Welcome to Summer Huntsville! I know many of you have been vacation or are planning your next summer trip. I hope you are able to take some time off and recharge yourselves. I’ve come to the notion we are all working at frantic paces these days and time off to rest is a necessity. Trying to find the balance between family, work and play can be difficult. Maybe that notion just comes with age. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 and that is a BIG DEAL here in the Rocket City. Just 50 short years ago history was made. And to commemorate that achievement there are many events, especially in the month of July in and around town. The sold-out Apollo Homecoming Dinner is July, along with the Celebration Car Show at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. There will be Dancing in the Streets July 19th and a concert on July 20th to celebrate the Lunar Landing Day. Visit huntsville.org, the Huntsville Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau site for details of each event, which take place at several locations around town, from the Space and Rocket Center, Downtown Huntsville and even at Lowe Mill. In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 we feature two distinguished citizens of our community. Dennis Keim, a longtime resident and previous photographer for NASA during the Shuttle program; and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Director Jody Singer. I’m excited to have these two individuals featured in EVENT – especially during the Apollo celebrations.

Editor’s Note

It’s finally summertime in the South, and I hope you’re enjoying a slower pace and perhaps a trip or two to celebrate. Summer brings so many opportunities to be outside and find adventures, on the hiking trail, on the river or in your own backyard. With backyards (and front yards, and front doors and windows) in mind, one of your summer adventures may be buying or selling a home. Our featured editorial, The Real Deal, highlights a number of real estate professionals in the Huntsville area who are experts in their field and can offer the highest level of service. With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in July, we shine our Spotlight on Jody Singer, director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. At Centerstage is photographer Dennis Keim who spent his career at NASA, photographing historic moments and working among astronauts. Event season has been at an all-time high, with chances to get involved with the charities and organizations that work to make our home a better, kinder and more generous place to live. From the Red Cross Gala to the Heart Ball, Claws for a Cause and the Spring Swing, we have been snapping photos to showcase in this issue. When you’re checking out who was “flamingling” at the Crescen Dough Auction, don’t forget to take note of the advertisers within these pages. They are the reason we are able to raise awareness for the nonprofit and community organizations doing so much good. Shop in their stores, eat at their tables, utilize their services – and don’t forget to tell them you saw them right here in EVENT. Here’s to Summer in Huntsville,

The Huntsville Museum of Art Guild hosted an evening of glitz and glam 1920’s style for their annual fundraiser on April 4, to celebrate the opening of HMA’s exhibition Our Shared Heritage. The Guild has been a major supporter of HMA for over 50 years and has provided over two and a half million dollars in direct funding from Guild sponsored events such as the Annual Wine Weekend, Leaves of Glass, Folk Fusion, Southern Blues, and more. Around 300 guests munched on fare by Mezza Luna and enjoyed music by the Bacchuneers. The evening’s platinum sponsor was Redstone Federal Credit Union. “The HMA Guild once again showed us how they put the fun in fundraising by hosting UNFRAMED: The Eve of Prohibition, the swankiest underground party where guests could speak easy and laugh hard. After entering with the secret password, “Last Call,” attendees were ready to rock 2019 by roaring 1920!” said Jennifer Wu, HMA Guild’s Communications Cochair. n

In my industry, people ask me all the time, “How’s the market?” I am happy to say that it’s a great time to buy and sell! We see multiple offers on countless properties with lots of competition, our local inventory of homes is low, and we still have buyers looking. All that adds up to a market that is always in need of homes to sell. Many investors have been interested in this market for a while and they are still buying homes at a rapid pace as well. Some are being “flipped” and many are being held as rental properties for long-term investments. They are staying rented with new families and professionals moving to the area. The Huntsville Area Association of REALTORS® reported 688 homes sold in April, with an average of 43 days on market. To put that in perspective, a home sold in April of 2018 was on the market for an average of 61 days. Not only are homes selling faster than they were a year ago, the average sale price has increased $10,000 from April 2018 to April 2019. The new local average sales price is $233,190 and this trend has been gaining momentum every week – and we expect the market to stay strong. I was recently asked to explain what the public doesn’t know about being a REALTOR®: Buying a home is not like buying a home on TV. It’s not as simple, it’s not as fast, and my clients like to look at more than three houses before making a decision. Those shows are fun to watch, but as a REALTOR® I take my job very seriously and work very hard to make sure my clients achieve their goals. Your home is typically the largest investment you will make, and it’s important to work with a professional that can help you maximize the potential of that investment. Each time I have a client relocating to Huntsville or Madison and I give them a tour of the community, they usually have the same type of comments to offer. My favorite is; “I had no idea you had all this available.” I take a great amount of pride in these tours and showing off all we have to offer – from a constantly growing downtown district, to Lowe Mill, to Ditto Marina, to Bridge Street, to MidCity, and countless other developments on the horizon. I am very proud to call Huntsville my home and thankful for the opportunity to have a wonderful business and raise our family in this community.

What inspired you to get into this business? I’ve always been drawn to the concept of “home” - that idea in which the four walls and roof become a living, breathing participant in our life story; a place where babies take first steps, where first kisses take place, where all laugh, bathe, eat and dream. I also found, once I returned home from college, I had a knack for real estate. The fiduciary service part was easy - I had witnessed my own parents serving others in real estate my entire life - but skills and business knowledge were modeled, trained and developed over the years. I’m always learning and working to improve my skills, which keeps the day-to-day experiences fresh and interesting. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? I remember sending 52 photographs years ago via dial-up modem to a client in Boston. It took forever and seems like the dark ages compared to how quickly information transmits our robust listing visuals today! Although the technology makes the buyer search experience better, it can give a false impression of a home being better or worse than it is in actuality. I often take relocating buyers to the home they love most online to rule it in or out, which helps ensure other possibilities are duly considered. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? Don’t put yourself in the way of the transaction. Sometimes, this is hard because we all have human responses to the situations surrounding our real estate dealings, but we have to put ourselves in the background and focus on what is best for the client. Our VV&W brokers encourage us to serve the client first, always. What sets you apart as an agent? I know great real estate agents in Huntsville and am proud of the association we have through the Board of REALTORS®, but a client will be hard pressed to find an agent who will work as hard or care as much as I do. This profession is how I have chosen to live my life, serve the community and provide for family. That perspective and professionalism allows me to provide exceptional client experience. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? The shift in “hot” areas and redevelopment always fascinates me. In studying Huntsville history, it is evident in the shifts from downtown to the Parkway in the 50’s and now back to downtown. But the redevelopment and reinvention of Lowe Mill, Stovehouse, Stone Middle School/Campus 805 and the former Grissom High complex is so exciting to me because it displays clever innovation through renovation. The idea that our history doesn’t have to be destroyed to be reimagined is very appealing to me. What do you love about being a real estate agent? I love that moment when you pass the keys to a client at the culmination of the closing and see their faces light up. Also, getting invited back later to see how they’ve made it their own. I love to see the story of “home” as it continues to evolve.

