Hospital expansion plan announced by Lynn Whittaker XIMO PUIG, the president of the Valencian Community, paid a visit to the Vega Baja Hospital and announced plans for a potential expansion to the busy health centre. He said that the Ministry of Health is currently in talks with the management team at the hospital near to Orihuela – that already serves half of the population of the Vega Baja – to assess the current and future requirements of the local demographic that includes many UK citizens. Patients have been demanding a
necessary extension to the hospital for many years, something that has now been acknowledged by the Generalitat in Valencia. Puig stated that the overall objective is to offer better care to the users of the hospital although until the study is completed it won’t be known the amount of investment required or, indeed, when that might be available. “The extension is necessary to improve and expand the portfolio of available medical services. It forms a large part of our costs, currently 6,500 million euros, which is 40% of our actual budget, “said Puig.
The Minister for Health, Carmen Montón, was also part of the official delegation to the Vega Baja Hospital, said that the proposed extension could enable the centre to have enhanced outpatient consultation departments and extra operating theatres to increase the capacity for specialist surgical procedures. Not only would the size of the building be expanded, provision would also be made for the necessary extra staff in the new facilities. The Vega Baja Hospital has recently seen an expansion of 269 metres to the Accident and Emergency Department at a cost of €1,000,000.

Unemployment falls year-on-year

THE number of unemployed people in the city of Murcia fell by 8.7 per cent last year and is the latest of a number of figures affecting the region showing an upward and positive trend. The 32,716 people officially registered without work is the lowest since 2009 when the number stood at 31,021. The data contrasts strongly with the levels of 2012, 2013 and 2014 when more than 40,000 people were unemployed in Murcia.

INVESTMENT: PLD Space get welcome financial boost
EU funding launches space project by Steve Collins PLD Space, a company based in Elche, has announced that they have now been able to raise enough money for them to continue with their latest project. Two million euros has been provided by the European Union (EU) to allow them to carry on with developing the ARION 1 vehicle that can be used again and again. However, this initial funding only goes some way to the total of
€8 million being sought by the company from a range of private investors. Raul Verdú, business director of PLD Space said: “This support from the EU now confirms our position among such projects and allows us to develop further in the future.” Chief Executive Officer, Raúl Torres, added his own comments on the news saying, “We are now much closer to developing a space rocket that allows Spain to have its contribution to the world of space explorations. Such an op-
portunity makes Spain only one of ten countries throughout the world.” If everything goes to plan, and this funding will certainly go a long way to making it a reality, the first launch is expected for later this year, with ARION 2 launching in 2020. “We’re expecting a very busy year with the aim of building the prototypes and testing the finished models at Teruel Airport, which although 3 hours away from Elche is the perfect location,” said Verdú.

History preserved for future generations MORE than 700 years of the history of the Murcia region has been saved in digital form. Mainly, it’s been written ancient documents that have dominated the collection, but a number of more recent pieces, including photographs and videos, have also been converted into more modern forms. Known as the Proyecto Carmesí (Crimson Project), it’s been an initiative carried out by the Fundación Integra, under the control of the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration, with the objective to preserve old documents and bring them to interested parties both now and in the future by digital means. Finance Minister, Andrés Carrillo, said: “This project seeks to bring together a regional heritage through these digital platforms. In many cases they are very old and under normal circumstances would be difficult to bring them to a wide audience. We can make them available to our citizens from both a personal interest point of view and for use in academic studies.” Since the project began in 2005, and broken down into areas, there are 69,525 pages of medieval documents

ORIHUELA’S Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, has announced that action will be taken to address the issue of fly tipping. Concerns have recently been shown on the Orihuela Costa about the amount of illegal dumping and the cleaning up will now be a priority. Three main areas will see cleaning teams and the tasks will be completed after three or four days. Two landfill plots in PAU26, and another located in the Plan H-1 Villarosa sector will benefit at a total cost to the municipality of €6,000.

