Sniffer dogs to combat teen drug use by Rob Murray BENIDORM City Council is upping their game in the fight against drugs. The latest initiative is to entrust the specialist dog section of the local police to tackle and stop the increasing drug use among teen-
agers and will consist of a series of controls in and around local schools and colleges. In just one year, the number of people caught in possession of narcotics in Benidorm has increased three-fold. Up until now police activity to monitor such crime has been restricted to those on the
night shift and concentrating in leisure areas and public parks. The patrols will now be extended and will be visible in the mornings at schools attended by older pupils. The announcement of this latest initiative was made by Councillor Lorenzo Martinez who said the decision taken was based on the
“good results” since more use was made of drug searches involving the canine unit in August last year. Equally, he said, there have been some concerns shown by members of the local education authority who have requested assistance in tackling the growing drug problem among the youth.
Ride, park and stay
FINESTRAT City Council has announced plans for a hotel for cyclists. They want tourists that choose to use two wheels to explore and get around the locality to not just ride through the area but to spend a few days there too. The land assigned to the project on two plots of municipal land measuring 11,261m2 is near the well-known spot of Font del Molí surrounded by Puig Campana.

Quieter and environmentally friendly buses THE MUNICIPALITY of San Juan has asked for their current fleet of buses to be replaced by hybrid vehicles. They have made a special request to central government in Madrid so that the new vehicles can both reduce the noise pollution and cause less damage to some of the historic buildings. The demands come in the light of a recent report which stated that the passage of heavy vehicles in the area is affecting the structures, with the vibrations causing miniscule cracks that eventually lead to falling masonry.
Free Wi-Fi for tourist hotspot this summer by Carol Palmer TOURISTS using Benidorm’s beaches will receive free Wi-Fi from this Easter. The initiative was announced by the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, who confirmed that all three beaches will have their own free WiFi network that can be accessed by anyone to surf the internet and use the multitude of social networks. The project will be run jointly by the Benidorm council and private company Wiongo and the collaboration was announced at the recent FITUR International Tourism Fair in Madrid. Wiongo will be responsible for the settingup and management of the free Wi-Fi which will operate via 30 devices installed in a num-
ber of different items of ‘street furniture’ such as street lights and traffic signals. Mayor Pérez has clarified that the new service is a “zero cost” for the Benidorm council and only involves them in giving access to the electricity supply to install their equipment. In addition to improving the services available to the locals and tourists that use the beaches – free Wi-Fi is increasingly seen as something that increases competitiveness of a resort – the network will also allow Benidorm to have access to real-time information as to the behaviour of tourists. This will enable them to plan for future tourism policy and improve even further the ‘Benidorm experience’. It’s understood that the Wi-Fi network will be up and running for Easter and at full capacity for the busy summer season.

Space created for extra access LOCALS walking along Calle Esparta in Javea would have noticed already that there’s more space as they make their way along. The maintenance department of the municipality has removed around 20 trees from close around the pedestrian crossing area that makes it easier for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. In addition, extra efforts are being made with the electric company to connect the remaining street lighting which is something that has been demanded by many local residents for some time.
STAR: JeanClaude Van Damme urges crowdfunding scheme
Hollywood star supports local movie project by Mark Rogers HOLLYWOOD actor Jean-Claude Van Damme has given his backing to a crowdfunding campaign to enable a film shot in Poble Nou de Benitatxell to be finished. Star of films such as Timecop and Universal Soldier is encouraging locals to take part in the scheme launched by filmmaker Paco Soto for his latest work Rural Cops which has been shot in the municipality. Much of the film has already been
completed but there is a lack of funds to finish the project. “Anyone can be a sponsor of the film starting from just €5,” said Paco Soto. “But having the support of an actor of the stature of Jean-Claude Van Damme is absolutely priceless.” Filming of Rural Cops began in Poble Nou de Benitatxell back in September 2017 and involved more than 200 local residents as extras in the movie. It features more than a dozen Spanish actors that include Ramón Langa, Pablo Pinedo, Javier Bódalo, Emilio Gavira, Lola
Moltó and Fele Pastor. The film is seen as an excellent opportunity to promote the beauty and the tourist potential of Poble Nou de Benitatxell. La Cala del Moraig, el Puig Llorença, la urbanización Cumbre del Sol, la iglesia de Santa María Magdalena and some of the rural areas such as les Fonts, Lluca and Benicambra were used in many of the film’s scenes. When the film is released, Benitatxell will be known as the fictional town of Torretatxell.
Where’s that chocolate factory? THE TOURIST Office based in Villajoyosa attended to a grand total of 32,263 people during 2017. Figures just released show that 57 per cent of the visitors to the office were Spanish, with the remaining 43 per cent from foreign shores. The majority of the national tourists came from the Valencian Community, closely followed by Madrid and the Basque Country. The most requested places within the municipality for information were related to the local Villa Museum, and the Valor Chocolate Factory and museum found adjacent to the N-332.

New building permission imminent
LOCAL Alicante-based entrepreneur Enrique Ortiz has announced that he has completed completed the initial procedures required to build almost 1,500 new homes in the Vistahermosa area of Alicante. Specifically, they will be constructed in the zone known as APA
9 and close to Lomas del Garbinet. It’s understood that the promoter needs to supply the City Council with some final documents before the formal permission is given, and that if all goes to plan the works will begin during the middle of this year.

