BANDABOU CARNIVAL PARADE: February 14, 2026 Banda’ bou, the countryside and more rural part of the island, has its own parade through the streets of Barber & surrounding areas. Location: the streets of Barber, Banda’bou
During this parade, local children walk and dance in the most colorful costumes along the Carnival route. Just like their older counterparts, they also have their own Tumba song and also elect their own Carnival King and Queen. The Tumba Festival is the biggest musical event in Curaçao and features the best local singers who fervently compete for the Tumba King or Queen title. The competition lasts four nights, where each qualifying rounds serve to select the finalists who will then compete during the Friday finale. THE “GRAN MARCHA”: Febraury 15, 2026 The anticipation for the daytime parade is at an all-time high, as the groups gather behind the designated trailers, starting in Sta. Maria and making their way through the streets of Otrabanda. Tourists and locals alike line the streets during the parade to cheer on their favorite groups, costumed dancers, and performers. YOUTH FAREWELL PARADE: Febraury 16, 2026
The children wear their beautiful costumes for the last time during their farewell parade and walk and dance along the Carnival route.
MAIN FAREWELL PARADE: Febraury 17, 2026 The final evening parade of Curaçao’s Carnival is also mesmerizing, as many groups use lights and reflective material in their outfits, creating a visual spectacle. T
he Blue Wave isn’t just a slogan anymore; it’s a feeling that has swept across our island and into our hearts. On November 18, 2025, the Curaçao National Football Team did the unthinkable. After a tense, unforgettable 0–0 draw against Jamaica, our national team qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For a nation of just 165,000 people, the emotion is overwhelming. Joy poured into the streets, pride filled every home, and tears flowed freely. We celebrated this achievement with a large defile that culminated in a memorable block party with approximately 10,000 people at Waaigat. As Jeon sings in Blue Wave, “Mama wak unda nos a yega”, Mom, look how far we have come. This moment didn’t happen overnight. Our journey truly began in 2011, when Curaçao became a standalone FIFA member following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. Suddenly, we were responsible for building our own football identity. Over the years, investment in youth development and the recruitment of players with Dutch Curaçaoan roots transformed our ambitions into reality. Many of our players developed in the Netherlands, but they play with the soul of the island. Step by step, Curaçao announced itself in Concacaf, from beating Montserrat in our first World Cup qualifying tie in 2015 to lifting the 2017 Caribbean Cup by defeating Jamaica. Much of this foundation was built under coach Remko Bicentini, who believed in our players
Photo by Rilley Ignacio and gave many of them their first chance in blue. But in 2024, destiny knocked louder with the arrival of legendary coach Dick Advocaat. A World Cup veteran, Advocaat brought belief, discipline, and experience. At 78, he is now set to become the oldest head coach ever at a World Cup, another historic first for us. After a dominant 7–0 win over Bermuda, everything came down to Jamaica. Behind the heroics of goalkeeper Eloy Room and a fearless defense helmed by players like Juninho and Leandro Bacuna, we stood tall and made history. Now, the world will hear our anthem. Yes, we are underdogs against Germany, Ecuador, and Côte d’Ivoire, but we carry no fear, only pride. Whatever happens in 2026, in our eyes, Curaçao has already won. Our flag will fly, our name will echo across stadiums, and the Blue Wave will roll on forever.

Landmark sites such as Fort Amsterdam, the Governor’s Palace, the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and the vibrant Penha building showcase Willemstad’s signature Caribbean interpretation of Dutch colonial architecture. Curaçao’s 373 years of history unfold across eight forts, 55 restored landhuizen (plantation estates) and dozens of traditional kunuku houses, the simple stick-and-mud dwellings once inhabited by the enslaved. The historic districts of Otrobanda, Punda, and Scharloo are all easily explored on foot and connected by pedestrian friendly bridges. Over the past few years, each neighborhood has been busy reinventing itself with incredible outdoor art poised to compete with the allure of the famous colorful Handelskade. Each “barrio” has its own historical attractions including well-preserved forts and museums as well. And of course, there are scads of great spots to snack and shop in all of them. Free guided walking tours are on offer (www.freewalkingtourscuracao. com), but if you’d rather explore with a focus on art and history, here’s a plan...