Veteran and heroic police honoured TORREVIEJA has celebrated their ‘Day of the Local Police’ with a ceremony that took place on Wednesday afternoon. The event will acknowledge the work of those officers that have completed 25 and 35 years of dedicated service, and were presented with diplomas. In addition to the recognition of long service, others that have performed heroic or outstanding deeds during the past year were also rewarded. This annual celebration always takes place on the same date – January 17 – as it’s the anniversary that the local police service was formed 184 years ago in 1834.

Airport continues record breaking run IT would come as no surprise to anyone that has been following the trend over the past 12 months to see that Alicante-Elche Airport has closed the year with the highest passenger numbers in its history. Figures just released by airport managers AENA showed that the airport handled 13,713,061 travellers. This represents an increase of 11.1 per cent over the previous year and consolidated Alicante-Elche Airport as fifth in the list of Spanish airports behind Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and Malaga. International passengers totalled 12,316,400 – up 11.7 per cent – and those of Spanish nationality increased by 5.7 per cent to 1,381,201. Visitors to and from the UK continued to more than dominate the numbers with 5,853,046 passengers, followed by Holland (927,992), Germany (882,961), Norway (756,228), Belgium (627,355) and Sweden (577,903). Actual flight numbers were also up on the 2016 level by 9.4 per cent with 95,322 operations of which those connected to the UK accounted for 36,295.

NATIONAL Police in the centre of Alicante have arrested two children under 15-years-old in the process of robbing items from inside a number of storage facilities. Both were caught in the act by the officers and it’s understood that they had previously stolen from other points. The alarm was raised by a local resident who noticed that the teenagers had gained access to the storage area by kicking down and climbing over the perimeter fence.

A CAR was discovered on fire in a parking area in El Malecón in the same place where two other cars were burned out around a month ago. According to reports from the emergency services, nobody suffered any
injuries and the fire was quickly extinguished by the six firefighters called to the scene. The flames didn’t affect the entire vehicle and the cause of the fire is still, at this stage, unknown.

TWO kinds of antibiotics have been taken off the shelves in Spain after higher than recommended levels of histamine were discovered. Those concerned are injections and tablets named Genta Gobens and intravenous solutions of Gentamycin Braun...the latter only used in controlled hospital conditions. Gentamycin is used to combat serious infections such as septicaemia, including those affecting the central nervous system, the urinary tract, gastro-intestinal infections, subcutaneous skin infections and burns, and severe virus types affecting the respiratory tract and bones.
MEMBERS of the Chinese community make up the third largest in Elche. They are followed by Moroccans and Romanians and in less than a decade, have increased their number from barely 500 to over 2,000 and have overtaken citizens from Ecuador and Columbia. It’s estimated that as many as 20 per cent of the Chinese population in Spain now live in Elche. According to the latest data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) the Chinese population registered in Elche amounts to 2,070 and even exceeds the
number registered in Alicante city where 1,593 Chinese citizens are on the padrón. Elche is at the forefront of cultural diversity in the Alicante province and is the home of not only the traditional and popular Chinese restaurants. In recent times, businesses such as beauty treatments, hairdressers and bars have been added to shoe manufacturing, clothing stores and ‘multipurpose’ shops that have been most associated with the Chinese. One Chinese citizen, who has been working in Elche for four years running a clothing empire, is more than happy. “At the moment, we don’t intend to return to China. We are very content here in Spain,” he said.
Former city mayor mourned THE CITY of Orihuela observed two days of official mourning earlier this week following the death of the former mayor, Pedro Cartagena Bueno. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning and both Sunday and Monday, the day of his funeral, were declared as official days of mourning the man which many have described as “Orihuela’s favourite son”. The flags on municipal buildings were
also flown at half-mast as a sign of respect for the man who presided over the area from 1970 to 1979. His death was announced by current Mayor Emilio Bascuñana who expressed condolences on behalf of the people of Orihuela to Pedro’s family and friends. The funeral service took place on Monday morning at La Catedral del Salvador.

A number of politicians from the opposition Partido Popular (PP) in Algorfa have already requested his resignation, saying that he has not shown the correct example required of a public official. A statement from Manuel Ros said: “These events were as a result of something I did in my private life and not connected with my role as mayor of the municipality. I am deeply sorry and I can assure you that these events will not be repeated.”