Would you like to share a client review? “Sarah Lauren knows Huntsville! Her perspective on neighborhoods, community history, and real estate trends was so valuable in our decision-making process. After working with Sarah Lauren, I have a new appreciation for the importance of working with a high-level real estate professional. Sarah Lauren’s leadership and knowledge helped us to feel comfortable and we can’t imagine having a better experience with both the sale of one home and the purchase of another.” -Adam B.

JulieLockwood Broker Associate/REALTOR®, VanValkenburgh & Wilkinson Properties, Inc. Licensed at 19 years old, Julie V. Lockwood has worked in the field of real estate her entire adult life. Through the years, Julie has worked tirelessly to give back to the community and the industry through service. She is also a past president of the Junior League of Huntsville, the Women’s Guild of the Huntsville Museum of Art and Birmingham-Southern College National Alumni Association. A 7th generation Huntsvillian, she has seen Huntsville’s growth through the years. Julie will celebrate her 26th wedding anniversary in July with her husband, attorney, Robert Lockwood. What inspired you to get into this business? Family. I never planned on selling real estate but got my license when I was 19...just in case. My parents said it would always be good to have my license “just in case” I ever decided to sell real estate. When I graduated from college, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do and ended up activating my license and going to work. The part-time gig ended up being the best decision I could have made! How would you advise someone trying to save money by selling/buying on their own? The real estate industry is a fast-paced market with many changes. Keeping up with the changes in the industry for buyers and sellers is part of my job. I try to educate a buyer or seller about the process and some of the advantages or disadvantages to a real estate transaction. In many instances, a home sale or purchase is the largest investment you will ever undertake. Finding the right REALTOR® for your needs sometimes is part of the journey. If you aren’t working with a REALTOR® you trust to guide you through that process, expensive or stressful surprises can occur. Between the contractual details, the inspection repairs, finding contractors to complete work, managing the loan process, and finally getting to closing, I am engaged and oversee details that most buyers or sellers don’t have the time or knowledge to undertake. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? Be honest and work well with others. Honesty is always the best policy, but it can be awkward if not handled well. Certain real estate truths can sometimes be hard for buyers and sellers to hear. I believe in direct and honest communication so that buyers and sellers can make an informed decision. Our industry is a cooperative network of REALTORS® coming together to share information to over 2700 REALTORS® in the area. This works to the benefit of the entire area because buyers and sellers have access. This cooperative network allows sellers to have the most competitive prices and terms and allows buyers to see all the great opportunities. Without this access to information and good cooperation between REALTORS® in our area, the entire real estate market would decline. What do you love about this area? I love that we have rocket scientists and cotton farmers. I love that we have Bridge Street Shopping and Land Trust trails. I love that we have the river and Research Park. This is my complex and diverse home. I can drive to Nashville or Atlanta for a quick weekend trip and, driving back towards Monte Sano Mountain and Downtown Huntsville, I know that I am “home.” As quirky as this may sound, it is almost a spiritual feeling for me. I love Huntsville, Alabama. What do you love about being a real estate agent? I have been in real estate for almost 30 years. During that time, my practice has evolved and expanded. For instance, I have a buyer client, a young bachelor, who used my services to purchase a home. A few years later, I helped sell that home for the client when he met the love of his life and wanted to start a family. As their family continued to grow, I helped them expand to an even larger home. They then referred their friends and family in order to have those loved ones closer to the family. I value that trusted seat at this family’s table as they grow and shape within our community. This is just one reason I love my job and all that it has to offer.

What inspired you to get into this business? I wanted to help others achieve their dreams of home ownership and focus on Veterans and their families. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? It allows more freedom to work remotely but the downside can be the inability to make that connection and have a one-on-one relationship with the client… as almost everyone solely communicates by email. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? Having a REALTOR® is one of the most important aspects of buying a house. As the #1 originator in Alabama I have the opportunity to work with many – there are so many things that clients may miss out on without an agent and their representation. It’s the largest purchase consumers make, and I cannot comprehend doing it alone. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? Find a niche and be an expert on that – don’t try to be an expert in everything. My niche, because of my family lifestyle, naturally became new construction and VA loans. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Think of all clients as your only one – focus on them, let them know they are important and always be the same person you proclaim to be when no one is watching. What sets you apart? Tough question and might be easier for others to answer. I would like to think honesty, integrity and true loyalty set me apart from others in business. What opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? Growth in jobs, demand for more homes. What do you love about this area? I love the family feeling of Huntsville, it is also a great central location to Nashville, Atlanta, the mountains or the beach. I also love the high quality but low cost of living. What do you love about your job? I love helping others get to a better place.

What inspired you to get into this business? My inspiration has always been my loving parents, Vance and Bernadean Mefford, who taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance. I consider my mentor in this business to be Tommy Adams, owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Rise Real Estate. I started out as a real estate assistant to the very best in the business! He is still a rock star and my biggest fan! How have the internet/social media changed the way you work? Is there a downside? The internet and social media have given our industry a larger advantage than ever to market our services. Of course; however, I still enjoy and feel it is best to get out there and shake hands and give a personal touch to your valuable clients and potential clients that are nearby. Personal is still better to me, however the internet and social media is where it is today! What sets you apart? Attention to detail and a good work ethic. My business philosophy is: Always do what you say you are going to do. Be fully committed and provide excellent service. Jenny Shaneyfel t Licensed REALTOR®, Engel & Völkers® Huntsville Jenny was born and raised in Huntsville, Ala. and graduated from Huntsville High School, the same building as her dad, Larry Beddingfield. She was saved and baptized at Whitesburg Baptist Church the same place where her four siblings were also baptized. Jenny received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and her master’s degree from the University of Alabama. She was a teacher for seven years, but during that time she flipped and remodeled many homes helping her family in the real estate market in Huntsville and surrounding areas. Jenny’s grandfather and father had a big part in building many of the landmarks in Huntsville including the Burritt Museum, Madison County Courthouse, and Twickenham Station. Jenny has recently been named as the principal broker for one of the world’s leading service companies for Luxury Real Estate, Engel & Völkers Huntsville. Engel & Völkers Huntsville’s grand opening will be in early July. Jenny’s life and work motto can be found in the same place, The Message translation of Romans 15:1-5, which says, “Strength is for Service not status, each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking How can I help?”

