Doctor do-good BENIDORM’S City Hall awarded the seventh edition of its ‘Vecino Ejemplar’ (Exemplary Neighbour) award to Dr. Eusebi Chiner I Vives last week. Dr. Chiner heads up the Pneumology Department at the San Juan Hospital in Alicante and expressed his greatest thanks for the award before adding: "Benidorm is a shining example of coexistence,". The award-winner has described the city as a place where "free time coexists with the hard work of its neighbours.” Dr. Chiner is also a professor in the Department of Medicine at the Miguel Hernández University, a researcher and a citizen very personally linked to the traditions of Benidorm.

Deadly disease continues to spread

by Rose Holmes The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed a new case of Xylella fastidiosa on the Marina Alta. The disease has been found to have infected four almond tree plots in Benissa – three in la partida de Pinos and another in Berdica. Benissa Councillor Domenec Miralles, visited the infected fields earlier this week and stressed that the spread of the disease is "worrisome, both by the devastating effect of the

bacteria on the tree and by the visual effect it causes across agricultural plots.” In September, the European Commission said in a statement that Spain is “losing the battle” against the disease that is “officially out of control” Xylella Fastidiosa is one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide, causing a variety of diseases, with huge economic impact for agriculture. It was previously confined to Guadalest, where emergency action has been taken, but it then

BENISSA: Where Xylella fastidiosa has now spread spread to 26 almond orchards in Balls in El Comtat and Alcalali before making its way to Benissa. The current protocol, in line with European Union regulations, dictates that a plant found to be infected by Xylella fastidiosa should be eradicated, along with all plants within 100 metres of it, even if they are not infected: “Strict eradication measures apply, consisting in a clear cut of all host plants of the specific subspecies of Xylella fastidiosa, irrespective of their health status, in a radius of 100 m around the infected plants.” The European Union recogn-

ises these regulations impact on the local agro-economy: “Although these measures impact on the local agro-economy, they are needed in the interest of the Union as whole in order to preserve EU agriculture, as well as public and private gardens.” Regional Councillor of Environment Elena Cebrian has met with the mayors of the affected villages in order to try and calm local farmers and put compensation plans in place. She did however confirm that biologists have not as yet identified which insect species is carrying the disease to new areas.

by Fabio Delucci A 26-year-old man was arrested after going on a rampage at the health centre in Calpe - destroying equipment, fixtures and fittings and attacking a doctor. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the detainee – who is known in Calpe for his violent outbursts - arrived at the health centre with another young man. He had quarrelled with the young man outside a nightclub on La Fossa beach and

bit his ear, leaving a large wound. He then convinced his victim to go to the health centre with him to receive medical attention. Appearing at the entrance of the health centre, the detainee did not ring the doorbell, instead forcing open the door and shouting for medical attention. Staff at the health centre told the Spanish press he was “totally out of control.” He began to break everything he found in his path - destroying computers and phones and breaking the glass door of the emergency room.

Denia mayor says goodbye to dad ON MONDAY, family and friends of Sebastia Grimalt Garces - father of Denia Mayor Vicent Grimalt – said their goodbyes as he passed away peacefully at Hospital Marina Salud de Denia. 91-year-old Sebastia had been in hospital for a few days before his death. He was well-known in Denia and was the first of the Grimalts to try his hand at local politics – he was a socialist councillor under Denia Mayor Jaume Sendra between 1983 – 1987. R.I.P. Sebastia.

Man arrested after trashing health centre and attacking doctor

CALPE HEALTH CENTRE: The detainee forced open the door One of the doctors at the health centre tried to stop the detainee, but he attacked him and fractured one of his elbows. Staff at the health centre said the doctor also suffered a fracture to his other arm.

A nurse at the health centre ran to the police station some 100 metres away and the police arrived at the scene and arrested him. The detainee remains in custody under psychiatric supervision.

Pay up A SPANISH RESTAURATEUR is on trial at Alicante Provincial Court in connection to non-payment of charges linked to his restaurant in Benidorm. The accused is claimed to owe over €20,000 in management charges

after the restaurant - located on Levante promenade - was abruptly closed in April 2016.Speaking to the Spanish press, the restaurateur opposed the claims, maintaining that he has no debts and "everything was

paid." The trial of the accused - who owns several restaurants all over Spain - has caused a stir amongst legal professionals in the province and is yet to reach a verdict at the time of printing.

More security measures introduced MEASURES to increase security have been introduced on the Levante promenade in Benidorm, including various traffic restrictions. The restrictions came into force late last week on Avenida Alcoy, between Avenida Bilbao and Avenida Europa. Vehicles are prohibited from accessing certain areas and must instead reroute via Calle Mallorca and Calle Murcia. These measures come after, in light of, the terrorist attacks in Barcelona in August. Huge ‘anti-terrorism plant pots’ were strategically placed at entrances to plazas and streets where large numbers of people congregate.

A different type of bank IN its bid to encourage owners of abandoned agricultural land to lease it to a third party, Teulada-Moraira’s Department of Environment recently presented its ‘BANCO DE TIERRAS’ (land bank) initiative. The Department of Environment hopes to mitigate the problem of abandoned agricultural land and at the same time preserve old customs and educate the younger generation on the traditional ways of farming. In the medium/ long term the land bank will help to solve agri-environmental problems such as abandoned agricultural land, erosion, the dispersion of plagues and rodents as well as the danger of fires. The project will also play a role in maintaining the traditional agricultural aspect of the municipality. Anybody interested in leasing or renting land should contact the Department of Environment at Teulada-Moraira Town Hall for more information.

Jalon against bullies JALON COUNCIL has joined the project ‘No mas vidas robadas ni personas anuladas’ (No more stolen lives or people excluded) – a programme to prevent bullying and cyberbullying, launched by the Alicante Province Department of Education. The project was born in April 2016 by Oscar Sanchez Ruiz of Elche’s Local Police force.