Passport area gets ready for Brexit changes by Lynn Whittaker ALICANTE-ELCHE Airport is in the process of expanding their passport control area. The works that began in October last year and are expected to be completed in June of this year is partly due to the UK leaving the European Union (EU) in March
2019 and new EU regulations calling for increased control and passenger safety. With almost 6,000,000 passengers using the airport from the UK every year, they will need to go through a different passport control than they currently do and so the facilities are being improved and increased to cope with the extra demand.
EXPANSION: Alicante-Elche Airport to have more passport control booths The total cost for the enhancements is €1,116,800 and will see an extension of 900 square metres made up of 694m2 for passport control and 206m2 for new toilets. During the second phase of the works – also hoped to be completed for the

TWO MEN from San Fulgencio face eight years in prison for possessing drugs. They were found to have more than two kilos of cocaine between them, and allegedly one of them gave the drug to the other who was then responsible for its onward distribution. The cocaine was found in both their homes and their cars. The two were in front of the Provincial Court of Alicante and the prosecution service was seeking and eight-year prison sentence for them.

Rubbish arsonist caught in the act LOCAL Police based in San Pedro del Pinatar arrested a man believed to be a local arsonist. He specialises in setting fire to rubbish containers and it’s believed that he’s responsible for at least 11 blazes, some of which also burned adjacent palm trees. The latest two acts occurred in Calle Campoamor de Lo Pagán in which two more bins were destroyed, the first of which was around 5.30am in the morning when the alarm was raised. 45 minutes later, police and the fire service were alerted to another container on fire in the same street. Unmarked police vehicles were then sent to the scene to find the arsonist and by 6.40am they’d found him setting fire to yet another container 400 metres away in Calle San Lorenzo. After a chase on foot down the street, a 32-yearold Colombian was arrested with several lighters and flammable materials on his person.

TORREVIEJA’S former mayor Pedro Hernandez Mateo was back in court this week. The plaintiff in this case is seeking an extra four years of public disqualification – on top of the 11 years already handed down – due to Mateo not holding as many as 11 council meetings between 2003 and 2007. For large municipalities with more than 20,000 people, it’s mandatory that these meetings are held each month. Mateo’s defence is that this was due to ‘administrative irregularities’ although his own defence counsel said that the meetings weren’t held because they coincided with vacations.

Spies in bars control noise levels by Steve Collins BENIDORM and Torrevieja, among other popular tourist centres in Spain have for some time had noise limiters installed in discos, clubs and some bars. Not only does the equipment limit the sound of music, it also automatically shuts it down at a specified time; usually between 4am and 4.30am. These sound limiters are also directly linked to the town halls that are immediately aware of any major infringements. Such a system is now in operation in Elche and the department responsible for business in the city now has almost 100 per cent control of this form of noise pollution. There are now obligations in the hospitality and entertainment industry that require the installation of such equipment

Regional inflation shows steady fall
THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the Murcia region ended 2017 with a year-on-year inflation rate of 0.6 per cent. The figure was announced after the rate remained unchanged in the last month of the year. The rate was less than that recorded in Spain overall which, despite December being the same as the region, finished the year half a point above at 1.1 per cent. Prices in the Murcia region began the year with an inflation rate of 3 per cent and with them moderating gradually throughout 2017, the current level has been reached.
Ship ahoy! LIMITS: Bars and clubs in Elche now being ‘wired for sound’ that restricts the number of decibels emitted from either live or recorded music sources. Should any of the venues exceed the permitted levels, then a record is left on one of the dedicated computers in the town hall. If any premises continues to go over the
sound limit, then the City Council can take any appropriate action. It also allows them to spot if any bar or club owner manipulates the equipment. It’s not only pubs and clubs that are required to have the sound limiters. They have also been installed in gambling and
gaming premises that have become louder with an increase in the number of users. Despite the new requirements and the outlay for the limiters and associated equipment estimated at around €3,000, the sector is complying with the monitoring.
Increase in over 65s divorce rates BARELY a generation ago, it would have been unthinkable that pensioners would be separating and divorcing at the rates they now are. The trend has been reinforced thanks to recent data issued by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) which shows that for the Murcia region alone, 192 women and 291 men of retirement age applied to end their marriage. It appears that many have taken the
view that ‘life begins with retirement’ with some believing that they are better off as pensioners now that they’ve raised children who have now left home. They simply want to live alone in their older years. In 2016, 241 men and 169 women over 65 years of age were divorced in the Murcia region. There were also 50 people over 70-years-old who divorced (27 men and 23 women) compared to the 2015 figures that recorded 40 men and 29 women.
VISITORS to Alicante – until Sunday January 28 – will get the chance to visit ‘The Andalucia’, a full-size replica of one of the Spanish galleons that dominated the seas up to the 18th century. Belonging to the Nao Victoria Foundation, the 55 metre long boat is part of a scheme that promotes such events that include replicas of such ships. This particular replica was fully completed in 2010 and has travelled more than 50,000 nautical miles crossing all the world’s oceans and seas. The ship can be found in Alicante port, close to the Volvo Ocean Race site.

