FOR many years, people have been continually warned to watch out for the bogus gas men in the area. They go around, usually preying on British and other non-Spanish visitors, purporting to be officials needing to inspect gas installations. Now, in another scam, bogus salesmen have been visiting mainly British-owned bars and restaurants pretending to be representing the Guardia Civil Magazine. This has been going on for some years across the country and has even resulted in prison sentences handed down to the offenders, but doesn’t get the same amount of promotion as the gas men. The tactic used is to enter an establishment – often two at a time – to get business owners to subscribe to a Guardia Civil Magazine. A combination of slightly aggressive sales pressure and a feeling of not wanting to cross members of the Guardia often end up with people giving over anything between €180 and €400 for what turns out to be non-existent advertising. The latest example of this scam happened this
week on Urbanisation La Marina. Beverley Yates, owner of J’s Restaurant in Consum Square contacted RTN to tell us of her experience. “This smart looking Spanish man came in with a briefcase and looking all official and asked to speak to the boss. He showed me his ID and started talking to me in Spanish. At this point, one of my customers enjoying a coffee who understood more Spanish than I did jumped up and told me it was a scam and not to give him any money.” Bev told the RTN that a slightly heated discussion took place between the customer and the ‘representative’ who left rather quickly and jumped into his car without visiting any other establishments in the square. “The customer explained that he’d told the rep that it was a scam that he’d heard of before and it is well known in Spain. I don’t think he liked being tackled in this way. If he was legal, why didn’t he visit other businesses near to mine?” There is indeed an official magazine called Guardia Civil but it is a purely internal publication and no local businesses are ever asked to advertise

Summer of lost children by Ray Chadwick BEACH authorities for the Alicante province are showing concern about the increasing number of children reported as or finding themselves lost. To date, a total of 111 children reported as being lost on the beaches of Alicante city and 37 more in Javea, Santa Pola and Guardamar. Much of the increase is believed to be due to the number of adults and others responsible for the children getting distracted by continually using their mobile devices. A few moments looking at the screen rather than those under their care can often result in them losing sight of them. Members of the local police, the lifeguards and Civil Protection officers have identified the children that are missing as invariably they’re crying and frightened. BE AWARE: Keep an eye on children at all times beach in Alicante said it’s no coincidence that the increase in people using mobile devices on the beaches has gone alongside more children getting lost. As expected, August is the busiest month for such incidents and last year’s total figure of 103 children lost on the same beaches has already been exceeded. If it carries on at this summer’s rate, the number is predicted to reach 125.
The usual age range for those getting lost is between 4 and 6-yearsold, but there have been some cases where teenagers have been involved. The oldest recorded this summer was a 15-year-old boy who was lost on the Playa San Juan. He went diving with goggles and appeared three hours later in El Campello, some distance around the cove.

IT’S not the rains and it’s not the drains but another burst water main that has caused flooding to the centre of Murcia. The water supply was cut once the problem was identified, but locals are none too happy as it’s not the first time this has happened in exactly the same spot last year. Precisely, it’s Calle Sagasta that took the brunt of the flooding and the adjoining Calle Vidrieras and Calle San Ginés. Some of the road has actually lifted up in the worst affected area which needed vehicles to be diverted. The flooding subsided after about 45 minutes and engineers began to work on repairing the fault.

Debt collectors become life savers by Steve Collins SUMA, the official ‘debt collectors’ for the Alicante province are about to become a vital life-saving point too. In the coming weeks, 15 of its main offices will see semi-automatic defibrillators installed that will enable anyone to be treated in the case of suffering a cardiac arrest in or near to the premises. This new initiative, developed in association with and the agreement of the occupational health committee, includes the training of all personnel who will have access to the defibrillators so they can accurately carry out the procedure if needed.
It’s vital that a patient suffering a cardiac arrest can be treated as soon as possible and every second really does count. Semi-automatic External Defibrillators are vital to saving the life of a person who has a heart attack because they allow normal heart rhythms to be restored by applying a high-voltage electric shock. Last month, a similar device was used to save someone’s life in the commercial centre in Elche.

Helicopter rescue for young hiker A 20-YEAR-OLD man needed to be rescued by helicopter after getting injured as he walked through the Sierra de Santa Pola. The hiker apparently suffered a fracture of a tibia and fibula and in an operation involving all the local emergency service was eventually taken to the local heliport for onward transportation to hospital. The alarm was raised by the person with the injured victim
after he allegedly fell as they were crossing a point in the quarry in the Sierra de Santa Pola. This isn’t the first time this year that hikers have needed emergency help in the area. Back in February, a pair of walkers was rescued by helicopter after getting lost for 10 hours on one of the small mountain ranges overlooking Crevillente.
Mystery woman identified
A WOMAN who fell from a seven-metre high wall around the Santa Barberá castle in Alicante has been identified at last. The accident happened last Friday and a combination of not having any ID with her, drifting in an out of consciousness, and nobody reporting anyone missing meant that the medical staff at the hospital nor the police could discover anything about her. Originally, authorities described her as being ‘about 30’ and originally said she couldn’t recall anything about the fall that saw her ending up in hospital. Four days later, she was discovered to a 41-year-old Swedish national who had been an in-patient at the nearby San Juan Hospital where she was undergoing treatment in the mental health unit. Her only memory of what happened was sitting on wall of the castle before possible losing her balance. She suffered severe back injuries, remains in intensive care and police are investigating whether her fall was an accident or whether it was caused by something more sinister.

This summer season already has seen 183 bathers needing to be rescued across 18 beaches that make up Javea, Santa Pola and Guardamar. In addition, the Cruz Roja (Spanish Red Cross) have needed to take 58 people by ambulance to hospital. In a sign that bathers are taking no notice of the different coloured warning flags placed at regular intervals along the beaches, most of the rescues took place when the
yellow or red flag was flying. During the first few weeks of the season, the yellow flag was raised 145 times; the red flag 52. Director of the Cruz Roja in Alicante, Andrés Chessa, said: "The Cruz Roja cannot emphasise enough the importance of respecting the colours of the flags. The fact that there are still people who enter the sea with the red flag flying or ignore the instructions of the rescue team means that work on awareness needs actioning. The flags are like the traffic lights on the roads.” In view of this, the Cruz Roja, is undertaking a series of campaigns using social media, posters and leaflets in several languages giving advice to residents and tourists alike to prevent future accidents or drowning

Airport’s busy August begins SAN JAVIER Airport in Murcia began its ‘Primero de agosto’ operation when more than 150 flights landed or took off. Over a period of five days at the start of the month, 27,000 passengers went through the airport. The travellers came from 21 destinations with those from the UK topping the list, followed by Ireland, Norway and Belgium. San Javier Airport – known by many as Murcia Airport – is close to the village of Santiago de la Ribera near to the Mar Menor, and last year hosted 1,096,980 passengers and 8,272 flights. It’s a busy airport, but nowhere near the capacity of its relative neighbour at Alicante-Elche. In 2014 and 2016, San Javier won the award for Best European Airport in the less than two million category, based on a survey of passengers looking at the all-round quality of the service on offer.