Oscar has fostered the programme entirely altruistically, in his own time with his own means and has toured the province’s municipalities raising awareness of bullying and cyberbullying, at the hands of which more and more young people are suffering. Alicante Province Councillor for Education Jana

Gonzalez said: "It is important to provide both young people and their parents with the information and tools necessary to recognise and prevent cases of cyberbullying." She said the programme is part of a set of strategic actions to promote respect and nonviolence both at school and at home.

ALICANTE’S Provincial Council recently unveiled a new €240,000 well – Corralet II – in Benigembla. The well will ensure the supply of water in the municipality and neighbouring Benissa and Senija, where residents have faced restrictions for several hours each day during the high summer seasons. The well will pump a maximum of 100 litres per second at peak times however it has been ecologically built to operate at a reduced

capacity at off-peak times. President of the Diputacion Cesar Sanchez said the well "is very important for the people of Benigembla, Benissa and Senija - especially for farmers in the area who will now be able to water their fields safely.” He added that the well also provides reassurance to the tourism sector, bringing an end to the droughts suffered in previous years, especially during the high summer seasons. The two wells will form part of a series of €2 million worth of actions approved by the provincial government as they invest to ensure the supply of water - €800,000 is being spent to fix leaks in Beniarbeig, Benimeli, Gata de Gorgos, Jalon and Lliber and €140,000 is being spent to expand the Parcent plant that services Alcalali, Jalon and Lliber.

IN A meeting earlier this week, President of hotel association HOSBEC Toni Mayor encouraged the building of more towers blocks in Benidorm, saying that the capital of the Costa Blanca must maintain its “commitment to skyscrapers.” Mayor also called for the "urgent" revision of Benidorm’s General Plan for Urban Development, "which has been exhausted for a long time.” He defended the

tourism sector, which he said, "cannot be delocalised," continuing to say it cannot "replaced by multinational giants like Amazon." He gave the overnight collapse of Britain’s longest-surviving airline, Monarch - which left all flights grounded with 110,000 passengers abroad as an example in that Monarch’s services were soon replaced by other companies with little to no effect to tourism.

Arsonists arrested POLICE IN GANDIA have arrested two men as alleged perpetrators of two arson attacks in the Beniopa neighbourhood. The men – both Spanish, aged 19 and 35 – are said to be members of one of the gypsy families involved in the fight in Gandia last month that left one person dead and four people in hospital. Both fires were started within days of each other – in empty houses belonging to the opposing gypsy family. The police think the perpetrators burnt the buildings down as revenge on behalf of their deceased family member. The police think the men are also behind the torching of a car in Beniopa that happened in the same week.

Local town a nightmare to navigate A RECENT diagnosis detected endless architectural barriers in areas of Ondara. The diagnosis was commissioned by the Town Hall as part of its Municipal Accessibility Plan. A local architect studied four areas in the town and assessed the ease of access for people with mobility conditions. The areas studied were as

follows: 1. From the Les Marjals building on Calle Mestre Serrano, passing through Calle Manuel Sanchis Guarner, the park on Avenida de L'Oest, Calle Pintor Murillo and calle Ramón y Cajal, until you reach the Sanchis Guarner building. 2. From calle Lepanto, where the Sanchis Guarner building and the school is located, down calle Denia, turning down Calle Alfatares until

Ronda de la Generalitat and the Plaza del Convent. 3. Calle Denia itself. 4. From the Les Marjals building on Calle Mestre Serrano, towards calle Hernan Cortes, through Calle Salvador Cabrera until calle Ramon y Cajal. Amongst many issues, architectural barriers such as narrow pavements, poorly located pedestrian crossings and uneven

kerbs were identified. The local architect noted that steps lack signalling bands for the blind and waste bins were poorly located on pavements making access difficult for people with mobility conditions. Ondara Town Council will use the diagnosis as part of its Municipal Accessibility Plan to improve access for all throughout the municipality.

Improving access on the country lanes Teulada-Moraira councillor Raul Llobell went to see for himself how the municipal clearing of the country lanes is going. The council will clear 52 country lanes - especially the gutters – to improve accessibility. THREE PEOPLE were injured in an accident involving four cars on the Gandia ring road. The accident led to nearly three kilometres of traffic backing up at 8.00am rush hour as the emergency services attended to the injured. An 85-year-old man suffered multiple traumata, a 33-year-old man

suffered several injuries as well as severe bruising and a 29-year-old woman suffered cervical whiplash. The injured were taken by ambulance to Hospital Comarcal Francesc De Borja in Gandia. The cause of the accident is still being investigated at the time of printing.

Street torched four times

IN THE past few weeks, firefighters in l’Alfas del Pi have been called out to control arson attacks on calle Gregal no less than four times. Calle Gregal is a street of uninhabited, new-build houses and in each case, furnishings inside the properties such as doors and sofas have been set alight. As well as arson, the houses on Calle Gregal have fallen victim to vandalism – elements such as cables, windows and doors have been taken from the properties. The investigation continues.

by Fabio Delucci MORE THAN 800 people took to the streets of Calpe last Sunday in the ‘Marcha Rosa’ (Pink March) against breast cancer. The march was organised by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and Calpe’s Department of

Health and bore the slogan ‘Sumate al Rosa’(Join the Pink). All participants wore the commemorative pink t-shirt, some going all out with accessories including tuts and deely-boppers as they marched from plaza del Mosquit through the streets to the Paradero de Ifac before returning to plaza Colon where a manifesto was read.

The only other candidate for the position, Mayor of Elda Ruben Alfaro decided not to present his candidacy, making Chulvi the only runner in the race. Chulvi, who became mayor in 2011, has long

supported the PSPV and has an excellent working relationship with President of the Generalitat Ximo Puig. It is not the first time that he has been encouraged to stand for General Secretary, the first being in 2012 with the support of Leire Pajin, but Chulvi decided to focus his efforts in Javea and David Cerdan was elected.

