by Tahnee Wright To celebrate International Day of Older Persons, which falls on October 1, Denia has organised an event to honour two of the town’s oldest residents. The “greats of life”, in the words of Councillor Elisabet Cardona - Francisca Serra Ferrandiz – who will celebrate her 99th birthday next month – and Juan Espi Martin, 98-years-old, will receive a commemorative diploma from the town at an event next Saturday (September 30) at the Centro Social. The theme of the International Day of Older Persons 2017 is – ‘Stepping into
the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society’ This year’s day is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences. Francisca Serra Ferrandiz was an important figure in Denia’s textile warehouses. She later emigrated to France and after spending some time in Paris, returned to Denia.
Juan Espi Martin was another important figure in Denia’s toy industry whilst practising his favourite hobby – walking on the Montgo. He used to be a tour guide and there is even a route through the park named after him. Francisca and Juan’s stories and experienced will be presented in a video narrated by TVE journalist Marisa Aeropagita before they are presented with their diplomas and a gold badge each from the town hall. Entertainment will be provided by the winners of the I Contest Denia Baila for over 60 years, Juan Frases and Josefa Palones and entry is free of charge.

Javea renews €225k Red Cross agreement
Javea has renewed its collaboration agreement with the Red Cross. The council will grant a total of €225,000 to the association in recognition of the help and support it provides citizens in the municipality. Mayor Jose Chulvi signed the agreement alongside local Red Cross President Jose Luis Domenech, local technical director Maica Aranda and Councillor of Social
Services Pepa Gisbert. The association has 1,115 members registered in Javea and more than 100 volunteers. The mayor said: "for us, this is a priority - the social benefit generated is much greater than the cost of the grant. We will continue to collaborate with the Red Cross because we have always been clear that helping and supporting people who really need it is matters to Javea.

A presentation is being held at Javea’s Soler Blasco Museum tonight since it has been just over a year since the Javea fires. The presentation will start at 7.30pm and biologists and engineers will advise what measures have been implemented and what plans are in place to minimise future risk.
PRESENTING THE PROGRAMME: Marina Alta mayors
by Rose Holmes MAYORS of the Marina Alta from Calpe, Javea, Pego and Teulada-Moraira presented the ‘Xarxa Jove Comarcal’ programme this week, designed to keep young people off the streets. The programme offers an array of activities from now through to next year. First up is a trip to Port Aventura from October 6 – October 9 for €215. The price includes transport, half-board ac-
commodation, tickets to the park and insurance. A Generalitat Jove -IVAJ accredited training course is offered to anyone interested in becoming a recreational coach. Classes will run every Saturday from October 28 – March 10, 2018 and the courses costs only €160. An event will be held in Moraira on November 4 with music workshops from 10.30am – 2.00pm offering an insight into DJing, PodCasting, compos-
ing and drumming. A talent contest for pop/ rock bands will follow from 4.30pm. For the talent contest, all band members must be younger than 30 years of age and at least half of the band must be registered in a municipality on the Marina Alta. Interested bands can register until September 29 by email - xarxajove@ macma.org or by visiting the nearest youth centre.

Five years for man who attempted to kill his wife in front of children The man who tried to kill his wife in front of their children at their home in Denia was sentenced to five years in prison by the Provincial Court of Alicante this week. The incident occurred in February last year and the man has been held in custody ever since. The court heard how one afternoon, he approached his wife and in front of their three children told her: "I'm going to kill you today” and accused her of having an affair. The woman and the children ran from the man and called the police, he then fled.
Terror suspect arrested
But the man returned hours later and seized a kitchen knife with which he tried to stab his wife. Neighbours and one of the couple’s daughters intervened and managed to protect the woman and he fled again. The man was captured by police and arrested a short while later and sent straight to prison. He pleaded guilty to the offence and did not question the five-year sentence given for attempted murder. The man will spend a further nine months in prison for the crime of ill-treatment of family members. SPAIN'S Interior Ministry says police have arrested a Pakistani man suspected of promoting terrorism and spreading Islamic jihadi propaganda on social media networks. Elderly couple in unprovoked attack
AN unprovoked attack on a zebra crossing on Benidorm’s Avenida Jaime I left an elderly couple with substantial injuries. According to the Information and Emergency Coordination Center (CICU), a 79-yearold man and a 75-year-old woman were attended to by ambulances and taken to Clinica Benidorm. The man is said to have broken his hip and the woman is said to have suffered brain damage and a possible fracture in her back. More information regarding the attack is yet to be released.
Improvement required MEMBERS of Circulo Podemos visited Javea’s health centres to assess their disabled access. Major deficiencies were found at the centre on the Plaza de la Constitucion – which opened in 1987 including lack of disabled parking spaces, high pavements and the fact there is only one lift.

Fatality in tree crash A 40-YEAR-OLD woman from El Verger died in a car crash on the road from Ondara to Denia. The driver crashed her car into a tree near the Pont de Fusta, just
a few metres from the fire station. Firefighters managed to free the woman from the car and medics tried to resuscitate her but without success.
A SECOND plague of Vietnamese pigs arrived in Javea’s Saladar last month and continued to breed in force, making their way down to the Muntanyar urbanisation. Until last week, residents were still waiting for the problem to be addressed by the council but as of Wednesday this week, the pigs seem to have miraculously disappeared. It is rumoured that the pigs have been rehomed in Ma-
drid but it has not transpired if they have been rehomed privately or by a refuge. The plague of pigs grew exponentially as many people were feeding them. Some of the pigs were even deformed caused by interbreeding. Rachael Macdonald, who rescued the first lot of pigs that arrived in Javea earlier this year said that if the second lot of pigs are to return, people should refrain from feeding them, especially as it tempts the pigs closer to the
Booted out for being a bad singer Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson has revealed she was kicked out of a karaoke bar for her terrible singing during an alcohol-induced night in the city. The 67-year-old actress, best known for roles in Coronation Street (1993– 1997, 2006), Crossroads (2001–2003), and Emmerdale (2004–2006) was partying with co-stars after filming the new series when she took to the stage to sing Carl Douglas’s 1974 No1 Kung Fu Fighting. Sherrie told the English press: “Karaoke’s a big thing there but you have to be a good singer. “All the singers in all the bars come at