City gets police boost THE ALICANTE province has added 78 extra police officers to boost the existing force for the remainder of the summer season. They will be deployed throughout the region and comprise of 12 inspectors and 66 officers who are about to complete their special training periods of 11 and seven months respectively with some on-the-job work experience. Training courses at the National Police School in Avila last for nine months for police officers and two years for inspectors, and when they are out in the field they have the same authority of their senior counterparts. Broken down into areas, the 78 will be deployed to Alicante (8 inspectors and 20 officers), Alcoy (5 officers), Benidorm (2 in-
spectors and 15 officers), Denia (2 inspectors and 8 officers), Elche (5 officers) and Orihuela (8 officers). According to statistics, although Spain is still regarded as one of the safest countries in Europe, the National Police is working very hard to maintain this status. To continue to encourage visitors to return time and again, advice on safety and security is being offered in a series of languages through individual consular offices and at information points spread around the city. The recent addition of the Alertcops mobile app – available in almost 100 languages - has also enhanced the support given by the police; a quick notification sent from a phone if someone experiences or witnesses a crime can get attention in a fast and efficient manner.

STAYING SAFE: More officers to patrol the Alicante region
Locals love their buses ACCORDING to figures produced by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), people living in Murcia top the league across the country for increased use of buses. For June, the growth rate for the increase in bus passenger use was 7.6 per cent in Murcia where the national average was a mere 1.5 per cent. Increases in urban bus use were noted in nine autonomous communities across the country with Catalonia (4.4 per cent) and Valencia (4 per cent) in second and third place behind Murcia. Across the country, the number of users of public transport rose 4 per cent in June compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 418.7 million passengers.

by Glenn Scott TWO MEN and one woman have been arrested by police in Elche suspected of drug trafficking. The three detainees, aged between 26 and 37-years-old are Spanish and Colombian nationals. The group were dedicated to the sale and distribution of narcotics throughout Alicante and Murcia provinces and the authorities were alerted by a tip-off around three months ago from a resident in Elche that someone could be supplying drugs in the city. The prime suspect was then monitored for several weeks with the focus on where
he lived. They followed him to where he supplied the other members of the group before they continued with the ongoing distribution in the cities. The police eventually pounced on a car that contained all three of the suspects as they were about to take delivery of more drugs and found 2,2 kilograms of cocaine. In addition, when they searched the home of the main suspect, police found a further 100 grams of cocaine already prepared in small doses for sale, half a kilo of hashish, a substantial number of marijuana plants and a glass jar containing small blocks of hashish ready for selling. They also discovered €48,575 in cash.

Bus driver fails breath test
A DRIVER of a bus belonging to the ALSA company was found to be four times over the legal alcohol limit. He was driving on the route between Madrid and Murcia when some of the passengers realised the bus was swerving slightly from side to side and breaking erratically, with some of the manoeuvres attracting hoots from other motorists. The driver also repeatedly ignored re-
quests from travellers to put on the air conditioning. Those on board the 5.30pm service from Madrid eventually managed to persuade the driver to leave the A-3 motorway and pull in to a local service station 48 kilometres outside the city in Villarejo de Salvanés. As some took advantage of the stop to buy some much needed water due to the conditions on the bus, others called 112 to alert the Local
police and the Guardia Civil. They tested the driver who gave readings of 0.81 and 0.77 milligrams of alcohol. The second result – which is the more accurate figure – was four times over the legal limit for professional drivers that is set at 0.15. Once the driver failed the test, the Guardia Civil contacted ALSA and a replacement was sent to carry on the journey after a four hour delay.

Carob thief arrested in the act by Steve Collins OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a man for stealing 200 kilos of carob plant from a farm in Miranda, Cartagena. The 25-year-old Romanian national was caught after the farm owner had called the police about a large amount of the plant had gone missing.
Officers visited the farm and found a car driven by a young man, accompanied by woman who was nursing a baby believed to be just a few days old. A search of the car found the 200 kilos of carob which were returned to its rightful owner.

Carry on...with the inconvenience ONE of the many portable toilets that have been installed in Elche to cope with the influx of thousands of people for this week’s fiestas has caused a bit of a stink. Owner of a bar in Calle Ramón Vicente Serrano, Roberto Sentenero, has complained about one of the toilets placed right in front of the door of his establishment. This has caused untold inconvenience to patrons of the bar, particularly the unpleasant odours produced by the many people using
the facilities during the fiestas. Sentenero said: “It doesn’t make any sense for them to put one of the portaloos in front of my bar when the main fiesta is some 300 metres away. They haven’t dared place them in front of other premises as the owners have threatened to burn them down.”
Popular street seller loses pitch ONE of the permanent fixtures in the centre of Alicante has disappeared after 27 years. Jose López, 68, who sold sticks of liquorice in the city for all that time has been fined for operating illegally and stopped selling his wares. Residents and tourists alike have grown up with Jose on the corner of the Avenida Maisonnave – close to El Corte Inglés – and many wondered where he was when they missed him in his usual spot. Some feared the worst, but later bumped into him in the city and he told them of his fate. Jose has admitted that what he was doing was illegal and now waits to see whether he gets the lowest fine (€100) or the highest for the infringement (€3,000).

Ten injured in bus crash ALL THREE sections of the emergency services were called to the scene of a bus crash in the centre of Alicante. Nine passengers and the driver were taken to two local hospitals suffering from a variety of light
injuries. They were aged between 23 and 60-years-old. According to the local police investigations unit, the accident happened as the Line 9 bus was travelling along the Avenida Jijona toward the city centre when, all
of a sudden and for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of his vehicle. One of the wing mirrors hit a tree; the bus then mounted the pavement and then crashed into a palm tree before coming to a halt.
ACCORDING to the results of a study announced this week, Spanish pensioners living in Alicante are among the poorest paid in the country. The average state pension in the province stood at €798.16 per month while it reached €816.49 in Castellon and €885.49 in Valencia. The Alicante figure is €122.94 less than the average across Spain. Alicante stands at 12th in the list of lowest average pensions received although the union that carried out the research – Comisiones Obreras – believed that the situation may be worse than the figures suggest. The average monthly state pension in Spain is €1.047.83 for men and €671.37 for women – a difference of €376.56 – and confirms the belief that more women are facing poverty in retirement.

