British Empire Medals awarded for ‘outstanding dedication’ HER MAJESTY’S Ambassador to Spain has presented British Empire Medals (BEM) to two British residents in Alicante. The honours were part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours List announced during June this year and the proud recipients were Sylvia Tatnell and Annette English. Sylvia Tatnell, resident in Teulada-Moraira, has been awarded the BEM for her services to British residents and the wider community in Alicante, where she was a local councillor for 25 years and Head of Social Services. Mrs Tatnell also supports local charities in the area to help the most vulnerable residents. She said: “I am overwhelmed with this. I decided to go into politics twenty five years ago, because I felt I could be of help to fellow British residents in Spain. I am deeply honoured to have received this award, which is a fantastic encouragement to continue assisting people in need” The other recipient, Annette English from Alicante

Snowploughs on the way by Ray Chadwick THANKS to the help and assistance from central government, the Murcia region has been promised enough resources and equipment to enable them to cope with winter weather conditions. As part of the 2017 / 2018 Winter Road Plan, thirteen snow ploughs and 375,000 litres of brine will be available to take care of the region’s roads over the next few months. Government delegate, Francisco Bernabé, and the Minister of the Presidency and Development, Pedro Rivera presented the plans that will guarantee safe conditions on the 578 kilometres of State controlled roads and the other 3,000 kilometres of highways in Murcia. Facilities exist in the Murcia region to
store 240,000 litres of brine and 1,000 tons of salt, and also allow for the quick deployment of 230 members of the traffic division of the Guardia Civil and 110 other municipal workers. During the same period last year, 3,612 kilometres of roads was covered using 292,833 litres of brine and 320 tons of salt. “Working together for all eventualities and emergencies is our priority. We are prepared,” said Bernabé. Common salt has traditionally been used as an anti-icing treatment on roads but in recent years that has slowly been replaced by brine – very concentrated solutions of salt – which ‘stick’ to the road surface better and doesn’t get thrown up and around by passing traffic as salt would and thus lose its effectiveness.

New equipment makes drug detection easier LOCAL Police based in Torrevieja have begun using a special kit at a number of checkpoints to measure levels of drugs taken by drivers. The specialist equipment comprises of a device for checking the levels of both alcohol and drugs, kits for collecting samples that can be sent off for analysis, and a fridge for keeping the evidence in such a way as to not affect the condition of the samples that may be used in bringing offenders to justice. The machines can detect the presence of all kinds of drugs - hashish, cocaine, heroin, modern ‘designer drugs’ (amphetamines, methamphetamines) and general medication – and according to the law, only officers that have been on a training course are able to carry out the tests. So far, 10 have completed the course and a further six will be undertaking it soon. Before being tested for drugs, drivers will at first be breathalysed as is the normal practice; fines for driving with drugs in the system can be up to €1,000 although the main aims and objectives of the tests is to guarantee road safety
and prevent accidents. The new tests will feature two phases. The first will see a cotton bud placed into the mouth until a sufficient amount of saliva is obtained. The swab is then put into the testing device and will produce a result after six minutes. A positive test then leads on to phase two. This consists of a second saliva sample
with a special swab called Quantisal that is sent on to the official laboratory. Analysis there will give the final result and the actual amount of narcotics discovered in the driver’s system. Authorities in Torrevieja have announced that there will be increased checks for both alcohol and drugs over the Christmas period.

Suspected nine car robber caught
TWO MEN and one woman were injured when two vehicles collided on the N-340, close to the exit at Cox. The front-on collision happened between a BMW and a Ford and two occupants in one of the car were uninjured. The three people taken to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela needed to be cut free from their car by firefighters in an operation that is understood to have taken more than three hours.
Local police trained to spot illegal foreign cars GUARDAMAR del Segura has organised a course to train local police officers in the detection of fake or expired documents being carried by owners of foreign cars in Spain. Councillor Ana Martinez explained that the objective is to discover irregularities in MOT
certificates, insurance documents, log books and payment of taxes. The course for the 30 police officers lasts for three days and they will be shown official documents from a number of countries to recognise exactly what foreign vehicles should be carrying.

Homeless people to be moved into housing projects by Steve Collins MORE than 200 volunteers have toured the streets of Alicante to learn about the reality of homelessness in the city. The initiative was carried out with collaboration of several organisations that form a network of aid to the group REAPSHA and part of an overall European campaign to raise awareness of the problem.
Part of the reason for the study is to find those who will be the first to enter 10 new housing projects aimed at the homeless and most vulnerable in society. The information that has been collected thanks to the volunteers over the course of two days and nights will affect the future measures taken to improve the lives of those most affected, and to completely eradicated homelessness by 2020.
A council spokesperson said: “We are working on having 10 houses in Alicante city for the homeless and is a new programme that will complement the work we do with local reception centres.” The houses, located throughout the city, will soon be inhabited by some of the most vulnerable homeless people, particularly those with mental health issues, alcohol or drug addictions, and have spent more than a year living rough in the streets.
CREVILLENTE city council has asked the central government ministry responsible for roads to improve the layout of the N-340 as it enters their municipality. The calls come following a fatal accident at that point in May this year and requests that the section between the Moscardó petrol station and Mercadonna where people make illegal left turns
is subject to more control. Crevillente is asking for barriers to be erected along that stretch of the road to make it impossible for drivers to carry out illegal manoeuvres. At present those that turn across the centre line are taking a risk as there are two bends in the road that limit both the visibility of and reaction time to oncoming traffic.
Alleged wife-beater arrested LOCAL Police based in Murcia have arrested a 39-yearold man accused of alleged gender violence when he insulted, threatened and then beat his wife in the house in the district of Beniaján that, until a few months ago, shared with her. According to police sources, children were present when the abuse took place and the couple were at the time going through separation procedures.
Dog rescued from drain A VERY lucky dog has been reunited with its owner after being rescued by firefighters in Orihuela. Emergency services received a 112 call from concerned locals on Tuesday morning after hearing what they thought was a
dog barking...but inside a drainpipe! Their worries were proved right as when the fire service arrived they were able to find a dog trapped at least five metres down and unable to get out due to the bends in the drain.

