Dr. Nick Prylinski My family moved to Huntsville when I was in grade school, and I am excited to be back in the city I love so much! I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. It was then off to Mobile where I completed both medical school and residency at the University of South Alabama. I did one year of general surgery before switching into Family Practice, which I feel gave me a very well rounded and unique medical training. While I feel comfortable evaluating any medical/surgical condition, my love is sports medicine. While at South Alabama, I spent a great deal of time working with our athletes and covering games on the sidelines. I enjoy helping folks with musculoskeletal issues and keeping people active. While in Mobile, I met and married my beautiful wife Stefanie, and I'm excited to show her what makes Huntsville so great! I look forward to serving our wonderful community.

A Letter from the Publisher

As I write my usual letter from the publisher, it is late October and the warm temperatures have only recently begun to taper off, allowing the seasonal temperatures to creep in. We’ve been in production of this Holiday issue for some time and it just hasn’t felt that way, at least weather-wise. It’s somewhat ironic doing holiday photo shoots when it is blazing hot outside. I now know how the southern hemisphere must feel celebrating the Christmas season during their summer weather.
This is an exciting issue for me personally as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary. With over 60 issues published to date, I am amazed. When we published the first issue the economy was in a meltdown. That alone can have many an entrepreneur shaking in their boots… and I’ve done plenty of shaking. I want to thank you, our readers, from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to have the best job in the world as publisher of EVENT Magazine. Many people have helped me along the way and some are still with me. Thank you to our advertisers foremost, our employees and vendors. I’d also like to thank my wife, Carolyn and our daughter, Lauren, who have put up with me over the last decade working on this company at all hours of the day as well as weekends and vacations.

Almost 700 attendees and swimmers joined Huntsville Hospital Foundation for the 12th annual Miracle Bash on August 4 at Huntsville Botanical Garden and Swim for Melissa August 5 at Hampton Cove Pool. The two-day event raised a record $185,000, benefiting the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund.
Proceeds enabled the Foundation to purchase 10 open cribs, five isolettes, a video-guided laryngoscope, Beads of Courage, and parking tokens for NICU parents. These investments in technology and services impact the more than 1,000 newborns who are admitted into Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children’s regional NICU annually, and their families.
The Miracle Bash was catered by Bubba’s Silver Spoon with flowers and décor arranged by Randy Roper. Guitarist Alan Little provided musical entertainment. Legacy Sponsors were LeeSar, Venturi, WHNT News 19 and Window World.

Leadership Involvement in the Huntsville Community
Chris Russell helped start the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville in 2009, serving as Board Chair for the first two years and continues to serve on the board. The Community Foundation now has more than $13MM in assets. In 2012, the Foundation named Chris the Professional Advisor of the Year. Chris has also been active in Leadership Huntsville, serving recently as the Chair for the Board of Directors and also previously as Chair for the National Leadership Conference hosted in Huntsville with participants from 32 states. In June 2015, he received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Association of Leadership Programs. Chris was a 2013 Honoree for the American Cancer Society’s Summer Lights Gala. He has also previously served as Chair of the Relay for Life. He was named the 2009 Community Volunteer of the Year for a six state area of the American Cancer Society’s Mid-South region. Chris has been a Rotary Club member for 15 years and is a current board member for the Community Foundation, HudsonAlpha Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs. He is also a participant on the HudsonAlpha Professional Advisors Council and Mayor Tommy Battle’s Advisory Council. Lisa Abbott will serve as President of the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club in 2018. In that role, she will travel to Toronto in the summer of 2018 for the International Rotary
Club Conference. She is also on the board of Distinguished Young Women as well as the Village of Promise board. In 2015, Lisa was a participant in the Dancing with the Stars event supporting HEALS. Lisa has also been active in American Cancer Society and Leadership Huntsville.

