by Tahnee Wright RESIDENTS IN Benidorm can now ‘go green’ and ‘go pink’ at the same time. For the third year running, Benidorm City Council has teamed up with Ecovidrio to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common

cancer among women. Symptoms include a lump or thickening of the breast and changes to the skin or the nipple. Risk factors can be genetic, but some lifestyle factors, such as alcohol intake, make it more likely to happen. A range of treatments is available, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

In Benidorm, eight pink recycling bins – specifically for glass - have been installed at four points across the city and for each kilo of glass recycled, the city will donate €1 to Fundacion Sandra Ibarra. Fundacion Sandra Ibarra is a nonprofit cancer organisation whose objective is to promote research and awareness in order to fulfil the dream

that cancer can be cured. Benidorm is one of 18 cities across Spain taking part in the initiative and the recycling bins can be found on Plaza SSMM Reyes de Espana, the section of Avenida Mediterraneo closest to Plaza Triangular, at the intersection of avenidas Bilbao and Alcoi and at the intersection of avenidas Beniarda and Alfonso Puchades.

Access to popular cave will be restricted A COMPANY from Altea will take to the Cova Tallada on a five-month study to determine suitable access restrictions for visitors by foot. The emblematic cave receives an exceptionally high number of tourists, especially throughout the summer season and last year, the number of hikers who had to be rescued was “uncountable”. The study has been commissioned by Montgo Natural Park as they work to increase security in and around the Cova Tallada. A 65-YEAR-OLD cyclist was left seriously injured after being hit by a car whilst cycling from Javea to Benitachell. According to police sources, the British man was heading towards Benitachell at around 9.15am on Monday morning when a car went to overtake him and hit him. The Information and

Emergency Coordination Center (CICU) reported the cyclist to have suffered a fractured femur and said he may also have fractured his hip. The passenger of the car was also treated for injuries. Both were taken by ambulance to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud.

THREE Marina Alta municipalities will benefit from the rollout of Hidraqua’s new online alert system. The new system will inform Hidraqua customers of incidents caused by water outages, both scheduled and caused by malfunctions. Until now, Hidraqua’s ‘Servialertas’ has allowed customers to receive information including invoices and overconsumption warnings, but the new online alert system will now allow customers to receive information regarding network cuts, including expected start and finish dates/ times.

by Tahnee Wright JAVEA’S emergency services rescued an eagle trapped in a pine tree in the Cap Marti area. A neighbour reported the large bird being stuck in the tree – it looked as if it was injured and unable to fly. The height of the pine tree meant that firefighters had to climb the telescopic ladder on the fire engine in order to rescue the bird. Also involved in the rescue operation

was another neighbour with knowledge of falconry. Upon reaching the bird, firefighters found that it had its foot caught in a bundle of plastics/ threads usually used for gardening – which was stopping it from flying. The large bird was brought down from the tree and was taken to the Generalitat’s bird rescue where it will be nursed back to full health. Javea’s emergency services thanked citizens for their collaboration in the rescue operation.

A WAVE of wildfires has killed at least 35 people and injured more than 50 in Portugal and across the Spanish border. More than 500 fires were declared last weekend andat the time of printing, thousands of firefighters were still working to extinguish the flames. The wildfires have been exacerbated by Hurricane Ophelia approaching Europe’s western coast, bringing strong

winds increasing the ferocity of the flames The fires caused the greatest impact in central and north Portugal. In Spain, the wildfires broke out across the border in the Galicia region. Alberto Nunez Feijoo, the leader of Galicia, said that many of the fires had started as acts of arson. “The only thing we desire is that these criminals pay for what they have done,” he told a news conference. However, it has emerged that two weeks ago, Galicia dismissed 436 for-

est rangers who had been hired on temporary contracts over the summer months. When he was asked to justify the decision, Feijoo said that the risk of fire along the Atlantic coast had “lowered significantly.” On Monday Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is from Galicia, travelled to his home region. Rajoy also suggested that arson was behind the fires. “It’s impossible that this could have happened in normal conditions,” he said.

More than 200 volunteers took part in a huge coastal clean operation last Sunday organised by Denia’s Department of Environment. This year’s figures are yet to be confirmed, although Councillor of Environment Josep Crespo was delighted to announce the coast was much cleaner than last year, when 325 kilograms of waste - including 198 kilograms of plastic, 111 kilograms of metal, 7 kilograms of glass and 6 kilograms of cardboard was collected. A total of 218 volunteers were deployed along the most emblematic points of Denia’s coast, from Les Marines round to Les Rotes. There were 5 boats, 29 people on the surface in kayaks and on paddelboards, as well as a 100 divers who scoured the seabed. The coastal clean began in the morning and finished at around 12.30pm, when the collected waste was deposited in containers provided by Segaplast. Amongst the collected waste was a 20 metre hydraulic hose, pulled out of the sea off Les Marines beach. Councillor Crespo attributed this year’s positive results to a number of factors – this summer’s lower index of rainfall – which means ravines and rivers have not brought waste down to the sea - as well as the council’s work to raise awareness about the need to be respectful.

by Fabio Delucci PARKING ON the streets of Les Rotes became ‘residents only’ earlier this year and Les Rotes residents were told to apply for permits at an annual cost of €14. The measure was implemented as parking in some parts of Les Rotes was prohibited and residents complained

of being unable to find parking spaces as tourists descended on the area. The local government recently announced that the cost to renew the resident’s permits has been halved to €7 from €14 for cars and renewal will be free for motorbikes, mopeds and bicycles. Any residents applying for a new resident’s permit will still be required to pay €14.