White House asks for more details of her case. by Staff Reporter TASHA LYNCH is a one in a million girl. Not only is she suffering from one of the world’s rarest conditions, she spends most of her free time thinking of others – when not needing regular or emergency hospital treatment – contacting and encouraging people, many of whom are complete strangers, not to give up with their debilitating and life threatening conditions. As her devoted father Andy told RTN: “Even though she can be very poorly in a hospital bed, she feels as though she’s taking up a space that someone else can use.” Tasha, now 24-years-old, was struck down by four separate life threatening conditions and her father, with the help of the local community has been supporting the ‘Tasha Appeal’ for some time. Through a series of fund raising events taking place up and down the Costa Blanca and a dedicated internet site, Andy Lynch is desperately trying to raise a total
of over €200,000 to get his daughter to the USA for specialist treatment for her rare mitochondrial disease. “It’s a ridiculously rare condition that Tasha has”, said Andy, “and is more or less the same condition as the young baby Charlie Gard suffered from who tragically lost his fight for life this summer.” The case of baby Charlie made the world news, and those fighting for Tasha are hoping for similar awareness of her illness, especially as The White House has taken notice of a Tweet sent to President Donald Trump and have asked for details of her case. However, the fund raising has become top priority for Andy and Tasha as her condition is deteriorating quickly and if Andy doesn’t raise the money soon, her condition will be too far gone to be reversed. Tasha isn’t eligible for UK benefits as she is not a UK resident. She has applied for help from the Spanish Social Security Department and has been waiting for two years for a definitive answer. While it is hoped her official situa-
tion can be resolved, the fund raising must continue. The disease has struck Tasha in such a devastating way that she is currently paralysed from the waist down, unable to breathe unaided and relies on a ventilator and tracheotomy, 24 hours a day. She is unable to swallow, and is fed through a tube. Blind in her left eye and light sensitive in her right eye, Tasha is even unable to support her own head unaided. Fund raising has being coordinated by the Orihuela Costa Community Care Association who, as Andy said, are “doing a fantastic job” on his and Tasha’s behalf and have also made contact with politicians in both Spain and the UK. A number of dedicated fund raising events are being held leading up to Christmas, and you can read full details of them in next week’s RTN.

‘Underground city’ discovered by radar AN underground city is believed to have been discovered in Santa Pola. The find was made thanks to the latest in 3D radar technology that investigated the street market area of the municipality close to the cemetery and the settlement could date back to any-
where between the 1st and 5th century. It was found by the members of the Geodetection Unit of Historical Heritage of the University of Cádiz and the Department of Archeology of the University of Alicante (UA) when they scanned the area with the 3D radar.

Neighbourhood Watch welcomes its new president
Targeted work opportunities...but only for six months BETWEEN now and December 20, the municipality of Orihuela will be hiring 45 new members of staff; a mixture of the over 30s and the long-term unemployed. Following two subsidies from SERVEF totalling €515,000, the hiring of a number of people can get underway. The jobs needing to be filled include administrative officers and assistants, cleaning staff, caretakers, locksmiths, electricians, plumbers and various other technicians, particularly
those that have specialism in agriculture. Employment Councillor in Orihuela, Victor Valverde, explained that it will be the SERVEF employment service that will carry out these contracts and source the people required to fill the posts from their database. Therefore it’s very important that people registered have an updated profile on the SERVEF system. Those taken on to fill the positions available will only be on a six month contract from December 20.
City aiming to catch fishermen of the future
AN initiative has been set up in Cartagena to encourage more people to consider a future in the local fishing industry. This will involve a series of visits and tours. Patron of the Cartagena Fishermen’s Association, Bartolomé Navarro, said about the project that, “it’s about citizens being able to see at first-hand how people work at sea, watching the catches being unloaded and how the selling process functions. There will also be opportunities to taste some of the fish too.” The original idea of such tours, to also include some of the ancient sites of Cartagena, was first put forward some years ago.

VIGILANCE: Neighbourhood Watch welcomes Torrevieja officials
by Lynn Whittaker THE urbanisations of San Luis, La Siesta and El Chaparral have a new Neighbourhood Watch president. In his first official act, Doug Allen chaired a meeting of residents that was attended by Torrevieja’s Councillor for International Residents, Carmen Morate, the Director of the Overseas Residents office, Carlos González, and a representative of the local police.
The new president informed all the residents of the rights and obligations of the members of Neighbourhood Watch, particularly the need to alert the correct authorities should they experience or witness any issues on their urbanisations. Councillor Carmen Morate said that one of the principle concerns of the residents was the growing bad practice of those that dump their garden cuttings and other large items in and around the
general rubbish containers. The group also agreed on greater coordination in reporting those that are breaking the law, not just with rubbish and recycling issues but with vehicle offences, and without putting themselves at risk. The next meeting of the Neighbourhood Watch will be on Monday January 29 at 4.30pm, held at the Casa Ventura, San Luis.

‘Drunk driver’ let off

by Lynn Whittaker A MAN has been acquitted on a charge of drunk driving even though he was drunk and in control of his car. The man was let off by the judge because when he was drunk he was only planning to move his car...at the request of the police. The man was originally convicted for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol back in January 2017 in Murcia; but the man appealed against the sentence which saw him fined €6 a day for a period of eight months – approximately €1,500 – and banned from driving for 18 months. The incident began when the car belonging to the acquitted man was found parked in a disabled parking bay in Plaza Condestable in the city centre of Murcia and without an official per-

