Annual flu jab campaign launched by Glenn Scott
TORREVIEJA Health Department has launched this year’s winter anti-flu vaccination campaign which lasts from now until January 31. In the previous years, it has supplied up to 28,000 flu jabs covering the area from Pilar de la Horadada in the south to Rojales in the north, with more than 70 per cent of those going to the over 64 age group. Residents covered by Torrevieja – and in other municipalities across the Vega Baja – can get their annual vaccinations at health centres and local clinics and many will be notified by post that their jab is due, although the advice is always to go the arrange an appointment and don’t wait to be invited. José Tuells, head of preventive medicine, explained the importance of having the vaccination every year. “Since the composition of
the dose varies according to the different strains of flu as notified by the WHO (World Health Organisation), the fact that someone was immune to flu in 2016 doesn’t mean they will be this year.” Influenza is a very contagious condition and can, in some cases even result in death. The annual flu jab is particularly recommended for people at high risk of developing complications after catching the virus and includes adults over the age of 60 and those with chronic conditions. Those suffering from cardiac or respiratory diseases, pregnant woman and those that are morbidly obese are most at risk from catching the flu, as well as health workers, emergency service personnel and care workers who are likely to come into regular contact with members of the public. People directly exposed to birds or pigs on farms are also on the high risk list.

by Glenn Scott AFTER months of build up, the former Spanish King Juan Carlos I formally started the 2017 Volvo Ocean Race from Alicante. An estimated 100,000 people filled every single vantage point to see the Emeritus King lead the formal farewell ceremony for the ships that are off on their around the world race on Sunday afternoon, with Lisbon in Portugal
being the first port of call. This is the fourth time in a row that Alicante has been selected as the start of the prestigious Volvo Ocean Race and is due to host the next two in 2020 and 2023. This occasion was the first time that the former Spanish monarch has been present at the start, and was accompanied by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, and the mayor of Alicante Gabriel Echávarri. The Race Village first opened its
doors to visitors on October 11, and during the 12 days between opening and the departure of the race on Sunday, an estimated 400,000 people had passed through the village in the port. The area only has a capacity for 12,000 at any one time and was forced to temporarily close its doors at least three times during the opening period due to the excess numbers wanting to enjoy the experience and patiently queuing.

TORREVIEJA town hall has signed a contract with a specialist company to reduce the number of pigeons, doves and other birds in the urban area. A budget of €6,000 allows professional people to move numbers of the species to other areas without resorting to destroying them. It’s not only the habits of pigeons and doves that have caused complaints from locals but hens and roosters that have moved from their original habitats in the parks to other locations. This action has been taken in response to a number of customers complaining about the increasing number of birds scavenging and snatching food from outside tables.

Free bus pass deadline for students
STUDENTS under the age of 26 and living in Elche have until Tuesday October 31 to request an extension to their free bus pass. The Bus Lliure operating in the municipality has collaborated with the town hall to help students who come from families that don’t reach a specified level of income. Councillor Esther Díez said: “This initiative has a double function. Residents to decide the fate of €50,000 of their money by Ray Chadwick THE MUNICIPALITY of San Javier has allocated a significant sum of its 2018 annual budget to projects that will be decided by the residents. Councillor for citizen participation, Catalina Pérez, and the coun-
cillor for finance Carlos Albaladejo announced the initiative after a recent meeting and said that an amount of €50,000 would be set aside for the suggestions and that the process is already open. Pérez explained that locals over the age of 16 can already submit, until November 5, a maximum of
three proposals on how they would spend the €50,000. They can place their ideas via the municipality’s website or in special post boxes that will be located in the town hall and in the SAC (Citizen Assistance Service) in Santiago de la Ribera. After the closing date, officials will evaluate both the sustainabil-
ity and feasibility of the proposals which will then be published and open for public voting on Friday November 24 via the same methods as the submissions. Residents can cast their vote for up to three of the final proposals and the eventual winner will end up having the €50,000 council investment.
A YOUNG motorbike rider was seriously injured and taken to the Elche General Hospital following a freak accident in the municipality. According to witnesses the motorbike rider allegedly attempted to overtake a vehicle on the inside and entered a bus lane without noticing that ahead of him was breakdown truck with the back ramp down. He ended up driving up the steep ramp of the stationary vehicle at speed and collided with the cab at the front of the ten metre long truck.

The seminar was organised by the Valencian Public Security and Emergencies Institute (IVASPE) in Villena and was attended by interested parties from across Spain. There were more than 100 police officers, personnel and council officials
that are directly associated with the subject under debate, where the discussion concentrated on how they can cope and deal with the growing number of reports of incidents of animals being abused or abandoned. Councillor Morate explained that the conference was addressed by experts who set out the present European and Spanish regulations concerned with owning and maltreating of animals. These included the rules on importing animals – especially horses – and the provisional disciplinary
Positive trend in freelance registrations continue THE REGION of Murcia is showing a positive increase in the number of people registering for Social Security payments via the Spanish autonomo (freelance and self-employed) system. Figures for the month of September just released show an increase of 721 – an average of 24 new registrations per day – and taking the overall number to 96,532. Murcia’s rise of 0.75 per cent is only just behind that of Madrid and compares favourably to the 0.42 per cent increase across Spain

Islanders suffer from coffin fit PEOPLE strolling around the Tabarca Island were shocked as they stumbled across a coffin in one of the small coves. The more than surrealistic image of a coffin on the beach was a talking point among locals and visitors alike and gave rise to all kinds of reasons why and what it was doing there. Many passers-by stayed well clear from the coffin but many others were seen taking photographs of it and even having the ever present selfie while sat next to it. The answer the mystery is quite simple and not at all sinister. The coffin is being used as one of the props during the filming of ‘Fishbone’ which is currently being shot almost entirely on location on Tabarca Island.
Car park blaze close to airport A FIRE that broke out in grounds opposite the Alicante-Elche Airport burned out six vehicles and damaged three others close to a busy car rental park in Torrelano. The alarm was raised around 2.30pm on Monday afternoon and two units from the Elche Fire Department were sent to the scene. No injuries were reported but the damage to the cars was devastating as it appears the original fire began in one car that quickly moved along the line and affected the rest. The intervention of the fire brigade prevented the blaze spreading to dozens of more parked cars. The reasons for the fire are being investigated and arson isn’t being ruled out.
Mistake admitted in fake kidnapping attempt ALARM was spread among residents and visitors to the Playa San Juan area of Alicante following a social media alert about the kidnapping of young girl. The warning spread like wildfire via the WhatsApp messaging service and across social media after the father of the young girl said that his young daughter had suffered an attempted abduction in the Fontana Commercial Centre. The audio message sent on WhatsApp said that his daughter had entered a lottery office with
her grandmother and while she was checking her tickets, someone tried to take the girl. When the grandmother noticed her granddaughter was missing she left the office and found the youngster running back to her while the other woman, the alleged kidnapper, was walking away from the scene. However, once he’d seen a recording on a security camera and witnessed what had really happened, he quickly made an apology via a new audio message and admitted a misunderstanding.
The video showed that the grandmother and the girl went into the lottery office and while she was at the counter the granddaughter confused another woman with her grandmother and left the lottery office with her. Just a few metres away, when the woman notices she had the little girl with her she told her to go back from where she came where she can be seen running back in and being reunited with her grandmother.

