Women marching to success VER the past 40 years, Spain has undergone tremendous transformations. The country progressed with speed from living under fascist rule to upholding the rule of law and valuing equality for all. One of Spain’s major success stories is how the role of women in society has advanced.Today, women hold numerous important public positions and play pivotal roles across the nation. Indeed, many of these achievements were celebrated earlier this month on International Women’s Day when the nation celebrated women throughout history and the successful role they have played in the ongoing progression of Spanish society. After the death of Franco, the changes in everyday Spanish life for women were radical. Under the deeply conservative regime, a

married woman, for example, needed her husband’s permission to sign a work contract, open a bank account, own property and even travel away from home. As the country modernised at lightening speed, women entered the workforce, established businesses and took up political positions. In a short few decades, women had begun to make their presence felt in politics, the labour market and all other public and private spheres. Unlike the UK, Spain can’t yet boast of a female prime minister but women do hold powerful political positions across the country. Cristina Cifuentes is the regional president of Madrid, Manuela Carmena is the mayor of Madrid, Ada Colau is the mayor of Barcelona and, even closer to home, Susana Díaz is the president of the regional government of Andalucia. And it’s not just in politics where
women can celebrate their success. Women hold leading positions across all spheres of life: Irene Cano is the director general of Facebook for Spain and Portugal, Mariela Bickenbach is the HR director for Deutsche Bank Spain and Nuria Oliver is the scientific director at Telefonica R&D. It’s not all a success story, however. Today, women make up only a third of the Spanish cabinet and just under 40 per cent of all parliamentarians. And statistics show that, on average, women hold only 37 per cent of top-level positions and can earn up to 30 per cent less than their male counterparts. In fact, the marches on International Women’s Day weren’t just about celebrating achievements. The 120 demonstrations across the country saw hundreds of thousands of women - and men - take to the streets to voice their anger against sexual discrimination, do-

The protestors also declared a general 24-hour ‘feminist strike’, calling on five million workers to stage a walkout and for all women to abandon their usual duties for the day, including childcare, cooking and household chores. Even Penelope Cruz took up this call, as she stood in solidarity with other women by cancelling her public events and going on ‘domestic’ strike - leaving her partner Javier Bardem to look after their two children. The international dimension of the recent marches for International Women’s Day showed how women in Spain have gone from being voiceless within the home to having a voice on an international stage. Yes, women in Spain have much cause to celebrate, but there is also still much work to be done.

Great Spanish inventions EVERY country can lay claim to a number of great inventions and Spain is no exception, although some are more mundane than others. The first moon walk and astronauts floating around in space would not have been possible had it not been for Spaniard Emilio Herrera Linares, inventor of the first ever spacesuit in 1935. One small leap for man, one giant leap for Spain! Guitars come in all shapes, sizes and colours, but around nine centuries ago, there were just two variations being plucked across Medieval Spain. They were eventually lost to a new design, la vinhuela, the first guitar to use six strings, in the 15th century. Little changed again until the 19th century when Antonio Torres Jurado, a Sevillano, made alterations to give us the acoustic guitar of today. In 1949, Spanish teacher, writer and inventor Angela Ruiz Robles had the idea to lighten the weight of the books carried by her students. She came up with a device she named the Mechanical Encyclopaedia, which was the first electronic book and was awarded a patent for her invention. Someone had to come up with the idea of fortifying the sweet Spanish wine from Jerez de la Frontera and as sales
were reduced dramatically by the Napoleonic wars, much of the unsold sherry began to oxidise. Port which was becoming a firm favourite with the British, and was easily available, was created by the addition of brandy and by the time that the Bodegas in Jerez were free to export their wines again, they experimented with different blends and discovered that brandy not only strengthened their wine but also slowed down oxidation. The rest as they say is history. The traditional Spanish beret, or boina, is one of the oldest Spanish inventions as it was created by shepherds in the Basque Country.

Manolo Blahnik the heart and soul of shoes BORN in the Canary Islands to a Czech father who had a pharmaceutical empire and a Spanish mother whose family grew bananas, Manolo Blahnik loved fashion. His parents wanted him to become a diplomat but the flamboyant young man decided that he was more suited to design and went to Paris to study art. At the age of 26, he moved to London as a fashion buyer and then presented some of his own shoe designs to the editor of Vogue who liked his concepts and advised him to stick to designing shoes. This was to be his future and he was commissioned by the late Ossie Clarke to design runway shoes and then began supplying his creations to up market stores in London, before eventually finding an opening in the US through high-end department stores. Managing to build a very successful business
amongst the wealthy and trendy in the US, he became a household name when Carrie Bradshaw, style icon in the highly rated Sex and the City TV series, regularly promoted the fact that she loved his shoes and in one episode she was even mugged for her Manolo Blahniks! Settling in Bath where he keeps two properties housing examples of all of his shoes, the so called Salvador Dali of shoe design was made an honorary CBE in 2007. Now aged 75, this increasingly eccentric member of the high fashion world last year saw 200 of his favourite shoes, designed and produced over the last 45 years, on display at the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid. Andres Iniesta: Spain’s most successful sportsman? |by Chris Thornley | WHEN tasked with naming the greatest Spanish footballer of all-time there would be a host of sensational talents to choose from. However, one name stands out and it is perhaps fitting that he was the man who scored the winning goal to end Spain’s long wait for a World Cup triumph. Step forward, Andres Iniesta, perhaps the most gifted Spanish footballer to grace the game. A man who has won everything there is to win in football and whose passing and dribbling have been hallmarks of the all-conquering Spain and Barcelona sides he has been a part of. Now aged 33 and in what many would consider the twilight of his
career Iniesta’s influence is still as strong as ever. A veteran of 15 La Liga campaigns, 2017-18 will be his 16th, and six major tournaments with Spain, for who he has amassed 123 caps, Iniesta’s ability to unlock defences and produce match winning moments over the years has