The idea was to encourage tourists to park in the car parks, however some Les Rotes residents have complained that this has not happened and they are paying €14 a year and are still unable to find parking spaces from Easter through the high summer season. Acting on the complaints, the local police ensured enforcement this summer and were seen issuing fines to non-obeying tourists of up to €200.

DIRECTOR GENERAL of the High Health Inspectorate of the Consol Consolvisleria de Sanidad Isabel Gonzalez vis ited the various health centres across the Marina Alta this week. Gonzalez has been inspecting the health centres together with her team, taking note of any deficiencies concesor any potential breaches by conces sionaire Marina Salud. On Tuesday, she visited the health centre in Ondara on Avenida Marina Alta and was concerned over staffing levels. Gonzalez met with the health centre’s general managers, together Ondara Mayor Jose Ramiro and other members of Ondara council. She heard how staffing levels are at an all-time low, with no provisions in place to cover staff when they are on annual leave or sick. There is only one paediatrician at the health centre attending to over 1,400 children – 400 children more than the recommend maximum of 1,000 per paediatrician. Ondara health centre’s paedia-

AT THE Alfaz International Day on Sunday 15 October, the U3A Marina Baixa provided an abundance of calories, in the form of homemade cakes and savouries. Members arrived at the stall throughout the day, donating cakes for sale, all of which proved to be popular with the numerous nationalities attending the event. The weather was glorious and the atmosphere was one of fun and harmony, with the cakes raising €125 for the Ayuntamiento’s chosen charities. Fair for foodies More Parcent this weekend

THIS SATURDAY, the first ever ‘EL CABAS’ agricultural and homemade food fair will be held on Plaza del Porxes and Calle Mig in Teulada’s old town. Councillor Nieves Rodriguez and Daniel Ibanco presented the first edition of the fair, which the council intends on making a regular event. The fair has been designed to encourage fair-goers to buy their food as their ancestors did and respect the environment. 30 local and regional producers will present their products and all fair-goers who make a purchase will receive a free ‘EL CABAS’ tote bag. All products sold at the event come “from the land, to the table”, grown and made by the producers themselves. The fair offers fun for all the family from 10.00am – 2.00pm, with live music, presentations and workshops.

A FINAL reminder that Parcent are having their weekend (20th - 22nd October) of activities in the village, titled ´More Parcent´´starting with the inauguration of an art exhibition by Spanish women artists ´’Four women with palette and brush’ on Friday at 7.30 pm at the Musical building. ‘Stanza Alacant’ an associate of London’s Poetry Society will be at the Feria with a selection of their member’s publications - including their delightful anthology ‘Red Rock Dreaming’ featuring member’s poetry, catching the ambience and colour of the Marina Alta and Marina Baja. Various members will also be offering their collections for sale. On Saturday and Sunday there will be a art, craft and food fair held in the village square, featuring craft workshops with free participation, craft stalls, work by

local artists and book stalls. Craft workshops for children followed by traditional hot chocolate and a storytelling performance will be held from 4pm on saturday and sunday, all activities are free. The artesan food stalls include locally made wine, olive oil, cakes and pastries, cheese, honey and artesan beers and ciders. There will be a performance of a Muixeranga, the Valencian folk tradition of forming human towers on Saturday at 6.30 followed by bring your own supper in the square and the Parcent youth band will play on Sunday at 6.30. There will be a bar and food stall in the Square selling barbeque sausages for breakfast and traditional paella for lunch on Sunday. Young piano star wows crowd by Fabio Delucci THE TEULADA-MORAIRA Auditori was alive last weekend as it played host to the International Piano Festival. The festival welcomed 18-year-old Carlos Santo Martinez back to Spain after performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Caruth Auditorium in Dallas, Schumann Saal in Dusseldorf and Sumy Philharmonic Hall in Ukraine, amongst others. Carlos - who was only 11 years old when he started to play a Steinway & Sons grand piano - wowed the crowd, playing The Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach and Kreisleriana by Robert Schumann, two of the most complex works ever written, rarely played in the same recital. The young man first took stage at the International Piano Fesitval when he was just 13 and was delighted to return some five years later to share his talents with Teulada-Moraira once again. THE €72,000 redevelopment works on Javea’s avenida Lepanto in Duanes de la Mar have now begun. The works are expected to be completed within two months, if not sooner. The area will be restructured, with a new parking lot providing more spaces. Once the works on avenida Lepanto are completed, the council will take to the Puente de Triana, carrying out further improvements to complete the redevelopment to the port area of the town, improving access for

all near the Casco Historico and the Arenal. Mayor Jose Chulvi said: “In recent years, the Javea fishing district has been the scene of various urban redevelopment works - such as the improvements to calle Caleta, the asphalting of plaza Adolfo Suarez, lighting improvements etc. Some works have been necessary given storm damage and others have been in the interest of the municipality as it continues to attract more and more tourists each high summer season.”

