Alicante needs ‘baby boom’ ALICANTE is worrying about its future as it has been revealed that only two out of 10 of its inhabitants are under 19 years old. The province has placed third across Spain with the least numbers of young people. The fall in the birth rate has been put down to a combination of unemployment issues, low salaries, and many youngsters leaving the area to look for opportunities elsewhere in the country or abroad. However, there are more centenarians over the past decade with the numbers tripling over that period. At the same time, 5,000 new births have ‘disappeared’, which can only have consequences for future health provision and pension payments. According to reports, the Alicante Province would need a baby boom similar to the one from the 1970’s to reverse the current trend in the ageing population. Detailed figures show that in a population of 1.8 million, only 363,000 are under 19 years old, and are only behind Sevilla, Malaga and the neighbouring Murcia Province.

ORE than 800 people took to the streets of San Miguel de Salinas to demonstrate against the proposed gypsum mine for the area. It had been organised by the Neighborhood Coordinator of San Miguel de Salinas, with the support of the San Miguel Arcángel Neighbourhood Association, and the hundreds of locals took the chance to demand that the Valencian Community Government refuse a request for a company to carry out surveys on a 1,400 hectares plot of land. What took many of those on the march by surprise (and delight) was the appearance of all the local councillors - both governing and opposition who joined in to express their own objections to the plans. The company, Rio de Aguas SL,

erties would plummet and there would also be devastating effects on our natural heritage. A gypsum mine of this size would be catastrophic for the municipality.”

Trapped passengers freed FOUR people were left injured after a collision on the CV-941 between Mil Palmeras and San Miguel de Salinas. For reasons that are still being investigated, the car and a van were involved in a headon collision. Two of the three occupants of the car were trapped, and needed firefighters from Torrevieja to cut them free. They were then taken to Torrevieja Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the van and the other occupant of the car also suffered minor injuries and were taken to other nearby health centres.

URING the course of the recent summer, Torrevieja Hospital and other emergency clinics in the municipality attended to a total of 78,382 emergencies. Of these, 24,575 attended the accident and emergency department of the hospital during July, August and September. Because of the influx of tourism to the area during that period, the health authorities adapt and are prepared for the increase in the need for emergency treatment, without waiting times and the efficiency and quality of care being affected. In the A & E department, an average of 266 people were seen every day during the three months, and figures just released show the average waiting time was 45 minutes from entering the department to being seen by a member of the medical team. Director of Nursing, Pepa Soriano, said: “These figures have been

achieved thanks to adequate advanced planning to accede to the higher demand during the hottest months of the year. I would like to thank the commitment of the staff that have worked to full capacity dur-

ing that time.” A total of 120 different nationalities were treated, and while 54 per cent were Spanish, the remainder were mainly from the UK, Morocco, Ireland, Norway and France.

AIRPORT managers AENA have announced that they will be soundproofing another 20 homes near to the Alicante-Elche Airport. The investment will be €177,000, and takes the number of households that have benefited from such work across Spain to just over 3,000. The latest programme comes in addition to the other 40 properties in the local area that have recently seen similar work carried out on them, courtesy of AENA.

Anyone for ‘pink’ tennis? WITH October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a group of friends who regularly play padel tennis have joined forces to organise a charity tournament. Last year they raised €650, and they aim to beat that amount this year. The Mar de Cristal Padel Centre has kindly donated the use of the courts for free, and all those playing will be

dressed in pink. There are prizes for the best fancy dress, and decorated pink bra. Each of the 32 players will pay €10 to play, with prizes being awarded from the resident coach. LANS to turn the main N-338 road that passes the Alicante-Elche Airport into a dual carriageway have meant that there will be no direct access to adjoining car parking areas and a number of car rental companies. The major area of concern is that they won’t be able to reach the main roundabout - the only entrance point to the airport terminal - from their bases on either side of the current single-lane carriageway. They will only be left

with the option of using a service road in the direction of Torrellano and use the roundabout in front of the Aitana School. According to reports, this will lead to extra traffic using that access point and increase the risk of accidents. The widening of the N338 - essentially to take pressure off and to stop traffic building up on the A70 motorway - will also mean several of the parking or rental businesses having to close as part of their land will be needed for the works. Some are already looking for alternative locations. The N-338 is the only

access road to the Alicante-Elche Airport and links the A-70 with the equally busy N-332 coast road. Figures from 2015 showed that 26,000 vehicles used the road on a daily basis.

