Security levels soar for resort

by Tahnee Wright The City Council of Benidorm held a meeting recently, where attendees agreed unanimously that security levels in the city continue to increase. The meeting - held quarterly – was chaired by Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez who was delighted to welcome British Consul in Alicante Sarah-Jane Morris. Also present was Councillor of Security - Lorenzo Martinez, National Police Commissioner - Alfredo Garrido, Local Police Chief - Juan Fuertes and General Secretary of hotel association HOSBEC Nuria Montes together with members of Benidorm’s British Business Association and representatives from tour operators Jet2, Saga Holidays and TUI. Attendees agreed that measures implemented have been hugely successful, especially the addition of two sniffer dogs to the Local Police team. The inauguration of the Foreign Tourist Assistance Service (SATE) in the Rincon de Loix area of the city was discussed, with Mayor Perez confirming that it should be in operation before the end of the year. ing in a bid to get their money refunded. Hosbec has demanded that British tourists should have to produce a prescription in food poisoning cases “to provide evidence that the complaint is real and not a scam”. Calpe to welcome two new towering hotels “But we’re building you a golf course!” Calpe Mayor Cesar Sanchez announced this week that the municipality is studying the potential build of a golf course, with the aim of de-seasonalising the city’s tourism trade and guaranteeing jobs all year round. Sanchez said that the build of a golf course will allow Calpe to “continue in its strive for excellence” and that “the goal of local government, which is to promote employment, will be guaranteed throughout the year.” But some residents in Calpe are less than impressed and are instead of the opinion that the mayor is trying to ‘sweeten them up’ after authorising the

build of two huge hotels – one on La Fossa beach that will reach up to 25 floors and another split across two 30-floor towers. The authorisation comes just six weeks after a report revealed that up to 13 of the 30 floors in the new Suitopia - Sol y Mar Suites Hotel may be illegal. The study, commissioned by the opposing Compromis party, blamed the consistory – who granted the license - for "a serious urban infraction and a fraud of law" that "disregards the coastline and the environment of the Penyal d'Ifac.” Calpe council was asked to comment but did not respond by the time of going to print.

IN September, Benidorm City Council processed over 20 per cent of cases electronically. The figures were announced as part of a meeting earlier this week between the council and Lorca City Council (Murcia) as both administrations advocated the development of new technologies in public administration. The councils discussed the implementation of various platforms and procedures and what has and hasn’t worked for them. Of the 8,767 cases filed in Benidorm in September, the council processed 1,867 of them electronically and said doing so “helps to reduce costs and improve the service citizens receive.” Check out what you can do online - https://sede.benidorm.org/

Marza was in Pedreguer on Tuesday when he made the announcement, confirming that both municipal escoletes managed by the municipalities themselves and those managed by concessionary companies will benefit

from the scheme. The nurseries that will offer free places in 2018/ 2019 are: • El Albergue in Benidoleig • Silene d’Ifac in Calpe • l’Escoleta in Denia • Mestra Vicenta Estela in La Xara • las guarderias in El Verger • las guarderias in Ondara • la Glorieta in Pedreguer • la Trilladora in Pego • l’Oroneta in Javea Denia’s Councillor of Education Rafa Carrio explained that once this

scheme is in place, the Generalitat will study the possibility of opening more state-funded nurseries for children aged 2 in public schools across the Marina Alta. Denia is the busiest municipality for children aged 2-3 receiving statefunded nursery education, offered at the Cervantes, Llebeig and Vessanes schools. The Generalitat’s Ministry of Education has increased its budget for the region to €42 million to be able to offer these free nursery places.

A wee-lly good idea Adios pee pee! by Fabio Delucci Complaints from residents in Denia about the smells left lingering by dogs urinating in the street led Denia Council to launch a campaign - raising awareness among dog owners that not only should they pick up their pet's number twos, they should also splash the street with some water when they wee. The town’s Department of Public Safety has been giving out free water bottles, fondly labelled ‘Brisa de la Marineta' and 'Rosada del Montgo’ for dog owners to fill

before they take their furry friend out for a walk, ready to wash down wherever their pet decides to do their business. Over 2,000 water bottles were prepared, distributed by local businesses around the town. The campaign has been well received, with many residents taking to social media to commend the council, in particular, Marisa Otero Sampedro who posted a photo of her six-month old Rottweiler Xena together with the water bottle to Facebook group La Ciudad de Denia with the caption: “I wanted to thank Denia Council

for this initiative… I am very happy with the water bottle for my dog Xena’s pipis! It is the perfect size. When I first used it, people gave me funny looks as if I were a gremlin cleaning the streets, but I would highly recommend the bottles to all who have hairy friends at home. Together, we can keep Denia clean and smelling great!” Other members added: “It is comfortable to carry and it does not weigh a lot.” “Very good initiative. the puppies are innocent of everything, if the owners do it well, everything is fine.”

of coastline is heavily regressed and the storms caused considerable damage to the seaside houses, some of which were built as long ago as 1928. Costas plan to move between 8,000 and 10,000 cubic

metres of excess sand from the manmade beach to Les Deveses. At first, the sand will be almost black in colour due to the oxidation of algae and Posidonia but the sea will soon clean it and lighten it.

