Dine Around the World: A Nova Event took place on January 13 at the Huntsville Museum of Art to promote communities in Huntsville and to help young professionals connect in a social and fun environment.

The Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association recognized the outstanding accomplishments of hospitality professionals in the Huntsville/Madison County community at the Holiday Inn Research Park on January 24, which marked the 20th Annual Pineapple Awards Dinner.

The association awards scholarships to those working in the hospitality field for one of their member properties. In 2016, the board voted to allow children of member properties to apply for the coveted scholarships, as well as voting to expand the program to include a one year scholarship to the Southeast Tourism Society’s Marketing College. Libby Webb, President of the Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association, said, “Tourism brings in nearly 3 million visitors to our community yearly, employs over 14,000 individuals and pumps over $1 billion into the local economy. It’s an honor to lead an association that means so much to our entire community.” n

What led you to become a wedding planner? Always a love for weddings. A dear friend asked me to help with her daughter’s wedding. The outdoor wedding quickly became an indoor wedding because of weather, [so] the florist/designer and I made changes to make the wedding day happen. As we were breaking down the wedding, the local floral designers encouraged me to do this. Their encouragement led me to wedding planning these last seven years! What is the first question a bride asks? Where do we begin?

What’s the hottest trend in weddings for 2017? Color! There is always a new wedding color, this year Pantone’s color of the year, Greenery has made its debut: a zesty yellow-green, with more elegant florals.

Trends influence southern brides, but so many stay with traditional styles with just a bit of a trendy flair.

What’s your “never do this” advice for brides? [Never] try to take care of everything yourself! It’s difficult to pull off and makes for a not-so-enjoyable wedding day... What’s your “always do this” advice? Use wedding vendors! Wedding photographers, wedding videographers, wedding florists, wedding caterers, wedding bakers – just because someone is a professional does not mean they have the expertise to do a wedding.

Take the advice of professional designers and planners, look to pinterest, a friend’s wedding or remember your childhood dream wedding, but make it yours. Trends are fun and can be a part of your look, but do not have to dominate the entire wedding.

Love that Lasts When we asked area couples to share stories of being married 10, 25 and 50 years, we were excited and admittedly overwhelmed by the response. People were proud to present their stories of being happily married for many years, or to tag friends, parents and other family members who they considered living, breathing love stories. These aren’t necessarily the swooning romances of fairy tale princesses, but accounts of abiding love that survives hardship, illness, loss and day-to-day minutiae, and quite literally stands the tests of time.

We had the difficult task of choosing three couples whose stories fit our proposal, so to speak –couples that are showing how to do the work, focus on the small things (that are really the big things,) and sustain marriage. If you’re getting married, take wisdom from them. If you’re already married, find inspiration. And for everyone, enjoy these sweet stories and then-and-now photos. Meet the Hostetters, the Daniels and the Oglesbys. We raise our glasses to you. Congratulations, and here’s to many more years of happiness!

Wayne and Elizabeth Hostetter celebrate 50 years of marriage this year. Wayne was a pastor and minister of education. In retirement, he makes furniture and accessories using driftwood gathered from the Tennessee River, and from forest wood gathered in Mentone, where the couple has a cabin.

Elizabeth retired from First Baptist Church, Huntsville, as Associate Minister of Music/Organist and now serves as interim organist. They are active members of First Baptist Huntsville, where Wayne co-teaches a Bible study, serves on the Missions Committee and Elizabeth serves as a deacon.

They chose Guntersville for their retirement home because of their love for the water and Wayne’s special love of boats.

How will you celebrate this year? We are taking a sailing trip of several Greek Islands and Ephesus, Turkey. Later, we have a family cruise of New England and Canada. For our anniversary, my sister, Brenda Cornett, is giving us a party at The Caroline House in Birmingham. We're celebrating this event all year!