Ukrainian’s death investigated THREE people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the death of a Ukrainian citizen. The 54-year-old m a n ’s b o d y w a s found with a blow to the head under a b r i d g e w h e r e i t ’s well-known that people from Eastern European countries usually sleep. The trio detained after being questioned by police are also understood to come from Eastern Europe and also sleep in the same area. According to reports, a fight took place on Monday night and investigations continue as to whether the death resulted from an accident or otherwise. A post-mortem has been carried out to determine the exact c a u s e o f t h e m a n ’s death. The alarm was raised around 10am on Tuesday morning and police were greeted with the body under the bridge close to Calle Teulada in Alicante. A number of local residents have allegedly told investigators that they’re not surprised something like this has happened, as there are often a number of altercations between the group living in that particular area.

SLIP-UP: National Police were led to fraud gang after car park payment.

by Darren Parmenter NATIONAL POLICE throughout the Valencian Community have made a series of arrests in connection with an alleged internet scam. Twenty people have been detained - aged between 19 and 36 years old - believed to be behind a series of frauds that affected more than 170 victims. Fifteen of the gang already have police records. According to reports, the scams were carried out across Spain and it’s understood that more than €150,000 was taken from 171 bank accounts. The alleged crimes came to light when a number of people applied for a credit or

bank card, only to be refused because they were registered in a database of those who had defaulted on payments... when it wasn’t the case. During the investigation, it was discovered that one person had 57 separate bank accounts opened in their name, with one of the cards connected with an account being used to pay for parking in Valencia. It was this that led to the identification of one of the gang’s members. How did the group get all the details to open bank accounts? They set up fake online job offers which asked for people’s details. The gang were then able to request loans and purchase goods via the internet, many of which were arranged to be paid over 12 months.

THE new animal shelter at Santa Clara Tobarra has been opened and all the dogs have now settled into their new and improved surroundings. A great turn out of people went to witness the opening ceremony, and all of the dogs were well behaved and loved all the extra fuss, attention and love. PROHIBITED: Police have stopped people from swimming in the salt lakes.

San Luis / La Siesta Neighbourhood Watch IN recent months, there has been increased police activity to stop people from swimming in the area’s salt lakes. As a result, representatives from the Valencian Community Government and the La Mata lakes will be attending the next meeting of the San Luis/ La Siesta Neighbourhood and Residents Group. It is taking place on Monday, October 29 at the Casa Ventura starting at 4.30pm, and the meeting

will advise residents of the future plans for public access to the ‘pink’ lakes. During the meeting, questions will also be asked to the local Torrevieja Council as to why there have been no improvement plans agreed with the mayor at the June meeting. These include those for the La Siesta park, and the failure to improve traffic and vehicle signs, as well as no signs to warn of illegal dumping of rubbish.

Food parcels distributed THE second phase of the Food Aid Plan across the Murcia region will see 1.3 million kilos of food distributed to the most disadvantaged people. It is understood that more than 48,000 people will benefit from the scheme and will receive food via 200 different associations. They began to receive products from Monday, and include items such as rice, lentils, UHT milk, olive oil, tinned tuna, pasta, tinned tomatoes, cocoa and children’s breakfast cereals.

Murcia expands cycle routes INCORPORATED into 22 separate roads across the region, Murcia now has 247 kilometres of official cycle lanes. This is all part of an initiative of the Murcia Regional Government to increase road safety for an estimated 15,000 people who use a bicycle on a weekly basis.

10 years and 160 equines later…

PAIN’S only officially registered horse rescue foundation is this week celebrating its 10th anniversary. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has saved 160 horses, ponies and donkeys from situations of terrible cruelty and neglect. In 2001, Sue and Rod Weeding packed their bags and moved to sunny Spain. They were aiming to spend their retirement years indulging in their hobbies, taking time to do the things they enjoy the most - but things don’t always go according to plan. In October 2008, the couple met Luceiro, a two-year-old stallion found locked in a filthy, dark stable. His left eye was badly injured and rotting, and he hurled himself against the bars of the filthy stall as flies drove him crazy. Luciero was about to be sold for meat, but Rod and Sue couldn’t stand the idea and so raised money to buy the horse, before bringing him to their sunny Rojales finca on the Costa Blanca. That day, Sue and Rod unknowingly created a horse sanctuary.