A local policeman then saw the driver and asked him to remove his car... and as soon as he did the police officer noticed the man showing signs of being drunk – a combination of the way, he walked, talked and smelt – and pro-
ceeded to give the man two breath tests which he failed. The man was let off because there was no evidence that he was actually drunk when driving his car before he was asked to move his vehicle parked illegally by the police.
Five years prison sought in captive case
A TRIAL is underway at the Provincial Court in Alicante in which six people are accused of holding a man against his will. The man was held in his home in Torrevieja for 13 days back in 2016; three of the six on trial are also accused of attacking their captive. The original incident
that has led to the trial happened during last year when the victim allowed two of the accused – a man and a woman – to live with him in his house on a temporary arrangement. However, the arrangement didn’t work out and after a few days the man told them they had to pack up and
leave; but they refused and responded by holding him captive in one of the rooms. In total, he had to endure 13 days and was continually guarded by the couple and even one of the other accused took turns. All three of them allegedly hit the victim on a number of occasions
where, among other injuries he suffered a broken rib. Prosecutors are asking for a prison sentence of five years for each of the accused for the crime of illegal detention and an extra 18 months for three of the accused for the physical injuries they caused.
OFFICERS of the National Police in Elche have arrested a man for stealing chocolate and ham from a supermarket. It’s understood that the man lives on the street, without any documentation, and simply took the packets and bars of food to eat for himself. He was apprehended by the police during a routine patrol in Calle Mallorca, in the Altabix area of the city, when their attention was caught by a man hiding among parked cars. He was asked for ID but failed to produce any and during a frisking the police found several packets of Serrano ham and a bar of chocolate...some of which had already been eaten. The man, who allegedly is without any home or money, immediately admitted that he’d stolen the products from a nearby supermarket. Police then visited the store where it was confirmed that the man detained had been in the supermarket earlier had left without going through the checkouts. After checking via the bar codes that the products did actually belong to the store, the police requested a price ticket to confirm the value of the shoplifted products...€24.34. Some of the packets of ham could be returned as they were unopened so the actual value of the stolen goods was less. However, due the man having a criminal record for other minor robberies in the past, he was arrested and will be brought in front of the courts. Such cases usually attract a fine of €60. If the accused can prove that he’s insolvent and does indeed live on the street, he could escape a fine. So far, the supermarket concerned hasn’t registered a complaint for the stolen items, and so it will be down to the court to decide whether what was stolen was for consumption or would be sold on for financial gain given his personal circumstances.

Drugs gang dismantled
FOUR people have been arrested following an operation to dismantle an alleged drug selling gang in Alicante. Officers were aware of the same place in the northern part of Alicante being used to sell the illegal substances – in this case cocaine – and they set up an operation to monitor the area. They managed to seize 250 grams of cocaine on this occasion which was a continuation of a previous exercise in which two kilos of the narcotic was discovered. The operation began following an investigation that began in August when the first two kilos were found and this led police to a similar network of distribution and selling. Eventually, they were able to link both operations and were able to firstly identify and then locate every member of the organisation. Homes were raided during a planned operation which culminated in the arrest of the four gang members who are aged between 26 and 47-years-old.

UNDETERRED: Car park will be used as before
Car park ‘attendant’ violence by Steve Collins A WOMAN from Murcia has suffered a number of violent threats at the hands of an opportunist car park attendant. Many people have suffered a similar experience over many years. People drive into a number of large, free parking spaces and are often shown into a space by someone who then expects to be paid for their help. But they are not officials and only do what they do as a form of begging. However, one woman has had a particularly nasty experience which she shared through social media recently with one of the ‘attendants’ in the city. “I go and park in the same car park every week when I go to visit my parents and I never give them any money. Sometimes they say something to me, but last time it got out of hand,” she said.
As she pointed out on Facebook: “I was threatened by this man when I was inside my car, then began to hit the car, swearing at me and trying to force me out of the car. He knows me from previous visits that I’ve never previously yielded to his verbal threats and also knows that he won’t get a single cent out of me.” The woman pointed out that she called the police who arrived some 15 minutes later. In the meantime, she had told the ‘attendant’ that she’d recorded him at which he got scared and fled the scene. Police soon identified him as being well-known to them...however, as they informed the woman, there is nothing they can do as no law is being broken. She says that she will continue to park in the same place and will not be intimidated. “Until the authorities receive several complaints and the courts issue a restraining order or a by-law is put into place, this situation will not be resolved.”
Man dies instantly from fifth floor fall A 55-YEAR-OLD man has died after falling from a fifth-floor building in Murcia. Emergency services were called to the scene at the Cabezo Cortado industrial estate where the victim was working on the Disco Pub. Prison sentences sought for bank fraudsters PROSECUTORS at the Provincial Court in La Manga have asked for prison sentences of five years for six people accused of defrauding English people who were looking to buy property in La Manga. Two bank employees and four others have been accused of the misappropriation of €17,000,000 intended to be used as loans for the purchase and reformation of houses. There were 327 mortgage loans affected; in addition there was €1,000,000 connected with 99 personal loans. All the alleged offences took place between 2005 and 2007.

Animal by-laws overwhelmingly approved ALMORADÍ City Counc� cil has passed a resolution with the approval off all councillors to draft a new by-law to end the putting down of animals that come under their responsibility and care. The regulation is intended to update the one that has been in force since 1998. It will also regulate the control and sterilisation of cat coloc
nies and how abandoned animals are collected and subsequently homed and protected. It also intends to limit the number of anic mals permitted to be kept in private homes and to sanction owners that allow their pets to continually stay on patios and balcoc nies. STORE: Location of most of the stolen goods recovered
by Glenn Scott OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have apprehended two people accused of a number of robberies from farms. The detained were arrested in Almoradi and Orihuela and suspected of being behind nine crimes of robbery with force and driving infringements. The case that stands out the most is of the
12 stolen piglets found in one of the cars that were stopped during the investigations. The two men are 25 and 30-years-old, and the 25-year-old was also charged with driving the vehicles involved in the robberies, without a licence, and not having any identification documents. He has already been sent to prison. During investigations, the Guardia Civil
noticed a similar pattern for the robberies which saw them locating targets during the day, and after stealing a vehicle moments beforehand carried out the thefts at night. Once inside the farm premises, they stole mainly agricultural machinery, tools, copper wiring and oil drums...and on one occasion 12 piglets weighing 20 kilos each. The value of the stolen goods amounted to more than €7,500.