Crime figures show Costa differences by Carol Palmer MANY of the local municipalities have shown a significant reduction in the amount of recorded crimes, although Benidorm is one of the areas that have bucked the welcome trend. Figures released for towns with more than 60,000 inhabitants show that the tourist hotspot registered 43.87 crimes per thousand of the population.
This compares with Alicante with 27.25 infractions and Villajoyosa, among the lowest, with 22.52. Torrevieja comes close to Benidorm with a rate of 42.36 crimes. Two of the larger municipalities – Elche and Orihuela – are among the safest areas where there was a rate of only 21 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants. According to police sources, it comes as no surprise that the areas with the higher rates of crime are along the
coast where a combination of tourists, and properties that are often unused for a majority of the year, are a target for the criminal. The figures recorded for both Orihuela and Elche have been described by experts as “surprising”, considering they have both a large population and vast areas of countryside that are regarded as less secure and have been the traditional locations for crime...especially robbery.
HUNDREDS of people turned out on Sunday for the traditional blessing of the animals that is celebrated every year to acknowledge their patron saint, San Anton. Accompanied by their pets, the residents of Benidorm had their wide variety of man’s best friend and others blessed by the parish priest. The event was attended by, among others, Toni Pérez, the mayor of Benidorm, Councillor for fiestas, Jesús Carroblesm and the local Benidorm Queens, Fátima Carrobles and Anna Calbo.
Helicopter rescue for heart attack hiker
A MAN suffering with all the symptoms of having had a heart attack when out walking through the Sierra de Cabeçó close to Busot needed to be rescued by a helicopter.
The alarm was raised on Sunday lunchtime after a call to the police informed them that a 42-year-old man from Xixona in Alicante who was out hiking was suddenly taken ill.

Official population numbers expose gaps IT’S estimated that more than 15,000 people continue to live in the Alicante province without being registered on the padrón. According to official population figures for 2017 published by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) and using the reference date of January 1, the number registered on that date was 1,825,332 although it’s believed that the real population is closer to 1,840,669. The current ‘gap’ of around 15,000 contrasts strikingly with the one that existed only a few years ago in which the official number of the population in the province was estimated by the INE to be higher than the actual number. However, it’s believed that while the official total of inhabitants has decreased by around 120,000, the actual population has more or less stayed the same. The municipalities that have seen the biggest official drop in their population have a large contingent of people from other countries in the European Union (EU) and that this is believed to be an influence on the variance of the official and real figures. Falls in the official numbers means reductions in the amount of money central government gives to individual municipalities and is why a number in the Alicante province have undertaken active padrón registration campaigns. These have been specifically aimed at the foreign residents as it’s a natural and habitual way of life for the Spanish who don’t need to be reminded to sign on. Local municipalities such as Calpe and Moraira-Teulada have been highlighted as those that have ‘lost’ significant numbers of foreigners from their population. Calpe – once close to 30,000 inhabitants – is now just above 20,000 and Moraira-Teulada has fallen from a peak of almost 15,000 to close to 10,000.
Mayor hopes he won’t ‘Go to Jail’! ALICANTE’S Mayor, Gabriel Echávarri, is trying to get the backing of the city’s residents in his plan to get Alicante listed in the next version of the game of Monopoly. Via the municipality website and on Twitter, he is asking people to vote on which cities and towns across Spain that will occupy the 22 squares on the famous board. The towns of La Portera (Valencia), Dolores (Alicante) or Balones (Alicante), could also be part of the next edition. In the 2009 edition, the winning towns were Parla and Cebolla after a hard-fought vote in which city councils and citizens were actively involved in the choice and reached 40,000 votes in total.

CULTIVATION: More than 1,000 marihuana plants found in Altea
by Mark Rogers IN recent days, officers of the National Police have carried out three anti-drug operations in both Alicante and Altea. Eleven people have been arrested, and in one of the raids a crop of almost 1,000 marihuana plants was found. The large crop was discovered in a villa in the exclusive Altea Hills area of the Marina Baixa. In the first of the operations, officers detained two Russian citizens – aged 36 and 42 - and dismantled the enormous cultivation of marihuana. In addition, they found all the necessary lighting and ventilation equipment needed to aid the growth of the plants, as well as night-vision binoculars, radio equipment and other tools which has led the authorities
to believe that other criminal activities, as well as drug trafficking, might be taking place on the premises. The property had previously been investigated by police back in 2016 for similar reasons, but the plants were removed by the previous tenants. The other two operations were carried out in Alicante where the remaining nine people were arrested for distributing cocaine, crystal meth, ecstasy, opium, poppers and magic mushrooms. Searches were made in six homes and a number of clubs where more than 100 grams of cocaine were found among quantities of other types of drugs. They also found €8,400 in cash hidden away and a small indoor crop of 70 marihuana plants.
Dog gone...but later rescued FIREFIGHTERS were called to help rescue a dog that had fallen into a large hole in the ground in Javea. The dog’s owners were out with their pet for a morning walk when its hunting instinct crept in. It spotted a rabbit in the El Mongó area and ran after it, ignoring the owners’ calls of restraint. However, the dog failed to see an abandoned tank in the ground and fell into it, some five metres below. The owners found the dog, but they were unable to rescue it; nor could the dog find a means of escape, and so the local police in Javea were called. They in turn alerted the fire service who arrived equipped with all the necessary equipment to release the pet from its trauma safe and sound.

CHARGES: Altea to pass on costs of hospital tests to drivers
by Dave Bennett DRIVERS who test positive following drink and drugs tests in Altea will be charged for the costs of carrying out the analysis. The City Council has unanimously approved a new by-law to collect €230 for a drug test and €200 for alcohol that are carried out at the Hospital La Vila Joiosa if the tests are requested by the driver under suspicion. If the test is negative, the amount paid will be returned.
These tests are in addition to the initial checks undertaken by the local police. Altea’s councillor for security, Vicent Ripoll explained that the local police are presently carrying out a series of roadside controls aimed at preventing alcohol and drug use. He said that if any driver tests positive, they are welcome to ask for a further test to take place in a hospital...but there will in future be a charge. If this was the case, then the police would have to immediately take the person concerned to the
hospital in La Vila Joiosa to enable the blood test to be taken there. Councillor Ripoll said that the charges have been based on the valuation of the costs to the municipality should such tests be carried out and they are left to pick up the bill. He did, however, go on to explain that so far no driver has requested any extra medical tests after being tested positive for drugs or alcohol, but the charges have been implemented as a preventative measure and deterrent.
Arcade robber caught in police operation A 20-year-old man has been arrested at AlicanteElche Airport in connection with an armed robbery at a Benidorm amusement arcade. The young detainee is suspected of stealing €11,500 at gunpoint using a pistol after entering the gambling and games venue in the popular tourist zone. The incident took place last December 11 when a man wearing a hoodie and covering his face with a balaclava entered the building and approached one of the members of staff pointing a gun at them. He then demanded that they go to the cash register and the safe to withdraw the cash. From entering the build-
ing and running away with the money, the entire robbery lasted less than 60 seconds, such was the planning behind the attack. Specialist teams investigating violent crime in Benidorm took charge of the case and began to follow the tracks left by the armed robber. A thorough review of the CCTV cameras unveiled a man who matched the description of the assailant and managed to identify him accordingly. Police eventually set up an operation to apprehend the suspect and was subsequently arrested at Alicante-Elche Airport as he was about to board a flight to Galicia.

