Historic relations IT’S nice to get along with your neighbours! This is why the mayors of VelezMalaga and Alhama de Granada recently met to discuss improving communi cations between the two municipalities The mayor of VelezMala ga, Jesus Lupipanez, and his counterpart in Alhama de Granada, Jesus Ubina, held the meeting to discuss issues concerning both municipali ties and to emphasise the need to improve road com munications between the two towns. Currently, Velez

Malaga and Alhama de Granada are separated by almost an hour’s drive, a dis tance of 44 kilometres, via the A402. Despite the distance, the historical relationship be tween the two municipali ties has led to a continuous exchange. From the trade that exist ed decades ago to the more incipient tourism, the two heads of the Axarquia re gion and the interior of Granada on the border with the province have created permanent alliances.

value but also elements of ethnology, history, urban planning, and more. This forwardthinking approach en sures that Andalucia’s rich tapestry is captured in all its diversity. Of the 7,200 treasures catalogued, a remarkable 1,446 have been hand picked for restoration under the Junta de Andalucia’s programme. It’s a winwin situation, not only does this initiative preserve architec

tural heritage, but it also paves the way for the revival of structures that may have faded into disrepair. As we flip through this newfound inventory, we’re not just exploring buildings; we’re immersing ourselves in the pages of history, culture, and identity. The architectural heartbeat of Andalucia beats strong, thanks to these efforts to protect and celebrate our heritage.