Cruise forum highlights passenger growth CARTAGENA has hosted the ‘2017 Cruise Forum’ which has highlighted the growth of the numbers of cruise passengers to the city. More than 200 professionals connected to the cruise and tourism sector were in attendance. Passenger arrivals have grown by 20 per cent of the past two years alone and since 2008 have increased from 35,000 annually to the current level of 230,000. Director of the Port Authority, Antonio Sevilla, was the driving force behind this conference and in his speech indicated that, “the port of Cartagena is a fundamental part of the Murcia region’s infrastructure that benefits the citizens enormously, and its development has a great social and economic impact.” Last year cruise passengers accounted for almost 19 per cent of foreign tourism that arrived in the region. A total of 187,000 tourists from the 120 cruises that docked in Cartagena included mainly British (50 per cent) and Americans (25%). These were followed by the Germans, Italians and French, and such has been the growth of tour-

Do the belly, belly shake! JUST recently, a group of up to 20 ladies who attend the Torrevieja U3A Group took part in a six-week taster course to learn about the ancient art of Egyptian and Turkish Belly Dancing. The course was a great success, so much so, that another course is expected to be run in the early part of the New Year. Belly dancing, despite Hollywood’s efforts to portray the subject as entertainment for men, was apparently never intended to be performed for the pleasure of the male population but was intended to simply be a beneficial and safe form of exercise for ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes. Do you have a skill or pastime that you feel you could demonstrate and would be of interest to others? In which case you’ll be more than welcome to come along and present those talents to the U3A membership. It can be a one-off experience or a short or long term course. ON CHARGE: Up to €20,000 towards electric vehicles
PEOPLE living in the Murcia region will be able to qualify for a grant for up to €20,000 towards the purchase of electric vehicles. The initiative has come from central government but the plan is for both regional and local authorities to add to the amount of subsidy that will come into force over the next few days. Deputy spokesman of the Partido Popular (PP) in the Congress of Deputies, Theodore Garcia, said the approval of the MOVALT Plan, “...is an opportunity that helps accelerate the expansion of sustainable, alternative and efficient mobility. Residents in Murcia can receive up to €20,000 in aid for the purpose of buying an electric vehicle.”

The objective of the plan is to increase the fleet of vehicles powered by alternative forms of energy and thus reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other polluting gases. “This will also reduce the dependence on oil for Spain as a whole and the region in particular,” said Garcia. Once the initiative is published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE), €20 million will be allocated and will range between €500 and €18,000 depending on the category of the vehicle purchased. On top of this state aid, the regional community and the local council can increase the subsidy and also develop the number of recharging points, which is estimated to cost €15 million.

TOP BAKE: Will Alicante bakery be given their day?

The Better Pan Bakery, run by Ramón Maciá and located in the Plaza Alcalde Agatángelo Soler on the Gran Vía, is the only Alicante bakery included in the Ruta Española del Buen Pan 2017 (Spanish route of good bread), an initiative organisations looking at the quality of bread. An overall total of 83 bakeries from across Spain have been designated as being the best in the country, and among them are six in the Valencian Community of which three are
in the city of Valencai, one in Castellón and the Better Pan Bakery in Alicante. Six months ago, those behind the list decided to start touring around Spain to find the locations of the best bakeries in the country. They visited them one by one accompanied by some the top professionals in the sector and carried out a series of ‘anonymous’ tastings. More than 400 bakeries were visited and the final list of 83 was whittled down from an original line up of the best 150. The winners will be announced soon and the top 80 on the list had to be expanded to include those bakeries that emerged from the tests with the same score.

by Glenn Scott TWENTY TWO members of the SAMM Cruising and Independent Group enjoyed the social side to their activities recently at their autumn lunch get together. This year it was held at Asador Los Naranjos in Pilar de la Horadada and organised by group coordinator Heather Bell. What, you may ask, is the Cruising and Independent Group? It’s a section within SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, comprising the owners of larger yachts and power boats who offer opportunities to other SAMM members to get out onto the water as their crew and those SAMM members who are not in one of the various boat-share groups. The larger boats vary in size from 10 to 12 meters and are moored in various marinas along the Costa Calida. In addition to regular day sails in their local vicinity, group boats also often go on longer trips along the Spanish coast or to the Balearic Islands, either singly or in company with other boats in the group as each owner’s time permits.
Group enjoying their Autumn get together Non-sailors are welcome as crew and are encouraged to help manage the boat and take the helm to enhance their experience but, if they just want to chill out as passengers that’s OK too. Everybody can also enjoy the many activities organised by the SAMM social

LAST Saturday, Santa Claus was in town at the fantastic Christmas Fair at the Age Concern centre in La Siesta. He was ably assisted by all his little helpers, those being the faithful volunteers who manned the stalls selling Christmas gifts, jewellery, clothes, bric-a brac, tombola and much, much more. Everyone enjoyed a welcome cup of tea and a mince pie for just €1. One of the highlights of the morning was the raffle being drawn and the lucky winner won a threeday trip for two to Valencia. Although the weather was a little dull and overcast, more than 300 people turned out and got straight into the Christmas spirit and went away with an enormous spring in their step. The Christmas Fair raised an incredible €2,717 which will go towards maintaining all the services Age Concern are renowned for, which is helping people of all nationalities over the age of 50. President Maureen Payne said that she was highly delighted that so many people came along and donated so much money which will be wisely used, as always. Car Insurance – Points Recovery Course Spanish points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. If no traffic offences are committed after 3 years drivers receive an additional 3 points. A point is awarded every subsequent 3-year period up to a maximum of 15 points. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a reeducation course of 12 hours or a 24 hour course if drivers have lost all their points. Once the course is passed successfully drivers are awarded 8 points on their licence.
How are points deducted? Drivers will lose 6 points if under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other illegal substances. Reckless driving, refusing to take a breathalysing test or drugs test, driving over 50% of the speed limit. And drivers will lose 4 points for putting other drivers at risk, throwing objects on the road that could cause accidents or fire, exceeding limits by over 40kph, endangering cyclists, illegally parking, exceeding maximum passenger capacity by 50%. Driving without a seat belt, using a mobile phone and not keeping a safe driving distance will result in a 3 point fine.
What is covered? Under Línea Directa’s Traffic Fine Handling service, the policy holder or owner of the insured vehicle as well as any other drivers legally entitled to drive the vehicle can benefit up to a maximum of €500 of the cost of traffic re-education and awareness course, as well as the fees payable in connection with the driving licence recovery test.