What inspired you to get into this business? My grandfather was a builder, my dad was a Commercial and Residential General Contractor, and my mother was a REALTOR® my entire life. They inspired me to love real estate. How long have you been in the business? My entire life. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? I work toward helping people and being genuine. I think social media helps me be more transparent and personable, as many of my customers can see I’m a real person with a family. I think the internet makes it a lot easier to do less face time and a lot is missed when you’re not face-to-face with your customers. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible save money by selling/ buying on their own? I would tell them good luck, and I genuinely hope they do save a lot of money. Anyone who has worked with me knows better and is grateful for the hard work I put into finding their dream home. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? I haven’t received a lot of advice. There aren’t many realtors who are willing to share their secrets. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? This industry is about serving other people, not making money. We all need to make money but if you focus on helping people the money will follow. You won’t always close the deal you worked so hard for, but it will come around, don’t you worry. What sets you apart as an agent? My background in real estate, my education as an educator and my genuine desire to help people. I think because I have a master’s degree in education, it gives me tools to help people understand the buying and selling process so that the transaction is smooth. Einstein said, “if you can’t explain it simply you don’t understand it well enough,” so having an extensive background in real estate helps me to not only give excellent advice but to make the process simple. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? Wow, so much growth. I’m so proud to be a native Huntsvillian and to be part of such a thriving community. What do you love about this area? My grandmother has always said that Huntsville is blessed by God, and I believe it. I’ve lived in other places before and I’ve never felt the same comfort as here; but then again maybe that’s just the feeling of home. What do you love about being a real estate agent? I LOVE houses! My mom, my sisters and I look at empty homes on our days off. We love to dream about how to remodel the homes and give them a facelift. We are so good at it that it’s an unbelievable feeling of accomplishment to simply look at a home and imagine the beautifully designed end-result.

Anne Adams Principal Broker Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Rise Real Estate Anne Adams is a Huntsville native who grew up in the real estate business. She is the daughter of Tommy and Jimmie Adams who founded Rise Real Estate in 1983. Anne’s interest in real estate began at an early age and she started attending state and national real estate conferences at the age of 17, after obtaining her Real Estate License at the age of 19, Anne has been a REALTOR® serving Huntsville and North Alabama for over 30 years. She has worked in all aspects of real estate including residential, commercial and new construction. She has been honored with numerous awards and has earned GRI (Graduate of the Real Estate Institute) and CRS (Certified Residential Specialist) designations. She has also served on many local and state committees with Huntsville Area Association of REALTORS® and the Alabama Association of REALTORS®, including her recent role serving a two-year term as a State Director for the Alabama Association of REALTORS®. In 2017, Anne facilitated the merger between Rise Real Estate and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices to form Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Rise Real Estate. Anne serves as the principal broker for the newly formed entity. Her leadership and direction carry her parent’s early vision while adapting to the ever-changing real estate industry.

What inspired you to get into this business? Growing up with parents in this business, plus attending real estate conferences, inspired me early-on. My parents are my mentors who always have and continue to influence and inspire me. Now my children, Kacie Butler and Adam Bourque are my biggest cheerleaders. How have the internet/social media changed the way you work? Is there a downside? It has changed the way we work because so many buyers are searching for homes online, and they’re viewing homes online, there are fewer physical home showings than in the past. The downside of the internet is that, as a REALTOR® you don’t have as much faceto-face interaction. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? There are a lot of hiccups that can happen during the transaction process. Someone who doesn’t have the experience and training may not be equipped to handle those types of situations. You really need to have a professional agent on hand to take care of problems that may arise. Another aspect to consider is safety. If you sell your home without utilizing the services of a real estate professional, you invite strangers into your home. If you’re working with a professional REALTOR®, they will be bringing only pre-qualified buyers into your home. What sets you apart? Even though we are a state-of-the-art company, with cutting-edge technology and a fast-paced environment, we are still a family business, and I think that shows in the way we operate. It’s my goal to continue to build on that tradition. From our very first meeting to the final closing, we will provide you with best-in-class service to help you buy or sell a home. What do you love about this area? I love the mountains. I love the lakes. I especially love the people. What do you love about being a real estate professional? Teaching other real estate agents to succeed.

She and her business partners, Dena and Jim Hoekenschnieder, envisioned opening a small boutique real estate company. They have worked hard to cultivate a familial environment and that camaraderie has helped Legend grow to over 155 agents in less than seven years. What inspired you to be a real estate agent/get in this business? After I retired from teaching, I still wanted a career where I was helping families and meeting people from all over the United States. Real estate seemed like an industry that fit what I wanted to do in a second career. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? Buyers are now much more knowledgeable about the real estate market and the new trends in what is popular and what amenities bring the highest price. Some of my clients will look online and send me the homes they want to view instead of me searching and sending them homes to see. I also think HGTV has had an influence on buyers and sellers. What would you tell someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? I don’t think everyone realizes the research, marketing, negotiating and knowledge that goes into selling or buying a home. As a real estate professional, I guide you through the entire home search or selling process. We market your home, evaluate and negotiate offers, work through inspections, set up closings, as well as making sure purchasers are qualified with a local mortgage lender. We help you through the entire transaction to ensure a successful closing. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Treat all your clients like family. Remember, the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra. What sets you apart? I try to exceed my clients’ expectations and go the extra mile for them. We think personal touch and communication is very important, whether you are working with buyers or sellers. My assistant, Paula Wilbourn, is also a licensed REALTOR®, and she is the BEST! We have been friends for over 40 years, and she has worked for me for seven years. We were both born and raised in Huntsville, so we definitely know the area. But when you love your job and the people you work with, it no longer seems like “work.” What do you love about this area? I love the people! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming to new families moving into the area. There are plenty of outdoor activities throughout the year and things for kids and young professionals to do. The downtown has also become more revitalized. What do you love about being a real estate agent? I love watching the excitement and happiness on my client’s faces when they move into their new home. I love helping people work through challenges to reach a goal that they have set for themselves. I am always learning, and I do my best to give my clients the highest level of service. We have so many referrals from past clients and that is the BEST compliment we can get from someone.

She is hard-working and passionate about finding her clients the perfect place to call home. Her patience and dedication to real estate allows her to help even the most novice of home buyers. She wants her clients to make the most informed decision to ensure their satisfaction. Though real estate is her number one priority, she knows what it takes to enjoy life! Whether it is grabbing a cup of coffee to get to know you or to start the search for your dream home, call Jamie today!

What inspired you to get into this business? Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest life decisions. I wanted to be able to help people in this process and show them that they have someone they can trust. How long have you been in the business? I have been in real estate for three years. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? I believe social media is such a great tool as a REALTOR®. It gives me the ability to constantly stay in front of my sphere of influence and give people helpful tools and tricks for home buying and selling. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? A common misconception is that a REALTOR’S® job is easy. In reality it takes a lot of diligence and research to price homes for sale and figure out an offer price to purchase. Those who choose to sell by owner get an average of 16% less for their home. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? Patience and perseverance are so important to keep in your heart and head. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? It is better to slowly grow your business by being honest and ethical instead of trying to be a salesperson. Having my clients’ best interest in mind even if it hurts me is my number one priority. What sets you apart as an agent? I take the time to build genuine and trusting relationships with every single one of my clients. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? Just in the last year alone, we have had so many changes in our market. It has turned into a seller’s market, making it very competitive for buyers. Finding an investment property can be difficult at this time, but it can be very rewarding! What do you love about this area? I love the constant growth that is happening in the Huntsville and Madison area. Our city and our representatives are always striving to make our city the best it can be while bringing more work AND play to us! What do you love about being a real estate agent? I love being able to assist someone in purchasing a home who thought it could never be possible. To be able to help give someone the gift of a home is so rewarding.