Otrobanda
Begin with a picturesque primer on Curacao’s architectural and trade history in front of Renaissance Park where you’ll find a series of informational placards along the waterfront that lead to the famous Rif Fort. Explore the fort, then don’t cross the floating pontoon bridge yet, instead head past it to the new Kura Hulanda Village where art, history, and cool spots to eat, drink, and shop all collide in a compact and colorful grid. Visit the Kura Hulanda Museum, then wander the cobblestone streets to admire outdoor murals by famous local talents like Bagira. You’ll find her gallery there, too. Next, head up the hill to Ser'i Otrobanda (ser'i means hill) to find more stunning creative installations, many left behind by the annual Kaya Kaya Festival artists, and don't miss climbing the insta-worthy mosaic staircase.
Punda
Now, double back to cross the famous Queen Emma bridge to seek out the little artist alleyway on Middenstraat for more murals including one that explains the meaning of “dushi”, a very popular Papiamentu expression. Stroll further into the interior to find multiple new outdoor works in the community. For history, head to the public square of Fort Amsterdam to get postcard perfect photos of Curaçao’s oldest building and Fort Church, the island’s oldest church, which is also a small museum. apiamentu is a unique, multifaceted language that emerged over the course of more than 300 years. Its origins lie in the blending of various linguistic influences, primarily Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and several West and Central African languages, shaped by the colonial encounters and the transatlantic slave trade that defined the history of the ABC Islands: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. While it is primarily spoken across these islands, Papiamentu is a living, evolving language that was initially intended for oral communication rather than written expression. It mirrors the cultural diversity and resilience of the region, encapsulating elements of African heritage, European colonial influence, and rich local adaptations. Over the centuries, Papiamentu has flourished into a vibrant, expressive means of daily interaction for islanders and has become deeply intertwined with their cultural identity and shared sense of community.
Despite its strong oral roots, the language has increasingly gained written recognition in education, literature, and media. In cooking, krioyo is the sauce that brings everything together, history, heritage, and flavor in one small bite. The kriyoyo way, welcoming and celebrating the best of all these influences, infuses Otrobanda’s annual Kaya Kaya Street Festival, featuring multiple stages of musicians and DJs, dancers, outdoor art tours, vendors, and foods that reflect Curaçao’s diversity. Organized with and for the residents, Kaya Kaya unites locals and visitors to support grassroots urban development, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment. Otrobanda “the other side” of Willemstad, is a vibrant multicultural neighborhood and UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded in1707 as one of three original districts. Over eight years, Kaya Kaya has sparked a renaissance here, turning the district into an open-air gallery along with new restaurants, bars, Airbnbs, and more than 70 “larger than life” murals by local and international artists. “Kaya Kaya has a driving ethos to ‘Leave it better behind,’” explains Director and COO Raygen
Zuiverloon. “Each year we move to a new part of Otrobanda, trim trees, fix sidewalks, commission murals, we even built an amphitheater. The whole neighborhood is invited to participate.” “To me, ‘community’ means what we are making together,” Zuiverloon adds. “It’s vibrant and proud and aspirational. People want to roll up their sleeves and be part of something positive.” Highlights of 2025 included opera at the historic Basilica of Santa Ana, youth performances, and Skol Urbano workshops at St. Martinus College, and elevating Belvederestraat into a hub for dance, poetry, and art. “Aside from performing, young people see adults taking pride in their city,” says Zuiverloon. “That builds continuity in the community”. Also, international musical stars like Aldaiir and Izaline Calister returned home to perform, reconnecting Curaçao and its diaspora. In 2026, look for Kaya Kaya to evolve into a year-round movement, with storytelling workshops, mural tours, open-air art weeks, and King’s Day festivities.

Silent Sentinels of Curaçao
T
he morning sun rose golden over Willemstad as I began my journey through Curaçao’s storied forts, silent sentinels that had guarded this island for centuries. My first stop was Fort Amsterdam, standing at the edge of Punda since 1635. Once the island’s main defense, it now houses the Governor’s residence, government offices, and a small museum that whispers tales of colonial intrigue. I paused by the southwestern wall, where a cannonball, fired by none other than Captain Bligh’s troops, still rests, embedded in stone like a relic of defiance. Crossing to Otrobanda, I arrived at Riffort, a massive structure built in 1828 to protect the harbor’s mouth. Today, its ramparts are alive with music and conversation, transformed into Riffort Village, a maze of shops, cafes, and terraces overlooking the bustling waterfront.

