A FOUNDATION IN JAVEA has acquired a document from 1629 which tells the story of the coastal surveillance operations that took place in the 17th century. The manuscript was on sale by an antique dealer in the Basque Country and details the goings on between the bodies of troops stationed across six Marina Alta watchpoints. Many of the coastguards were settlers from Ibiza employed to protect the coastline from pirates. Fundacio Cirne presented the 36-page document to the public this week. The manuscript is beautifully calligraphed and is titled ‘lista de la gente de a pie que sirve en las torres del distrito de Xabea’ (‘list of the people on foot who serve in the towers of the district of Javea’). The first entry was written on September 1, 1629 and later entries span 20 years,

with the names of the coastguards and their origin. Fundacio Cirne Secretary Antoni Espinos explained that, after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, the entire Marina Alta population lived "terrified" of pirates. Inhabitants also feared an invasion from North Africa. "Javea has a steep, difficult to control coastline,” said Espinos. There were six watchpoints – the tower of San Anton, the Mesguida, the castle of Sant Marti, the tower of the Cap Prim, the tower of the Descubridor and the tower of La Branca. Only last two are still standing, but they are private and although they are declared of Cultural Interest (BIC), they cannot be visited. Fundacio Cirne President Enric Martinez said that the foundation will make the document available to historians and researchers but first, the entire manuscript will be transcribed.

START THEM YOUNG: The library runs innovative workshops both for children and adults

Once a month… by Rose Holmes BENITACHELL’S municipal library has organised a challenge for children to encourage them with their reading. ‘12 meses, 12 aventuras’ aims to inspire kids to read a book each month from the library’s wide range of titles, including ‘Geronimo Stilton’, ‘Diario de Greg’, ‘Diario de Nikki’ and ‘Les vambes vermelles’. The CEIP Santa Maria Magdalena school is taking part in the challenge, which will include a surprise for all participants as well as awards for the winning children. At the end of last year, the library was recognised for its commitment to the promotion of reading as it was awarded the National ‘Maria Moliner 2017’ Prize. Maria Moliner (30 March 1900 – 22 January 1981) was a Spanish librarian and lexicographer known for her famous Diccionario de

uso del espanol, first published in 1966–1967 The library was one of only 10 libraries in the Alicante Province to be recognised with the prize and received a grant of €1,706 towards the purchase of new books. Benitachell’s Councillor of Culture Manolo Segarra said the council was "very grateful for the recognition, that rewards the ongoing work of the library to encourage reading among all audiences, regardless of their age and cultural tastes and innovative workshops adapted to different interests.” The library has been open for 17 years and currently has 1,420 registered members – impressive given the population of Benitachell is only 4,104. It made history earlier in 2017 as it recorded its 10,000th book. The library boasts 2,794 books aimed at children and young people – evidence of its commitment to the promotion of reading from an early age.

In the top three 2016 was recently declared to have been the third driest and warmer year in the Alicante province since 1941. Only 2014 and 2015 has less rainfall and higher temperatures than last year and 2016 came a close fourth. Seven of the first eight driest and warmest years occurred after 2006, with the exception of 1994.

Can’t get enough Alfaz del Pi is fast becoming even more of a tourist hotspot as visitors lap up its rich culture and heritage. In 2017, more than 53,000 people visited the Faro de l'Albir centre and the Villa Romana Open Air Museum. The Faro de l'Albir centre opened to the public in October 2011 and it currently hosts photographic exhibitions that reflect what life was like for the old tower keepers when the lighthouse was inhabited and also demonstrates the importance of the flora and fauna of the region. The Villa Romana Open Air Museum opened to the public in March 2011 and allows visitors to virtually view all the thermal baths via an iPad app that shows the site’s original architecture. Hey, big spenders FIGURES released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) have revealed foreign visitors spent over €8 billion in the Valencian region in the first 11 months of 2017 – an increase of 15.7 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2016. The biggest spenders were the Brits, who shelled out a total €2.3 billion, followed by the French who spent €1 billion the Scandinavians who spent €832 million and the Dutch who forked out €535 million.

THE CAPITAL of the Marina Alta and the world of the Moors and Christians said goodbye to Jose Perez Tamarit - better known as 'Pepe Cascarra' – on Monday. Jose Perez passed away last Sunday at 87-years-old. He was a founding member of Denia’s fila Amiries in 1980. He became a festero that year and as an honorary member of the fila, he also served as squad leader. The current rimer Tro, Julio Quintana said Jose Perez was a “very dear and beloved person” and said: “he was always right there encouraging me.” The Federació de Moros i Cristians said he was a very participative festero and that he will be remembered for his kindness and great sense of humour. They said: “people like Jose Perez make the parties great.”

