Carnivorous species discovered A NEW species of carnivorous plant has been discovered in Spain. The lilac-flowered insectivore has leaves covered in gummy glands which small insects get stuck to before being devoured. University of Alicante researchers made the discovery in Valencia’s Enguera and Moixent areas. The species is known biologically as the Pinguicula saetabensis. It is at risk of extinction requiring “urgent conservation methods from different administrations,” the university’s research group said. The new find grows in extremely fragile environments and is seen as an indicator of the ecosystems’ quality, scientists explained.

FOLLOWING the excitement of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the eyes of the world were focussed on Manchester and the first anniversary of the bombing. Thousands of young people and parents had turned up at the Manchester Arena on May 22, 2017 to enjoy the music of Ariana Grande but their joy turned to horror as one man, Salman Ramadan Abedi blew himself up, taking 22 people with him, wounding 139 and leaving hundreds more with psychological damage. Various political leaders as well as Prince William arrived in the city to attend a Remembrance Service in a packed Cathedral alongside many of those who had survived and relations of those who had been killed. In a show of solidarity, leaders from all of the major religions banded together to show their abhorrence for the ruthless

massacre and there was a general feeling of pride in the resilience of the people of Manchester tinged with sadness for those who were so brutally robbed of their lives. Ariana Grande who has clearly been affected by the events of the previous year and had bravely staged a charity concert in the city just a few weeks later tweeted ‘thinking of you all today and every day I love you with all of me and am sending

you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day.’ Many added their own personal messages to a ‘tree of hope’. There was a one-minute silence which was observed by many across the UK and there was a festival of music which included an appearance by the Manchester Survivors Choir made up of children and their parents who had been present at the bombing.

It is quite amazing how people can suffer the greatest of indignities when they are totally innocent, yet manage to bounce back and carry on with their lives to the best of their abilities. The loss of 22 innocent lives (plus the bomber) is a tragedy and quite rightly makes headline news but this is just a drop in the ocean when one considers the daily loss of life in wars and insurrections around the world. Syria and Yemen are still the

current hottest spots as different world powers become involved in fighting proxy wars and as is so often the case, thousands of people are sacrificed in order to advance the ideological wishes of a few leaders. Going back to the First World War, the generals sat back whilst the ‘proles’ died in their hundreds of thousands to win a small stretch of mud in Belgium or France (and this is not to take away from the magnificent men who fought the war). Unfortunately, whilst in the west, war is no longer so common (but let’s not forget Bosnia), everyone is now a potential target but life goes on. Here in Spain whilst we may get irritated by bureaucracy and a different pace of life, at least we can be happy that generally we are not on the ‘front line’ and the only real skirmishes are when the occasional visitor has too much to drink.

Con men tampered with cash machines

POLICE have brought down a band of criminals who manipulated cash machines to trap credit cards and steal thousands. The fraudsters used a method known as the ‘Lebanese trap’ in which they tampered with cash machine card slots to make people think their cards had been swallowed, police sources said. And the cards were then intercepted by the criminals

along with the pin numbers swindled by placing mobile phones in strategic positions. The con men would then go to another bank’s cash machine to empty the accounts. And the group’s operations were organised and spanned Alicante, Castellon, Murcia, Granada, Tarragona and Girona provinces. Officers from different units had to be deployed to keep tabs on the gang - said to

be of Romanian origin - because of their widespread coverage. The entire gang has now been tumbled after its leader and three other members were arrested on charges of criminal organisation, fraud and damages. Investigators have evidence of criminals using the ‘Lebanese trap’ at least 25 times to steal a value of €30,000.

NATIONAL POLICE: Were involved in a high speed chase.