Giant excavator falls into sinkhole

A BUILDING excavator has fallen deep into a sinkhole that opened up on a site in Crevillente. The large machine was in the process of knocking down an abandoned building that contained 48 properties when all of a sudden the ground opened up taking everything in the vicinity down with it in the process. The operator of the digger escaped unharmed after part of his cab was crushed as his vehicle overturned as it collapsed into the hole. According to witnesses at the scene, it was the second basement level that gave way and explained why the digger ended up so far down. It was eventually lifted out by a crane and the remaining work on the site continued as normal.
BUZZ OFF: Winter rains increase pollen and the bees want it
by Glenn Scott BEACHGOERS got a rather nasty shock at the weekend when a swarm of bees engulfed them. As one group put their beach umbrella into the sand on the Playa San Juan in Alicante, they were descended upon by up to 50,000 bees that had come from a nearby apartment when the honeycomb nest had been disturbed. Police were called after a local beekeeper had attempted to remove the large nest at 7am when they are usu-
ally full of bees preparing for their day of seeking our pollen. He interrupted their slumber and was unable to catch all of them as they escaped, such was the overwhelming number. That same afternoon, another swarm made a beeline for a shade placed on the shoreline and shocked the occupants when they returned to their base having just been swimming. A team of firefighters dressed in beekeeping suits were deployed to catch the insects although it took them over 90 minutes to get them
all into a container after cordoning off the affected beach area. The beach was then declared safe. Beekeepers have been kept busy this summer. Less than a month ago, more than 60,000 bees were removed from a giant honeycomb in nearby El Campello. The heavy rains during the winter months have produced a larger than usual amount of flowers in the area and as a consequence, more of the queen bees are looking for more places to start their nests.
Foreign population on the decline
LATEST figures released in the annual report of the Murcia Economic and Social Council show that the foreign population throughout the region is falling.
Only immigrants from China and Colombia have shown an increase, with 3.7 per cent and 3.2 per cent respectively. Specifically, a total of
197,737 foreigners are registered in the Murcia region which is a drop of 1.8 per cent compared to the equivalent 2016 figures. This is the seventh
year in succession that the foreign population has decreased, down by 44,128 since the maximum was reached in 2010; a drop of 18 per cent.
Canal mess raises local concerns

WHEN local La Marina resident Dave Moore went out for his daily cycle ride, he was shocked at what he was greeted with as he left the urbanisation. At the end of the road from San Fulgencio, where the bottom entrance is located, is the canal which is often home to many fishermen along the bank. “I was quite disgusted by the state of the water,” said Dave. “All this plastic will end up in the sea eventually and will go on to kill many sea creatures. I’d already seen a couple of dead fish in the canal. Why can’t the authorities clean this mess up?”

VISITORS to the island of Tabarca will no longer have to worry about standing around in the sun waiting to return from their trip. After two years of residents and tourists demanding the replacement of the existing sun shades that had reached a poor state of repair, new awnings are now proudly displayed on the jetty. The problem had been exposed during this summer of record breaking temperatures. Councillor for tourism, Eva Montesinos, confirmed that there will be more investment into the COVERincreasingly popular island destination UP: No more located off the coast between Alicante waiting and Santa Pola. She said that the in the wooded walkways around the showers sun for on the beach had been improved and Tabarca’s tourists the tourist office has been renovated.

by Fabio Delucci A 7.0-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck a remote, mountainous part of China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, killing 19 people, including eight tourists, and injuring 247, the provincial government and official media said on Wednesday. The quake hit a sparsely populated area 200 km northwest of the city of Guangyuan late on Tuesday at a depth of 10 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was also close to the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve, a tourist destination. Sichuan is frequently struck by tremors. A huge quake there in May 2008 killed almost 70,000 people. The Sichuan government said rescuers were gradually evacuating tourists and residents who had been cut off by landslides. It added that 19 people had been killed, but most of those injured were not seriously hurt. The dead included eight tourists, two residents and nine whose identities have yet to be confirmed at the time of printing.

Man arrested after ramming car into soldiers in Paris French police shot and arrested a man on Wednesday suspected of deliberately ramming his car into a group of soldiers in a Parisian suburb hours earlier, injuring six of them in what the government called a deliberate attack. Armed police from elite units tracked the fugitive for five hours after the attack before cornering him on a motorway in northern France and shooting him several times. The suspect was unarmed when he was trapped by police some 260 km north of Paris where he had attacked the soldiers in the affluent suburb of Levallois-Perret, a judicial source said. The man appeared to have lain in wait for the soldiers in a pedestrian zone near their base in Levallois-Perret on the northwestern edge of the capital where France's domestic counter-terrorism agency is based. He accelerated his BMW car into the troops, who were starting their patrol, when they were a few metres away, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, before speeding off and sparking a huge manhunt. ‘This was a deliberate act, not an accident,’ Collomb told reporters outside the hospital where the three more seriously injured victims were being treated. He said a terrorism investigation had been launched. The French press named the suspect as 37-year-old Hamou B., originally from Satrouville west of Paris and said that searches had been carried out at his home and those of his associates. Levallois-Perret is about 5 km (3 miles) from city centre landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Elysee Presidential Palace.

by Rose Holmes Chronic overcrowding in some of Spain's beloved tourism hotspots such as Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca is fuelling an angry backlash, from polite protest to ‘Go Home’ graffiti and even physical intimidation. Residents are complaining that a sharp rise in tourism is making life intolerable. In Barcelona, where anger has been brewing for some time, some graffiti has turned menacing. One slogan, featuring a black silhouette with a red target on its head, reads: ‘Why call it tourist season if we can't shoot them?’ Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy intervened this week after some anti-tourist anger turned physical. A video emerged of masked activists setting off flares outside a restaurant full of tourists on the island of Palma de Mallorca. They then entered the restaurant and threw confetti at frightened diners. Rajoy described the activists as ‘extremists going against common sense’. Tourism makes up 12 per cent of Spain's economy. Holiday destinations have proven to be popular hiding places for criminals on the run from law enforcement. They might even have chosen the same destination as you. That’s why your information can be vital to catch some of Europe’s Most Wanted fugitives. Law enforcement across Europe, through the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST) and Europol, are asking for your help to find out their exact locations, to ensure they take responsibility for their serious crimes. These postcards have been created on www.eumostwanted.eu/ summercampaign feature Europe’s Most Wanted fugitives, who have committed serious crimes in 21 EU countries, for whom tradi-
tional investigative measures have so far not led to the locations of the suspects. They are believed to be hiding in a different country to where the crime was committed, and the members of ENFAST are working closely together to make sure these fugitives do not evade justice. The majority of these criminals have committed murders, fraud or other serious offences, or are trafficking drugs. One of the UK’s most wanted men is Derek Ferguson, wanted on suspicion of murder. Ferguson is sought in connection with the murder of Thomas Cameron on 28th June 2007 at the Auchinairn Tavern, Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow. He is described as between 5ft and 5ft 2 tall. He has green/blue eyes and short, balding brown/grey hair.

Illegal advertising withdrawn AFTER months of warnings, Murcia city council has this week begun to remove dozens of illegal advertising sites. The owners of more than 150 unauthorised poster locations will have to pay the authorities for the costs of taking down the offending items, estimated to be in the region of €1,000 per advertising post. Councillor José Guillén, confirmed that
the operation had begun to rid the city of the advertising boards that had been erected without the authorisation of the council. These actions shouldn’t come as a shock to the owners as they had been notified by a series of different methods over a period of time, with the final announcement appearing in an Official State Gazette (BOE) the day before the removal operation began.