What memories do you have of your wedding day? [On our wedding night] I reminded Wayne when he went in to get a room, to sign us in as Mr. and Mrs. so we “looked proper.” We have the receipt where he first began signing “Way” scratched through it and wrote “Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Hostetter.” The rate was $10 a night! How has your relationship changed/grown in the years since your wedding? Not only have we been married 50 years, but we had our first date when I was just 14! We were always committed to doing what was best for our relationship, both as a couple and as individuals.

Tell about your family. We have two adult daughters, both married, and one granddaughter. Karen and her husband Michael Kilpatrick live in Huntsville. Lydia and her husband Jason Watkins live in Brunswick, Georgia. Our first child, a son, died when only three days old. That definitely matured us in a way that had a positive influence on both our relationship and how we relate to others. 1967

What advice would you give to couples considering marriage? We believe that marriage is something to enter with a lifelong commitment, knowing there will be problems, which you determine in advance you will work through. For us, it has been very important that we have a Christian marriage. Being able to talk to each other about faith, or at times - lack of, is important.

My uncle, a minister, performed our wedding ceremony. One sentence, which Wayne often used in ceremonies he later conducted, was: “In the beginning God intended it to be a beautiful and enduring relationship. What it was then, it can be now if the two of you have it in your hearts to beautify and sweeten it by your tender considerations of one another, your mindfulness in the little things, your patience and sacrifice of self, to each other.” How true this has proven to be!

HOSTETTER 50 Years

Larry and Stephanie Daniel celebrate 25 years of marriage this year.

Stephanie is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Larry was born and raised in Huntsville. They have two teenage boys. Together they enjoy going to a movie or dinner, which they try to do a least once during the month. Stephanie gives Larry credit for being diligent about setting up those dates.

Tell the story of how you met. We met right before we both graduated from the University of Oklahoma. I sat down next to him in class and when he said “Yes ma’am,” to the professor I knew I had to have a date with him. When he did [ask me out,] I came home from our first date, shut the door and told my roommate that was the one I was going to marry.

Do you have a memorable proposal story? Ever the romantic, he took me to a little Italian restaurant in Brookside in Tulsa and had the waiter bring my dessert with my ring sitting the middle of the plate, came around and got down on his knee and proposed. The whole restaurant was cheering.

What wonderful things do you remember about your wedding? I just remember that we had all of our loved ones there. Larry had family and friends from Alabama there.

How has your relationship changed/grown/evolved in the years since your wedding? I would say that we have evolved. We have always been crazy about each other. But we have also learned a respect for each other. We have raised two wonderful young men. We have been through his parents’ deaths, my cancer, and other challenges that can test a marriage. Through it all, we both know we would never want to do it without each other. Tell about your family. Laughter is a huge part of our family. I am outnumbered, so you can imagine the things that living with three boys brings! My boys are getting to watch how a man should treat his wife. That is priceless. This is the good stuff.

We have always traveled together as a family. I think we truly love just being together. I have prayed that whoever God puts in my boys’ lives that they will love the fact that we are so close and that they will want to be a part of it. At the end of the day, we have each other. We have a place we can all come home to that is safe, and full of love. That is a testament to our parents, and the people they raised and a testament to our marriage of 25 years.

What advice would you give to couples considering marriage? Keep laughing. Even in the hard times. Make sure you “like” each other. One day your kids are going to be gone and you will be sitting across the den from each other wondering what to do. Keep dating.

Matt and Sarah Oglesby celebrated 10 years of marriage in 2016.

Matt grew up in Hoover and works for HealthTrust as a Supply Chain Services Director. Sarah is a Huntsville native who works for the Huntsville Committee of 100 as the Finance and Events Manager.

Tell the story of how you met. We met at UAB. One of my roommates, Sabrina had met Matt over the summer in an AOL instant message chat room (pre-Facebook,) formed an online friendship and decided to meet up. [While that relationship didn’t bloom,] Matt learned Sabrina had other roommates moving in. Lo and behold, the woman of his dreams arrived in her little blue Saturn and didn’t know her way around. Matt gave great directions and even chauffeured me places. On September 18, 2003 we became an official couple in the Waffle House in Pelham, Alabama.