Crossing victim remains in a coma
A WOMAN was left in a coma after being run over in Alicante. The 30-year-old was crossing Avenida de Dénia in the city centre when she was knocked down by a vehicle going in the direction of Valencia. The victim was left seriously injured by the accident and, after being treated at the scene by paramedics was taken to hospital where she remains in the coma. The cause of the incident is also still being investigated.

Top award for popular hotel THE Magic Natura Hotel in Benidorm has been ranked among the best family hotels in Spain. According to the popular website TripAdvisor, it has been placed in seventh position and has finished in a high position for the second year in a row. As it has finished in the top 25 across the country, it is now worthy of one of the Travellers’ Choice Awards, one of the most prestigious granted by the travel portal.
CONCERN: Locals worried about the possible loss of their prized pine forest
Is a plague threatening a local pine forest? by Dave Bennett THERE is a great deal of worry among residents of Balcón al Mar de Xàbia that their pine forests are being threatened. They say that the needles on the tops of the affected trees have turned brown and insist that something out of the ordinary must be responsible, seeing as the new shoots are green and normal.
“If no measures are taken, I’m afraid that we’ll lose most of the pine trees of the Cabo de la Nao, which are among the greatest attractions in this area,” said one of the locals who didn’t wish to be identified. Locals have warned that a least 20 trees appear to be affected by some kind of infestation that, for the time being at least, is unknown although suspected to be due to either insects or a kind of fungus. The affected trees are found in the for-
ests on the Cap Negre, next to the Restaurant Casa Pepe, the green area close to the junction at Calle Eduard Grieg and Claude Debussy, and where Calle Joseph Haydn and Giacomo Puccini meet. Representatives of the residents have contacted the Javea City Council by e-mail to bring the potential problem to their notice in the hope that the cause of the brown pine needles can be identified and controlled before it goes too far.
Not such a Buon compleanno AN alleged member of the Italian mafia has been arrested. He was located in a luxury penthouse closed to a golf course in San Juan, Alicante and understood to be using a fake identity. Fausto Pellegrinetti was looking forward to celebrating his 76th birthday but members of the National Police arrived to bring him an unwanted present...his arrest, which follows 25 years on the run from the Italian authorities. The legal process is now underway to arrange his extradition to Italy in order to serve a 13 prison sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering.

Family saved from burning home AN 85-year-old disabled woman, her daughter and grandson needed to be rescued by local firefighters from an incident in El Verger. According to reports from the Guardia Civil, a fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning in their villa and when the firefighters arrived at the scene, were greeted with a burning house with one of the occupants – the elderly woman of Dutch nationality – trapped inside. Her other family members had managed to get out on their own, but all three were treated for the symptoms of poisoning from smoke inhalation at a hospital in Dénia.
Police raid footballers training session THE PRESIDENT and a number of footballers from CF Calpe have been arrested in connection with a series of crimes. They were taken by surprise when a team of National Police officers burst into a training session in search of possible illegal players that have broken immigration laws.
Up to 15 people were detained for alleged offences of employing illegal immigrants and other crimes against workers’ rights. A number of the players had their apartments searched following the training ground raid as part of the ongoing operation.

FORGETFUL: More passengers means more lost property on the TRAM
Lost and found on the TRAM by Mark Rogers RECENT figures showed that more and more people are using the Alicante-based TRAM service. As a consequence, there’s been an increase in the amount of lost property which for 2017 reached almost 1,500 items, and represents a 6.6 per cent rise compared to the previous year. On average, passengers are losing an average of four items per day, the most popular of which are wallets, purses, travel cards, keys and rucksacks. Oth-
er items left on the TRAM that made up the 1,489 pieces included ID cards, passports, driving licenses, SIP cards, mobile phones, umbrellas and bags. The variety of objects found are handed in by either passengers or members of the TRAM staff and are left in the main stations located in Dénia, Calpe, Altea, Benidorm, El Campello, Marq-Castillo, Mercado and Luceros... the latter three in Alicante. They are kept in these stations for 15 days being taken to a central storage area. After a
BENIDORM City Council continues to improve the facilities available to the increasing number of tourists that use their popular beaches. The area is seeing a growth in the tourism market of 1.2 per cent per year and Benidorm is always looking at ways to attract more people, especially those with disabilities or reduced mobility. As a result, this week has seen a series of works started on the Levante beach aimed at improving their accessibility to people that use crutches, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. A similar scheme was carried out some months ago on the Poniente beach close to the well-known Parque del Elche...or the dove park. Once all the works have been completed, Benidorm will become one of the first municipalities to achieve a Universal Accessibility Certificate along their entire coast. The cost of the work will be close to €25,000 and will cover the replacement of the old wooden walkways and platforms with concrete paths. Not only will the concrete be more resistant to weather and general wear and tear, but above all will aid mobility as it won’t break or splinter and need the resultant maintenance work.

