Iconic sand dunes and pine forest to be saved by tahnee Wright GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA Town Hall has announced an ambitious threeyear project to guarantee the future of its famous sand dunes. The plan is to implement a programme over a period of three years with the dunes seeing what has been described as “the greatest environmental project in a century” and to prevent

According to the environment councillor Silvestre García - who has described the plans as “exciting and ambitious” – the project will put an end to the slow and constant degradation of the dunes and the forest that has taken place over a number of years. He believes the work to be “vital and urgent” as failure to take action now will result in no pine forest at all within a

few years. Much of the blame has been aimed at Mother Nature with less rain and hotter conditions and so there has been less and less natural regeneration. García said: “It’s a restoration project where it’s going to be necessary to introduce a selection of plants that are compatible with the current habitat and climate and will survive and flourish in the extreme drought conditions being experienced.”

IN the space of only a few days, a second Spanish Air Force pilot has been killed. Fernando Perez Serrano, 26, and born in Alcantarilla, Murcia died when his F-18 fighter crashed inside the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base in Madrid during take-off. According to the Ministry of Defence, the pilot was unable to eject from the aircraft and the cause of the accident was due to a loss of power. Serrano, a single man, had been in the Air Force since 2009, and had more than 700 hours flying experience. He came from a military background as his father, Fernando Perez Nicolás, was the commander in chief of the Paratroopers Squadron Squadron (EZAPAC) of the

Twelve years for brother-in-law killer A RESIDENT of Torrevieja has been sent to prison for 12 and a half years for killing his brother-in-law. The man was convicted of the incident back in July after being found guilty by jury of homicide aggravated by superiority. Being guilty of such a crime means the accused had possession of a weapon which, in law, gave him an advantage to be able to end the man’s life. The sentence has been confirmed by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Communtiy (TSJCV) against N. K. who stabbed his wife’s brother eight times during an argument with a 20cm blade. It was back on January 28, 2015 when the incident happened and according to the evidence the guilty man went to his brother-in-law’s house located on Calle Clemente Gonzálvez after drinking. An argument broke out over financial issues in the middle of the street which resulted in the stabbing in the stomach and back causing the victim to bleed to death.

AS PROMOTED in last week’s edition of RTN, the spirit of the Olympic Games visited the Mar Menor over last weekend. Santiago de la Ribera was full to brimming with people for the second hosting of the Mar Menor Games, with an estimated 35,000 people participating and watching more than 60 different sporting activities over Saturday and Sunday. Under the organisation of the Union of Sports Federations in Murcia and with the collaboration of the Autonomous Community and the local municipality, a multitude of sports took place in a variety of venues both indoors and outside. These ranged from from badminton on the beach, tennis, paddleball, handball, rugby and American football, swimming and the Mar Menor half-marathon. Councillor Javier Celdrán paid the event a visit during the weekend and stressed that, “the union of sport and tourism is one of the main activities held in the region at the end of the summer season and shows the tremendous possibilities the area has to host any sporting events throughout the year.” Throughout the weekend the events

A MAN has been sent to prison for six months for stealing €1,400 worth of jewellery. The Provincial Court of Murcia has confirmed the sentence awarded to the young man who took advantage of a friend’s offer to have a shower at his home following a game of football. While he was in the house, he stole the jewellery belonging to his friend’s mother. The events took place back in July 2013 when the offender was classed as a minor and

acknowledged he was the culprit at the time. The woman didn’t notice the theft of her property until a few days afterwards when she took some time off work to search her house from top to bottom without any success. It was at this point she realised they must have been stolen and reported her suspicions to the police. During the investigation it was proven that the stolen items were offered for sale in a shop that purchases gold.

Locals receive rail protest fines €601 and relate to incidents during September when hundreds of locals gathered in Santiago el Mayor to demand that the AVE high-speed train track due to pass through the area is via a tunnel. The current plans will see a wall erected either side of the tracks as a way of stopping the noise levels which are the main concerns of the protestors.

by Lynn Whittaker CREVILLENTE IS the latest in a growing number of municipalities to announce a 5 per cent reduction in the annual Real Property Tax (IBI), known by many as the SUMA council tax. The move will apply to 23,000 homes and will take effect from next year’s payment due in May 2018. In addition, the rubbish collection tax will be reduced by 17 per cent. Specifically, the reduction will apply to a number of fincas in the municipality and will see an estimated shortfall of €350,000 for the Crevillente coffers. However, the loss will be compensated by payments made from illegal and unregistered properties that are currently in the process of being formalised. This initiative still needs to go through a formal council meeting, but it already has

the explicit support of the PP, Ciudadanos and Compromis parties. The full details of the reduction in rates will be discussed by the finance committee. The municipality also estimates an increase in revenue of €400,000 from fincas that have had their values increased and will be part of the €6.3m raised from the IBI tax. The budget also includes provision of €50,000 for a social assistance programme intended to pay the IBI of families that find themselves in financial difficulties and within a qualification criteria to be announced shortly. Crevillente’s Mayor, Cesar Asencio said: “We are satisfied that we have been able to make this tax reduction of more than half a million euro without jeopardising the standard of the services offered by the municipality.”