Do you have a memorable proposal story? On November 2005 I arrived at my apartment and found Matt by the Christmas tree with a poem he wrote asking me to marry him. I then had to find the ring hidden on the tree. Because of his awesome poem skills, every anniversary he writes another poem to recap our year and add to the collection.

What wonderful things do you remember about your wedding? What went comically wrong? I remember the wonderful friends and family who joined us that day to celebrate our commitment. We had rain, fog, heat and cold all crammed in to one day.

The funniest/scariest part of the day was when the preacher called Matt and said he was stuck near Cullman due to an accident where a truck load of tomatoes had spilled all over the road. He was able to arrive five minutes before the ceremony.

How has your relationship grown in the years since your wedding? In our ten years of marriage, we have moved 13 times over three states, flipped two houses while pregnant with each of our children. Moving teaches you a lot about your marriage and each other. 2006 The common factor that held us together is Photo by our love for each other and God. Tell about your family. Matt and I have two precious girls who are the light of our lives. Anna Katherine is 3 and Caroline Ryan is 1. Silent nights do not exist in our house. The days are long but the years are short. We look forward to seeing what God has planned for us next.

Written by Candice Fawcett Photo by Steve Babin Huntsville philanthropist and retired dentist Dr. Frank Crim works alongside the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the Dr. Frank Crim Compassion Fund for Children with Cancer to help provide for the needs of children and their families affected by cancer. EVENT: What is your profession? What inspired you to choose this profession?

Dr. Frank Crim: I retired from the practice of General Dentistry in 2012 after 44 years. My local dentist encouraged me to pursue the profession due to my interest in the health care field.

EVENT: Tell about yourself. What are your favorite activities, hobbies and involvements with local events?

Dr. Frank Crim: My favorite activities include the times I spend with my three grandchildren. These events include school programs, softball games, baseball games and so on. My most favorite activities are “doing nothing times” — times with nothing special planned; just whatever comes up. I play golf and on occasion fill in for dentists who go on vacation or have an illness. Equine therapy is another passion for me. This therapy is provided for children with disabilities. Research has confirmed that contact with a horse, as well as the movement of the horse when riding, provides therapy to help improve some limitations. I also enjoy horses and trips out west. EVENT: What is the Dr. Frank Crim Compassion Fund for Children with Cancer? What services, activities or gifts does the fund provide children with cancer?

Dr. Frank Crim: Our Compassion Fund was established through the Huntsville Hospital Foundation to help the families of children with cancer and blood disorders. Even though the patients’ treatments are provided by our local affiliate clinic of St. Jude, the life-changing diagnosis brings on severe emotional, psychological and financial stresses to the entire family. Our purpose is to help reduce these as much as we can. After the original diagnosis, we provide a Care Bag before their trip to Memphis to begin treatment. The Bag contains items for the child’s entertainment and warmth during treatment. It also contains gift cards for gas, restaurants and personal items. After returning from Memphis, we provide tutoring for the patient and siblings, wigs for girls who lose their hair due to chemo and family trips out of

town to try to bring some joy during a long-term illness. Other assistance is provided for physical and music therapy. Also, college scholarships are given to those who have completed treatments and whose family funds have been depleted. We help provide funds for utilities, rent, groceries and other daily needs. The children and their families enjoy the “No-Mo Chemo” parties after completion of the treatments as well as the Christmas parties. Also, “Sibling Night Out” is a time when the patient comes to the clinic for pizza and activities with the staff while parents get to spend time with the sibling. Regrettably, all treatment is not successful. Occasionally, additional help has been provided for funeral expenses and headstones. EVENT: What is one of the most rewarding/memorable experiences you have had working with children and families affected by cancer? Dr. Frank Crim: Our reward comes to us through the smiles of these children and the appreciation shown on the parents’ faces when they receive some of the services provided. We feel like we have provided a little relief and reduced stress for the families. EVENT: What do you like most about Huntsville?