‘Gunmen’ given training update
MORE than 200 gunmen gathered in San Vicente at the weekend to attend a specialised training course on modern explosives regulations. However, these were no ordinary gunmen...they were those used to firing the arquebuses, the traditional type of rifle deployed during almost all the local fiestas, particularly the Moors and Christians parades. They are similar to a musket. Known as arquebusiers, they came from El Campello and Busot – as well as San Vicente – to listen to a talk from a number of professionals that included members of the local police, a gunsmith and experts in explosives and pyrotechnics.

LOCAL communications in Javea are set to be improved thanks to a collaboration with a group of radio hams. The Radioficionados Union of Xàbia (URE) and the Amanecer Radio Club have, between them, expanded the communications network of the municipality to give better emergency radio coverage to the area. This will be of particular benefit to the local Civil Protection Unit. According to area coordinator, Miguel Soriano Benavent, they have mounted a number

THE date for the annual Benidorm Gastronómico has been announced and is part of a series of events being organised to showcase the “powerful gastronomic” ability of its restaurants. The event will take place on May 15, and follows the ‘Day of the Spoon’ food fiestas between February 24 and March 4. All the dates have been deliberately set to avoid the really busy holiday times in Benidorm such as Easter and the summer months of July and August.
THE agriculture sector of the Marina Alta has met with a new enemy in recent months that has been attacking the area. It goes under the name of Xylella Fastidiosa, a bacteria that causes a deadly disease which so far has no known cure. The bacteria is particularly known to affect the almond trees found across the Vall de Pop and Gata de Gorgos. Back in December, entire banks of almond trees were removed across the Marina Alta which has, so far, been the only preventative measure being taken to fight the menace.

Thanks to the new antenna, there will be a more secure means of communication with the central operations HQ in Alicante. In addition, the radio enthusiasts have also launched a new weather station that is freely available on the internet for all to access via a mobile app.
Building work and reformations underway
FIVE MILLION EURO has been allocated by the Teulada Moraira city council for a major programme of work in the municipality. The demolition of the old swimming pool has already been started and there will be a new building that will house a library. The planned “sports city” will include a new pool and paddle tennis courts will also be constructed. Other work that has already begun includes the remodelling of Moraira’s public fountains.

Get on ‘yer bikes....safely by Carol Palmer WORK has already begun to improve the dedicated cycle lane on the CV-70 Benidorm to La Nucia road. The Valencian government are responsible for the programme of works and are also paying the €150,000 costs that will improve road safety for both cyclists and pedestrians alike, specifically along the stretch of road between Urb. Nucía Park and the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano. With a one month deadline for the works to be completed, they should be up and ready in mid-February. The municipality of La Nucia made a number of representations to the Valencia government about the dan-
gers of the existing cycle lane on the CV-70, as it was at the same level as the road and not separated from regular traffic by a barrier or kerb. It’s also a very busy section of the road, used by a number of children and young people who use their bikes to get to school or to access the local sports centre and skate park. The completed work, that will be over 600 metres long, will have gaps in the new kerb every 20 metres that coincide with the currently installed drainage system that allows water to escape after rain. During the work, one of the two lanes will be cut off to traffic in the direction of La Nucia in the section between Nucia Park and the Ciutat Esportiva roundabout.

Clothes recycling up on previous year
GENEROUS residents of Javea recycled a total of 118,330 kilograms of clothing throughout 2017. This is according to data gathered by the Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo (Humana), the organisation that manages the collection and distribution of second-hand clothes in the municipality. Figures also show that the donations last year represent an increase of 5.08 per cent over the same period in 2017 (112,612kg),
which lead them to believe that more and more local people are actually recycling their clothes and seeing the benefits to others as a result. There are a total of 40 Humana containers at a number of points around Javea which take clothes, shoes, accessories and other household textiles. The collection service is carried out at no cost to the City Council and thus contributes to a significant saving in the general rubbish collection bill.

BENIDORM is very quickly becoming a permanent film set. During the course of 2017, the city hosted 95 different productions – up 12 per cent on last year – and has led to 8,700 overnight stays and a boost of €3.5million to the local economy. It has been estimated that Benidorm city centre and its surrounding urban areas saw a camera on the streets for 350 days during the calendar year of 2017, made up of films, TV programmes and adverts.

ON DUTY: Servigroup holiday reps hard at work during Manchester fair
by Mark Rogers POPULAR Benidorm hotel chain Servigroup have been promoting their services at a Manchester tourist fair. Coinciding with the FITUR exhibition in Madrid, Servigroup decided to show off their facilities at the The Holiday and Travel Show held at the Manchester Event City. They were able to announce the latest hotel to join the group – Hotel Trinimar in Benidorm – which is due to open its doors at Easter. This follows a major reformation project to adapt and
upgrade the facilities to qualify for a four-star establishment. The Manchester event has become one of the most looked-forward-to events for the high number of British travellers based in the north of England who visit the fair to get more ideas and suggestions for their annual holidays. This year, over 73,000 people were attracted to the exhibition, with the average age being 56. This is the third consecutive year that Servigroup has been represented at the show and occupied a large 12m2 stand
attended by their friendly holiday reps. They were the only Spanish company at the event. Servigroup were keen to promote their “express transfer” service offered by the company that consists of free transport to and from AlicanteElche Airport for all reservations of five nights or more and booked through their website. Anyone visiting their stand was given a small gift and a special promotional code that allows a 10 per cent discount on any 2018 hotel booking.
Mentor required
A mentor is required to support single-parent members of Guardian Angels and their families. The aim is to provide a ‘friend’, who will be available to listen to members’ problems, provide support and refer them to other specialist services if necessary. Each member is assigned to a volunteer mentor, who keeps in touch and whom they can contact whenever they feel the need, either for a chat on the phone, via
social media, messaging or a face-to-face meeting over a coffee, to discuss any problems they have on an informal but completely confidential basis. The mentor's role is listening, befriending, supporting and referring. AN ENTHUSIASTIC group of Volkswagen Classic car drivers made their way to the top of the Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante on Sunday morning. Drivers and other fans of the iconic car were able to see a number of different VW models on parade that included the ‘Beetle’ and the immediately recognisable T1 camper van. After enjoying a lunch at the castle on the very warm and sunny January day, they continued their journey along the coast from Alicante, passing through Albufera, Playa San Juan and El Campello.