Harold Williams graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Following service as an officer in the United States Army, Williams obtained his designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). After joining Linscomb & Williams, he obtained the designation as CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner (CFP®) and the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) designation from the AICPA. The Belles & Beaus Ball (formerly Summer Lights Celebration) was hosted at the US Space & Rocket Center on August 19. Over 700 people joined the American Cancer Society of Huntsville/Madison County to celebrate 20 honorees, which were recognized for their dedication in the fight against cancer.
Top supporters included Dynetics, Damson, Alliance Cancer Care, Anne Cary Walker Trust Management, Dental Professionals on Whitesburg, Doradus Partners, Dr. and Mrs. Ray Fambrough, IronMountain Solutions, Jacobs, Redstone Federal Credit Union, The Cancer Center, and Torch Technologies. The Employee Community Fund of Alabama pledged $150,000 to support a local transportation program and a research grant.

Pammie Jimmar is the Small Business and Events Director at the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Jimmar is a native of Augusta, Ga. where she grew up loving ballet, tennis and golf. She is especially fond of golf because of her father, who hit the golf course whenever he had a spare moment. She is the mother of two sons and a boxer named Ali.
EVENT: What brought you to Huntsville? PJ: My husband brought me to Huntsville 23 years ago. He’d been the manager of a service center in Macon, Ga. and they were closing their doors. At that point, we’d been in Georgia for 28 years and he saw the center’s closing as the perfect opportunity to move back to his home state of Alabama. I’d really hoped he was kidding, but he wasn’t. And the rest, as they say, is history. Honestly, moving to Huntsville has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! The quality of life has been a blessing to our family.
Spotlight EVENT: What do you personally love about the greater Huntsville-Madison area? PJ: I love Huntsville/Madison County because of its diversity, the arts and the sense of community. There is always something fun and entertaining to do in the area. The city’s new master plan is to become a city that both attracts and retains young adults and they are doing a great job! I am so blessed to be able to call Huntsville my home.
EVENT: What local events and activities do you enjoy? PJ: Places that I love to hang out and spend the day are Big Spring Park, especially with all of the cool things always going on there. I also love the arts, so Lowe Mill is another place that I like to visit. And I’m always interested in simply spending the day with my family at the pool! n
EVENT: Tell us about your role at the Chamber. PJ: I am responsible for providing resources, services and professional development to our members in effort to help them grow their businesses and to help them prosper professionally. I am also responsible for organizing the Chamber’s largest annual events including the Best Places to Work Awards Luncheon, the Annual Chamber Membership Meeting, the Holiday Open House and the Chamber Golf Classic. Connecting members is what I love to do. We are able to do that in a myriad of ways, some of which include networking events like ‘Breakfast and Biz’ and ‘Business and Brews.’ For ‘Business and Brews,’ we celebrate our local breweries and the events held there help to establish connections among local business owners, and at ‘Breakfast and Biz’ we visit local companies who can showcase their products, food, etc. These companies have the chance to share opportunities and further promote one another.
Programs and resources are very important to small businesses, so we also offer several workshops and educational classes through collaboration with numerous entities. We have been so fortunate to have the UAH Small Business Development Center located in our building to service entrepreneurs and small business owners who are either starting a business or growing and expanding their existing businesses. The business advisors there offer coaching at no charge.
EVENT: Describe the goal and driving purpose of the Chamber of Commerce. What is your mission? PJ: The Chamber of Commerce is an organization of businesses seeking to further their collective interests, while advancing the community, region, state and nation. Our role in the community is to serve as a catalyst in the areas of economic development, government/public affairs, workforce/education and small business. The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to prepare, develop and promote our community for economic growth.
EVENT: Why do you love your job? PJ: I love that I am engaging with people in our community and serving the members of the Chamber everyday. I am definitely a people person and I have the perfect job because I interact with people on a daily basis; being able to help people is what I love the most. In addition, I love having the ability to work directly with small businesses because they fuel our economy; they have a very important role. They bring growth and innovation to the community, provide employment opportunities and they tend to attract talent who invent new products or implement new solutions for existing ideas. EVENT: What is one of the most rewarding/memorable experiences you have had working with the Chamber? PJ: The most rewarding/memorable experience of my career, thus far, was winning the 2017 Chamber of the Year Award. It was an absolute honor to be recognized by our peers as the best of the best. I am so fortunate to work with such an amazing team of individuals, including CEO/President, Chip Cherry, who has led the Chamber for almost six years.