High speed chase on A-7 ends in arrest A CZECH national who had stolen a car was spotted when he sped away from a check point on the A-7 near Elche. Officers of the National Police were carrying out routine checks of vehicles when they spotted the car being driven away from their position erratically and at high speed, almost running over one of the officers. A high speed chase ensued as the man shot off towards Murcia and officers were

worried that he was driving so badly that he could cause an accident and injure members of the general public. As more cars joined the chase, the man was eventually forced to stop due to traffic jams ahead and it was then that the officers took the opportunity to apprehend him. They soon realised that the 41-year-old had a multiple police record for vehicle theft and was wanted across Spain for various illegal activities.

The car he had stolen was returned to its owner and the man has been detained whilst awaiting a further trial.

Birds evicted from palm tree OFFICERS from the Alicante Fire Prevention and Service in the company of members of the Local Police responded to a call from residents in an urbanisation located near to the Lighthouse. It appeared that a pair of seagulls had set up a nest in a palm tree and were causing problems for residents as they were walking by and were exceptionally noisy. Accompanied by animal protection experts, the firemen climbed to the top of the tree and two young birds and a broken egg were removed and handed over to animal protection to be cared for.

RTN joins Royal Wedding celebrations by John Smith THE British Embassy in Spain joined in the celebration of the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle by hosting a party in the residence of the British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley. The EWN Media Group owners Michel and Steven Euesden had been invited but decided that it would be more appropriate for them to host a party for expatriate residents of the Costa del Sol, so long-serving staff writer John Smith who was also on the guest list and has recently become more involved with RTN newspaper travelled to Madrid to attend the British Embassy Royal Wedding party on the Group’s behalf. Accompanied by his wife Ophelia who is Gibraltarian and spent more than 30 years working in British media as well as being a former presenter on Gibraltar TV, they were delighted to be part of this patriotic gathering of British residents in Spain. Through the award of a diploma, the Ambassador acknowledged the

affair that had retained much from its glory days, and I was amazed to see faces in it that I’d ever only seen on the big screen - Kenneth William, Alec Guinness and Denholm Elliot, to name but a few, I was even more delighted to learn that the bar had gained worldwide fame when it was featured in the 1961 British suspense film Victim, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. It was the first English language film to use the word ‘homosexual’ - and it played a significant role in the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. It was in the Salisbury in 1975 that I met the first great love of my life, an ex-army signalman called Brian Parry. We instantly bonded, and remained happily together for 21 years. Cancer took him in 1996. He was just 47. With decades of gay history stretching back to Oscar Wilde’s time, one would have thought that The Salisbury would remain a haven for gay clientele forever, but in the mid-1980s a decision was made to turn it straight. In a move that left regulars hurt and bewildered, staff turned really nasty to-

ON the very first day I arrived in London from Johannesburg in South Africa back in 1973, I stood rattling the door of a bar called The Salisbury in St Martins Lane, wondering why, at 4pm, it was shut. Just then a handsome young copper came ambling up, and said “you must be a tourist, or else you would know that bars don’t open until 5.30.” Then he added with a sneer: “You shouldn’t go into that place unless you’re a bleedin’ poofter.” I replied that, although I wasn’t actually in search of a gay bar, it was good to know that I’d inadvertently found one. “So, thanks for your help, officer, and if you care to join me here later I’ll gladly buy you a drink.” He blushed all the way up to his helmet (pardon the expression) and hissed “I can have you for propositioning me, sunshine, but I’ll let you off with a warning this time.” And off he strode in a huff. When the bar eventually opened I immediately vowed to adopt it as my local. Built around 1899, it was a sumptuously-appointed Victorian

rid a bar of unwanted clients, it’s a damn side harder to kill its reputation. Heterosexuals, believing it was still a gay bar, gave it a wide berth and, for about two years, it remained virtually empty.