THE COMUNIDAD Valenciana has come out in second place across Spain when it comes to the number of divorces and separations, with the rates in Alicante and Murcia showing above the average rates. The overall number of requests for dissolution of marriage registered in the second quarter of 2017 in the Valencia region was 3,646, according to data released by the statistics section of the Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). This figure comes below those for the Canary Islands which have the highest

level for every 10,000 inhabitants. In percentage terms the Canary Islands were on 7.4 per cent and the Comunidad Valenciana very close behind on 7.39 per cent. by Glenn Scott TWO TEENAGE children have been arrested in the Churra area of Murcia in relation to incidents on a local tram line. According to the local police in Murcia, the youths aged 15 and 16 had placed stones and wooden planks across the tram tracks to make the vehicle stop so

they could then daub graffiti all over it. The driver spotted the obstacles at the last minute as they were flat on the tracks and managed to bring the tram to a halt but not before he hit them. Police say that there was no damage to the train and nobody on board suffered any injuries. The teenagers were caught thanks to a combination of recordings taken from

security cameras and the statement from the driver. When approached in Juan de Borbón they had paint spray cans with them. The 15-year old was taken to his home address where his parents were told that proceedings would be put in place for them to pay damages. The 16year-old was initially held in custody for being aggressive toward the police when caught before being taken home.

Man jailed for abusing mother-in-law

A MAN has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for a series of sexual abuses toward his mother-in-law. The victim, aged 85, was subjected to a number of incidents over a period of time which her son-in-law recorded using his mobile phone and stored them

on his personal computer. The total sentence was made up of seven years for the abuse, plus another five years for sexual exploitation and corruption. The man, as well as being part of the woman’s family, was also one of the people formally charged with caring for her.

Coastal relief road deal signed

AN AGREEMENT has been signed to begin the construction of the Mojácar coastal relief road. The deal was agreed at a meeting between the Mayor of Mojácar, Rosmari Cano, and Housing Minister, Felipe López, which authorised the collaboration between the council

and the Andalucía authorities. Cano was quick to point out the importance of this new bypass that will make tourism to the area much more accessible in the future due to the amount of summer traffic that builds up in the areas close to the beaches.

More airport locals to get a quieter life by Steve Collins AIRPORT MANAGERS AENA will be soundproofing a further number of homes to reduce the increase of noise pollution in Alicante and Elche. Residents of Urbanova and Arenales del Sol have complained that in recent months there have

been noticeable higher levels of noise as the aircraft arrive and take off from the Alicante-Elche Airport, especially on Saturdays when there is a take-off roughly every five minutes. AENA announced the measures at a meeting of the team that monitor the airport which amount to €1.6m for sound insulation of 298 homes in

the municipalities of Alicante and Elche and are within the scope of the official acoustic isolation plans of the airport. The latest programme of work will take the total of 2,667 buildings that have had such soundproofing carried out in them. Over the next few months, AENA will be putting the building works out to tender.

The mother of the children had denounced the man after leaving them in his care as the father – her ex-husband - was also unable to take charge of them either. The outcome of this case – which was dealt with in March - has only just been confirmed in official court documents

by Tahnee Wright BUSINESS OWNERS in the popular shopping area of Avenida Maisonnave in Alicante haven’t seen any significant increase in their Sunday trading during the Volvo Ocean Race, despite being given special dispensation to open. Those traders consulted said that their sales were considerably low, with some re remarking that they have taken more money during a ‘normal’ Sunday, without the added bonus of tens of thousands of extra visitors in the city. One sales clerk who works in a textile outlet on the Maisonnave said that in the first 90 minutes of trading they didn’t take a sin single euro. Another who runs a shop selling clothes and shoes regretted reorganising all the shift schedules around the Sunday open opening hours and commented that there were lots of window shoppers and had probably

spent all their money during the previous week’s holiday. The frustration of the business people was exacerbated as groups representing traders had agreed to close on the previous Thursday in exchange for being allowed to open on both Sundays (15 and 22) while the Volvo Ocean Race is in town. According to data supplied by Alicante port authorities, 63,986 visited the Race Village during the first Saturday and a further 10,000 were estimated to be watching the first regatta made up of 300 boats from the Paseo Volado. This forthcoming weekend will see the maximum influx of visitors alongside in increased presence of national and international media as the race proper gets underway. Traders in the Maisonnave hope that some of those extras make their way into their premises and by doing so back up their gamble on fighting the authorities to allow Sunday opening for the event.

Nudists get their chance to bare all... but cover the dog’s eyes! CARTAGENA COUNCIL has announced that news laws will be put in place to regulate the spaces on beaches used for pets and naturists. The announcement follows a series of proposals as a result of consultations with residents and other interested parties, and will also include regulations

on fishing and areas for caravans. Councillor Saturnina Martinez said: “There will be dedicated spaces on the beaches for people to practice nudism and to bring their pets. There will also be smoke-free areas and separate areas for different sporting and leisure activities.”

