by Tahnee Wright THE PURISSIMA CONCEPCIO MONASTERY in Benissa will reopen as a hotel, it was announced this week. The closure of the Franciscan friary – founded in 1613 - was announced in June by Benissa Town Council who confirmed that the remaining four friars could no longer maintain the building

due to its size and their age. Over 250 people attend what was supposed to be a ‘small’ leaving ceremony in August when the friars moved out. The monastery –declared of Cultural Interest (BIC) – was offered to Caritas and to the Commission for Assistance to Refugees: meetings were held by the council to decide a future use for the space, linked to Benissa

and its history but the high cost of restoring the building made the project unfeasible for the NGOs. Father Angel, who lived at the friary between 1980 and 1991 said that the church within the monastery will not form part of the agreement with the hotelier – it will remain fully functional for the Franciscans of Benissa to meet and worship once a month.

by Tahnee Wright THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR to Spain presented Sylvia Tatnell from TeuladaMoraira with a British Empire Medal last week. British Empire Medals are awarded twice annually by Her Majesty The Queen and recognise meritorious civil or military service. Sylvia, who moved to Teulada-Moraira in 1971, was presented with the medal for her services to British residents and the wider community here in Spain. She was a local councillor for 25 years and Head of Social Services. Sylvia is now President of the Teulada-Moraira Alzheimer’s Society (AFA) and helps the municipality’s most vulnerable residents. She was surrounded by her family and friends at the award ceremony and said: “I am overwhelmed. I decided to go into politics 25 years ago, because I felt I could be of help to fellow British residents in Spain. I am deeply honored to have received this award, which is a fantastic encouragement to continue assisting people in need.” She also expressed her greatest thanks to former mayors Antoni Joan Bertomeu and Pepe Ciscar - who attended the award ceremony - for their support whilst she worked at the Town Hall. Silvia is now entitled to sign using the post-nominal letters "BEM".

by Fabio Delucci A workshop to promote the values of ecological, sustainable fishing to children in the Cala del Moraig last Saturday was so popular, BENITACHELL’S Department of Education has arranged another one. Places for ‘Tu primer taller de pesca ecofriendly en el Moraig’ (Your first ecofriendly fishing workshop in the Moraig) were limited and some children were unable to participate, so another workshop has been arranged to take

place Saturday December 16. The free workshop is open to boys and girls from eight years of age. Participants will enjoy a variety of activities, including making their own fishing rods, learning how to tie knots, how to hook bait and how to fish without impacting the seabed. In the workshop last weekend children learnt about the most common species to call the seabed home, as well as the most dangerous. Councillor Myra van ‘t Hoff said: "It has been incredible the welcome,

CALPE Council recently presented three electric bicycles and five electric cars that will be used by council staff to promote its Sustainable Energy Action Plan. In addition to the four recharging points already in operation in the town, three new ones were unveiled – one on avenida Europa, another on Ejercitos Espanoles and another just outside the Town Hall. Calpe Mayor Cesar Sanchez said this "is another initiative to boost efficiency and energy savings whilst reducing CO2 emissions to ensure a more sustainable municipality, improving citizens quality of life.” The municipality has also installed LED lights in municipal buildings, which offer significant energy saving of up to 70 per cent.

Pensioner rescued

AN 83-YEAR-OLD British man was rescued from the bed of the River Gorgos in Jalon on Wednesday morning. According to the Provincial Fire Consortium, the man was in his car when, for unknown reason, he ended up in the riverbed. Worried onlookers called

emergency services and firefighters arrived with three fire engines. The man had managed to free himself from his car and firefighters located him in the riverbed, hauled him on to a stretcher and carried him to the safety where he was attended by medics.

Detained for sexually assaulting two minors A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been detained accused of sexually assaulting two minors in Javea. The investigation began after the victims filed a complaint with the Guardia Civil. The children described how they met the accused just one day prior to the incident and he later added them on Facebook. The predator messaged the victims on the social media site and invited them to watch a show

of shooting stars with him in an isolated area near the Ermita del Calvario. The children obliged and met with the accused. Taking advantage of the darkness and remoteness of the site, the man allegedly sexually assaulted the victims. It took the Guardia Civil less than 24 hours to locate and arrest the accused after identifying him on Facebook. He remains in custody awaiting trial.