Saving the Banos de la Reina by Rose Holmes CALPE COUNCIL will hold an urgent conference next week to present a plan to save the Banos de la Reina. Four plots across the Banos de la Reina are privately owned and the council is doing all it can to prevent building on the ancient site. The Banos de la Reina is a Roman coastal enclave located at the foot of the Rock of Ifach over an area of more than 5,000 square metres. The pools dug in the coast served as hatcheries for fresh fish and the observation of the beautiful sea life: “to the people’s delight, due to this fact, the site received its name: ‘els banyets de la reina mora’, that is, the

small baths on the Moor Queen.” During the first century, the first house and the Thermae were built. After a short time, other residential complexes with services appeared in its surrounding, such as a waterwheel supplying the site with drinking water. The construction of an original church and the attached necropolis over part of the house with the circular patio proves that in the 4th-5th century, the place turned into a place of Christian worship. The Banos de la Reina stands out because of its magnificent architectural design and its rich mosaics and has been highlighted as ‘one of the most important sites in the Alicante province’.

weekend and skaters were using it to improve and practice their skills. Upon learning that the stolen railing was still at the skate park, Councillor Cristina Morera ordered engineers to retrieve it as soon as possible.

Oliva in Holland

OLIVA participated in the ‘Vakantiebeurs’ tourism and leisure fair in Holland this week. The major fair attracts exhibitors from over 1,100 destinations and welcomed more than 150,000 visitors last year – both tourism professionals and the public. Oliva is keen to promote its offering to the Dutch distribution of the municipality’s tourism by nationality consolidates the UK as the first market, followed by the Spaniards in second, the French in third and the Dutch in fourth.

Not signed, sealed or delivered A POSTMAN who was found to have more than 3,000 undelivered letters in his storeroom has been handed a twoyear suspended prison sentence. The postman had accumulated 3,272 letters over the course of 10 years from his post round in Alcoy. The public prosecutor originally called for the worker to receive a three-year sentence for not carrying out his job properly between 2004 and 2015. The postman was fired by Correos in April 2015 and later police searched his home. Officers found the undelivered letters in an adjacent storeroom and arrested him. The worker was also fined €1,800 and will be banned from working in the public sector for four years.

Elderly driver taken to hospital

A 71-YEAR-OLD German driver had to be released from his vintage Peugeot 203 after crashing into a wall near El Rancho on the Cabo La Nao road in Javea last weekend. He was taken to Denia Hospital disoriented due to a blow to the head and is thought to have had possible fractures.

Up in flames by Tahnee Wright Residents on a street in Javea were woken with a scare yesterday morning when a nearly brandnew car was set on fire. The BMW was parked outside its owners’ house on Calle Rio Mundo – a mother and daughter who, hearing a loud bang, quickly rushed out to find the

vehicle in flames. The car was completely incinerated and the fire spread to another vehicle which suffered significant damage. Firefighters attended the scene and managed to control the flames as they licked the second car, whilst also preventing a nearby hedge from catching fire. The police have not yet confirmed whether the incident is being treated as an arson attack.

BENIDORM’S municipal campaign to encourage citizens to register on the Padron was unsuccessful, meaning the city will receive less funding from the Government this year. The Costa Blanca capital launched a campaign last September to encourage citizens to register on the Padron after resident figures were reported to have dropped by over 7,000 in just four years. Farmers in Pego were given good news this week as Councillor Andreu Dominguis confirmed the groundwater reserves of water are 70 per cent full. This means that there will be enough water in the aquifers to keep crops going throughout the summer, even if there is little to no rainfall. Dominguis said January 2017’s torrential rains "were essential to fill the reserves, they were not the only ones, throughout the year there have been showers that have benefited to improve the figures." Although he hopes that 2018’s rainfall is not like last year’s because "they were torrential and in a very short space of time, as has happened on many occasions, they should be more distributed."

Dementia patient abusers on trial

THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY responsible for the reformation of the Plaza Jardinet in Gandia has claimed €147,000 from Gandia City Council in latepayment interest. The €1.7 million project was completed in 2015 under the government of Arturo Torro (PP). When the new government took over in late 2015 – a coalition between Mes Gandia and the PSPV – the construction company explained it was yet to receive any payment. A payment plan was established and the initial invoice is now paid but the company are insisting the council pays the interest given the payment was received in full nearly two years late.

Power cut leaves Denia in the dark

A POWER CUT swept across Denia on Wednesday afternoon, affecting Les Rotes, Les Marines, Calle Marques de Campo and the Plaza del Oeste. Homes were affected together with streetlamps and traffic lights. Traffic came to a standstill, causing issues and bottlenecks at various intersections. The cause of the power cut was reported to be a fire near the IES Maria Ibars school which broke out at around 5.30pm and took firefighters half an hour to extinguish. The fire caught one of the overhead power lines and threw the school and the neighbourhood into darkness.