Terror suspect arrested in Spain Spanish police detained a suspect sought by an Interpol international arrest warrant through a request made by Turkey, reports said Tuesday. According to reports, 59-year-old Hamza Yalcın, who is accused of terror charges, was detained by the police in Barcelona. Yalcın has reportedly been living in Sweden for the past 30 years and was in Spain for a weekend getaway. He was detained Thursday as he was heading to London through passport control at Barcelona–El Prat Airport. Reports said that he was arrested based on an Interpol warrant issued by Turkey. Yalcın is accused of plotting terrorist acts at Odak Dergisi magazine. He is a dual citizen of Turkey and Sweden and is expected to be extradited to Turkey.

Will the Balearics’ say bye-bye to Airbnb? by Tahnee Wright The Balearic Islands ruled on Tuesday that they will penalise landlords for illegally renting apartments to tourists with fines of up to €40,000 euros, amid a backlash against the effects of mass tourism across the country. The move is an escalation in efforts to crack down on home-sharing sites such as Airbnb by city councils or local authorities in Spain, as concern mounts over the sideeffects of their increasing popularity. Airbnb, much like ride-hailing firm Uber, is facing a crackdown from legislators worldwide triggered in part by lobbying from the
hotel industry which sees the rental service as unfair competition. In the Balearic Islands, which drew more foreign visitors than any other region in Spain this June, rental costs have jumped and there are fears of a housing shortage for residents. Rental prices in Palma de Mallorca, the Mediterranean archipelago's biggest city, have risen 40 per cent in the last five years, according to property platform Mitula. The island of Ibiza has the biggest density of Airbnb rentals, with a tourist apartment for every 30 residents, data from analytics firm Airdna showed. Renting apartments without a licence was banned in the region in 2012 under a
previous administration but enforcement was largely nonexistent, according to the Balearic government. The new legislation establishes fines of between €20,000 and €40,000 for those offering short rentals without a license to tourists. Local residents will be able to report suspected illegal flats though a website, and online platforms such as Airbnb and Homeaway could also face fines of up to €400,000 if they are found to advertise rentals without a license number. The Balearics' four islands will each have a year to decide if and where they will allow licensed tourist rentals to continue.

Clarkson in hospital in Spain Jeremy Clarkson has been hospitalised with pneumonia while on holiday in Mallorca. Clarkson, host of Amazon's The Grand Tour motoring show, was hospitalised last Friday. He posted an image on social media on Saturday showing his arm with a hospital identity badge. The 57-year-old joked: ‘not the sort of bangles I usually choose on holiday.’
Clarkson had been on holiday with his family after shooting the Amazon Prime show with co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May. The trio are the former hosts of the BBC programme Top Gear. They signed with Amazon for The Grand Tour after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer in a dust-up while filming.
Australia could legalise same-sex marriage by as early as the end of this year, after the government announced an attempt to hold a national vote on the issue. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday he would ‘give all Australians a say’ on whether same-sex marriage should be legal. "I'll be voting yes, as will my wife, I'm very open about that but the Australian people are never wrong when they vote, whether it's for governments or on matters like this, their vote will be respected," Turnbull said. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since July 3, 2005. Approximately 4,500 same-sex couples married in Spain during the first year of the law. In England and Wales, same-sex marriage was legalised on March 13, 2014 and the first same-sex marriages took place on March 29, 2014.

After realising a mistake had been made, Cardiff’s City Arms offered the clergymen a round of free drinks to apologise, the Archdiocese of Cardiff said in a blog post on Tuesday. Arriving at the pub last Saturday to celebrate the ordination of Father Peter McLaren, the priests were told by a bartender that the City Arms did not serve large groups in fancy dress. The archdiocese said they had started to leave when another staff member said he believed they were real priests and invited them back in for a free drink. ‘We’d like to thank The City Arms for being good sports through all of this and their kind gesture to our seminarians,’ the blog post said. It said the priests had initially thought the bartender was joking when he mistook them for a stag party.

Juzcar, a small village in the province of Malaga once known as one of the ‘White Towns of Andalusia’, shot to fame in 2011 when buildings in the town (including the church and gravestones) were painted smurf-blue by Sony Pictures to celebrate the premiere of the Smurfs movie in Spain. Sony offered to repaint the village – home to only 240 inhabitants - white later that year but residents voted to leave the buildings painted blue, as an estimated 80,000 tourists visited ‘Smurf village’ in the six months following the repainting - the town normally had seen 300 tourists per year. Entrepreneuring locals soon realised they could further cash in on their blue village - adorning walls with paintings
of Smurfs, cramming stalls with Smurf souvenirs and some locals even dressing up as Smurf characters to pose for photos. ‘Smurf village’ is reported to have attracted 50,000 tourists a year over the past six years. But a recent dispute between the town hall and the estate of the Smurf creator, Belgian comics artist Pierre Culliford whose pen name was Peyo, resulted in the estate demanding 12 per cent in royalties on all Smurf-related income. The town hall couldn’t reach an agreement with the estate so, from August 15, there will be no more references to the small blue figures. However, the houses will remain painted blue.
Danish Queen's husband refuses to share her grave Prince Henrik of Denmark announced recently that he does not wish to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, saying he is unhappy he was never acknowledged as her equal. Henrik, 83, who married Queen Margrethe in 1967, was later named the Queen's Prince Consort, but has repeatedly said he would have liked to be named King Consort. The Royal Danish House's director of communications told Reuters: ‘For the Prince, the decision not to buried beside the Queen is the natural conse- quence of not having been treated equally to his spouse - by not having the title and role he has desired,’ she added. Prince Henrik retired last year and renounced his title of Prince Consort. Since then he has participated in very few official duties and instead spent much of his time at his private vineyard in France, although he is still married to the queen and they officially live together.