Denia market offers home-delivery by Tahnee Wright Denia’s municipal market introduced a home-delivery scheme this week. For only €2, shoppers can have their fresh, quality produce delivered to their doors thanks to the collaboration between the market itself, the Town Hall and ecomessajeria Rodando, who have provided a bike courier service in Denia for many years. With the environment in mind, deliveries will be made by bike or electric van. The initiative was presented by Councillor Javier Scotto and Director of ecomessajeria Rodando Sergio Laffitte. 30 or the 46 market stalls have joined the scheme – they are easily identified in the market with a delivery sign. Scotto said that it was a good number of stalls to start with and that he hopes the initiative will grow. He also expressed his thanks to ecomessajeria Rodando for their commitment to the environment in "proposing a sustainable alternative to vehicular traffic" Deliveries will be made throughout Denia, les Rotes and up the Montgo and along the les Marines road as far

British dad severely injured on stag do in Spain A YOUNG British dad is fighting for his life after being found with horrific injuries while on his stag do in Magaluf. 26-year-old firefighter Alex Green, from Goldborne in Merseyside, travelled to Majorca with a group of 25 family members and friends last Friday. Just hours later, he was discovered in the resort with severe injuries. The rest of his group became concerned when Alex failed to return from the toilets of the bar that they were in. They began frantically searching for him, before receiving a phone call from someone who had found him unconscious in the street. It is unclear how Alex suffered his injuries. The British Embassy is in contact with his family. The dad-of-one was rushed to hospital where
he was found to have suffered a bleed on the brain, fractures to his eye sockets, cheeks and nose and a collapsed lung. Alex was placed in an induced coma and has undergone surgery. He remains in intensive care in Majorca, with his family and his fiancée who flew out to the island to be with him. Alex needs around €60,000 to fly him home in a specialist air ambulance and medical care in the Spanish hospital can cost up to €6,000 each day. Early indications are that his travel insurance will not pay out because he had alcohol in his system, making any claim potentially void. Now Alex’s friends have set up a JustGiving page to cover the cost of his care - more than €30,000 has been donated so far.

by Tahnee Wright Calpe has tripled its recycling figures for packaging and doubled the amount of cardboard collected since 2015. During the first half of 2017, Acciona - the cleaning and waste management concessionary – collected 216 tonnes of packaging in comparison to 59.48 tonnes two years ago. 259.22 tonnes of cardboard were collected in comparison to 118.12 tonnes in 2015.
The city says the increase is down to the reorganisation of the service in 2015, which saw over 300 recycling stations installed across the municipality. The increase has meant the city will receive triple the amount of money it receives for its waste, thanks to the agreement with Ecoembes. It will receive €40,000 for packaging in comparison to €15,000 two years ago and €14,000 for cardboard in comparison to €5,000 in 2015.

€10k to promote Valenciano JAVEA recently received a grant from the Generalitat to promote the use of the Valencian language. In total, over €1 million was allocated to 228 municipalities. Javea received €9,679 – 11.4 per cent more than it received last year and the number of municipalities to benefit from the grants increased by 17 per cent.
Exhibition showcases integration of people with disabilities by Fabio Delucci The exhibition ‘VI5IONES’ arrived in Denia this week, showcasing the integration of people with disabilities into the workplace. Denia’s Councillor of Culture and Education Rafael Carrio and Councillor of Social Welfare Cristina Morera opened the exhibition in the Casa de Cultura. The exhibition showcases a series of 15 photographs and aims to bring spectators closer to the day-to-day lives of people with disabilities by showing their capabilities in a variety of working environments. Denia is the fourth stop for the exhibition created by Fundacion SIFU – after visiting Alicante, Elche and Valencia. Photographers Quim Puig and Romuald Gallofre were commended by the town’s councillors for “perfectly capturing the protagonists, inviting the spectator to enter their daily life and to discover a disability that, in most cases, is invisible.” VI5IONES began its tour in Mataro (Barcelona) in August 2015. Since then, the exhibition has passed successfully by a score of cities throughout the country, arriving in the Valencian Community last March. In addition to breaking the prejudices associated with disability, V15IONES aims to perform an x-ray of the labour market of each of the communities through which it passes. 6 per cent of the population of Valencia

by Tahnee Wright THE renowned Buddhist master Gongkar Dorje Dhenpa Rinpoche will give a presentation at the Centro Internacional de Estudios Budistas in La Sella tonight (Friday). The presentation, entitled ‘The awakening of love and wisdom’ will start at 8.00pm and will focus on meditation related to Tara. Tara is a female Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who appears as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. She is known as the "mother of liberation" and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. Tara is a tantric meditation deity whose practice is used by practitioners of the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism to develop certain inner qualities and understand outer, inner and secret teachings about com-
passion and emptiness. Gongkar Dorje Dhenpa Rinpoche is the present throne holder of Dzongpa, a branch of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in India. He was enthroned in 2003 and since then, he has taken full responsibility for the running of the monastery and the revival of his lineage, supported by the monastery’s abbot, Khenpo Jampal Chodzin, and sixty-one resident monks. All the monks have personally taken part in building the monastery, which sits deep in a forest in the district of Dehradun. The winding forest road that leads to the monastery and the small Tibetan community of Khera Goan was also made by them and they cultivate their own organic fruit and vegetables, as well as put out the occasional unfortunate forest fire!