Two children saved in one day LOCAL POLICE officers based in Orihuela had to rescue a toddler who had caught his hand in a lift. The incident happened in a building in the Ocarasa area of Orhuela and emergency services responded to the alarm being raised at 4pm. At the scene, they discovered a two-yearold boy who was trapped and needed to use a crowbar to free him from his ordeal. After his release, paramedics treated the patient at the scene that was later taken to the Vega Baja Hospital where he had minor contusions and a few cuts dressed. At almost the same time, a fast intervention from the same local police force is believed to have saved the life of a four-year-old girl. The young girl was out enjoying the day with her parents in the street when all of a sudden she suffered difficulty in breathing and went into convulsions. The parents managed to catch the attention of a passing police car, and they quickly bundled the girl into the back of the vehicle and rushed her to the nearest health

FAST ACTION: Two children end up in hospital after separate incidents centre. This enabled her to be stabilised until an SAMU emergency ambulance arrived to transfer her to the Vega Baja Hospital. The medical team at the hospital praised the actions of
NATIONAL POLICE based in Alicante have arrested two men for attempting to rob a house in Vistahermosa. The two arrested suspects – aged 48 and 51 – were caught in the act inside the property having forced the security grills covering a window to gain access to the house. The alarm had been set off in the process and had alerted the emergency police response team who arrived at the house. When police officers got to the scene, they noticed that there were
signs that the suspected robbers could still be inside the property so they gained access, where they discovered two men with partially covered faces and wearing hats and gloves hoping to leave no trace of their crimes. They were caught in the act of placing a number of items into a black plastic sack, as well as placing a television set close to an open window with the aim of removing it just as they were leaving the premises. The rapid intervention of the police put pay to all their plans.

Tractor driver killed on his farm
A 36-YEAR-OLD man was killed after getting trapped under the tractor he was driving. Emergency services received a 112 call just before 10am with reports of the incident saying that the driver was trapped and was possibly dead
already after the accident at a farm in a finca on Castillo de Chuecos. The site was blocked off by the Guardia Civil, and firefighters arriving on the scene with the help of paramedics attempted to rescue the man and save his life...but the tractor
driver was declared dead at the scene. The incident has been reported to Murcia region health and safety authorities and they and the police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Car airbags trap crash driver
FIREFIGHTERS based in Almoradí have rescued a man trapped in his car following a crash in Rojales. The driver was trapped between his car’s airbags that had activated after his vehicle collided with another that was parked on the hard shoulder on the CV-905 near to the Euromarina Hotel on Ciudad Quesada for reasons that are still being investigated. The attending firefighters used special equipment that helped them to remove the backseat and then take the
injured driver out through the hatchback. He suffered fractures to his ribs and one of his arms and was taken to the University Hospital in Torrevieja. The accident temporarily interrupted the flow of traffic in both lanes of the dual carriageway in the Torrevieja direction of the CV-905, and caused delays to those accessing the road from the nearby AP-7 Alicante to Cartagena motorway and from local roads from Rojales and Benijófar.

by Glenn Scott THE JUSTICE department in Elche has been revealed to be the busiest in the Alicante province. Figures recently released show that they are dealing with 241 cases per month and this saturation of work and the resultant backlog has caused severe delays into investigations and consequently has seriously affected the entire judicial process. An extra eighth court for the area has been announced but no start date has been announced although permission for a seventh court was given in 2010 and this has yet to begin its proceedings.
‘Police cars’ in suspected arson attack
Members of the Elche Bar Association – from judges, prosecutors, barristers and solicitors – have denounced the virtual collapse in the judicial system throughout the Comunidad Valenciana but particularly in the city of Elche where figures indicate that is the locality with the most work and highest delays. One of the consequences of the delays is the length of the sentences handed down by judges. When the judicial process has been delayed for reasons beyond the control of the individual on trial, the eventual penalty can be significantly reduced and leaves the complainants and victims of crime feeling that justice hasn’t been served.

NO JUSTICE: Elche overwhelmed with the amount of legal cases
POLICE are investigating how and why three of their private cars were set on fire when they were parked outside the town hall in Playa Flamenca. They discovered the crime when they finished their shifts and went to get into their vehicles to go home. Local police sources have said they’re completely certain that the cars were set on fire deliberately as two of them were close to each other in the town hall car park and the third in a different location. All of the police officers affected were away on night duty at the time of the attacks.
Gender violence data released DURING the first six months of the year, 130 new cases of gender violence were reported in Murcia. The data was released during a meeting chaired by Councillor Conchita Ruiz where discussions
were had on how to involve as many of the local associations as possible to prevent, deal and respond to the increasing number of cases of violence against women. Analysing the figures, the average age of the
women suffering from this form of abuse is 38, and 65 per cent are Spanish. Overall, 224 women needed assistance following a violent incident with 94 of them having suffered previously.

by Steve Collins NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a number of people – one in Torrevieja for allegedly using voodoo rituals. The gang of three, all from Nigeria, allegedly conned their female victims with offers of work that never existed. The other two suspects were detained in Madrid and in Torija (Guadalajara) and included the gang leader. During the arrests, police were also able to free one of the alleged victims of the crimes. The police statement said that the arrested men had tempted the vulnerable and poor women who lived in
Nigeria with promises of a paradise of well paid employment in Europe. Once they agreed, they were subjected to voodoo rituals where they were forced to swear their loyalty to the men and promised to pay off the expenses incurred for their travel. Failure to do so would result in them and their families left behind in Nigeria suffering torture and even death The women were transported into Spain via Libya and then into Italy which although being the riskiest and cheapest route was the fastest way they could begin working and paying off the debt. To enable the estimated €30,000 of
debt incurred, the women were forced to work as prostitutes every hour of every day and to hand over the money to their controllers. Profits were allegedly sent back to Nigeria to fund future human trafficking and to fund the exorbitant lifestyles the gang members had established for themselves. During a search of a property in Torrevieja, maps, accounts, computer equipment and a number of mobile phones were seized and taken away for analysis. ALICANTE City Council has announced that it will be increasing surveillance and controls to eradicate the illegal sale of plants and flowers in different areas of the city. The announcement was made by Security Councillor Fernando Marcos, after meeting with two representatives of the Association of Florists of Alicante and the Head of the Local Police, Jose Maria Conesa. Representatives of the florists have explained that the illegal sale of plants and flowers is a problem that has been ‘rooted’ in Alicante for more than 30 years. The sector believes that the extra police patrols have seen a noticeable drop in the practice, but with All Saints Day on November 1 and Christmas coming up, they believe that even greater official controls are needed to tackle the problem and ultimately end the unregulated street vending.