I was reminded of The Salisbury by an article that appeared recently in RTN which suggested that Benidorm’s Old Town, a long-time Mecca for LGBT tourists, was in danger of losing its gay identity as a result of an influx of straight stag and hen parties. A guy who read the piece said he thought that local gay bar owners should actively discourage such groups. “Gay bars should be for gay people only,” he grumped. “Nope,” I replied. “All my life I’ve campaigned for equality, and that extends way beyond LGBT issues.” I then pointed out that some of the best nights I’ve had in the Old Town have been in the company of men and women of all ages gay and straight - who have come to spend their money in establishments that fly the rainbow flag precisely because they enjoy the campness, camaraderie and the sheer gaiety that many other bars and clubs lack. Wherever inclusivity trumps suspicion, hatred and fear the result is bound to be gatherings of people who no longer feel the need to cocoon themselves among their own kind. The days when there was a real need for exclusively gay venues like The Salisbury have long passed and I, for one, am glad that they have been replaced by a new order that allows people to be themselves in whatever bar or club they choose to patronise.

Record hotel occupancy THE average hotel occupancy in Alicante for the month of April was a whopping 80 per cent, and was the largest recorded total since 2005. According to the City Council, much of this success was thanks to the number of congresses held during the month with a huge influx of visitors. As an added bonus, some 400 young people will be employed at a cost of â‚Ź6.7 million thanks to additional assistance from the European Social Fund of the National Youth Guarantee System.

Getting ready for the tuna season ALICANTE PORT has been particularly busy as fishing boats from all over Spain and part of France have been sailing in to get ready for the start of the bluefin tuna season. Having been fishing en route, the vessels unloaded several hundred kilos of anchovy and sardine for sale in the old Alicante fish market which has seen a rebir th since 2017 and now trades in some high valued fish including swordfish and tuna.

It has been reported by the Port of Alicante that in the first quar ter of this year more than 325 tons of fresh fish have been unloaded which is three times more than the same period last year. The bluefin tuna has been considered a delicacy since early times and can weigh up to 400 kilos when mature but strict fishing limits have to be imposed to ensure the viability of the species with even game fishing restricted.

Family saved from eviction by Local Police THANKS to an apparent error in an eviction o r d e r, o f f i c e r s from the Alicante Local Police refused to allow the eviction of a couple with three children from a property in the Virgen del Remedio neighbourhood. According to the sharp eyed officers, the eviction order did not mention the three children and they did not believe that it was right to allow them to be thrown out onto the street and therefore made the decision to allow the family to stay. The family has lived in the same property for the last four years and admitted that they had entered what was an empty apartment, just one of many owned by a bank. Members of the stop evictions group had been trying to negotiate a stay of execution with representatives of the bank but to no avail and praised the thoughtful officers for their prompt and humane action.

Every company needs a Nicki Burgess IN every successful business, there is an unsung hero without whom, things would run less smoothly. In the case of the EWN Media Group, publishers of six Euro Weekly News titles, three RTN newspaper titles and Sol Times, that person is General Manager Nicki Burgess. She has become a well-respected figure around the regions that the newspapers cover and goes out of her way to make friends with clients wherever she goes. Although a super sales person, as General Manager, Nicki is literally here, there and everywhere, ensuring that the day to day life of the business proceeds as smoothly as possible. She is involved in recruitment, accounts, sales, day to day management and is the first person that proprietors Michel and Steven Euesden turn to when there is a problem. A bit like a swan, she is calm on the exterior whilst paddling furiously to ensure that everything for the company goes according to plan and when it was decided at relatively short notice to hold the Royal Wedding party - featured in this week’s newspaper - Nicki visited various local charities in order to invite guests to attend. But that wasn’t all, she was the glue that held

the entire operation together organising support from local businesses, finding the food, drink and even the bunting and being last out and first in every day in the build up to the event. Nicki even managed to explain to a Spanish cake maker how to create the Union Flag decoration on the special cake. ITV gave the game away THE Local Police in Elche impounded more than 1,000 pairs of fake shoes during a routine traffic control. They stopped a van whose ITV vehicle inspection sticker was out of date but then noticed that two more vans following the first vehicle suddenly turned to avoid an inspection. The police called their colleagues to intercept the vehicles but when stopped the driver of one van tried to run off although he was later taken in.