German supermarket giant returns to Finestrat by Tahnee Wright ALDI opened a new store in Finestrat on Wednesday as part of its development plan in the Valencian Community, where it currently has 54 stores, 32 of which in the Alicante Province. The 1,200-square metre store is in the new commercial park in La Cala (Avenida Finestrat, 11-13), next to Leroy Merlin and offers ample parking. The new store has created 10 new jobs. Acting Mayor of Finestrat Victor Dario Llinares attended the grand opening ceremony and was honoured to cut the ribbon as shoppers waited in anticipation to snap up the deals to be had. Llinares thanked ALDI for having chosen

Robbery on the rise THIEVES broke in to a shop in the centre of Javea this week and stole money both from the till and the Christmas raffle collection. The owners of the shop – near the town’s health centre - told the Spanish press how, in the early hours of Wednesday morn-

ing, the criminals forced the chain and lock and crept into the shop. The thieves managed to flee the crime scene with the money without getting caught. This is the third theft in Javea in less than a month - at the end of October thieves attempted to break in

to Bar Imperial on the Placa de Baix but were deterred by neighbours. The same thieves were expected to be behind a break in at Bar L'Avinguda on Avenida Juan Carlos I on the same night, where they stole money from the till and ramsacked the place.

by Rose Holmes Marina Alta chef Rafa Soler was recently awarded his first Michelin star and his home town of Teulada-Moraira couldn’t wait to celebrate. The municipality honoured Soler in an event at the Town Hall. The celebration was led by Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares, who was joined by councillors together with friends and family of the chef. Mayor Linares spoke of Soler’s experience and how his hard work and determination has led him to being recognised by the French tire company. A video documenting the chef’s life and career followed, before Mayor Linares pre-

sented him with a sculpture by local artist Toni Mari and an embroidered apron with his name and the Teulada-Moraira logo. An emotional Soler thanked both the council and the municipality for their support past and present and highlighted that a lot of his dishes focus on food from Teulada-Moraira… he even uses traditional techniques taught to him by the local fishermen. At his restaurant – Audrey’s in Calpe – the menu features a dynamic combination of flavours fuelled by his inventive passion to create culinary masterpieces. Reviewers on TripAdvisor say: “Absolutely incredible, can't wait to return!” and “Beautiful food, excellent presentation and flavour - a true gastro experience.”

by Fabio Delucci LAST THURSDAY 64 members of the Levante Council of the Navy League of the United States gathered at Restauarante Pepe in Alcalali for their annual Thanksgiving lunch. Vice President Peter Langley gave the Thanksgiving address reminding everyone of the origin and purpose of the annual celebration. Reverend Tom Pringle gave the Grace. “The excellent food and camaraderie set the scene for a very enjoyable occasion.” said Secretary Barbra Power. The Council´s Christmas lunch will be held next Saturday December 9. The International Navy League of the United States, Levante Council is part of a worldwide non-profit association, formed to offer assistance and hospitality to the service men and women of the United States and NATO Alliance. The Levante Council, covering the Costa Blanca from Alicante to Valencia, has a mainly American and British membership, but also boasts members from Belgium, France, Germany and Holland. 91-YEAR-OLD local painter Rosa Cortell Valles has donated almost all of her works to Caritas in Javea. The organisation will sell the paintings to raise funds for the needy. Rosa, originally from Javea herself, emigrated to France in the late 1950s where she trained in fine art and developed her practice with a paintbrush. She specialises in painting landscapes and nature scenes and the works donated to Caritas mostly depict the agricultural and mountainous settings of the Alps and Avignon, France where she lived until she returned to Javea in 2000. The collection also includes paintings of villages across the Marina Alta.