by Ray Chadwick YOUNG FARMERS from the ASAJA in Alicante have warned of the consequences of the months of drought conditions and the current short term weather forecast. They have pointed out that they can no longer irrigate their crops and depend on enough rainfall over the next few weeks to avoid “major crop loss and the consequent economic effects”. Much of the problem has been caused by the closure of the Tajo Segura aqueduct in May and with the almost zero prospect of it being reactivated due to the supplying reservoirs being below the minimum transferable, the conditions have reached serious levels.
The farmers have reached a dangerous crossroads that on this occasion, and with severe drought conditions going well into the third year, precipitation is the only answer. “If it doesn’t rain in the next few days, 21,000 hectares of citrus plants and almost 8,000 hectares of general horticulture will be in danger and lead to issues in the food chain and the agricultural industry not only in the Alicante province but across south east Spain.” They added that the current harvests were only possible due to the unseasonal rains of August and September. The president of the ASAJA, Eladio Aniote, said: “We are very worried because we have crops already planted and they and we are at the mercy of

Farmers warn of severe drought conditions

Our only salvation is that it’s started raining in the southeast of the country and filling up some of the reservoirs that might allow the transfers to be reactivated as soon as possible. “We have about a month to save the
good quality oranges and lemons and mandarins that are sold throughout Spain and Europe where our main markets are. Artichokes, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes and lettuces are in danger of being thrown on to rubbish tips if they cannot be saved.”
City centre fire ‘caused by faulty electrics’ FIREFIGHTERS were called to a building in Torrevieja when fire broke out in a second floor flat which was empty at the time. Flames and thick smoke belching from the window alerted neighbours and the alarm was raised. Most of the building’s occupants had left the block of their own accord before the emergency services arrived.
The violent fire broke out at 7am and completely gutted one room of the flat on the block located on Avenida Villa de Madrid on Phase II of Parque de Las Naciones. Nobody was reported injured as a result of the fire. Quick work from the fire brigade prevented the blaze from spreading beyond the main living room but the balcony of the flat above which was also
empty at the time suffered from some damage. The area surrounding the blaze was closed for more than an hour while it was brought under control by firefighters from Torrevieja, Orihuela and Almoradí. Initial investigations into the fire suggest that the cause was due to an electrical fault, but this to be confirmed.
Station looks for new home
AFTER 40 years, Orihuela’s fire station will be leaving its present home in the neighbourhood of San Antón once a new location is found. The reason for the move is to base the station in another area that gives the brigade faster road access to the municipalities throughout the Vega Baja that they serve. When it was first built, it was in the perfect location but today it is surrounded by other buildings – including a school – and the Palmeral de Orihuela that features a sports centre. The prevalence of pedestrians and passing traffic can often make emergency responses difficult when every second counts.

Makeovers for a number of town centre roads THE MUNICIPALITY of San Vicente del Raspeig has allocated a substantial amount to improve several streets in the area. A total of €390,000 has been budgeted to cover the asphalting and the general upgrading of a number of roads, plus the adaptation of a number of connecting roads that currently exist to take the weight of traffic from the main roads. These are used by many of the local residents on a daily basis for their journeys to work and shopping trips, and the works are being carried out in response to a number of requests made to the authorities. The roads that will see the most benefit from the investment are La Baiona Baja, Rabosar and the new road from Busot. The town hall said that whilst the state of the roads is acceptable, they’ve suffered from an amount of wear and tear over a period of time due to their heavy use. The new programme of work will fill in all the potholes and thus reduce the dangers of accidents and make the journey a more comfortable one. The current top surface will be re-

We name this street...after a woman THE LATEST plenary meeting of the Cartagena City Council – under the chairmanship of the acting mayor Juan Pedro Torralba – unanimously approved a joint motion of the PSOE and CTSSP political parties to give priority to using names of women when naming new streets and public spaces. The measure will seek to promote the
role played by women in the history of Cartagena and to alleviate the current lack of female names. At the same time, a new section will appear on the municipality website giving full biographies of the women already having their names displayed and for other women that have played a significant role in the daily life of Cartagena.

Eleven professional drivers fail drug tests by Glenn Scott DURING the course of one week, 11 people who drive for a living failed a drugs test as part of a special campaign aimed at drivers of heavy vehicles. Two others also showed signs of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The tests, undertaken by the Guardia Civil throughout the Murcia region, were set up to detect serious driving violations - apart from those concerned with drugs

A total of 609 professional drivers were tested during the campaign – that included bus drivers – and from the 11 that tested positive for drugs, three were on cocaine and eight on cannabis. They were reported to the provincial traffic headquarters in Murcia and are liable to fines of €1,000 and a loss of six points from their driving license.

WITH the advent of electric trains on the route, the journey time between Murcia and Alicante will only take 25 minutes. Train operators RENFE have announced that they plan to replace the regional trains that currently run between Murcia and Valencia by a fleet of electric vehicles and reduce journey times once the AVE High Speed line comes into force. The Avant Train can reach a maximum speed of 250kph and would reduce the current three hour trip from Murcia to Valencia to only 80 minutes. Part of the reduction of the journey will be due to a reduction in the number of stops to just three stations: Alicante, Elche and Orihuela.
Rubbish bin ‘arsonist’ caught with lighter in hand A 32-year-old resident of Alicante has been arrested in Murcia suspected of being behind a series of rubbish container fires in several streets in the city. The suspect was arrested after Murcia police received a number of calls regarding a fire in Plaz Santa Eulalia, which was becoming dangerous to both parked cars nearby and pedestrians. Firefighters extinguished the fire
within minutes after people working nearby failed to put out the small blaze using buckets of water. Following up a number of witness statements who provided police with a detailed description of the alleged culprit, police searched the area and discovered the man close to another container with a lighter in his hand. Each of the containers is valued at around €1,000.

by Lynn Whittaker REPRESENTATIVES of residents in Gran Alacant have made a series of demands to their local council to improve their neighbourhood. They have asked the municipality of Santa Pola – which includes Gran Alacant – to look at carrying out a number of infrastructure projects on the large urbanisation, with particular emphasis on attending to the needs of the younger locals. These include more ed-
ucational centres, more efficient school transport and spaces for sporting and leisure activities. One of the requests is for a second school since the existing one Vicenta Ruso only has a capacity for 450 students. It is now so oversubscribed that more than 700 pupils attend. In addition, parents and guardians are asking for an increase in the number of places available on school buses for secondary schoolage children that are currently restricted to students on particular courses. They
THE OLD Elche road – that connects to the iconic salt flats in Santa Pola – has deteriorated into a full scale rubbish tip. The path, that goes behind the Rio Safari Park is unrecognisable with piles of household and building rubbish piled up as far as the eye can see and has caused locals to demand immediate action to clean up the mess so people can once again use the right of way as before. The road has long since been closed to traffic but is regularly used by walkers and cyclists alike, although by fewer people since the build up of dumped rubbish reached the current levels. Locals are also asking for greater controls and monitoring of the affected areas to try to catch the people responsible for this damage to the environment.