Monday morning and it was the time of year that I dread and Ozzy and Woody, our two rescued felines, positively hate. It was the day for their annual booster shots. Not that they have any awareness of dates, but as soon as they catch a glimpse of the pet carrier being carted in, they do a 0-60 that makes the Jaguar F Type look pedestrian as they dash for their hidey-holes. When they were young it was a relatively easy task to coax them into the carrier together, but as time passed they wised up to the fact that this contraption meant a trip to a strange smelling building peopled by stranger smelling humans intent on stabbing them in the neck with a vicious looking spike. So we gave up trying to take them together because invariably as we opened the door to push cat number two inside, cat number one would explode out and
disappear for the next three hours, necessitating a phone call to the vet to make a fresh appointment. We tried bringing the basket in to the house several days in advance just to get them used to seeing the darn thing there. And it worked, but only once, because stupid they are not. Now we make two separate appointments and go for the full-on approach. This entails me whistling nonchalantly then making a quick grab and bundling one of the little dears into the carrier before he knows what’s happening. Looks good on paper, but in practice it has one serious flaw. Out go all four legs splayed across the door of the carrier, clinging on for dear life like a cartoon cat and shrieking disapproval. Twenty minutes later and bloodied, I arrive at the vets with Ozzy silently pressing himself into the rear of the carrier. His philosophy seems to be: ‘If I
can’t see then, they can’t see me’. Now the situation is reversed because just you try getting him out. But eventually we do, then with the poor little bloke trembling and desperately snuggling into me he takes his medicine, after which of course he leaps back into the carrier like it’s the most desirable place on Earth. I take him home, have a quick mug of desperately needed tea liberally laced with brandy, then repeat the whole process with Woody who the Princess has thoughtfully isolated in the galeria. It’s a bit easier this time, but whereas Ozzy lapses into silence after capture, Woody is intent on giving it large vocally and breaks into the cat’s version of ‘The Ball of Inverness’, all twenty eight mucky verses. If the vet’s office was any further away, this would have me leaping from a moving vehicle in desperation, but as it is, on entering the waiting room Woody’s vocal talents have the
dogs howling; a hamster going toes up, and the charming receptionist handing in her resignation. But that’s all behind us now, at least for another year. The boys are sprawled on the back of the sofa – their favourite place - like tree leopards, and seem to have forgiven me. The tin of red salmon probably helped.
ADELTE awarded airport assistance contract SPAIN airport managers AENA has awarded a multi-million euro contract to provide support for passengers with reduced mobility. Covering Alicante-Elche, Murcia-San Javier and Almeria airports, the contract for a period of four years has been given to ADELTE – a company specialising in airport boarding - and the agreement provides for a year-by-
year extension by mutual consent up to a maximum of two further years. The contract is worth €29,152,000. ADELTE have introduced a number of technical advances to aid the AENA airport passengers, and have recently digitalised the service with the aim of being able to react quicker to the individual needs of those with
mobility issues. The awarding of the new contract followed guidelines requiring the highest quality of service to those in need, and taking it to the next level. This includes the kind of assistance offered to passengers with reduced mobility, response times, and training of the personnel on hand to treat them.
Alicante-Elche Airport attended 142,388 passengers needing assistance due to mobility issues in 2016, which was 14.3 per cent more than 2015. Figures, up to and including November 2017, show that 146,616 with special needs have already been attended to, and thus the final numbers when released will exceed the previous year.

