are beatable on the day, and we take that mindset heading into this afternoon. United have an excellent squad with a lot of depth, but they are coming into today’s game off the back of a trip to Paris midweek so hopefully we can use that to our advantage. We have played United twice so far this year, picking up a point in February and then were narrowly beaten in our pre-season outing over the summer. There is confidence we can take from that; this group of players are more than capable of taking a result against a side like this. In order to achieve that, every single player will need to be at their best, just like they were against Liverpool. That is my message to the girls, to keep the same mentality that they had at Anfield because we showed that we could step up, that we have character. It is a big challenge, but one we embrace. Enjoy the game, Meg 5

DUGGAN REVEALS DERBY PROMISE Toni Duggan says she feels “as good as ever” after making her return to the Everton team this season. The 32-year-old gave birth to her daughter, Luella, earlier this year and worked tirelessly to be ready in time for the new campaign. Duggan has made appearances off the bench in Everton's opening matches so far this season, scoring against Manchester City and featuring in the Merseyside derby victory last weekend. “I feel good,” she said, speaking to the Official Matchday Programme. “I know I’ve been out a long time, but I feel like I’ve never been away. People can say, ‘She’s not fit yet, evertonfc.com
she’s not ready’ but I feel as good as ever. “All I can do with the minutes I get is come on, make an impact, and show what I can do. I don’t want anything to be used against me. I’ve had a baby, but I’m a player now. I’m back in the team and I’m available. It’s my job to help the team in any way best possible.” Duggan missed last year’s derby victory at Anfield but was there to play her part in this season’s win over their local rivals. The Liverpool-born forward revealed that she and Nico Sorensen, who also missed last year’s Anfield fixture, made a promise to return for this
season’s game. “There’s no better way to turn things round than winning the Merseyside derby,” Duggan explained. “Liverpool are our rivals. They always have been. “Last year I was a bit emotional because I didn’t get the chance to play, but I did have a baby in my belly at the time! “Nico was out, too. She had an ACL injury, and we made a promise at the time that we’d be out there together at Anfield next year. One year on, and a lot of hard work later, it was great for that to happen, and even better to get the win – with Luella there to support!”

Justine Vanhaevermaet says her feelings for Everton have deepened quickly following her first-ever taste of the Merseyside derby.
The Blues midfielder, who joined the Toffees in the summer, produced a superb display in the middle of the park at Anfield, where Everton got up and running for the season with a 1-0 victory.
Vanhaevermaet played the full 90 minutes, and won four of her five aerial duels, as well as winning four of her five ground duels. After a dominant display, the Belgium international was keen to praise the Everton fans for their support during the game.
Vanhaevermaet hopes the belief generated from last weekend’s win can inspire the squad heading into today’s game against Manchester United.
“To play at Anfield, take three points at their home ground is phenomenal. The team were brilliant, it was a team performance, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
“Three points always gives you a bit more confidence,” she said, speaking to the Official Matchday Programme. “When you play well, but don’t take something from the game, it’s not always easy. On Sunday, it was an amazing feeling. We played well, took three points, and now hopefully we can continue that into today’s game.” Against Liverpool,
“It was special. Our fans are amazing and they’re so supportive. I’m super happy to play for Everton and for these fans.” It had been a tough start to the campaign for the Blues, who were without a point heading into Sunday’s clash, despite a number of promising performances. Now off the mark, Vanhaevermaet is
convinced the squad can kick on. “We have such a good team, and we show it day in, day out on the training pitch,” the 31-year-old continued. “It’s good to now finally get off the mark and get the three points because we deserve a lot more than what we’ve got. It’s a phenomenal feeling. “The previous week was disappointing because I should have scored [the penalty against Leicester City]. If I did then we would have been one nil up and it’s a different game. “You can get caught up in that, but you need to bounce back. I just tried to work hard again in training and the team were brilliant on Sunday. It’s a great feeling to play alongside them.” The win - Everton's first of the campaign - maintained Brian

Sorensen's side's 100-per-cent record at Anfield, with Everton now winning all four of their matches at Anfield, having not conceded a goal. Sorensen, delighted after another away victory against Liverpool, agrees with Vanhaevermaet that the victory was a result of a team effort. “It was a complete team performance,” said a delighted evertonfc.com
Sorensen, reacting after the game. “I’m not in doubt about the players; I know what they’re capable of. I know when we step into this an iconic stadium like Anfield, that they will do the job. They will be calm, and I really felt we were in control for large parts of the game. “Yaya [Galli] was phenomenal. Justine [Vanhaevermaet] was really, really good. [Hanna Bennison] was excellent. I could
mention everybody. It was a team effort and I’m really super proud. “At the end they could have got it in, but we had opportunities to put it to bed. That’s how it will always be - we ride it out. I think the chances they were getting; they were outside the box second balls that are scrappy. It wasn’t that they were playing through us at all. Defensively, I think we were really rock solid.” 17

FANS TAKE PART IN GOODISON SLEEPOUT 2023
Everton in the Community supporters spent the night braving the elements at Goodison Park last Friday to help raise awareness and vital funds for the charity’s ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ programme. Now in its seventh year, the annual Goodison Park Sleepout offers participants the chance to experience a unique night under the lights at the Grand Old Lady whilst giving them an insight into the struggles that people battling homelessness go through daily. As the Club’s move to its new waterfront home gets closer, this presented one of the last opportunities for supporters to camp in the Sir Philip Carter Park Stand. Almost 100 Evertonians, including content creator, StillRyan – who boasts over half a million followers on TikTok – came together to support people who are vulnerable to homelessness from across the Liverpool City Region, raising over £20,000 and counting in total for the charity’s ‘Home Is
Where The Heart Is’ programme. During the evening, participants were given an insight into Everton in the Community and the programme the event raised funds for with Everton presenter Sarah Halpin hosting a Q&A with the charity’s CEO Sue Gregory before welcoming support workers Michael Branch and John Olyott on stage. Whilst John provided attendees on the night with an understanding of the day to day running of the programme and its everyday impact, we heard how former player, Michael is adapting to working for Everton off the pitch after representing the Blues on the pitch in the mid-90s. Funds raised from the event are channelled towards the sustainability and development of ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is’ which supports young people on the cusp of homelessness through a four-bedroomed residential
house. The residence – funded from previous sleepouts – provides a safe space for at-risk young people, supporting them to acquire qualifications and employment, manage bills and rebuild family relationships. Since its launch in 2016, the Goodison Park Sleepout has helped fund the charity’s efforts to combat youth homelessness and poverty – with supporters across the region taking part over the years and raising thousands for the ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is Programme’. This year's Goodison Park Sleepout is done, but the work to deliver our vital services never stops. To show your support for this year's Sleepout, donate at justgiving. com/campaign/goodison-parkstadium-sleepout-2023 To find out more about how you can support Everton in the Community, visit evertoninthecommunity.org/ support-us