SPAIN’S Interior Ministry confirmed the Guardia Civil arrested a 21-year-old Spanish woman who allegedly recruited other women to join Daesh in conflict areas. It said the woman is also accused of self-radicalisation by consuming IS propaganda and establishing online networks with other jihadi activists, mostly women. The ministry said Guardia Civil officers arrested the woman on Tuesday in Palamos, a coastal town in the north-eastern Catalonia region, in an operation assisted by the FBI. The woman was allegedly part of a global network that police have been dismantling for two years. Spanish police have arrested 206 suspected jihadi activists since Spain raised its national security alert to one step below the maximum in mid-2015.

Two motorbike accidents in 12 hours

by Rose Holmes One motorcyclist was killed and another injured in two separate incidents that occurred within 12 hours of each other on Tuesday morning. In the early hours of the morning,

a 50-year-old man was killed as his motorbike collided with a car on the AP-7 motoway near Gata de Gorgos. Emergency services arrived at the scene within minutes and medics and medics tried to resuscitate the motorcyclist without success. The second incident occurred just before 10.00am on the CV-700 road,

just 100 metres from the El Verger exit. A young man from Ondara lost control of his motorbike, for reasons unknown and fell into a ditch. At first, emergency services though the motorcyclist was trapped but they managed to bring him to safety and an ambulance took him to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud.

A German cruise ship arrived in Denia on Sunday night and nearly 500 passengers made their way into the town on Monday morning. The ship - ‘Amadea’ was anchored outside of Denia marina due to its size and passengers were ferried into the town on small boats. The 29,008-ton, 624-

passenger cruise ship arrived with little fuss in comparison to when it arrived some three years ago and was met by the mayor. As passengers disembarked, around 100 of them stayed in Denia whilst the others caught buses to Alicante, Calpe, Javea and Valencia.

Terra Natura celebrates Halloween TERRA NATURA Benidorm will transform its aviary into a ‘voodoo jungle’ to celebrate Halloween. Special events are planned until November 1 – including face painting every day from 10.30am and a ‘fairy school’ from 12.00pm. ‘Mumia’s Rock Musical’ will take to the stage every day and next Saturday October 28, a musical parade will circle the park. The fun doesn’t end there – guests can enjoy various presentations and workshops, including the flight of the birds of prey, pony rides and a how-to in the elephant enclosure. The court heard how the accused and a client of his – an appliance store - falsified expenses amounting to €82,839 – across nine fake invoices from a third company with which they both had a business relationship. The investigation began in 2011 when the owner of the third company was sanctioned for not declaring the €82,839 profits in his quarterly accounts. The owner of the third company proved that the nine fake invoices had never been raised. The accountant appealed the sentence - which was originally handed down by a court in Benidorm in September 2016 – but the judge ruled this week that there is “more than enough evidence” to prove his part in the crime. The Provincial Court ruled that, although the accountant was not the

PUIG CAMPANA: The second highest peak in the Alicante Province

by Tahnee Wright FINESTRAT COUNCIL recently presented a pioneering project to improve safety, conservation and promotion of the Puig Campana. The Puig Campana is a mountain that forms part of the Prebaetic System, with an altitude of 1,406 metres. Known amongst locals as the ‘Sleeping Giant’, it is the second highest peak in the Alicante Province, located in Finestrat just 10 kilometres from the coast. Finestrat Mayor Juan Francisco Perez presented the project to the Diputacion de Alicante, which includes providing Wi-Fi access to all hiking routes on the mountain – improving hiker’s safety whilst allowing them to share their ex-

periences in real time via social media. Diputacion de Alicante Vice President Eduardo Dolon was delighted with the project and confirmed that Finestrat will receive a grant from the Diputacion – which will be quantified in the coming weeks: “Finestrat Council knows what it wants. It has a very clear strategic plan that the Diputacion has committed to support. “The only project like this so far has been the implementation of Wi-Fi on Benidorm’s beaches. The Diputacion considers it essential to go one step further and expand its scope of action in the Province, which we will now do with Finestrat.”

Bank managers sent down FOUR former managers of Spanish savings bank Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo (CAM) were sentenced to prison by the country’s High Court on Tuesday after being found guilty of false accounting and misleading investors about the

two years, nine months and a day. Spain’s High Court said the managers were convicted due to actions it said distorted the bank’s accounts and balance sheets and damaged CAM’s image during a period of economic and financial crisis.

Pilot killed in second Spanish military crash

A Spanish Air Force F-18 combat jet crashed on Tuesday morning at the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase in Madrid.