Teulada-Moraira signs a new magazine contract by Carol Palmer FOR another year, at least, Teulada-Moraira will be featured in one of the most important international tourism magazines. They will be promoted in the Ronda Iberia publication which reaches more than two million people in 50 countries. The municipality shows a great reliance in tourism to boost the local economy and continues to innovate new schemes with the aim of reaching even more people and informing them of this often forgotten jewel on the Costa Blanca. A delegation from Teulada-Moraira – that included Mayor Carlos Linares and
Councillor Raúl Dalmau – were also at the popular FITUR exhibition in Madrid that concluded at the weekend, and while there attended a meeting with Spanish airline IBERIA. The result was signing an agreement that allows the municipality to continue being promoted on all Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum flights; a bonus of the deal is that the magazine is seen in over 50 VIP lounges around the world too, bringing Teulada Moraira to the notice of an even wider audience. The success of last year’s promotion certainly bore fruit as, according to the popular search engine Trivago, Teulada Moraira is one of the most wanted tourist destinations.

Keep taking the pictures Trapped TEULADA-MORAIRA and Benissa will once again be hosting the annual FOTOSUB GEAS photography competition. It will be organised by the GEAS Valencia Diving Club and will be held between September 21 to 23. The event was announced at the recent FITUR show by the vice-president of the Alicante province Eduardo Dolón, mayor of Teulada Moraira, Carlos Linares and Councillor Fernando López from Benissa. The seas around this part of the coast are well known for being among the most beautiful in Spain, offering a great opportunity to take some great underwater images.

A 35-YEAR-OLD resident of Teulada-Moraira has suffered from the effects of smoke inhalation after trying to extinguish a fire that broke out on his farm. The fire started in one of his workshops and despite the valiant efforts of the man, couldn’t put out the flames and so called the fire brigade. However, the man’s mother who suffers from mobility issues had to remain in the house – albeit confined in another room away from the fire - as it was considered too dangerous to rescue her while the thick black smoke and flames engulfed the area. Once the fire was brought under control, the woman and her son were taken to hospital with minor burns and the effects of inhaling some of the poisonous smoke.

Caught, and attacked, in the act A COURT in Alicante has issued a nine month prison sentence to a man after beating his girlfriend in Calpe. According to reports, the events go back to November 2013 when the girl arrived home to where she was living with the defendant and found him in bed with another woman. She immediately grabbed her boyfriend and threw him out of the house. However, she let him back in and that led to another struggle between them that got violent when the man punched the woman in the face, causing her to fall on to and break an ironing board. The court has also imposed a fine of €60 on the man’s girlfriend for assaulting the other woman in the house.
Rock rescue
A 72-year-old man has been rescued by a helicopter from the iconic Peñón de Ifach in Calpe. The alarm was raised at 2.30pm when the Norwegian national, who was accompanied at the time, suddenly felt ill as he was walking up the famous Calpe rock. He decided to call the reception of the
hotel he was staying in the municipality, and from there a member of the hotel staff called the 112 emergency number. When it was established where the man was located and that it would be impossible to rescue him by normal means, the fire service called on the helicopter that took him to hospital.
Roman ruins ‘find’ divide opinion
RESULTS of recent research points to the existence of a Roman villa under the Casas Neptuno after being demolished in preparation for a new building. The discovery of the remains along the beachfront has caused a series of mixed reactions in Calpe. Some have demanded that should there be such an ancient building in the municipality, they should be preserved, whereas others have suggested that the find is “mere conjecture”.

FUN OF THE FAIR: Calpe goes to Stuttgart, Germany
Bring on the German tourists by Dave Bennett CALPE’S Department for Tourism has been attending one of the many fairs that have been taking place across Europe in recent days. The municipality was represented at the CMT Fair in Stuttgart, Germany which attracted 250,000 visitors. It’s the second time that Calpe has been at this particular fair, specialising in camping and caravan holidays, after noting the success of last year
that aroused great interest among German visitors. Attracting German tourists to the town of the rock is one of the priorities of Calpe’s tourism department as it’s one on the traditional markets that has been neglected over a number of decades. Even though there is a large German community living in the municipality – the second largest among foreign residents – tourists from that country barely reach 2 per cent each year. Tourism Councillor, Jan Van Parijs,
said the Stuttgart fair is “a great opportunity for Calpe” because it’s taking place when German tourists start planning their holiday’s well in advance and still haven’t yet decided where to book. In addition to Stuttgart, Calpe plans to attend another two fairs in Germany this year; Munich, which will take place from the February 22 to 25, and Berlin, from March 7 to 11. The town was also present at the FITUR show in Madrid along with many other Costa Blanca municipalities.