The occupants of the three vehicles, each of which carried hundreds of pairs of shoes with well-known labels, could not explain convincingly where the footwear came from or produce bills of sale. Closer examination revealed that they were inferior copies of the real thing that were destined for local open air markets. They would have sold for a total of €20,000 police said, although the originals would have sold for three times this amount.

RESIDENTS in the Altos del Sol urbanisation in Torrevieja have been cleaning the adjoining gardens for the last 15 years. The land has yet to be formally recognised by the town hall as municipal property and meanwhile residents have until now preferred to pay to keep the plots tidy and the road clean and swept. They are now asking the town hall to remedy a situation that they liken to living in a legal limbo. Councillor Paqui Parra from Ciudadanos party is passing on their complaints to the town hall. “After 15 years it is incomprehensible that local governments have not known how to find a solution,” Parra said.

Chemical danger drills

READY: Agents zip up against deadly substances.

ALICANTE City Hall’s security department and the National Police unit have carried out their first ever joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear emergency training drills. Training was led by Alicante’s special prevention firefighters (SPEIS) and officers from the National Police’s TEDAX bomb disposal unit. Alicante security minister, Jose Ramon Gonzalez said it was important for firefighters and police to train alongside to improve their coordination. “We need to have our intervention protocols clear and this type of practice really helps to improve response times,” Gonzalez said. One of the exercises involved simulating the decontamination of a person infected with anthrax, a deadly bacterial toxin. Riding high on a bicycle AN Elche cyclist was stopped and his bicycle impounded after he gave a positive reading for drugs. He was detained after jumping a red light - not unusual in city cyclists - but in doing so he collided with a Local Police patrol car. Made suspicious by his manner, the officers tested him for drugs and found, as they suspected, he was under the influence of cannabis. His bicycle was taken to the municipal pound and he now faces a fine of up to €1,000 in a clear warning that no-one, not even cyclists, is exempt from police checks.

WITH Brexit in chaos, and nobody agreeing on anything, Russia becoming very scary and President Trumps’ visit to the UK looming, you would think the British had more to worry about than politically correct fairy stories. Cinderella was a poor, overworked woman and therefore not to be celebrated in any way, even though the ball and the wonderful carriage kept me and others enthralled as children, for a long time and still does. Do you realise that Sleeping Beauty was not asked permission for the prince to kiss her! How could this happen, because he kissed her back to life, much to the joy of the seven dwarfs and countless children? And how about this one, all new mothers should ask permission to change their baby’s nappy. How is this possible? Get a life and smile. Returning to saner subjects, I get so fed up when my sales consultants continually inform me that they lose quite a bit of busi-

THE recent APAH Dog Show was a huge success ALTHOUGH the temperature was quite high, it was much better than the last attempt in 2017 which was held in the middle of a scorching summer. There was a record turnout of dogs, with 20 dogs registered in one class; the largest number of dogs ever registered in one class. APAH is always very lucky to have the dogs at their shows judged by an ex-canine judge, whose experience with judging dogs in UK Dog Shows, always brings a sense of professionalism to the way the dogs are handled. The charity didn’t have as many stallholders contact them as they would have liked, so it is hoped that when the next show is held in November, more will take up the offer of coming along and having a stall. There were the usual APAH stalls, with hard working volunteers, serving up drinks and hot food on the

day, and home-made cakes and pastries, as well as tombola and bric a brac stalls. The ladies on the Dog registration and raff le stalls

were kept busy with the arrival of lots of dogs, and the judge was very impressed with the variety of breeds and condition of all the dogs who came along to compete.

Over all it was a great day and at the end the charity managed to raise €1,116, all of which goes towards looking after the dogs and cats in APAH’s care.