The Ministry of Defence said the pilot was killed on impact in the accident likely caused by engine failure.

The accident took place during take-off and rescue teams confirmed that the pilot – 26-year-old Lieutenant Fernando Perez Serrano from Murcia – was unable to exit the cockpit in time. The plane is said to have crashed against a parapet located at the end of the runway and barely managed to get any lift – just 50 metres – before plummeting to the ground. The Ministry of Defence pointed to “a loss of power” as the reason for the crash. Sources also added that the mechanics had warned that the engine of the F-18 made a strange noise. The accident came less than a week after another Spanish military aircraft crashed last Thursday - a pilot was killed when his plane crashed as he was returning to base after participating in a flyby as part of the National Day military parade.

Members of Javea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine group really did enjoy the best of both worlds when they ventured inland on a recent day trip. The party of 53, led by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, visited a historic palace, enjoyed lunch at a typically Spanish country restaurant and ended their day in a brewery. The coach tour began with a guided tour round the beautifully restored El Palacio de Condes de Cervellon and gardens in the historic town of Anna. Refurbishment of the building, which boasts architecture akin to the Alhambra in Granada, was completed in 2007 and is now a Heritage Centre. It contains some stunning features including magnificent ceilings and artefacts as well as some beautiful pieces of furniture and famous old paintings. The party then enjoyed lunch at the nearby Restaurante Ananda before moving on to La Socarrada brewery

U3A Marina Baixa supports local charity For the last couple of months, U3A Members have been busy collecting plastic bottle tops, for a 9 year old boy, who has multiple brain tumours. His father is a local police officer in Benidorm and his mother is relentless in her efforts to help her son. Maureen Barrett from U3A delivered the bottle tops to Karen Cowles, the President of the Benidorm British Business Association, who will take them to the collection point at Benidorm police station. The couple have set up a registered charity, to raise funds for their son´s operation, which will hopefully be carried out in January or February 2018 but they still need to raise a further 50,000 euros. The Costa del Sol Adventures Jack Levy stepped out of the police car and pulled a face. “This? This is the place?” Lagos lay in a nondescript bay between Malaga and Nerja. The morning air was warm but the sea was rough. It rolled in diagonally, grouchy, as though it hadn´t slept well. Dan Sánchez tried to look positive. “He´ll be here. Let´s get your wife´s ring and get this whole thing finished up.” The bar was locked so they clambered over a wall near a children´s playground and dodged a smelly, grinning tramp who walked past and bade them good morning. The tide was high and the uneven beach played hell with Levy´s bad knees. He cursed loudly, more so when Sánchez led him up the narrow, stone steps to an empty terrace bar. As Levy screamed in frustration, Sánchez spotted a note flapping on one of the tables, weighed down by an empty beer bottle. Your real enemies are not aliens, terrorists or armies, Mr Levy, the note read. Your real enemy is Monsieur Olivier Bouche of Aix-en-Provence. The ring is false. The love of your wife is real. Love,Pedro Ramirez. Half an hour earlier Costa had finished his beer and the note and stretched in the blustery wind. His limbs were bruised, one eye half-closed, cheek purple. Walking down the steps he´d shouted in surprise, pointing into wet sand where the waves were retreating, calling out to the sad old Scot. “Look! Look what I´ve found.” Leaving the tramp staring at the ring like it was his wife herself, Costa del Sol gunned his launch and set off across the rough, rolling waves. Mr Rabinovich would be waking up now, bound and gagged. Costa would make him tell him where that woman was if it was the last thing he´d ever do.

Part 2 On November 6 and 7, 1917 (or October 24 and 25 on the Julian calendar, which is why the event is often referred to as the October Revolution), leftist revolutionary’s members of the Bolshevik Party Led by Leon Trotsky a Marxist revolutionary, theorist, and Soviet politician. Initially supporting the Menshevik Internationalists faction within the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, he joined the Bolsheviks (“majority”) just before the 1917 October Revolution, immediately becoming a leader within the Communist Party. He would go on to become one of the seven members of the first Politburo, founded in 1917 to manage the Bolshevik Revolution.[2] During the early days of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and the Soviet Union, he served first as People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army, with the title of People’s Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs along Vladimir Lenin launched a nearly bloodless coup d’état against the Duma’s provisional government.

The Red Army fought for the Lenin’s Bolshevik government. The White Army represented a large group of loosely al allied forces, including monarchists, capi capitalists and supporters of democratic socialism. The Russian Civil War ended in 1923 with Lenin’s Red Army claiming vic victory and establishing the Soviet Union. Bolsheviks, led by leftist revolution revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, seized power and destroyed the tradition of Czarist rule. The Bolsheviks would later become the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most explosive political events of the twentieth century. The violent revolution had marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of Russian Imperial rule. After leading a failed struggle of the left opposition against the policies and the rise of a new dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1920s, and against the increasing role of the bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was removed from power in October 1927, and expelled from the Communist Party the next month. And then exiled from Russia in February 1929. As the head of the Fourth International brigade, Trotsky continued to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union from exile. On 20