This week I promised we’d go on to something new. We’re going to spend a bit of time looking at nouns, followed later on by adjectives, before we return to the construction of complete sentences using verbs. Before we do that though, I always think it’s a good idea to summarise where we’re up to, so here are the things we have covered in the first seven lessons of this series. First of all we have learnt some thirty verbs in their infinitive, or basic form. That is the form that we translate as “to ….” and which in Spanish ends in either – ar, -er or –ir. Then we have seen that certain verb forms related to “I” can go in front of these to make a basic sentence structure. Quiero (I want); puedo (I can); necesito (I need); voy a (I’m going to); me gusta (I like); prefiero (I prefer) and tengo que (I have to). We have also looked at three examples where changing these forms slightly gives us a “you” sentence – vas a (you are going to); quieres (you want); tienes que (you have to). In addition we have learnt the link words pero, (but) and para (in order to), which allow us to extend our sentences to make them more complete and meaningful. Now to today’s business– nouns. The word “noun” simply means the name of something, so it refers to
people and things like “man” and “table” and also ideas and feelings like “democracy” and “happiness”. We also have what we call “proper nouns” which are specific names like “Mary” or “England”. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter in English and Spanish: “María”, “Inglaterra”. The way the English language is structured it is not important at all whether a noun refers to a male or a female. We simply have different words (man, woman, stallion, mare etc.) whilst everything else is simply a neutral object (table, car, chair, paper). In Spanish every noun is considered to be either masculine or feminine, so just as hombre (man) and mujer (woman) are masculine and feminine, so words for objects are too: mesa (table – feminine); coche (car – masculine); silla (chair – feminine); papel (paper – masculine). Now it is very important for us to realise that the concept of “masculine” and “feminine” does not relate to the thing itself but to the word. In other words we shouldn’t be thinking about why a table is considered feminine and a car is considered masculine, we simply need to accept that the word mesa is a feminine word and coche is a masculine word. To illustrate this point, here are some examples: vestido (dress – masculine), camisa (shirt – feminine), bolsa (general word for “bag” - feminine), bolso (handbag – masculine). Even more interesting persona (person – feminine) and víctima (victim – feminine); in all these examples and many more the gender of the word bears no relation to the gender identification of the ob-
ject or person. So, two questions need answering before we continue talking about this matter next week. Firstly, how do we know when a word is masculine or feminine? and secondly, why is it important? In answer to the first question, it is very common for masculine words to end in the letter “o” and feminine words to end in the letter “a”, although this is not always the case. There are some exceptions that are the other way round, and also many words that end in different letters. However, it is quite a good indicator to start with. Then there are certain characteristic endings. Two of the most common examples are words that end in –dad and –ción which are always feminine. Now the second question – Why is it important? To be honest at the early stages of language learning, when you only know a few words and are getting simple messages across to people (like how many beers you want), then it really doesn’t matter very much at all. However, as you progress with the language you start to discover that this masculine/ feminine divide runs right through the language and affects a lot of other words in a sentence. So to learn to speak correct Spanish we have to get to grips with the idea.

L. Mencken. No thanks to media we are very much in the dark as to what happens even in our own backyard. There is little awareness that Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban enjoys a popularity rating that far eludes his Western counterparts. In Britain, Germany, France, and different EU states, the electorate elect the lesser of two evils. French President Emmanuelle Macron’s election was spun as a landslide. Yet, polls suggest that as few as one in five French electors support their head of state. This is not democracy. In Sweden, 72.9 per cent of the electorate plan to vote for parties other than the ruling Social Democrats. In Norway 68 per cent intend to vote against the current Labour regime. To avoid electoral defeat unpopular regimes form coalitions. Britain’s premier Theresa May was forced to form a coalition with 10 MPs of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). This is not democracy either. Westerners believe their older electoral systems superior to former Soviet Bloc nations. Not true: Countries like Slovakia, Poland, and Czech Republic
and in particular Hungary set an example in democracy that shames western governments. Hungary’s Fidesz Party, headed by Victor Orban, enjoys a level of support far beyond the dreams of Chancellor Merkel, President Macron and UK premier Theresa May. Seven years since elected Fidesz is more popular than ever. The right-nationalist party polled in excess of 60 per cent of votes cast during recent elections. Unlike their western peers Hungary’s parliamentarians can truthfully say they are elected because they are good at their job. Fidesz popularity has been achieved by doing something quite revolutionary to western ears. Their parliamentarians actually listen to their electorate, government policies reflect the wishes of Hungarians. There are 25 per cent more Hungarians in work today than there were in 2010. The government recovered and revitalised industries, public utilities and natural resources that had been auctioned off to foreign interests by corrupt predecessors. Hungarians fear their being dependent upon the whims of outside interests. Foreign influence has been eliminated in banking, media, and state and education sectors. Non-European immigrants are kept out whilst ethnic Hungarians are presented with an eyewatering choice of inducements to marry and raise large families.
Hungarian PM, Czech and Polish parliamentarians respond to EU threats and sanctions with the two-fingered salute. So they should; 98 per cent Hungarians reject Brussels impudent immigrant quotas. Irony is that there is far greater division of wealth, happiness and democracy in the EU than there was when Europe was separated by anti-tank ditches, razor wire, watchtowers and border checkpoints. How long before Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia erect them again to keep the westerners out.
City slickers: one in seven have not gone for a rural stroll in the past two years or longer
CITY BOUND: Get out and go for a walk
A survey found that 13 per cent of Brits hadn’t gone for a stroll in the countryside for the past 24 months or more, with some confessing to being ‘city-bound’ for even longer. More than one-third of those quizzed said they didn’t have a clue about wildlife and wouldn’t be able to teach their kids about the great outdoors. One-third also couldn’t identify a barn owl from a photo and two-thirds had no idea what a turtle dove was. Amazingly, one-in-five of the people polled said they had never seen a toad, with one-in-seven saying they had never seen a hedgehog. One-in-three couldn’t identify an oak
tree, with three-quarters unable to pick out a hawthorn or ash tree. The study was commissioned by Jordans Cereal on behalf of the Jordans Farm Partnership and of the 2,000 Brits polled, seven-in-10 said they felt that they had lost touch with nature. Gary Cunningham, 37, of Hackney, east London, said: ‘I used to go to the countryside all the time as a kid, but in the last few years I’ve been stuck in the city.’ ‘It’s hard to get away, what with work and seeing friends at the weekends.’ ‘The last time I went away to the countryside was in 2014 when I went to Wales on a camping trip – it rained all week and I’ve not been out of the city since!’