Water works AQUALIA will begin works on the drinking water supply in Els Poblets this month, replacing 3,311 metres of pipes in Barranquets and Sorts de la Mar. Afredo Madrid of Aqualia said the works "aim to optimise water resources and improve the service to citizens.” Next month, the water treatment plant itself will undergo improve-

ment works aimed at minimising outages caused by breakdowns, with a new system installed allowing the plant to be controlled remotely. With a budget of almost €300,000 euros, these measures are included in the €6 million Investment Plan that Aqualia has executed over the last seven years.

Happy pills A 44-year-old Norwegian man was arrested in Benidorm for crimes against public health after he was found to be in possession of over 2,500 pills which he planned to sell. The detainee was loitering in an area often frequented by drug addicts and known for drug trafficking. Seeing police on patrol in the area, he attempted to escape unnoticed but officers gave chase and soon caught up with him. They searched the him and found the pills, mostly anti-depressants, which he confessed he intended on profiting from.

Thief targets jewellery store THE ‘MONTENEGRO’ JEWELLERY STORE in Denia was targeted by a thief in the early hours of Wednesday morning. At around 5.00am, the perpetrator smashed one of the stores’ windows with a manhole cover and proceeded to steal a variety of watches through the hole in the glass. The alarm sounded and neighbours were quick to notify the police and the owners of the store. The owners of the store – situated on the corner of Calle Marques de Campo and Calle Carlos Senti - provided the police with CCTV recordings and the shop remain closed until Wednesday afternoon when the window was repaired.

Facing prison for football piracy by Tahnee Wright SEVEN PEOPLE have been arrested for illegally broadcasting LaLiga football matches in Alicante, Albacete, Antequera (Malaga), Gandia, Madrid and Xativa.

The content was offered via direct download, peer-to-peer (also known as P2P) and streaming and websites were hosted on servers located in Spain as well as in Canada, France and the United States to make it “difficult to locate” the

criminal organisation behind the piracy, the Interior Ministry reported. The investigation began following a complaint filed by LaLiga in 2016. The websites were traced which

resulted in the arrest of seven members of the criminal organisation and the blocking of seven domains and three bank accounts. The investigation continues and the National Police have not ruled out further arrests.

A 41-YEAR-OLD Colombian man has been arrested for glassing a 36-year-old British man at a cocktail bar in Moraira. A 41-year-old Dominican man also faces charges over his involvement in the brawl, which at least four more people joined in on. The police investigation revealed that, earlier in the evening, the British man had a heated discussion with several people in the street about parking, including the Colombian and the Dominican. Later in the evening, the three crossed paths again at the cocktail bar and got into an argument, which soon spiralled out of control.

Need for speed POLICE arrested a driver on Tuesday but not before he led them on high-speed chase some 20 kilometres from Altea to Benissa. The driver attempted to flee from the police, driving erratically along the N-332 and dodging various obstacles. He proceeded through the nar-

row streets of Benissa, causing pedestrians to jump out of the way to avoid being run over. The police finally cornered the driver just metres from Benissa police station and put him straight into handcuffs. It has not yet been revealed what the police originally attempted pull him over for.

IN MEMORY: Juanita Kaiser talks of her parent’s trials and tribulations as brigadistas

The Benissan-born daughter of Austrian Brigadistas Dora Hait and Hans Kaiser returned to the Marina Alta last week as the municipality paid homage to the International Brigades. The International Brigades were paramilitary units set up to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. The organisation existed for two years, from 1936 until 1938. It is estimated that during the entire war, between 32,000 and

The complainant – Bernabeu’s ex-wife – claims that the pair had a civil agreement in place which he flouted, causing her to take steps to recover the sum through criminal proceedings.

Bernabeu is paid by the city on a pro-rata basis for his attendance at plenary sessions and other events. He also works at a local radio station. This is not the first time Bernabeu has appeared in court in connection to debts, he was questioned over non-payment of social security for a local television station that he was the Director of many years ago.

JAVEA’S PP has condemned the council as properties in the old town deteriorate to dangerous levels. The PP says it should be the responsibility of the council to enforce ITEs - a mandatory, periodic inspection that all buildings over 50

years old must pass in order to ensure their safety. Councillor of Town Planning Isabel Bolufer says the council has requested data on buildings over 50 years old from the catastro but has received no response. ITEs is the responsibility of

the owners of the property, who must then send the certificate to the council. Bolufer said it is hard for the council to enforce ITEs and its especially further complicated “if it's an abandoned building or in the hands of banks.”

by Tahnee Wright 40 STUDENTS from Teulada - the 4th graders from ESO and the 1st graders from I.E.S – took a trip to the Senillar wetland recently, carrying out a series of activities together with teachers and one of the research teams from the University of Valencia, headed by biology profession and doctor Antonio Camacho Gonzalez. Professor Camacho is currently work-

ing for the Teulada council, commissioned to analyse the main ecological characteristics of the Senillar including the water and the flora and fauna. The students assisted researchers taking samples and the professor explained the ecological functioning of the wetland, interaction between microorganisms in the water and its role in the carbon cycle as well as the relation of those processes to climate change.