Students in La Nucia returned to school this week and were pleasantly surprised to see various improvements. Just over €6,000 was invested in works to the municipality’s two public schools - Muixara and Sant Rafel, taking advantage of the Christmas holidays. At the San Rafael Public School – masonry, plumbing, electricity and lock-

smith work has been carried out. Improvements have been made to the ventilation system in the bathrooms. In the gym the old door has been replaced and as with all holiday periods, there has been a thorough cleaning of the playgrounds. At the Muixara School, the toilets have been repaired but most importantly, improvements have been made to the car park, with the extension of the bus parking and the felling of sev-

eral trees so that buses can manoeuvre and park more comfortably. "Again, the council took advantage of the Christmas holidays to perform improvement and maintenance activities in the two public schools of La Nucia. Once again, we demonstrate our commitment to education, with works and actions necessary for the perfect functioning of our public schools." said Sergio Villalba, La Nucia’s Councillor of Education.

Breaking news YESTERDAY’S high wind was sure to have had patio furniture flying and washing strewn across gardens, but a company in La Nucia did not expect it to break a window at their factory. Firefighters attended the factory on the Alberca industrial estate just after 11.00am and accessed the broken window. What remained of the window was cut out to avoid further damage and fortunately, nobody was hurt.

Chilean indie electropop musician Javiera Mena started her musical career in 2001 and achieved wider success after the release of her first studio album in 2006. Her musical style tends to be synthesized electronic sound, although prior to her official debut she made acoustic-oriented songs accompanied solely by guitar. Low Festival organisers have promised the tenth edition of the event will be the “biggest and best yet,” after this year’s festival gathered 83,000 people. WORKS at the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano in La Nucia began this week. The €1.186 million project - financed by the Diputacion de Alicante, the Generalitat Valenciana and La Nucia Council – will be complete next year. Works are being carried out on a 34,310 square metre plot next to the outdoor parking and include the construction of an athletics track and a football field together with improvements to the stadium and attached facilities. All the big sports cities have an athletics track and it was a facility that we lacked. It is going to be a modern and quality installation so that it can be used by both the base sports, clubs and sports schools of La Nucia, as well as top level athletes in championships or international matches.”

Hiker rescued

A 49- YEAR- OLD hiker was rescued by firefighters after falling in Les Rotes in Denia. Accompanied by her husband, the woman was trying to reach the Gerro tower but lost her footing and fell two metres, losing consciousness after hitting her head. Her husband called emergency services and she regained consciousness as firefighters carried her the 300 metres to a waiting ambulance. Although slightly shocked, the woman did not need medical attention.

Half a million ‘wasted’

BENIDORM CITY COUNCIL has faced criticism over three buildings which it spent hundreds of thousands of euros restoring, which are now either not in use or being demolished. Between 2010 and 2015, the council spent nearly €500,000 refurbishing public spaces such as the

Vivero de Empresas in the old Leonor Canalejas houses, an office on Calle Limones and a cultural space in the old Telefonica building on Calle Mercat. The Vivero de Empresas is being demolished after it was only in operation for just over a year and and the other two are not in use.

Scam vendors given a telling off ONE PERSON has been ordered to pay a fine and another three have been warned for selling food and drink in Benidorm on Christmas Eve. Spanish media reports claim the group sold food and drink to people in the

street without having the necessary vending permits. This kind of criminal activity is a regular occurence in Spain across celebrations and fiestas – especially in Valencia when Las Fallas takes place.

Ibiza bound drug dealer on trial A MAN who tried to travel on the ferry from Denia to Ibiza with more than €4,000 worth of drugs on him went on trial this week. The Public Prosecutor has called for five years in prison and a €1,500 fine for the man, who was caught in August 2015 at the Balearia port with 50 grams of cannabis resin and 12.2 grams of amphetamines. The man is believed to have been attempting to travel to the island to sell the drugs to partygoers.

Javea is preparing to celebrate its San Antonio and San Sebastia fiestas this month. Councillor Antoni Miragall presented the programme of events this week, beginning with San Antonio which will take place this weekend January 13 – 14. Among the scheduled activities include the cremà del pi on Saturday at 8.00pm and the blessing of the ani-

mals on Sunday at 1.00pm, followed by the pilgrimage to Calle San Antonio to take the saint to the hornacina. The municipality will celebrate its patron saint San Sebastia next weekend Friday 19 – Sunday 21. Among the scheduled activities includes a bullfighting programme – inaugurating the Alicante province bullfighting season – as well as a discomovil on the Friday and Saturday nights. Mass will be held on the Saturday night at 8.00pm and the San Sebastia

monument will be paraded around the town on the Sunday from 10.00am. Presenting the programme of events, Miragall spoke of his "satisfaction for the involvement of the associations and the fiesta commission to offer Javea a full festival program to which everyone is invited. These parties are very special for us because of their important roots and because they allow us to start the year by strengthening our ties with our neighbours and friends."