Estate agents happy with sales growth A REPORT by an estate agents association indicates that sales growth for homes in Murcia is still higher than that across Spain as a whole. According to the Association of Promoters of real estate in the Murcia region (APIRM) between January and July of this year 1,463 homes were sold which was 28 per cent more than the same period last year.
The latest figure significantly tops the 19.3 per cent growth that had already been recorded during the first quarter of the year to the end of April. This signifi-
cant upturn has been put down to the amount of 764 new units being sold in the first seven months and 37 per cent up on 2016.
Green light for business park development ELCHE City Council has given the green light for the construction of a new warehouse unit located on the Torrellano Business Park. Measuring 34,277 square metres, the building will be occupied by shoe manufacturers Tempe who are regarded as being one of most powerful footwear companies that generates
wealth and employment for the locality. A total of 15 new licenses have been granted by the council which include, apart from the Tempe building, the construction of 19 new homes in the Travalón area. Others are related to work on individual homes or refurbishment projects.

A collaboration between the Torrevieja town hall, Joaquín Chapaprieta Municipal Culture Institute and Apymeco, Polígono Casa Grande and Zoa business associations have organised a number of spectacular activities in both Torrevieja and in nearby La Mata on Tuesday October 31. From handing out sweets to children that play trick or treat, to giving out a zombie passport that – should they get enough stamps – the bearer can claim a free gift, more than 50
businesses have signed up to take part in the event that is growing in popularity as the years pass. Free face painting and makeup is available in the Plaza de la Constitución from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and on stage, there will be scary stories from 5.30pm to 6.15pm and again from 6.45pm to 7.30pm. From 6.30pm until 8pm, the grand Halloween Parade sets off from the Plaza de la Constitución and will proceed along Calles Ramón Gallud, Joaquín Chapaprieta, Pedro Lorca, Rambla Juan Mateo, Caballero de Rodas and then back to the Plaza Constitución for a disco until 10.30pm. Many of the local restaurants will be joining in the fun by offering some ‘horrific’ zombie menus; and in La Mata there will be a number of activities including face painting and the chance to pose for photographs

Pink ribbons galore at successful charity race MORE than 1,400 people were registered as taking part in the inaugural ‘Run for me, Orihuela’ event organised by the AECC cancer charity and the Club Atlético Oriol. Participants and spectators alike took part in a number of events to round off Breast Cancer Awareness Week, with the main objective being to increase awareness and supply information about the disease. Volunteers sold a number of items – especially pink ribbons - all in aid of the AECC, who were “very happy and proud to have achieved such a great turnout of people showing their support to so many people that are suffering from breast cancer.”

There’ll be a special tribute to Edu Gomez, a local dog trainer who lost his life as a result of a recent traffic accident, and funds raised by ASPETGA this year will go the Proyecto Cuatro Patas animal sanctuary and will go some way to helping them rebuild after a devastating fire. ASPETGA will also be collecting donations for their pet food bank. Donations of canned and dried food as well as pet supplies such as cat litter, beds, blankets, toys, etc. are very welcome. by Lynn Whittaker LATEST FIGURES show that deaths caused by breast cancer in the Comunidad Valenciana have fallen by more than 18 per cent since the year 2000. Also, the number of people surviving a diagnosis of the disease for more than one year now stands at 96.4 per cent, and backs up the words of experts that stress the importance of early detection of the disease. Specifically, the data shows that deaths have reduced from 28.71 cases per 100,000 women in the year 2000 have reduced to 23.48 cases in 2015, the year when the period of the study ended. In 2015, 3,330 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the Comunidad Valenciana, and accounts for 29.21 per cent of all cancers. Breast cancer can occur at all ages and affect both sexes,

but increase markedly between 45 to 50 and a much higher incidence rate for women between 65 and 69 years old. Councillor Carmen Montón emphasised that the survival rate at one year after diagnosis is at 96.4 per cent and

THE TORREVIEJA U3A group took part in two, rather out of the ordinary, trips during the course of one week. First up was the monthly outing of the lunch club which was held at the famous and popular Monroes Carvery in Moraira where a superb meal with plenty of liquid refreshment was enjoyed by all. The lunch took place after an earlier visit to Benidorm in the morning where the members – mainly the ladies – were able to pick up some bargains in the shops and the weekly market. For some of them, their newly purchased goods came in handy as they were able to change
into their new clothes on board after being drenched in a sudden hail storm which caught some by surprise as they left the restaurant! They may have got a good soaking but it didn’t put a dampener on what was an otherwise successful and enjoyable day. A few days later, the Easy Walking Group went from Santiago de la Ribera to the ferry terminal on the Mar Menor whereupon the walkers were able to test their sea-legs on a trip across to La Manga. Much welcomed visits to the local hostelries on arrival helped in their recovery before returning to their vehicles for the journey home after lunch.

The Russians are coming...for weddings Exports up in August
ACCORDING to data released by the Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX), exports from the Alicante province increased by 3 per cent in August compared to the same point last year. Businesses in the area managed to invoice €349,000,000 for their shipments abroad. Despite these figures being very positive, the fact is that exports from Alicante continue to return data that is lower than the
national average, since the rate of exports across Spain as a whole improved by 9 per cent during August 2017. The sector that showed the most improvement was the recovery in the sales of footwear which in the entire Comunidad Valenciana increased by 6.3 per cent year-on-year to €111.7m. At the other end of the scale were exports in toys. They saw their exports drop by 5.4 per cent in the same time scale.