Professor Camacho also talked about the methodology used in the Senillar to measure greenhouse gas and how researchers ascertain the wetland’s carbon output. The Senillar wetland is regarded as one of the most precious ecosystems on the Marina Alta coast and has been under protection since 2014 when it was declared as a wildlife reserve by the environmental protection office.

Calpe’s Councillor of Tourism Jan Van Parijs was in London this week representing the municipality at the World Travel Market (WTM) event. WTM is a UK event for the global travel industry, launched at London's Olympia in 1980 before moving to Earl’s Court in 1992 and then to ExCeL London in 2002. Almost 46,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and representatives of the international

media, converge on ExCeL London each year in November to attend WTM. Calpe aims to capitalise on the British tourists who already – followed by the German tourists – frequent the coastal city the most in the mid and low seasons. Van Parijs said: “whilst the number of tourists visiting Calpe from other parts of Europe dwindles in the mid and low seasons, the number of British tourists continues to grow year-on-year.”

New routes from Valencia Airport VALENCIA AIRPORT in Manises - also known as Manises Airport – has introduced 18 new routes for the winter season. Holidaymakers can now travel to Barcelona, Budapest, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Hamburg, Krakow, Marrakech, Marseille, Milan, Munich, Nantes, Naples, Palma, Rotterdam, Santander and Seville.

by Tahnee Wright BENITACHELL’S municipal library was recognised for its commitment to the promotion of reading recently as it was awarded the National ‘Maria Moliner 2017’ Prize. Maria Moliner (30 March 1900 – 22 January 1981) was a Spanish librarian and lexicographer known for her famous Diccionario de uso del espanol, first published in 1966–1967 The library in Benitachell was one of only 10 libraries in the Alicante Province to be recognised with the prize and received a grant of €1,706 towards the purchase of new books. Segarra said the council is "very grateful for the recognition, that rewards the ongoing work of the library to encourage reading among all audiences, regardless of their age and cultural tastes and innovative workshops adapted to different interests.” The library has been open for 17 years and currently has 1,420 registered members – impressive given the population of Benitachell is only 4,104. It made history earlier this year as it recorded its 10,000th book. The library boasts 2,794 books aimed at children and young people – evidence of its commitment to the promotion of reading from an early age.

Six months to go… Rulo y La Contrabanda have been announced as headliners for 2018’s MontgoRock Festival in May. An urban rock group formed in 2010, Rulo y La Contrabanda are led by Raul Gutierrez, better known as Rulo. Spaniard Rulo formed his first band – Suizidio - in 1992 aged 14 with friends from his hometown of Reinosa. In 1996, he founded his second band – La Fuga – with friend Adolfo Garmendia (Fito). La Fuga played more than 500 concerts across Spain and in several countries around the world, releasing eight albums. Rulo left La Fuga to form Rulo y La Contrabanda, who have since released 3 studio albums and 2 live albums, playing in 11 countries around the world. Jacinta Pastor from Javea’s Social Services Department will present her book ‘Muereme’ tonight Friday 10 November at the Casa de la Cultura on Placa de Baix. The book includes 10 short stories illustrating some of the modern-day causes of suicide, written by Pastor – who lives in Benitachell – edited by Circulo Rojo and illustrated by Antuan El8. The presentation will take place from 8.00pm and residents, neighbours and visitors alike are all invited to attend.

The inaugaration of Benitachell’s ‘MoscaTXell’ event was held last weekend and the programme offers a variety of activities throughout the month of November as the municipality pays tribute to its “star product” – Moscatel. The event aims to bring together local entrepreneurs including farmers and winegrowers, cultural entities and restaurateurs,

along with professors and experts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. A to B: The cycle path will be 66 kilometres long

66 kilometre new cycle path by Rose Holmes Valencia’s Provincial Council is studying the possibility of creating a cycle path connecting Carcaixent in Valencia with Gandia and Denia. The Diuptacion has commissioned the Foundation of the Spanish Railways (FFE) to draft a report on the feasibility of running the path alongside the old Carcaixent-Gandia-Denia railway line. The cycle path will be 66 kilometres

long and pass through the Valencian municipalities of Alzira, Benifairo de la Valldigna and Tavernes de la Valldigna before reaching the Safor region, serving as a link between Gandia and the capital of the Marina Alta. The Diputacion’s Deputy of Environment JosepBort said that the path will be "a key transforming axis for the municipalities, which will facilitate the connection between the different rural nuclei.”