Spare the rod, pay the price When I read of the goings on in some UK schools today; with pupil-on- teacher violence, savage bullying and a total disrespect for authority, it horrifies me. Sure in my day we may have transported the art master’s cycle from the bike sheds to the roof on one occasion, and sent an explicit Valentine’s card to the P.E. master’s house – he was distinctly unhappy about that, but not as unhappy as his wife who happened to open it – but these were just relatively harmless pranks compared to the stuff we hear about today. And remember, those were the days when limited corporal punishment was acceptable in schools, and the cane was a useful and effective deterrent administered in our case, by the deputy head. The liberal minded will advocate that corporal punishment was a bad thing and that violence only begets violence. But having been schooled during the 50’s and early part of the 60’s, and seen the results, I say nonsense. Individual masters were also permitted to mete out their own punishment as and when required and
one such was Mr Treweek-Dew an English teacher, who kept ‘Rudolph’ hanging from a chain on the blackboard. ‘Dewey’ was a bear-like man, who paced the school corridors menacingly. With his military style moustache, and tweed jacket that looked as if the coat hanger had been left in, he was a formidable figure. ‘Rudolph’ was a black plimsoll and was a constant visible reminder to pay very close attention to the pearls of wisdom imparted to us. We often speculated why the shoe was called Rudolph, and the nearest we came to an answer was that Rudolph tended to leave you with a very red extremity. These realities however held no dread for us and we looked upon them as natural and just, and all part of a happy and balanced school life. As for the teachers themselves, much of it was implied rather than applied, sometimes with tongue in cheek and often with humour. We knew just how far to take things, and if we exceeded the limits, we accepted the consequences - and all with the full approval of our parents. That being said, I have to reluctantly go along with the PC brigade who dictate that children today should never be physically punished either in school or by their parents. No really I do. I mean, some of those little darlings carry knives!
Two more additions at the Rescue Centre Two pony stallions – one skeletal and near starving, the other with severe back wounds – are now recovering at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales. Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding are concerned about the escalating costs of caring for the 107 rescued equines now in their care, but couldn’t say no when contacted at the end of July by El Refugio del Burrito donkey rescue centre, which does not take ponies. “He was tied to a tree in Lorca, almost two hours south of us here at Rojales, and abandoned without any food or water,” Sue said. “We were told this poor pony would simply be left on the street if we did not take him.
How could we ignore such a terrible case of suffering?” Veterinary inspections revealed he has numerous health concerns, in addition to his skeletal state. He has an abscess or tumour that’s pushing one eye out of its socket, a mouth infection, blood coming from his penis and is full of worms. “For now, he just needs to eat; get a bit stronger and we can start to find the best way forward. He’ll definitely fit in here with all our other residents that have problems and disabilities, as he’s got quite a few,” said Sue. Sale and purchase of houses in Spain rose sharply in June, figures from the statistical office INE revealed on Tuesday. House transactions in urban areas grew 19.3 per cent year-on-year in June, but fell 1.4 per cent from the previous month. The number of units transacted were 44,135. Overall property transactions rose 9.7 per cent from a year ago to 166,830 units. Of the total property purchases in June 86.8 per cent were urban properties and within that 57.8 per cent were housing sales. Rural property transfers grew 5.9 per cent.

The European Commission, which oversees competition issues, said that investigators concluded ‘the transaction would not raise
competition concerns’ in Europe's economic area. It said their combined market share would be limited and that strong competitors remain in all markets affected by the move. Santander acquired Banco Popular in an overnight auction in June for €1 after the European Central Bank warned that Spain's No. 6 bank by assets was on the verge of collapse
– a deal showcasing Europe's new system to rescue failing banks without burdening taxpayers or markets. The Spanish government said that Popular would not have been able to remain open without the buyout, adding that it had both preserved people's savings and avoided the expenditure of any public funds in keeping the bank afloat.
Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest lender, is putting its business with private customers in Spain up for sale as it continues to consolidate its activities, according to financial sources. THERE ARE some words in the English language that make me snigger like a schoolboy everytime I hear or read them. ‘Succulent’, always makes me giggle when I say it, which is a pity, because I have a sneaky liking for the succulent plants that are a staple of the Spanish garden and terrace, owing to their survival on minimal watering. The best way to think of succulents is as ‘fat plants’ as parts of them, usually their leaves, swell up with water and this stops them from drying out in arid conditions. Cacti are the most obvious examples but sedums and sempervivums are also common, as they all share that fleshy, tender look and often have grey-green leaves, though there are plenty of others with leaves in colours that range from black and red through to yellow. HER INDOORS: Succulents make fantastic houseplants, because they like dry air so are perfect for our Spanish homes and don’t need to be watered very often. They require lots of light, however, so place them near or on a windowsill and make sure their roots are very well drained. For a lovely display try gathering different

coloured but similar-sized, rosetteforming sempervivums together in a shallow white bowl. A good place to start is with echeverias; maybe mixing red-pink Echeveriaagavoides ‘Lipstick’ with grey and purple Echeveriaagavoides ‘Vashon’. If you do have a disaster and the plant looks as though it’s dead, don’t write it off straightaway. Succulents have the capacity to rise again, so give the plant some tender, loving care and wait at least four weeks to see if it revives. OUTDOORSY TYPES: Hardy sempervivums and sedums, many of

Have a super succulent summer inside and out which will survive unprotected in frosts, are the most common succulents for planting outdoors. As with the indoor variety, the best sempervivums have interesting varieties of tight rosettes. Sempervivumcalcareum has grey-green rosettes with lovely contrasting red tips, and Sempervivum ‘Moerkerk’s Merit’ is silvery- green with a soft velvet sheen. Sedums are small- to medium-sized evergreen perennials, which are perfect for the front of the border and look amazing when planted en masse across a whole bed. Try the grey-purple combinations you get with
Sedum ‘Ruby Glow’ or the tiny ground cover stonecrop Sedum cauticola. These outdoor plants really look after themselves. In the spring cut back any dead or damaged stems or leaves right down to the base. LOVE ME TENDER: If you don’t mind spending some time looking after them, tender succulents can look amazing outdoors. The plant that every garden designer loves is Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’, which has almost pure black rosettes of leaves on the ends of strong stalks. This purpley-black mixes beautifully with so many other colours such as the lime green leaves and flowers of euphorbia or grasses, or the pink flowers of Lychniscoronaria – creating a dramatic, exciting look. Other amazing succulents are agaves, so exotic and impressive, they have spears of fleshy leaves coming from a central point. Two favourites are the smaller grey-leaved ones such as Agave parrasana or Agave parryi, which look great individually planted in terracotta pots and displayed in a regimented line.
UK landlords’ energy ratings reminder
PERHAPS you’re living in Spain but you have rented out a private or business property? Are you aware of the new regulations brought in as part of the Energy Efficiency (Private Rented Property England and Wales) Regulations 2015 Act? As of April 2018 commercial and domestic landlords will need to make sure all rented properties achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of at least an E rating. The EPC is a central component of the government’s strategy to improve the energy performance of property in Britain. An ‘A’ EPC is considered the most efficient and a ‘G’ rating the least efficient – properties with higher ratings will have lower on-going energy costs and have been to found to achieve a higher sales valuation. An EPC assessment will outline what energy efficiency measures can be installed to increase the overall rating of the property – Government guidance states that where the measure has a pay back is under seven years it will be
expected that measures are installed. One of the improvements recommended by the Residential Landlords Association to meet the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards is to have sustainable energy systems installed in a property. Air Source heat pumps, solar hot water and solar PV are all recognised ways of increasing an EPC rating and lowering energy costs. Solar PV systems can also create an ongoing revenue stream for landlords through the feed in tariff initiative. System owners can generate low carbon energy to sell to the grid and to their tenants too – many Landlords increase the revenue generated by their properties by investing in solar. Lower cost measures such as LED lighting, draught proofing and increasing insulation levels all improve the energy efficiency of properties for a small price. There are a number of companies with EPC assessors that can provide advice to Property Professionals on how to ensure you comply with these new regulations.