August 1940, Trotsky was assassinated by Ramón Mercader, a Spanish-born NKVD agent, passing away the next day in a hospital. Mercader, who attacked Trotsky with an Ice axe, acted upon instruction from Stalin and was nearly beaten to death by Trotsky’s bodyguards, with Mercader spending 20 years in a Mexican prison for murdering Trotsky. Stalin presented Mercader with an Order of Lenin. The last remaining Communist countries are still Russia, and China, but in both cases the Redness of their flags have faded to a much paler colour, as the Russian and Chinese workers know the colour of their money in the bank, is more important to them than the colour of their flags. Cuba the first new Communist country since the Russian revolution, is now beginning to slowly become a democracy. P.S. My Fathers Parents where white Russians, the family name was Mendelovitch, this was changed just before I was born, on my mother side was my Grandmother who brought me up from a baby, she was a white Russian also, and called me a Bolshevik (Bolshie) when I was a bad.

Britain´s ghost navy AS RECENTLY as the 1960s Britain’s Merchant Navy was the largest in the world. It was said that 350,000 British seaman and officers served under the Red Ensign. The Ellerman shipping company alone boasted that it could put a ship into any port in the world within 24-hours. Formed in 1892 with £800,000 one of the world’s greatest maritime fleets collapsed in 2004. Proportionately, British seamen suffered higher losses during WWII than did RAF Bomber Command. When in 1941 the Red Army was beaten back to the gates of Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad, Churchill and U.S. President Roosevelt appropriated Britain’s merchant navy and rushed aid to the Bolsheviks. Rescuing Bolshevism sank 101 British merchant ships and cost the lives of 3,000 British seamen. In total, 30,248 British sailors lost their lives during WWII. Up until 1966 70,000 cadets attended the 3-month training courses at the school for seamanship in Sharpness. There was a similar school on Gravesend. Today, just 250 ratings are being trained, mostly for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, an arm of the Royal Navy.

I was admiring shirts in one of the ubiquitous sales at Zenia Boulevard the other day, when the Princess, fresh from her own browsing, tapped me on the shoulder and suggested solemnly that I had more than enough shirts already taking up valuable space. I couldn’t help noticing that she was toting a suspiciously large Zara bag at the time, but I said nothing. But she was right, and I resolved then and there to have a good old sort out when we got home. I am always grateful for my wife’s help when deciding what to keep and what to donate to charity or chuck out. “You haven’t worn that since we got married”, she might say. “So?” “That was thirty eight years ago.” “Fair point” I would concede. “But you never know.” And so it will go on until I

make what I consider the minimum amount of concessions, and she is happy that at least a small clearing has been made in the forest of menswear. Then I get to the sock drawer and I know what I will find, or more to the point what I will not find, because there will be an assortment of socks without partners. What is it with this sock thing? Sometimes of course the missing piece of footwear is easily explained; either stuck to the drum of the washing machine, or inadvertently left in the bottom of the linen basket. Mine occasionally show up in the cat’s basket and once I found one in my lunch box between two pieces of wholegrain bread and garnished with tomato and lettuce, but that was just the Princess having a joke. I split my sides laughing. But most of the time it’s as if they had never existed and

simply disappear off the face of the earth. And it’s always the better quality ones that vanish; a Nike or a Pringle of Scotland for example, never the three pairs for five euro jobs. And apart from the exceptions mentioned, they never turn up – ever. Is this some mysterious intergalactic practice? A kinky alien race abducting odd footwear for their own perverted ends? IN THE last article we started turning our verbs from first person “I” forms to second person “you” forms, and we distinguished between tú and usted, that is the informal and extra-polite ways of expressing “you” in Spanish. Since the beginning of these articles we have been looking at these as part of a particular kind of sentence – that is, linking them to other verbs to express intentions, obligations and preferences. However, verbs are not always used in this way, so today we are going to remind ourselves briefly of how they can be used in other simple ways, and gently extend our range of possibilities. I’ll throw a few new words in, but you should be well able to cope with this by now!

There’s a chance none of that makes any sense at all – so let’s get down to practicalities and give you a range of real examples. For example – the verb querer (to want). Quiero viajar a Beijing. I want to travel to Beijing. ¿Quieres comprar un coche nuevo? Do you want to buy a new car? - informal ¿No quiere estudiar más? Don’t you want to study any more? – formal But not forgetting the simpler use of this verb. No quiero más postre, gracias. I don’t want any more pudding, thank you.

In this last example, given that the formal form is being used, the correct translation is really “What would you like?” as that is what we would actually say in English. Notice that the word usted is optional, but it sometimes gets put in to make the sentence sound more courteous. I can’t resist a little digression here, even though it’s not strictly relevant to what we are looking at. It is in answer to the question – can’t the verb querer also mean “to love”? Yes it can. It also means “to love” in the romantic, personal sense, not in the sense of loving fish and chips. Therefore, te quiero means “I love you”. It can also mean “I want you”. I don’t think we’re going to go any further down this road at the moment. We can go through the same sort of process with necesitar “to need”. Necesito firmar estos papeles. I need to sign these papers. ¿Necesitas un descanso? Do you need a break? No necesita tomar más medicamento. You don’t need to take any more medicine.