Can you help? Tah dah: A small mountain of food was collected in just 24 hours

by Rose Holmes THE FRANCISCAN SHELTER FOR MEN at Palma de Gandia provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness, some of whom are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. Admission is solely on the basis of need and all nationalities and religions are accepted. The shelter is funded entirely by charitable donations, with no state aid or official grants. Recently, there was a crisis where food stocks were reduced almost to zero.

The Franciscans were forced to send out an urgent appeal for help just to be able to feed the residents. Quick to respond to the appeal was local Freemason’s Lodge Oliva La Safor, who asked members to donate as much food as possible. Within the space of just 24 hours, a small mountain of food was collected for the hungry residents, including long life goods and tinned produce. Clothes and medicines were also donated which always prove useful. The lodge have appealed for members of the local community to donate to the shelter – food and medicines are in highest demand at the moment (including long life milk, pasta, rice, cheese and olive oil) together with the usual:

Clothing (all sizes – new or secondhand): Track suits, particularly bottoms (preferably non-iron), t-shirts, underwear, soft pyjamas and socks (not white). Bedding for 90cm beds: Plastic mattress protectors, flat sheets and fitted under sheets with (preferably) matching pillowcases (flannel or brushed cotton), blankets (warm and washable). Toiletries, both opened and part used are accepted: Disposable razors, shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel and skin creams. Household: Bath towels (not white), bleach, toilet paper, washing-up liquid and large bin-bags. APASA Christmas Fair

APASA will hold their much anticipated Christmas Fair tomorrow Saturday December 2 at their shelter in Javea. From 12.30pm, guests can browse the wide range of stalls and try their luck on the tómbola. APASA was founded in 1999 by a group of various nationalities, Spanish, English, German and Swiss, with the aim of rescuing those animals that were evidently abandoned, ill-treated or lost.

Initially there were just a dozen dogs, now there are over 250, needing full time staff. APASA rely greatly on volunteers, working in the shelter, walking dogs and at their many fund-raising events. All proceeds raised at the Christmas Fair will directly fund the goal of making the lives of the dogs better and provide essential care for them. Arrested - man wante A 57-YEAR-OLD Italian fraudster wanted in three countries was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through Calpe. The criminal – who has already been in prison once before - had three search and detention orders issued on him: by authorities in Gran Canaria for crimes totalling €700,000; in Madrid for crimes totalling €900,000 and in Italy for various scams worth millions of euros. The investigation began earlier this year after police became aware of a rise in the number of burglaries in urbanisations in Altea and Calpe. Police officers soon discovered the burglaries were all carried out in similar fashion and suspected the it was the same perpetrator operating in each municipality. It wasn’t until the burglar was caught on camera by one of his victims that police could proceed with identifying and arresting the suspect. The fraudster, known as ‘Torrebruno’, was living in El Campello and operated very much

‘under the radar’ – he rented properties without contracts and hired cars in one of his daughter’s names. At the beginning of this month, undercover police officers followed him to a restaurant in Calpe. The criminal was surveying the surroundings in his car to check for police presence. Realising he was being followed, he accelerated out of the restaurant car park and tried to flee towards Altea via the N-332 where he ran into more police officers ready to intercept him. Cornered, the fraudster went back on himself and headed towards Benissa, where again, police were waiting for him. He tried to take a back road, crashing into another car and considerably damaging others in his path. Realising there was no escape, the criminal held his hands up and was sent straight to prison, where he will be detained until trial.

Celebrating the III Centenary ‘EXFICALP’ kicks off today Friday December 1, celebrating the III Centenary of the Hermitage of Sant Joan and Cases de Torrat. The annual philatelic exhibition, organised by Calpe’s Philatelic Group, takes place this year in the Ajuntament Vell Exhibition Hall and will be open to visitors until Sunday December 31.