Just beyond Punda, the remains of Waterfort tell another story. First built in 1634, it later grew into a fortress with 136 vaults that once held soldiers, horses, and supplies. During World War II, it became home to troops once again. Today, the echo of boots has been replaced by the hum of diners enjoying seaside meals. Just a short drive from these historic forts stands the Tula Monument located on the south coast of Willemstad, near where he was executed. This monument serves as a powerful symbol of freedom and resilience on the Caribbean island and a solemn tribute to Curaçao’s greatest freedom fighter, Tula Rigaud. In 1795, Tula led an uprising against slavery, demanding equality and justice for all. With its arms sweeping upward toward the sky, the monument embodies resilience, courage, and the indomitable spirit of liberation. Standing before it left me breathless, filled with awe.

Next, I ascended to Fort Nassau, constructed in 1797. From its hilltop perch, it once guarded St. Anna Bay and controlled Willemstad’s famous Pontoon Bridge. Now, the cannons have fallen silent, replaced by clinking glasses and laughter from a restaurant that celebrates the island’s history. Over a meal, I watched the city’s pastel skyline shimmer over Willemstad in the afternoon sun. A short drive took me to Fort Beekenburg, perched above Caracas Bay. Built in 1703, its rugged silhouette overlooks the “Spanish Waters” inlet. As I climbed its weathered steps, I imagined French and English ships once retreating under its gunfire. The Caribbean breeze carried the scent of salt and seaweed as I gazed out over the calm waters, today visited by swimmers and snorkelers, unaware of the fort’s fierce past.

W
e met at the entrance of the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for pickup, and there it was, the open-air, brightly painted Irie Tours bus, waiting to take us to our port of embarkation at Village Marina in Caracas Bay. As we drove, we were treated to sweeping, crystal-clear views of the harbor from the Juliana Bridge, which gracefully spans both sides of Willemstad. A couple of pleasant stops to collect additional guests only added to the growing sense of anticipation. At the dock, friendly smiles greeted us. We grabbed a coffee and settled into the soft morning warmth as we waited to board. The catamaran towered above the dock, poised over a sparkling sea and bathed in the golden light of early morning. Moments later, Captain Jay appeared at the dock entrance, welcoming us aboard the spacious catamaran aptly named Cool Runnings. Soft island music played in the background as we stepped onto the deck. A cheerful mix of families, couples, and friends followed, all beaming and ready for a day on the water. The crew greeted each guest with a warm “Bon Bini!” and a tray of refreshing fruit punch. Once everyone found a comfortable spot, Captain Jay gathered us for a
lively, light-hearted safety briefing, where to find the life vests, how to move safely around the boat, and what the day had in store. His easy humor and relaxed energy set the perfect tone. We knew it was going to be a wonderful day. With a gentle hum, the catamaran eased away from the dock and glided into the calm Spanish Waters, shimmering under the rising sun. We drifted past elegant hillside villas, their pastel façades mirrored in the glassy lagoon. Soon the Sandals Resort came into view, its pristine beachfront dotted with thatched umbrellas and sunbathers waving as we passed. Before long, the catamaran slipped through the narrow channel and out into the open Caribbean, where turquoise waves glittered brighter and the warm breeze grew stronger. Our first scenic pause was in the harbor of St. Anna Bay, gliding right into the heart of Willemstad. We waved to passersbys on the floating bridge and admired the vibrant, historic buildings lining Otrobanda and Punda. The panoramic view of the capital was breathtaking! Continuing west along the southern coast, we passed a string of resorts before arriving at events curaçao 39

the laid-back paradise of Kokomo Beach. The anchor was dropped and we dove into crystalclear water for a refreshing snorkel and swim. Soft music drifted from the boat while some of us paddled ashore to stretch our legs and snap photos by the famous Kokomo swing, pure Caribbean postcard perfection. Back on board, we cruised toward Cas Abou. The transparency of the sea there is dreamy! The crew grilled chicken, ribs, and fish while guests helped themselves to salads, sweet plantains, and chilled drinks. After lunch, we slipped back into the turquoise water, floating lazily as pelicans dove nearby. Next, we traveled west to one of Curaçao’s most magical gems: the Blue Room. The catamaran anchored just offshore, and we snorkeled through a low cave entrance into a glowing chamber washed in cobalt light. Sunbeams illuminated the water in electric shades of blue while tiny fish shimmered around us, an otherworldly, unforgettable experience. Our final stop was Playa Kalki, affectionately known as Alice in Wonderland for its vibrant coral formations. I’ve snorkeled there before, and it truly 40 events curaça
feels like swimming through a living underwater garden. One by one, we were helped off the boat, waving cheerful goodbyes and feeling deeply grateful for such a magnificent day. With salt still on our skin and the day etched firmly into memory, we boarded the open-air bus for a scenic ride along the glittering coast and rolling cactus-studded hills, eventually returning to our hotel, where we received one last warm send-off.