PreParaTIOn Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 20 minutes. dIreCTIOns 1. In a shallow dish or bowl, mix together the flour, salt, pepper and oregano. Coat chicken pieces in flour mixture. 2. In a large frying pan, melt butter in oil over medium heat. Place chicken in the pan, and lightly brown. Turn over chicken pieces, and add mushrooms. Pour in wine and sherry. Cover frying pan; simmer chicken 10 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink and juices run clear.

Fresh Strawberry Granita IngredIenTs 2 pounds ripe strawberries, hulled and halved, 1/3 cup white sugar, or to taste, 1 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (optional), 1/4 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional), 1 tiny pinch salt PreParaTIOn Preparation time – 10 minutes. ready in 2 hours 25 minutes. MeThOd 1. rinse strawberries with cold water; let

drain. Transfer berries to a blender and add sugar, water, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and salt. 2. Pulse several times to get the mixture moving, then blend until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour into a large baking dish. Puree should only be about 3/8 inch deep in the dish. 3. Place dish uncovered in the freezer until mixture barely begins to freeze around the edges, about 45 minutes. Mixture will still be slushy in the centre.

4. Lightly stir the crystals from the edge of the granita mixture into the centre, using a fork, and mix thoroughly. Close freezer and chill until granita is nearly frozen, 30 to 40 more minutes. Mix lightly with a fork as before, scraping the crystals loose. repeat freezing and stirring with the fork 3 to 4 times until the granita is light, crystals are separate, and granita looks dry and fluffy. 5. Portion granita into small serving bowls to serve.

Lamb Korma

Ingredients 2 & 1/4 pounds cubed lamb meat, 4 teaspoons olive oil, divided, 1 brown onion, chopped. 1 red potato, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup curry powder, 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup drained canned chickpeas Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 1 hour and 15 minutes. Method 1. Place lamb in a bowl and drizzle 2 teaspoons olive oil over lamb; stir until coated. 2. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in a saucepan over low heat; cook and stir onion until

softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and add potato to onion. 3. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat; cook and stir lamb, working in small batches, until browned, about 5 minutes per batch. Transfer browned lamb to onion mixture. 4. Stir curry into lamb-onion mixture and cook over medium heat for 1 minute. Add water to lamb-onion mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover saucepan, and simmer until lamb is cooked through and potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes. 5. Mix coconut milk and chickpeas into lamb-onion mixture and simmer until heated through, about 5 minutes.

WHAT COULD be more pleasant than holidaying on the shores of Golden Pond, New England as cantankerous retiree Norman Thayer and his conciliatory wife Ethel have done for the past 48 years? Only this year, their adult daughter Chelsea visits with her new fiancee and his teenage son, Billy - partly to celebrate Norman’s birthday, but mainly because they want to leave Billy there, in order to holiday alone in Europe. Norman is grumpy at the best of times, fearful he’s losing his faculties, so he’s not best pleased at having his holiday disrupted, having to entertain a child – he’s never really got on with children. Loving wife Ethel understands and compensates for her husband’s weaknesses: she gives subtle guidance, is the caregiver and confidence booster: Dulcinea to his Don Quijote! When Chelsea returns from Europe, she’s envious of Billy’s relationship with her father, who share a warmth she never had, but now tries to capture before it’s too late. Fiancé Charlie, the postman and telephone operator all play

their part in the denouement of the plot which revolves around long-lost youth and facing one’s mortality. Despite that, there are some very funny moments, not least the decision as to whether Chelsea and her fiancé should be allowed to sleep together under Norman’s roof. HUGH EPSON and his team have just staged the Javea Players´ Open Day . The event on Sunday 15th October was opened by the Councillor for Culture, Quico Moragues, with a toast to the Javea Players´ next 40 years, he said that their contribution to the cultural life of the town is greatly appreciated by his department. Since their formation by Janet Philips in 1976 the company has not only enjoyed an ever growing reputation on stage but has built, year on year, the back stage facilities and skills that are demanded for the staging of top quality productions. These were on show at their Open Day. The pinnacle of their achievements is the Players’ Studio Theatre in the heart of Javea Old Town. It is a lovely little theatre, truly comfortable, cosy, hospitable and professionally equipped. Recently improved with more effective air conditioning, new curtain tracks, new drops in the wings, backstage working lights and improved emergency exit. The Players stage productions demand a bigger stage in Gata than that of their Studio Theatre, they have now built a spacious home for their huge and valuable costume wardrobe and their treasure trove of props. At the Open Day interesting displays of both were on display. The scenery store and workshop, also at Gata, has had the benefit of improvements since their 40th birthday, including a new tool store, a lighting equipment store and a new work bench. Sunday’s event invited visitors to get involved in all aspects of stage craft – make-up, sound, lighting, singing, acting, even play writing. The Javea Players now have their own playwright in residence, the award winning Phil Mansell. Poor Yorick, his play, will be the Javea Players’ Summer Show next year. Those who had a chat with Phil last Sunday discovered, he is keen to encourage and help budding playwrights. Visitors very much enjoyed going behind the scenes and there was no doubt that the Javea Players hugely enjoyed their company.