Bort said that, once implemented, "the axis will improve the quality of life in the municipalities through which it passes and new employment opportunities will be created thanks to the economic activities associated with the use of bicycles and the non-motorised development of the territory.” Once the report has been drafted, the Provincial Council will use it to begin the design of the cycle path for works to begin in 2018.

Villa Moraira - constructed by architects and builders of Valencian DICAM GROUP – is the only Passivhaus certified home in the Valencian community. Passivhaus is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint. The villa occupies a 393 square metre plot and was designed with sustainability at heart. Polyurethane has been replaced with natural insulators such as cork and wood fiber and a large tank collects rainwater and turns it into drinking water. The group managed to reduce the project’s carbon footprint by employing local tradesmen: “If suppliers are closer, carbon emissions are lower. Social support JAVEA has renewed its collaboration agreement with two local associations. A COUPLE of months ago, AEMET launched a challenge on social media - asking followers to post photographs of the Montgo Massif taken from as far away as Valencia. First to wow the crowds was @CarlaxyS5, who regularly uploads photos of the mountain taken from Alboraya (20 minutes in the car from the centre of Valencia) and Massalfassar (10 minutes further north in the Horta Nord comarca). But @minervagra came out on top with a snap taken from Sagunt, more than 100 kilometres from the Montgo Massif as the crow flies and 146 kilometres on the AP-7 motorway.

And then, by using my pen I turn it into something that enriches others more than a bank

note can, I think of that as magic. My taste is poetry, admittedly the poor man of the arts. Most people will agree that they didn’t abandon good music, art or poetry, these adornments abandoned them. I do think that verse, like music and pictures, has been debased by changes in fashion. Following inspiration rather than fashion my pen scratches beyond the midnight hour. Did I become rich as a consequence? Yes, I did actually; I became so rich that the materially wealthy envied me and others like me. My poem brought a wealth of sorts to those for whom coinage has no value. It brought me a wealth that money cannot buy.

It’s happened. Something the script writers of Emmerdale will be able to empathise with: I have finally and comprehensively lost the plot. My ‘office’, aka the landing at the top of the stairs, is close to our bedroom, and I had just logged in to my computer when the alarm on my bedside clock suddenly started a nerve grating bleep bleep bleeeeeep. An alarm kicking off at 2.30 in the afternoon is ever so slightly puzzling, but even more puzzling, was the fact that I have never set or used the alarm on this bedside timepiece. I tend to have a reliable internal clock that alerts me in plenty of time if we have to be at Alicante airport at half past stupid in the morning several hours too early most of the time, but hey it works. But if I’m honest, I do not use this particular alarm mostly because the tiny lettering on the controls is so

faint that not even with the aid of binoculars can I decipher the instructions, which includes how to turn the thing off. I switched all the switches and knobbed all the knobs. I banged the top and turned

it upside down, but nothing I did silenced that infernal bleeping sound that was reminiscent of finger nails being dragged across a blackboard. Then ker-ching! All I had to do was unplug it

from the wall and problem solved right? Nope. The bleeping continued unabated. It must have a battery backup I thought, but having located the battery compartment and extracted the single

AAA, the damn thing still continued its caterwauling. Was this some sort of unholy revenge for daring to write about black magic the week before? It simply defied the laws of physics. So I did the logical thing; I went downstairs and made a pot of tea in the hope that after half an hour it would have exhausted itself into silence. But no such luck. Then just as I was considering drowning the damn thing in the toilet, I put the contraption to my ear and only then did I realise that in fact the alarm was not from my clock at all, but the small travel one that my wife had been messing around with earlier, and was sitting on her bedside table opposite. I’m much calmer now and the Princess says that the nice white van with the pretty coloured stripes down the side will be arriving shortly. Sarcasm is so unattractive.

“They” and “we” verb forms We took a big step in our last lesson, because we found out how to form sentences in the third person singular, that is “he” or “she” forms, and found that this really wasn’t too painful! So we have “tiene” (he/she has), “vive” (he/she lives) “habla” (he/she speaks) and so on. I can now tell you something else equally painless which I think will also have you jumping for joy. There is a tremendously simple way of making these same sentences refer to “they”. All you have to do is add one letter, this time the letter “n” to the singular form. So therefore we now have “tienen” (they have) “viven” (they live) “hablan” (they speak). As English speakers we naturally tend to think that an “s” should be involved in a plural, but with verbs, this is not the case. We have actually dealt with four, out of the six, verb forms in the present tense. We haven’t explained all the whys and wherefores in a lot of detail, but we have made some big strides as far as getting the general gist is concerned. I find that many people at this stage are particularly keen to find out how to say “we”. Now this is slightly less straightforward in that we can’t always build it directly on to what we already know. On the other hand, it is what a lot of people need, so I’ve decided