Dr. Frank Crim: Huntsville is a great place to live and raise a family. It is a city with small town qualities and large city opportunities. Environmentally, we have the mountains, lakes and parks to enjoy. We have a good, progressive school system as well as colleges and universities to educate our children. We have strong leadership in city government with a progressive mayor who encourages industry and small business to locate here. Great efforts are being made to redevelop downtown with events, apartments and retail. We have one of the best hospital systems, which consistently ranks as one of the highest in the nation.

EVENT: How can locals in the Huntsville community help children and families affected by cancer?

Dr. Frank Crim: I think we can all be more aware of these families in our community and offer support. We can be available and compassionate. Donations are appreciated, and those who play golf can participate in our major fundraiser. This is a Father/ Grandfather and Child Tournament at The Ledges on the Monday after Father’s Day. Local businesses and corporations can become a sponsor; donations help us to continue to provide for the emotional, psychological and financial needs of these families during a severely stressful time.

Beer Lovers’ Paradise at VBC’s Von Brewski Photos by Steve Babin

The VBC held its inaugural Von Brewski Beer Festival on January 21, 2017 in the South Hall. The event served as an opportunity for craft beer lovers to sample brews from all over the country. The festival focused on seasonal winter flavors.

Around 1500 attendees came out to sample 140 different beers, with 50 breweries represented from as far away as California. Ticket purchase included a souvenir glass that doubled as a tasting glass for sampling. Guests were entertained by tunes from Huntsville locals 45 Surprise.

On December 15 the Hilton Garden Inn Space Center hosted a silent auction event benefitting Make-A-Wish Alabama. Decor reflected a winter wonderland theme, with tree branches creating an accent wall and snow covering the tables. Wine and hors d’oeuvres were served and a hot cocoa bar provided a taste of the holiday spirit. Local folk favorite Chapman James serenaded guests while they bid on over 25 auction items from popular Huntsville businesses like Salt + Paperie and Cindy Shaver Photography. The highest bid item of the evening was a signed record from Jason Isbell, Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter and Alabama native.

A Letter to Santa station was created to take advantage of Macy’s Believe Campaign, which donates $1 for every letter written to the man in red.

The importance of the work this organization is doing was felt around the room when Erin Keepers, a local Wish child, gave a speech about her experience as an HLHS Survivor and Make-A-Wish recipient. Relocation & Expansion

Rice stated, “Alabama Colon & Gastro has grown tremendously in the past year, and we recently relocated to our new state-of-the-art building due to the rapid growth of the practice.” There are exciting prospects taking shape and new projects in the works as the practice expands. For example, the AC&G Education Classroom is a developing concept which will foster patient education through guest speakers and lecturers for those who seek to learn more about digestive and liver diseases. “We are really excited about this concept because we hope to not only treat patients, but also to educate them on their path to a healthier lifestyle,” Rice said.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Rice stated, “March is an extremely important month for the Gastroenterology Community. Our goal is to help spread the word about screening. We always plan a huge campaign across different avenues in order to promote colon cancer screening and awareness!” This year, Alabama Colon & Gastro will continue the campaign, opening the AC&G Education Classroom to educate patients on the importance of colon cancer screening and awareness. n

At the University of Louisville, Dr. Rice served as Chief Gastroenterology Fellow for the Gastroenterology/ Hepatology Fellowship and completed his Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Rice is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology.

Dr. Rice’s expertise includes Colon Cancer Screening, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreotography (ERCP), Barrett's Ablation with BARRX and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. He practices at Crestwood Medical Center as well as Madison Surgery Center. Currently, Dr. Rice serves as Chair of Medicine at Crestwood Medical Center and Co-Director of Crestwood Medical Center Endoscopy Center. In addition, he serves on the Board of Censors of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, the Alabama Department of Public Health Board, the Board of Trustees for the Madison County Medical Society and is Vice President of the Alabama Gastroenterology Society.