First of all we shall go through your homework, which I trust you have all worked hard on. It was to create the past participles of a list of verbs. The verbs were all regular, which means that all that was required was to change the “– ar” ending to “-ado” and the “-er” and “-ir” endings to “-ido”. Here are the verbs with the answers: Trabajar – trabajado cocinar – cocinado bailar – bailado aprender – aprendido comer - comido firmar – firmado visitar – visitado tener – tenido comprar – comprado conducir – conducido ir – ido cambiar - cambiado The one that might have made you think twice was “ir – ido”, but as you can see it actually behaves itself as an ordinary regular verb, which makes a change. As I said in the last article, the vast majority of verbs behave in this way, but there are a few that were different, or irregular which I listed for you. The promise last lesson was to talk more about the words that translate as “have” or “has” in sentences like:
He hablado con mi vecino I have spoken to my neighbour Has escrito una carta You have written a letter Ha dormido bien He has slept well Firstly I want to remind you of a principle that we have to learn right at the beginning of our Spanish studies, and that is that you cannot translate words literally from one language to another. The reason I say this now is because a lot of people would automatically assume that “I have” should be translated as “tengo”, “you have” as “tienes” and so on. However, “tengo”, “tienes” and the other forms of the verb “tener” relate principally to ideas of possession. “Tengo una casa” (I have a house). There are other uses of “tener” such as “Tengo una idea” (I have an idea) or “He tenido un accidente” (I have had an accident) which do not strictly refer to “possession”, but have related meanings and require the use of “tener” as the main verb in the sentence. However, when we say “I have spoken” we are not talking about possessing anything. We don’t own something called “spoken”! It is clear that the word “have” in English has an entirely different meaning in this context. In fact, rather than talking about possession or similar, it is being used specifically to create the time in which something happened. If you think about the meaning of the two phrases: “I speak” and “I have spoken”, you should realize that the
only difference between them is to do with time – when the speaking was being done. Therefore, the word “have”, as well as expressing possession, is also a word that helps us to form a past tense of a verb. It is really quite reasonable to assume that when expressing this idea in Spanish a completely different word has to be used. To translate “have” in this meaning, we use parts of the verb “haber” as follows: “he” (I have), “has” (you have - familiar), “ha” (he or she has, you have - formal), “hemos” (we have), “habéis” (you have – plural), “han” (they have). That is the basic explanation of how we translate “have” with past participles to form the tense of a verb. However, it might need a bit of time to digest, and there is plenty more to say, so we’ll take it slowly, step by step.

Just by way of an exercise this week, I decided to conduct my own survey on the use of mobile phones in public places. It was all extremely scientific . . . I did a head count. Without going into the actual figures, I worked out that over a one hour period, more than 30% of the people either passing through the small square where we were seated, along with fellow caffeine junkies at adjoining tables where we were enjoying our morning coffee, were using their mobile phones. A third of the people in other words, had their eyes, but rarely their ears, glued to the damn
things, with very few appearing to actually be making or receiving calls. The mobile phone has gone beyond its original objective of being able to communicate on the hoof if the need arose, or to be able to cope with any unforeseen emergency without having to seek out a public pay phone. If the anti-social aspect of being force fed other peoples conversations in confined spaces was not enough, we now have the bizarre sight of half the population with permanently bowed heads, texting, Googling, or playing some stupid game on their smart phones whilst eating a meal in a restaurant, sitting on a train, or standing in line at the bank. It’s no wonder that good conversation is a dying art and wet shoes a common occurrence in men’s public toilets. And you had better be on the alert when simply walking through a crowded shopping centre, because the risk of injury through collision is very real. Yes it’s great that from the time when I was a kid and using two cocoa tins and a bit of string to communicate with my mate over the garden fence, science has progressed to phones the size of a

Churning… the worst enemy of your pension or investment portfolio?

So, before anyone asks, no I’ve not given up financial services to campaign against the dairy industry! Churning, in financial terms, is when a financial advisor persuades a client to buy or sell funds with the sole intention of generating commissions, rather than acting in the client’s best interests. This unethical practise is illegal in the UK, so why is it so prolific here in Spain? The problem lies in the fact that in Spain, financial advisors can still receive hidden payments from investment fund providers. I have seen numerous examples here in Spain where companies have found a new fund provider who will pay them a 3-5% ‘entry charge’ when they persuade their clients to invest in that particular fund.
This generates problems in two ways: Firstly, that 3-5% comes right out of the client’s pocket, and is either paid for by reducing the number of units you buy in the fund, or by elevating the fees for a period of time, normally 5 years, in order to recoup that payment. This can leave the client playing catch up from day one. The other problem, and often even more damage results from this practise, is that funds that an advisor wouldn’t usually recommend - perhaps because they don’t have a strong track-record, are from an
unproven fund house, or are poorly regulated – are finding their ways into client’s portfolios, thereby lowering the quality of their investment portfolio.
The funds your advisor chooses for your pension or investment portfolio, should be chosen independently, after rigorous research. I am purchasing a holiday apartment and have recently received a letter from my builder notifying me that completion will be delayed by over a year and that I have a deadline to submit any allegations. Am I entitled to claim damages in respect therefore? My purchase and sale contract does not include damages for delay clause, neither discharge the builder from non-compliance with the delivery date, or describe the steps to be taken. Is there any legal protection in my particular case? What type of damages can I claim? Under no circumstances do I wish to terminate this agreement but obviously, I cannot claim its compliance. It is possible to regulate in a purchase and sale agreement the obligation to deliver the property under construction, by establishing a deadline and economic penalty in favour of the purchaser for specific delay periods in the delivery. Should the purchaser be no longer interested in the purchase due to delay in the agreed delivery date, he or she may opt to terminate the contract, or otherwise opt for the agreed economic penalty or damages for delay. In your particular case, the purchase and sale agreement for holiday apartment between you and the builder does not regulate the seller’s obligation to deliver the property within a
contractual deadline. According to Spanish jurisprudence, in this case, delivery within a specific period cannot be considered as an essential aspect. However, although no delivery date has been agreed in writing, it can be inferred from the contract and the letter sent to you that there is a verbally agreed deadline and that the builder acknowledges his delay. Therefore, you are entitled to claim damages for delay. Apart from a likely moral damage, which is difficult to quantify and succeed, the damage consists of the impossibility to enjoy the apartment for holiday purposes during more than a year: summer holidays, Easter Holidays, weekends or bank holidays…
You should quantify the damages, check all the documents and claim any expenses arising out of having had to spend holiday periods in other accommodation. Likewise, you should claim any other expenses resulting from the delay. You could also affirm that due to the delay you have not been able to rent the apartment to a third party, with its subsequent economic loss. If there is no agreement, you may opt to go to courts, always provided that you prove the existence of damages and their quantification.