Sitting trembling in my doctor’s waiting room recently – I’m as comfortable with medical check-ups as Trump is with Mexicans – I spotted a photograph in an old Spanish magazine that accompanied an article about folk who collect perfume bottles. It was a picture of a small blue Bakelite case from the 1940s that contained a perfume called Evening in Paris – and I was immediately projected 65 years back in time to my mother’s bedroom. On her dressing table was the identical item, one that totally fascinated me as a five-year-old, and I played with it more than with any of my toys. I gathered from the article that this reproduction of a door with hisand-her shoes outside of it is highly prized by collectors, and can sell for anything between €100 and €200 depending on its condition. After I saw the Doc, who told me I was as healthy as a horse and I would stay so if I would only cut down on my consumption of Famous Grouse whisky, I called my sister in South Africa, who cleared mum’s house after her death, and asked whether she remembered the Night in Paris box. “Sure,” she said. When I asked her whether she still had it, back came the reply: “No, it went into the trash with all her other junk.” Now back in the 1990s, when I began collecting art deco, I befriended a guy called Charlie who did house clearances for a living, and agreed that he could use my garage to store stuff he would either sell at car boot sales or take to the local recycling centre – so long as he let me pick over the items first. This way I managed to accumulate a quite valuable collection of art deco pieces ranging from Bakelite jewellery to cocktail

Charlie, at that time, couldn’t distinguish a piece of Moorcroft pottery from a sixpenny Woolworths’ vase and thought Clarice Cliff was a beauty spot in Sussex, but he was a quick learner, and this led to a partnership and, ultimately, the opening of an art deco store in Greenwich in London. One memorable day he pulled up outside my house in his big white van (well, it may have been white when Noah was nailing the last plank of his ark into place, but was now a yellowy grey) and he was smiling broadly. “Hit pay dirt”, he said. He opened the rear doors and pointed at a battered old washing machine. “You’re having a laugh. What are we going to do with that thing?” I asked. “Dump it. But first we’ll remove this.” He opened the machine and took out bundles of cash. The money, totalling just over £5,000, had been hidden by an old man who died, and his family had called Charlie to clear out the house. While relatives were having a blazing row over who should have what of their dad’s belongings, Charlie looked into the machine before hauling it out, and spotted the dosh. “But, but, but,” I spluttered. You’ve got to give that back.” He replied: “I would have done, but those people were the nastiest creatures I’d ever come across. They abused each other, coming to blows at one point, then started abusing me. They even had the cheek to say I was overcharging them to clear the premises. So, finders, keepers.” I wanted no part of it, and told Charlie he could keep the money. But the machine was only a small part of a much bigger haul. The old man had a wonderful collection of art deco crockery and several pieces of vintage Lalique glass collectively worth a whole lot more than five grand. Why did the family not keep of these items? Charlie chuckled and said: “The Philistines thought it was just trash, and told me to get it out of their sight.”