Halloween – the origins and the traditions HALLOWEEN’S origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honour Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably
explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween. Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition and the return of deceased relatives and friends. For these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world. Today’s Halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. We avoid crossing paths with

A taboo topic is that virtually every slave in the Soviet Gulag was transported by an infrastructure; ships, cattle cars and vehicles, provided by the Western powers. Average life expectancy in the Gulag was 40 days; there were plentiful replacements. Tens of millions of Europeans died. The true figures will never be known as no one then or now is interested in keeping records. Soviet ‘Five Year Plan’ successes were dependent upon captives described by Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky as ‘White Negroes’ . Sub-Saharan Africans plundered and sold other Africans to visiting slave ship owners. Many English exiles, sentenced by the courts for trivial crimes, were sold and bartered en-route by Australia-bound ship-owners to African chiefs. Since biblical times the Arab enslavers of Africa depopulated the coastal regions of Mediterranean Europe. Even England and Ireland were raided to feed the Moors insatiable demand for European slaves. You won’t learn that in your classrooms, nor will you read it in media or see it on your TV screens.
black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. This idea has its roots in the Middle Ages, when many people believed that witches avoided detection by turning themselves into cats. We try not to walk under ladders for the same reason. This superstition may have come from the ancient Egyptians, who believed that triangles were sacred; it also may have something to do with the fact that walking under a leaning ladder tends to be fairly unsafe. And around Halloween, especially, we try to avoid breaking mirrors, stepping on cracks in the road or spilling salt. But what about the Halloween traditions and beliefs that today’s trick-or-treaters have forgotten all about? Many of these obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead. In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl’s future husband. Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night she would dream about her future husband. Other rituals were more competitive. At some Halloween parties, the first guest to find a burr on a chestnut-hunt would be the first to marry; at others, the first successful apple-bobber would be the first down the aisle.

Another taboo topic: Taxes spent on war in the last 10-years alone could have bought every American citizen an idyllic home in an all-facilities garden community. The money spent on just interest payable on warrelated loans would provide every U.S. citizen with a two-month paid vacation every year. Do the math: Total cost of U.S. wars over the last 10 years $6 trillion. The average cost of a small home is $60,000. Number of homes built for $6 trillion 100 million. The insatiable U.S. and EU economies are war economies dominated by Parliaments, Congress, and Pentagon, corporate and banking interests. An uncomfortable truth; a high number of wage slaves are indentured slaves to the banking and political systems. Anyone who hates his work but does so for security is enslaved. He is no different from the galley slave or gladiator who wields the state’s sword or pulls the oar knowing that failure to do so results in work, food and water deprivation.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Changing verbs from second to third person singular We are well on the way to understanding one of the most fundamental things about Spanish verbs and that is that a subtle change of a couple of letters makes a big difference to the meaning. This is so alien to us English speakers and really explains why we develop such a phobia about them. Another reason for our angst about verbs is that unlike the Spanish, who study their own language in a very conventional way at school, most of us have little grounding in English grammar so therefore are at a complete disadvantage if someone starts to teach us Spanish in a grammatical way. And there’s a third reason! When you are born into a particular language community your brain develops according to the language that you are brought up speaking, so trying to convince your brain to put words together differently is a bit like trying to make a computer use a program that it is not designed for. These reflections are supposed to encourage you rather than make you want to give up! It is my belief that if someone really wants to learn and has the language explained to them in a
way they can relate to, then they will slowly grasp it and start to make progress. This requires patience and also a certain amount of self-belief and selfconfidence. If you say you’ll never learn it, you never will. If you are positive and determined to go forward, you will, in your own way and at your own pace. So, the fact is that in English we hardly make any changes to verbs. Take a verb like “play” – it can only change to “plays” “played” and “playing” – that’s it! Any other information we want to communicate, about who plays or when they play, has to be done by adding other words, such as people words: I, you, he, she, we, they and other little words like : do, did, does, will, won’t, be, am, are is etc. So in English we make combinations like: “he plays”, “they will play”, “I have played”, or “she will be playing”. In Spanish we can indicate the same information of who and when by changing the endings of the verbs themselves. Whereas “play” in English only has four possible forms, its equivalent in Spanish will have about 50 variations! But the good news is that we have
already started to see and accept this gradually, as in the course of these articles we have learnt some of these subtle variations. For example we now know all of this about the verb “speak”: hablar (to speak) hablo (I speak), hablas (you speak – informal), habla (you speak – formal). But now to what I promised you for today – how to change verbs so that they mean “he” or “she” does something. This is just so easy! All we have to do is take the informal “you” form and remove the letter “s”. If this operation looks familiar to you it should do, as it is identical to the way we produce the formal “you” or usted version. As usual, some practical examples are needed. Hablo inglés I speak English Hablas inglés You speak English (informal) Habla inglés You speak English (formal) Habla inglés He speaks English, she speaks English. Voy a dormir
I’m going to sleep Vas a dormir You are going to sleep (informal) Va a dormir You are going to sleep (formal) Va a dormir He is going to sleep, she is going to sleep. In the sincere hope that you are still with me and that all this is meaning something – I will now anticipate another question that you might ask, as people often do. If the same form is used to mean “you”, “he” and “she”, then how on earth do we know which one is meant in a sentence? Aha – the answer to this is easy! It is the real life context that tells us. Just as in English, if I say “he speaks English” I assume you know who “he” is, otherwise I would add the person’s name: “Bill speaks English”. Similarly in Spanish, we assume knowledge of the person otherwise we have to add that information: “Bill habla inglés”. If however I am referring to “you” in a polite way and not to a “he” or a “she”, then if necessary I can add the word usted just to make this clear.