Rosenwald School Replica Opens at Burritt on the Mountain

Burritt on the Mountain opened a four-room schoolhouse replica as part of their educational experience. They commemorated the event with a reception on August 24 for members and the community. The school plan is based on that of the Rosenwald program, a massive building initiative in the early twentieth century to address an urgent need to provide schools for African-American students in the rural South. Begun in 1912, Rosenwald schools were built through a partnership between Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish philanthropist and president of Sears, Roebuck & Co., and black educator Booker T. Washington, along with support from the local black and white communities.
During the school year, the building will be part of Burritt’s 4th grade experience with local school children spending a day of learning at the historic, Dorothy Davidson Rosenwald Schoolhouse. While not in use for students, the schoolhouse will be open to the community to view a Rosenwald exhibit and for hands-on classes and workshops. n

Fresh from the Garden, a farm-to-table experience is a fundraiser for Huntsville Botanical Garden. The 5th annual event took place on September 22 and featured Chef James Boyce, founder of Boyce Restaurant Concepts which includes Cotton Row Restaurant, Pane Vino, Commerce Kitchen, and Gallery and Garden.
The amazing outdoor experience featured fresh, local produce paired with amazing wine while over 200 guests dined under the stars in the Four Seasons Garden. The evening included live music, cocktails, strolling through the Garden followed by the family-style meal prepared by Boyce using the freshest seasonal finds.

The English proverb “Christmas comes but once a year” means that people should use the Christmas holidays as an opportunity to help their fellow man. It refers to the spirit of generosity and goodwill that characterizes the Christmas season. The beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Reiney in historic Twickenham did just that when they opened their doors for the 2016 Huntsville Symphony Guild Silver Tea. This organization is celebrating its 57th year and the tea is held annually to benefit the Youth Orchestra.

The staff at The Greenery adorned the home’s exterior with lush evergreen garlands and wreaths festooned with classic red ribbon. The talented elves at In Bloom Floral Design continued the traditional theme in the foyer with a fragrant mixed green garland, clusters of blooming poinsettias and a cherished nativity.

Decoration in the formal twin front parlors was focused on the carved marble mantels which were laden with evergreen boughs, ilex berry, white flowers and custom boxwood topiaries. The formal dining room took on a more neutral tone with champagne ribbon, white blooms and cream poinsettias. The generous bay window in the room was accented with small box wreaths hung by ribbon.
The family room was warm and inviting with a large ribbon-topped Christmas tree loaded with a collection of treasured ornaments, and glowing with hundreds of twinkling lights. Amazingly realistic faux greenery and berries adorned the mantle shelf and back staircase. Beautiful needlepoint stockings hung ready for Santa’s bounty. Collected Christmas decor mixed with everyday accessories filled surfaces with whimsy and holiday cheer.

The family kitchen was inviting with a large antique planter filled with an abundance of berry branches, greenery and a della robbia of fruit. The much-loved kitchen tree was bedecked with candy-themed ornaments, gumdrop ornaments and a collection of mini copper pots and pans.
Adding a layer of traditional, seasonal decoration in an already lovely historic home is truly the icing on the cake. To share it all to the betterment of our wonderful community is a generous gift and after all, that’s what Christmas is all about. n

The Little Green Store hosted the Sanctuary Artists Exhibit on September 7. The exhibition featured art inspired by the Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary. The Little Green Store shows the traveling exhibit every two years.

Symphony Ball Chair Names Advisors for 2017 Ball

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild’s long-standing tradition continued in 2017, as Symphony Ball Chairwoman, Patti Thornton, named her ball advisors for the year and hosted them at an end-of-summer social on Sunday, August 27. A select group of the community’s distinguished men in positions of civic leadership are chosen annually to provide business and financial advice to the ball chair and support the event. Thornton and her ball committee hosted the men and their wives at an advisors’ cocktail party at the home of Laura and Darren Malone. Cocktail food provided by Narvell Patton included an assortment of scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
The 54th annual Symphony Ball will be held on October 28th to benefit the community by supporting the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild established the Symphony Ball as a major fundraiser for the orchestra in 1964, and since the earliest balls, advisors have stepped up to the plate, figuratively and literally. n

The WEDC Foundation held its 16th annual Women Honoring Women fundraiser dinner and awards ceremony on September 21 in the North Hall of the Von Braun Center. The evening honored six women leaders from the community. Honorees spoke to a sold-out crowd of more than 775 guests about the importance of mentorship, before accepting awards acknowledging their achievements as leaders. The honorees shared personal and entertaining stories of their success. The 2017 Women Honoring Women Chair was Paula Cushman with Co-Chair Jenny Hite.