I am so concerned that when a report is produced by professionals, pointing out the downside, it seems to carry no importance with the press and no time taken for any discussions. There are always two sides to any negotiations and I don´t feel that the UK is facing up to the reality of trying to replace a structure that has been in place for over 40 years, and pretty successfully. I understand that one of the most important issues is the customs and single market. Although this appears to be one of the UK’s demands, how can this be granted, as Norway, for a start, would be very hostile as they have to pay to be in this club and accept immigration. Then of course, there is Ireland, and indeed, Gibraltar, which has just been put on hold. We shall see, but I and many others are feeling very uncomfortable at what is happening and the time taken to not come to any conclusions. As expats, we have no certainty of our position at the end of all this. I am very aware that a large number of expats, myself included, would like the option of remaining European, as I feel so distant from my country now, which is very sad. It would appear, at long last, that the housing market seems to be recovering rather well and many people are still following their dream of living in Spain. I

launched Expat Services some time ago, but because of the housing market having taken a dip for quite some time, the need for the services I offer was limited. Over the Christmas and New Year period I watched quite a number of programmes where people were following their dreams of living in Spain and I became more concerned as time went on.
The reality of purchasing a property in Spain is far removed from their expectations and priorities. Having bought and sold apartments just recently, the process is far from easy, very expensive and the paperwork and costs change depending on the area. health & beauty Stress – the signs are there STRESS is normal. It is what we feel when a situation is hard to handle. Adrenaline rushes through the body, increasing heart rate and boosting mental and physical alertness. We feel sweaty, tingly and get butterflies. Too much stress can damage your immune system and heart; increase your chances of serious health problems; reduce life-expectancy and damage your sex life. One in four people will have a mental health problem this year, and are responsible for half of all long-term absences from work. Unchecked mental health problems can be very serious indeed. About three-quarters of the people treated for depression are women but about three quarters of the people who commit suicide are men. Stress can be caused by a number of issues, with work-related, unemployment, money worries, bereavement, moving house, and a break up of a relationship leading the list.
Short-term ups and downs are normal but when you start having long-term problems in one or more of these areas, the stress will mount. That’s not because you’re weak; that’s because you’re normal. A relentless build-up of pressure, without the opportunity to recover, can lead to harmful stress. The important thing is to recognise the warning signs while you can do something about it. Common signs are eating more or less than normal; mood swings; low self-esteem; feeling tense or anxious; not sleeping properly (or wanting to sleep all the time); poor memory or forgetfulness and excessive drinking and/or drug use. There may be physical signs too like headaches, irritable bowel syndrome or aches and pains. If symptoms are making you unwell it would be advisable to seek help without delay. You should certainly consult a health professional if you are depressed because of stress, or if stress is causing you anxiety or leading to panic attacks.
Eating clean Pick whole foods The basic idea of clean eating is to choose foods that are as close to their natural form as possible. So instead of boxed, bagged, or packaged foods, choose fresh, whole ones. Think whole turkey instead of frozen turkey meatballs or raw grapes instead of gummy snacks made with fruit juice. Bonus: When you avoid highly processed foods, like chips, cookies, and readyto-eat meals, you skip their loads of calories, sugar, salt, and saturated fat. Eat more whole grains Refined carbs, like white bread, pasta, and rice, lose nutrients during the manufacturing process. Trade them for whole wheat bread and pasta and brown or wild rice. Or opt for other whole grains like oatmeal, popcorn, barley, or bulgur. This change can have a big impact: Studies show that a diet high in whole grains can lower your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colon cancer. Load up on fruits and veggies These natural foods are two staples of clean eating. Some clean eaters say all your produce should be fresh. But others say that frozen and canned options are the next best thing, since they have just as many nutrients. Just read the label to make sure you’re not getting extra sugar or salt. Also choose whole fruits instead of juices, which have less fibre and more sugar. Aim to get at least five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Watch out for salt and added sugar Clean foods are naturally low in salt and sugar, and adding them goes against the as-natural-as-possible approach. Since processed foods are a major source of them, you can slash your intake when you avoid them. Otherwise, read food labels to look for added sweeteners and salt, even in foods that seem healthy, like yogurt
or tomato sauce. Also keep tabs on how much you add to your foods and drinks. Try flavouring with spices and herbs instead. Skip artificial ingredients Artificial colours, sweeteners, preservatives, and other manmade ingredients don’t have a place in a cleaneating diet. At the supermarket, read food labels and avoid items with the fake stuff. Sip plenty of water Instead of sugar-heavy soft drinks and juices, sip low-calorie beverages, such as water and herbal tea. Water can curb your hunger and help you feel full, but it can also fend off fatigue and give you more energy. Miss flavoured drinks? Try infusing your water with a slice of citrus or sprig of mint. Rethink alcohol and caffeine Some clean eaters cut them out entirely in favour of drinking plenty of water. Others say it’s OK to have them in moderation. Clean eater or not, experts recommend no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine (about three to five 8-ounce cups of coffee) per day, and one serving of alcohol for women and two for men. Also skip the sugary extras: Opt for plain tea or coffee, and avoid sweet mixers for alcohol. Decide if you’ll go organic Organic farmers use natural pesticides and avoid man-made ones, so some people say organic produce is the best way to eat clean. It’s up to you to decide how important it is to your
diet. You can also shop at your local farmers market to find out what kinds of pesticides the vendors use. Another tip: Pesticides usually wind up on the outsides of fruits and veggies, so you can choose non-organic foods with skins you don't eat, like avocados, corn, and onions Be smart about meat and dairy Meat, dairy, and eggs you buy at the supermarket may come from animals that get growth hormones and antibiotics. Clean eaters avoid them and choose organic or opt for local sources that raise animals humanely. A farmer’s market is a good place to learn more about where your meat and dairy come from. CAPRICE: Starting 2018 with a performance in March
Caprice – Just one of those things Caprice, the all ladies choir are now well into rehearsals for their first main performance of 2018 which will take place at La Senieta, Moraira on March 2 at 7.30pm. This new concert, ‘Just one of those things’ features the wonderful music of Gershwin and Cole Porter together with some of the group’s favourite musical theatre and popular songs. Aileen Lightfoot, musical director will be conducting the choir accompanied
by Kirsty Glen on the piano. After a successful first year of concerts in 2017 the choir are hoping to continue entertaining audiences with the blend of female voices which works really well for both the jazzy songs and the slow lyrical ballads which are becoming the group’s trademark. The performance will be helping to raise funds for Asociación de Familiares de Personas con Alzheimers, TeuladaMoraira, a very worthy cause which
provides support for families affected by Alzheimers. Following the General Meeting on February 1 the guest speaker will be Philip Ashley, the Musical Director for the Vall del Pop Singers, and his talk “Music Speaks Louder than Words”. Philip Ashley started singing and stage performing at school and has continued his work in entertainment ever since. As well as Singing qualifications, Philip also holds a professional teaching qualification, which has enable him to provide vocal training to individuals, as well as Musical Direction for shows, choirs and small ensemble group. He also holds business management qualifications and a BSc. in Youth Work & Social Policy. His professional theatrical career began at the Bedford Corn Exchange as a lighting technician, which provided valuable experience and the opportunity to work with seasoned professionals such as Danny La Rue, Jess Conrad, Richard Stilgoe and Peter Skellen. Philip has also free-lanced for other firms working on sound and lighting for outside music festivals, and in other backstage capacities on a number of stage shows, encompassing all the roles that go into running a theatre. As a producer, responsible for the overall running of a production, Philip has produced over 50 shows including stage musicals, revues and concerts. Following on from his work with the charity organisation, St John Ambulance, Philip uses some of his shows to raise money for local charities.