and we have so many hats to wear. We don’t really have an awful lot of time for personal thoughts or desires any more. I t ’s c o m p l e t e l y c h a n g e d o u r lives. But we love all our rescues with a passion.” Sue and Rod are pioneers in animal rescue and welfare in

Spain. Equine abuse is common and authorities have no facilities to house seized large animals - meaning abused equines are often left with their owners. But after a decade of nonstop effort, police from across Spain now often work with the

couple to rescue and rehabilitate horses. This year, however, has been particularly rough for the centre. Already, Sue and Rod have rescued 17 horses, ponies and donkeys. Floods have caused havoc, alfalfa hay has been lost to bad weather, and multiple animals have fallen ill, requiring specialist medical care and resulting in large hospital bills. The centre currently owes about €15,000, but that won’t stop them. If an equine needs to be rescued, they will find a way to save it. As the sanctuary celebrates its 10th birthday, the Weedings are asking kind-hearted supporters to donate €10 to help secure the centre’s future, as part of their ‘€10 for 10 years’ campaign. Hybrid tax changes BACK in 2004, Dolores Council brought in a bylaw that gave owners of hybrid cars a 50 per cent discount on their annual car tax. However, a decision was taken at a recent council meeting to modify the rule that reduces the discount from the entire life of the car to the first four years. On the other hand, owners of fully electric cars, will now only have to pay 25 per cent of the tax (down from 50 per cent) and will last for the life of the car. According to reports, figures for 2017 show that of the 5,255 vehicles registered in Dolores, there are only 10 hybrid cars and two electric... numbers that are likely to increase for this year.

On their bikes x 50 FIFTY people took part in the annual Classic Bikes Encounter held in Almoradi. Dressed in typical and traditional farming clothes from across the decades, they rode around the streets on a variety of old bicycles distributing local produce from their baskets in the way their ancestors would have done in the past. Among those taking part with great enthusiasm was the mayor of Almoradi, Maria Gomez, who didn’t hesitate to get on her bike and join in.

Hunter rescued AN 80-year-old man was rescued by members of the fire service after falling into an open ditch in the municipality of Benferri. According to reports, the man had gone hunting on Saturday morning when he slipped and fell close to a wire fence, and as he landed lost consciousness. When the alarm was raised, even local Mayor Luis Vicente Mateo helped in the search efforts to find the man who was in an area that was difficult to access. Once rescued, he was taken by members of his family to the local medical centre for treatment.

In 2017, the charity donated in excess of €35,000 to good causes and they are on track to exceed this in 2018. AROUND 30 people turned out to support a major charity event last weekend. The BIG Charity Fashion Show took place at the Everybody’s Dance, Fitness, Hair and Beauty Centre in Campoamor on Saturday, and the enthusiastic visitors and

supporters saw eight models from the studio all strutting along the catwalk, and showing off some spectacular designs. The beneficiaries from the day were the Paul Cunningham Nurses, and a superb sum of €310 was raised.

New Standard bearer for the RNA S HIPMATE Bryan Dalton was voted in as the new Standard Bearer for the Royal Naval Association, Torrevieja Branch at their September meeting. His first official engagement with the Standard was for the Royal Air Forces Association Battle Britain service at La Siesta Church on September 15. He was completely unfazed by the torrential rain in Torrevieja that morning, as he kept calm and carried out his duties admirably.

Bryan, originally from Lincolnshire, joined the Royal Navy as a boy of 15 starting on HMS St Vincent in Gosport and served for 25 years before retiring from the Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. The Royal Naval Association, Torrevieja Branch is always ready to welcome new members regardless of whether or not they have served in the Royal Navy.

As well as their meetings which are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 3pm in Bar El Paraiso near Carrefour in Torrevieja, they have monthly lunches and various functions throughout the year. Police run for cancer AROUND a dozen or so members of the International Police Exchange Association left the local HQ in Santa Pola setting off to Santo Apostol in Galicia to raise awareness of cancer. The 1,000 kilometre run - that will be divided into one hour sessions - was planned to last for five days, and along the route will see more Local Police officers from other municipalities joining in. The initiative comes from Star Spain, the non-profit association that has been preparing this challenge for some months and has already raised â‚Ź2,100.