Crash victim hospitalised with arm injuries A 37-YEAR-OLD man suffered serious injuries to one of his hands and arm when involved in a car accident in Santa Pola that also involved another vehicle. According to emergency services sources, the accident involved a car and a motorcycle at happened in Calle Sant Josep, and units

of the emergency medical assistance service (SAMU) and the basic life support (SVB) attended the scene. They assisted the man who had suffered a trauma to one hand and multiple contusion and possible fracture to an upper arm, before taking him to the Elche General Hospital.

Successful week in England for Spanish students by Lynn Whittaker A NUMBER of students from the University of Cartagena used the recent week of local and national holidays to spend some time on a cultural trip to England. Students – especially those studying English at the higher level – took the opportunity to get to know Liverpool and Chester. In Liverpool, they toured around some of the most emblematic places in the city such as the Tate and the Merseyside Maritime Museum – which currently features many exhibits connected with the Titanic - as well as the two iconic Anglican and Catholic cathedrals. In addition, they made a stop at one of the most famous places connected with music in the world, let alone Liverpool, namely the Cavern Club, associated with the beginnings of the Beatles. On to Chester, the medieval city which is famous for being the only one left in England still surrounded by a wall, where they group visited the beautiful 13th century Norman cathedral and the main Eastgate Street. This area features many houses with the halftimbered facades and link to The Rows, the unique set of covered shops and galleries.

They also visited the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent which is acknowledged to have the most detailed exhibition of ceramics in Europe.

Six-figure grants for local associations

CARTAGENA’S COUNCILLOR for Social Services, Carmen Martín, has signed a number of agreements giving direct grants to four local organisations totalling €100,000. The beneficiaries from the grants are the nursing home, children’s home, Caritas charity and the Marraja Foundation. The latter has received a grant of €25,000 towards the elderly people’s home at Casa Betania which houses 10 people. The children’s home has been given €15,000 towards a holiday project and Caritas will benefit from €25,000 for its reception and personal attention service. Finally, €35,000 goes to the nursing home to help the day-to-day running of the residential care centre for elderly people experiencing financial hard times.

Airport numbers taking off by Ray Chadwick IN THE same week that AlicanteElche Airport announced growing passenger numbers and breaking all previous records, Murcia-San Javier has smashed some records of their own. For the month of September, the number of passengers using the airport reached 141,446, representing an

increase year-on-year of 5.4 per cent, and for the year as a whole almost touched the million mark with 982,495. According to airport managers AENA, these figures show a 9.3 per cent increase compared to the equivalent nine month period in 2016. Overall last year, Murcia-San Javier Airport dealt with 1,096,980 passengers which was 2.7 per cent up on 2015. The authorities believe that this figure will be more than beat-

Numbers of landing and take-off operations registered since the start of the year have reached 7,038 and a growth of 4.4 per cent; for September 975 flights were handled at Murcia-San Javier and are up 5 per cent. AENA have also announced that passenger growth across all the airports under their control amounts to 8.3 per cent between January and September.

DEPARTMENT STORE El Corte Inglés in Murcia – located on Avenida Libertad and Gran Vía Salzillo – has completed a major refurbishment programme. Work began just over a year ago in September 2016 and saw the most significant remodelling of the store in its 44 year history since opening in 1973.

During the course of the renovations, most of the ceilings, lighting, and general decoration have been changed and departments have been relocated to different floors to enable the customers to enjoy a better shopping experience in more comfortable and modern surroundings.

Kamikaze driver stopped MORE THAN 30 drivers called the 112 emergency number to report a driver speeding along a major road...on the wrong side. The kamikaze driver was spotted on the main RM19 that links Murcia and San Javier as he passed through Torre Pacheco. The traffic unit of the Guardia Civil stopped the driver as he left the Balsicas exit of the RM-19 where he was tested, as is normal in these cases,

for alcohol and drugs. At the time of going to press, it’s unknown what the results of the tests were, and also why the man was driving on the wrong side of the highway in the first place. Guardia Civil said that even though this was a very dangerous incident, they were pleased to report that there were no injuries to individuals or damage to any other vehicles.

Quirónsalud offer free mammograms to mark International Breast Cancer Day HOSPITAL Quirónsalud Torrevieja is launching a campaign to help prevent breast cancer by providing free mammograms to mark International Breast Cancer Day. Free mammograms will be offered from October 19 – 31, 2017 via prebooked appointments. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the female population in Spain, making up 29% of all cancers. It is estimated that one out of every eight women will suffer breast cancer.

