Isaac Albeniz was a renowned composer and piano maestro, whose folkbased music was so popular that it was often adapted to other musical instruments like guitar. A student of the prestigious music academies of Leipzig Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory, Albeniz’s piano compositions took him around the world, and the world loved him back. Andres Segovia is regarded as one of the greatest classical guitarists of all time, but taught himself to play after being inspired by a performance from Gabriel Ruiz de Almadovar. THINKERS in Spain have made several contributions to the world of ideas, with discoveries spanning across all fields. Francisco de Vitoria, a holy man and thinker who lived in the 15th and 16th centuries, was the first to propose the concept of people having rights. He wrote about his ideas in Ius Gentium, Latin for The Rights of People. Other thinkers from what was known as the School of Salamanca expressed what we would now recognise as theories on International Law and Just War theory. The Spanish have also made significant contributions to medicine and biology. The wheelchair was invented for King Phillip II who suffered from gout
which prevented him from walking. Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, who lived in Spain when the country was ruled by the Moors, is considered the father of modern surgery. He devised more than 200 surgical instruments, many of which are still used today. Spanish mathematicians were also responsible for s o m e of the e a r l i e s t w o rk with statistics and probability. Pedro Chacon, a mathematician, developed the Gregorian calendar after being summoned to Rome by Pope Gregory XIII. The Pope was the calendar’s namesake and it is still used today as the standard way of recording the days and months in the west.

VERY country can lay claim to great inventions - and Spain is no exception. Some we are about to mention may seem run of the mill but they all have one thing in common - they have been a great success. It is a little known fact that the first moon and space walks would not have been possible had it not been for Spaniard Emilio Herrera Linares. Yuri Gargarin may have been the first man in space in 1961, but the space suit was actually invented by Emilio 26 years earlier in 1935. Moving into the world of entertainment and Spanish music - particularly Flamenco - is inextricably tied to the sound of guitars.

So it is little surprise to learn that the world can thank Spain for the modern acoustic guitar. Around nine centuries ago there were two types of guitar being plucked across Medieval Spain. They were eventually lost to a new design, la vinhuela - the first guitar to use six strings, in the 15th century. Little changed again until the 19th century when Antonio Torres Jurado from Sevilla made alterations to give us the acoustic guitar of today. In 1949, Spanish teacher, writer and inventor Angela Ruiz Robles had the idea to lighten the weight of the books carried by her students. She came up with a device she named the Mechanical Encyclopaedia, which was the first electronic book and was awarded a patent for her invention. Aeronautic engineer Manuel Jalón Corominas whilst visiting the US in the 1950’s saw cleaners in an aircraft hangar wringing out a cloth through rollers which inspired him to create his version of the humble mop, making its head circular and adding a grill with which to squeeze out the ex-

For the man who has everything, an unknown inventor from the Basque Country created the first stapler for the French King Louis XV with each staple being engraved with the royal cipher. Chocolate was first cultivated in South America, where the indigenous people drank it bitter or sometimes flavoured with spices. When the Spanish conquistadors landed on the continent, they did not take to the original mix, instead opting to create their own version sweetened with sugar. For years they kept their prized chocolate a closely guarded secret, but fortunately for us they eventually chose to share it with the royal courts of Europe. Staying with sweet things, Enric Bernat invented the popular Chupa Chups lollipops in 1958 as he realised that young children in particular managed to make a sticky mess with sweets, so by placing the sweet on a stick a problem was resolved. The sweets were so popular that even Salvador Dali was persuaded to design a new logo for them which is still used today.

Emma was attracted to the idea of living in the country also by the culture which she says is overall family-orientated. “I had no strong ties in the UK at the time and felt that I was ready for the challenges of obtaining a new job, in a new country. I was also excited at the prospect of being successful in a new envi-
ronment,” Emma says. Emma was originally trained and worked in the financial services sector in the UK. In Spain she was first employed in a direct sales capacity selling funeral plans, and this gave her the confidence to start her own business, before eventually joining with Golden Leaves. Emma said she wasn’t arrogant enough to think she had the ideal business model when she launched her enterprise, but she does have words of advice for any woman considering starting a business of their own: “Be positive, be yourself, set

Interview - Magic Mirror - Fran A VERY entrepreneurial lady from The Hague, Françoise Elise de Graaff (better known to her friends as Fran) has taken her love of photography to new levels with the introduction of the Magic Mirror.