Would you like to share a client review? “Jamie helped me buy my first home and was extremely helpful. As a first-time homebuyer, I did not know very much but she helped walk me through the process. She was patient and never made me feel pressured or rushed to make any decisions. My closing date kept getting pushed out and Jamie was sure to keep me in the loop about what was happening. She helped me coordinate events needed for closing while I was out of town for work. Jamie is knowledgeable and personable, and I would definitely recommend her.” -Todd B

Michael Tincher REALTOR®/Owner, Capstone Realty Michael Tincher is a Huntsville native, returning to Huntsville after graduating college with a bachelor’s in finance. His first job was working with a new real estate company selling new home construction. Soon after realizing his personality did not mesh well with sitting in a model home, he moved to a different real estate company where he worked under veteran REALTORS®. Michael then met some young guys that were starting like he was. They began growing their knowledge and love for their job. In 2009 they opened Capstone Realty and have been loving every day since! Today Capstone Realty is ranked second in sales volume out of nearly 200 offices in Huntsville/Madison. In 2018 Capstone Realty won Huntsville Madison County Chamber’s Professional Services Business of the Year award. Capstone Realty has also been recognized on Real Trends Up-and-Comers list. Michael’s experience in new home construction, flipping houses, and 14 years of being in the business has allowed him to be successful in helping his clients buy and sell properties of all conditions and prices.

What inspired you to get into this business? My father was my inspiration in getting in real estate. He was flipping houses before it was a tv show. I grew up painting or cleaning up on projects he had. I loved the process of the before-and-after. At a young age, I was exposed to seeing how happy a family was in buying a home. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? Social media has definitely changed how I work or market in my business. Marketing on Facebook and Instagram has been very successful for my business. I have received positive responses by posting new listings, happy clients, or tips in the buying and selling process. The internet has changed the mindset of our customers. With the ease of access of information on homes, customers can have an inaccurate depiction of the market. When I’m buying a vehicle, I do not go online and read how an engine works and then assume I know what I’m looking at when I see a prospective purchase. Rather, I go to a reliable dealership that has gone through the process to make sure what I’m buying is in working order and has a history of having happy customers. The same should go for those looking to purchase a home. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? I’m all for my clients saving money, but not using a REALTOR® can have the opposite effect. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, 87% of all purchasers used a real estate agent, and not being able to reach them can be detrimental to getting your house sold. Statistics are available showing that selling a home by-owner results in lower net profit while having to put in more work and effort. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? Treat every contract as if it was your family buying or selling. What sets you apart as an agent? I will not say I am better than any other agent because there are a lot of great real estate agents in our area. I do try to make the process a fun and exciting one, as it should be! My experience in flipping homes gives me a great knowledge of understanding condition of properties, estimating renovations or repairs; plus staging a home for today’s buyers allows me to best advise my clients whether buying or selling. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? The real estate market in Huntsville has recently been extremely competitive. We are seeing more multiple offer situations than ever before. With the national news Huntsville is receiving and all of the new jobs bringing new families to the area, inventory is low, and demand is high. Would you like to share a client review? “When I first called Michael to talk with him about selling my home, he scheduled a meeting that same day, demonstrating an eagerness and knowledge of the market that appealed to me. Throughout the sales process, he remained responsive and treated me with courtesy, kindness, and integrity. I especially appreciated his advocacy for me following the home inspection; he convinced the buyer to accept my response to her request for repairs without any dickering. I respect and trust Michael and recommend him highly. He is a ‘good egg’ and a consummate professional who makes things happen.” -Stephanie

Paige Brown REALTOR®, RE/MAX Alliance As a native to the North Alabama area, Paige has had the opportunity to see Huntsville grow into a thriving, diverse community. Paige’s focus in the community is to provide a team of talented, qualified individuals to those with real estate needs. As a REALTOR®, she believes that each client deserves a meaningful, low stress experience while they make an incredibly important investment in buying or selling their home. For the past three years, Paige’s goal in her business has been to show that she cares. Paige is proud to be a part of RE/MAX Alliance in Huntsville. After marrying her high school sweetheart Justin in 2004, Paige graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a degree in Psychology. In 2012, the birth of their daughter, Shelby, added even more light to their lives. They currently reside in the South Huntsville area with their dogs Chewy and Libby and their cat Jack.

What inspired you to get into this business? We experienced a few transactions of our own that did not go as planned. From that, I realized I wanted to do something that could potentially keep other people from having to go through that. The home buying process should be a happy one and I wanted other people to get that experience from someone who cares about that. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Social media and internet have drastically shaped our world. A million ideas and opportunities are only a few clicks or taps on your phone away. Social media offers a portal to the world that we wouldn’t otherwise have. It’s so easy to make connections with new people because of social media. I have been able to connect and serve so many clients because of those connections. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? It is important to have an expert in your corner during important times in your life. If you needed surgery, you’d choose a qualified, experienced surgeon to make sure it was done properly. If you needed legal advice, you’d choose a lawyer with experience and specialization in your area of need. The same is true for real estate. I am here to help protect your biggest asset, make sure everything goes smoothly, and ensure that you are treated fairly in the process. You need a specialist in the area that cares about the outcome of the deal as well as your needs. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? This is not a part-time venture. In order to adequately serve your clients in this business, you need to be all-in and able to assist around the clock. It is a full-time commitment to provide quality results. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? The team of people, systems, and processes that make everything work in the background are of highest importance. Without that, you run a greater risk of important details falling through the cracks. Having such a system in place is imperative to make sure everything goes according to plan. What sets you apart? I’m a unicorn – a native Huntsvillian, a fairly rare identifier. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to see this city thrive and grow into an incredible place to work and live. I am also in a perfect position to better serve my clients because I have known this city all my life and have witnessed the remarkable new things that have come to the area. What do you love about this area? The diversity of cultures and people that the space program and Redstone Arsenal have brought into the area have become the heartbeat of North Alabama. I am thrilled and proud to be able to raise my daughter in a place where there are lots of diverse people, cultures, and experiences right in her hometown. Pat West REALTOR®, RE/MAX Alliance Pat West has been serving the real estate needs of North Alabama and South Central Tennessee communities for over forty years. Pat was named to the RE/MAX Hall of Fame and the Huntsville/ Madison County Builder’s Association Hall of Fame. She currently serves as President for the HMCBA Foundation Board and spent three terms as President of the Association’s Women’s Council. Pat has also served many years on the Board of Operation Green Team, helping to keep Huntsville and the surrounding area a true symbol of Alabama the Beautiful. While accolades are nice, Pat believes the best part of her work is in service to others and helping each unique client find just the right place to call home. Originally from Jackson, Tenn., Pat learned the value of perseverance at an early age, having been inspired by her mother’s work ethic. She applies those values in her daily goals of supporting people in their home-buying/selling journey. Pat’s hobbies include raising horses and trying to manage the feeding habits of her four dogs. She is the proud mom of two sons and two stepsons. She is married to the multi-awardwinning homebuilder, Chester West.