The highest incidence is in women over fifty, although the incidence in women under forty has risen by 10% in the last few years. The reason for this increase may be due to lifestyle changes, a tendency to have less children, the increased age women have their first pregnancy and a history of the disease in direct family members. Early diagnosis of the disease, through a mammogram, lowers mortality risk by between 15 and 20%. Doctor Antonio Brugarolas, head

of the oncology department at the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, has been successfully applying a “tailored” treatment to patients, following a genetic analysis of their tumours. After each biopsy, genes related to the response or resistance to chemotherapy are analysed, and the response profile of each tumour to each of the anti-tumour medications are tested. Data is obtained showing which treatments are the most effective.

LOCAL POLICE in Cabo de Palos paid a visit to a resident living in Avenida de Calas after dumping an asbestos tube next to a rubbish container. Police had earlier received a call from other concerned locals about the presence of this dangerous item that

Sniffer dogs find drugs and cash

LOCAL POLICE in Torrevieja have arrested a 44-yearold man for attempting to flee a bank with €6,000 after holding the manager hostage. the branch manager. According to police sources, the police – having been alerted to the incident – arrived just as the arrested man was about to leave the bank with the cash. TWO PEOPLE have been arrested as being behind alleged drug trafficking offences after their vehicles were found to contain hashish. Their illegal stash was discovered by one of the dogs of the National Police’s Canine Unit trained for the detection of drugs and had recently been honoured for their work. As well as the 100 grams of hashish, a total of €53,700 was found in two separate places in the car in plastic bags after being searched during a routine set of police checks. Of the six cars that were intercepted by police, two were given special attention after those in the car gave conflicting versions of the reasons for their journey. Their suspicions caused the police to call for the backup of the canine team to carry out a more detailed search of the vehicle. The subsequent search found most of the drugs

AS RECENTLY as the 1960s Britain’s Merchant Navy was the largest in the world. It was said that 350,000 British seaman and officers served under the Red Ensign. The Ellerman shipping company alone boasted that it could put a ship into any port in the world within 24-hours. Formed in 1892 with £800,000 one of the world’s greatest maritime fleets collapsed in 2004. Proportionately, British seamen suffered higher losses during WWII than did RAF Bomber Command. When in 1941 the Red Army was beaten back to the gates of Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad, Churchill and U.S. President Roosevelt appropriated Britain’s merchant navy and rushed aid to the Bolsheviks. Rescuing Bolshevism sank 101 British merchant ships and cost the lives of 3,000 British seamen. In total, 30,248 British sailors lost their lives during WWII. Up until 1966 70,000 cadets attended the 3-month training courses at the school for seamanship in Sharpness. There was a similar school on Gravesend. Today, just 250 ratings are being trained, mostly for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, an arm of the Royal Navy.

Wherever British seamen voyaged they would find several British flagged ships at anchor or moored at wharfs. Our Jack Tars were to be found all over Africa, the Middle and Far East, Americas, and what was known as the Dominions. At the four points of the compass, everywhere between the Poles, Britain ruled the waves. Britain’s merchant fleets have disappeared as have 327,000 British seamen. Many crews origi-

nate in places abroad and mostly waiting-on staff working coastal ferries. Flags of convenience vessels pay their non-British crews as little as $3.47 per hour. Former MP, Ian Henderson (59) says of Hull, “We are now down to just one British-flagged ship with 60 seafarers. It doesn’t help when our government sits back and watches the demise of our Merchant Navy and encourages shipping companies to exploit cheap labor.” It is laughable that Britain celebrates the launching of the £3 billion HMS Queen Elizabeth, an aircraft carrier without aircraft, whilst dependent on foreign seamen working non-British ships. No less than 95% of Britain’s trade is transported by sea, compared with 48% in the rest of the European Union. Britain is likely the least self-sufficient country on earth. It will be difficult if not impossible to find a crew for a single UK-bound vessel if offshore, waiting for their ships, lurk a couple of Russian frigates and submarines. Without imports Britain is totally incapacitated within the week. But none dare call it treason.

Part 2 On November 6 and 7, 1917 (or October 24 and 25 on the Julian calendar, which is why the event is often referred to as the October Revolution), leftist revolutionary’s members of the Bolshevik Party Led by Leon Trotsky a Marxist revolutionary, theorist, and Soviet politician. Initially supporting the Menshevik Internationalists faction within the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, he joined the Bolsheviks (“majority”) just before the 1917 October Revolution, immediately becoming a leader within the Communist Party. He would go on to become one of the seven members of the first Politburo, founded in 1917 to manage the Bolshevik Revolution.[2] During the early days of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and the Soviet Union, he served first as People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army, with the title of People’s Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs along Vladimir Lenin launched a nearly bloodless coup d’état against the Duma’s provisional government.