The way I see it… Mind clinic Part Two Our bus arrived outside a nondescript long low red brick building, that I have named Stallag 1V. Morning mist clung to the ground, my breath forms a frozen cloud as it mingled with the chilled air. The three of us were walked single file by our driver into the building, greeted by our minders. Claire is the head honcho, then Thelma and Michelle, all were official in their appearance, however with a friendly attitude. We were sat in comfortable arm chairs and given tea or coffee and biscuits, this was not what I expected from Stallag 1V. Thelma produced a black board in which we were asked searching questions. What day of the week is it? The date? The weather? And what year is it? Next, we sang a song, Side by Side, later it was to be, It’s A Long Way To Tipperary. Next a simple card game. Then when prompted we had to look at a world map and tell our minders where we were born. In

In 3 months, I will see the consultant again, the results of that last scan, showed that I will likely have Alzheimer’s/ Dementia/ Lewy bodies, (Lewy bodies is a form of Parkinson’s decease), why likely? The write way up Everyone has a book inside them and sadly this is where it usually stays. As Richard Bach says, ‘a professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.’ Writing a book is a challenge but by way of letters and emails most people have already written enough to complete several paperbacks. As with learning any new skill there’s a formula for success. Using advice given or learned I added my name to over 40 book titles and I have ghosted as many more. Your typing finger is simply a spare tongue so let your finger do the talking. Most wannabe authors are deterred by their inability to write to retail standards. But, poor writing never discouraged successful authors like Jeffrey Archer or Stephen King. Their storyline inspirations are simply handed to a ghost writer who writes their book. Most books are brought to publishing standards by a ghost-writer rather than the person named on the book’s cover. Many well-known authors lend their names to the works of lesser known authors. These include Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Clive Cussler. Clancy’s publishers say: “Tom Clancy creates the ideas for these series and the writers execute Clancy’s ideas. All are subject to his supervision.” It helps if the writer has experience of the subject. It is not unknown for hoteliers, social workers, those employed in the sex industry, policemen and entertainers to make more money selling their life story than living it.
Biographies don’t sell but romance and erotica; dubbed mummy porn clears the shelves. The soft porn market generates $1.44 billion each year; most buyers are women. Hot on the heels of erotica are crime novels but with sales at $728 million crime is unlikely to close the thigh gap. Mills and Boon shrugged off its maiden aunt image by adding Cherish and Dare Romance books which are much more sexually explicit. These are described by the publishers as erotically charged and irresistibly passionate. Size is important: The word count for romantic novels is 50,000 whilst the average paperback is likely to consist of 70 to 80k words. A sticking point for many new authors is embarrassment but if a penname is used who knows? Will you make the Rich List? It’s a lottery but ‘if you’re not in you can’t win’. Certainly, being a published author is financially viable; a 10-day cruise would cost more than the ghostwriting and publishing fees but royalties recover some or all of one’s outlay. These tend to be 10 to 15 per cent of the cover price, which are paid direct into one’s bank account.

The framed posters of numerous pantomimes decorating our stairwell are a reminder as December approaches, of Christmases past and the plethora of special memories that they trigger. Early on in our panto adventures, our sound engineer had devised a system of mini microphones in sequence that could be positioned across the apron of the stage, and up and over the proscenium arch in order to distribute the sound more evenly throughout the auditorium. Everything seemed fine at our technical rehearsal, but the real test would come later when the theatre was packed with people. The only adjustment the actors needed to make was to wear soft soled shoes such was the sensitivity of the apron mics. What with audience participation and much adlibbing, our panto prompt had her work cut out; it was almost impossible to know when to intervene with an appropriate line. The rule therefore was to look meaningfully at the prompt if the actor needed to get out of a tight spot. Opening night. I was aware that the Dame standing beside me on stage had forgotten ‘her’ next crucial line and moreover had not remembered the prompt rule. In panic ‘she’ muttered desperately in my ear: ‘I’ve forgotten the f^@*<?# line!’ at which point the audience fell out of their seats with shock and laughter. The words had reverberated around the hall with perfect clarity, confirming that the system worked beautifully. In later years we reserved the opening night for an audience of special needs children and their carers. It was provided free, and in addition every kid re-

A Bury St Edmunds firm laid on free coaches with the drivers donating their time, and to make it a complete evening all the children were first taken to McDonald’s to get them in the party spirit. On one occasion as the first half was coming to an end, a small boy leapt to his feet and berated one of our actors with language that would have embarrassed a Liverpool docker.
As director I was trying to placate the actor in question during the interval when I was informed that a lady was at the stage door asking to speak to me. She was the carer of the offending boy, who it transpired suffered with Tourette’s syndrome and in his case the meatier the language the more he was enjoying himself. I passed this information on to the relieved actor, who bounded on to the stage in the second half fervently hoping for more verbal abuse.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