STOP members congregated peacefully, in another bid for the politicians to review the use of bulls in the town’s annual Bous a la Mar event. A short manifesto was read in Spanish, Valencian and English as STOP members held banners and signs: “From STOP Bous a la Mar: We denounce the continuous animal abuse that the council here allows, failing their own bylaws and ignoring the general guidelines on animal welfare established by the European Commission.

We ask the government in Denia to review the 'Bous a la Mar' fiesta, where bulls and cows suffer year after year and even sometimes die. A ‘party’ in which the animals are chased through the streets, surrounded by people and tricked in to falling into the sea. It has been proven by several specialists that the animals suffer, both in the activity itself and during transportation. We will not let the politicians in this town forget their responsibilities, we will peacefully remind them that bulls and cows are suffering year after year. Denia is actively investing money and efforts in this poor excuse for a fiesta, which tarnishes the reputation of this city. This is why and until Denia stops mistreating the animals: STOP Bous a la Mar!”

Cemetery gets makeover BENIDORM’S Urban Scene Advisory Council has given the go ahead for a €210,000 project to open up the space next to the Virgen del Sufragio cemetery. The plot, which was home to a fast food restaurant demolished a few months ago, will be transformed to “open the cemetery to the city.” The project, drafted by municipal architects Jose Manuel Escobedo and Rafael Landete, provides a “space of transition”, with gardens and a new entrance to the cemetery. Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez expressed his greatest thanks to Escobedo and Landete and confirmed the project will form part of the city’s 2018 budget.

Cultural cluster MUNICIPAL WORKS to refurbish a nineteenth century house on Denia’s calle Sant Josep were resumed this week after coming to a halt in June due to discrepancies. The house will be refurbished and transformed into a €1.5m cultural centre with a new municipal library of nearly 700 square metres. Some of

the hallways will also be used for exhibitions and there will be a small assembly hall for conferences and presentations. Denia Council plans to create a “cultural cluster” in the town’s historic centre – once works on Calle Sant Josep are finished, the Casa de la Marquesa on Calle Cavallers will be also refurbished.

23 STUDENT NURSES arrived at Hospital Marina Salud de Denia this week on internships. The students will complete a 62-day internship – a rotation of three 20day assignments in different departments of the hospital. Denia’s Department of Health has training agreements with several centres across the Alicante Province and Valencia and every year welcomes many interns to Hospital Marina Salud de Denia to train and support them in their studies. The students who arrived this week come from centres in Javea and Gandia.

Pedestrianisation dilemma by Rose Holmes FIGURES have been released from a survey carried out on Denia’s Calle Marques de Campo as to whether or not it should be pedestrianised. The survey was commissioned by the Town Hall and carried out on the town’s main street between April 3 and April 4, coinciding with the Holy Week holiday. In total, 51.6 per cent of respondents said that it should not be pedestri-

anised, whilst 48.4 per cent supported cutting vehicular access. Those who said calle Marques de Campo should not be pedestrianised were asked why - 38 per cent cited work reasons, 34 per cent because “there is not enough parking”, 22 per cent said it was “not necessary” and 6 per cent liked to be able to park up and quickly nip into one of the shops. Of the respondents, 67.74 per cent live in Denia, whilst 20.9 per cent were tourists and 11.29 per cent live in neigh-

bouring municipalities. Amongst those who live in Denia, 54.76 per cent were against the pedestrianisation whilst 45.24 were in favour of it. Itzel Rivas said on local Facebook group ‘Denia Connect’: “We used to live on calle Marques de Campo and loved it when it was pedestrianised. It should stay like that all-year round. There's plenty of parking in nearby areas and the on-street parking just causes traffic.” What do you think?

SEVERAL members of the Board of the Masonic Homes of Valencia were recently invited to the Autumn Fiesta of the ISVH Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcon Al Mar in Javea. The volunteer fire service is based at Balcon al Mar and the board members visited to check out the new equipment purchased from the donations made to the firefighters by the Masonic Homes of Valencia, following the fires of last September. A lot of the firefighters’ equipment was lost or badly damaged in the fires and needed replacing. Board members were shown around the fire

station and firefighters demonstrated the new equipment, including the new fire engine. Bridging the gap The first 3D-printed concrete bridge has been completed in the Netherlands as a crossing for cyclists. The 8-metre long bridge is made from pre-fabricated concrete blocks which took robots 3 months to 3D-print. Any old onions? There’s lots going on in the Grant a Wish boutique in the Plaza de la Constitution in Javea. If you drop in on a Monday you’ll be invited for a coffee and you can find out more about what this exceptional charity does for both individuals and organisations. On Thursdays, in addition to our usual stock of good new and used clothing, jewellery, books, CDs and greetings cards, you may find some bags of onions and packs of rice and pasta! Here’s how it works… We’re a sociable crowd, and our volunteers come from several countries so we speak quite a few languages. Between us we run the boutique to raise funds which help support our causes. We’re all busy people and most of us pop back to our home countries from time to time so we’re always delighted to meet more people who might be able to help in the boutique, or at one of our events from time to time. If that might be you, please come in for a coffee and a chat on any Monday between 9.30am and 1.30pm. On Thursdays we’re asking you to add a few items to your supermarket basket and bring to our fruit and veg shop. The stalls are exactly outside our shop so could you add a few items to your shopping and drop them in to us. We ask you this because amongst many other causes, we support a men’s shelter in Gandia. Every week, our volunteers buy, collect and deliver foodstuffs and toiletries without which the shelter could not properly function. The men there depend on the donations