Tourism winners and losers Tourism in Greece, Germany, France and Turkey has been ravaged by the refugee crisis. These countries have endured lethal terrorist attacks that have damaged a crucial source of taxes. Off-the-beaten-path locations like Bulgaria and Croatia are raking in travel revenues. Poland and Hungary along with the Czech Republic and Slovenia are expected to benefit from an increase in tourists who before the crisis would opt for conventional destinations. More traditional tourist resorts like Spain and Portugal benefit from travellers’ aversion to afflicted countries. The Iberian Peninsula has been relatively untouched by the self-inflicted refugee crisis that plagues London, Paris and is widespread in Germany. Spain has endured dreadful attacks but dodged the refugee related violence bullet suffered by France, Germany, the Low Countries and Sweden. Hotel occupancy in Brussels plummeted to 62 per cent. Germans are playing it safe and stay at home behind locked doors. Heidelberg suffered a 40 percent drop in Far Eastern tourism and a 10 percent drop in American visits. According to Turkey’s ministry of tourism, approximately 41% less tourists visited the country compared to the same month last year. After terrorist attacks in Ankara and
Istanbul, June arrivals hit 2.5 million. In the same month last year the number was more than 4.1 million. The ministry noted a remarkable decrease of tourists from Germany and Russia. Arrivals from Germany in June fell by almost 38%, while visits from Russia dropped by 93.1%.
Russia’s security concerns for its citizens have since been met by Turkey and Egypt. High spending Russian tourists are now restoring the prosperity of resorts that once contributed greatly to each country’s tax revenues. Greek tourism has also been devastated since German Chancellor Angela Merkel notoriously flung open Europe’s doors, Greece being a transitory country. Christiana Kalogirou, regional governor of the North Aegean, told euractiv. com that the immigration crisis had seriously affected tourism in the region. The island of Lesvos suffered a 68% drop in visitors compared to 2015. According to latest data tourist arrivals to the north Aegean Sea’s islands has dropped by 70%. Mytilene’s airport services published figures show a 62.8% decrease in foreign passengers in Lesvos in July. 6,841 European tourists on 47 international flights landed on the island of Lesvos in July. In the same month last year, 18,373 people landed with 130 flights. Similarly, in the island of Chios in July 535 visits on 18 flights were recorded. Last July the number was 1,887, a 71.65% decrease.

Future of the UK State Pension. Is there one? WARNINGS that the UK State Pension pot will ‘run dry’ in 2035 have led to a number of concerned reactions. Adrian Boulding, Director of Policy at NOW: Pensions said: “The warning from the Government Actuary’s Department demonstrates just how precarious the state pension really is. “Increasing National Insurance contributions by 5 per cent could go some way to mitigate this issue. But increasing NICs is easier said than done and raises uncomfortable questions around intergenerational fairness. “To protect against an uncertain future, having workplace pension savings is essential which is where auto enrolment has the potential to make a big difference.” Those in the pensions industry think it’s not surprising that the Government Actuary Department has reached this conclusion that state pension funding levels are dwindling. The current system is dangerously unsustainable when taking into account how technology and rising life expectancy could transform the working landscape
over the next decade or two. The UK currently spends £100bn every year on the State Pension and that this is expected to double over the next 20 years and double again in the following 20 years, it is clear that the current system needs to change. Calum Cooper, Partner at Hymans Robertson said: “The chances are that our working landscape will look radically different over the next few decades. Life expectancy is continuing to rise faster than the State Pension age meaning many people will feel compelled to continue
working well into “retirement”. In fact, our own longevity analysis found that the state pension age should now be at 74, if it had kept pace with life expectancy from the Second World War. “However, all of this could be swamped if the predicted potential for technological unemployment by AI comes true. The Bank of England and PwC have estimated that 1 in 3 jobs are currently in danger from automation. Clearly there is a wide range of outcomes but this outcome would be massive and would have a devastating impact not only on NI financing but would cause demands on state support to reach an all-time high.”
Credit card charges a thing of the past HIDDEN charges for paying with a debit or credit card have been banned, helping millions of UK consumers to avoid rip-off fees when spending their hard-earned money. So-called ‘surcharging’ has become commonplace, particularly online, with many retailers hitting people with surprise charges just before they are about to make a purchase. Some retailers have been known to add charges which are far higher than it costs them to process a payment. It is estimated that surcharging cost Brits £166 million in 2015. The ban (which came into force from last Saturday) means that it will be unlawful for retailers to charge additional fees when someone uses a particular credit or debit card, or other payment systems like PayPal, to make a purchase. This will ensure consumers can be confident that there won’t be any nasty surprises, and they won’t be penalised for wanting to pay in a particular way. The new rules will be enforced by Trading Standards who will have the power to take civil enforcement action against traders who breach the regulations. It will also entitle customers to receive a refund of any unlawful surcharge they have paid and enable them, if necessary, to take legal action to recover any such surcharge. The ban on credit and debit card surcharges is effective across the EU, and will apply to all purchases made where the banks of the consumer and retailer are within the EEA. In the vast majority of other circumstances surcharges are capped at the cost to the retailer for processing the payment. The UK Government took the decision to also include other payment methods such as PayPal in the ban to further protect consumers.