The Red Army fought for the Lenin’s Bolshevik government. The White Army represented a large group of loosely al allied forces, including monarchists, capi capitalists and supporters of democratic socialism. The Russian Civil War ended in 1923 with Lenin’s Red Army claiming vic victory and establishing the Soviet Union. Bolsheviks, led by leftist revolution revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, seized power and destroyed the tradition of Czarist rule. The Bolsheviks would later become the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most explosive political events of the twentieth century. The violent revolution had marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of Russian Imperial rule. After leading a failed struggle of the left opposition against the policies and the rise of a new dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1920s, and against the increasing role of the bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was removed from power in October 1927, and expelled from the Communist Party the next month. And then exiled from Russia in February 1929. As the head of the Fourth International brigade, Trotsky continued to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union from exile. On 20

August 1940, Trotsky was assassinated by Ramón Mercader, a Spanish-born NKVD agent, passing away the next day in a hospital. Mercader, who attacked Trotsky with an Ice axe, acted upon instruction from Stalin and was nearly beaten to death by Trotsky’s bodyguards, with Mercader spending 20 years in a Mexican prison for murdering Trotsky. Stalin presented Mercader with an Order of Lenin. The last remaining Communist countries are still Russia, and China, but in both cases the Redness of their flags have faded to a much paler colour, as the Russian and Chinese workers know the colour of their money in the bank, is more important to them than the colour of their flags. Cuba the first new Communist country since the Russian revolution, is now beginning to slowly become a democracy. P.S. My Fathers Parents where white Russians, the family name was Mendelovitch, this was changed just before I was born, on my mother side was my Grandmother who brought me up from a baby, she was a white Russian also, and called me a Bolshevik (Bolshie) when I was a bad.

I was admiring shirts in one of the ubiquitous sales at Zenia Boulevard the other day, when the Princess, fresh from her own browsing, tapped me on the shoulder and suggested solemnly that I had more than enough shirts already taking up valuable space. I couldn’t help noticing that she was toting a suspiciously large Zara bag at the time, but I said nothing. But she was right, and I resolved then and there to have a good old sort out when we got home. I am always grateful for my wife’s help when deciding what to keep and what to donate to charity or chuck out. “You haven’t worn that since we got married”, she might say. “So?” “That was thirty eight years ago.” “Fair point” I would concede. “But you never know.” And so it will go on until I make what I consider the

minimum amount of concessions, and she is happy that at least a small clearing has been made in the forest of menswear. Then I get to the sock drawer and I know what I will find, or more to the point what I will not find, because there will be an assortment of socks without partners. What is it with this sock thing? Sometimes of course the missing piece of footwear is easily explained; either stuck to the drum of the washing machine, or inadvertently left in the bottom of the linen basket. Mine occasionally show up in the cat’s basket and once I found one in my lunch box between two pieces of wholegrain bread and garnished with tomato and lettuce, but that was just the Princess having a joke. I split my sides laughing. But most of the time it’s as if they had never existed and simply disappear off

the face of the earth. And it’s always the better quality ones that vanish; a Nike or a Pringle of Scotland for example, never the three pairs for five euro jobs. And apart from the exceptions mentioned, they never turn up – ever. Is this some mysterious intergalactic practice? A kinky alien race abducting odd footwear for their own perverted ends? A sort of “Beam me up socky.” Because the really weird thing is, these items never even make it to the washing line. They simply go into the machine, but never come out. I think I will start

IN THE last article we started turning our verbs from first person “I” forms to second person “you” forms, and we distinguished between tú and usted, that is the informal and extra-polite ways of expressing “you” in Spanish. Since the beginning of these articles we have been looking at these as part of a particular kind of sentence – that is, linking them to other verbs to express intentions, obligations and preferences. However, verbs are not always used in this way, so today we are going to remind ourselves briefly of how they can be used in other simple ways, and gently extend our range of possibilities. I’ll throw a few new words in, but you should be well able to cope with this by now!

There’s a chance none of that makes any sense at all – so let’s get down to practicalities and give you a range of real examples. For example – the verb querer (to want). Quiero viajar a Beijing. I want to travel to Beijing. ¿Quieres comprar un coche nuevo? Do you want to buy a new car? - informal ¿No quiere estudiar más? Don’t you want to study any more? – formal But not forgetting the simpler use of this verb. No quiero más postre, gracias. I don’t want any more pudding, thank you.

In this last example, given that the formal form is being used, the correct translation is really “What would you like?” as that is what we would actually say in English. Notice that the word usted is optional, but it sometimes gets put in to make the sentence sound more courteous. I can’t resist a little digression here, even though it’s not strictly relevant to what we are looking at. It is in answer to the question – can’t the verb querer also mean “to love”? Yes it can. It also means “to love” in the romantic, personal sense, not in the sense of loving fish and chips. Therefore, te quiero means “I love you”. It can also mean “I want you”. I don’t think we’re going to go any further down this road at the moment. We can go through the same sort of process with necesitar “to need”. Necesito firmar estos papeles. I need to sign these papers. ¿Necesitas un descanso? Do you need a break? No necesita tomar más medicamento. You don’t need to take any more medicine.