Could you, or a business you work for, donate, or even sponsor on a weekly basis, some of the essential foodstuffs, kitchen items and toiletries the men’s shelter needs? Or how about rice, dried macaroni, vegetable oil, carrots, onions, tomatoes, jars of lentils, Coca Cola, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, shower gel – or boiled sweets! Any of these will be so gratefully welcomed. On Thursdays – market day – when you’re doing your shopping, could you perhaps put an extra pack of rice or macaroni in your supermarket trolley, or buy an extra kilo or two of onions, tomatoes or carrots the shelter needs? No need to carry them far - you can drop them into the shop. Our volunteers load up their cars and deliver them to Gandia every Friday. The boutique is open from 9.30am – 1.30pm and you will be very welcome. As a charity we try to help as many people as we can. If we can find additional support for some of our existing projects – such as the men’s refuge – we can help others, such as our exciting new project enabling riding for the disabled pupils of Raquel Paya school in Denia at the Lledò stables in La Xara. Freemasons donate clothes and shoes to children in need by Tahnee Wright WBro Keith Alcock, the Provincial Charity Steward of Valencia recently visited Gandia Preventorio Children’s Home to deliver several sacksful of clothes and shoes to the children. The Preventorio receives no government funding and operates entirely thanks to grants and donations. Caring for over fifty children ranging in

age from three to fourteen, is no easy matter. The children wear out and grow out of clothes and shoes at an alarming rate. It is a never-ending battle to keep them well clothed and shod. The Preventorio has been supported by various local Lodges over the past few years and now, the Provincial Grand Lodge has also stepped in to help out as much as possible. Earlier in the year they sponsored a large group of children to visit the Masonic summer school in Guadalest. The children who attended had a magical time being both educated and entertained. The Provincial Grand Lodge has now designated El Preventorio as one of its chosen charities for this year. At the recent Provincial Ladies Night, over €1,600 was raised which will also go to the home. On a local level, the home has been supported by, amongst others, White River Lodge, Arenal Deportiva Lodge and Oliva La Safor Lodge. The donation of clothes and shoes was made by White River Lodge and also John Harvey in Quesada. The Provincial Grand Lodge expresses its greatest thanks to Silvia Barnish who acts as its liaison with the Preventorio, as well as acting as translator where required. Car Insurance – Points Recovery Course Spanish points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. If no traffic offences are committed after 3 years drivers receive an additional 3 points. A point is awarded every subsequent 3-year period up to a maximum of 15 points. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a reeducation course of 12 hours or a 24 hour course if drivers have lost all their points. Once the course is passed successfully drivers are awarded 8 points on their licence.

How are points deducted? Drivers will lose 6 points if under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other illegal substances. Reckless driving, refusing to take a breathalysing test or drugs test, driving over 50% of the speed limit. And drivers will lose 4 points for putting other drivers at risk, throwing objects on the road that could cause accidents or fire, exceeding limits by over 40kph, endangering cyclists, illegally parking, exceeding maximum passenger capacity by 50%. Driving without a seat belt, using a mobile phone and not keeping a safe driving distance will result in a 3 point fine.

What is covered? Under Línea Directa’s Traffic Fine Handling service, the policy holder or owner of the insured vehicle as well as any other drivers legally entitled to drive the vehicle can benefit up to a maximum of €500 of the cost of traffic re-education and awareness course, as well as the fees payable in connection with the driving licence recovery test.

Many young Catalonians have become more and more angry with President Puigdemont failing to call the vote on democracy, this may endanger his position and his party which would suit Rajoy, on the other hand Rajoy position could also be challenged by the Popular party for failing to take action against Catalonia sooner, is it because of the financial support Spain receives from that region? Well! all that changed, Puigdemont

did play his card, and told Catalonia that they now were an Independent Region from Madrid, immediately Rajoy played his trump card asking his parliament to vote, this they did and as expected they voted to take over the governing of Catalonia, removing Puigdemont and his government. Is that the end, now the dust has settled I do hope so, with all my heart, without the hundreds of deaths as the Spanish people over the years have suffered enough, and that the people of Catalonia accept the penalty decision, and direct rule, and don’t take to the street having strikes, and causing disruption. It was a political football game between Barcelona and Madrid, a game of two halves, I do hope that there will be no extra time when one of the two teams try to score again, in the December elections? Now full time it should be called a draw for peace sake, with one man sent off, ex-Catalonian President Puigdemont, after a yellow, then a red card, (also the colours of Spain). The man of the match I suppose you could say, was Prime Minister Rajoy. For me it was a nerve twitching spectacle.

However, Mugabe is no better at running a country than William Hague is at running Britain’s foreign policy. Zimbabwe, which until Pigminster’s betrayal boasted a world-class economy, is now destitute. On a par with the Horn of Africa, Zimbabweans today starve in what was once the bread basket of the Dark Continent. Rewind: Zimbabwe is now begging many of the 4,000 European farmers they forcibly evicted to return and reclaim their farms. This move comes fifteen years after the Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwean government seized large swathes of the farmers legitimately acquired and nurtured ranches. Before 1979 these prosperous farmlands provided a surplus of wealth, food and employment opportunities. The only problem was the influx of Africa’s non-Rhodesians desperate for a slice of the cake. The evictions and slaying of ethnic-European farmers and their families led to an exodus – and famine. If this reversal of hapless UK foreign policy is the success I suggest it can be, I would further suggest that renaissance Rhodesia doesn’t appoint William Hague, First Lord of Richmond, as their Minister of Finance.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t get this obsession with the whole Halloween thing. My first experience of this weird festival was in Philadelphia in the early seventies, before it was exported on leathery bat wings from America to British shores. Mini Draculas, wolf men and zombies arrived at the house throughout the evening, demanding treats which were kept in readiness in a bowl by the front door. However, I never discovered what the consequences would be if candy was not forthcoming. Regarded as All Saints Day in the Christian calendar, All Hallows Eve is steeped in the pagan belief that the spirits of the dead re-visit the living, and if offerings are not made, then all sorts of dire consequences are forthcoming in the form of extreme bad luck.