We are making progress with those wonderful things called verbs, and if you have been following these articles from the beginning you will now have a few of them under your belt. Without explaining all the ramifications, we have looked at the present tense of a number of verbs and their infinitives. To explain this differently in terms of one verb (hablar), this is what we now know about it so far: Hablar = to speak (infinitive) Hablo = I speak (first person singular) Hablas = you speak (second person singular) Habla = he or she speaks, or you speak, more polite (third person singular) Hablamos = we speak (first person plural) Hablan = they speak (third person plural). Whatever you’ve understood of all of that is good! For those of you who are already familiar with verb conjugation in Spanish, you will be aware that I have so far omitted one form which is the second person plural – in this case habláis. There is no particular reason for omitting this and we will include it of course once we go into more details about the present tense later on. It is a form which does not have any resonances in English, since we do not have a plu-
ral version of “you”. That makes it hard to translate, and we end up with “you two”, “you folks” “you lot” and so on. However, we will look into all of that in more detail later on. We’re now going to look at another form which is even simpler than all of the above. Sticking for now with the verb hablar, the word in question is hablando which means “speaking.” The proper grammar name for this form of a verb is a “gerund”, also referred to as the “present participle”, and it is broadly the equivalent of the “…ing” form in English. However, we need to be careful as it isn’t used nearly so much in Spanish as the “…ing” forms are in English. Nevertheless is quite a common type of word and also very useful and also (this is the best bit) extremely easy to work out! We have mentioned before that all verbs can be divided into two parts – the root and the ending. Continuing with hablar – if we remove the ending – ar we are left with the root, which is therefore habl- This process is a very important one as we will need to do it for all verbs all the time, whatever else we do with them in future articles. Now hablar is a verb that ends in – ar, and therefore follows the same simple rule as all – ar verbs, which is to change the – ar to – ando, giving us habl-ando,

BBVA flogs real estate to U.S. fund SPAIN’S second largest bank BBVA said on Wednesday it has agreed to sell 80 per cent of its real estate business to U.S. fund Cerberus for €4 billion, showing how investor enthusiasm for Spanish property is reviving. The burst property bubble in 2008 sent the country into a downturn that lasted nearly five years, causing mass unemployment and prompting a morethan 40-billion-euro bailout for the country’s banks. Spanish economy returned to growth in 2013 and has outperformed the rest
of Europe since then, helping to revive residential construction as house prices pick up, which has started to attract foreign investors back into the market. The BBVA real estate assets included in the deal have a gross book value of some €13 billion, the bank said in a statement. BBVA said the whole portfolio was valued at €5 billion, with the price
involving a discount of 61.5 per cent, in line with its coverage ratio for its foreclosed assets. The deal is the largest since Santander sold control of property worth €30 billion to U.S. investor Blackstone Group in August. Santander sold its portfolio at a net value of €10 billion after a discount of around 66 per cent.

ECB’s new VP will ‘probably’ be Spanish
THE EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK (ECB)’s vicepresident position, currently held by Vitor Constancio who has until May next year to stand down, will probably go to a Spanish candidate, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said in comments published in the Spanish press on Tuesday. Spain has not held a position on the ECB’s executive board since 2012 after the exit of Jose Manuel Gonzalez Paramo. “I’m convinced that the position will go to Spain,” de Guindos said. The ECB’s executive board is charged with implementing monetary policy for the 19 member states that use the euro and consists of the president, vice president and four board members. All executive board members are appointed for an eight-year term that cannot be renewed. De Guindos also dismissed rumours that he was a candidate for the position of Eurogroup head, currently held by Jeroen Dijsselbloem. De Guindos has been considered in Brussels political circles as one of the main candidates to head up Eurogroup - an informal body where the ministers of the euro area member states discuss matters relating to their shared responsibilities related to the euro.

It’s Christmas show time for Footwork Dance TO ROUND off the year, the students of Los Montesinos based Footwork Dance, will be presenting their new exciting Christmas show ‘Kaleidoscope’ at the Casa de Cultura y Musica in Los Montesinos on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 December at 7.30pm. As in previous years, proceeds from the show will go to help the under privileged of Los Montesinos. This is the 10th anniversary dance show and is bound to be a Christmas cracker, giving the students of all ages an opportunity to showcase their skills. The show will be full of colourful costumes, new routines along with some favourites, fantastic music and exciting production. What better way can there be to start the Christmas festivities? This year has been a very successful year for Footwork Dance, with students obtaining high marks in external exams, the introduction of Darcey Bussell’s DDmix dance sessions, the opening of a second studio in Cabo Roig, and of course not forgetting the fantastic summer show . It is because of the response from the audience after the summer show and a demand for tickets, that the Christmas show dates have been increased to two performances so not to disappoint anyone. Joy to the world THE popular Cantabile Ladies Choir will be performing on two occasions over the next couple of weeks. Presenting their Christmas concert – ‘Joy To The World’ – the first is today (Friday December 1) at the Centro Rural de Algorfa (The Old Railway Station) in Urbanisation Montebello, Algorfa beginning at 6pm. The second concert will be on Thursday December 14 at 3pm at the
Los Balcones Church, Torrevieja. Entrance to both concerts is free but there will be a voluntary collection at the end. Many of the Carols may be unfamiliar, but nevertheless all full of melody and a change from the traditional offerings at this time of the year. The hard-working members of the Cantabile Ladies Choir look forward to your support.