Tributes to the late Sean Hughes The team behind Never Mind the Buzzcocks have paid tribute to the Irish comedian Sean Hughes who died earlier this week. The 51-year-old had been a regular on the music quiz show for six years as a team captain. Although the series is no longer broadcast it has still been active over the last couple of years with it´s YouTube channel, which is where the team chose to upload a compilation of Hughes´ best moments with his co-stars Mark Lamarr and Phill Jupitus. The latter also shared his memories and a photo of him and Sean on Twitter. Sean was the youngest ever to win the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award in 1990 at only 24.

Life Classic cars en route

LOVERS OF classic cars will be in their element in San Javier shortly. On Sunday November 5, the III Concentration of Classic Vehicles will be held in the municipality and is planned to include 150 cars. The parade will begin in the Plaza de España and end in Parque Almansa and will see double the amount of participants when compared to the first event of this kind in 2015. Surrounded by a number of the iconic vehicles, San Javier’s Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, announced the staging of the event which is held in memory of Pedro Martínez Saura who lived in the locality and was a popular member of the Mar Menor Classic Automobile Association until his death. The cars – all of which must be at least 25 years old – will be on display until 12 noon when the two hour route gets underway.

Return of Maria and the Pink Ladies After a not so quiet summer Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers are back into full swing with fundraising activities for the AECC. September the 29th saw two sucessfull coffee mornings, raising funds in aid of the charity. The Looking Good Boutique in La Zenia jazzed up their coffee morning with a mini fashion show, a cake auction and lots of cava. The day raised €300 which was presented to Maria at the end of the event. The third coffee morning was at Bar La Vista, La Finca Golf Algorfa. The event was organised by the Algorfa Ladies and the money raised on the day was equally split betwwen AECC, MacMillan Nurses and Paul Cunningham nurses, with them all receiving an amazing €650 each. The raffle was supported by local businesses, a spa day for two was donated by Welcome Estate, who also very kindly donated 30 bottles of cava for during the event. The Pink Ladies were also extremely happy to receive a cheque from Smile for €500 at the Oasis Bar in Beni-jofar. EVERY YEAR on the 9th of October, the town hall of Pilar de la Horadada sponsor a paella day competition “Dia de la Paella”. The town hall provides the venue and ingredients for the Paella. The only rule is that it must be cooked over a wooden fire, again provided by the Town Hall, although each team can then cook their paella in their own unique style. For the third year running an English ex-pat team entered, and were made very welcome by the Spanish community. It was a great day out and thoroughly enjoyed by all visitors and competitors.

Afa Algea The blue-green micro algae from Lake Klamath

Algae form the primeval start to all life; they are rootless and leafless plants. Many types divide themselves millions of times per day. Of all known edible substances, algae possess the highest concentration of nourishments. To date, all attempts to grow the algae elsewhere have failed. Afa algae grows in the wild and has a tremendously high concentration of vital food components, which is why it is also known as „super food“. We are not a full-time or long-term care service but we will try to help in all cases, where we can, for those who need a little assistance in a time of need. Chicken Marsala IngredIents 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves – pounded, 1/4 inch thick, 1/4 cup plain flour for coating, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, 4 tablespoons butter, 4 tablespoons olive oil, 1 cup sliced mushrooms, 1/2 cup Marsala wine, 1/4 cup cooking sherry PreParatIon Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 20 minutes.

dIreCtIons 1. In a shallow dish or bowl, mix together the flour, salt, pepper and oregano. Coat chicken pieces in flour mixture. 2. In a large frying pan, melt butter in oil over medium heat. Place chicken in the pan, and lightly brown. Turn over chicken pieces, and add mushrooms. Pour in wine and sherry. Cover frying pan; simmer chicken 10 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink and juices run clear.

Ingredients 2 & 1/4 pounds cubed lamb meat, 4 teaspoons olive oil, divided, 1 brown onion, chopped. 1 red potato, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup curry powder, 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup drained canned chickpeas Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 1 hour and 15 minutes. Method 1. Place lamb in a bowl and drizzle 2 teaspoons olive oil over lamb; stir until coated. 2. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in a saucepan over low heat; cook and stir onion until softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Re-

Fresh Strawberry Granita IngredIents 2 pounds ripe strawberries, hulled and halved, 1/3 cup white sugar, or to taste, 1 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (optional), 1/4 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional), 1 tiny pinch salt PreParatIon Preparation time – 10 minutes. ready in 2 hours 25 minutes. Method 1. rinse strawberries with cold water; let drain. transfer berries to a blender and add sugar, water, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and salt. 2. Pulse several times to get the mixture moving, then blend until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour into a large baking dish. Puree should only be about 3/8 inch deep

in the dish. 3. Place dish uncovered in the freezer until mixture barely begins to freeze around the edges, about 45 minutes. Mixture will still be slushy in the centre. 4. Lightly stir the crystals from the edge of the granita mixture into the centre, using a fork, and mix thoroughly. Close freezer and chill until granita is nearly frozen, 30 to 40 more minutes. Mix lightly with a fork as before, scraping the crystals loose. repeat freezing and stirring with the fork 3 to 4 times until the granita is light, crystals are separate, and granita looks dry and fluffy. 5. Portion granita into small serving bowls to serve.