Don’t suffer in silence by

Seven years ago, in preparation for my move from the UK to Spain, I so drastically pared down my worldly belongings that, by the end of the exercise, what was left fitted neatly into seven large cardboard boxes. Thus I began my new life on the Costa Blanca with just my favourite cooking utensils, my iMac, some clothes and a lucrative publishing contract with a British company that had agreed to my relocation because everything I did was Internet based. Blue skies and warm weather for most of year, plus financial stability and friendships made in Benidorm during previous holidays to the resort, would, I imagined, ensure a life of pure bliss. Then something went drastically wrong around three years ago. The first warning signs occurred when I suddenly developed chronic depression and a fear of flying. This was followed by a series of crippling panic attacks every time I left my apartment, and, after col-
lapsing in the street one evening, I virtually became a recluse, venturing out only to buy provisions. The agoraphobia had a devastating effect on my work as my contract required me to travel four times a year to London to meet with the company chiefs and discuss future plans. This became such an ordeal that, after excusing myself from several meetings, I was compelled to explain my predicament. Company board members were sympathetic but made clear that it was in my own interests as well as theirs to get myself sorted out. That’s when I splashed out more than £400 on a device that sends electronic pulses to the brain, and is meant to cure post-traumatic stress disorder, which I believed I was suffering. This from The National Institute of Mental Health: “Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event. Some experiences, like the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one, can also cause PTSD. Symptoms usually begin early, within three months of the traumatic incident, but sometimes they begin years afterward. “Symptoms may last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with relationships or work … The course of the illness varies. Some people recover within six months, while others have symptoms that last much longer.
In some people, the condition becomes chronic.” The device helped somewhat but not enough to cure me, and I reluctantly concluded that I would need to consult a psychotherapist. I say reluctantly because I have never been one for discussing my problems with others, always choosing to bottle my emotions. So I sought help from Stephen Ashley, a therapist who holds weekly consultations in Alfaz del Pi and other places too, and quickly came to realise that, while I had settled in Spain with a minimum of physical possessions, I had brought with me a ton of crippling emotional baggage. My first meeting with Stephen took place on September 28, 2016, and by the end of the year I was able, without a trace of anxiety, to board a flight to the UK. I had several more sessions with him, and by March of this year I felt liberated enough to cease treatment. It was with a sadness, though, that I bid Stephen farewell because I went from dreading
our encounters – some of which were extremely taxing – to actively looking forward to them. Regular readers will know that my columns are normally lighthearted observations of life in Spain, but I felt compelled to write this one in the hope that it may help folk who are suffering problems similar to those that turned my life into a living hell. FOR SOME weeks now I have banged on about politics, and politician’s. I must apologise, it must be that I have now become a grumpy old man. However, I want to wave a banner to one of the greatest ideas that anybody has come up with in recent times. The Invictus Games, where men and women who have survived appalling injuries, compete in an Olympic style sports games, these games have become part of their rehabilitation, some have appalling injuries after losing limbs or sight while serving in the armed forces. I want to denounce the British Government for the continued attempt to try to show the rest of the world that we are still a great fighting nation. It has cost us a fortune that we can ill afford, apart from the overseas aid that we have to continue to give to the countries that we have fought in or fight in at this present day. As our young men and women lose their lives and their limbs, in god forbidden places that we should not have been in, in the first place. I applaud Prince Harry for his success in bringing the games into the world spotlight, allowing us mortals to see how great these young people can be even with terrible injuries. I know some Royal Princes can be criticised, after all he was born into royalty. It was not his fault and this young, upright man has succeeded in life in his own way, becoming a soldier and serving in the frontline was his brave choice, he could have joined air miles Andy, his uncle jetting around, winking at pretty girls. No! Harry did his thing and since he left the services he is paying back his colleagues, using his warmth, humour and kindness. It was good to see him re-
cently with his lovely girlfriend Meghan, who I am a great fan of, after watching her for a long time in the brilliant TV series Suits. I do hope they get married as they look so in love and happy together. As I am writing about the Invictus games I want to mention one man in particular. He is Corporal Ricky Paul Furgusson, formerly of The Rifles. Ricky Furgusson went to the aid of wounded comrades in Afghanistan, he smiled broadly as he stepped forward on carbon fibre legs to receive a gallantry medal from the Queen, his bravery on the battlefield helped save the lives of many of his comrades. Corporal Ricky Furgusson, 25, lost both legs, an eye, and all his fingers on both hands as he travelled back-
wards and forwards four times to rescue colleagues in Afghanistan in January. He has only been on his artificial legs for six weeks, but was determined to walk up to the Queen to receive the Military Cross at Buckingham Palace. This is a man to admire, many youngsters, who sit around guzzling beer and smoking weed should look to this kind of person as an example of what being British is, this is a part of our culture that we seem to have lost. Must we go on fighting other people’s wars, and losing some of our young people that could be the backbone of Britain, I hope not.

Even under a leaden sky on a December day, the vast flatness of the Norfolk countryside is inescapable. The distinctive Norfolk dialect is a language encapsulated in its landscape, with long vowels and wide horizons, summing up the county and its people. Norfolk is familiar to us during the summer months, with its endless skies and fantastic light so beloved by painters, who are as numerous as the wild fowl in the coastal wetlands. With the sunshine on your back and from the unbroken vista of fields and pastures of the hinterland, to the long sandy beaches and marshland of the coastal regions, there is an other-world-
ly feel to this lovely eastern county. But what could possibly entice someone here on a bleak winter’s day? Seven miles north of the town of Fakenham and almost without warning to the unwary, we turn into a narrow country lane, indicating Thursford village. With barely room for two vehicles to pass and with no street lighting, this would appear to be heading into uncharted territory. The only clue to the uninitiated that something interesting lays ahead is the procession of car tail lights and a discernible glow in the sky that increases in intensity as we progress. Then after a bare half mile and quite suddenly, we enter a massive flood-
lit car park where fluorescently clad stewards are busily directing the flow of cars and coaches. Enter the magical world of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. To most people, the name Thursford will elicit looks of incomprehension. In the summer months it is home to one of the most important steam collections in the world, but during November and December it is totally converted and given a Christmas theme; with almost 130 thousand people attending and like us, many returning year on year. It is perhaps Christmas’ best kept secret and yet paradoxically, the biggest and most breathtaking of all
Christmas shows. It would take much more space to adequately describe this event, and even then I could not hope to do it justice. The ambience is sheer enchantment and it simply has to be experienced firsthand. The content is a combination of traditional Christmas and variety, but the genius of John Cushing, Thursford’s producer and director, is to tie the whole package together with a loving festive ribbon and deliver a memorable Christmas extravaganza. This Yuletide masterpiece is a musthave addition to everyone’s bucket list. But do it soon, some of you are looking peaky.

Jeremy Corbyn to appear on Celebrity Gogglebox The labour leader is due to appear on the celebrity edition of Gogglebox on Channel 4 in aid of Stand up to Cancer. He is expected to share the sofa with another mystery celebrity. At time of going to print it was unknow what progammes he will be watching although it has been confirmed he will not be filmed at his home. Corbyn has been quoted as saying he is “really looking forward to it”.

Royal British Legion launches 2017 poppy appeal AS THE Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion (RBL) looked forward to its busiest time of the year, there was an opportunity for members to relax following their October monthly meeting when local entertainer Paul Cullen dropped into Mil Palmeras to entertain over 80 RBL supporters. RBL Branch President Keith Brown thanked Paul for dropping in and giving up his time as he was booked to appear later on in the evening at another venue close by. Short and sweet it may have been but everyone enjoyed being taken back to the 1960s and beyond with some songs that they’d long since forgotten, from the Beatles to the Kinks, the Animals to Cliff, and even Emile Ford & The Checkmates. Paul dug deep and found them and took many back to Satur-
day nights at the Mecca accompanied by the look and the smell of Brylcreem. The following day, Don and June Williams held their ‘Soup & Sandwich’ fund raiser in La Regia which saw 40 people supporting their much appreciate efforts and raised a significant sum of money. Thanks also to Carl and Nicola Louden for their assistance on the day. Elsewhere along the Orihuela Costa and the Costa Calida, poppies have been distributed to bars and to other outlets where they are available for supporters to proudly purchase and display. They will also be on sale at all local markets, at Iceland and this Saturday and Sunday Chelsea Pensioners Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale are flying out especially from
the Royal Hospital in Chelsea to support the appeal at La Zenia Boulevard. Please remember that by making a donation for your poppy you are supporting those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country. It’s the very least that you can do.