WHEN people enter into the spirit of things, they can have a tremendous time and raise much needed funds for very worthwhile charities. This was much the case last week with Maria & The Pink Ladies/Panthers fundraising Bollywood Night at Mumbai Blue La Florida. With many guests entering into the spirit of things by dressing up as Bollywood Babes, the evening generated €850 for the AECC Early Detection Cancer Charity. This was an exceptional result and all those who took part deserve to be praised for their involvement.

Thank You Happy to be part of the local community AS crowds gathered on the streets of Windsor last Saturday so a band of British expatriates met up to celebrate in the Costa del Sol. The British Embassy was holding a par ty in Madrid, and amongst those who had been invited were Michel and Steven Euesden, proprietors of EWN Media Group and publishers of Euro Weekly News, RTN and Sol Times who thought that it would be more appropriate to spend the money involved in travelling to Madrid on members of the local community. As the Group was to be represented by a senior staff member in Madrid, those who remained on the Costa del Sol put their not inconsiderable skills to organising an event for local, mainly elderly residents, to enjoy the Royal Wedding in company with a drink and a bite to eat. First they had to find a suitable location at short notice and Bob and Linda Hackshaw, owners of the Vil-

lalinda restaurant on the Mijas road, volunteered their delightful property with extensive terraces. The event was sponsored by Currencies Direct in conjunction with media partner Spectrum FM and other local companies including Iceland, Calvin’s Hairdresser, Bunches Florist, Bing Asian, Don Alfonso Restaurant, La Parra Gold and Cardland. Two great entertainers, Antony Wolfson and One Wish Steve volunteered their services and the EWN staff rallied round helping to lay out the tables and chair, hang out the bunting and balloons, preparing sandwiches and drinks and then clearing up afterwards. Some 150 people arrived to share the excitement generated by the wedding, having first being greeted with a glass of Pimms (which flowed freely throughout the day) and to chat with friends old and new. ILLEGAL DRUGS: Another huge haul seized.

Expected to go up in smoke A COMBINED operation resulted in the seizure of a fishing boat containing up to 15 tons of hashish. Working together, officers of the Guardia Civil, the National Police and the Tax A genc y, intercepted a boat which was sailing without an identifying f lag and was challenged by the c u s to m s s u r ve i l l a n ce p at ro l b o at , Arao some 110 miles off Cabo de Palos. Thanks to advice received from the

Dutch, Por tug uese and I tali an authorities it was discovered that the suspect vessel left the port of Stellendam (Holland) early in May heading through the Straits of Gibraltar towards an area of the Mediterranean where drug loads are often unloaded. Although the vessel was supposedly registered in Malta, this was denied by the Maltese authorities and as the b o a t s a i l e d t h ro u g h t h e M e d i t e r ranean, the customs vessel set off

from the port of Alicante to intercept it. When officers boarded the ship, they discovered a crew of three Dutch nationals as well as a Bulgarian and a ver y large number of wrapped bales which they believed contained hashish. Having arrested the men and taken possession of the fishing boat, it was escorted back to Alicante where the bales were unloaded and found to contain hashish and weight 15 tons.

Celebrating the town of Ifach IN 2016, the medieval gothic capital of Ifach was uncovered in the Calpe area and exhibits discovered there will now be on display at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante for the next several months. The exhibition titled The Pillars of the Kingdom was formally opened by the President of the Diputacion de Alicante and the mayor of Calpe, Cesar Sanchez, who said that “we have the obligation to take care of the heritage that our ancestors have left us and to turn it into an opportunity for our people.” He added that the council is going to “reconvert the tourist office so that besides the tourism of the sun and beach, it will appeal to cultural tourism displaying the value of our cultural and historical heritage.” Credit: Ayuntamiento de Calpe