Paralympic sailor brings back bronze Paralympic sailor Rafa Andarias won the bronze medal in the Spanish Sailing Cup 2.4m recently. Andarias longed to won the gold medal, as he did in 2012 and 2014 in the 12-boat competition that took place in Almerian waters. The Javea born debutante is known as a great connoisseur of the Costa Blanca waters
where he has been sailing for more than 15 years. Andarias, who suffers from a disability in his lower limbs, has two paralympic campaigns behind him and is currently No. 9 in the world. The member of Club Nautico de Javea finished fourth in the first regatta that took place last Friday, and eighth, third and first in the following day’s regattas. In Sunday’s definitive regattas, Andarias finished second twice and was awarded with the

bronze medal at the ceremony later that day. Speaking of his achievement he told the Spanish press: “I have competed to a good level, it was an unknown race course and to achieve a bronze here is a success.” Speaking of the upcoming Spanish Championship in Cadiz, he said: "Now comes the important part of the season and achieving the gold medal in Caidz would be the best way to close the year.”
Under the sea The tenth edition of the Open FotoSub GEAS – V Copa FASCV underwater photography competition kicked off on the Marina Alta this week. The competition has become a national event, welcoming photographers from all over Spain. This year current European Champion Rafa Fernandez will go head to head against several photographers who are also set to represent their
regions at the Spanish National Championship in Tenerife next month. Photographers have been getting acquainted with the waters this week and preparing for expeditions out of Club Nautico Moraira this weekend. The award ceremony will be held in Benissa’s Salon de Actos on Sunday September 24 from 12.00pm where all the photographs will be exhibited before a winner is chosen.
New skate park BENIDORM’S Town Hall has acquired land in el Salto del Agua on which to build a skate park. The land, within the Sequia Mare and next to the Palau d’Esports L’Illa has an area of around 14,000 square metres. Councillor of Town Planning Lourdes Caselles said this is just one of the planned projects to improve the lesiure facilities within the Sequia Mare.

After a brief introduction and welcome from the Chairman, Max Maxwell, everyone present was invited to toast the memory of one of the Association’s stalwart and longest serving members, John McMullen, who passed away recently. Amongst his many other achievements throughout his full and active life, John received the French Legion d’Honneur last year for his contributions to the Liberation of France during the Second World War as a Fleet Air Arm pilot. He was a popular member and his passing brought back fond memories for many of those present. Lunch then followed after an ap-
propriate Grace, given by The Association’s Honorary Chaplain, Father Marcus Ronchetti. Peter Langley, a Life Vice President of The Association, gave an interesting talk about a Squadron Leader McLachlan who took part in the Battle of France (pre-Battle of Britain) and who was awarded the DSO and three DFCs. After lunch, Father Marcus then gave the Dedication to The Comradeship of Aircrew. This was followed by the two loyal toasts: His Majesty King Felipe, proposed by Life Vice President Peter Langley and The Queen, proposed by Social Committee Member, Clive Rothwell. The Association’s Guest Speaker was Squadron Leader David Tucker, a serving RAF Officer and member of the association, currently serving in a NATO HQ near Madrid having recently returned from operations in the Middle East. After a hugely successful Gay Pride in Benidorm recently, a handsome donation was made on Wednesday to the Busy Bees Charity, run by Wayne and Des in aid of vulnerable woman and children in the area. Andrew Penfold, owner of the Brief Encounter Bar in Benidorm’s old town, donated 50 cents from every drink purchased over the Pride week to the popular local charity. Coming up just short of a thousand euros, Andy made up the difference “To make a nice round number”. Rotary Fellowship supports the Franciscan Shelter by Rose Holmes The Rotary Fellowship Costa Blanca North recently donated €500 to the Franciscan Shelter for Men at Palma de Gandia. The shelter provides a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness, some of whom are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. Admission is solely on the basis of need and all nationalities and religions are accepted. The hospice is funded entirely by charitable donations, with no state aid or official grants. Three Franciscan Brothers, (Hermano Guillermo, Hermano Pepe and Hermano Martin) assisted by local volunteers, care for the residents around the clock. The Franciscans need money and donations on a regular basis to continue their work in the hospice. The needs are quite specific: Clothing (all sizes – new or secondhand): Track suits, particularly bottoms (preferably non-iron), t-shirts, underwear, soft pyjamas and socks (not white).

Britons have long cherished the belief that they are a free people. Unlike their neighbours the British never experienced occupation. It is well then to remind ourselves of what happens after a country has been invaded and its truculent population repressed. Government is subordinate not to the people but to unseen influences. The political elite touch their toes to accommodate the occupiers. Pillage and plunder of the public purse by the replacement population proceeds. Occupied peoples quickly discover that their status is relegated to that of second class citizen. Whilst equality is the oft-repeated mantra some are considered more equal than are others, the newcomers for example. Life´s routine appears normal but there is a sinister influence that one finds suffocating. It is not exactly forbidden to say this or that or the other, but it is not done. Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. One keeps strictly to the lines drawn in the sand. It is now a punishable offence to express dissent or criticise the conquerors. The judiciary, police and security services become accomplices to the settlers. Press, Civil Service and police are subservient to the intruders. Courts are sympathetic towards those who now rule the roost. Journalists become accomplices to treachery;
media is institutionally hostile to the host community, which finds their opinions are effectively silenced. Members of the occupied community are denied access to selected alienoccupied zones. Civil servants and police are aware that their job security is dependent upon servile acquiescence to the whims of the newly arrived.
Employment, education and housing preference is given to the incomers. This is known as affirmative action or reverse racism. Media and palace publishers rebuff poetry, art and literature considered to be of a dissenting nature. Job security is dependent upon compliance. Major crimes committed by the newly arrived are treated as minor misdemeanours. Minor misdemeanours committed by the host community are regarded as major crimes. A sentence is automatically doubled if the court considers there was an element of hostility towards an occupier. The interests of the incomers are sacrosanct and inviolable. The host population finds their history demonised and culture mocked. The prevailing propaganda urges collaboration and defeat is said to be inevitable. Media focuses on the failings of the host community whilst drooling over the history and culture of the invaders. Censorship and suppression is endemic. Members of the host community are under surveillance, considered suspects and considered potential criminals. This is what it is like to live in an occupied country. Rule, Britannia, rule the waves, Britons never will be slaves. Perhaps Britannia no longer rules the waves washing along the English Channel.