to take an overall look at it. We refer to “we” as “first person plural”, in other words “we” really means more than one “I”. (I wouldn’t think about this too deeply if I were you, just accept it!) Now let’s look at the actual word that translates “we”, in other words the plural of yo. This word is nosotros. It is a bit of a mouthful I’m afraid, so I do apologise on behalf of the Spanish language, but it isn’t actually difficult to pronounce or anything. But that is not all! Nosotros has a feminine form which is nosotras. We use nosotros when the “we” are all male or male and female mixed, whereas we use nosotras only when all the members of “we” are female. This means that men never use the word nosotras (just think about that one) and if you are heterosexual couple talking about yourselves you also will always use nosotros. So would all male gay couples – I’m not sure why I’m going down this road – let’s get back to the Spanish. Something else we can rely on (and let’s face it, you can’t rely on much in this world) is that in the present tense all “we” verb forms end in “-mos” Time for some examples which will hopefully put us all out of our misery.

I know that these are just a few examples, but they give us a clue of the thousand more that exist, so I hope they are enough to be going on with. So finally, just to get this back into focus and in the unlikely event that I might have confused you – how does this fit in with the word nosotros? Nosotros and nosotras are what we call personal subject pronouns and behave in exactly the same way as yo, tú, él and ella (I, you, he and she), that is, they are basically optional. They are used to be emphatic or express a contrast, but otherwise are not essential to a sentence. However, they are very useful words for language learners because on the spur of the moment you might remember the correct verb form, but you can always make sure they know who you mean by pointing to yourself and your companion and saying nosotros “we”!

The trouble began when my friend Ricardo used Facebook to ask whether anyone had a DVD player to spare. I swivelled my office chair around to gaze at the enormous wall unit – 4 metres across – that occupies a sizeable part of our lounge. Somewhere, within its many nooks and crannies, I knew I had “plumbed in” a DVD player that became redundant when I bought a far better one that sits under the base of our TV. But where was it? Ten minutes later I found it buried beneath a collection of books and DVDs in a cubbyhole, and I tried to slide it out. It wouldn’t budge. Exploring the area behind it with my fingers, I realised that four cables were making it immovable. What were the cables attached to? I hadn’t the foggiest notion. The only way to find out was to move the entire unit away from the wall – no mean feat as it weighs a ton and I was alone in the apartment at the time. Common sense told me to wait for my husband Marcus’ return from a night on the tiles. But impatience – a characteristic of mine – insisted that I should attempt to shift it on my own. This was at one o’clock in the morning. By 1.15 am I had shifted it enough to expose a veritable bolognaise of wires

TIED UP: Barry tackles the wires and cables plugged into at least three extensions leads and four adapters. I could see that three of the cables of the old player led to the TV, but could not, for the life of me, see where the power cable led to. The only thing to do, I decided, was to start yanking out all the power plugs I could lay my hands on. Naturally, it was the very last plug I pulled that allowed me to slide the old DVD player out.

By the time I’d got all the wires untangled and plugged back in, it was 2.30 am and I was not in the best of moods. The following day I messaged Ricardo to tell him that he could have the thing. “Oh thanks,” he replied, “but someone’s already given me one.” You’d think that that by now someone would have come up with a way of combining yards of separate wires into a single cable. But no. If you’re not connected via Bluetooth or Wifi, you’re

stuck with connections that go all the way back to the invention of electricity. Ten years ago, in a bid to be free of at least one cable, I bought an early generation wireless printer, and spent hours trying to get it to "speak" to my iMac. I kept getting a “cannot find printer” message. Exasperated to the point of madness, I pointed the screen at the printer and screamed “There it is, you &%@£* moron!” To my astonishment, a “found printer” message then popped up on my screen, so I typed an exceedingly rude limerick and hit the print button. Nothing happened. I then bashed out a string of swear words that would make a fishwife turn crimson, and hit the print button again. And again nothing happened. I gave up and went to bed seething. The following morning I bumped into my next-door neighbour who was biting her lip and looking anxious. “I think I’ve got a poltergeist,” she said. I lifted a quizzical eyebrow. “At around 2 am,” she explained, “I heard a noise and when I checked I saw that new my printer had come to life and spewed out a string of the filthiest words I’d ever read.” “That’s weird,” I replied, adding, “Oh, is that the time? I’ve got a bus to catch.”

You’re paying how much for your QROPS?? by

Many of you will have read my recent article regarding financial advisors in Spain charging substantially more than the equivalent service in the UK. In just the last few days I have had several people come to my office to see if I can help them reduce the fees they’re paying on their QROPS. I saw a lady on Tuesday, we’ll call her Sandra (as before, I’ve changed her name to protect her privacy). The first thing Sandra explained was that every few months her advisor would hand her another wad of pages covered in numbers, charts etc., bamboozle her with complex terminology, and she’d leave the appointment none the wiser as to why her QROPS hadn’t grown over the last 4 years. Well, finally she was sat in front of someone who would break it all down for her. The first thing I noticed was that she was paying over £1000 a year for the QROPS alone – this is more than double she would pay for a UK SIPP (a UK based, FCA regulated pension that would offer all the