What inspired you to get into this business? I found myself as a single mother in my mid-twenties. I discovered that real estate was a great way to carve out a path of independence for myself. It afforded me a somewhat flexible schedule while I was still raising my kids. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? It’s certainly possible to feel like selling your home on your own could cost less – assuming we’re just talking about paying commissions. People do it successfully every day. My feeling is that it’s all about value. As a home seller, do you have the time and energy to place and run ads? Do you have the time to meet people to show them your home at their convenience? Do you like the idea of receiving inquires by phone and email 24/7? Do you understand the legal and financial ramifications of a large transaction? These are just a few of the things a professional REALTOR® will do for their clients, whether buying or selling. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? To listen. And to understand it’s not about me. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Same as above! What do you love about this area? Having been in Huntsville since 1970, I’ve seen a lot of change. However, the thing that remains the most appealing to me is the nature we are surrounded by. Our family loves getting out on the river or riding horses through the woods. But I also love the nightlife! We have a fantastic music scene and I really hope that people appreciate how lucky we are to have so many talented musicians as well as venues that support their live performance. What do you love about being a real estate agent/professional? I know I’ve said this before, but the best thing is seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they’re handed the keys to their new home. A home is a symbol of so many things – safety, family, and investment – but most of all, I think about all of the warm memories that are created that will last a lifetime. Would you like to share a client review? “I had the privilege of working with Pat West to find our home. I have worked with many agents in the past and have had great experiences. But never have I had the exceptional experience I had with Pat. She spent weeks driving us all over Huntsville to find the perfect home. Once we found it, she went above and beyond ensuring all was perfect. Relocating to a new area where we knew no one was challenging. I can’t count the times I called on Pat for information, directions and advice. She was always there for me and remains so today. A true professional. She is dedicated, caring, knowledgeable, loyal, trustworthy and always gives 110%. I was so fortunate to find this incredible person. Without her, I don’t know how I would have managed the move to Huntsville!” -Glenette B

Brenda B. Elliott CEO/Broker/Owner, Weichert, REALTORS® - The Space Place Brenda Bradley Elliott was born in Athens, Ga. where her dad was in school at the University of Georgia. She grew up in Covington, Ga., then followed in her dad’s footsteps (as did her three brothers) attending the University of Georgia, where she got her BFA in Interior Design. After graduation, Brenda had the opportunity to fly for Delta Airlines and see the world for several years, before she went against family tradition and married a Georgia Tech graduate, Paul Elliott, then an Army Aviator. Brenda quips, “The only difficult thing about marrying a Georgia Tech man was Thanksgiving weekend when the Dawgs played the Yellow Jackets!” Brenda and Paul followed the Army’s relocation opportunities across the world while raising their daughters, Erica, Alicia, and Andrea. While Paul was stationed at the Pentagon, Brenda began her real estate career with Weichert, Realtors in Northern Virginia and learned how being an Army wife fit perfectly to the real estate industry. Upon Paul’s retirement from the Army, they settled in Huntsville, where Brenda started her real estate company, Paul started his defense consulting and their daughters went on to graduate from Huntsville High. When the Elliott family was asked the ultimate question, “Auburn or Alabama?” they originally had no opinion, but eventually their three daughters answered that question (as well as the UGA vs Georgia Tech conundrum,) as all three graduated from Auburn University. Brenda says that although she wasn’t born and bred in this area, she truly did get here as soon as she could and loves it every day!

What inspired you to get into this business? I actually got into this business to learn from inside the industry what makes a house sell or keeps it from selling so that I could use that knowledge in my interior design business. But then I fell in love with this business and have never wanted to leave it! How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? You absolutely can buy or sell on your own but be careful of the pitfalls. It is our job as real estate professionals to keep up with the changing regulations and laws and sellers are responsible for the same thing as well as marketing for their home. Having a professional that can objectively represent you and the negotiations of the transaction most often results in a higher net than you can negotiate on your own. As far as buyers are concerned in this state that remains caveat emptor, buyers need representation so their best interests are protected. And of course, our industry has the best guarantee of all...we don’t get paid unless buyers’ and sellers’ goals are met! What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Keep your priorities in order! If you don’t have balance with faith, family, rest, and recreation, everything else will suffer. What do you love about this area? As a transplant to this area, I love the melting pot that we are. This area draws from all corners of the world and from every demographic. You aren’t looked at as a stranger when you move here, just a friend we don’t know yet! I love the commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and the commitment to excellence. And one of my favorite things about this area is how supportive the population has always been and continues to be for our troops and our country! We truly are proud to be Americans in North Alabama! What do you love about being a real estate agent? Being a real estate professional has given me the opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives. From the first client I worked with who was moving to the DC area and was scared to death, to the family that was reuniting after an extended deployment in Afghanistan, to the divorced battered woman, to the family with the newly adopted child that spoke no English, to the single soldier wanting to find “home,” to the new agent that wants to better her life by starting a real estate career, to the staff member who wants to not only make a living but wants to belong and everyone in between... Real estate has certainly enriched my life by allowing me to play a small part in the lives of others and I am so grateful!

Brooke Brunsvold REALTOR®, eXp Realty Brooke moved to Huntsville, Ala. from Muscle Shoals in 1992. Since then, real estate has been an integral part of her working experience. From investing, to flipping, to starting a property management company, her passion for real estate has been fulfilled through various means. She traded all of that to start a family and raise her two sons, now 13 and 11. Four years ago they began the adventure of homeschooling. Her boys have grown up in the real estate industry. It is Brooke’s intention to educate them in each aspect of the business with the hopes of building a legacy to pass on to them. In addition to her career in real estate Brooke has spent the last five years chairing and co-chairing community fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations such as Not One More Alabama and Kids to Love. Brooke has built her business primarily through referrals and repeat clientele. She credits honesty, professionalism, client advocacy and integrity to the trust she establishes with her clients early-on and enjoys nurturing these relationships beyond the closing tables. She has recently joined eXp Realty, the first cloud-based real estate brokerage, and the first and only real estate brokerage to operate as one company-owned brokerage in all 50 states. It is one of the fastest growing real estate brokerage firms in North America.