A new play area has been built in the centre of Moraira. The space comprises two playgrounds for kids with a big pergola in the centre. The new play area is located between Avenida Madrid and Calle Barranquet. It was a high priority for Teulada-Moraira council. The plot is private and it was necessary for the municipality to negotiate a temporary right of use in order to be allowed to turn it into a recreation area with playground and rest area with pergola, tables and benches to accommodate families. Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares and Councillor Raul Llobell visited the space and highlighted the importance of such installations in the centre of the municipality, whilst promising to continue on their mission to improve quality of life for Teulada-Moraira residents. “We don´t want to miss mentioning that the installations have all the necessary security measures and that the pergola will be totally covered during the summer months to avoid solar radiation and to offer a shady area for everybody to enjoy, “ Mayor Linares added.

Teulada-Moraira’s Sant Antoni festivities will take place across this weekend and next weekend, including the blessing of the animals and the traditional bonfire. This weekend, the events will take place in Moraira and will start with the decoration organised by the theatre group El Portitxolet and other collaborators on the Church Square tonight (Fri-

day) at 8.00pm. Tomorrow (Saturday) starts with the preparation of the Sant Antoni bonfire at noon and at 6:30pm dinner will be served on the Church Square as well as a workshop for fiesta decoration for kids and youngsters. At 8.00pm the parade of the giant demon starts at the castle followed by another parade lead by the ‘farolillos’ and San Anton´s giant. They will march from the fish market to the Church Square. At 9:30pm the blessing and the bonfire will be followed by a BBQ. Sunday starts with the wake-up call and at 10:30am a parade to the church where mass will be held in honour of Sant Antoni. At 11:30am animals and carriages meet on the Plaza Les Sorts and the parade will end at the church where the blessing of the animals will take place.

The fiesta ends with dinner organised by the Fiesta Committee Virgen de los Desamparados Moraira 2018 and at the end of the day the housewife association of Moraira will offer hot chocolate. Next weekend Thursday 19 – Sunday 21 the festivities will continue in Teulada, organised by the Colla El Falco and the Parroquia Santa Caterina Teulada. On Thursday 18, the programme starts with the inauguration of a photo exhibition in the ‘Ecomuseografic’ organised by the Fotoclub l’Andrago, ‘Un sexenni de Sibil.la’. On Friday 19, the book ‘Desafiant el destí’ will be presented at the municipal library in Teulada at 8.00pm.

Saturday 20 starts with the ‘Entrada del pi i cercavila dels dimonis de Sant Antoni’ in collaboration with the municipality´s theatre school and the Alejandro Morell association accompanied by the band Colla El Falco. The bells will then chime for the bonfire dinner on the Plaza dels Porxes and ‘Soca en Arrel’ will perform from 4.00pm. On Sunday 21, horses and carriages will meet on the Avenida Santa Catalina and on the town hall square and the parade including the portrait of San Antoni will end at the Ermita de Sant Vicent where the blessing of the animals will take place and where the traditional ‘Rollos’ will be distributed. Councillor Rosana Caselles thanked all the organisers for the great job they are doing and invites everybody to participate in this great event.

Ryanair has introduced new reduced checked bag fees (and increased check-in bag sizes) to encourage more customers to check in bags and reduce the number of customers with two bags at the boarding gates. As too many customers were taking advantage of Ryanair’s improved two free

carry-on bags service, and with high load factors (95 per cent in December) there is not enough overhead cabin space for this volume of carry-on bags, which is causing boarding/flight delays. To encourage more customers to check-in some bags and reduce the volume of carry-on bags, Ryanair has introduced bag policy changes on all flights as follows: 1. In sombre mood Russia reflects on the centenary of a coup that presaged a bloodbath that claimed the lives of up to 70 million martyrs. There’s hardly a village library let alone city museum that isn’t marking the tragedy that in 1917 befell Imperial Russia. Before the seizure Russians accounted for 8 percent of the world population; today it is 2 percent. In Russia were listed 54,174 Christian churches, 25,593 chapels, 1,025 monasteries, military churches and cemetery chapels. By 1987 only 6,893 churches and 15 monasteries remained. Many times Bolshevism could have been nipped in the bud but to its eternal shame the political elite and corporate dynasties of the West profited enormously from the coup. Lenin said, “Without big banks socialism would be impossible”. He was likely referring to the $20 million ($416 million now) New York based bank Kuhn, Loeb & Co invested in the ‘revolution’. By 1922 the dust had settled. Thanks to Western collaboration Imperial Russia was now in the hands of insurgents with little political but much criminal experience. Western corporations were quick to take advantage of Imperial Russia’s vast resources. The nation’s gold reserves, the largest in the world, disappeared