A SMALL post on Javea Connect in February, asking if anyone was interested in doing an amateur fun production of The Rocky Horror Show resulted in interest way beyond the expectations of the original poster, Darien Bowie. The idea took off immediately and rehearsals have been in full swing since March. With a great cast , enthusiastic and dynamic directors and producers and a whole team of people with solid knowledge of their particular skill The Rocky Javea Picture ShowIs is coming and it will hopefully be “awesome”. Afa Algea Algae form the primeval start to all life; they are rootless and leafless plants. Many types divide themselves millions of times per day. Make sure you find a comfortable place to sit while you use this facial steam. Relax, close your eyes and inhale

DON´T Skip moisturiser if you have oily skin. One of the biggest skin-care myths out there is that people with oily skin shouldn’t use moisturiser. But if your skin is lacking hydration, your oil glands begin to produce excess oil to compensate. This makes your skin greasier, trapping you in a cycle of slick, shiny skin. Moisturising regularly, on the other hand, can actually keep your oil production at a healthy, normal level.

Male fertility worries for future reproduction

ACCORDING to the British Medical Journal (BMJ) urgent action is needed to investigate disturbing trends in men’s reproductive health. Professor Niels Skakkebaek at the University of Copenhagen points to research showing significant declines in sperm counts among men in the Western world, and says we must act now to find out what could be causing such disturbing trends. The research reviewed thousands of studies and concluded that sperm concentration had fallen by 52 per cent among men in Western countries between 1973 and 2011. Should we be concerned? Is male reproductive health really at risk, asks Skakkebaek?

He suggests that data on the quality of semen should be interpreted alongside trends in testicular cancers, as reports suggest that countries with a high incidence of this cancer have generally lower semen quality and vice versa. Worryingly, incidence of this cancer has risen substantially over the past few decades, particularly in young men, he writes. What could be causing such disturbing trends, he asks? The short answer is that we do not know. However, data showing that the incidence of testicular cancer has more than doubled in recent decades leaves little doubt that we should look into environmental causes – including lifestyle effects.

Studies suggest that modern lifestyles are associated with increased exposure to various endocrine disrupting chemicals such as pesticides that together may be harmful to wildlife and humans even though exposure to individual chemicals is low, he explains. However, little has been done to explore their potential effects on semen quality and testicular cancer. Should we be worried about our future ability to reproduce ourselves? He points out that more and more children are now born after fertility treatments. However, despite increased use of assisted reproduction, fertility rates in many countries remain well below the replacement rate of an average of 2.1 children per woman.

Check out that garden shed AN OVERWHELMING majority of people living in Spain will have their own garden, whatever the size, and every garden needs a faithful shed to store all those garden implements or act as an extension to their house. As another summer comes to an end, autumn brings a new set of challenges in the annual garden routine and now’s the time to check the shed contains all that’s needed.

2. Start from scratch: Thoroughly sort through the contents of the shed, placing everything into groups such as tools, pots and planters, seeds and so on. Get rid of any duplicates and decide which items in each group are used more than others. 3. A place for everything: Keep each shelf well organised by using clear boxes to store the contents so you can easily identify what lives where. Try to use boxes with lids where possible to

sharp blades away from surfaces.

4. Green fingered: If you have space, placing a potting table or bench inside the shed will mean you can work on your garden even when it’s raining. Opt for one with at least two shelves to maximise storage beneath and try to keep the surface clear of clutter.

7. Get creative: Make your own garden twine dispenser by punching a hole through the lid of a jam jar, placing a ball of twine inside and then pulling it out through the hole to stop it from tangling up.

5. Planning: Hang an annual planner on the wall of your shed so you can fill out the various garden tasks that need to be completed throughout the year. Choose one with a wipeable board so you can write on when you last planted certain seeds or fertilised the grass. 6. How dirty is your casa? Forget the Spring Cleaning which was a regular task when people lived in the UK. After another Spanish summer which has probably seen many hibernate in their villas and apartments with the air-conditioning full on, more time has been spent indoors and left a feeling of being ‘lived-in’. Many would’ve had visitors and many are perhaps returning to the Costa Blanca to find the results of a season of holiday rentals. While nobody wants extra tasks to add to the cleaning to-do list, there are a few jobs to do every now and again to keep homes in tip top, germ-free condition. Here are 10 things that appear, on the surface (!), to be obvious, but you might just be forgetting to clean around your home:

1.Between and under the sofa cushions: anyone who has luckily dug up a handful of euro coins from down the sofa will know what an Aladdin’s cave it can become down there. 2.Under the fridge is a magnet for dust, crumbs and those odd specks of dirt we conveniently kick out of the way when we’re cleaning the floor. Take care and ask for help if you need it to move the fridge slightly to one side and then get under there with a dust pan and brush and a damp cloth. 3.Hairbrush: you use your hairbrush on wet hair, dry hair, dirty hair, clean hair and for singing in front of the mirror, so make sure it gets a thorough clean every now and again. 4. Doorknob and switches: consider how many people touch your doorknobs in a week or a month and where those hands might have been and you may find yourself scrabbling for the disinfectant. Just a microfibre cloth dabbed with some disinfectant will do the job in no time. 5.Pillows: you lay on them every night and no doubt clean the covers regularly but

it’s often easy to forget to wash the actual pillows. 6. Under the bed: it’s just above where you sleep so it’s important to make sure that the space under your bed is clean, especially if you or someone in your family is prone to allergies. 7. Sink drains have all sorts of things hurled at them including bits of last night’s dinner so they can easily clog up. Keep them clean and flowing by pouring down a couple of spoonfuls of baking powder and then letting the hot tap run for a bit. 8. Your rug can harbour lots of bits and bobs, from nails to pet hair to the back of that earring you lost last year so it’s a good idea to Hoover it regularly and get it properly cleaned about once a year. 9. The remote control is worryingly one of the dirtiest things in your house so be sure to disinfect it or give it a wipe down with a wet wipe. 10. Your landline phone can alarmingly become home to more germs than your toilet seat so give it a good wipe down (receiver and all) before you take that next phone call.

How pets cope with loss Have you ever wondered what happens to a pet when they lose their human or animal companion? Do pets grieve? Like humans, pets too show signs that could be interpreted as grief. When an owner or fellow housemate passes away, pets may experience: • loss of appetite • change in sleep patterns • crying or searching • a need for extra attention • a generally sad demeanour But you should also note you may not witness any of these changes. Many anecdotes suggest that animals do feel what humans call ‘grief’, including an understanding that the deceased is not coming back, but there is little scientific evidence to back this up. What we do know is that many species are affected by loss and experience feelings of sadness and loneliness. Should I get another pet to keep them company? When a pet passes away it can be tempting to get another quickly, not only for your own benefit, but so your surviving pet will have another companion, but don’t rush into this. You should wait a while before introducing another pet to your cat. Remember, each pet is an individual and different species bond with each other in different ways. Dogs are sociable animals who live in family groups, so your surviving dog is

likely to adapt well to a new canine if the pair are a good match. Cats have a very different social structure to dogs and by their nature don’t always bond with other cats, even if they have lived alongside them peacefully for many years. Give your surviving cat time to adapt to life without their companion and avoid getting a new cat or kitten straight away. If, after a few months, you think your cat would be happy with a new friend, get in touch with your local rehoming centre. Rabbits are extremely sociable animals and may react badly to the death of a companion. The best thing to do is find your bunny a new partner quickly. Introductions should be carried out slowly. Only get a new pet if you feel it is the right thing for you, your family and your pets. How to help your pet Keep your surviving pet’s routine as similar as you can. Cats are unloving, if you want a loving pet get a dog Perhaps the greatest debate of modern times is whether dogs or cats make better pets and one argument on the side of dogs is that cats are unloving. Ford keeping mum about 2018 Kuga THE KUGA is one of Ford’s best-selling models. The car is available in Europe as well as in the US under a different name. The ongoing generation has been around since 2012. However, this is actually a heavy update of the first generation which was released back in 2008. Since then it didn’t change as much as it should have. During the updates, the Kuga became a rather dull crossover which is a heavy contrast in comparison to the first model that was one of the best-driving crossovers around. For the upcoming 2018 Ford Kuga it seems that things could change for the better once again. So far Ford

hasn’t released any official details about it. Despite that, industry experts, as well as inside sources, did say a few things about it. For starters, the new model could be based on the same platform as the Fusion or at least an evolution of it. The same chassis will also underpin the new Focus. Thanks to it, the new Kuga’s weight is set to decrease; its structural rigidity will be greatly improved while the space inside the cabin should increase. The 2018 Ford Kuga is definitely going to share its design scheme with the revamped Edge, although its trademark massive windshield, as well as the hatchback-like roof-

line, are most likely going to stay though. The base engine is likely going to be a 1.5 litre EcoBoost. Even though it will share its displacement with the older generation, it won’t have much in common. In fact, this engine would be Ford’s new 3 cylinder turbo which is capable of anything between 150 to 200 horsepower and north of 200 lb-ft of torque. It would replace both the old 1.5 and 1.6 litre EcoBoost engines. A 2-liter turbo four with around 275 horsepower is expected on the range topping model. In terms of

diesel, the car will likely rock an updated 2-liter turbocharged unit offering between 150 to 190 horsepower and over 300 lb-ft of torque for some versions. A 6-speed manual will remain available for the front wheel drive cars. Likely Ford’s upcoming 9 speed automatic will find its way across most of the other versions as well as the AWD cars. This will be able to offer better fuel consumption than the old 6-speed gearbox as well as better performance thanks to its closer spaced gears.
