ON the second Sunday of the year, as is tradition, thousands gathered for the Torregarcia Pilgrimage, honouring Almeria’s patron saint, the Virgin of the Sea. The day was a success, spiritually and logistically. The image of the Virgin of the Sea arrived at Torregarcia beach just before 10.00am At 12.30pm a Mass was presided over by the Bishop of Almeria, followed by the veneration of the Virgin. Religious and social bonds within the community were strengthened as friends and families enjoyed traditional foods, folklore music and hymns. Maria del Mar Vazquez, Mayor of Almeria, praised “the wonderful atmosphere of camaraderie and joy.”

Racers at the ready.
THE streets were alive with laughter and joy as Albox held the 19th ‘Maria Carmona Memorial’ San Silvestre race. Esther Gálvez Jiménez of the ‘Club Atletismo Sur Este’ and Fernando Casado Sobrino of the ‘Club Cuellar Stone’ were crowned champions, finishing their respective races in first place. They received handcrafted trophies, made
by the local pottery workshop, Luis ‘El Puntas’. This prize not only celebrated the winner’s impressive achievements, but highlighted local tradition and craftmanship.
