MANAGER’S NOTES

BRIAN SORENSEN

Good afternoon, Evertonians. Welcome back to Walton Hall Park for today’s match against Bristol City. I want to begin today’s notes by saying how proud I am of the girls for the level of performance they produced last weekend against Chelsea. I have watched the game back, reviewed the stats and I believe we kept them to their lowest expected goals in a number of years. It was a team performance full of character and while it did not result in points, the girls know they can take a lot of confidence from it and use it as a benchmark for the standard moving forward.

They managed to get their first win of the season against West Ham, a side that have looked really solid this season. I believe Bristol’s approach to recruitment over the summer was really smart, with a good blend of youth and experience. It is not dissimilar to how we have looked to recruit during my time at the Club. They are a really good team; we cannot take anything lightly. We have to be focused and ready to fight because it will not be an easy game.

The first half, especially, was fantastic – but we have to do that over 90 minutes now.

The girls have taken on a lot of information this week and I am confident that physically, tactically, and mentally they are ready for the challenge that awaits this afternoon.

While the message this week has been more of the same in terms of intensity and desire, we must show that across the entire match.

Before I conclude today’s notes, I want to take a moment to thank our supporters for their incredible backing so far this season.

The girls have already proved this season that they are capable demonstrating that, such as during the win at Anfield and even for large portions of the home match against Manchester United.

I try to speak to our fans when I can after games and your words meant a lot last weekend.

It is now about how we get back up to that level and stay there. We also now have players returning from injury who will, of course, help us achieve that goal. I have been really impressed with what I have seen from Bristol this season.

It has not been the start to the season we envisioned, but your support through that difficult spell has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Myself, my staff, and the players want to produce a team that works for each other, fights for this Royal Blue jersey and makes you – our fans – proud. We hope to show that this afternoon.

Lauren Smith has built a team that is difficult to break down while also being dangerous and finding different ways to score.

CAPTAIN'S NOTES

MEGAN FINNIGAN

Good afternoon and welcome back to Walton Hall Park for today’s match against Bristol City. I was left very proud of our girls after the performance against Chelsea last weekend, probably the proudest I have been all season. That may sound odd for those who only saw the scoreline, but when you reflect on how we played, you can see how the end result flattered our opponent. In particular, I thought we were brilliant in the first half and that level of performance now has to be the minimum standard moving forward. It has not been an easy start to the season for us. We had an honest conversation after the Manchester United match – and we saw a reaction from the players from that in the Chelsea game. That reaction was at least partly down to the anger and frustration from within ourselves as we had not hit the levels we know that we are capable of reaching. The fight and desire shown by the girls in a difficult moment proves that we are more than able to turn things around. Raising our game against Chelsea, a side that you need to have a near-perfect performance to compete against, was recognised by our fans and we fed off the energy you all gave us.

We need to show more of that passion and streetwise edge to our game now, starting today. Points will always be what matter most and we have another opportunity to get three more on the board today. We have a very dangerous opponent in Bristol and the message to the squad this week is to leave nothing to chance and show no complacency. Similar to us this season, they have played some really good football, taking teams like Arsenal all the way and refusing to back down from a fight. The Bristol teams I have played against in the past have been hardworking and relentless – and I expect that to be the same this afternoon. We know we have a big test in front of us but we also have confidence that we can secure our first home win of the season. What I can guarantee is that all of our players will turn up today with the same level of focus and determination as seen last weekend. We want this to be the moment to get our season going. We hope to do you proud.

Evertonians love to see a team that fights, it is the fundamental value of the best Everton teams over the years.

SARA HOLMGAARD: I’m Stronger Than Ever

Everton’s Sara Holmgaard says she is feeling reenergised with a newfound strength following her return from injury.

“Physically, I’ve been ready for months. I’ve just been dealing with a pain problem for the last few months.

The Blues full-back made her first start since May on Sunday after a prolonged period on the sidelines and impressed in her 52-minute outing against Chelsea last weekend.

“I’m stronger than ever now and hopefully people could see that against Chelsea.

The Holmgaard twin admitted it had been a frustrating road to return to action but her absence has fuelled her hunger to take her game to the next level. “I’m lost for words,” Sara Holmgaard told the Official Everton Programme. “It’s an unbelievable feeling to be back with the girls and to start my first match [in quite some time]. It’s an amazing feeling. evertonfc.com

“I’m ready to get more minutes and continue to build back up.”

inevitably follow. “Our first half [against Chelsea] was really good. We can take a lot of things from the game and factor it into our next matches,” she added. “We showed what we’re capable of, we just need to score when we get our chances.