into the bank vaults of the West. The entire Gulag system and Stalin’s 5-Year Plans, in which it is estimated 40 million slaves perished, were made possible and accessible by western banks and corporations. Those in on the kill included Ford, Amtorg Trading Corporation, General Electric, RCA, International Harvester Tractors, Caterpillar; in all over 100 U.S. corporations profiting from Stalin’s slave empire. “This Soviet Russia toils perpetually along on the arm of the capitalist States. She took from them her workers, her engineers, her machines: she drew everything from the capitalists’ states. Communists were surviving only on the non-communist institutions of the world.” The harvesting of human martyrs continued its cruel course. Then, when Bolshevism to all intents and purposes was routed in December 1941 it was rescued by Roosevelt’s Lend Lease rescue package. British aid to preserve Bolshevism likely cost its Far Eastern territories which were left unprotected. In February 1945 Soviet tyrant Joe Stalin added his signature to those of Roosevelt and Churchill’s on the Yalta Agreement. To Bolshevism was surrendered the lion’s share of plunder including 21 European nations. Ironically, they included Poland for whose territo-

rial integrity the war was begun. The spoils of war were divided between the Allies. These included 10 million captive slaves; by 1946 there wasn’t even a bicycle to be found in Germany. Tens of thousands of ransacked trains

and trucks were used to transport millions of new slaves from transferred territories. The silence in the West is deafening. Is this because they want the ground left undisturbed?

Where’s all the fan mail? by

Back in 2008, changes were made to the postal address system here in the Southern Costa Blanca. We were informed that by adding a certain key element, it would simplify things for Correos and that moreover, if our mail did not carry this modified address, then there was a possibility that it would not be delivered. In other words, destroyed. I always say: ‘If it aint broke, don’t fix it’ and having worked for Royal Mail, I could not for the life of me see how, by adding another street name and area number ahead of our regular address, it could possibly improve things. A major flaw was that whilst many properties were covered by the new postal address, the actual mail boxes often carried a different one. Confusing surely for the delivery staff. However, the cartero’s appeared to possess more common sense than the authorities, and continued to deliver the mail to our regular boxes, whether or not it carried the new prefix. I was back in the UK shortly after the change over, so I took the new details of the revised Spanish address to our Building Society, who duly changed the information on the computer in my presence. Then after returning to Spain, we received written confirmation that the Building Society records had been

changed accordingly. Great. Two days later we received another confirmation – an exact duplicate of the first - followed by yet another a few days after that. In total we received five identical letters of confirmation and get this: all carrying the old address. Was it any wonder the banking system had all but collapsed I remember thinking. But crucially, all were delivered to our original address without any problem. By and large, the postal service in the meantime has been quite satisfactory, that is until this past Christmas. Two weeks before the big day, we had received just one of the many cards we normally receive from our friends around the world. On taking delivery of a parcel one day, we asked our charming cartero, Eva, about this and were told that the instruction was to make parcels a priority and to ignore letters and cards until they had been cleared. Cards began to dribble through shortly after, but now in the second week of January we are without at least a score of cards that we know for a fact were sent. Many of our friends and neighbours have the same complaint and if this applies to others in the Orihuela Costa area, it begs the question: where is all the missing mail?

Red Cross wish list for pyjamas and slippers On Three Kings every child deserves to know the magic that it brings, and with grateful thanks to Candy Wright (Help Denia and Marina Alta). The Red Cross Children were able to receive a gift from the Three Kings.

The Red Cross of Javea, Gata and Pedreguer have over 93 children whose families are on the food bank and live below the poverty line. Every year for the past four years there has been an appeal to raise money to buy a gift for

these children. In the past, the Red Cross has only managed to raise enough for one gift per child. However, this year, Help Denia responded to a plea from the Red Cross to try and get these children warm pyjamas and slippers.

For the first year since the appeal has been running, the children had a gift of pyjamas and slippers from the Three Kings. The Red Cross would like to give heartfelt thanks to Help Denia for their generosity on behalf of the children.

We are now continuing our quest to learn how to talk about the recent past in Spanish, and a few other things besides, by forming the past participle of verbs. There are actually quite a few things to say about all of this which will take a few articles. Whilst the picture is still incomplete you will probably have all sorts of questions, but if you wait you may well find them answered as we go along. So for today we will just talk about the formation of the past participle and give a few examples at the end of the sorts of sentences we are aiming at so that you’re not left completely in the dark. We saw last week that in the case of regular verbs, that is most of them, we take the two letter endings off our infinitive verbs and make a simple change with them. The –ar ending becomes – ado; and the –er and –ir endings become – ido. This gives us, for example: to speak -“hablar”, spoken - “hablado”; to drink – “beber”, drunk - “be-

bido”; to sleep “dormir”, slept - “dormido”. Now this is very simple indeed, but there are a few irregular verbs as well to think about. Happily they are very common, so we tend to get to know them quite quickly. Here are some of them: Abrir (to open) abierto (opened) Escribir (to write) escrito (written) Decir (to say/to tell) dicho (said/told) Hacer (to make/to do) hecho (made/done) Morir (to die) muerto (died) Ver (to see/to watch) visto (seen/watched) Volver (to return) vuelto (returned) I feel I can go no further without giving you actual examples of how these things are used, on the understanding that more will be explained next time, particularly regarding the translation of “have” and “has” in these sentences.