‘NEVER say there is nothing beautiful in the world anymore. There is always something to make you wonder in the shape of a tree, the trembling of a leaf.’ That quote, by German theologian, organist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, physician and Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, came to mind as I stood disconsolately watching mechanical diggers systematically destroy acres of a wooded area just 10 minutes from where I live. What attracted me to Via Parque - a conurbation about 30 minutes’ walk from Benidorm’s old town was the abundance of greenery, mainly pine trees, surrounding the tower blocks in the area. Whenever it rains, the trees release a powerful aroma, wonderful for giving one a sense of tranquillity and well-being. Walking our dogs beneath the pines after a shower is as much of a pleasure for the pooches and the scampering squirrels as it is for me. When I took occupation of a 31st floor apartment in Via Parque in

HEARTBREAKING: Trees make way for more homes. October 2010, the area into which the tree-destroying mechanical beasts moved last month had a narrow path leading from the main road down to Playa Poniente. I loved walking along it, hearing birdsong, seeing rabbits cavorting and spotting large Montpelier snakes. It was a haven for wildlife. A few years later, the path was widened, tarmac was laid down and street lights installed. But the

wooded area was barely affected until work began in earnest to destroy the forest to make way for around 1,200 new homes. It broke my heart to see something so beneficial to the environment and one’s health disappear so quickly. Numerous studies have shown that people who live in wooded areas are happier and less likely to suffer depression.

For example, a 2015 report on the Collective Evolution website referred to research which found that anti-depressants were prescribed less frequently in areas in London which have the most trees. To gain this information, researchers from Exeter University gathered data for anti-depressant prescriptions across London in 2009-2010 and then compared that data with the numbers of

street trees in the same area. They discovered that anti-depressant prescriptions were significantly lower in areas which had the highest concentrations of trees. The report then quoted a paragraph from www.natureand health.com which said that in Japan, people practise ‘forest bathing’ where they spend quiet time absorbing the wisdom of ancient forests, taking long walks among the trees to stimulate their immune system. ‘In Taoism, students are encouraged to meditate among trees, and it is believed that the trees will absorb negative energies, replacing them with healthy ones. Trees are seen as a source of emotional and physical healing.’ A similar study, conducted in Spain as part of a Cataluña Health Survey, revealed that green spaces were associated with better self-perceived general health and contentment. I fully understand that this development - one of the biggest ever undertaken in the resort - will give an enormous boost to Benidorm’s economy, but it’s my fervent hope that the developers will make provision for new green spaces to replace those which have been destroyed.

The award is given to those organisations that have reached a certain standard of excellence in the provision and replenishment of medicines to the municipality’s health centres and those across the Vega Baja.

Engineer honoured GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA has invested a total of €300,000 to expand the museum dedicated to the local engineer Francisco Mira I Botella. The project will remodel the house where Mira lived and who was responsible for the reforestation of the municipality’s iconic sand dunes. Without his engineering expertise, it is accepted that the sand would have engulfed the urban area around 150 years ago. The exhibition will be located in the centre of Guardamar del Segura.

ORREVIEJA U3A is back on stream this month with all of its 39 existing group activities now up and running for the new season. New Group activities that are starting up this month include Line Dancing, Recycled Ring Pull Craft and Easy Jive and Dance. If anyone fancies joining up and taking part in any of these, then check out the website for full details The Annual Groups Fair which was held at the end of September was a great success, well attended with many visitors actually arriving long before the start time. New people signing up to the U3A increased the number of members to 971 and

many of the sections saw interest in their activities, so much so that some of them are getting close to being full. Ten pin bowling, a favourite section of the members which is run monthly, was held in Torrevieja Ozone Bowl with 38 members turning up and taking over eight lanes of the bowling alley. This was followed by a visit to the local snack bars to round the night off. The social side of the association has various trips and outings planned for the coming year, including a cruise and stay over in Venice for those members who are a little more adventurous. Free hospital TV and internet

HE Department of Health is looking to make television free for patients and visitors in all hospitals in the Valencian Commun i t y. T h e c u r r e n t charge is €4 per day on average, and the service is managed by a p r i v a t e c o m p a n y. However, that contract is due to come to an end in February 2019.

service will be free of charge and the costs borne by the Ministry of Health. Ta k i n g i n t o a c c o u n t that the average stay in hospital is six days, that means a cost of €24 per patient. The aim is to make the patient’s stay more enjoyable and allow

them to keep in touch with the world outside without having to worry about the charges. According to reports, it would cost the Ministry of Health €1.2 million annually to cover the costs incurred by the 20 directly managed hospitals containing 7,400 beds.