Check out that garden shed AN OVERWHELMING majority of people living in Spain will have their own garden, whatever the size, and every garden needs a faithful shed to store all those garden implements or act as an extension to their house. As another summer comes to an end, autumn brings a new set of challenges in the annual garden routine and now’s the time to check the shed contains all that’s needed.

2. Start from scratch: Thoroughly sort through the contents of the shed, placing everything into groups such as tools, pots and planters, seeds and so on. Get rid of any duplicates and decide which items in each group are used more than others. 3. A place for everything: Keep each shelf well organised by using clear boxes to store the contents so you can easily identify what lives where. Try to use boxes with lids where possible to

sharp blades away from surfaces.

4. Green fingered: If you have space, placing a potting table or bench inside the shed will mean you can work on your garden even when it’s raining. Opt for one with at least two shelves to maximise storage beneath and try to keep the surface clear of clutter.

7. Get creative: Make your own garden twine dispenser by punching a hole through the lid of a jam jar, placing a ball of twine inside and then pulling it out through the hole to stop it from tangling up.

5. Planning: Hang an annual planner on the wall of your shed so you can fill out the various garden tasks that need to be completed throughout the year. Choose one with a wipeable board so you can write on when you last planted certain seeds or fertilised the grass. 6. Magnetic magic: For small and lightweight metal tools, why not hang a magnetic kitchen knife strip on the wall to store things like screwdrivers, pliers and scissors? This simple solution means you can easily find what you need without rummaging through drawers or boxes, and it keeps

Forget the Spring Cleaning which was a regular task when people lived in the UK. After another Spanish summer which has probably seen many hibernate in their villas and apartments with the air-conditioning full on, more time has been spent indoors and left a feeling of being ‘lived-in’. Many would’ve had visitors and many are perhaps returning to the Costa Blanca to find the results of a season of holiday rentals. While nobody wants extra tasks to add to the cleaning to-do list, there are a few jobs to do every now and again to keep homes in tip top, germ-free condition. Here are 10 things that appear, on the surface (!), to be obvious, but you might just be forgetting to clean around your home:

1.Between and under the sofa cushions: anyone who has luckily dug up a handful of euro coins from down the sofa will know what an Aladdin’s cave it can become down there. 2.Under the fridge is a magnet for dust, crumbs and those odd specks of dirt we conveniently kick out of the way when we’re cleaning the floor. Take care and ask for help if you need it to move the fridge slightly to one side and then get under there with a dust pan and brush and a damp cloth. 3.Hairbrush: you use your hairbrush on wet hair, dry hair, dirty hair, clean hair and for singing in front of the mirror, so make sure it gets a thorough clean every now and again. 4. Doorknob and switches: consider how many people touch your doorknobs in a week or a month and where those hands might have been and you may find yourself scrabbling for the disinfectant. Just a microfibre cloth dabbed with some disinfectant will do the job in no time. 5.Pillows: you lay on them every night and no doubt clean the covers regularly but

it’s often easy to forget to wash the actual pillows. 6. Under the bed: it’s just above where you sleep so it’s important to make sure that the space under your bed is clean, especially if you or someone in your family is prone to allergies. 7. Sink drains have all sorts of things hurled at them including bits of last night’s dinner so they can easily clog up. Keep them clean and flowing by pouring down a couple of spoonfuls of baking powder and then letting the hot tap run for a bit. 8. Your rug can harbour lots of bits and bobs, from nails to pet hair to the back of that earring you lost last year so it’s a good idea to Hoover it regularly and get it properly cleaned about once a year. 9. The remote control is worryingly one of the dirtiest things in your house so be sure to disinfect it or give it a wipe down with a wet wipe. 10. Your landline phone can alarmingly become home to more germs than your toilet seat so give it a good wipe down (receiver and all) before you take that next phone call.

Diesel Diesal really needs some luck in his life. Ten years old he was thrown out by his owner when a tumour was discovered, only to be hit by a car, which broke his leg. Rescued by APAH he was restored to full health and is now a happy dog who loves the company of people. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like cats, but gets on well with female dogs. If you want to give a home to an older dog, Diesal could be the dog for you.

Dolly is around 2 years old, looks like a chihuahua cross and although a quiet little girl is very loving and affectionate. She is good with other dogs and weighs approx 6 kilos. Dolly is vaccinated, sterilised and negative for Mediterranean diseases.

Lola is approximately 1 year old and appears to have some labrador looks and tendencies. Lola is charming, warm and friendly. She loves to play and shows interest in other dogs. She walks well on a lead and is very clean. Vaccinated, wormed, micro chipped, passported and ready to go.