Hair today..... THIS time of the year is usually quiet for fund raising for the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) but 2017 is bucking the trend with two very different events taking place recently. Firstly, a fantastic weekend of golf and entertainment with snooker ace and king of the 147s, Willie Thorne, was organised by John Williams and his mother Karen (who just happens to be the secretary of the Pink Ladies) from the Evolution Bar, La Fuente. The two day spectacular began with breakfast at the bar before the 50 golfers made the trip to Lo Romero to take part in a

Whilst the golfers were busy trying to win, come rain or shine, the ladies partook in a Bucks Fizz brunch at Evolution. Just Ollie was on hand to entertain whilst the delicious taster menu was enjoyed, followed by Willie and the golfers returning to join the ladies for a relaxing afternoon during which a raffle was held and a chance to have an informal chat with the snooker star and his charming wife Jill. The charity day continued into Sunday evening and moved on to Fairways Restau-
rant in Villamartin Plaza, hosted by Roy and Karen, where diners were greeted on arrival by cava and canapés before enjoying a delicious three-course dinner. Throughout the evening, guest of honour Willie Thorne kept the guests entertained with some of his great stories and anecdotes and also presented the winning golfers with their awards. Following the auction of snooker memorabilia, popular singer Chloe Leigh had the crowd dancing the night away. Organisers Karen and John would like to take this opportunity to thank Willie and Jill
Thorne and the other Karen and Roy of Fairways, as well as Gavin from Albatross Golf – to name but a few – and to everyone that contributed to an excellent day and a fantastic amount of €1,300 raised. In another event held at Hermanos Bar in Playa Flamenca, the very brave Dominique Le Gac, Paul Dowinton and Brian Shephard all had their heads shaved in memory of a loved one they had each lost to cancer. Barber Steve (Shaftoe) kindly donated his time to remove the prized locks of hair. A cheque for €1,365 was presented to Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers.

Kenny, I recently took some photos and above my husband’s head there are many circles of light. Looking at the scene through my camera there is nothing, but after the photo is taken there are several discs hovering above him. Is something bad going to happen? Penny H-S.
I certainly hope not Penny! Such orbs are transmissions of energy from the Spirit World. I visited the Viking Museum in Oslo and took many photos of the Ships on display. One Ship had two big orbs and four smaller ones at the back of the craft. A custodian told me that this was a funeral ship and that the bodies of two adults and four children were discovered there. Is it possible that your husband has had a recent bereavement? Such an energy force can be the silent message that Spirit send to just say that all is well and that they are safe. Less is often more THERE ARE many well-known big local organisations up and down the Costa Blanca and beyond that raise enormous amounts of money for charities and other good causes. Often, some of the smaller groups doing an equally fine job get unintentionally ignored and their efforts unrecognised...until now. Janine Williams is responsible for organising a group called Ladies who Lunch. They meet once a month not only for a convivial lunch in various venues in the area but also raise money and make their own significant contributions to charities. They have been going for seven years and just celebrated their anniversary complete with a cake. During that time, this small group has raised a fantastic sum in excess of €20,000. The other organisation that
takes up much of Janine’s time is FAB. Nothing to do with Thunderbirds as in this case, FAB stands for Friends After Bereavement, a group set up to bring together men and women of all ages that have suffered the loss of a wife, husband, partner, soulmate or other
family members. They get the chance to share their experiences but at the same time make new friends and enjoy social occasions. They also raise money for local organisations, the latest being two donations totalling €540 to the Tasha Appeal which is one of the more

RESEARCH suggests that 30 per cent of children, 45 per cent of teenagers, 25 per cent of young adults, and five per cent of older adults bite their nails, with the aesthetic consequences being the most obvious. For some people, the social stigma and embarrassment as to the look of their nails causes them to become depressed, isolated, or avoid activities they would otherwise enjoy. Beyond this, however, are there other health reasons to worry if you regularly bite your nails? Disease-Causing Bacteria Your nails are an ideal location for bacteria
to thrive, and that includes potentially pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli (which would love to call the underside of your nail tips home). As you bite your nails, those bacteria easily transfer into your mouth and the rest of your body, where they may lead to infections. Your fingernails may actually be twice as dirty as your fingers, considering they're difficult to keep clean, making this a prime point of transfer for infectious organisms. Nail Infections Nail biters are susceptible to paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around your
nails. As you chew your nails, bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms can enter through tiny tears or abrasions, leading to swelling, redness, and pus around your nail. Dental Problems Nail biting can interfere with proper dental occlusion, or the manner in which your upper and lower teeth come together when you close your mouth. Your teeth may shift out of their proper position, become misshapen, wear down prematurely, and become weakened if you bite your nails over time.
Documentary likens one egg to five cigarettes A new documentary produced by Joaquin Phoenix is coming under fire from doctors and scientists over its bold claims about the adverse effects of consuming eggs
and meat. A recent arrival on Netflix, What the Health asserts that eating one egg per day is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes and consuming a single portion of processed meat increases the risk of diabetes by 51 per cent. These facts are listed on the documentary’s homepage, along with links to sources from medical journals but a handful of venerable doctors and scientists recently spoke out to the British press, saying that these sources can’t be trusted. Alexandra Freeman, the
executive director of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, told the Times UK that the statistic about eggs is from ‘an extremely controversial paper,’ while a cancer researcher named Alice Howarth remarks: ‘What the Health overwhelms the viewer with scaremongering ‘facts’ which do not hold up to scientific investigation.’ As for the meat-diabetes connection, that statistic comes from one journal that cited the relative risk of increase, not the absolute risk. Freeman notes: ‘An ‘increase’ can be
made to look huge, but if it’s an increase from a tiny value to another tiny value then that puts a whole different perspective on it.’ Have you seen What the Health?
Check those moles
ON AVERAGE, men go to their GP half as often as women. It's important to be aware of changes to your health, and to see your GP immediately if you notice something's not right. This week, we look at moles. Some moles are present at birth, although most develop during the first 30 years of life. People with fair skin often have more moles than people with darker skin and you are more likely to develop lots of moles, or a certain type of mole, if they are common in your family. Where you were brought up may also make a difference; for example, if you were born in a hot country or have spent many years living in the sun, you may have a lot of small moles. Most moles are completely harmless. However, they may be unsightly and affect your confidence. Moles can also be a nuisance, especially if they regularly catch on your clothing or you cut them while shaving. See your GP if a mole looks unusual or becomes itchy. It can then be checked and removed surgically if needed, although it can be an expensive process. To minimise the risk of skin cancer, always try to avoid exposure to the sun between 11am and 3pm. Remember ‘slip, slap, slop’ and use a cream with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Finally, you should check your skin every few months for any new moles that develop (particularly after your teenage years, when new moles become less common) or any changes to existing moles; remember, a mole can change in weeks or months.