Here we go: He hablado con mi vecino. I have spoken to my neighbour. Has escrito una carta. You have written a letter. Ha dormido bien. He has slept well. Before next week, practise forming some more past participles. Here are some verbs we have already learnt to get you started. They are all regular so you should do them in a jiffy: Trabajar, cocinar, bailar, aprender, comer, firmar, visitar, tener, comprar, conducir, ir, cambiar.

Can I keep my ISA & Premium Bonds if I’m a Spanish resident? by

The short answer to this is 'yes'. It is a question I get asked regularly and whilst the answer to this question is yes, the answer to 'Should I keep them?' would be different as ISA’s and Premium bonds (in fact the majority of NS&I products) are more hassle than they are worth when you leave the UK. Around two years ago, I met with a potential client who had been living in Spain for over 6 years. While living in the UK they had a financial adviser who had rightly maximised their annual ISA allowance meaning they were able to invest their savings tax free, and in addition to this they also had a modest amount of Premium Bonds. The first thing I pointed out to the client is that NS&I (National Savings and Investments), are a state-owned savings bank in the UK and whilst you can keep these products open should you move overseas, you cannot pay into them and they no longer offer any tax benefits. This means that a £25 premium bond win or a 0.5% annual gain would mean a costly trip to your Spanish accountant to declare the gains. To make matters worse, the Premium Bond prize pot has recently been reduced

to a paltry 1.25% of the total holdings, with each £1 invested having a 30,000 to 1 chance of winning that minimum prize of £25. Over the last two years she received just 0.5% from her ISA and two £25 prizes, all of which she had to declare to the Spanish tax authorities. She also had to put them on her overseas asset declaration, the Modelo 720. Her accountancy fees during that period were over six times her gains. Since the introduction of Common Reporting Standards, risking not declaring these gains is out of the question, as these would’ve been automatically reported to the Spanish tax authorities. During that meeting two years ago I had recommended to that potential client that we set up an investment plan designed for Spanish residents – this one happened to be offered by The Prudential, a company very well known among British expats, although this is just one of several options available. Over the last two years the plan I recommended, which would’ve blendedtwo funds, the Prufund Cautious and Growth, would’ve returned over 10% after ALL fees. This is a very good return and results such as this will vary, but as these are fully compliant and legally recognized products for Spanish residents, her accountancy bill would’ve been zero.

It is different from the rest of European countries as far as legal and registering aspects are concerned. The differences are less accentuated with southern countries (France, Belgium, Italy, etc) than with AngloSaxon countries (Great Britain) or Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden and Denmark). In Spain, all matters relating to purchase and sale contracts (concept, rights and obligations of both purchaser and seller, contract effects, etc.) are regulated by the Civil Law and in particular by the Civil Code. Napoleon’s French Civil Code of 1804 provided the inspiration for Spain’s Civil Code. Napoleon’s Code, which in turn is influenced by Roman Law has also provided the inspiration for other current European civil codes (Belgium, Italy, etc.). In the Spanish contractual system, any agreements, clauses and conditions considered to be relevant by the parties can be freely established in the contracts. However, despite the contractual freedom existing in the Spanish legal system, all agreements, clauses and conditions must obligatory comply with some rules and principles. Thus, the contractual freedom is limited by these rules and principles.

Purchase and sale contracts are governed by articles 1445 to 1537 of Spain’s Civil Code. These articles establish the purchase and sale concept, who are entitled to purchase and sell, the obligations of both purchaser and seller and the causes of contract resolution. Some of these articles must obligatory be enforced while other are not obligatory. In this latter case, the parties can freely establish the agreements and clauses of the contract, according to their wish. Purchase and sale contracts can be made either in writing or verbally (article 1278 of Spanish Civil Code). However, it is advisable to make them in writing, particularly if the object of the purchase and sale is a property. Purchase and sale contracts are fully valid between the contracting parties and their heirs, provided that the following requirements are fulfilled: - Consent of the contracting parties - Object of the contract - Purpose of the contract, where the actions to be performed by the parties are described. Seller: delivery of the object and its detailed description. Purchaser: payment of the price including detailed amount Finally, all contracts entered into by the parties either in writing or verbally can be notarised and become public

title deeds through their signing in the presence of a notary public. Both purchaser and seller are entitled to have their private purchase and sale contract notarised. The main difference between a private contract and a public title deed is that the public title deed has direct access to the Registry of Properties and, once registered, the name of the owner will be recorded and his or her right with respect to the property will then be protected not only against the seller but also against any third party who might claim rights upon the property. Prior to signing any private contract of purchase and sale with a promoter or individual, it is very convenient to appoint a professional (Lawyer) who will be able to check the content of the contract and give legal advice to the purchaser. Thus, the lawyer will verify if the contract meets all the essential requirements to be valid, that is, if an accurate description of the object of the purchase and sale is included and will inform the purchaser. Likewise, he will ensure that the method of payment is adequate and that the penalty clauses imposed on the parties for breach of contract are fair for both parties (for instance, if the penalty for delay