A few days ago, ministers from the Gibraltarian government arrived in London, the reason to discuss several questions that need urgent replies? This included the most important one of all, Gibraltar after Brexit? A week before their arrival Gibraltar celebrated something called National Gibraltar Day, the locals were joined as always by tourists, those who had crossed over from Spain, and those who had arrived by cruise ship for a day’s shopping. The streets were bedecked with flags and bunting, kids with balloons smiling as they would do when enjoying the day, one balloon broke away from its young owner and floated gently in the light breeze over Trafalgar, not certain where it would end up. A bit like the question of Gibraltar as Brexit creeps on. So, nothing is different there really, you could say every day is Gibraltar Day when the sun shines, except things could become rather awkward for Gibraltar and the Gibraltarians residents. 50 years ago, in 1967, the Rock voted by more than 90% to remain British it come as no surprise to all of us, however at the referendum in which Britain voted to leave the E.U. Gibraltar voted unequivocally to stay in the E.U. This is the conundrum that now faces Britain, Gibraltar and the European Union, so far to my knowledge the Gibraltar question has not come into play during the Brexit talks between David Davis Britain’s negotiator and Michel Barnier for the E.U, but when it does arrive it could hang over the talks like a storm cloud, or even upgrade to a hurricane? What will happen? Will Britain write off Gibraltar as a lost cause, no they cannot afford to as Gibraltar has been Britain’s lynch pin in the Mediterranean for Centuries. Will Gibraltar be forced into holding another referendum, almost certainly not likely after their last vote was so clear in staying. This is a dilemma for the government as it is almost an impossible task to resolve.
I spent around an hour trying to get some comments on the GIb/UK position, however I failed miserably, my call telephone call to Gibraltar Governments Press office failed to get a response, “If you look up our website, you may find something there that may help you” a spokesman said. In London the Gibraltar office suggested I called Gibraltar, maybe these are highly paid people to answer questions put to them by people like me, are they getting money for nothing? I think so. During the National Day celebrations, the chief minister Mr Picardo, seems to reverse the early decision when he said that Brexit would pose an “existential threat” to Gibraltar owing to the border with Spain and asked Whitehall somehow to allow Gibraltar to stay in the E.U. “We will leave with the UK, Britain sticks with us and we stick with Britain, Gibraltar will prosper greatly”. But what would Gibraltarians say after the referendum vote to remain in the E.U? A local business man told me, “The referendum was a joke, why go to all that trouble, and expense, I
am slightly relieved that Spain or the E.U. will not penalise us if we leave with Britain, that’s if they stand by their word”. A young lady selling perfumes told me “I voted to remain, but on looking at what is happening in Europe, and the huge rise of immigration in Spain, and the way Britain looks as if it is going, then I would be happy to leave as well.” A shop owner commented “we rely on the Brits that come shopping from the mainland and then cruise ships, they like to spend money, so whatever happens with remain or exit, as long as we can have shoppers”. Mr Menez started his business 21 years ago as a small glass blowing work shop, he received funds from the E.U for his centre of town factory, he said that the biggest issue we are facing is a free flowing border for people visiting Gibraltar, and the goods we import, such as raw materials we buy is exclusively bought from the E.U. It has to travel through the European Union, to get to us, but if it faces a difficult Spanish
border then I will have a problem in the same way it affects us being able to export our goods to the world, so the uncertainly is very bad for me and others in the same position”. Will it mean that many of the 96 per cent of the 32,000 residents on the Rock that voted to remain are changing their minds, it’s a possibility, as the signs of growth in Britain are looking more optimistic MPs were supposedly told by Mr Picardo at a private lunch that he had spoken to Gibraltar’s business bosses and told them “maybe we got it wrong, he was “hugely optimistic that we will be able to negotiate our way through this difficult moment, in a way that does not affect our prosperity”. But after consulting the Rock’s nonplussed business bosses - who do 90 per cent of their trade with the UK mainland - MPs claim Fabian Picardo told them at a private lunch “maybe we got it wrong”. So what will happen next for Gibraltar, now most of the threats are slowly evaporating, another referendum, no I don’t think so. I don’t think Picardo would gamble his position away, but if Gibraltar did leave without a final consultation with its 32,000 inhabitants what would the remainders say,.One remainder told me “ politics is like a bloody game of cards you place your bet on what you hope will be a king, and a joker turns up, they supposed to represent us, but as soon as the going gets tough the weak get going MPs are useless”. We will have to wait and watch as the Brexit negotiations continue to creep on at a snail’s pace, there has been a lot of hand shaking and smiles between David Davis and Michel Barnier, however behind all that bon homme I still think that Barnier and the E.U. will try and pull a few fast ones on us. As for the little girl watching her balloon slowly drifting aimlessly up into the air above Trafalgar not knowing where it is going, or where it will land, can the same be said for Gibraltar? Only time will tell.

History is a funny thing. It is often proclaimed that history will be the final arbiter and have the ultimate say in the actions taken by individuals today. But there are famous figures from the past that still seem to be remembered for obscure and inaccurate reasons. Take Alfred the Great. He was a great administrator, religious reformer and sponsor of literacy. He was also instrumental in starting a process that led to the unification of the many kingdoms into a single entity that later became England. But how were we school kids taught to remember him? For burning a batch of scones in some peasant hut in the Somerset Levels. Hardly fair. How about King Richard I, aka the Lion Heart, regaled by some as England’s greatest king because of his exploits during the bloody Third Crusade. Don’t believe it, because throughout his ten year reign he spent just six months in England and probably didn’t even speak the language. Moreover after failing to secure Jerusalem, he fell out with his European pals (sound’s familiar) and got himself captured and ransomed off for 150,000 marks. A staggering £2.3 billion in today’s money, taking into account inflation. Here’s a good one: Wat Tyler, the leader of The Peasants Revolt and no doubt Diane Abbott’s pin up boy. No guesses what Wat did for a living by the way.
Trains were thin on the ground in 1381, so Wat marched his peasant army from Canterbury to London to demand better working conditions, a limit on overtime and a new productivity deal. Having slaughtered a few conservatives on the way and scaring the living daylights out of the boy king Richard II when London itself was threatened, all of Wat’s demands were met. But then he get’s cocky, swears at the King and spits water over his feet, at which point London’s Lord Mayor – a sort of Sadiq Khan with tights – draws his dagger and ends Wat’s tiling days forever. The result? All bets were called off, and amid much muttering and flatulence, the peasants about turned and went back
to serfing, empty handed. History is littered with other examples. Take Jethro Tull: recognised as a great hero of the Agricultural Revolution with his famous seed drill. But what about his prowess at playing the flute whilst standing on one leg? Hardly ever mentioned. It makes me wonder how history will judge Anthony Blair Esq., but I am not optimistic.