What inspired you to get into this business? Since the mid 90’s real estate has had my attention, initially with investing – which led to starting my own property management company. When I took a break to have my two boys, I couldn’t wait to start a project again once they were in school. However, the market was saturated with investors when I returned to the workforce and it just wasn’t an option for me. Instead, I got my real estate license and have thoroughly enjoyed every moment since. Though the transaction is much different, and each one has unique challenges, I do enjoy getting to know my clients and helping them buy and sell their homes. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? Theoretically, not paying commissions can only result in more money in the seller’s pocket, right? However, there is so much more to the process. Pricing it correctly is critical but only a single factor to consider. Without the current and accurate market data regarding recently sold properties, how could an individual determine the right price point accurately and confidently? As REALTORS®, we are not only privy to information such as the actual condition of the home at the time of the sale, but often seller motivation provides insight, and a more complete big picture, which is important. So typically, sellers are pleasantly surprised at what they can ask for and get for their home and in a relatively short period of time. After all, it will be priced to sell. What sets you apart? Clear communication, integrity, honesty, professionalism and client advocacy set me apart from some in the industry. The code of ethics and standards of practice of the National Association of REALTORS® establish the standards of conduct among REALTORS® but the etiquette, courtesy, and trust are established as a result of the individual realtor. Paramount to this is a good connection and working relationship with other industry professionals such as lenders, bankers, attorneys, title managers, inspectors, appraisers, and contractors – laying the foundation for a smooth, less stressful experience and successful real estate transaction. What do you love about this area? Definitely the diversity. Whether it’s shopping, activities, restaurants, or the ethnicity of our population, we have variety covered. Also, for me, Huntsville has always had just what I needed in every arena, without being too large of a metropolis and without having to travel to find something not found locally. Growing with the times and the trends is great and necessary, and to me Huntsville is doing that. Every day I learn of something new in my town, keeping it fun and fresh. It’s my city, and I am so proud to call it home. I love to share it with ones who choose to visit or relocate here. What do you love about being a real estate agent/professional? It’s like an adventure for me. No matter how difficult, or how smooth, in the end, another family that has become a part of my proverbial tribe, ends up with their dream home or the ability to move on to the next chapter of their lives. It’s always exciting and so meaningful to me, to be a part of their plan and to know I helped them reach their goals.

Robin Gerrish REALTOR®, Crye-Leike, REALTORS® Robin entered the real estate industry in 2006 and has been a member of the Crye-Leike Multi-Million Dollar Club since 2011. As a MOM (Military On The Move) specialist, she has had the joy of finding or selling homes for career military members who are retiring; those on active duty; as well as wounded warriors. She chooses to give 20% of her commission at close-of-sale to these three groups of service personnel as an expression of honor for their service.

What inspired you to get into this business? I have found that examples provided by family members have played a significant part in encouraging me to become an entrepreneur. My grandmother, Effie Mae Martin, was an inspiration as a business owner. She turned the family’s loss of the family farm due to Eminent Domain during World War II, into a business opportunity by building what would be the area’s first convenience store. Grannie Martin was a great example of a businesswoman, contributing to the positive growth of her community. What’s the most important piece advice you would give about your business? Being a REALTOR® is also being an entrepreneur, and success is measured not by dollars but by how you strengthen the area in which you live. What sets you apart? I believe that education, experience, certifications and awards are extremely important markers for success. I appreciate the words of one of my clients, who said, “Robin demonstrates professionalism, respect, honesty and integrity in everything she does. We went through 19 houses throughout the greater Huntsville area, and Robin’s understanding of her clients came through with a recommendation to look in the Midtowne development. The 21st house is where we now live. The process was seamless and as pain free as one could imagine.” -Nate H What do you love about your job? Match making. As a REALTOR®, I have the opportunity to play a role in assisting my clients in discovering their perfect real estate match. Receiving messages such as the following makes the long hours so worthwhile: “Robin, is fantastic! She was our REALTOR® for both selling and buying of our homes. Robin was always available for showings and was with us for every inspection and walk through. She offered very helpful advice and answered every question we had. Robin is the perfect REALTOR®.” -Sherry and Mike C “Thank you so very much for helping us find and purchase our new lake view property in the Brigadoon community. We have always enjoyed working with you and found you to be very patient and seem to have a wealth of knowledge in your reservoir. Your knowledge and expertise of the real estate market is outstanding. We will, and do, always recommend you to anyone looking to buy or sell properties in the North Alabama area. We will always consider you a part of our close-knit family and friends circle. Thank you for being you!” -Billy & Sherry P

REALTOR®, The Gifford Group Bob Gifford has been a top-producing REALTOR® since his first year in the business, 33 years ago. After accepting an invitation to join Keller Williams, Bob has been delighted to be a part of such very special family ever since. He and his stellar team love helping clients invest in real estate by advising and supporting them every step of the way home. Bob Gifford has lived in Huntsville since 1960. He loved growing up here (a very happy childhood) and still enjoys visiting his friends from school. His love of flute-playing started in junior high and he went on to major in music with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees where he studied with many of the great flute players of the time. He served as principal flute of the Washington, D.C. Navy Band as well as the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, satisfying his military obligation. On moving back to Huntsville, he started at M & S Computing and became a manager after it become Intergraph. He performed with the Huntsville Symphony and later served on the Board of Directors.

What inspired you to get into this business? My friend, Roy Claytor (also my REALTOR® at the time) convinced me, 33 years ago to go into the business and “the rest is history.” How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Internet has made the real estate business infinitely better. You can list your property, negotiate and sell it electronically no matter where you are. Also, the records are forever and instantly available. Is there a downside? I see no downside whatsoever. How would you advise someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? It’s highly unlikely you will get more money going on your own: Statistics from the National Association of REALTORS® clearly show this fact. You are going to have to take whoever comes along but my team and I would “sell” it first to literally thousands of REALTORS® who in turn can bring you many, many more prospective purchasers with a much greater chance of obtaining the highest price the market is willing to pay. What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Find a REALTOR® who understands, and keeps up with, current real estate pricing, who you know you trust and ...you’re home free! What sets you apart? I prospect DAILY for two reasons: to keep up with current market values and direction and to find purchasers for my listings. Having done this as a top-producer for over 30 years also gives me an edge. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? More and more, technology has improved the speed, accuracy and ease of buying and selling property here. And the tremendous growth of the area augurs extremely well for investing in Huntsville real estate. What do you love about this area? EVERYTHING! From clean air, the high standard of living, safety and security, medical resources, access to every kind of entertainment and sport, to the brightest outlook for the future of any city I know. What do you love about being a real estate agent? Helping my clients build wealth by investing in Huntsville real estate. Would you like to share a client review? “Bob Gifford and Team are truly professionals of the highest integrity, whose goal is to build long-lasting relationships with very satisfied clients. The Bob Gifford Team listens to their clients, is very pro-active regarding scheduling of required tasks, they recommend the best people for closing/mortgage/appraisals, and they always follow-up at the end of each task to assure timeliness and satisfaction. The Bob Gifford Team knows real estate, understands client relationships, and leads a practice that can best be summarized by saying, ‘We do what we promise and you can count on that!’” - Joe Z.

Robert Simons Managing Broker/Team Leader, Keller Williams Huntsville Robert Simons is a transplanted Texan, as are many Alabamians. He and his wife, Susan, moved to Huntsville in 1986 from Tyler, Texas. Robert holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in marketing with a minor in management. Sometimes negative things lead to positive outcomes. Robert was in the oil and gas industry when oil prices dropped below $10 a barrel. Susan’s master’s degree in applied mathematics with a minor in computer science brought them to Huntsville’s thriving defense industry. Robert attained his real estate license that same year and began practicing business brokerage and commercial real estate. In 1991, Robert moved into full-time residential sales. Since joining the Huntsville Area Association of REALTORS® (HAAR,) Robert has served as Chair of several Committees, Director of HAAR, State Director, MLS President, and President of HAAR. He was honored to receive the REALTOR® of the Year award in 2007. He is currently a Director of HAAR and Valley MLS. Robert joined Keller Williams Realty in its second year in Huntsville in 2005. A strong core group of investors saw the positive benefits of a learning-based company with a 100% compensation plan. KW has since grown to be the largest real estate company in the world and is #1 in units and volume in the U.S. From a solid group of 42 agents, KW Huntsville has grown to 240 associates today. Keller Williams Realty has become the leading real estate company in North Alabama with over 2,200 closed units and a 12.3% market share in Madison County (double the next leading company.) Robert and Susan have three children who have blessed them with seven grandchildren ages 3 months to 11 years. They are active members of Willowbrook Baptist Church.