Hence trick or treat. Admittedly there are other interpretations on offer, but the fact remains that its origins are preChristian and a belief that every October 31st, spirits of the dead walk the Earth. I’m a fun loving sort of bloke and at the risk of sounding stuffy, I don’t see how this sits easy with the church, especially when you consider that October 31st ranks second only in importance to April 30th, or Walpurgisnacht as it is also known, in the Satanist calendar. Yes but these devil worshippers are just a lot of loonies looking for an excuse to get their kit off and have a party. Aren’t they? The vast majority perhaps, but a frightening personal experience in 1971 brought home to me in no uncertain terms, that a small but influential hardcore

element exists that carries out unholy rites under cover of the generally held belief that Devil worship is just a load of hokum, and merely an excuse to indulge in a bit of harmless fun. I do not intend describing my own experience, but it coincided with a time when I met a man who had been a war time colleague and was still a close friend of the author Dennis Wheatley. He assured me that the warning Wheatley gives as a preface to all of his books on occultism is heartfelt and a result of meticulous research and experience, and not a marketing ploy. In essence the author warns his readers “most strongly” that to be drawn into what he terms The Secret Art would bring them into dangers of a very real and concrete nature. Superstitious nonsense? Maybe. But it should at least give pause for thought.

Changing from “you” to “he or she” sentences (2) In our last lesson we started to look at how we change verbs to refer to “he” or “she”, in other words to put them into the “third person singular” form. Having established that in all verbs except one we do this by dropping the letter “s” from the end of second person singular (you) form, we can now go back once more to some previous verbs and see how this works in practice. Let’s look at our original expressions of intention, obligation and need, for example. Vas a – you are going to Va a – he or she is going to Puedes – you can Puede – he or she can Quieres – you want Quiere – he or she wants Prefieres – you prefer Prefiere – he or she prefers. You can see clearly from these examples that all that is required is the dropping of the letter “s” to make this change from second to third person, and that is true of

every single verb in Spanish in the present tense with only one exception, as I mentioned, which is the verb SER (to be). This is an irregular verb and changes from eres (you are) to es (he or she is). I’m now going to state the obvious yet again, because sometimes it is the obvious that we don’t think about! When we are forming a sentence in the third person we are suddenly at liberty to name the subject of the sentence in a way we cannot do with the first and second person. To explain what I mean in English, a first person sentence can only start with “I” and the second person sentence can only start with “you”. In Spanish, as we know, these words yo and tú are optional extras. However, when we come to the third person, we can use “he” or “she” or many other possible subjects – my husband, your friend, the teacher, Mr. Smith, that man over there, the person who lives in that house, Mary, Bill, my cat – I think you’re getting the idea. So, without further ado, let’s see what new sentences we can form – there are of course thousands of them! Mi marido va a trabajar mañana. Tu amiga puede pasar cuando quiere. (Here the verb pasar means “to call in”) El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre.

El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado. Remember as well we can form our negatives and our questions from these very easily. Mi marido no va a trabajar mañana. Tu amiga no puede pasar cuando quiere. ¿El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre? ¿El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado? Notice in particular the way we would translate these last two sentences. In English they would start with “Does” – “Does the teacher want to speak to your mother?” “Does Mr. Smith prefer to eat fish?” These words such as “do” and “does” when forming questions are called “auxiliary verbs” and only exist in English. In Spanish they are not needed. When we are forming simple closed (yes/no) question, we simply make a statement sound like a question with our voice and write it with the upside down question mark. In other words, it is as though we were saying: “The teacher wants to speak to your mother?” “Mr. Smith prefers to eat fish?” It is noticeable as well that some Spanish people speak English in this way, translating directly from their own language, which is actually a lot more straightforward anyway!

On Tuesday November 7, Javea Social Centre will play host to Javea Book Circle and distinguished poet Robert Archer as he reads from his recent bilingual poetry collection The Naming of Birds /El Nombre de los Pajaros, with translations by the distinguished Spanish poet Guillermo Carnero. This is the first time this academic and scholar Robert has collected any of his work as a poet and the collection is published by the important poetry journal 21 veintiunversos of Valencia. Robert Archer has a long standing connection to the regions of Catalunya and Valencia, teaching and researching on medieval and “Golden Age” Spanish and Catalan/ Valencian literature in London, England and Melbourne, Australia. In recognition of his scholarship, he was elected a member of the Real Academia de Buenas Letras de Barcelona and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and he is a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. At the Book Circle meeting, poems from the collection will be read in both English and Valencian and a discussion

What exactly happened with Continental Wealth Management?

A couple more weeks have passed since the devastating revelations regarding the collapse of CWM, and as each day passes, more people are discovering they themselves were victims.

I’m sure many in my industry would like to brush this under the carpet, and remove it from the public interest, but we must learn lessons from this, and as an industry, we must educate the public to ensure what happened CANNOT happen again. We are not yet fully aware of the numbers, but early data is showing that as many as 40% of CWM’s 900 clients were affected by this. All of these clients were in a type of overseas pension called a QROPS. I have written extensively in the past as to why Chorus warns extra due diligence with regards moving your pension to a QROPS. With a competent and ethical financial advisor, a QROPS may be a suitable consideration for those looking to transfer their pensions, but ensure you receive properly licensed and qualified advice, as there are also options available where you can leave your pension in the UK with similar benefits. Sadly, QROPS can also be open to abuse, as it is able to hold complex and often high-risk investments that are not suitable for nonprofessional investors. The CWM losses were all caused by one particular type of product called a ‘structured note’. Notes vary in terms of their level of risk, and in this case incredibly high-risk notes were used. The best way to explain why these notes were so high risk is to compare them to an industry standard multi-asset investment fund. A well-balanced portfolio should consist of a number of well-known, long established, multi-asset funds, managed by household names such as The Prudential, Investec, HSBC, Fidelity, Rathbones, Legal and