THE Alicante Port authorities were able to create 700 direct and indirect jobs and an economic benefit of more than €300,000 because of two major cruise ship arrivals. Three cruise ships were in p o r t fo r t h e d ay a n d m o re than 6,000 passengers and crew, thanks to a series of adv a n c e p l a n n i n g , w e re w e l comed in the city itself and transported around a number of the sur rounding municipalities. EU directive on insurance information FROM now on, customers taking out insurance policies will be given more information about costs, cover and the risks involved. This is all part of a Spanish government initiative to ensure that people know exactly what they’re buying. IT’S really up to us to decide whether we have a good, bad or indifferent day. How is that you may ask? It’s quite simple. You see it’s not when we wake up, it’s how we wake up. It’s not when we go to sleep, it’s how we go to sleep. Whether we realise it or not, most of us are attached to negativity and drama, whether it’s watching television or reading a book etc. Unless it is empowering, then it doesn’t serve us well. When we go to bed at night, the last thing we do, read or watch will be the last thing we remember before falling asleep. Anything that doesn’t give us peace and calmness before we fall asleep leaves a marinating effect on us for the time we are asleep. We then wake up and the first thing we generally reach for is our phone to check messages, news etc. This really isn’t the best way to start our day as we simply trigger our minds prematurely to naturally start stressing, worrying and planning the day ahead, literally minutes after opening our eyes, leaving us no time to be grateful for the many good things we all have. Our thoughts control our feelings and our feelings determine our emotions, this impacts on our mood for the day, which in

turn affects ourselves and people around us, which will determine our results for the day. I invite you to try this exercise for a month to see what results you get. Before you go to bed, read something that serves you, such as a book on personal growth or an uplifting book that makes you feel happy. Do not read or watch negative news or

violence on television before bed, instead, watch something light-hearted or something that makes you laugh, although, not at the expense of others. Buy an alarm clock, and leave your mobile phone in another room. When you open your eyes in the morning, you won’t be tempted to reach for your phone, so spend that time thinking of

something you are grateful for. Being grateful alleviates worry, fear and even anger as they are opposing emotions and cannot be expressed at the same time. You are the best qualified person on the planet at being you, so it’s up to you to work on yourself and create an amazing life which you deserve. So let’s start with making each day better and build up from there. Remember, there is no road to happiness, happiness is the road and we are already on it. The best way to predict your future is to create it. I HAVE never understood why I have this problem when it comes to eating or preparing tomatoes. It’s as if they possess some weird alien intelligence whose mission it is to make me look bad in the eyes of the Princess. A tomato is not even sure of its own identity. It is a fruit if you happen to be a botanist, but definitely veg if you are the chief cook of the household like me. What I do know is that it’s a treacherous beast and it came as no surprise to learn that the tomato is a member of the deadly nightshade family. They seem to be waiting for me wherever I go and no matter what precautions I take, they ambush me when I am least expecting it, blitzing my clothes. The problem is I love tomatoes;

whether they be part of a Greek salad, a bolognese sauce or simply on toast, but when my eagle-eyed lady gets a hint that I am about to indulge once more, I receive the dreaded Medusa look. It has been known for me to be seated in a restaurant with a napkin tucked

into the top of my shirt; another wedged into my waistband and newspaper draped over both legs, before the Princess will allow me to take one bite of a tomato based dish. It’s embarrassing. And pointless, because invariably I will find that once I have been un-

wrapped there are blobs of tomato on my shoes (white ones of course) or in my hair. I thought I couldn’t go wrong by eating those little bite sized cherry jobs, but no, although I pop one in my mouth and seal my lips tight shut, as soon as I bite down the juice finds the smallest of gaps and spurts out under pressure down my shirt front. My last encounter was with a chilli con carne at a local eatery where, because my dear lady was absent, disaster was inevitable. Cutting into a chunky chip with the edge of my fork, one half of the potato leapt into the air, did a double back flip and taking a dollop of tomato rich sauce with it, hit me in the chest and dropped onto my lap. My white, newly pressed linen shortsclad lap. I was pondering this yesterday as I absently pulled the aluminium ring on a tin of sardines. The lid came away like a coiled spring and showered my shirt with a deadly mixture of fish oil and the inevitable tomato sauce. That stain will never shift, so I have quietly disposed of the garment in the bin and hope that my beloved will not notice its passing.

