BRITISH violinist Geoffrey Silver joined the Collegium Musicum Costa del Sol orchestra for two Christmas concerts featuring Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons and Pablo de Sarasate’s dazzling Carmen Fantasia. Euro Weekly News spoke with Silver about his background and the performances. EWN: How did you come to perform on the Costa del Sol? Geoffrey Silver: “I used to come to Marbella on all my childhood summer holidays, so I have an affinity and love for the area. It’s like coming home in a way. Sunny memories and all!” EWN: What inspired you to play the violin? Silver: “My father played the violin and was a huge inspiration to me growing up. I’d
see him play at home and perform regularly throughout my childhood. My four-year-old brain thought it would be a cool thing to do - and here I am!” On practice, he admitted: “Not much, but nailing something finally brings a certain satisfaction! It’s that ‘aha’ moment that keeps you going.” With a busy family life as father to two teenage daughters, he managed only “a couple of hours if I have important things coming up.” Silver shared memorable experiences performing with Lang Lang and greats like Mstislav Rostropovich and Pinchas Zukerman. To connect with audiences, he said: “If I can convey a sense of love for the music I’m performing, then I’ve hopefully succeeded.”

MIJAS PUEBLO will host the 40th Certamen de Pastorales Villa de Mijas on Sunday December 21, starting at 11.30am in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. This much loved event, a highlight of the municipality’s Christmas programme, holds official status as a Provincial Festival of Unique Tourist Interest. Traditional Andalucian pastorales groups perform Spanish carols and coplas using rustic instruments such as zambombas and sonajas. Mijas is renowned as the cradle of these folk ensembles, offering one of the region’s most authentic Christmas expressions. Groups will parade through iconic
village spots, spreading cheer with songs before stage performances. Each will receive a commemorative gift for preserving the heritage. Over 400 participants are expected, joined by large crowds of locals and visitors, creating a vibrant celebration of Mijeña festive spirit. Local expat fundraiser Alan Boardman recommends the festival for those seeking genuine Spanish culture, highlighting groups from as far as Cordoba performing in the main square. CASINO MARBELLA has unveiled a striking new exhibition by Dutch contemporary painter Jacob van Doorn, drawing an international crowd of collectors, local dignitaries and media to its glamorous opening night. The show reveals a deeply personal turning point for the artist. Formerly a successful graphic designer in his native Netherlands, van Doorn abandoned advertising to focus entirely on painting. His bold signature style fuses vivid pop-art co-
lour with dynamic, emotive figuration. The new large-scale acrylic works burst with saturated reds, electric blues and lush greens. Human figures and everyday scenes are rendered with a liberating balance of realism and abstraction, encouraging viewers to feel the energy rather than simply observe it. This is van Doorn’s first major presentation since the recent death of his life partner. Rather than retreat, he has channelled grief into renewed creative force.
“Painting has become my emotional and vital engine,” he says, a way to process loss while celebrating life’s intensity through colour and gesture. The launch was heightened by a live soulful performance from Virginia, lead singer of Vintage Experience, perfectly matching the paintings’ vibrancy.