General, Blackrock etc. Each of these funds will have diversification criteria set out by their regulator (in the case of Chorus, we only recommend UK FCA regulated funds, unless our clients specifically request otherwise, which is usually only the case with experienced investor clients). A diverse fund will hold a mix of assets such as shares, property, fixed interest securities and cash deposits. Within each of these types, there will be many different holdings. These are exactly the same funds that would be used by financial advisors in the UK for their investment and pension clients. In practical terms this should mean that an individual holding represents a tiny fraction of the overall portfolio, so no single asset can add unnecessary risk to the portfolio. Rather than using a number of highly regulated multiasset funds, the CWM advisors were being paid high commissions (something else I warn about in regularly in my articles) to recommend a product that could literally fail based on the performance of a single holding. These products are wrapped up and sold in a way that can, on the surface, make them look low risk, but they also clearly state on the literature ‘For Professional Investors Only’. What happened to the victims of CWM would be impossible in a correctly structured portfolio, which is why week after week in my articles and radio interviews I try to spread this essential message. Financial advisors in Spain are still selling structured notes, and indeed certain non-FCA regulated funds, that are paying them commissions to recommend them. This practise is illegal in the UK, but currently the only way we can stop it happening in Spain is through education. There is a way to approach investing in a prudent and

secure manner, and you should never be afraid to ask your advisor very detailed questions before signing any paperwork. If you have doubts or feel certain questions are being avoided, then perhaps it would be better to seek advice elsewhere. What the victims of CWM are going through right now is devastating, and the actions of those advisors is simply unforgivable. Mr Blanco, I have signed a "deposit contract" to buy a house in Denia (I am English). I wanted to know if the money I have given goes to the real estate agent or to the seller and what guarantees do I have that they will sell the house to me? Mr Williams Thank you for your email. Your question refers to the “contrato de arras“ or deposit agreement in the sale of a property, and refers to the amount of money paid in advance to the signing of the Escritura. When the private contract of purchase is signed, you have signed a contract with two different agreements on it: the agreement of purchase “acuerdo de compraventa” and the deposit

agreement “acuerdo de arras”. Any amount that the buyer delivers to the real estate agency in the form of a deposit must be destined to the seller, and the agency may only have these amounts for the sole purpose of depositary and always being authorized by the seller to receive them on their behalf (Notarial power). It is highly recommended to ask for a certificate from the bank account holder. There are three different types of deposit agreement, otherwise known as Acuerdo de Arras 1: CONFIRMATORY Arras (arras confirmatorias). The Supreme Court has established that Confirmatory arras are those aimed at reinforcing the existence

of the contract by constituting a signal or proof of its execution. If you sign this type of deposit you will receive the same amount delivered plus any damages for cancelling. If the buyer decides not to buy he will lose the deposit. 2: ARRAS AS DAMAGES COMPENSATION (arras penales). The difference in this case is that the economic compensation has already been established in the contract and it will be the amount given as “arras”. For normal is the double of the deposit amount. 3: CANCELLING ARRAS (arras penitenciarias). The “arras penitenciaries” is a legal way to break the contract.art 1454 CC.

The most common, the difference with the previous two other types of arras is that if the seller decides not to sell, he will have to return to the purchaser the deposit amount paid as arras and pay again the same amount as a penalty; if the buyer decides not to buy, then he loses the amount paid as deposit / arras. The indispensable requirements for the application of arras Penitentials are: - There must be a contract and an agreement between the parties. - That one of the parts rescinds the contract. BBQ Cauliflower & Chickpea Tacos with a Creamy Lime Slaw Ingredients 1 head of cauliflower 1¼ cup of cooked chickpeas 1 teaspoon olive oil 10-12 corn tortillas sliced jalapenos, if desired

Twice baked potatoes A great side dish for entertaining, these mitt–warming potatoes can be made sev-

eral hours or even a day in advance. After filling, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Try a variation with mushrooms and truffle oil or chives. DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake the potatoes directly on the oven rack until tender, about 1 – 1 1/4 hours. Cool 15 minutes. 2. Laying the potatoes on their sides, cut off the top 4 and reserve, and gently scoop out the flesh with a spoon, leaving 1/4” thick shells. 3. Force the scooped flesh through a ricer, or mash with a masher in a mixing bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, and gently mix with a fork or a wooden spoon. Taste to adjust the seasonings. 4. Spoon the filling back into the potato skins, and dot with butter. Replace the cut–off tops and gently wrap with aluminium foil in a way that signals the right–side up. Place on upper rack of a pre–heated barbecue and bake until heated through and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes. 5. If made ahead and refrigerated, bake for 35–40 minutes. 6. To Serve: Open foil, discard tops and garnish with a little extra grated cheddar and crumbled bacon.

BBQ Rub: 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon coconut sugar ½ teaspoon smoked paprika ¼ teaspoon black pepper Creamy Lime Slaw: 1 14 ounce bag of cole slaw mix or 6 - 7 cups of thinly chopped cabbage and carrots A scant ½ cup of veganasie, or mayonnaise ½ teaspoon dijon mustard ½ teaspoon maple syrup 1½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar ¼ teaspoon celery salt 1 pinch black pepper 1 teaspoon water Juice of one lime Instructions 1. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Make the slaw: In a medium sized bowl add all of the slaw