Under a velvet Caribbean sky, the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival 2025 pulsed to life, where a island breeze tangled in the palms and the scent of sea salt mixed with the rhythmic heartbeat of live music. The open-air venue, perched at the edge of the Caribbean Sea, glowed with soft stage lights reflecting off the water like dancing spirits. Locals and travelers alike swayed together, as the night wrapped around them like a warm, soulful embrace.

hursday opened with salsa legend Gilberto Santa Rosa, warming the crowd with smooth vocals and irresistible grooves. Then came Kool & The Gang, legends of funk and disco. Formed in the 1960s in New Jersey, their grooves had weathered generations, from block parties to black-tie galas. Tonight, they brought it all, "Celebration," "Jungle Boogie," and "Get Down On It" lit up the crowd, and suddenly it felt like Studio 54 under the stars. Friday was a firestorm of rhythm. The Gipsy Kings by Diego Baliardo opened the night with a flamenco firestorm. Descendants of Spanish Romani immigrants in France, the Kings turned guitars into storytelling weapons, their classic "Bamboléo" stirred the ground beneath people’s feet. Kandace Springs, with her velvet voice and jazz-soul elegance, took things down to a smoky, intimate groove. A quiet star behind her piano, she sang as if to each person individually, her melodies floating over the sea like candlelight.

hen came Ricky Martin, and the energy spiked. Latin pop royalty, born in Puerto Rico and bred on boyband charm before becoming an international icon, he launched into “Livin’ La Vida Loca” as a full moon climbed the horizon. The area became a dance floor; hips didn’t lie and neither did hearts. Paul Carrack offered a soulful, nostalgic interlude. Then the stage lit up with Ryan Castro, Colombian urbano star, igniting the crowd with reggaeton fire, as dancers moved like the night would never end. Sheila E., the Queen of Percussion and former protégé of Prince, followed, glittering in gold and gripping her timbales. She delivered rhythms that thundered through the palm trees. Her history, from playing with Marvin Gaye to leading her own electrifying bands, echoed in every smack of the drumhead. She was both elegance and force.

By Saturday, the crowd was glowing from within, sun-kissed and musically blessed. Saturday was pure musical magic. Cimafunk launched the evening with Cuban funk, followed by Cory Henry, blending jazz and gospel into a glowing sonic prayer. Virtuosos Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Hamilton de Holanda, joined by Ivan Lins and Gabriel Grossi, mesmerized with Latin jazz mastery. Genre-defying Jacob Collier layered harmonies like a magician, while Grammywinner Koffee delivered reggae fire and hope. Then, in a haze of pink lights, Snoop Dogg took the stage. Cooler than the evening breeze and draped in island-chill swagger, Snoop lit up the stage, and, well, a few other things. From Long Beach to Curaçao, his laid-back flow transcended time. "Drop It Like It’s Hot" rolled off his tongue like smoke in the wind. The sea behind him shimmered. Reggae undertones merged with hip-hop swagger. Even the waves seemed to nod along.
Tems, the Nigerian alt-R&B powerhouse, closed out the night with her voice, both strong and tender, echoed out into the Caribbean night, wrapping the