It was in 1998 that the charity began in a small house in Los Balcones and since then has flourished becoming a household name here in Spain, as it is in the UK, known for offering welfare services, help and support to the over 50’s. Marking this momentous occasion a Gala Ball was held at the Masa Hotel, Torrevieja with 122 guests, made up from volunteers past and present, beneficiaries, members, guests from Romana and supporters. Notable guests included Elizabeth Bell, British Vice Consul, Carmen Morate, Councillor for Charities, Carlos Gonzales, Councillor for Foreign Residents and Israel Munoz, Secretary to the mayor. -IR verb endings in present simple

so we can repeat it for all six changes. WE are still working on our present simple tense of verbs and the changes that they make depending on which group they fall into. To understand how the present simple tense works we have to divide verbs into three categories: 1. Standard verbs which follow simple regular patterns; 2. Root-changing verbs which also follow regular patterns; 3. Irregular verbs of which there are only four. We are currently still in category 1, and we have looked at the changes made to -ar and -er ending verbs. So, in this article we shall look at standard -ir ending verbs, which will mean that one main category will have been dealt with. Let’s take a common -ir verb: VIVIR which means ‘to live.’ Remember that the first thing we must always do is separate the ending -IR from the root VIV. This is a basic procedure that we need to get into the habit of doing whenever we are dealing with verbs. As we have seen with our previous standard verbs, the root VIV will not vary,

You will notice that these are not dramatically different from the ‘-er’ verb endings. In fact there are only two forms (first and second persons plural) which vary. I like to think that -ir verbs have a slight identity problem. They are inclined to copy -er verbs at the drop of a hat. Now let’s put our example verb together. Vivo Vives Vive

I can’t resist reminding you what this all means, just in case you are losing the plot - vivo (I live), vives (you live - when there’s only one ‘you’) vive (he lives, she lives, it lives, and the more formal - you live), vivimos (we live), vivis (you live -

when there’s more that one ‘you’), viven (they live - or more rarely the more formal - you, when there’s more than one you to be formal to). Now you can understand why it’s not terribly convenient to repeat all of that every time! Just in case that last one has upset you, just stick with: viven means ‘they live’ and that will be just fine! Well, there are of course many other standard -ir verbs that behave in the same way, for example: escribir (to write), abrir (to open), recibir (to receive). If you remember we saw in the last article that occasionally the first person singular (I) form ‘does its own thing.’ This also happens with some standard ‘-ir’ verbs, for example salir (to go out). The first person ‘I go out’ is salgo, but the rest of the verb is completely regular. Likewise conducir (to drive) conduzco (I drive), oir (to hear) oigo (I hear). Oir makes some other minor spelling adjustments although it remains a standard verb. However, I see I’ve got rather carried away today so you’ll be sad to know we haven’t got time to discuss oir any further. ¡Hasta la semana que viene!

Could blood help heal? USING blood as a beauty treatment is now a common occurrence, particularly among Hollywood A-listers. The socalled ‘vampire therapies’ are a favourite of Kim Kardashian who was one of the first to draw attention to the rather unusual facial which involves using your own blood in the plateletrich plasma therapy (PRP). But now, the healing platelets, rich in proteins and beneficial properties to help accelerate and repair tissue, bone and skin, are not just being used in the beauty industry as a way of helping you stay looking younger for longer and are being used as a way of helping numerous conditions. Pulled muscles PRP is becoming more common amongst athletes who are reporting that the growth factors in the platelets are helping to heal tendon damage with the blood being a natural healing substance and speeding up the process. Golfer Tiger Woods and tennis player Rafael Nadal are all reported to have received PRP to help treat various problems. Arthritic knees Painkillers and keyhole surgery are the normal options for sufferers, but