in a payment is fair compared to that imposed on the seller for delay in the delivery of the property). It is very important to do a legal checkup of the property before you buy. With regard to new-built properties, it is very important to verify if the builder is the owner of the plot of land upon which the property object of the contract is being or is to be built. In this case, the lawyer must also verify if said builder has obtained the building licence and the extension of such licence. Finally, it has to be taken into account that the builder can be obliged to take on insurance or provide bank guarantees for any monies paid by the purchaser in respect of the property price. Thus, in the event that the building works do not start, are never completed or are not completed by the agreed delivery date, the purchaser will be guaranteed the refund of any sums paid. Once the lawyer has ensured that the contract complies with all the abovementioned guarantees, it can be signed and the payments made, according to what has been agreed. Finally, at the same time or after the final payment is made, the purchaser will be entitled to formally complete the purchase by signing the public title deeds before a Notary Public.

What is the NIE number and do I need one if I am staying in Spain? The NIE number (Número de identificación de Extranjeros), is the abbreviation given for the Identification Number for Foreigners. Spanish bank considers move to London A SPANISH INVESTMENT BANK is considering moving its headquarters from Madrid to London as it believes the UK capital will remain the centre of European business and finance even post-Brexit.

Alantra Partners oversees €3.7 billion of assets and employs 350 people across 21 countries. Two insiders at the bank told Bloomberg it is considering how many people to send to London. Alantra Partners’ move to London would buck the trend as financial-services firms look to move staff from London to Europe over fears Brexit will see the UK lose passporting rights that allow for goods and services to be traded freely throughout the union. Bank of America, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs and are all said to be preparing for a move to the continent in case the UK exits the EU without a trade deal.

PM estimates a 3.1 per cent economic growth last year

THE SPANISH PRIME MINISTER said on Tuesday that the domestic economy grew at a rate of 3.1 per cent in 2017. "Spain closed 2017 with an estimated growth of 3.1 per cent," said Mariano Rajoy in a speech at the Spain Investors Day forum in Madrid. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) will publish the official growth data for the fourth quarter and 2017 as a whole on January 30th. Rajoy also pointed out that the government expects a medium-term growth rate of 2.5 per cent until 2020. In the short-term, the government expects the domestic economy to grow at a rate of 2.3 per cent this year, a forecast that could increase as the situation in Catalonia stabilises. If, after last month’s elections, a government is formed soon in Catalonia "that obeys the constitutional order... the growth can be much higher than the current forecasts, probably similar to last year’s figures", said Rajoy. World Day of Prayer The World Day of Prayer is celebrated annually in over 170 countries on the first Friday in March. 1 (16oz) package egg noodles, 1 pound lean ground beef, 1 (0.75oz) packet dry brown gravy mix, 1 (8oz) package cream cheese, 1 (6oz) can chopped mushrooms, with liquid, 1/2 cup milk, 1 (8oz) container sour cream, 2 (10.75oz) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup

Method

1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add egg noodles and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.

clubs & charities U3A Vall del Pop: Reflexology and its benefits To conclude the U3A Vall del Pop’s General Meeting on last Thursday, Tobias Laube gave a talk on Reflexology, what it is and its benefits Despite technical difficulties preventing the projector from working to allow Tobias to show some videos, his excellent and impassioned talk kept the members interest and generated several specific questions. Reflexology has a history of some 4,000 years, with wall paintings in the pyramids showing people being given foot reflexology. The modern practice of foot reflexology has been around for 50 years and Tobias has been practicing the skills for four years. Foot reflexology looks like massage, but the treatment affects the interior of the body and is focused on ‘reflex points’, which connect to the body’s nervous systems. The treatment is structured to increase the blood supply and

thus provide more oxygen to the point of the pain/injury. After some initial years of skepticism, Tobias said the improved oxygen supply after reflexology treatment has now been proven scientifically. Foot reflexology can show beneficial results in the treatment of heart attacks, strokes, paralysis, sciatica, migraine, multiple sclerosis, other aches and pains, and even showing benefits in recovering from jet-lag. €20,000 donated in 2017 The Charity Shop of Calpe donated €20,000 over the course of 2017 to a wide range of local organisations in the town. Christmas and New Year is a time when the need for donations is at its greatest and the shop was able to respond once again. John Bridge -President of the shop- presented vouchers allowing local families to buy fresh food over the festive period. €1,000 worth of vouchers were donated to Cáritas along with a further €1,000 to the Calpe Food Bank. Volunteers at the shop celebrated their successful year with a lunch in a local Calpe restaurant, where John thanked them for all their hard work during 2017. John also expressed his thanks to all the shop´s customers and wished them a very Happy New Year.