Comparisons Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Well, we’re still on the subject of adjectives as there are a lot of things to say about them apart from how they agree with nouns as we have already seen. Another thing we use adjectives for is to make comparisons. For example, in English we say “big” “bigger” “the biggest”; “nice, nicer, the nicest”; “beautiful, more beautiful, the most beautiful”. We call these forms “comparative” and “superlative”. The comparative compares two things - “My dad is bigger than your dad” whereas the superlative compares one thing in relation to all the rest “His dad is the biggest”. This is very easy in Spanish as we simply place the word más in front of the adjective to form the comparative (comparing two) and el más (masc) or la más (feminine) to form the superlative (one in comparison to all the rest).
Mi papá es más grande que tu papá. (Notice we use que to translate “than”). Su papá es el más grande. “His dad is the biggest”. Now here is one more thing to learn about adjectives. Spanish has a very interesting way of using them to replace nouns. For example, we can say: el hombre viejo the old man - and this is perfectly correct - but usually it gets reduced to simply el viejo. (We could translate this as “the old man” or simply: “the old one”). This works in the same way in the feminine. La chica guapa – the pretty girl, or simply la guapa (the pretty one). All adjectives work in this way – el gordo (the fat one - masc), la tonta (the silly one – fem), el gracioso (the funny one – masc), la fea (the ugly one – fem). Of course in Spanish we can identify whether the person is masculine or feminine, whereas this meaning
is lost in English. We can also use this to refer to things, of course. ¿Cuál de las cajas quieres? La grande. (Which box do you want? – the big one). And finally, also related to adjectives, we can now learn the fifth way of saying “the”. If you remember we have learnt so far that there are masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms – el, la, los and las. The missing form is “lo”. Now lo has several meanings in Spanish, but at the moment we are only looking at when it means “the”. This is how it works, using three examples. Lo interesante - “the interesting thing” Lo difícil - “the difficult thing” Lo curioso - “the curious thing” What can we say about these expressions? Well, interesante, difícil and
curioso are all adjectives. However, they are not describing anything in particular. We are not saying “the interesting book”, “the difficult job”, “the curious idea”. These adjectives are really describing ideas or situations not words that are defined as masculine or feminine. In this case, the word for “the” cannot be el or la but is a neutral “the” – lo. I’ll finish with a sentence for you to translate into English which hopefully illustrates some of what we’ve learnt. Los dos hijos, el guapo y el feo, van a visitar a su familia este verano. Lo triste es que el guapo es más popular que el feo, aunque el feo es mucho más simpático, y es el más generoso de toda la familia. Lo más curioso de todo es que el guapo tiene muchos más amigos que el feo, pero el feo es el más feliz.

Jack Levy was sitting outside Malaga cathedral with his wife when his phone rang. It was Mr Rabinovich. “Where are ya, ya big mutt?” Levy cried. “Torre del Mar,” came the voice of his trusted bodyguard, reading a sign. Outside the call-box the beach was busy, children eating ice-cream under the blue-striped lighthouse as a plane trailing an advert droned downcoast. “Tell me you´ve got the ring?” “No, Mr Levy. I make a strong landing. I lose mind in landing for a few minutes.” “You get that little…?” Levy cursed despite himself. He looked up at the bell-tower and rolled his eyes; waved at his worried wife and blew her a kiss. It´s fine, it´s fine. “No, Mr Levy. They get away. But you don´t worry. I know this place. I work here many times. I find ring. I find ring, bring bad person back.” “No! You find ring and you kill ´em. You hear me? You find my ring and you…” As Mr Rabinovich held the receiver away from his ear, Costa del Sol steered his noisy moped around the roundabout behind the call-box, drawing to a halt at a kiosk whose plump owner was sitting outside on a deckchair. “Looking for Michelangelo,” Costa tried, putting on his best Andalusian accent. It was the fifth time he´d asked the question in an hour. “Si, si. Straight down there, past the fairground. It´s the last block on the right,” came the answer. Costa felt a surge of power light him up like Christmas. “Jo´! ¿Que calor hace, eh?” said the big man, mopping his brow. My God, it´s hot, eh? “Oh, yes,” Costa replied, snapping down his visor. “Hot indeed.” Costa didn´t notice Mr Rabinovich staring at him as he drove off.

Would you like to save your loved ones that big inheritance tax bill? IHT (Inheritance Tax) planning is certainly not as simple in Spain as the UK, but there are solutions if you get the right advice. A typical scenario here in Spain is that of my clients, a husband and wife, who have been retired here in Spain for 12 years, and own a property here. They also have 2 investment properties in the UK and savings and investments totalling approximately £300k. When they both pass away, they want to leave their entire estate to their two grown up children, who both live in the UK. Their Worldwide assets will be subject to UK IHT, as they are seen as UK domiciled, and their Spanish based assets will also be subject to Spanish IHT (although with the double tax agreement, they can claim relief on this part of their UK bill). As a couple, the first £650k will be free of UK inheritance tax. As their primary residence is not in the UK, they will not benefit from any primary residence tax
relief in terms of their UK properties. The total value of their 3 properties will use up all their £650k UK tax free relief. This means that their savings and investments of £300,000 will be fully subject to UK IHT at 40%, which will leave a bill of approximately £120,000, potentially more if they hold some of these savings or investments in a Spanish bank or institution. The good news is, with proper planning, we can save their beneficiaries this entire £120,000 bill. The key to Spanish IHT planning is that to avoid Spanish IHT both the beneficiary and the asset must be outside Spain. Once you’ve ticked this off, your remaining issue is the UK IHT allowance. This is where trust planning comes into play. What we were able to do with this couple is to place their savings and investments into a Spanish compliant investment bond, a bond recognised by the Spanish tax authorities, but crucially based outside Spain, and then move this
bond into a trust for their children. In terms of the Spanish bond, this is a tax efficient plan designed for Spanish residents, which allows my clients, cautious investors, to target investment returns of around 4-5% per year. Despite being in trust, they can still make regular withdrawals to supplement their pension incomes, pay for holidays, a new car etc. When they both pass away, the trust element will mean the proceeds of their investment bond will be paid in full to their children without being subject to Spanish or UK IHT, saving that £120,000 IHT bill. Even more reassuring for my clients was the fact that the institution I recommended for this solution is a FTSE 100 company with nearly 20 million clients Worldwide. Hello my name is Herr Müller and I have bought a second-hand property in Teulada. I had a lot of discussions with my Spanish neighbour about the boundaries of my property and I want to know what the boundaries are. What can I do? The Catastro is where the “legal maps” are registered and will give you the boundaries, the exact location of the property (usually in a visual form), size and description of the property, usually with maps, location, and drawings and use of the property. 1. First of all you have to find out the Referencia catastral = Catastral reference number it is a very large number (around 14 numbers and 6 letters) that number appears in two places. a. On the Deeds of your property (as referencia catastral) b.-IBI (local tax) is a municipal tax which has to be paid every year by owners of homes, premises, garages or plots, ie, any urban property or buildings and also by owners of agricultural land or buildings.
2. Go to the web page https://www.sedecatastro.gob.es/ and click in Consulta de Datos Catastrales. Referencia Catastral 3. Put the number with the letters of your house where is (*)Referencia catastral