major benefits of a QROPS and that she could easily move to). I also questioned the fees on the funds she had been moved into, which were between 1.5%-2% per year – this is 3 to 4 times more than I’d expect a client to pay for a top performing UK fund, yet she was paying this for pretty average performing funds that I’d never even heard off (and that’s after 15 years of studying funds on a daily basis!). In addition, she was paying another 1.5% per year in combined fees to her advisor and bond provider. When we broke it all down, her annual fees were over 4% of the total amount she had invested, and I calculated that around 3% of this was going to her financial advisor each year, most of which was in hidden fees which would be illegal in the UK. I was astounded by the combined level of fees here, and it’s safe to say, so was Sandra! The investment returns were barely covering her fees, which is why Sandra had seen no growth after 4 years. My advice to Sandra was that we move her QROPS to a UK SIPP,

which offers all the freedoms and flexibility she needs for less than half the price of a QROPS, and we would then rebalance her portfolio with FCA regulated funds, at a fraction of the cost of the offshore funds she had been recommended. This would bring her annual costs down to less than half of her existing arrangement, which will have a positive effect on the growth of her plan. The exact overall fees paid will depend on the specific situation so may vary, but Chorus pride ourselves on fair, transparent and above all, value for money fees. BBVA partners with Telefonica

BBVA recently signed a global strategic agreement with Telefonica that will allow the bank to optimise its communications, increase the capacity of its technological network and facilitate operations in the “cloud.” The move adds to the series of alliances that the Group is making with strategic partners, in order to become a more flexible and scalable digital bank. BBVA CEO Carlos Torres Vila and Telefonica COO Angel Vila Boix signed the agreement in Madrid. “Communication and technology are key levers for BBVA as we progress in our transformation process, in order to offer our clients digital products and services that will help them reach their goals. This agreement with Telefonica reinforces our strategy of becoming the bank with the best solutions for making a positive impact on peoples’ lives,” said Vila. Boix added: “BBVA is an international

benchmark in digital transformation in its sector and we are very pleased to collaborate in this process as a strategic partner. Laid off BANCO SANTANDER plans to lay off more than 1,500 employees due to the integration of Banco Popular, which it acquired in June after EU authorities ordered its rescue, the Comisiones Obreras union said on Wednesday. Santander, which took on more than 11,000 employees from Banco Popular, is expected to cut staff at both lenders’ corporate centres to lower costs, its chief executive Jose Antonio Alvarez said in October. Comisiones Obreras wants the bank to find jobs for 575 of the employees at the company’s other units.

When Santander acquired Banco Popular, it said it expected restructuring costs of around €1.3 billion related to the deal. In its third-quarter results last month, Santander took a €300 million hit due to one-off restructuring costs but said it was not expecting further charges this year. Much like its competitors, Banco Santander is struggling to lift earnings from loans in Spain as interest rates hover at historic lows, while increasing competition consumes margins. As a result, Spanish banks have been cutting costs,

including through branch closures, since the 2012 financial crisis which ate into earnings and pushed some into state bailouts. Their profits have since recovered, but Spain still has the highest number of branches per person of any country in the European Union, according to recent data from the Bank of Spain. Spain had 62 branches per 100,000 adults at the end of June 2017, data from the Bank of Spain showed. Santander and Popular employ around 7,000 staff at its corporate centres in Madrid.

From Del Boy to Granville, Pop Larkin to Frost, David Jason takes us behind the scenes and under the skins of some of the nation’s best loved characters. Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Giving up on an unloved career as an electrician, he turned his attention to acting and soon, through a natural talent for making people laugh, found himself

working with the leading lights of British comedy in the 1960s and '70s. Among others, David worked alongside Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Bob Monkhouse and, of course, Ronnie Barker. Barker would become a mentor to David, leading to hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours. It wasn’t until 1981, kitted out with a sheepskin jacket, a flat cap, and a clapped-out Reliant Regal, that David found the part that would capture the nation’s hearts: the beloved Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter in Only Fools and Horses.

It’s only natural… KATHRYN KERR will host a demonstration for The Marina Alta Floral Club – ‘It’s Only Natural’ - next Thursday November 16 at the Salon de Actos, La Senieta, Moraira. A lifetime of art is being donated to local charities on the Costa Blanca

Race Night raises over €1,500 An impressive €1,567 was raised at Jalon Valley A.R.C.’s Charity Race Night at El Cid Bar, Restaurant & Bowls in Benidoleig last Friday. The shelter expresses its greatest thanks to everyone who sponsored horses and races, purchased tickets and raffle tickets and bet on races: “The reaction from people following the Charity Race Night has been wonderful and all who came had a great evening, with many shouting themselves ‘horse’ (excuse the pun) trying to encourage their animal to romp home in first place.