Andrea Womble, P.A. After graduating from Auburn University with her undergraduate degree in 1998, Andrea Womble, attended the University of South Alabama to pursue her Master’s

in Health Science. In 2002, she completed the Alabama Physician Assistant program in Mobile, Alabama. In 2006, she relocated to Huntsville and has worked in the gastroenterology field, both in clinical and hospital settings, since. Andrea has most recently worked at Crestwood Medical Center where she cared for patients who required hospitalization. Andrea is board-certified and maintains her certification through the National Committee on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Lindsay Rice, C.E.O. Lindsay Rice graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Anthropology and History. She went on to receive a Master’s in Secondary Education from the University of South Alabama. After teaching high school for seven years in both Alabama and Kentucky, she relocated to Huntsville in 2009, becoming highly involved in the community. The 51st Anniversary of the Huntsville Symphony Guild Silver Tea was an event of December 8, 2016. The tea is a major fundraiser for the Huntsville Youth Orchestra.

The lovely home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Reiney in Twickenham was the site of this year's tea. The elegance of the home offered the perfect environment for the Huntsville Youth Orchestra to perform and friends to reconnect. Catering was provided by Sallie Ennis and Betty Lankford. The presentation of all the delectable treats was stylish and festive.

As guests arrived for the holiday event, Karen Higgins, 2016 Silver Tea Chairman, and her committee welcomed them to a very special afternoon of music, delicious tea foods, and warm hospitality. Members of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra Board, Deborah Brown and Jo Lee, as well as Guild President Ivy Albert and hostess Emily Reiney were also on hand. Young musicians from the Huntsville Youth Orchestra presented an array of music as guests mingled. n

The Huntsville Museum of Art presented the Voices of Our Times, a series that brings people of note in the arts, academia, publishing and politics to the Huntsville Museum of Art for candid, in-depth discussions and presentations. Their most recent event was on Saturday, January 21 in Loretta Spencer Hall, with guest speaker Leigh Gallagher. Gallagher is the assistant managing editor at Fortune Magazine.

Gallagher’s provocative book, “The End of the Suburbs: Where the American Dream is Moving,” started a nationwide conversation on the future of how and where we live. The celebrated journalist and business news correspondent also discussed the revitalization of our cities and the changing American Dream. The Huntsville Roundhouse was the setting for Angels for the Aging’s charity event on December 2, 2016. The Cocktail Gala Charity hosted around 250 guests, was catered by Bubba’s Silver Spoon with music by AR Harris Entertainment. Flowers and décor were arranged by Dr. Natalie Frazier.

Last October, Lyrique Music Productions brought Broadway musical sensations Jon Jon Briones and Janet Dacal to the Huntsville area for the fourth installment in their Broadway Stars Concert Series. Briones is known for leading as the engineer in the Miss Saigon Revival in London and will premiere the same role on Broadway this March while Janet Dacal starred in the Tony Award winning show, In the Heights (2008) and Alice in Wonderland (2011.) The two talents were able to share their craft with LMP's aspiring local students, both in a master class and a live concert. n

Remote banking for businesses

Remote deposit allows businesses the ability to make check deposits from their desktop without having to

physically deliver the check to the bank. The remote deposit is a service that allows a user to scan checks and transmit the scanned images and/or ACH-data to a bank for posting and clearing.

Smart safes allow cash intensive businesses, such as restaurants and churches, a cost-effective way of depositing money into their accounts. The safes are primarily used to assist retailers with end-of-the-day deposits. The machines – which look like large ATMs with touch screens on top – count and sort cash. They automatically credit the money to the customers’ accounts, although the deposits have to be verified at a later time. “If I didn’t work at a bank, I would have no need to go to a physical branch location. I pay all of my bills electronically, use mobile deposit, receive direct deposit, use the mobile banking app to transfer money to my kids, etc.,” says Frazier.