5. If you click in Cartografia and then in Cartografia catastral you will see an official cartographic map of your property. In this map there is a menu at the top of the map.
6. And just at the right of the symbol “M” there is a ruler measure with red color click in and now you can mesure the boundaries of you property. You also have a 3D view. 7. In the menu of cartography also you can find photos of the property and other visual like goole earth for this you have to a. Click in Cartografia b. Gml croquis for plantas (fxcc) c. descarga klm 8. Compare the Deeds with the map and the real situation. If the boundaries or the size of the property are not like in the map contact us and we will help you. Last Sunday’s ‘Big Heart of Javea’ classic car and motorbike event was chosen by biker friends and family of Noelle Wyman as the perfect location to say a final farewell. Noelle, (better known as Auntie Noelle to her listeners on Bay Radio) passed away in May this year having lost her fight with cancer. With thanks to Telitec for their support, 100 blue balloons each carrying a message were released at the event. “This was the first opportunity for the biking community and members of the public to show their love, respect and admiration for someone who always had a smile and kind word for everyone. She will indeed be sadly missed” said Peter Emmett. Noelle’s husband Bob James was delighted to join the Free Spirits Harley Davidson enthusiast group on the ‘In Memory Ride’ earlier that day before they roared into Javea for the main event. Noelle will be remembered for many things, not least helping Harley Davidson owners and riders on the Costa Blanca establish the Charity Biker Babe Appeal. From June 2014 through to December 2016, the Charity Biker Babe Appeal raised an astonishing €54,000 for the Children of Emaus.

A taste of 1920s New Orleans on the Costa Blanca TICKETS are now on sale for the Bourbon Street Stompers show at Teulada-Moraira Auditori on Friday October 27. The concert - produced by Costa Blanca Concerts – will feature special guest James McCorkle on vocals, another hot ‘operatic’ tenor from New Orleans. The Bourbon Street Stompers, hailed ‘one of the hottest young New Orleans bands in Europe’ was founded in Essen in May 1993 when Rene Richter (banjo/ guitar), Carsten Bernoth (piano), Olaf Kalytta (trombone), Daniel Wehsarg (double bass/ vocals), Helge Sachs (clarinet, saxophone, vocals) Axel Stephan (drums/ washboard) and Gunnar Sachs (trumpet/ cornet) were
still at school. Winning the school's music award that was instituted by the WDR - one of the biggest broadcasting companies in Western Germany - enabled for the Bourbon Street Stompers to record their first album ‘A Tribute to Dixie’. Meanwhile a growing bunch of fans promoted the band as they performed at number of both private and public concerts. Further CD productions followed with recordings to ‘Second Stomp’ in 1997, ‘Stompin' Milestones’ in 1999 and ‘Those Struttin' Syncopators’ in 2003. When asked what differentiates the Bourbon Street Stompers from other bands, they said:
“Except for our often-noticed average height of 1.93 m - not scarcely reminding our audience of Prussian infantrymen? First, there is no doubt that a close friendship developed among the seven band members over the course of the years, which enabled us to stand our ground against professional bands in an increasingly commercialised environment. Moreover, it is our strong wish and overall effort to let this vital and infectious music roll and carry away our audience whenever we join on stage.” Tickets cost €20 and are available via www.instantticket.es or from the Teulada-Moraira Auditori box office, Teulada Ayuntamiento and the Espai La Senieta theatre.
Tea, coffee and cake for a good cause The Second Chance Charity Shop in Albir will host a coffee morning next Monday September 25 from 10.00am – 1.00pm. Guests can enjoy tea and coffee with thanks to Dave and Dot at The Oasis Bar and of course, some delicious homemade cakes. A raffle will be held offering some great prizes. Tickets are already on sale in the shop at only €1 for a strip of five. The Second Chance Charity Shop primarily supports the UK registered, Mombassa based charity Education for Life. Education for Life provides employment for local people; feeds and educates children; provides homes for orphaned and abandoned children and families in need of a helping hand. The Second Chance Charity Shop also purchases fresh