Where men suffer more than women
You might know that some conditions affect more women than men, such as osteoporosis and breast cancer, but did you know that men are at far greater risk of dying from heart disease and cancer?
Heart disease Coronary heart disease (CHD) accounts for the deaths of nearly one-insix men and one-in-10 women each year in the UK. According to the British Heart Foundation, there are currently 2.3 million people living with heart disease in the UK more than 1.4 million men and 850,000 women – and almost twice as many men as women suffer with a heart attack each year (110,000 men, compared to 65,000 women). Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged
over many years. The three main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are: involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body, slow movement, and stiff and inflexible muscles. Men are 1.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than women, although scientists aren't sure why. Around 127,000 people in the UK have the condition. Most people with Parkinson's start to develop symptoms when they're over 50, although around 1 in 20 people with the condition first experience symptoms when they're under 40. Skin Cancer Men are far more likely to die from malignant melanoma – the most serious type of skin cancer – compared to women. According to Cancer Research UK, death rates amongst men are 70 per cent higher than women,
despite similar numbers being diagnosed with the disease each year. Some 6,200 men develop melanoma each year in the UK and 1,300 die from the disease, yet only 900 of the 6,600 women who develop it die. Cancer in general It's not just skin cancer
that men are more likely to die from. A recent US study analysed 36 different types of tumours and blood cancers that affect both sexes and found that men have about a 1-in-2 chance of developing cancer at some point in their lives, compared with 1-in-3 chance for women.

WOMEN WHO have had gestational diabetes may be able to reduce or even eliminate their risk for cardiovascular disease by following a healthy lifestyle in the years after giving birth, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study II following health habits and medical history of more than 90,000 women from before pregnancy through middle age and the early senior years. The study confirms the links between gestational diabetes and cardiovascular disease found by other studies. It also provides some of the strongest evidence to date that cardiovascular disease after gestational diabetes isn’t inevitable for women who adopt a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise moderately and do not smoke. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes, or high blood sugar that occurs only during pregnancy. Although it often disappears after birth, many women who had the condition later develop type 2 diabetes, usually by middle age. Some studies have shown women who had gestational

whats on Concert for Age Concern THE COOPERS ARMS in Ciudad Quesada is the place to be on Saturday November 11 as they help Age Concern raise some valuable funds. On with the show IT’S STILL only October but winter beckons for Studio32’s cast as they prepare for their next show. This talented company will be performing a wonderful stage adaptation of that film favourite, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. The show contains some all-time classic songs including Blue Skies, Sisters, and the Bing Crosby title number White Christmas. When show producers Phil Davies and Bob Wallace take on the challenge of helping out their old army commander they decide to stage a show in a barn in Vermont, and invite all of his old army colleagues. In charge of the production is Stage Manager Mike (played by Mervyn Williams, pictured
left), a very over-the-top character who panics at the slightest hiccup. Helping him out is the farm hand Ezekiel (played by Keith Longshaw, pictured right). These two cameo roles will delight audiences with their comic repartee and one-liners, in a show filled with love, laughter, and lots of song and dance. Both Keith and Mervyn have been with Studio32 for two years, and thoroughly enjoy the work involved in putting on large musicals. Studio32 are once again supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association with this production, as well as other local charities. So why not help them raise money for worthy causes whilst enjoying a terrific night’s entertainment.
Show dates are Wednesday November 29 to Saturday December 2 at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. All performances start at 7.30pm, and doors open at 7pm. More fun than screams at Halloween market MARJAL Costa Blanca is the venue for their Halloween Market held on the day itself, Tuesday October 31. The market is on from 11am through to 3.30pm and the live music – brought to you by the popular entertainer and singer Dan Davy – begins at 12noon. More than 30 stalls are expected selling anything from jewellery, crafts, fashion, handbags, shoes and so much more and with most of the stallholders dressing up in fancy dress it will surely add to the fun of the day.
Happy Animals Spanien Dog Show TOMORROW (Saturday) October 28 sees the Finca San Miguel de Salinas holding a Fun Dog Show in association with Happy Animals Spanien between 1pm and 5pm. Whether they’re big, small, short haired, long haired, young, old or naughty dogs all are welcome although they must be kept on a lead at all times. The entrance fee is €10 and there are nine different categories, with the best dog over all the categories being declared the winner and will take the trophy home; although all the dogs taking part will take a small gift home with them. Even if you’re not a dog owner, you’ll be more than welcome to come along and join in the afternoon with food, drinks, tombola and music available. All the money raised goes to buying food, hay, water, rent, repairs and blacksmith fees, and everyone coming is also encouraged to bring along some pet food of all kinds as a small donation. In a medium bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons olive oil, paprika, oregano, and salt and pepper. Stir in chicken pieces to coat. Cover, and refrigerate. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan or paella pan over medium heat. Stir in garlic, red pepper flakes,
and rice. Cook, stirring, to coat rice with oil, about 3 minutes. Stir in saffron threads, bay leaf, parsley, chicken stock, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer 20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a separate skillet over medium

1. In a large frying pan, heat olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Sprinkle potatoes lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until golden brown and crisp. 2. Once the potatoes are golden, stir in the onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions soften and begin to brown. 3. Meanwhile, beat eggs together with salt and pepper. Pour eggs into pan and stir gently to combine. Reduce heat to low and cook until eggs begin to brown on the bottom. 4. Loosen bottom of omelette with a spatula, invert a large plate over the pan, and carefully turn the omelette out onto it. Slide the omelette back into the pan with the uncooked side down. Cook until eggs are set. Garnish omelette with tomato and green onion and serve warm.

1 cup white sugar, 3 eggs, 1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk, 1 (12 fluid oz) can evaporated milk, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1. Preheat oven to 350ºF (175ºC). 2. In a medium saucepan over mediumlow heat, melt sugar until liquid and golden in colour. Carefully pour hot syrup into a 9 inch round glass baking dish, turning the dish to evenly coat the bottom and sides. Set aside. 3. In a large bowl, beat eggs. Beat in condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour egg mixture into baking dish. Cover with aluminium foil. 4. Bake in preheated oven 60 minutes. Let cool completely. 5. To serve, carefully invert on serving plate with edges when completely cool.