Zinc - An important trace element Zinc is an essential trace element fulfilling many functions in the human organism. It is an important building block in the metabolic process and the natural immunity system. Zinc is necessary for the proper function of over 200 enzymes, is involved in the release of neurotransmitter substances and plays a central role in cell division. Zinc deficiency can manifest itself in different ways, for example in eczema, healing problems in open wounds, memory problems, low immunity, hair loss, irregularities in the nails, caries, stomach diseases and nervous problems. Investigations confirm that, especially in the elderly, zinc deficiency is often encountered. The daily intake of zinc in this age group lies between 7 and 11 mg, which is clearly too low: recommended is an intake of 15 mg a day. A multitude of causes for widespread zinc deficiency exists. Some of them are: insufficient intake of zinc through an inadequate diet, a lowered ability to absorb zinc or an increased rate at which zinc is lost, caused by illnesses that occur more frequently in
the elderly. Zinc can be helpful in many ways: In combination with vitamin A, zinc is an important building block for the function of the eye retina. Recent studies confirm the positive effect of zinc for age-related visual impairments caused by retinal detachment (Maculadegeneration). Even diabetics benefit from an increased Zinc supply. Diabetics excrete more zinc via urine than non-diabetics. This can lead to a zinc deficiency and increases the risk of visual problems or poor wound healing. Moreover, the zinc contributes to the insulin function and it protects insulin from oxidation. Zinc is essential for the immune system and contributes to the inhibition of harmful viruses activity. Maintain a healthy weight and diet. Being overweight by just a few kilos can lead to snoring. Fatty tissue around your neck squeezes the airway and prevents air flowing in and out freely. 2. Try to sleep on your side rather than your back. While sleeping on your back, your tongue, chin and any excess fatty tissue under your chin can relax and squash your airway. Sleeping on your side prevents this. 3. Avoid alcohol before going to bed. Alcohol makes your muscles relax more than usual during a normal night's sleep.
This may encourage the back of your throat to collapse as you breathe, which causes snoring. 4. Quit or cut down on smoking. Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of your nose and throat, causing swelling and catarrh. This means airflow is decreased and you're more likely to snore. 5. Keep your nose clear, so that you breathe in through your nose rather than your mouth. If an allergy is blocking your nose, try antihistamine tablets or a nasal spray. food & drink Vegan eggnog Nothing says Christmas like eggnog! RTN’s vegan version uses dates, cashews and apricots, plus almond milk and brandy to reinvent this classic festive tipple.
INGREDIENTS
25g pitted dates, 25g cashew nuts, 25g dried apricots ¼ tsp mixed spice, 100ml brandy, 1 vanilla pod, seeds only, 1l sweetened almond milk, ice, to serve, nutmeg, to serve
method
Soak the dates, cashews, apricots and mixed spice in the brandy overnight. The next day, tip the mixture into a blender and add the seeds from the vanilla pod and the almond milk. Blitz until smooth, then pour into eight tall glasses (use a sieve, if you like) with ice and grate some nutmeg on top. PREP: 15 MINS (plus overnight soaking) SERVES 8

1. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment and preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3/350ºF. 2. Combine the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves and pepper in a food processor and, with the motor on, add the butter and sugar, then, slowly, the beaten eggs and runny honey, though don’t use all of this liquid if the pastry has come together before it’s used up. 3. Form 2 fat discs and put one, covered in clingfilm or in a freezer bag, in the fridge while you get started on the other.

4. Then dust a work surface with flour, roll out the disc, also floured, to about 5mm / ¼ inch and cut out your Christmas decorations with cutters of your choice, which could include fir-tree shapes, angels, stars, snowflakes, and so on. 5. Re-roll and cut out some more, setting aside the residue from this first disc, well covered, while you get on with rolling out the second. When you’ve got both sets of leftover clumps of dough, roll out and cut out again, and keep doing so till all the dough’s used up. 6. Now take a small icing nozzle and
use the pointy end to cut out a hole just below the top of each biscuit (through which ribbon can later be threaded). 7. Arrange the pastry shapes on the lined baking sheets and cook for about 20 minutes: it’s hard to see when they’re cooked, but you can feel; if the underside is no longer doughy, they’re ready. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool. 8. Make up the instant royal icing, beating it until it’s thick enough to be able to cover the biscuits with a justdripping blanket of white; but don’t beat it for as long as the packet says

4 cups whole milk 2 cups half-and-half 1/2 cup dulce de leche 2 cinnamon sticks 10 oz. 70 per cent dark chocolate 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1/2 cups bourbon

or you’ll have icing so thick it will need to be spread with a spatula and you won’t get such a neat outline. 9. Carefully ice the cold decorations, using a teaspoon (the tip for dripping, the back for smoothing), and scatter sparkles or sprinkles as you like. When
the icing is set, thread ribbon through the holes and hang on your tree. MAKE AHEAD TIP: Make the biscuits up to 1 week ahead and store in an airtight container. Ice the biscuits the day before needed to allow them
plenty of time to set. FREEZE AHEAD TIP: The raw cookie dough can be made and frozen for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge overnight. The cooked biscuits can be made and frozen in sealable bags for up to 6 months.
Mulled wine brownies Bake a festive take on classic brownies. Using red wine and spices like cinnamon and ginger lifts the flavour and fills the home with the aromas of Christmas.
INGREDIENTS
100g dark chocolate 150g unsalted butter 200g light brown muscovado sugar 1 large egg and 1 egg yolk 100ml red wine 50g cocoa powder 100g plain flour Pinch of nutmeg and ground cloves ¼ tsp each cinnamon and ginger
method 1. Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4, butter and line the base of a 20cm x 20cm brownie tin with parchment paper. Melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water. 2. Mix the flour and cocoa powder together with the spices and a pinch of salt - set aside. Using an electric whisk, beat the butter and sugar together until super light and fluffy then whisk in the egg and yolk. 3. Pour in melted chocolate, wine and flour mixture and whisk until just combined. 4. Pour the batter into tin and bake for 15 mins until just set, don’t worry if there is a slight wobble in the centre, it will set up as they cool. Put into the fridge to firm up.

Whisk together milk, half-and-half, dulce de leche, and cinnamon sticks in a large saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 10 minutes. Return mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Gradually whisk in finely chopped 70 percent dark chocolate, whisking until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in pure vanilla extract, kosher salt, and bourbon, if desired. Discard cinnamon sticks. Serve warm.