health 10 ways to make your eyes “POP”
1. If you have a hard time using soft eyeliner pencils, draw a thick line onto your hand, use a stiff eye brush to pick up the pigment and then apply to your eye. 2. Need eye drops but don’t want to ruin your makeup? Breathe air in through your nose as you drop them into your eyes. Your tear ducts will suck in the drops before they have a chance to fall down your face. 3. Use a flesh coloured liner on the water rim of your lower lash line to make eyes look bigger and brighter. 4. Apply a shimmery champagne colour in the inner corner of your eyes to brighten your whole face. 5. Apply highlighter onto your brow bone. 6. Swap out your neutral black or brown liner for a brightly coloured one instead. 7. Apply concealer to your under-eye circles after foundation (not before) to better camouflage them. 8. Use eye shadow made for your eye colour. 9. To correct eye makeup mistakes or sharpen a cat eye, dip a cotton bud in eye makeup remover and erase the offending makeup. 10. To make your eye colour stand out, apply black liner around the entire eye, including the water line.
What your tongue says about Bumps, patches, and spots in your mouth can be harmless. But sometimes, they can give clues to what’s going on with your overall health. Infections, stress, medication issues, and even aging can make their marks on your tongue. Find out what your tongue is telling you and when you should see your doctor or dentist. White patches Creamy white spots could be thrush, a fungal infection (shown here). It often happens after an illness or medications throw off the balance of bacteria in your mouth. White patches that look lacy could be lichen planus, which means your immune system is attacking the tissues in your mouth. If you see hard, flat, white areas that can’t be scraped away, it could be leukoplakia, which is linked to cancer. Let your dentist know about any white patches you see. “Hair” on your tongue If your tongue has a coating that looks like black, brown, or white fur, you might have hairy tongue. Those “hairs” are proteins that turn normal, small bumps into longer strands, where food and bacteria get caught. It should
go away when you brush or scrape your tongue. If you have hairy, white patches that you can’t scrape off, it might be oral hairy leukoplakia. It can happen to people infected with viruses like Epstein-Barr or HIV. Black tongue Hairy tongue can be black in colour. But your tongue can also go dark after you take an antacid with an ingredient called bismuth. For some people, it stains the tongue black when it mixes with saliva. It’s harmless and goes away once you stop taking the medicine. Bright red tongue A strawberry-red tongue could be an early sign of Kawasaki disease, a rare, serious illness that inflames blood vessels all over the body, most often in children. It’s also a symptom of scarlet fever. If your red tongue is also smooth and you have pain in your mouth, it might be a sign that your body doesn’t have enough vitamin B3. Burning feeling If your tongue feels like you scalded it with hot coffee and tastes metallic or bitter, you may have burning mouth syndrome. It might mean a problem with the nerves in your tongue. Some health problems, like dry mouth, infections, acid reflux, and diabetes may cause it, too. For some people,
acidic foods like pineapple as well as toothpaste, mouthwash, candy, or gum also make their mouth burn. Smooth tongue A tongue without any small bumps on the top may look glossy red. You may get it if you don’t get enough of some nutrients like iron, folic acid, or B vitamins. Infections, celiac disease, or some medications can also cause it. If you have patches of smooth areas next to bumpy ones, it could be geographic tongue. The spots can come and go, and sometimes they hurt or burn. It's harmless, but it could be linked to psoriasis or lichen planus. Bumps Under the tongue is a common spot for canker sores - small, painful, reddish bumps that come and go on their own. A single, painful bump at the tip could be transient lingual papillitis, “lie bumps,” which can pop up if your tongue gets irritated. A virus can also cause lots of little bumps on the tip and sides. If you have a lump on or under your tongue that hurts and doesn’t go away, let your doctor or dentist know. They’ll want to check you for oral cancer. Soreness Your tongue has lots of nerve endings, so it can really hurt if you bite or injure it. Canker sores, lichen planus (shown here), thrush, and geographic