Diego Velazquez was a member of King Philip IV’s royal court and was responsible for many celebrated portraits of the nobility. In addition to his por-
traits, Velazquez produced scenes depicting historical and cultural events, with his masterpiece being Las Meninas (The Ladies-in-Waiting). Often referred to as the last of the old masters and the first of the moderns, Francisco de Goya rose to prominence through his series of tapestry cartoons, before becoming a royal court painter. After an illness left him completely deaf, Goya’s work became progressively darker and he is known for portraying
haunting themes with a bold use of paint which inspired many. The mastery of Pablo Picasso spans across a range of artistic styles, and he not only became a master of expressionism and surrealism, but is also seen as the father of cubism. Until fairly recently, it was off limits to the public but in late 2011 an €80 million project saw 14,000m2 of shops, restaurants and bars open their doors along Quay One (Muelle Uno). Shortly afterwards, Quay Two (Muelle Dos) was developed, offering tourists and locals alike a sun-drenched waterfront promenade of gardens, playgrounds and water features. Since then, 11 docks have been opened up as shipping and cruise ship
terminals. This has established Malaga’s port as one of the most important in Spain and brings over 700,000 passengers into the city’s sunny streets every year. In fact, ongoing expansion and modernisation, coupled with year-on-year growth of 20.61 per cent, will place the port among one of the best in the Mediterranean basin. Yet, it doesn’t end here. In addition to a new passenger terminal, port museum and environmental education centre, plans are underway to build a new fivestar luxury hotel in the port. The project budget is in the region of €120 million.

Changing the skyline ALTHOUGH Antoni Gaudi tends to be the first name that springs to mind when the topic of Spanish architecture comes up, the country actually has a much bigger pool of talent that is deserving of recognition. One of the biggest names in the field in the modern day is Santiago Calatrava Valls, an architect, sculptor, structural engineer, and painter who is best known for designing the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Turning Torso tower in Malmo, Sweden, and his largest project, the City of Arts and Sciences project in Valencia, his hometown. Born in Benimamet - an old borough now officially part of Valencia City - in 1951, Calatrava studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris before enrolling in the Higher School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He was then awarded a doctorate in the department of architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, after which he immediately opened his own office. After several projects in Switzerland, he built his first bridge, the Bac de Roda Bridge in Barcelona, Spain, and his career really began

In the 20th century English poet, Laurie Lee set out on foot from his native Gloucestershire to explore Spain in 1934. Spanish cinematic success SPAIN has graced the silver screen of cinemas across the world of films from the beginning of film-making to the present day. One of the first successful directors from the silent era was avantgarde film-maker Luis Buñuel, who collaborated with painter Salvador Dali on Un Chien Andalou (An Andalucian Dog). It premiered in Paris in 1929 and went on to have a limited but successful run in cinemas. Spain’s movie making was disrupted during the 1930’s and for decades after due to the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Foreign film-makers were not deterred and from the 1950’s several blockbusters were made in Spain with the country’s landscape providing the backdrop. The American actor and
director Orson Welles was one of the first pioneers and had lived in Spain for many years previously. King of Kings, Lawrence of Arabia, and Spaghetti Westerns including The Good, The Bad and The Ugly were made on Spanish soil, with the latter shot in Tabernas in Almeria. Spain’s cinematic success and the involvement of film-makers from overseas has continued to the present. Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, a co-production with a Spanish firm, was the largest in the country’s film history.

Successful Spanish ideas THINKERS in Spain have made several contributions to the world of ideas, with discoveries spanning across all fields. Francisco de Vitoria, a holy man and thinker who lived in the 15th and 16th centuries, was the first to propose the concept of people having rights. He wrote about his ideas in Ius Gentium, Latin for The Rights of People. Other thinkers from what was known as the School of Salamanca expressed what we would now recognise as theories on International Law and Just War theory. The Spanish have also made significant contributions to medicine and biology. The wheelchair was invented for King Phillip II who suffered from gout which prevented him from walking. Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, who lived in Spain when the country was ruled by the Moors, is considered the father of modern surgery. He devised more

than 200 surgical instruments, many of which are still used today. Spanish mathematicians were also responsible for some of the earliest work with statistics and probability. Pedro Chacon, a mathematician, developed the Gregorian calendar after being summoned to Rome by Pope Gregory XIII. The Pope was the calendar’s namesake and it is still used today as the standard way of recording the days and months in the west.