Cake sales benefit the AECC

HE Weigh-In Club of El Chaparral recently held their seventh annual event in aid of AECC Torrevieja and again raised a considerable sum for them in its ongoing fight against cancer and its help for those suffering from it. Based at Restaurante Casa Mia, the ladies raised the sum of €1,430 by again selling homemade cakes and holding a very profitable raffle. Night of the moon AN annual event organised by NASA, the ‘Night of the Moon’ encourages stargazers across the world to get their telescopes out to check out the world’s first natural satel-

lite. Torrevieja is taking part, and starting at 8pm at the Eras de la Sal, two telescopes will be available free of charge to look directly at

the moon. There will also be a number of experts on hand to talk about the history of Earth’s close neighbour. Weather permitting; the evening will finish at 11pm.

Alicante bound AN accident on the A-7 motorway led to a fivekilometre long traffic jam just outside Fortuna in the Murcia region. The crash closed the right hand lane of the Alicante-bound motorway for some time until the area was declared safe.

Lottery luck strikes twice LOCAL gamblers were shocked and surprised when the same number was drawn for two different lotteries in the space of 24 hours. The number 73073 - sold in Elche and Dolores - resulted in many millions being won by a number of people as a result of the weekly National Lottery draw on Saturday. However, the day before, the winning ONCE lottery number was also 73073. According to reports, the chances of this happening is once every 35 years... and it’s not known if anyone had purchased one of each of the winning numbers to enjoy double their luck.

Collecting the lead AS part of a local project known as ‘Plumbum,’ a whole day was designated to cleaning the sea bed off the Cabo de Palos in Cartagena of lead. This follows on from a similar initiative last year during which more than half a ton of lead weights those used by fishermen - was ex-

tracted. More than 100 divers took p a r t i n l a s t y e a r ’s p r o j e c t , w i t h many coming from the local Naranjito de Cabo de Palos diving centre. Any items of lead collected are taken for treatment and recycling and could end up as part of a car battery or even x-ray plates.

Forty evacuated in Elche fire AROUND 40 people were evacuated from a building in Elche after a fire broke out in a third floor kitchen in Calle Jose Grau Niñoles. The blaze started around 7.30am on Sunday morning, and according to reports the property’s owners managed to get out of the house after closing the door to the room where it began. Three fire engines were sent to the scene and the flames were extinguished within minutes. The kitchen suffered extensive damage, as well as some of the external walls, but there were no reports of any injuries.

ORREVIEJA Hospital has broken its own record for the number of births in a single day since it opened. In a very busy day, 11 babies were born which is double the usual number. Of the 11 that were welcomed to the world, eight were boys and three were girls, and according to re-

ports all mothers and babies were doing well and receiving the best possible care and pampering from staff and family members alike. The hospital is leading the way in how it cares for women during every stage of their pregnancy and beyond. They hold a number of courses and workshops aimed at making the experience a happy and healthy one, as well as online advice thanks to the

In addition, the Torrevieja Hospital is one of the few in Spain that allows the fathers access to operating theatres during Caesarean births, so that regardless of how the new born enters the world, both parents can enjoy this unique moment together.

Copper attackers THREE people have been arrested in Alicante after allegedly attacking a security guard. The trio were in the process of trying to steal copper piping from a warehouse when they were surprised by the guard during the course of a routine search of the premises. The incident took place in September, and such were the seriousness of the injuries suffered by the man in the attack, he was taken by ambulance to the Alicante General Hospital. Despite bleeding profusely from a blow to the

head, he managed to not only raise the alarm by calling the police, but also to use all his remaining strength to restrain one of the attackers who was subsequently arrested. The other two men fled the building and escaped in a car as soon as the National Police arrived on the scene. A full investigation was launched and culminated in the arrest of all three behind the attack and the initial attempted robbery. According to reports, the men were well-known to the police with a string of similar crimes.

Help for EU job seekers A TOTAL of 59 people living in the Murcia region have received grants up to €1,200 to help them improve their job prospects. The money will enable them to attend interviews and other selection processes in another EU country. The subsidies are aimed at those who are currently unemployed who want to start work in a country other than Spain, provided they are part of the EURES network. Amounts of between €100 and €1,200 are available and can be used to cover the costs of the trip or subsidise any intensive language courses to prepare them for their chosen country of work.