dressing ingredients. Mix ingredients together until a creamy sauce has formed. In a large bowl, add the cabbage mixture and pour dressing over. Mix until everything is combined. Place in the refrigerator until ready to use. 3. In a small bowl or jar, add all of the BBQ rub ingredients and mix together. 4. Separate all of the cauliflower florets and chop them into bite size pieces. Place florets and chickpeas onto a large sheetpan and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with BBQ rub. Depending on the size of your head of cauliflower you may not need to use all the rub. Toss everything together with your hands so that cauliflower and chickpeas are coated with the rub. Place the sheetpan in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, flipping once. 5. If desired, warm up corn tortillas on the stove or in the oven. Add about ¼ cup of cauliflower and chickpeas to each taco and top with a few tablespoons of slaw. Top with sliced jalapenos if desired. 6. Enjoy! Sciatica – it gets on your nerves SCIATICA is the name given to any sort of pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. The severest pain of sciatica is usually felt in the buttocks and legs, and most people find it goes away naturally within a few weeks, although some cases can last for a year or more. Symptoms When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain; numbness; a tingling sensation that radiates from your lower back and travels down one of your legs to your foot and toes, and weakness in the calf muscles or the muscles that move the foot and ankle. The pain can range from being mild to very painful, and may be made worse by sneezing, coughing or sitting for a long period of time. While people with sciatica can also have general back pain, the pain associated with sciatica usually affects the buttocks and legs much more than the back. See your doctor if your symptoms are severe, persistent or getting worse over time. Your doctor can usually confirm a diagnosis of sciatica based on your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment . Causes In the vast majority of cases sciatica is caused by a slipped disc. A slipped disc occurs when one of the discs that sit between the bones of the spine (the vertebrae) is

damaged and presses on the nerves. It's not always clear what causes the damage, although as you get older your discs become less flexible and more likely to rupture. Treatment Most cases of sciatica pass in around six weeks without the need for treatment. A combination of things you can do at home – such as taking anti-inflammatory painkillers for any back pain, staying active and exercising, and using hot or cold packs – may help reduce the symptoms until the condition improves.

Beauty tips Bye, blisters! As the winter weather draws in, save your soles from blisters in your new boots or party shoes with a green tea home remedy. Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties that aid healing. First, brew three tea bags in boiling water, then toss in a teaspoon of baking soda (for its antiseptic properties). Allow the brew to cool, then soak your blister in it. You can use gauze to apply the home remedy to the area if the blister is in an area too difficult to soak. Also, if your blister hasn't popped, you can speed up the healing process by soaking it in warm water to help it soften up and drain the fluid inside. Organic papaya mask Many exfoliants contain abrasive ingredients that scratch your skin which can damage your skin and speed aging. Instead, it’s better to use an enzymatic exfoliant. Papaya contains the natural enzyme papain and pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps naturally exfoliate the skin, leaving it smooth and soft. Greener (unripe) papayas have higher amounts of papain, so opt for these to get the best exfoliation. If you have sensitive skin, use

ripe papayas because they’re less likely to trigger an inflammatory reaction. Scoop out a ¼ cup raw papaya flesh, mash or blend with 1 tablespoon fresh pineapple until smooth. Apply to your dry face and leave on for 5 to 15 minutes. Then rinse with cool water. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test on your arm before applying to face. The alpha hydroxy acids and the enzymes in this recipe dissolve dry, dead skin. You only need to do this once or twice per week.

African mango A natural way of controlling weight. The fruit of African mango (Gabonensis Irvingia) is native to Western Africa, especially to Cameroon. Natives have used it traditionally with healing purposes, apart from being a food sta¬ple. The difference between African mango and other types of mangos lies in its seed. African mango’s seeds are rich in protein and beneficial substances for health. The seed extract of the African mango referred to as IGOB131 is particularly interesting. Several studies about this extract have proved its efficiency in weight control, particularly in overweight people. The success of African mango in weight control is due to its content in leptin and in adiponectin. Leptin plays an important role in regulating appetite. It is produced mostly by fat cells. When the storage of fat increases, leptin is released, sending a satiety signal to the hypothalamus, who at its turn interprets that there is a sufficient energy reserve, so appetite needs to decrease. The problem of many overweight people is that they have a resistance to leptin, so their appetite or feeling of hunger does not decrease. It is believed that the extract of African mango seed acts against this resistance, thus reducing the feeling of hunger to normal levels. The action of African mango as inhibitor of the resistance to

leptin is the key to reduce body fat. Adiponectin works inversely to leptin. The thinner a person is, the larger amount of adiponectin is released by that body. Adiponectin plays an important role in the metabolism of glucose and fatty acids. It is known that levels of adiponectin in the human body are inversely proportional to the Body Mass Index (BMI), that is, to body fat. This is why the concentrations of adiponectin are reduced in cases of obesity or diabetes. The function of adiponectin is to maintain the sensitivity of cells to insulin and glucose. This control is an important achievement when it comes to fighting diabetes and obesity and speeding the consumption of energy, glucose, and fat. African mango increases the levels of adiponectin and it is estimated that this fact has an impact on the weight reduction process. African mango is also efficient for expanding

the body’s capacity to burn fat and for controlling cholesterol, according to research carried out by American specialists in nutrition and dietetics. That’s according to researchers who looked at the way circadian rhythm - the body’s internal clock - affects the outcomes of a patient recovering from a complex heart procedure. In the subsequent 500 days after surgery, researchers found, those patients who were operated on in the afternoon had half the risk of a major cardiac event - for instance myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, or death - as those who underwent surgery before then. The team also conducted a randomised controlled trial of 88 different patients who underwent the same surgery, half in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. They found that

afternoon surgeries resulted in lower levels of myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury - tissue damage that occurs when blood flows again through the repaired portion of the heart - than did morning surgeries. Experts say that sort of heart tissue injury can lead to higher risk of short- and long-term mortality. University of Lille-France professor David Montaigne, the study’s lead author, suggested that the study’s findings indicate that scheduling changes could decrease injury or death. “There are few other surgical options to reduce the risk of post-surgery heart damage, meaning new techniques to protect patients are needed,” Montaigne said in a statement. “Our findings suggest this is because part of the biological mechanism behind the damage is affected by a person’s circadian clock and the underlying genes that control it.” The findings are the latest in a growing body of evidence suggesting that time of day plays an important role in how well various medical treatments work. Studies show that the efficacy of some vaccines and cancer treatments may be affected by the time of day when a therapy is administered or medicine is taken. For example, research has found that patients who received a seasonal flu vaccination before 11.00am produced more antibodies than those who received a vaccination after 3.00pm.