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. It also refers to the collection, appreciation and research activities on stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting, which does not necessarily involve the study of stamps. It is pos-

Everyone has a book inside them and sadly this is where it usually stays. As Richard Bach says, ‘a professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.’ Writing a book is a challenge but by way of letters and emails most people have already written enough to complete several paperbacks. As with learning any new skill there’s a formula for success. Using advice given or learned I added my name to over 40 book titles and I have ghosted as many more. Your typing finger is simply a spare tongue so let your finger do the talking. Most wannabe authors are deterred by their inability to write to retail standards. But, poor writing never discouraged successful authors like Jeffrey Archer or Stephen King. Their storyline inspirations are simply handed to a ghost writer who writes their book. Most books are brought to publishing standards by a ghost-writer rather than the person named on the book’s cover. Many well-known authors lend their names to the works of lesser known authors. These include Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Clive Cussler. Clancy’s publishers say: “Tom Clancy creates the ideas for these series and the writers execute Clancy’s ideas. All are subject to his supervision.” It helps if the writer has experience of the subject. It is not unknown for hoteliers, social workers, those employed in the sex industry, policemen and entertainers to make more money selling their life story than living it.

Our bus arrived outside a nondescript long low red brick building, that I have named Stallag 1V. Morning mist clung to the ground, my breath forms a frozen cloud as it mingled with the chilled air. The three of us were walked single file by our driver into the building, greeted by our minders. Claire is the head honcho, then Thelma and Michelle, all were official in their appearance, however with a friendly attitude. We were sat in comfortable arm chairs and given tea or coffee and biscuits, this was not what I expected from Stallag 1V. Thelma produced a black board in which we were asked searching questions. What day of the week is it? The date? The weather? And what year is it? Next, we sang a song, Side by Side, later it was to be, It’s A Long Way To Tipperary. Next a simple card game. Then when prompted we had to look at a world map and tell our minders where we were born. In

past visits, we had played with a ball, with a number stuck to our forehead, when Thelma called out a number, you had to roll the ball to the person whose number was called corresponding to the number fixed to their forehead. All seems rather strange to you, does it? Earlier this year I was diagnosed with dementia, after having a disturbing series of symptoms, I was interviewed by a psychiatrist and a doctor and then by the senior consultant at the unit. I was given a brain scan, after being injected with a dye. Now the second brain scan has now been done at the University College Hospital for nuclear medicine in London. So where do I go from here? In 3 months, I will see the consultant again, the results of that last scan, showed that I will likely have Alzheimer’s/ Dementia/ Lewy bodies, (Lewy bodies is a form of Parkinson’s decease), why likely? The

I recently read that the Chinese have just performed the first head transplant on a cadaver, now they will try on a live person, if needed I will volunteer, then I will be able to order a Chinese take away in Cantonese or another dialect.

We are making progress with those wonderful things called verbs, and if you have been following these articles from the beginning you will now have a few of them under your belt. Without explaining all the ramifications, we have looked at the present tense of a number of verbs and their infinitives. To explain this differently in terms of one verb (hablar), this is what we now know about it so far: Hablar = to speak (infinitive) Hablo = I speak (first person singular) Hablas = you speak (second person singular) Habla = he or she speaks, or you speak, more polite (third person singular) Hablamos = we speak (first person plural) Hablan = they speak (third person plural). Whatever you’ve understood of all of that is good! For those of you who are already familiar with verb conjugation in Spanish, you will be aware that I have so far omitted one form which is the second person plural – in this case habláis. There is no particular reason for omitting this and we will include it of course once we go into more details about the present tense later on. It is a form which does not have any resonances in English, since we do not have a plu-

ral version of “you”. That makes it hard to translate, and we end up with “you two”, “you folks” “you lot” and so on. However, we will look into all of that in more detail later on. We’re now going to look at another form which is even simpler than all of the above. Sticking for now with the verb hablar, the word in question is hablando which means “speaking.” The proper grammar name for this form of a verb is a “gerund”, also referred to as the “present participle”, and it is broadly the equivalent of the “…ing” form in English. However, we need to be careful as it isn’t used nearly so much in Spanish as the “…ing” forms are in English. Nevertheless is quite a common type of word and also very useful and also (this is the best bit) extremely easy to work out! We have mentioned before that all verbs can be divided into two parts – the root and the ending. Continuing with hablar – if we remove the ending – ar we are left with the root, which is therefore habl- This process is a very important one as we will need to do it for all verbs all the time, whatever else we do with them in future articles. Now hablar is a verb that ends in – ar, and therefore follows the same simple rule as all – ar verbs, which is to change the – ar to – ando, giving us habl-ando,