100+ Women Who Care of Madison County met at CynShea’s Church Street on August 15. The group meets quarterly and members present three local nonprofits by pitching their organization. The 100 members vote and select a nonprofit as the beneficiary, who then receives $100 from each member. The organization chosen for the August meeting was Not One More Alabama, whose purpose is to educate families about the hazards of heroin and other drug abuse. n

Inspiration is found where beauty dwells 6515 University Drive, NW | Huntsville, AL | 256.801.9168 I thought that I had discovered Lampe Berger on my first trip to Paris in 1989. In a small shop near the Louvre, I found these beautiful perfume bottle-styled lamps which diffused a lovely fragrance. I thought that was the entire story until a few years ago. It was then that I stumbled across Lampe Berger again in a boutique on the North Carolina coast. That is when I learned the amazing benefits of Lampe Berger.
From a small brochure, I read the story of Maurice Berger and how in 1898, he invented a system of diffusion by catalysis for which he filed a patent. This was his solution as a pharmaceutical expert to rid hospitals of sepsis. Soon after, his revolutionary technology would be introduced in the private sector where it would soon be sought by collectors.
During the 1930’s, Lampe Berger would be designed by the famous to create works of art. Cristal de Baccarat, Emile Gallery, Renee St. Louis, Laraque, Coco Channel and Picasso would all have their own Lampe Berger design.

Now, I had this knowledge and love of Lampe Berger that I wanted to share with everyone, but no real platform. After moving to Huntsville in early 2017, I discovered another jewel, The Hartlex Antique Gallery. It is 33,000 square feet of beautiful American, English and French antiques and collectibles. At the Hartlex, I knew that I had found a home for my Lampe Berger. So whether you are a collector, you are looking to eliminate odors, just want a beautiful scent or you want to sanitize the air for the upcoming cold and flu season, there is a Lampe Berger for you. n

Rotoract Club throws Prom Extravaganza

The Rotaract Prom Project celebrated its 7th annual event on September 8 at the Hotel Russel Erskine. The project serves to provide a prom-like event for intellectually challenged individuals in Madison County with entertainment, hair and makeup and all the excitement of an extravagant ball.
This year’s prom was the largest to date with more than 250 attendees, including clients of Ability Plus, Arc of Madison County and Madison Behavior Therapy. The club donated $1,000 to both Ability Plus and Arc of Madison County in support of their programs serving the differently-abled community in Madison County.

the Holidays
It’s holiday season in the South where the weather has finally started to cool, the leaves are changing from green to brilliant yellows, reds, and oranges, and the smells of fall surround us when we walk outside into the crisp, autumn air. With the changing of the seasons come some of our favorite holidays and we are excited to share some helpful tips for making the wine at your holiday party the talk of the town.
First and foremost, we suggest that if you plan to have a crowd, it’s always smart to hire a bartender for your event. This way, someone is always pouring responsibly and can make sure that no wine (and no one) gets wasted at your party.
One bottle of wine (750 ml) will garner 5 glasses of wine at 5 ounces of wine per glass. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to plan for how many bottles you will need for the amount of guests you’ll be hosting. For example, if you plan to host 100 guests, 100 guests divided by 5 pours per bottle tells us that you will need at least 20 bottles to accommodate your guests having one glass of wine each. Naturally not everyone will drink, but it’s always good to have too much instead of too little.
November brings with it feelings of gratitude and moments of pause to be thankful for friends and family. When planning a Thanksgiving get-together, we suggest trying Georges Duboeuf’s Beaujolais Nouveau. Beaujolais Nouveau is a universal red wine originating in Beaujolais, France, that only makes its appearance in November each year. Beaujolais Nouveau Day is November 16th this year and according to the Beaujolais Nouveau Day website, the wine is meant to be drunk young and before May of the following year. It is a cherry red colored vintage that’s best served chilled. The November season has boasted Beaujolais as an amazing Thanksgiving wine for almost a century and we agree that it is a must for this month!