Men living with HIV IN Spain it is estimated that between 130,000-160,000 people are living with HIV, with around 20 per cent undiagnosed. Of new cases diagnosed, eight out of 10 of them are men, aged between 29-45 years of age. These are the findings of a report on HIV and AIDS in the country made available to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. Up to June 30 this year, there has been a total of 3,428 new diagnoses of the virus within the Autonomous Communities, Cuenta and Melilla. This rate is similar to those of other European countries. The most common mode of transmission of HIV is through sexual relations. Transmission from drug injecting continues to decline and stood at 2.8 per cent. The report also shows a fall in the cases of the disease being detected among immigrants.

CAREFUL with your finances and pay your credit cards on time to avoid interest charges? Don’t be too smug. Every time you purchase a train ticket; buy a pair of shoes or use public services roughly 40 per cent of the outlay will have gone to the banking industry’s vaults. According to Ellen Brown, chairman of America’s Public Banking Institute, bank interest charges are regressive, which means the poor are milked to gratify the rich. A public banking sector would discount up to 40 per cent off everything we buy or use. This is the reason why the private banking system can’t ultimately challenge nationalised banks like those of Russia, China and Iran. It explains America’s $21 trillion debt. Farmers, manufacturers and transportation costs are dependent upon bank credit. Each in the supply chain must invest, use premises, engage labour, materials and transport, etc. This before

That means we could buy three items for the price of two; our salaries would go 50 per cent farther than they go today.

sport Walking football hits Costa Blanca THE Oldies Gran Alacant Walking Football Club was formed last August and after 37 weekly sessions played their first away game at Rojales on May 22. This motley crew in their first ‘competitive’ match put up a spirited performance eventually going down 8-3 to Rojales on their Astro pitch. They were only 5-3 down early in the third quarter but defensive frailties cost them three further goals. A very fair referee who let no one get away with running except luckily some oldies players! No injuries reported (including heatstroke or sunburn) and they all enjoyed IN what was an important day in the society calendar they played a Ryder cup format, where the captain’s team was pinched against the vice captain’s team. They also had buggy pairs, nearest the pins and some other challenges so the day was very busy. The course was tricky but played well and some very good scores were recorded. The results were: nearest the pins on the par 3’s Bill Peters, Ray Batey, Bill Malcolm and Ian Allison. The best individual score was an outstanding 43 points from Ray Batey which will earn him a large handicap cut, the two’s pot was shared by Nigel Wright and Bill Peters. After they had all replenished themselves with a meal and a few drinks, the presentation took place followed by an auction which raised €300 for the cancer charity AECC. A great day sponsored by Vistabella golf and supported by Ruby’s golf society in memory of former member Ivie Davies.

Playa Flamenca do it again LAST Saturday Playa Flamenca Walking Football team, holders of the 2018 Pride of Spain award, were invited back to play in the annual San Miguel Strollers Walking Football competition. They were invited back as they were last year ’s champions. The competition was held with two groups of three teams on a knock out basis. The Playa Flamenca Walking Wanderers Football team won the top group final against Campoverdy Portabello Walking Football team. The Walking Wanderers won the cup and competition without conceding a single goal. The final tally for the team was 25 goals for and 0 conceded. They have now won four out of the five competitions they have been involved with. A big thank you must go out to Bill and Sandra Whitehouse and the San Miguel Strollers for putting on such a fantastic competition again this year. El Plantio 2 Golf Society and a hole in one WITH 19 members and one guest competing, the Team Joker took place recently with five teams of four players in a shotgun start. Hi-jacking most of the prizes was new member, Barry Walthall, who is in a rich vein of form scoring two birdies and one nearest the pin and achieving the first hole-in-one since December 2017. He also played a big part in helping his team to win the competition but he will suffer for his good form by receiving a healthy cut from his handicap.