Car Insurance – Points Recovery Course Spanish points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. Driving without a seat belt, using a mobile phone and not keeping a safe driving distance will result in a 3 point fine.

What is covered? Churning… the worst enemy of your pension or investment portfolio? So, before anyone asks, no I’ve not given up financial services to campaign against the dairy industry! Churning, in financial terms, is when a financial advisor persuades a client to buy or sell funds with the sole intention of generating commissions, rather than acting in the client’s best interests. This unethical practise is illegal in the UK, so why is it so prolific here in Spain? The problem lies in the fact that in Spain, financial advisors can still receive hidden payments from investment fund providers. I have seen numerous examples here in Spain where companies have found a new fund provider who will pay them a 3-5% ‘entry charge’ when they persuade their clients to invest in that particular fund. This generates problems in two ways: Firstly, that 3-5% comes right out of the client’s pocket, and is either paid for by reducing the number of units you buy in the fund, or by elevating the fees for a period of time, normally 5 years, in order to recoup that

payment. This can leave the client playing catch up from day one. The other problem, and often even more damage results from this practise, is that funds that an advisor wouldn’t usually recommend - perhaps because they don’t have a strong track-record, are from an unproven fund house, or are poorly regulated – are finding their ways into client’s portfolios, thereby lowering the quality of their investment portfolio. The funds your advisor chooses for your pension or investment portfolio, should be chosen independently, after rigorous research. ECB’s new VP will ‘probably’ be Spanish

THE EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK (ECB)’s vicepresident position, currently held by Vitor Constancio who has until May next year to stand down, will probably go to a Spanish candidate, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said in comments published in the Spanish press on Tuesday. Spain has not held a position on the ECB’s executive board since 2012 after the exit of Jose Manuel Gonzalez Paramo. “I’m convinced that the position will go to Spain,” de Guindos said. The ECB’s executive board is charged with implementing monetary policy for the 19 member states that use the euro and consists of the president, vice president and four board members. All executive board members are appointed for an eight-year term that cannot be renewed. De Guindos also dismissed rumours that he was a candidate for the position of Eurogroup head, currently held by Jeroen Dijsselbloem. De Guindos has been considered in Brussels political circles as one of the main candidates to head up Eurogroup - an informal body where the ministers of the euro area member states discuss matters relating to their shared responsibilities related to the euro.

Marina Alta Floral Club ANN MARIE KENDRICK will host a Christmas demonstration for The Marina Alta Floral Club – ‘A Touch of Sparkle’ - next Thursday December 7 at the Salon de Actos, La Senieta, Moraira. NAFAS demonstrator and national teacher from Peterborough, Ann Marie enjoys taking part in floral competitions and has helped out at various flower festivals, the Chelsea Flower Show and also decorated Westminster Abbey. The Christmas Charity Hamper Raffle will be drawn with proceeds going to the club’s two chosen charities. Let’s dance THE ‘JIVE FUN JAVEA’ jive club has moved to Javea Quo Vadis on Calle Cannes. Jive dancing is a fast and very spirited Latin dance, made popular in the 1940s by young Americans who adopted the movements to fit with the emerging sounds of rock and roll. While there are many more complex movements in jive, some of which incorporate spinning or flipping the female dance partner, the basic movement is a well-controlled, 6-count foot pattern that is actually easy to practice and eventually master. Snoring is often linked to lifestyle, and there are some simple changes you can make to help prevent it. Try these five self-help tips: 1. Maintain a healthy weight and diet. Being overweight by just a few kilos can lead to snoring. Fatty tissue around your neck squeezes the airway and prevents air flowing in and out freely. 2. Try to sleep on your side rather than your back. While sleeping on your back, your tongue, chin