What inspired you to get into this business? Real estate is a people business that has no ceiling for success. How have the internet and social media changed how you work? Is there a downside? The internet has allowed agents and their customers to have highly leveraged relationships for communicating and time management. Ironically, this very convenience, has made deeper communication more challenging. What would you tell someone who may think it’s possible to save money by selling/ buying on their own? I tell them that 91% of all sellers in the U.S. and 87% of all buyers use the services of a REALTOR® for a reason - his/her expertise and guidance is very valuable in the bottom line and in protecting interests. Whether buying or selling on your own, you will be less informed about the actual market value of the real estate you are buying or selling and hence there is a higher chance for either (or both) parties to make a grave mistake. What’s the most important piece of advice you were ever given about your business? “Don’t let small thinking cut your life down to size. Think Big, aim High and act Bold. And see just how big you can blow up your life.” -Gary Keller What’s the most important piece of advice you would give about your business? Talent is wonderful. A naturally-wired person for our business should do well, but time-on-task beats talent every time. Commitment to working hard and reaching mastery at the small things leads to huge success in the big things. What sets you apart? I pause before making a big decision and am pretty good at solving problems, brainstorming and technology. What real estate opportunities/changes have you seen in the Huntsville area over the last several years? Technology has absolutely changed the way our business runs. Agents that embrace these tools can deliver better results for their clients – faster. The speed of transactions is both the good and bad, just like a space launch, or a Patriot missile, a small problem can cause a major catastrophe. What do you love about this area? The weather, the smart people and an opportunistic environment for success. What do you love about being a real estate professional? I can have a positive effect on BIG things for both our associates and their clients. I love working with our talented, successful team at KW Huntsville – they are phenomenal people.

Lynn Burbach REALTOR®, Keller Williams Realty Lynn Burbach has been a real estate professional for 12 years at Keller Williams Realty. She has a reputation as an, “awesome agent and a dear friend for life,” according to many of her clients. It is obvious when talking to Lynn how much she enjoys providing personable, outstanding service to each of her clients. She is a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) which is the highest credential awarded to agents, and one of the most respected and relevant designations offered in real estate business management. She is also an Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR®.) She is most proud of her many Keller Williams Customer Service awards. Lynn is married to John Burbach and has two wonderful children that are her pride and joy. Before Lynn found her career in real estate, she was a special education teacher for 10 years in Huntsville, then a stay at home mom until her children started school. Both her children enjoy getting to know new families moving to town. Her son does all he can to help introduce kids to sports/biking and her daughter babysits for many clients. Who inspired you to get into this business? My mom, she was my rock in every way! She was the hardest working woman, loved beyond measure, always cheering me on! What sets you apart as an agent? I’m most comfortable letting my clients’ words describe what sets me apart. Hart from Low Gap Road stated, “I could not ask for a better experience with a realtor than we had with Lynn. Every interaction with her was a delight, and even the challenging parts of selling a home she made pleasant. Lynn’s number one priority was serving us, as her clients.” I pride myself on making clients for life. Tim on Sunburst Circle declared, “Lynn will be our real estate agent for every home we buy or sell until she retires, and thereafter we will use whomever she recommends. Lynn will also be the real estate agent for any of our friends, family, clients, and acquaintances that are willing to heed our recommendation. I never met Lynn until her work on these houses, and now she is a family friend. I could not be happier with Lynn and cannot think of a single way that her service could be improved.” Don on Ledges Drive explained, “Lynn did a fabulous job, provided us with sound guidance and set our expectations properly from the beginning. I’ve worked with many agents over the past 35 years and a dozen homes, and Lynn is perhaps the best agent we have ever worked with.” What do you love about being a real estate agent? The best part of my job is helping people find a home/community that their family will love for many years. I also enjoy working with my assistant, Lori Hartmann. She is a fabulous assistant! She keeps all the day-to-day paper work in order, makes sure every file is organized and closed on time. She is the backbone of my continued success in real estate.

Photos by Steve Babin For 40 years, CASA of Madison County has been helping its aging and homebound neighbors to remain independent, safe, and a part of the community as they age in place. CASA hosted the 8th annual fundraiser, A Night for CASA, on April 19, presented by Torch Technologies. That night guests were “Bringing Vintage Back to the Roaring 1920s” in the Grand Hall at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The evening was filled with good times, dancing to the sounds of the Huntsville’s In the Mood Swing Band, with fabulous food catered by Chef on Call. Dan McClain, of the Josie and Dan Morning Show on 102.1 WDRM, served as emcee and helped raise much-needed funds. DENNiSKEiM

Centerstage

Meet Dennis Keim. Local photographer with a storied past of floating with astronauts, meeting dignitaries and loving the city of Huntsville.

Written by Suzanne Conway Photos by Steve Babin Thanks to U.S. Space & Rocket Center, INTUITIVE® Planetarium

Walter Cronkite and Neil Armstrong. The major highlight of my career was being recognized by the Astronaut Corp and honored as a recipient of the coveted Silver Snoopy award, designed by the comic genius Charles Shultz specifically for the Astronauts to recognize aerospace employees.

EVENT: When did your interest in photography begin? DK: It began at an early age when I first used one of my parents’ cameras to take photographs (from the TV screen) of the Beatles appearing on Ed Sullivan in 1964.

EVENT: How did your career at NASA begin? DK: While attending USF, my photography professor asked if I might be interested in a Cooperative Educational program between NASA and the University. I would work for six months, then attend school for six months, until I earned my degree. Living in Tampa, I assumed the program would be at the Kennedy Space Center. I could finally live out my dream of being a surfer on the East coast! Then, I was informed that I would be working at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. I thought he was joking. But after getting over my disappointment, I headed to Huntsville. After graduation, I accepted a position here and spent the next 25 years as an Aerospace Photojournalist and Underwater photographer. I eventually became the Chief Photographer of the Visual Information Branch.