Dog Days of Summer Provides Doggone Good Time

Therapy Partners, Inc. hosted its 12th annual Dog Days of Summer event on August 26 at the home of Susan and Tommy Siniard. TPI handlers and their pet partners greeted the 200 guests as they arrived.
The event featured live music by Kirk Jones and Jason Gallaspy, a silent and live auction, delicious food prepared by Reese Covington of Rock House Catering and a chance to meet some of the therapy animals. Flowers were arranged by Glenn’s of Huntsville. The DaVinci Dog paintings were on display during the evening. Created by local artists who donated their time and talent to the cause, the one-of-a-kind artworks were of local pet owners’ animal companions.
Paradise Pet Resort was the 2017 Dog Days of Summer Honorary Sponsor. Funds raised from Dog Days of Summer benefited Therapy Partners as they provide services to Huntsville and Madison County residents.

Curtis Benzle is a full-time studio artist originally from Ohio. His signature artworks are translucent, porcelain sculptural vessels and architectural lighting. They are represented in major museums and collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art/NYC, Smithsonian Museum of American Art and the White House Collection. Benzle is married to Huntsville native Wendy Wilson.
EVENT: What/who inspired you to be an artist? CB: Art has been a part of my life from birth. My maternal grandfather was a syndicated cartoonist for the Associated Press and my mother was a painter. In terms of inspiration, definitely my mother. Beyond painting, she taught me to truly see the world around me. She schooled me in learning the real meaning of quality; an evident hand of the maker, material integrity, design,

color and conceptual integrity---all the essentials found in good art. Following her inspiration, it was more a matter of finding my own voice.
EVENT: Favorite travel destination? CB: Wendy and I travel quite a bit. We met while on the Amazon River in Peru. I currently teach at La Meridiana International School of Ceramics in Tuscany, Italy so we are there once a year. The Italian quality of life is infectious and I suppose we have succumbed to the joy of being there more than anywhere else.
EVENT: Favorite Huntsville hangout? CB: I would have to say my favorite hangout in Huntsville is our own backyard. After the entire space behind the house was unexpectedly cleared of all living plants by an over enthusiastic tree crew, we have

rebuilt the yard to be everything we enjoy. We now have two koi ponds to provide ambient sound, a wood-fired pizza oven for fun and food, and flowers everywhere. The addition of friends and family makes it our perfect retreat. Still, living downtown does provide us plentiful options when we do venture out. Cotton Row and Commerce Kitchen are regular go-to's and 1892 Restaurant, Panevino and the Lumberyard are always great.
EVENT: What music is on your playlist? CB: I have the Sirius radio Symphony channel on constantly at the studio and my car radio rarely deviates from WLRH. If you can count the Huntsville Symphony as a playlist I would add them as they are a true cultural treasure. n

Staff and hungry guests gathered at Rollin Lobstah’s grand opening event on September 23 to get a taste of “The Best Darn Lobstah Rolls this Side Da Ocean,” at 964 Airport Road.
More than 175 guests attended the grand opening, including the friends and family of owner Vonda Patterson, who got the idea for the business while visiting Martha’s Vineyard. After conducting an unofficial tasting of lobster rolls in and around that area, Patterson said, “Sitting on the beach enjoying that magnificent sweet lobster on that toasted buttery roll …I was thinking that I would probably not get to taste something this good again until my next trip.” And there, the idea of Rollin Lobstah was born. From food truck beginnings to a bricks and mortar location, Rollin Lobstah is a dream come true for Patterson, and indeed for its many fans. n

The Huntsville Library Foundation celebrated its 31st Annual Vive le Livre gala on September 27 at The Jackson Center. A sold-out crowd of over 500 guests were entertained by keynote speaker Amor Towles, award-winning author of “The Gentleman in Moscow” and “Rules of Civility.”
Linda Akenhead and Marcie Wingo chaired the event. A trio of Huntsville Symphony Orchestra musicians entertained guests entering the atrium.
Guests dined on a Russian-themed menu created by Executive Chef Daniel LaBoudiere consisting of Russian fall salad; salmon Wellington with Stoli cream sauce and grilled chicken with vodka Dijon sauce; Russian potatoes, sautéed asparagus; and Berries Smetana Romanoff and Torta Cokolada.