RTN talks you through how to make this eye-catching, carnivorous bog planter in four simple steps. Start With: • Clear container with no drainage or lid (a glass vase would be perfect!) • Pebbles for drainage • Horticultural charcoal • Sand • Peat moss or carnivorous plant blend soil • Carnivorous plants • Distilled water Use organic products when possible to avoid chemical additives. You can find these supplies at most nurseries, hydroponic stores, or hardware stores that sell orchids. Recommended Plants: • Bladderworts • Australian pitcher plants • Butterworts • North American pitcher plants • Venus flytrap • Sundew STEP 1: Place pebbles and charcoal in bottom of large glass container. STEP 2: Add a layer of sand and soil. STEP 3: Add the carnivorous plants. STEP 4: Layer with decorative moss, bark or pebbles for the finishing touches.
A venus flytrap eats live food so no need for water How to Take Care of Your Carnivorous Bog Planter • Keep soil moist but not too soggy — a great way to check is to make sure the soil is always a dark brown color. You can fill the container so that you see a little bit of water in between the pebbles at the base, then water again once that water gets used up. • Use distilled water whenever possible — regular tap water contains additives such as chlorine which are hard for the plants to process. • Carnivorous plants need bright, direct light during summer (ideally from a south- or west-facing window).
• In their winter dormancy, give them low, indirect light (November through February). • Make sure there is no lid on your container or it will have a hot car green house effect and kill the plants. • Keep away from radiator in the winter. • Clip off any dead leaves. • Expect to repot every year with a new plant as the old plants outgrow the container. Feeding Directions Carnivorous Plants DO NOT REQUIRE feeding. They get their energy from photosynthesis like any other plant, so all they need to
survive is light and water. However, insect carnivory serves as their version of using fertilizer. So you don't need to feed your plant, but if you do, follow these tips: • Venus Flytraps consume live food. The movement of a live insect inside a closed trap tells the plant that it has captured prey rather than debris. • First, catch a live insect. The prey should be no more than 2/3 the length of the trap. • Optional: Place the insect in a small, closed sandwich bag and place the bag in the refrigerator or freezer long enough for the insect to stop moving/pass out from the cold, but not long enough to kill it. • Grasp the insect with tweezers. Brush it back and forth along the inner surface of the trap and its trigger hairs until it closes. Then release your hold on the insect and pull your tweezers gently out of the closed trap. • The insect will warm up and move around inside the trap, causing it to gradually close tighter. The trap leaf will digest the insect and re-open about a week later, leaving behind the insect's shell. Removing the shell is optional. • Sundews can be fed either live or dead caught insects, freeze-dried bloodworms or small fish food flakes. Small crickets may also be used, but if alive, their legs and arms should be removed to prevent escape. Place the food directly on the tentacled leaf surface. Feed one to two leaves of the sundew every week or two. You can also place them in an area with a lot of fruit flies if you notice them in your kitchen.

UK NEW car production increased in October, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 157,056 units left UK factories last month, a 3.5 per cent rise compared with the same period in 2016. The growth was driven by exports, which rose 5.0 per cent in the month, boosted by demand for new models in overseas markets. 82.1 per cent of all UK-built cars were shipped abroad in October – the highest proportion this year – with the bulk going to our biggest trading partner, Europe. Meanwhile, production for the UK continued to reverse, falling 2.9 per cent and making October the ninth month of decline at home this year. 28,178 cars were produced for domestic buyers, as lower business and consumer confidence, combined with confusion over government policies towards diesel, continued to dent orders. Yearto-date figures show production for the home market decreased by 6.8 per cent or almost 22,000 units. Exports have fared better, broadly stable so far in the year at 0.1 per cent, while overall output is down 1.6 per cent. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “It’s encouraging to see positive growth in exports this month and a slight increase in overall output.

Changes to the UK driving test A NUMBER of British people in Spain often return to their homeland in order to pass their driving test. As from next Monday December 4, they will notice a few changes to the test that include some different manoeuvres and some tech based enhancements. The changes are designed to make sure new drivers have the skills they’ll need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving, and will only apply to cars to begin with. 1. The independent driving part of the test where you drive without instructions from the examiner will increase from 10 minutes to 20 minutes...roughly half the duration of the entire test.
2. During the independent driving part of the test, most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a sat nav. The examiner will provide the sat nav (a TomTom Start 52) and set it up. You won’t need to set the route - the examiner will do this for you. So, it doesn’t matter what make or model of sat nav you practise with. You can’t follow directions from your own sat nav during the test - you have to use the one supplied by the examiner. You’ll be able to ask the examiner for confirmation of where you’re going if you’re not sure. It won’t matter if you go the wrong way unless you make a fault while doing it. One in five driving tests won’t use a sat nav. You’ll need to

PASS OR FAIL: No more reversing around a corner follow traffic signs instead. 3. Reversing manoeuvres will be changed. The ‘reverse around a corner’ and ‘turn-in-the-road’ manoeuvres will no longer be tested, but you should still be taught them by your instructor. b) Park in a bay - either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do) c) Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for two car lengths and rejoin the traffic 4. During the test, you’ll be asked two vehicle safety questions, known as the ‘show
me, tell me’ questions. You’ll be asked the ‘tell me’ question (where you explain how you’d carry out a safety task) at the start of your test, before you start driving and then the ‘show me’ question (where you show how you’d carry out a safety task) while you’re driving - for example, showing how to wash the windscreen using the car controls and wipers.

OFF WE SAIL: The start of the final race for 2017 THE FINAL race day of the SAMM Autumn Series 2017 attracted a good turnout of competitors and nine boats came to the start of the first race; five single handers and four with crews of two or more. Due to a timing error by the race officials the boats had to be recalled and re-started, the first time this has happened in many years. Unfortunately the SW four to five knot early wind gradually faded to virtually nothing and the uneventful race, so uneventful that it looked as if one competitor had fallen asleep, had to be shortened to just two laps, which some boats took nearly two hours to complete. By the time the 10 boats started the second race at 2.30pm the wind had gone to the forecast Easterly at five knots with some
gusts a little stronger. As in previous weeks the lead was being contested by the dinghies led by Julian in the Topaz, Tug in a Laser 2000, John in his Quba, Norman in the Laser Radial and Di &Tom in a Gamba, with the bigger boats and the diminutive Sea Hopper bringing up the rear. The results after handicaps were: 1st place - Julian, Topaz Duo 2nd place - Tug, Laser 2000 3rd place - John, Quba That’s five straight first’s for Julian, five seconds for Tug and 4 thirds for John in the last five races; a brilliant achievement by all of them.