EVENT: Where do you find artistic inspiration? DK: Everywhere. An artist’s gift-or curse- is seeing the world quite differently than most. Looking through the lens and capturing what is in front of me is a God-given talent and an addiction that I am grateful for. EVENT: What are some of your personal favorite photographs that you have taken? DK: There are many. While at NASA I was able to be part of the historical documentation of our nation’s space program covering over 40 shuttle launches, diving with astronauts in the Neutral Buoyancy Simulator when training for space flight and capturing photos of visiting dignitaries as they toured the center. As I look back on that portion of my career the highlights are monumental but a few that stand out would be covering my first and last shuttle launches; documenting the historical first-time vertical mating of the Space Shuttle; and finally, meeting two of my super space heroes,

70

I retired from NASA in 2000 to pursue my artistic goals while fostering my own commercial business (www.dk-studio) concentrating on corporate, editorial, art and stock imagery. My career as a professional photographer has allowed me to meet many dynamic and interesting people over the years, many of whom I am now blessed to be able to call friends! Beyond the photographs, those friendships are truly one of the most valuable rewards. n

Jody Singer 72

Spotlight Jody Singer is the director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Appointed in September 2018, Singer manages one of NASA’s largest field installations, with nearly 6,000 civil service and contractor employees and an annual budget of approximately $2.8 billion. Singer and her husband, Chris, live in Huntsville. EVENT: It has to be exciting to be part of NASA during the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Are there any special celebrations planned at MSFC? JS: This is an exciting time for the agency and for Marshall Space Flight Center. We will reflect on the past but also are looking ahead to the first launch of the Space Launch System rocket, developed here at Marshall, that will make it possible to return to the Moon for a new era of lunar and deep space exploration. Our goal 50 years ago was to prove we could land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. Today we are actively working to return to the Moon to stay, in a sustainable way. Apollo captured the world’s attention and demonstrated the power of America’s vision and technology to inspire generations of great achievements, exploration, and scientific discovery. The Apollo 11 mission represents one of the greatest engineering and scientific achievements of humanity, and we are going to celebrate that this summer with events throughout the community.

Written by Nina E. Woody Photos by Steve Babin

EVENT: What do you tell younger woman and girls to encourage them to enter careers in science and technology? JS: I’ve spent more than 30 years at NASA, and the advice I often give is to learn to be confident and comfortable in your own skin, trust your team and seize your opportunities. As women, we tend to wait until we are “overqualified,” but I encourage them to push to take their chances. I also tell them the best thing you can do is find a mentor or sponsor — someone who can actively advocate on your behalf for career advancement. It can be an on-the-job mentor, the next-job mentor or you can be your own mentor. It’s never too early to be an advocate for someone else. But most importantly, I encourage them to take time for themselves and their family. EVENT: You are likely a very busy person. What do you like to do during your down time? JS: What helps me stay balanced is my family, friends and planting flowers. I always try to remind myself to be in the moment, enjoy life and live in a state of gratefulness. I am blessed to be surrounded by a wonderful and dedicated team at NASA and a supportive family. n

My personal favorite celebration we have planned is a Guinness World Record attempt at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to launch 5,000 model rockets simultaneously at the exact time of the Apollo 11 launch on July 16, 1969. EVENT: Where do you think NASA will be in 50 years? JS: For 60 years, American investment in NASA has brought return through advances in science, technology and medicine, and I think the next half-century will see the agency make technological advances at an even greater pace as we enter the next phase of human deep space exploration. Apollo helped spur the computer revolution and countless innovations we use every day. Returning to the Moon will only lead to even more civilization-changing developments. Some of the new technologies that we could develop at the Moon include propulsion systems that feature higher thrust and efficiency for traveling to the Moon and beyond, and advanced energy generation and storage technologies to power human outposts on the Moon. Ultimately the Moon is a testbed for Mars. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate new technologies that are necessary for crewed Mars missions. EVENT: What do you think about the Artemis mission, which is sending the first woman to the moon by 2024? JS: Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology, so I think the name personifies NASA’s path to the Moon as we return to the Lunar surface by 2024. As the first female center director at Marshall, I’m extremely excited to see the first woman walk on the Moon. Just as Apollo inspired a generation, NASA will continue to inspire with feats of science and exploration today. With our goal of sending humans to Mars, Artemis is the first step to begin this next era of exploration. EVENT: What do you believe is your biggest achievement during your storied career at NASA? JS: My greatest achievement was being selected as the 13th director of Marshall Space Flight Center and first female director. Hopefully, my selection will inspire others to have big dreams and reach for opportunities. It also reminds me that no one accomplishes anything by themselves. I had mentors, leaders and peers who have supported me in my journey so I intentionally pay it forward and prepare others be successful too.

Huntsville Happenings Written by Judy S. Ryals, Pres./CEO Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau

Welcome to the summer of 2019! The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the perfect place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch and moon landing and to look into the near future when we return to the moon and eventually to Mars. Be a part of setting a new world record rocket launch and enjoy some terrific music during the launch week and Summer Fest activities in July. Check out Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, and don’t miss the new state-of-the-art INTUITIVE® Planetarium. Go on a Thursday and stay for the weekly biergarten. The Huntsville Botanical Garden’s Propst Guest Center is hosting Making Alabama: A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit, a glimpse into the history of the yellowhammer state. This fascinating (and free) exhibit is here until July 31. While you’re at the garden, go inside to see the splendor of summer including the Purdy Butterfly House: the largest open-air butterfly house in the country and a hit for visitors of all ages. Alabama Constitution Hall Historic Park & Museum has completed a multi-milliondollar transformation and is ready to welcome the world as the site where 44 delegates from the then Alabama Territory met to draft the first constitution of the state of Alabama. Take time to immerse yourself in history with fun, and educational, stops at EarlyWorks Children’s Museum and the Historic Huntsville Depot. Head up to Burritt on the Mountain for their new and original discovery program, Burritt Backpack Explorers. It’s a fun-filled activity designed especially for children ages 4-12. Burritt is a great place to relax and feel the breezes which are much more prevalent on the mountain in the summer. Take in one of their City Lights & Stars concerts and remember Cocktails at the View is a great way to celebrate mid-week each Wednesday evening from 5-8 pm. Huntsville Restaurant Week is August 9-18. This is the perfect time to get out and sample the culinary offerings from a wide variety of local restaurants. Special fixed-price lunches and/or dinners will be offered by dozens of restaurants during these ten tasty days in August. Check out the participating restaurants at www.huntsville.org/ restaurantweek and start making your meal plans today. Invite your friends and family from near and far so they can see how our community is growing and how our quality of life just keeps getting better. There are new hotels and restaurants opening to accommodate Rocket City visitors, and our attractions, points of interest and events are truly second to none. Pourhouse Grand Opening Photos by Steve Babin

“The name for Pourhouse was, of course, inspired by Stovehouse itself,” explained Matt Mell, co-owner of Pourhouse. “We wanted a name that would encompass this truly unique concept – a place where people work, play, eat, relax and enjoy drinks. We ‘pour’ everything: wine, beer, bourbon, and more, hence the name Pourhouse.” n

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS

The creators of Church Street Wine Shoppe and Purveyor opened Pourhouse, an eclectic upscale bar, located at the Hub Food & Leisure Garden inside the Stovehouse Campus on May 24. “We like to think if Purveyor had a little sister this would be her place,” said Stephanie Kennedy-Mell, co-owner and creative force behind the new concept. “Pourhouse is a bohemian, laid back, upscale, and ‘comfortably swanky’ bar with unique touches not yet seen in Huntsville. Customers can grab a drink and enjoy the rooftop deck or sit on one of our comfortable outdoor patios, complete with fans; or heaters and fireplace, for cool nights.”