Political agreement on 2019 budget

OVER a third of Britain’s workforce has less than a month’s salary in savings. That’s the worrying findings from a study carried out among 10,000 UK employees by Neyber. Therefore, many people in the UK are unable to cope with an unexpected income shock, such as divorce, bereavement, redundancy or illness. Heidi Allan, head of employee well-being at Neyber, said; “With so little money to fall back on, something as simple as a car repair could leave people struggling to cope. It is critical that people have some way of paying for smaller things like unexpected bills, as well as protection policies in place for bigger problems such as losing a job, otherwise small income shocks could lead to Britain’s workers spiralling into debt.” The study found that most Brits had experienced difficult situations in the past two years, from mental health issues, (18 per cent) divorce (14 per cent), serious accidents (8 per cent) and job loss (19 per cent). Despite this, many Brits have no plans to address their lack of savings. Almost a fifth are not setting aside any of their monthly earnings. Lower earners with

group saved the most, at £350 a month, while 45-54-year-olds saved the least, just £282 a month.The average pot for those who do save is £10,468.06. The most common

way to save was in a bank or building society - over half of the 10,000 people surveyed saved in this way - but just under a quarter of people had savings in a jar at home.

SPAIN’S Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, have come to an agreement about next year’s budget following hours of discussions. Without the support of the left-wing party, Sanchez would have little chance of getting his proposals through a parliament in which he only has 84 of 351 seats. If everything goes to plan and the votes are in, those living in Spain can expect a number of radical changes to be announced. These include the minimum wage rising to €900 per month for a 40-hour week, from the start of 2019. Podemos wanted this to be €1,000 and there are hopes this can be introduced in 2020. However, it is not known if these are gross or net payments. Tenants will also see benefits with the minimum rental contract rising from three to five years, with landlords unable to charge more than two months’ advance rent as a deposit. Both leaders have also come to a compromise regarding taxing the higher earners. Sanchez’s PSOE government wanted to increase income tax on those earning €140,000 or more per year, but Iglesias wanted the level set at €120,000. They have now agreed on the figure of €130,000 or more. For people earning €200,000 p a, they will likely see their tax bill increase by €1,100, a rise of 4 per cent.

Later, there would be opportunity to press the flesh with Spain’s kings and queens. Timing being everything, I also missed the chance to share our dining room with former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and Premier Mariano Rajoy. The often misused expression ‘a dining experience’ certainly applied to the occasion when, accompanied by my wife and son, I took a chance on Meson de Candido. Set beneath Segovia’s internationally acclaimed Roman aqueduct, one might have once watched from here the crowning of Queen Isabel. Here was an opportunity to test the brochure’s promise; ‘Anyone honouring our house with their presence, regardless of their nationality or social status, is worthy of the respect and of all kinds of

RESPECT: Staff treat each customer in the same way. courtesies of which Castilian hospitality is obliged.’ These are fine words so let’s test them, I thought. In this world there are two kinds of people. There are those who eat to live and those who live to eat. Because I belong to the former I cannot class myself as a

foodie, let alone a gourmet. Hesitant as I peruse a fine restaurant’s menu, I own up to my constant struggle to remember the difference between à la carte and table d’hôte. So with some trepidation, I sauntered into a restaurant upon

which walls and guest book is writ the eatery’s superlative history. One must not confuse such watering hole as a public art gallery. However, one could not help but be impressed by the framed photographs of previous diners whom my hosts considered to be more

important than me. Where I stepped had known the feet but hopefully not the hands of many heads of royal houses and heads of state. Through portals leading from one dining room to another had stooped and stepped emperors and politicians, ambassadors, writers, poets and artists of international standing. The Meson de Candido also has the edge on my cooking as the restaurant’s by-line, ‘Candido, the Greatest Innkeeper of Castille’ has been endorsed by the Spanish Royal House. Such restaurants and indeed lesser restaurants can be a daunting experience for other than the well-heeled and fraternity of gourmets. However, our experience was precisely that, afforded to the aforementioned pillars of wisdom. We three diners were treated in precisely the same way as were monarchs and prime ministers. Furthermore, the menu prices were as one might expect of most quality restaurants. The Meson de Candido is a reminder that service is not just a matter of taste, it is a mark of professionalism.