Ford keeping mum about 2018 Kuga THE KUGA is one of Ford’s best-selling models. The car is available in Europe as well as in the US under a different name. The ongoing generation has been around since 2012. However, this is actually a heavy update of the first generation which was released back in 2008. Since then it didn’t change as much as it should have. During the updates, the Kuga became a rather dull crossover which is a heavy contrast in comparison to the first model that was one of the best-driving crossovers around. For the upcoming 2018 Ford Kuga it seems that things could change for the better once again. So far Ford hasn’t released any official details about it. Despite that, industry experts, as well as inside sources, did say a few things about it. For starters, the new model could be based on the same platform as the Fusion or at least an evolution of it. The same chassis will also underpin the new Focus. Thanks to it, the new Kuga’s weight is set to decrease; its structural rigidity will be greatly improved while the space inside the cabin should increase.

The 2018 Ford Kuga is definitely going to share its design scheme with the revamped Edge, although its trademark massive windshield, as well as the hatchback-like roofline, are most likely going to stay though. The base engine is likely going to be a 1.5 litre EcoBoost. Even though it will share its displacement with the older generation, it won’t have much in common. In fact, this

engine would be Ford’s new 3 cylinder turbo which is capable of anything between 150 to 200 horsepower and north of 200 lb-ft of torque. Glorious weather but where’s the wind?

FOR THE fifth week running no wind and a flat calm Mar Menor greeted the SAMM competitors as they arrived for the racing on October 8, so yet again the morning race did not start until 12 noon. In only three to four knots of wind seven boats started, and Julian Singleton, Topaz Duo, was soon in the lead which he gradually increased as the race progressed. The rest of the fleet followed and soon it was a procession of with only two changes of position when Di Hardwick / Jack Moss in Gamba, passed Norman Vener in Laser Radial, during lap two; and then Tim Wills /

Tug Wilson in Laser 2000, also passed Norman during lap three. Mick Burgess in Sea Hopper, retired after lap two as he was so far behind. The Race Officer shortened the race from four to three laps due to the time it was taking with Julian the only boat finishing in under an hour. The afternoon race started at 2.30pm by which time the wind had increased to a perfect eight to 10 knots. This time it was Tug and Tim who took the lead closely followed by Julian and, although the lead changed from time to time, Tug and Tim always completed each lap a few seconds ahead. It was a

great tussle to watch. A similar battle was taking place further down the field between the Gambas of Vernon O’Byrne / John Down and Jack / Di, where again just seconds separated them as each lap was completed. In this race four boats finished four laps in just under the hour. Results after applying the handicaps were: Morning race: Julian Singleton, Topaz Duo; Di Hardwick /Jack Moss, Gamba; Julian Pering / Nick Novak, Sailfish 18. Afternoon race: Vernon O’Byrne / John Down, Gamba; Julian Singleton, Topaz Duo; Jack Moss / Di Hardwick, Gamba.

Rockets Golf Society WONDERFUL HOT and sunny weather greeted the Society’s October home game on the Vistabella course which provided a well manicured course and greens in a very good condition. The results for the day were: Gold Category – Winner was Rodney Smith with 36 points; runner-up on 35 points was Seamus Martn and third spot was claimed with 33 points by Arfer Williams. Silver Category - Winner Ken Hopkins (36); runner-up was new member Andy Stenning (33) and Rocket Ron in third place (30). Nearest the Pins were P. Daggatt (4th hole), A. Stenning (7th), and P. Mutter (16th)

Longest Drive was achieved by Rodney Smith and the best guest performance was by C. Johnson The next game is on Tuesday October 24 and is for the Ivy Davies Perpetual Trophy. Ivy was one of the founder members of the Rockets Golf Society and is still sadly missed by everyone. The golf day will be followed by food and the presentations at Bar Patricia in Torreta 3. He currently leads Sebastian Vettel by 59 points with four races remaining, including Sunday’s. Also it’s the Australian MotoGP from Phillip Island and there’ll be just two more races after this one – in Kuala Lumpur next Sunday and here in Valencia on 12 November. There are three tennis tournaments starting on the 23 October: The Erste Bank Open, Vienna; the Swiss Indoors, Basel and the WTA World Tour finals, Singapore. They all end on 29 October. The Rugby World Cup begins on 27 October with Australia v England. Twenty four hours later it’s Fiji-USA, New Zealand-Samoa and Papua New Guinea-Wales, followed on 29 with France-Lebanon, Ireland-Italy and Scotland-Tonga. Having won the championship for the first time in over 100 years, the Chicago Cubs will attempt to retain their World Series Baseball crown: 24 October-1 November. Several of the world’s top golfers tee-off today in the four-day WGC/HSBC Championship in Shanghai. Arsenal lost 2-1 at Watford; Spurs beat Bournemouth 1-0 and Liverpool drew 0-0 with Manchester United. Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso won last Sunday’s Japanese MotoGP. Marc Marquez was second with Danilo Petrucci third. Marquez leads the riders’ championship by 11 points. In Rugby’s Champions Cup, there were group wins for Bath, Exeter, Leinster, Saracens, Toulon and Ulster (over Wasps).