your health tongue can cause pain. Some medications and infections can make your tongue sore, too. Sometimes pain in your tongue can be a sign of cancer, especially if you also have a lump or red or white patches. Bring those problems up with your doctor or dentist. Macroglossia It’s when your tongue is too big compared to the rest of your mouth. It can take up so much room that your doctor might find imprints of your teeth on its sides. Your doctor will try to figure out and treat the underlying condition, which may be hypothyroidism, an infection, or allergies, among others. Fissured tongue Deep grooves can form on your tongue as you age. They also are linked to Down syndrome, psoriasis, and Sjögren's syndrome. They’re harmless, but you should gently brush your tongue to clear food and bacteria. The grooves might get better when your doctor treats the condition that’s causing them, if there is one.
Men should also be aware of breast cancer
BREAST CANCER is often thought of as something that only affects women, but men can get it in rare cases. It develops in the small amount of breast tissue men have behind their nipples. It usually occurs in men over 60, but can very occasionally affect younger men. Signs of breast cancer in men include a lump in the breast, which is usually hard, painless and doesn't move around within the breast; the nipple turning inwards (inverted nipple); fluid oozing from the nipple (nipple discharge), which may be streaked with blood; a sore or rash around the nipple that doesn't go away; the nipple or surrounding skin becoming hard, red or swollen and small bumps in the armpit (swollen glands). You should visit your doctor
if you have a lump in your breast; any other worrying symptoms, such as nipple discharge; a history of breast cancer (in men or women) in close members of your family and you're worried about your chances of getting it. It's very unlikely you have cancer, but it's best to get checked out. Your doctor will examine your breast and can refer you for tests and scans for breast cancer if needed. If you don't have symptoms but have a clear family history of breast cancer, your doctor may refer you to a genetic specialist to discuss your risk of getting it. There are some inherited genes that increase your risk of cancer and a blood test can be done to check for these. The treatment for breast cancer in men depends on how far the cancer has spread. These could include surgery to remove the affected breast tissue and nipple (mastectomy) and some of the glands in your armpit; radiotherapy; chemotherapy or a selection of other medicines that help stop breast cancer growing – including tamoxifen and trastuzumab (Herceptin). Many men have surgery followed by one or more of the other treatments which can help stop the cancer coming back in the future.

Bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with manchego cheese
Who can resist Spain’s famous Manchego cheese wrapped in Englands favourite “bacon” combined with the sweetness of a beautiful fig!
Traditionally a Spanish tapas menu item. You can also add a sprinkling of toasted breadcrumbs for a bit of extra crunch. Serve immediately or at room temperature.”
IngredientS 4 ounces Manchego cheese, cut into 24 small cubes 24 dried pitted dates 8 slices bacon, cut into thirds 24 wooden toothpicks
method Preheat oven to 200 degrees C Stuff 1 piece of Manchego cheese into each date and then wrap with 1 piece of bacon, securing with a toothpick. Arrange dates in a shallow baking dish with the bacon seam down and 2cm between pieces. Bake in a preheated oven for 5 minutes, turning dates with tongs, and continue baking until bacon is crispy for a further 5 to 6 minutes more. Drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper, and serve whilst still warm… Delicious

Home game Vistabella We’ll kick-off with football, and earlier this week the eight FAC 3rd round replays featured Chelsea-Norwich, Leicester-Fleetwood, Mansfield-Cardiff, Reading-Stevenage, Sheffield Wednesday-Carlisle, Swansea-Wolves, West Ham-Shrewsbury and Wigan-Bournemouth. A short journey for the first home game of the year on a full 18 hole course, with the new 7 holes now coming into play. The course was in very good condition but very dry and in fact when the first players teed off, the fairway was covered in frost. There was a decent turn out with it being the first game of the year, and some decent scoring considering the course has not been measured for the slope. The next away game is at Roda Golf with a 10.00am tee off on January 23. Please be at