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ?

info@psicologainmarodriguez.com POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER or PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after going through a traumatic event or experience such as an accident, a natural disaster, an event of violence, sexual abuse or terrorism. Maybe the traumatic event did not occur to the patient directly but he / she was just a witness. It is important to say that it is normal to have disturbing memories after suffering a traumatic event but normally these feelings disappear after some time. However, if the feelings of anxiety or stress do not improve after months or even years, and they are affecting the patient’s daily life, we might be talking about a case of PTSD. What are the most frequent causes of PTSD? Harvard Medical School studies show that: • 33 per cent were caused by sexual violence events. • 30 per cent were caused by the loss

PTSD: Recognising some of the symptoms. of a loved one in an accident, after an illness or in a dramatic situation. • 14 per cent were caused by war, kidnapping, robbery or witness to murder. • 12 per cent were caused by child sexual abuse and bullying. • 11 per cent were caused after being involved in a car or other accident. What are the symptoms of PTSD? Symptoms can often appear during the first three months after the event, but in some

cases it may be six months or even several years before they manifest. When a patient suffers from PTSD, his / her reaction to the memories of the event are extremely intense, and can affect his or her mood, behaviour and daily life in general. The patient feels as if he / she were actually experiencing the event again. In order to avoid some of the symptoms, the patient often runs away from everything that is connected with the event and tries to

withdraw from normal life. Some of the symptoms that a PSTD patient can show are as follows: Intense fear of being exposed to anything that might have a link with the traumatic event. Intrusive memories about the event that the patient cannot control, including nightmares. Negative changes in his or her mood, state and way of thinking, associated to the traumatic event. Lack of concentration, a continuous alert status and sleeping problems. Professionals strongly recommend the following: Psychotherapy. There are many techniques that can be used but the exposure approach has shown excellent results over the years. Exposure techniques can help patients to confront their fears in a more therapeutic way. This approach is related to anxiety control techniques and relaxation. Medication. Professionals recommend the use of antidepressants for a period of six months to one year, but always combined with psychological treatment. If you suspect that you might be suffering from PTSD, do not hesitate to get professional help. It is a recognised mental health problem, with a positive prognosis.

It cannot be anything bad if she smiles and because she is looking up and smiling, it means that she has no fear at what she is looking at. Older children could be asked to draw what they see, but she is too young for this, so just monitor the situation. Something around you catches her attention and it could very well be your aura, or an Angel visiting. It also shows you the high perception that children have. ISTABELLA has become a regular fixture from now on for the Society and with the new holes in play; many members have really taken to the course. The threat of rain didn’t deter a strong turn-out of more than 50 players, and whilst it never materialised the skies overhead had players donning jackets and waiting for the downpour for a while. Scoring was, at it has been since the new holes opened at the course, very good, with little to choose between the category winners, as can be seen below, and the scores counted as the first round in the SMGS 2018/2019 Eclectic competition. In the lead after Round 1 is Colin Rust, with Norman Padmore second and Mike Jordan third. With four

The ‘oldies’ took on Lo Crispin in Algorfa, and after a goalless first quarter and also after conceding the opening goal, managed to claw their way back to victory. It was a hard fought game, with a few meaty challenges, but goalkeeper Mark and the defence were immense, holding the more experienced players of Lo Crispin at bay. Clive scored the winner early in the final quarter from a very narrow angle after a poor cleara n c e b y t h e i r g o a l k e e p e r. C h e r leys with two goals, and Doug were the other scorers. The Gran Alacant Walking Football Club now have a pretty reasonable pool of players for these games and when they can get the best of them together they will be a difficult team to beat. Gran Alacant XI that took part against Lo Crispin were Mark, Malcolm, Jim, Michael, Ian, Doug, Cherleys, Sergio, Jon, Johan and Clive. Las Ramblas Golf Society THE dreaded ‘Yellow Peril’ kickstarted our week and only two points separated the four competing teams. With the yellow ball scoring double (unless you lost it of course) together with the next best two scores the winners were Dave Pulling, Benedicte Kruse, Nigel Price and Rod Doel with 133 points. The day’s ‘senior moment’ surely went to Mike Mahony who managed to leave three clubs greenside whilst walking off to his buggy. On to the serious business of Wednesday’s club championship ‘Medal’ round. This was the second of three rounds with each player being judged on his/her best two score cards. El Plantio 2 Golf Society NOW that the summer is finished, more people are returning to Spain from the U.K., swelling El Plantio 2 Golf Society's membership who is taking advantage of ideal golfing temperatures. Twenty-one members gathered to compete in a Texas Scramble in seven teams of three players. Scoring a magnificent seven birdies, with only one bogie, to win by four clear shots were John Wilby, Barry Johnson and club captain Lawrence Wanty. 1st - John Wilby, Barry Johnson, and Lawrence Wanty on 42 shots off 6 handicap. 2nd - Ian Henderson, Peter Brammer, and Samantha Brammer on 46 shots off 6 handicap.