Jayne, Matt and Sally worked so hard to make the evening such a great success and hopefully can make this an annual event. Many thanks must go to the race sponsors - La Solana Kennels, David Kent Removals, Premier Properties, Renderking Builders, El Cid and Jalon Valley Real Estate. Special thanks to El Cid for their hospitality and to all those who donated raffle prizes. Unfortunately, even though the facility does have studios for the residents there is limited space for all her paintings and ceramics, so she is gifting many of them to raise money for local charities. More than 100 of her paintings and ceramics will exhibited at Galería Marque, in Jávea’s historic centre. The inauguration will be November 27 at 7pm, to which all are invited. Some selected works will be auctioned, but most will not be priced. Instead, everyone attending will be invited to select a painting or ceramic and make a donation, however big or small, of whatever they think it may be

worth to themselves. All money raised through the sale of the paintings and ceramics will be donated to local charities, including Grant a Wish that does wonderful work in injecting human kindness into the lives of the homeless, the very sick, those who are extremely poor and children or adults in great need on the Costa Blanca. About Billie

Over the course of her career Billie Cook has been an advertising art-buyer, prize-winning macramé artist, silver jewellerymaker, schoolteacher, celebrated ceramic artist, professional photographer and, now, a painter. She took up work as a potter in the 1960’s winning much acclaim, being described as “one of the most promising amateur potters in years”. Her

work was selling up to the equivalent today of £400, and was shown in South London galleries. Modelling stoneware clay over long hours in cold water exasperated the arthritis in her hands, forcing her to look to other means of creative expression. After a short spell as an adult student at Putney Art School Billie decided to continue to paint, but in her own style. She bought a house in Jávea in 1971 and started

to paint more seriously in 1972, influenced by the sunlight and sensations she found in Spain. Her work was first exhibited in 1984 at the Casa de Cultura in Jávea. She also continued with her photography, including as a photojournalist for the prestigious Lookout magazine and providing the photography for two major books about Jávea. RTN enjoyed an evening out at Gata’s Union Musical on Tuesday for the opening night of the Javea Players’ production ‘On Golden Pond’. On Golden Pond is a 1979 play by Ernest Thompson. The plot focuses on aging couple Ethel (Rosemary Brown) and Norman (Mike Martin) Thayer, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond in Maine, New England This year on Golden Pond, the Thayers were blessed with a visit from their adult daughter Chelsea (Leigh Patterson), whom they’d not seen for years together with her fiancé Billy Ray (Nigel Poole) and his son Billy Ray Jr. (Luke Holmes). Chelsea and her entourage arrived partly to celebrate Norman’s birthday, but mainly so she and Billy Ray Snr. could leave the younger Billy on Golden Pond as they spent the summer sailing around Europe. Norman is grumpy at the best of times, fearful he’s losing his faculties, so he was not best pleased at having his holiday disrupted, having to

only a year ago, was keen to seek-out an opportunity to get involved in the local amateur-dramatics scene and said that he’d “never have had the opportunity to play a part like Billy Ray Jr.” in England. Director Ron Skinner told of his fondness for the play and said that “although the play avoids the sentimentality of the film, it instead brings out the humour of everyday human relationships.” The Javea Players take their shows seriously, but ALWAYS with the emphasis on enjoyment and fun. How to get more REM sleep What is REM sleep? Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is a stage of sleep where your brain is very active and prone to dreaming. Having a regular sleep schedule will allow you to experience REM sleep more often, as you will cycle between the stages of sleep several times throughout the night during a full seven to nine-hour sleep. Sarcoma - the unknown cancer

AFTER A summer of healthy eating and exercise, Janice was on the road to better health when she noticed a small lump in her lower left abdomen. She assumed it was scar tissue from a past surgery, but decided to see her doctor six months later after it had grown to the size of a baseball. Shortly after undergoing surgery to remove what her doctors thought was a hernia, Janice found out she had cancer. Specifically, it was a malignant solitary fibrous tumour, a form of soft tissue sarcoma. Janice was 39-years-old when she was diagnosed.

“I had never heard of sarcoma before that day,” said Janice. “The word ‘cancer’ never came up as a possibility in any of my initial conversations with my doctors until I received the diagnosis. I was completely blindsided.” Sarcoma remains an unknown cancer to many. In fact, it is often known as “the forgotten cancer.” Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is among the most distinct and complex types of cancer. It has more than 50 histological subtypes that arise from connective tissues of the body, including muscle, tendons, fat, lymph vessels, blood vessels,

nerves and tissue around joints. The tumours form most often in the arms, legs, chest or abdomen, though they can be found anywhere in the body. Sarcoma is considered a rare disease; it comprises approximately 1 per cent of all adult cancers diagnosed. Given the rarity and complexity of this cancer, diagnosis can be especially challenging. Due to her specific subtype of sarcoma, Janice’s doctors recommended radiation. After seven weeks of treatment and months of recovery, Janice has been in remission since May 2015.