ver the years, the charming country house Landhuis Bloemhof (1735) has grown into a vibrant meeting place for all art lovers. The legacy of May Henriquez, a pioneer of the Curaçao art scene, is well preserved in her frozenintime sculpture studio and in the quaint Ex Libris MayMax library, where cultural artefacts and archives about the island’s history are collected and displayed. May Henriquez was the first Curaçao artist to study in Paris with Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine, and she paved the way for many talents by becoming a patron of the arts. Her daughters and granddaughter continue her work by actively supporting arts education and cultural projects on Curaçao to this day. In the main hall of the authentic, wellpreserved mansion there is always a rotating art exhibition by either local or foreign artists who have a connection with Curaçao. When we last visited, a multidisciplinary exhibition called “Life Lines” features works by Vali Leonora, Suzet Rosaria, and Kati Qui, bringing together visual art, poetry, and performance around themes of resilience, healing, and creative expression. Meanwhile, another past exhibition was titled “Sorry,...” It gathered contributions from 19 artists, responding to the 2022 Dutch apology for the role of the Netherlands in the slave trade. You will often find these themed exhibitions featuring mixed media, ceramics, painting, sculpture, and a wide array of voices exploring memory, identity, and justice.
Also, Bloemhof supports the work of other local organizations by adding a visual art component. As an example, in cooperation with the Curaçao International Film Festival (CIFF), they held a “Lost & Found” art competition where artists were asked to create works inspired by Rembrandt’s “Sense of Taste,” a painting from his Five Senses series that is lost. Arthur Oster won the competition; his winning piece was featured in a short documentary that was shown at CIFF 2025, while the finalists’ works were exhibited at Bloemhof. Walking around the gardens, you can still visit the openair sculpture studio of Hortence Brouwn, and the monumental Cathedral of Thorns by Herman van Bergen, a buildingsized labyrinth made of millions of acacia thorns. The Cathedral contains niches with objects of contemporary art, symbols from world religions and ancient natural belief systems, and at night, golden light glows from within the thorns. As the fire eating dancers moved across the sand, I thought about the fire rituals of ancient cultures. Fire was never just a tool. It symbolized life, power, destruction, and rebirth. Our slice of Paradise
W
e had long dreamed of owning a second home, a serene retreat that offered both sanctuary and smart investment. Living in Curacao, our first home on the south coast had always been our haven, yet our hearts were drawn to explore another side of the island. Time and again, we found ourselves returning to one special place: Banda Abou. In 2022, that dream took shape when we discovered an exclusive development in Westpunt, Punta Azul. From our first visit, we knew this was the place we’d been searching for. By 2023, the decision was clear, this would be our new home. Banda Abou’s turquoise waters, secluded beaches, and unspoiled beauty hold a quiet magic. Life here moves at a gentler rhythm, the air feels softer, the sea more inviting, and each sunset paints the horizon in gold and crimson. We pictured mornings on the terrace, tea in hand, watching fishermen return with their catch. For Hubert, an avid open-water swimmer, having the ocean just steps away made it perfect. When we returned in 2023, we found something special, Punta Azul, an oceanfront development in Westpunt still under construction. Perched beside the sea, it offered direct access to the Caribbean’s crystal-clear waters, exactly what we had dreamed of. We chose a spacious twobedroom residence with sweeping ocean views. The blend of location, comfort, and natural beauty, combined with Curaçao’s irresistible charm, made our decision effortless. From that first visit, we were moved not only by the island’s breathtaking scenery but also by the warmth of its people. Curaçao offers everything we could want, fresh seafood, calm blue waters, a welcoming multilingual community, and an international mix of residents and visitors united by their love for this remarkable island. Seek out the House of Stroop for freshly made Dutch favorite ‘stroopwafels’, or stop by Lionfish Caribbean to sample multiple tasty preparations of this exotic, yet invasive, fish. Head for Bario Foodyard nearby for awesome ‘urban street food’ kiosks surrounding a lively bar. After dark, ascend to the new Elevation Harbor Rooftop Bar & Cuisine for live cooking presentations and incredible harbor views.

Look for the words “kuminda krioyo”’ to partake in authentic Curacaoan fare. The best place to do so is at Plaza Bieu (The Old Market), a no-frills food court manned by legendary home cooks. Locals lineup here for rich ‘sopis’ (soups) and hearty ‘stobas’ (stews) made with goat and even cactus, and chow down on big portions of reasonably priced specials like whole fried fish served with traditional sides of funchi, rice, and fried plantains, and don’t miss pumpkin pancakes for dessert! “Batidos”, fresh fruit shakes originating in South America, are another local favourite.
La Boheme takes it up a notch as a streetside smoothie bar offering fresh fruit shakes, green concoctions, and modern favorites like Nutella smoothies. Boho6 Terrace is another favored street front gathering spot, their ‘Island Soul Stew’ is Curacao comfort fusion food in a bowl. At night, take it to the next-level creative gourmet at Cascada Rooftop Bar & Kitchen for terrific tapas around an infinity pool with a stellar view, too.