Javea Councillor of Culture Quico Moragues will join members at the Javea Players' open day on Sunday October 15. The open day will be held at the Players' Studio Theatre on Calle Cronista Figueres Pacho as members present what they’ve been up to in recent months. Cancer Care coffee morning CANCER CARE JAVEA is holding a coffee morning next Friday September 29 outside the shops in Javea Park. Everyone is invited to catch up over a cuppa, enjoy some gorgeous treats and help the charity make sure no one has to face cancer alone. Refreshments are being provided by Clair and David at Mr Punch and cakes are being baked by volunteers and friends of Cancer Care Javea. The charity was established in 1998 and since then has raised over €600.000. Rastro in Pinosol Park APASA (Asociacion Ptrotectora de Animales de San Antonio) will hold their much anticipated rastro in Pinosol Park next weekend. Pulled chicken
This twist on the street-food favourite, pulled pork, is recreated using juicy chicken thighs to cut the calories for a healthy taco filling Ingredients 8 bone-in chicken thighs, skin removed and discarded and trimmed of any big bits of fat 2 tbsp chipotle paste 250ml passata 75g barbecue sauce 1 onion, chopped juice 3 limes, plus extra wedges to serve (optional) 2 x 400g cans black beans, drained and rinsed 215g can refried beans 1 small, ripe avocado, diced ½ small pack coriander, leaves only 3 Baby Gem lettuces 8-12 tacos, or cooked rice, to serve
200C/180C fan/gas 6 and bake for another 20 mins. 2. Meanwhile, mix the remaining onion with the lime juice and some salt, and set aside while the chicken cooks. Mix all the beans in a saucepan with 100ml water, ready to heat to serve. 3. When the chicken is really tender, use two forks to shred the meat into the sauce (discard the bones). Keep covered with the foil while you heat the beans for 5-10 mins until piping hot and not too wet, and warm the tacos following pack instructions. Stir the avocado and coriander leaves into the lime-onion mixture. 4. Serve the pulled chicken and beans with shredded lettuce and tacos, or rice and lime wedges to squeeze over, if you like. Top with a spoonful of the avocado salsa.
Method 1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Rub the chicken thighs with 1 tbsp of the chipotle paste and some seasoning. Mix the remaining chipotle paste with the passata, barbecue sauce, 100ml water and half the onion. Spoon the sauce into a roasting tin that will fit the chicken snugly in a single layer and add the chicken thighs. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1 hr, then uncover, increase the oven to
Grilled salmon with ginger sauce One of the best things about salmon, other than its numerous health benefits, is that it cooks so quickly. If using a fish basket, you may turn the fish once, halfway through cooking time
INGREDIENTS 2 8 oz salmon fillets 3 tbsp dry sherry 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely minced 2 tbsp butter 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper lemon slices
DIRECTIONS 1. In a shallow glass dish, combine the sherry, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Place the fish in the marinade for 30 minutes. 2.Preheat the grill, and brush the grids with vegetable oil. Dot the salmon with butter, and grill on MEDIUM - HIGH for 10 minutes. The skin should easily separate from the fish when it is cooked. Place the salmon on a platter, garnish with fresh lemon slices and serve.

STRONG CONNECTION: Parkinson’s disease in close up People with Parkinson's disease are about four times more likely to develop melanoma skin cancer, and conversely, people with melanoma have a fourfold higher risk of getting Parkinson's, researchers report. Although doctors have known about the connection between these diseases, they still don't know why having one increases the risk of the other. "Future research should focus on identifying common genes, immune responses and environmental exposures that may link these two diseases," said study first author Dr. Lauren Dalvin, who's with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "If we can pinpoint the cause of the
association between Parkinson's disease and melanoma, we will be better able to counsel patients and families about their risk of developing one disease in the setting of the other," she said. Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder. Symptoms of the disease include tremors, stiffness and difficulty walking. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer. It occurs much less often than other forms of skin cancer, but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma starts as a new spot on the skin, or when a mole changes in size, shape or colour. Previous studies has suggested that the Parkinson's drug levodopa
may play a role in melanoma, but the findings from this new study and others don't support that theory, the researchers said. The new study included nearly 1,000 people with Parkinson's disease and compared them to almost 3,000 people without the movement disorder. The study also included more than 1,500 with melanoma. The researchers said since there is such a strong connection between these diseases, doctors treating patients for either disease should watch for signs of the other. The researchers also recommended that doctors counsel patients about their risk of the other condition.

Get ants out – and keep them out! Don’t wait until ants have overrun your kitchen to find out how to get rid of them. To get them out - and keep them out, follow the nine simple steps below. 1. First, understand the ant colony and its queen. To solve an ant problem, you need to first eliminate the ones you don’t see to get rid of the ones you do see. The queen - the one who lays all the eggs - never leaves her nest. She just stays there, being fed by the workers (the ones you see) and continuing to reproduce more ants. So, you can spray and spray the ants you see and she'll just keep making more to take their place.
2. Watch the trailing ants. The first step in controlling ants is simply watching the ones that enter your home to see where they are coming from and going to. An ant will seek food, but once it finds food, the ant will return to its nest with the crumb, leaving a scent trail behind it. By doing so, the ant leaves a trail for its fellow worker ants to help in gathering the food. 3. Don't spray the ants! As discussed in point 1, the ants that you see are worker ants. Their job is to find food and take it back to feed the queen and her young, who are being groomed as the next generation of worker ants. Because of this, these worker ants are your ticket into the colony. If you spray and kill these
ants, the colony will simply send out more workers and you'll never reach the queen. So, what do you do? See point 4: 4. Set out ant bait. Instead of eliminating the worker ants, use them! Following all label directions, place ant bait stations along the trail you identified in point 2. The workers will find the bait, carry it back to the nest and feed the queen, eventually killing her and eliminating future populations. 5. Hold off on cleaning Although it is good to eliminate other food sources, you don't want to mop away the ant's odour trail yet. The trail will now lead the workers to your bait instead. 6. Be patient. The ants will carry the insecticide bait back to the nest, but it can take several days to eliminate the colony, or even a few weeks if the colony is very large or it has several queens. (Some ant species do.) You may even need
Filthy fridge hell Appliance repair company GoAssist.co.uk recently conducted a national fridge cleanliness study, involving 2,000 UK adults, and the findings were pretty grim. According to the research, the average British fridge hasn’t been properly cleaned for 87 days. That’s more than three times longer than the recommended length of time between cleans. Shockingly, almost one in ten Britons can’t even remember the last time they cleaned their fridge. Brighton is the UK’s dirty fridge capital. 17 per cent of the city’s residents can’t remember the last time they cleaned their fridge and among those who do remember, the average time since the last clean is 138 days. Glasgow has the dirtiest fridges, with more residents than anywhere else in the UK leaving their fridge without a clean for more than a year. The research also
looked at workplace fridges as part of the study and if you’re thinking of taking yesterday’s Spaghetti Bolognese into work today, you might want to think again. Four in ten (38 per cent) respondents who regularly kept their lunch in an office fridge said they had no idea when the fridge was last cleaned out. Equally, if not more alarming than fridge cleanliness, was the lack of understanding around how the appliances actually work. Just over 10 percent of study participants wrongly believe that - because they’re temperature controlled - fridges require no cleaning at all. James Holden, spokesperson for GoAssist.co.uk, believes misconceptions about how fridges actually work are behind the problem. “According to our research, a worrying amount of people wrongly believe they don’t need to regularly clean their fridge. But even in a cool environment, food can go off and bacteria can rapidly contaminate other items. It’s really important for hygiene and maintenance reasons to regularly clean your fridge. “We recommend doing a deep clean of your fridge every four weeks. To make life a little bit easier, schedule your next clean the day before you do your food shopping. This way, there will be fewer items to remove from the fridge before cleaning.”