How to choose wallpaper for painting
There are various types of wallpapers that are suitable for painting.
Lining paper Lining paper helps to cover defects in the walls surface, providing a smooth and even finish for the wallpaper to be applied onto. If it is being used to line the walls in preperation for a finished paper, the lengths are hung horizontally, this prevents the joins in the lining paper from matching up with the joins in the wallpaper, which is hung vertically, thus preventing the paper peeling on the joins. Lining paper comes in different grades from 400 to 1200 or more, the higher the number the better the quality and weight of the paper. Wood chip This is a budget paper consisting of small pieces of wood sandwiched between two layers of paper. The thicker grades are easy to hang and provide good coverage for rough or uneven surfaces but it is not easy to trim to length and can prove
difficult to remove. The thinner grades of wood chip are difficult to hang and are easily torn when wet. Relief This paper is imprinted with a raised pattern and comes in lots of different designs. It is easy to hang and provides good coverage over rough surfaces, again the thinner grades can tear when wet. Textured vinyls These have a deep embossed surface pattern that makes them ideal for covering uneven walls, they are also hard wearing which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas such as hallways and children's bedrooms. Some have nice delicate hints of colour so don't need painting, but you still have the option to paint over if necessary. These are very easy to hang but are usually a little pricier than relief papers.

Modern cars at risk of cyberattacks IN ORDER to mitigate the risks of cyberattacks that come with the everincreasing connectivity of motor vehicles, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has published a number of principles of automobile cybersecurity, which all its members endorse. “The digital world offers unprecedented opportunities,” stated ACEA Secretary General, Erik Jonnaert. “Nevertheless, opportunity comes with risks, and one of these is the threat of direct cyberattacks on your car or indeed a whole fleet of vehicles. Keeping cybersecurity risks for connected vehicles in check is therefore of crucial importance.” Firstly, countering such risks requires the number of data interfaces within a vehicle to be limited. Secondly, interfaces that are needed for connectivity purposes
VULNERABLE: In theory as modern cars get more connected, hackers could endanger the safety of drivers and passengers should be protected with very high cybersecurity measures. Highly aware of this, the automobile industry has taken the lead in designing and producing safe and secure connected and automated vehicles, by following well-established safety and security principles.
If adequate cybersecurity mechanisms are not implemented and cybersecurity risks not dealt with appropriately, the interfaces of connected vehicles can present an opportunity for exploiting vulnerabilities. New Ford EcoSport SUV built in Romania FORD MOTOR Company - taking aim at Europe’s fastest-growing vehicle segment –have started production of the new Ford EcoSport small SUV at its Craiova, Romania, assembly plant. The decision to build the new EcoSport in Europe rather than continue to import the vehicle from Ford’s plant in Chennai, India, will help Ford respond to rising customer demand. “EcoSport is another example of how Ford is growing our business on our strengths – including worldclass SUVs,” said Steven Armstrong, Ford group vice president and president, Europe Middle East and Africa. “With demand growing for EcoSport, and compact SUVs in general, now is the right time to localize production in Europe to meet our customers’ needs.” Total industry sales of SUVs in Ford’s 20 European traditional markets grew by 27 per cent last
year and accounted for more than one in four new passenger car registrations. Ford’s SUV sales in Europe grew more than 30 per cent in 2016 and have risen by 27 per cent in the first eight months of 2017. SUV growth means more jobs, too. By year-end, Ford is creating another 1,700 jobs at Ford Craiova, bringing the total workforce for both vehicle and engine production to 3,900. Ford’s total investment in its Romanian world-class facility now exceeds €1 billion since it took over the plant in March 2008. Craiova is the sole source of EcoSport production for Europe (excluding Russia), supplying 56 markets on four continents. Driven by humans...parked by robots THERE IS no doubt that airport parking can be a significant source of grief on holidays and business trips. As well as being expensive, upon your return you’re guaranteed to forget which zone you parked in, and there’s always a chance that a careless holidaymaker or an overzealous valet parking employee will have dinged your door while you’ve been away. It’s the stuff of nightmares. Fortunately, the team at Stanley Robotics has come up with a solution that could consign all of that to history. Their robot - affectionately named Stan – automatically collects cars from designated drop-off areas and transports them to the nearest car park until owners are ready to reclaim their vehicles. The process begins when customers make a booking via the company’s app or website, before parking in a “well lit and spacious” garage close to their terminal. Then once they’ve confirmed their arrival on the accompanying touchscreen, they’re free to leave for their flight, taking their keys with them. At this point, Stan will step in to collect deposited vehicles, automatically adjusting to each car’s dimensions as it slides underneath and gently lifts the car off the ground. Then, when it has reached the airport’s car park, it uses “the latest sensor technology” to precisely manoeuvre vehicles into rows of five. The system is being touted as a money-saver for airports, with Stanley Robotics claiming that it can increase the number of cars in a given area by as much as 50 per cent. They also point out that operating costs would plummet without the need for regular cleaning and maintenance. The fully electric system is advertised as a zero-emissions solution, and while they neglect to mention where the electricity may be generated, each robot is said to be capable of processing between 20,000 and 30,000 vehicles per year, managing up to 400 parking spaces at any one time. The system’s final party trick is that each booking contains a record of customers’ flight details, meaning that cars can be returned to the easy-access drop-off point in anticipation of their owners’ return. Stanley Robotics’ valet solution is already in operation at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, and having recently secured millions of pounds in investment, there’s every chance it could become a more common feature at airports across the globe in the very near future.

Only seven boats started the afternoon race, and The Sailfish 18’s “Sirocco” and “Mistral” were first away and “Sirocco” held this lead for three laps but had been passed by the Gamba “Shoestring Uno” and the Topaz by the end of lap four. The Topaz had started 4th but made up a place every lap so 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st and held the lead until the finish signal. It later transpired that the Topaz had capsized at one time but recovered to continue, so an excellent performance to finish in the lead. FOR THE first time in many weeks there was a good wind all day for the SAMM Pursuit Racing on October 15, with 8-10 knots for the morning race and 10-12 knots for the afternoon. Five new people joined the regular competitors, three crewed in some of the regular boats, but a young Spanish couple, Esther Gonzales and Jesús Saura competed in their Mattia F18 catamaran. Nine boats came to the morning start and all the fleet stared within 17 minutes of the first boat except the F18, which is so fast its start was 45 minutes later. A good race ensued and gradually the first away were being caught and passed by the chasers so that with 7 ½ minutes to go the fifth boat to start, the Topaz Duo, rounded the mark to start the 5th lap followed by the F18, which had been steaming round the course, just 45 seconds later.