(which encourages REM sleep), and interfere with your body’s internal clock. 3. Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet. Use heavy curtains or shades to block the light from windows. Cover any electronic displays, like TVs or computers so the light does not glow in the room. You can also use a sleep mask to cover your eyes and create a dark space that will help you sleep. If you have difficulty sleeping due to loud noises outside your window or a loud sleep partner, consider investing in good earplugs, or a noise machine. 4. Don’t consume caffeine or alcohol four to six hours before your bedtime. About

half the caffeine you consume at 7.00pm is still in your body at 11.00pm. Alcohol also prevents deep sleep and REM sleep. It will keep you in the lighter stages of sleep, causing you to possibly wake up easily and have a harder time falling back asleep. 5. Try to go to bed sleep 30 minutes earlier than usual. Your REM sleep stages are longer in the morning, so try to prolong your REM sleep by adding an extra 30 minutes of sleep. Adjust your bedtime so you go to sleep 30 minutes earlier than usual and then maintain this adjustment in your sleep schedule by doing this every night.

Midlife crisis or male menopause THE MALE midlife crisis is often made fun of, but for many men it is a distressing experience. A midlife crisis can happen when men think they've reached life's halfway stage and feel time is running out. It's not a medical condition but people going through a midlife crisis can experience anxiety and depression. The age at which people experience a midlife crisis can vary. It can typically occur anywhere between the age of 35 and 50. Dr Derek Milne, a clinical psychologist, says: "If I was giving advice on how to cope, I'd suggest telling your GP you're feeling depressed, because depression makes up a significant portion of the midlife crisis." Depression can be triggered by a major life change, such as divorce, separation, long-term illness, bereavement or job loss. Sometimes there appears to be no obvious reason. Symptoms of depression can include: low mood lasting two weeks or more, not getting any enjoyment out of life, feeling hopeless, feeling tired or lacking energy not being able to concentrate on everyday things like reading the paper or watching television, sleeping more than usual or being unable to sleep When they reach their late 40s to early 50s, some men experience loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, mood swings and other physical or emotional symptoms. Is there such a thing as a 'male menopause'?

The ‘male menopause’ is an unhelpful term sometimes used in the media to explain some of the above symptoms. This label is misleading because it suggests the symptoms are the result of a sudden drop in testosterone in middle age, similar to what occurs in the female menopause. This isn't true. Although testosterone levels fall as men age, the decline is steady – less than 2% a year from around the age of 30-40 – and this is unlikely to cause any problems in itself.

But most people have aging spots, or pigmentation in the skin, and it normally appears after the age of 35. How to Repot Plants Step 1: Water Plant

Lightly water your plant to help the root ball and soil slide more easily out of the pot. Remove your plant from the pot by carefully turning it on its side, then support the main stem in one hand and use the other hand to gently pull the pot away.

Water your newly potted plant well until the water runs out the bottom. I like to sit the plant in the sink or bathtub and give it a good drink, making sure the soil gets evenly moist while the excess water drains away. This is also a good time to spritz or wipe down the foliage to remove dust and potting soil.

When moving your plant to a larger pot, begin by inspecting the roots and soil. If the soil is in good shape, try to disturb it as little as possible. If it’s rotten or moldy, shake away some of the excess. If the roots are tightly coiled, use your fingers or a sharp knife to loosen or gently slice them so they can spread out, trimming away any really long ends. Cut away any rotten or dead roots. When repotting in the same pot, shake off the excess soil, then use scissors to prune back up to 25% of the roots. This will help rejuvenate your plant while keeping it small enough to stay in the same pot.

Step 4: Clean Pot

Clean the pot with hot soapy water to get rid of disease causing microorganisms and insect larvae. Pat dry.

Step 5: Add Soil

Make a small mound of soil in the pot for your plant to sit on. Measure the height and make sure the top of the root ball is at least 1/2″ below the rim of the pot, so that it won’t overflow when you water it.

Sometimes after watering, it’s necessary to add a little more soil to fill in low spots in the pot.

Step 10: Trim Plant

Cut off any dead or broken stems and leaves. If needed, lightly prune your plant to encourage branching.

Step 6: Position Plant

Place the plant in the pot and settle it on the soil. Look at it from all sides to make sure it’s centred and sitting up straight.

Step 7: Fill Pot

Add potting soil around the plant in layers, pressing it down with your fingers until firm. Don’t bury your plant deeper than it was before!

When reversing the wing mirrors automatically drop so that the driver can clearly see the sides of the road behind. There is a useful reversing camera that appears in the centre console. However, this system is not infallible and the driver needs to be extremely alert, especially when reversing on my driveway. Why? Because as you can see in the video there is a brick pillar on the left hand side which can be easily forgotten about, making it an accident waiting to happen. To my surprise there are no warning beeps reminding me of this obstacle and the driver could miss it if they’re not looking at the camera carefully. If the wing mirrors did not automatically drop when reversing this issue could be overcome. Perhaps there is a way to override this setting but I have not discovered it. Overall, I do like this Volvo and feel quite at home behind the wheel. The children like it too and that’s important for a family vehicle.