Direct object pronouns – Uses of ‘le’ and ‘les’ Basic Spanish for everyday needs

AT present we are looking at an area of Spanish language which is basic, but at the same time rather fiddly. It is one of those areas where we really do have to accept certain things without necessarily understanding them fully and one where it takes a while to build up the whole picture. So far we have explained in some detail exactly what a direct object pronoun is, what its equivalent is in English and how it is used in most cases in Spanish. Last week I skirted around a particular aspect, which is what happens to the direct object pronoun in the third person, and also what happens when the object is ‘usted’ or ‘ustedes’ (the formal ‘you’ which uses the same form as the third person). We have established that the usual direct object pronoun in the third person is ‘lo’ for masculine and ‘la’ for feminine, and this is technically true when referring to people, as well as for things. However, in many forms of spoken Spanish there is a tendency to replace ‘lo’ with ‘le’, particularly

when referring to people. (The word ‘le’ exists correctly as something else we’re not learning yet). Exactly the same phenomenon occurs in the third person plural, which sometimes substitutes ‘los’ for ‘les’ when referring to people rather than things. This can be very confusing when we learn that ‘lo’ is correct, and then we see that sometimes it changes to ‘le’ for no apparent reason. Even more confusing is when teachers and books insist that ‘lo’ is the only possibility but then you discover that the Spanish themselves use the two words interchangeably. Also believe me, if you ask your average Spanish person to explain why they’ve used the word ‘le’ instead of ‘lo’ in a particular sentence, they won’t be able to.

The simplest explanation is that although it is technically incorrect to use ‘le’ as a direct object pronoun, the use has become so common, particularly in certain parts of the country, that it is now generally regarded as acceptable. If you think that is horrible, just be aware that the same thing happens in English as well, and is all part of the evolution of languages. Certain things creep into speech which the purists jump up and down about because they are incorrect, but in the end they become so common that everyone accepts them and forgets they were wrong in the first place. (Just two examples; the ten-

dency nowadays to say ‘if I was you’ instead of ‘if I were you’ and ‘If I would have known’ instead of ‘if I had known’). You may think I’m making a lot of fuss about nothing, particularly if you didn’t know there was a problem in the first place, but as we move on and learn more of these little words, they can become a bit of a nightmare if you don’t realise these basic truths, so the best thing is to store the information in your mind for future recall. You can put it in a folder labelled ‘things Jane says will be important later on’. Here is a summary which therefore needs to be tacked onto the bottom of the list of direct object pronouns in last week’s article. ‘le’* ; him / you (m. usted) ‘les’; them (people) / you (m. ustedes) (*when the third person masculine refers to people, it is very common in European Spanish to use ‘'le/les’ instead of ‘lo/los’) This oddity only applies to the masculine form. The feminine remains ‘la’ and ‘las’ for people and things when they are direct objects. What we haven’t mentioned yet are ‘indirect object pronouns’ (of which ‘le’ and ‘les’ are examples) but don’t worry, we won’t do that for a while! Next week we will go back to real examples of Spanish sentences to put all this into place. Bet you can’t wait!

SEAT returns best ever results SEAT’S global sales up to September set a new record. Since January, the car maker delivered 415,600 cars worldwide, which is 17.1 per cent more than in the same period last year (354,900). This figure is the best result ever in the history of

SEAT, and is higher than the January to September posting in 2000 (394,400 cars sold). SEAT vice-president for Marketing and Sales Wayne Griffiths explained that “Sales up to September gave SEAT a new record and established us

Nevertheless, with three months still left before concluding 2018, we are on track to achieving the highest sales volume in the history of SEAT.” Deliveries of the Spanish carmaker went up from January to September as a result of the momentum in the major European markets, which all posted double-digit growth. Germany is SEAT’s leading market with 90,400 cars delivered (22.8 per cent) and achieved its best historic result. Spain follows closely behind with the second highest number sold (85,900 vehicles; 16.5 per cent) and tops the list of brands and registered vehicles with the Leon and Ibiza in first and second place.

Furthermore, with an increase of 14.1 per cent (50,500 units) the UK

rounds off the company’s top three markets and also broke its sales record.