Spanish gardens – the Roman influence GARDENING in Spain reflects the different styles of Spanish art, including influences from Roman, Islamic, Italian, French, and English gardens. Modern Spanish gardening emphasise gardens and their surroundings, focusing heavily on both urban horticulture and landscape architecture. Spanish gardens are always affected by the climate of the country due to the ground in Spain being generally drier than in its neighbouring countries of Portugal and France. High levels of sun and the resulting radiation in Spain have led to the creation of smaller, indoor gardens. Gardening in Spain began during the Roman period. Ancient Rome was very advanced in regards to its architecture and engineering, and their aqueducts helped irrigate gardens in remote areas. Because of this, they were able to create swimming pools and lakes, which emphasized the beauty of the gardens. Romans were also the first to use topiary in their gardens. Roman gardens were linked to the domus, the home of the Roman upper class. The entrances
of these homes were typically decorated with sculptures and led to gardens containing Mediterranean vegetation. This model was also the forerunner of the villa, a rustic farm that generally served to accommodate middle-class civilians. There were also urban gardens were organised around an atrium and served as a communal area for all the social classes. The centre of atriums had a lake decorated with mosaics, vases, or statues, and walls decorated with frescos. Roman gardens usually had structural and architectural elements such as porticos, arches, columns, swimming pools, wooden kiosks, pergolas, arbours, and even artificial grottos. Water ran in abundance through channels, sometimes with small jets. Apart from the Roman domus and villas, there were also several other urban areas full of greenery, such as the local gymnasiums and theatres; one example being at the Theatre of MĂŠrida which had a garden, sculptures and a sundial.

Cats and ticks What are cat ticks? Cat ticks are spider-like, eggshaped, blood-sucking creepy crawlies. They have eight legs and vary in size from about 1mm to 1cm long. Adult ticks look a bit like small spiders. Ticks are common in woodland, grassland and heath areas, but can also be found in your garden if you live in an area with lots of wildlife. You are most likely to come across ticks between spring and autumn, but they are active throughout the year. Ticks don’t fly or jump, but climb or drop on to your cat’s coat when you brush past the area they are sitting in. How do I know if my cat has a tick? Ticks are big enough to spot. Run your hands over your cat’s body when they come home for dinner each evening to check for any lumps or bumps. A tick will feel like a small bump on your pet’s skin. They tend to attach themselves to areas around a cat’s head, neck,
How do I remove cat ticks safely? Cat ticks carry diseases, so it’s important to remove any that attach themselves to your cat as soon as possible. Rapid removal lessens the risk of disease. This can be tricky, as you need to be careful not to squeeze the tick’s body, or allow its head to get stuck inside your cat. Squeezing a tick’s body can cause it to expel blood back into your cat, increasing the risk of infection. After removing the tick, examine it to make sure the head and mouth parts were removed. If not, take your pet to your veterinarian to remove what’s left in the pet’s skin. 5: Disinfect the bite site. If the bite site remains red or becomes inflamed, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Keep an Eye on Your Pet

Football – Last weekend ‘record’ attendances were set at three Premiership grounds. A full-house of 30,600 at the Amex Stadium saw Brighton walloped 4-0 by Chelsea for whom Eden Hazard netted his 100th career League goal. There were 29,785 fans at The Bet365 Stadium to see Paul Lambert celebrate his first victory as Stoke manager, 2-0 over Huddersfield, and 21,841 fans inside the redeveloped Turf Moor, saw Burnley beaten 1-0 by Manchester United.
Thanks go to all members and guests that turned up Tuesday. It was a perfect golfing day especially for January and the course was in tip top condition as usual. The day produced some excellent scores as well as some individual shots. The nearest the pins were all hotly contested with people putting and chipping in from long distances. The Longest Drive was a bit of a monster shot from Hans Benzler. This month’s winners were: Members 1st Steve Arnold 35 points off 20, 2nd Derek Ashton 33 points off 19 3rd Pat Bradden 32 points off 16.