Stuffed sweet pototo melt This dish is a favourite for vegetarians in ‘The Pub’ but why not try at home as either a starter or as part of a main dish. Ingredients:
4 sweet potatoes taleggio cheese or brie can be used 6 large onions brown sugar vegetable oil splash white wine sprinkling of dried thyme sprigs of parsley to garnish
Method:
Put the potatoes in a preheated oven for about 30-40 mins, test with a knife to make sure the potatoes are soft and set aside. Caramalise the onions over a low heat adding the wine and brown sugar. Make sure you cook them slowly to get the full flavor and so they are nice and
brown and soft. Cut the potatoes in half and place on a baking sheet, pile the onions on top, then add the cheese and thyme. Place under a pre-heated grill until the cheese is bubbling and begins to go brown. Serve with the sprigs of parsley and crisp green salad.

Ingredients:
4 large grapefruit, peeled and sectioned, 4 avocados - peeled, pitted, and sliced, 1/3 cup orange juice, 1/3 cup olive oil, 3 tablespoons lime juice, 2 tablespoons honey, salt and cracked black pepper to taste
Method:
Arrange the grapefruit sections and avocado slices attractively in a shallow serving dish. In a bowl, whisk together the orange juice, olive oil, lime juice,
and honey until well combined; drizzle the dressing over the grapefruit and avocado slices. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Serve immediately.

New face of the Kia Sportage The all-new Sportage also has a 30 mm longer wheelbase, a 40 mm greater overall vehicle length, a more aerodynamic rear spoiler, longer front overhangs and shorter rear overhangs. The wheel arches on the press vehicle were filled with 19” alloy wheels shod with low profile 245/45R19 tyres. The completely redesigned interior features high quality materials and design integrity, as well as great practicality and a range of technologies to improve comfort, convenience, connectivity and safety. THE KIA SPORTAGE originally launched at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2015, has done good business for the brand and has now been superseded by the latest model which aims to continue the trend. With bold styling and a spacious interior packed with more technology than ever before. The new fourth-generation Sportage models are built at KIA’s manufacturing facility in Žilina, Slovakia and comprise of five models. The derivative featured in these first impressions is the new to the range, Kia Sportage 2.4 GDI SX AWD. Peugeot takes the Silk Way Rally PEUGEOT has triumphed again on the Silk Way Rally, which took place from Russia to China over two weeks, having also claimed the event last year with Cyril Despres. The French brand set off from the start in Moscow with three cars: one Peugeot DKR Maxi for Loeb, and
finger and couldn’t continue. Despite this misfortune, the French duo gained more experience and know-how of tackling long distance events. Stéphane Peterhansel, the winner of the Dakar Rally this year (and the most successful driver in Dakar history) had his chances of Silk Way Rally victory ruined in the first week, when he lost two hours after an accident. Nonetheless, from the bottom of the overall classification he fought back resiliently to claim a top-five finish, setting more fastest stage times on the Silk Way Rally than any other driver. Not only that, but Peterhansel performed a vital role as ‘guardian angel’ over Despres in the closing stages of the rally, helping his colleague to maintain his leadership by being on hand to assist in the event of any issues. This proved to be invaluable, with Despres able to drive securely in the knowledge that his team mate was on hand.
“The rally did not end the way we wanted it to for myself and Daniel, but I’m very happy for the whole Peugeot team and especially Cyril and David for this important victory,” said Peterhansel. “It was also a great feeling to lead the event with a good margin during the first week, and I think the Maxi was a key factor in helping to achieve this, although it was more suited to certain stages than others. Now we will continue the development work, using all the important lessons we have learned from Silk Way, in preparation for the Dakar.”

The Peugeot DKR Maxi featured a wider track that was 10 centimetres longer on each side, as well as other technical improvements that were being trialled on the Silk Way Rally, for the Dakar Rally next year. Sebastien Loeb used it to lead the rally at an impressive pace for the first week, claiming four stage wins in total. With an advantage of more than an hour, Loeb crashed the day after the rest day in Urumqi while driving off the main track to avoid a rocky river bed. His car tripped over a drainage channel, damaging it badly, and although the DKR Maxi was eventually able to be repaired, Loeb sprained a

by Gary Routledge IT WAS an early start as I left the shop at 4.30 am accompanied by our apprentice mechanic Harry Morrow, Martyn Stone and Steve Turbo Buckley to travel 700kms to Pamplona in Navarre for the 2018 Pinarello roadshow and the 26th edition Miguel Indurain Sportif. Even though it was a long journey without any problems and quiet roads we arrived at our hotel safely at 12noon where we immediately noticed the change in temperature; it was 10 degrees colder up here. We unloaded our bikes and checked
in to our rooms then proceeded to the exhibition room where we watched a Pinarello presentation followed by lunch. We saw the exciting new 2018 Pinarello range in the afternoon and in the evening we all went to Villava, home town of Miguel Indurian, where we enjoyed dinner with the legend who afterwards gave an excellent talk about his life and cycling in general. We saw the display of bikes that he used when he won the Tour De France on 5 separate occasions, 1991, 92, 93, 94 and 95. The following day began with an early breakfast at 6am followed by a photo shoot with all the Pinarello dealers in Spain on
San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca NEARLY forty members and guests braved the very hot weather for the 4th round of the President’s Stableford Trophy. Thankfully, the afternoon breeze proved a welcome relief. The course at La Finca was playing very long with only 10 players breaking 30 points. The prize winners were: NTP’s: Norman Cahill (Hole 3), Darren Hancock (6), Norman Cahill (13) and Tony Smale (16). Top visitor on the day was David Bryant with 35 points; runner-up with 32 points was John Humphrey. Bronze category: 3rd - Kyree Skarsmoen (26 points), 2nd Chris Hamblett (28) and 1st – Keith Stevenson (30).
Silver category: 3rd – Ken Flaherty (31), 2nd – Phil deLacy (34) and 1st – Norman Cahill (36). Gold category: 3rd - Graham Temple (32), 2nd - Tony Smale (34) and 1st Barry Roehrig (36). The Abacus was won by Mick Roscoe as the two below him were not present. Thanks as always go to the Cascada Bar for the after match refreshments which, on this occasion, appeared to be more than enjoyed by Norman and Keith! Pinarello bikes in front of the Team Sky mechanics lorry. The race started at 8.30am – we were at the front alongside Miguel himself - and the 2000 riders were soon underway. There were many small accidents on route, including one motorcycle carrying a cameraman which collided with and knocked off eight cyclists. After three hours we returned to the town centre of Vallava where our group of approx. 20 riders sprinted for the line. I finished with Harry in 3 hours and 3 minutes and were 87th and 88th respectively. Steve Buckely was 150th in
Ruby’s Golf Society at Las Colinas AS usual, the course at Las Colinas was in excellent condition and played well. Hot weather accompanied the golfers although there was a little cloud cover for most of the day. Perhaps the conditions helped the quality of the play with quite a few players returning to the clubhouse with over 30 points on this trophy game, and will probably require an adjustment or two to the player of the year standings. Results: NTP on Par 3 holes: Bill Martin, Peter Jepson, Tony Alcock, Kevin Hufton and John Clancy. NTP in three shots: David