EVERY year, around 17,450 people in England are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer. Around 7,600 people die from bladder or kidney cancer in England each year. Both cancers affect men and women, although they are more common in men. Most people diagnosed with these cancers are over 50. Those who have worked in manufacturing jobs that involved the use of rubber, dyes, textiles, plastics or certain other chemicals are more prone to developing bladder cancer. Smokers have a much higher risk of bladder and kidney cancer. People on kidney dialysis are more at risk of developing kidney cancer. If you notice any blood in your pee, even if it is just once, tell your doctor straight away. The chances are it’s nothing serious, but these cancers are more treatable if they are found early. Blood in your pee is a key symptom for both types of cancer, and other bladder cancer symptoms to look out for include pain when urinating. Other kidney cancer symptoms include a pain in the side, below the ribs, that doesn’t go away, weight loss and, as with bladder cancer symptoms, if you notice blood in your pee, even if it’s ‘just the once’, tell your doctor. You’re not wasting anyone’s time by getting your symptoms checked out and, if it’s not serious, your mind will be put at rest. But if it is a condition such as bladder or kidney cancer, early detection makes it easier to treat. Seeing your doctor early could save your life. Ear mites in cats What are ear mites? Ear mites are a fairly common parasite in both cats and dogs. The mites are microscopic and infectious organisms which are like tiny white dots in appearance, but can barely be seen with the naked eye. Detection under a microscope is normally required to confirm their presence. Ear mites live on the skin of the ear canal and feed off ear wax and skin oils. An adult normally lives for approximately two months, but can multiply quickly with eggs taking just four days to hatch and a further three weeks to develop into an adult mite ready to breed. Without visiting the vet, many owners are unaware that their cat is suffering from a bacterial or yeast ear infection; this can lead to weeks of inappropriate treatment and the condition worsening.

How do cats catch ear mites? Ear mites transfer between animals – or ‘hosts’ – through close physical contact. Are ear mites contagious to other pets? Yes, ear mites are contagious to other cats and dogs in the household. Even if other pets aren’t showing symptoms of ear mites, it’s essential that they are also treated at the same time. Cats are the most prone to catching ear mites due to their lifestyle habits. Can humans catch ear mites from pets? Only in extremely rare cases, cat owners have been known to develop skin rashes if their pet has ear mites. The ear mites that infect cats are different from the parasite affecting humans. What treatment is there for ear mites? Many spot on flea treatments also prevent and treat ear mites, and if recommended by your vet - this is by far and away the easiest way to protect

your pet from the parasites. One or two applications is usually enough and they are a lot less stressful for your pet – and for you – than ear drops. Although spot on treatments are the most popular form of treatment, ear drops are also available. Some of these require at least three weeks of treatment as the medication cannot kill the eggs of the parasites, which take 21 days to develop into adult mites. If using these treatments, it’s therefore crucial that you use them, as prescribed, for the recommended time period. Other topical treatments only need to be used for 10 to 14 days and are much stronger, so kill the eggs as well as the adult mites and include medication to tackle the infection caused by the parasites. Always consult your vet on the best and most suitable treatment to use.

Nissan Navara takes on the gruelling Dakar Rally “DREAM… DARE… LIVE IT” is the official motto of the worldfamous Dakar Rally – and that’s exactly what one man and his Nissan Navara are currently experiencing. Mindaugas Plukys has bought the pickup, found sponsors to help him modify it and shipped it across the Atlantic Ocean to the start line in Lima, Peru. Timing for this ‘trip of a lifetime’ expedition could not be more perfect for Mindaugas. As the gruelling Dakar Rally celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2018, he will be doing the same thing later in the year. Mindaugas commented: “There is something about the Dakar Rally which has always inspired me, and this adventure has been five years in the planning. I always said I’d do it before my 40th birthday, so getting to South America in January 2018 has been my goal.” Mindaugas lives in Vilnius, Lithuania, and works for Nissan as part of the communications team in the Baltic region. It means the ‘tough and smart’ Nissan Navara was always going to be the vehicle to make his dream come true. The vehicle is a Double Cab model, powered by a 2.3-litre 160PS diesel engine linked to a six-speed manual

transmission. Finished in Flame Red, the ride height has been raised 4cm with an Old Man Emu suspension system. Nissan side bars and a rear bumper bar have been added to improve styling and durability, while a Rival underbody protection system has also been fitted. Normally there is a prize for guessing correctly the length of the Captain's New Year Drive but as Roger Brown had forgotten to bring the markers and paperwork, no winning prize was available. The format was a team accumulator and the results were as follows: First team with 110 points was Simon Fox, Keith Price, Elizabeth Grin and a mysterious Ghost. Second team with 109 points was Colin Foster, Graham Borley, Ken Millar and Celia Cronin. Third team with 103 points was Andrew Harrison, our new Captain Dave Phillips, Martin Gates and John Nicol.

Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Simon Fox, 1m20cm and on hole 16 was Andrew Harrison with 1m.32cm, both unfortunately missing their 2''s. There were two 2's today, Stella Fox who is on a roll at the moment and Graham Haslam. As Graham did not enter the 2's competition all the prize money went to Stella.