Ultimate stain-removal guide Because saving your favourite clothes is always worth the extra elbow grease! • Dye stains: Fresh dye stains are the easiest to remove but very hard to get out once they've set in. If possible, right when the stain happens, run it under cold water and then wash it on the hottest possible setting for the fabric. Dye stains are naturally occurring vegetable dyes found in many plants and acidic foods. If you can't get the stain out yourself, try the dry cleaner. These same cleaning methods should work for coffee, tea and ink stains — which are also dye stains. • Protein stains: Organic in nature, protein stains include things like vomit, sweat and blood. Treat them with alkaline stain removal solutions, which will digest the proteins. Enzyme pre-soak products can break down protein and help dissolve fats. Most detergents contain enzymes and can be used to clean protein stains. • Combination stains: Combination stains are stains from things like sauces (barbecue sauce, ketchup, hot sauce), makeup (lipstick, foundation, eye shadow) and crayons. They are a

combination of the other types of stains. First, rinse off any excess from the stain with cold water. Gently rub a detergent into the stain. Rinse out the detergent, apply a stain stick and wash. • Ice cream and other dairy product stains: Dairy stains are protein stains because they are organic in nature (i.e., from an animal). Fresh stains should be soaked and agitated in cold water before washing. If the

stain has dried, scrape or brush off any crusted matter. Soak for up to several hours in cold water with a detergent or an enzyme pre-soak (which breaks down protein-based stains like egg, grass and blood so your detergent can work more effectively). Wash in warm water. If the stain remains, soak for an additional 30 minutes and rewash. If a coloured stain remains, launder with a bleach safe for the fabric.

• Fruit and fruit juice stains: Fruit stains are a dye stain. Launder with detergent in the hottest water safe for the fabric. Do not use soap (bar, flake or detergents containing natural soap) since soap-based products could make the stain permanent. Soak tough stains for 30 minutes in 1 litre of warm water and 1 teaspoon of enzyme pre-soak product. Removal of old or set stains may require washing with bleach that

is safe for that particular fabric. If all the sugars are not removed, a brown stain will appear when the cloth is heated in the dryer or is ironed as the sugar is caramelized. This effect is great for crème brûlée... not so wonderful for your favourite white blouse. • Coffee stains: A coffee stain is a dye stain, but the cream or milk in the coffee is a protein. Therefore, you will want to treat the stain as both if you like a little cream in your morning brew. If the stain is fresh, immediately rinse with cold water. If you are at home (or once at home), remove the clothing and add laundry detergent directly to the stain and rub the cloth together with cold water. Soak in the water for 30 minutes, rubbing the cloth together every five to 10 minutes. Next, wash clothing on the hottest setting. Ensure the stain is out of the clothing prior to placing in the dryer. If the stain has not been removed, try repeating the steps. For older stains, apply white vinegar directly to the stain and mix with cold water. Rub stain with a sponge until removed. You may also use baking soda as an alternative solution, applying with a wet cloth to scrub away the stain.

Why do cats scratch in the house?

Some cats may tear chair arms with their claws, scratch patches of wallpaper off the wall or shred carpets. Most cats do not cause this type of damage, so why do others feel the need to behave like this in our homes? Scratching has several functions – one of the most important being to keep a cat’s hunting weapons sharp. Scratching also leaves scent marks in a territory. Secretions of watery sweat from between the cat’s pads leave a scent message in addition to the physical marks. Cats usually scratch outdoors, choosing trees or posts. Wood is just the right texture to allow claws to dig in and be drawn down, pulling off the old claw sheath to reveal the sharp point of the new one. If you look at a regular scratching place you will find these pieces of sheath embedded in the surface.

Exercising the claws Indoor cats with no access outdoors still need to perform this natural behaviour. If nothing suitable is provided, they find something in the house that has an appropriate surface. In the wild, a cat’s claws are an excellent climbing aid as well as a hunting tool. Keeping them sharp is obviously essential but this can cause a problem if it is undertaken indoors instead of out.

THE council of ministers have approved a Royal Decree that amends certain requirements and regulations in respect of the Spanish MOT (ITV).

Until now, if a vehicle failed an inspection it was mandatory to return to the same inspection station for the second test within a maximum period of one month. The new regulation now permits the vehicles to

For those vehicles that pass the ITV test, the mandatory date for the next revision will not be changed if the vehicle passes the inspection in advance, provided it’s not more than one month in advance. That

means that, for example, if the ITV expires on a vehicle in January 2018 and you pass the test in December 2017, the next date will be January 2019. If you were to take the same vehicle in November 2017, it will expire in November 2018. The Royal Decree also forces all ITV stations to have the

correct diagnostic tools that connect with the on-board computers that many vehicles approaching their first ITV inspections now have. This will allow detailed inspections of the electronic security systems to check they are functioning correctly as well as improved controls of emissions.

changed partners and the next two sets went the way of JITC. Buena Vista made a late comeback by winning the fifth and sixth sets but it was too late and JITC won the match four sets to two. JITC’s Andre Trublet said afterwards, “the opposition made it hard for us but our team played consistently. We’re very pleased to get such a good start to the season,”

Javea’s Council of Sports will welcome applications from local athletes for sponsorship until Wednesday November 22. Councillor Vicent Colomer presented the sponsorship initiative, which has a total budget of €12,000. Sponsored athletes will receive funds to go towards expenses such as training and entry to competitions. Javea athletes aged between 9 and 35 who have belonged to a local club for at least two