After a sobering defeat to Manchester United last week – where the defender made her first appearance of the season – the Toffees delivered a performance full of fight, character and pride against reigning WSL champions Chelsea.

“We could have been ahead if we were a bit calmer, but the performance we can be proud of.

Sara is confident that if the Blues can take those promising elements of Sunday's display, then wins will

“The first half especially, we need to build on from that and then wins will come in the next games, 100-per-cent.”

“We know Chelsea are a good team, so we take confidence into our next games after the way we performed against them.

Ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this year, Katja Snoeijs was a striker in clinical goalscoring form. Six goals in the space of 13 matches ensured the Everton forward's place in the Netherlands squad for the finals of the tournament, held in Oceania. It would be eventual winners Spain who brought Dutch dreams to an end at the quarter-final stage, but Snoeijs' says her first taste of the World Cup has fuelled her desire for more success at domestic and international level. “The World Cup was definitely one of the highlights of my career so far,” she told the evertonfc.com. “It was an amazing thing to experience and something I learnt a lot from. “I think it motivates you

massively, just being there and seeing how big a tournament like that is, and how many fans show up to the event.

Snoeijs finished her maiden Everton campaign as the Club’s top goalscorer with eight goals in all competitions.

“It inspires you to come back to your club or country and try to re-create the same level you played in during the tournament.

The 27-year-old insists she isn’t obsessing over reclaiming that accolade this term but will always welcome the pressure of registering on the scoresheet.

“We played against the eventual World Champions [Spain] and while we lost to them, you can still draw positives when you think how we went up against them. “It makes you want to beat them next time. You think ‘okay, now we’re at this level but if we want to become World Champions then there’s still room to improve’. “That’s the level you want to reach in your training sessions and in games.”

“I always perform better under certain pressure,” she continued. “Of course, you always need to find a balance in terms of making sure it’s healthy and you’re not getting too distracted or anxious. “I always challenge myself a little bit, I just want to start better than I did last season and hopefully that will end up in more goals. “In the end, scoring goals is the end product of what you do. a striker, you can’t say you don’t want score goals, but you're trying not to be too focused on it. “Instead, be focussed on the chances and getting in the right positions, and then you can look at how the stats are at the end of the season.” Everton bolstered their attacking ranks over the summer, recruiting Italy international, Martina Piemonte, while Toni Duggan also returned to the evertonfc.com

then getting the best out of your teammate.

And, with each of the trio offering different attributes, Snoeijs believes the Blues are in a strong place looking forward to the rest of the term.

“The advantage of playing with two strikers is that you can complement each other to get the best out of both.

“I think there is still work to be done with regards to how we play together,” she added. “We’re all different types of strikers, so it’s about getting to know each other’s qualities and

“We are all really intelligent players; it’s just going to take more experience of playing together to get a better understanding of what we want from each other.”

Everton's Lucy Hope headed to Everton in the Community’s L4 campus recently to discover how the charity is engaging with female veterans and their families.

Everton’s Veterans’ Hub as well as participants from the ‘Welcome Through Football’ project which is designed to support refugees and asylum seekers who have been relocated to Liverpool.

The Scotland International met ex-servicewomen from the newly formed Stand By Her programme which supports female veterans and family members with the opportunity to connect with likeminded people whilst combatting social isolation.

The Blues midfielder was on hand to present the winners' trophy and medals before the evening culminated in her heading inside the charity’s mental health and wellbeing hub, The People’s Place to take part in a ‘meet and greet’ with participants from the female veterans’ programme.

As part of a Remembrance football tournament hosted at The People’s Hub, Hope also met ex-service personnel from

Reflecting on the night, Lucy Hope said: “I’m so glad I had the opportunity to come down here tonight, it’s been hugely inspiring

meeting the veterans. They’re all from different backgrounds and walks of life but football has brought them together to celebrate such a great cause. “The fact that the Stand By Her programme has only been running since May and they’ve been able to field a team for the tournament and go toe-to-toe with the men’s team is incredible, it was really humbling to watch them. Football in general is very much a male-dominated environment and it’s the same for the military, so for the charity to create a programme solely dedicated to female veterans is life-changing and so empowering for that community.”