The cage For your hamster to be comfortable, his cage will need to be at least 20” by 10” or larger. The cage will also need to be escape proof (hamsters are amateur escape artists) and easy to clean. When you’re choosing your cage, keep in mind that hamsters can easily squeeze through small places and chew through plastic. Bedding Get a good aspen bedding for your hamster’s cage. Avoid cedar and pine bedding, however, you can also use newspaper or fibre-based bedding if they better suit your hamster’s needs. For nesting materials, tissue or toilet paper should do the trick. Avoid cotton nesting material frequently found at pet stores, it’s unnecessary and it can cause health problems for your hamster if eaten.

Hideaway Your hamster will want a private place to sleep, so consider putting a small home or hideaway in his cage. You can use a cardboard or plastic box, or a coconut shell for this purpose. If you’re not a ‘do it yourself’ type of person, you could always buy a small hamster house to do the trick. With these things, your hamster will be happy and healthy in his new home. Take good care of your hamster and have fun!

They should have a chest, a stomach and a ‘waist.’ If you can’t see these because your dog looks like a sausage with legs, it’s diet time. Porsche unveils the 911 GT3 The 911 GT3 with Touring Package will be unveiled at the 67th International Motor Show (IAA), which is taking place until September 24, in Frankfurt. Instead of the fixed rear wing, when equipped with the optional Touring Package, the GT3 will have an adaptive rear spoiler similar to that of the 911 Carrera models. Beneath its understated exterior is pure motorsport-derived technology: The four-litre naturally aspirated flatsix engine develops 500 horsepower and generates 339 lb.-ft. of torque. The 911 GT3 with Touring Package sprints from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top track speed of 196 miles per hour.
The Touring Package will be available exclusively in combination with the sixspeed manual transmission. The name “Touring Package” harkens back to a variant of the 911 Carrera RS from 1973. The very pure 911 design and classic interior features were key elements of this model. The new 911 GT3 when equipped with the Touring Package follows the same concept, and retains the two-seater arrangement of the 911 GT3. Apart from certain Alcantara-covered interior fittings, almost all 911 GT3 options are also available in combination with the
Touring Package. This includes all available exterior colours, wheel choices, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, the front axle lift system, LED headlights, three seat options, and the Sport Chrono Package.

The UK new car market reported its fifth consecutive month of decline in August, according to figures published by Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell by 6.4 per cent, after a record August in 2016. However, with more than 76,000 new cars registered, the performance still represents the third biggest August in 10 years. Year to date, the market remained broadly in line with expectations, down 2.4 per cent, with 1,640,241 new cars joining British roads in the first eight months. Superminis and small family cars remained the most popular types in August, accounting for more than half (58.3 per cent) of registrations. However, SUVs, larger family cars and executives were the only segments to grow, up 7.9 per cent, 2.2 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, more people chose to get behind the wheel of an alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) than ever before in the month, accounting for a 5.2 per cent

In fact, that is where the name “four ball” comes from: In a four ball match, there are four golf balls in play on each hole. There are several big team tournaments in professional golf that use four ball match play as one of their competition formats: the Ryder
Cup, Presidents Cup and Solheim Cup. Players were split into two teams – the ‘Bears’ and the ‘Bulls’. The Bulls came out on top, winning 5.1/2 to 2.1/2. Lorraine Murphy said: “We had a few talent scouts planted amongst us obviously trying to get a heads up on our team for the 28th but, as with all teams with big matches coming up, we didn’t show our full hand. The MontGoal tournament will be the first of many to be held on a monthly basis at the Palau Municipal D’Esport. The World Amateur Subbuteo Players Association is an alternative circuit of tournaments for Subbuteo
table football players and clubs from around the world – with 44 countries already having joined. The tournament will be held from 10.00am – 2.00pm and the club meets every Saturday at the same time. Novices are welcomed along with seasoned Subbuteo players of all nationalities. Padel teacher training Last weekend, seven padel fans took part in a padel teacher training course at La Nucia’s Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano. All players received an official diploma endorsed by the A.P.A (Argentine Padel Association). The course was organised by Padelpoint together with the Department of Sports and taught by Jorge Nicolini, who boasts over 30 years’ experience training great Argentinian and Brazilian teachers. In 25 hours over three days, players took theoretical and practical classes concentrating on both the game itself and teaching methodologies.

Each year the Iberian Open competition heralds the start of the winter bowling season. 112 competitors from Javea and surrounding clubs battled it out over 8 days for the chance to lift the prestigious trophies and pocket generous prize monies. 1,500 ´ends´ were played and in excess of 5,000 woods delivered. 1,260 bottles of water along with 400 litres of beer were consumed. Monday was finals day and after several nail-biting matches the
winners were announced. The mens rinks was won by Paul Brown, Stewart Beattie, Brian Manser and Derek Eldon. Ladies rinks winners were Wendy Symonds, Lynda Warnes, Yvonne Brown and Chris Evans. Aussie Pairs champions were Chris Evans and Clive English. The main event as always was saved till last and Yvonne Brown and Maggie Lawley had a nip and tuck game before Maggie emerged triumphant with a
score of 21-18. The mens final, also a close run affair, was won 21-18 by Paul Trunchion against last years winner Alan Phillips. Paul was also declared Player of the Tournament. The bowls club President Alan Travers expressed his greatest thanks to sponsors Avalon Europe, Telitec and Scottsdale overseas for their generous and continuous support before competitors enjoyed a meal and disco courtesy of Matt and Brian Taylor.