and any excess fatty tissue under your chin can relax and squash your airway. Sleeping on your side prevents this. 3. Avoid alcohol before going to bed. Alcohol makes your muscles relax more than usual during a normal night's sleep. This may encourage the back of your throat to collapse as you breathe, which causes snoring. 4. Quit or cut down on smoking. Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of your nose and throat, causing

swelling and catarrh. This means airflow is decreased and you're more likely to snore. 5. Keep your nose clear, so that you breathe in through your nose rather than your mouth. If an allergy is blocking your nose, try antihistamine tablets or a nasal spray. Ask your pharmacist for advice, or see your GP, if you're affected by an allergy or any other condition that affects your nose or breathing, such as sinusitis.

RTN talks you through how to make this eye-catching, carnivorous bog planter in four simple steps. Start With: • Clear container with no drainage or lid (a glass vase would be perfect!) • Pebbles for drainage • Horticultural charcoal • Sand • Peat moss or carnivorous plant blend soil • Carnivorous plants • Distilled water Use organic products when possible to avoid chemical additives. Feeding Directions Carnivorous Plants DO NOT REQUIRE feeding. They get their energy from photosynthesis like any other plant, so all they need to

survive is light and water. However, insect carnivory serves as their version of using fertilizer. So you don't need to feed your plant, but if you do, follow these tips: • Venus Flytraps consume live food. The movement of a live insect inside a closed trap tells the plant that it has captured prey rather than debris. • First, catch a live insect. The prey should be no more than 2/3 the length of the trap. • Optional: Place the insect in a small, closed sandwich bag and place the bag in the refrigerator or freezer long enough for the insect to stop moving/pass out from the cold, but not long enough to kill it. • Grasp the insect with tweezers. Brush it back and forth along the inner surface of the trap and its trigger hairs until it closes. Then release your hold on the insect and pull your tweezers gently out of the closed trap. • The insect will warm up and move around inside the trap, causing it to gradually close tighter. The trap leaf will digest the insect and re-open about a week later, leaving behind the insect's shell. Removing the shell is optional. • Sundews can be fed either live or dead caught insects, freeze-dried bloodworms or small fish food flakes. Small crickets may also be used, but if alive, their legs and arms should be removed to prevent escape. Place the food directly on the tentacled leaf surface. Feed one to two leaves of the sundew every week or two. You can also place them in an area with a lot of fruit flies if you notice them in your kitchen.

What is blood pressure? Imagine a hose pipe connected to a tap. If the tap is turned on slightly, the hose will be soft because the pressure inside is low. If the tap is full on, or if a hose of smaller diameter is used, it will feel hard as the pressure in it is high. The same principles apply to blood in the blood vessels. Kidney disease and high blood pressure are connected because failing kidneys produce chemicals that contract the blood vessels and so raises blood pressure. In addition, they cannot eliminate excess salt, which then leads to retention of water in the circulation. This increases blood volume, which further raises the blood pressure. Blood pressure can also rise in hyperthyroidism – sometimes for no apparent reason. What effect does high blood pressure have on cats? It often damages the eyesight. Tiny blood vessels cross the visual layer (the retina) in the back of the eye. High pressure can rupture these and the leaked blood covers the retina, sometimes obscuring vision. In some cases, high blood pressure may also cause retinal detachment. High blood pressure may also accelerate kidney damage. The heart has to work harder to circulate the blood when blood pressure is high. This reduces its efficiency, and eventually causes heart disease and heart failure. High blood pressure may cause rupture of the tiny vessels in the brain leading to changes in the personality, seizures, collapse or other nervous symptoms. What is the treatment for high blood pressure in cats? Drugs may be given to relax the blood vessels, so they widen and the pressure drops. A low salt diet may help. Regular check-ups with your vet are needed for monitoring.
