by Tahnee Wright Marina Baixa farmers were shocked this week as they arrived at their farms to discuss the plague of Xylella Fastidiosa with the Ministry of Agriculture to find the ministry had already begun tearing their trees down one hour earlier. The farmers were told to meet with the ministry at 7.00am on Wednesday morning, also in attendance were local Mayors from Guadalest, Benifato, Benimantell, Confrides and Polop and a representative from ASAJA. However, arriving at the site, the
farmers were met by two machines and learnt that eight ministry workers had already destroyed 10 trees without prior discussion. The Guardia Civil were called to the scene and the ministry workers were stopped. The point of the meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture was to request a less aggressive protocol be applied where the Xylella Fastidiosa has been detected, to protect the livelihood of the farmers. The current protocol is in line with European Union regulations which dictate a plant found to be infected by Xylella fastidiosa
should be eradicated, along with all plants within 100 metres of it, even if they are not infected: ‘Strict eradication measures apply, consisting in a clear cut of all host plants of the specific subspecies of Xylella fastidiosa, irrespective of their health status, in a radius of 100 m around the infected plants.’ The Eruopean Union recognises these regulations impact on the local agro-economy: ‘Although these measures impact on the local agro-economy, they are needed in the interest of the Union as whole in order to preserve EU agriculture, as well as public and
private gardens.’ The mayors are reported to have sent letters to the ministry requesting a less aggressive protocol and received no response. The farmers fear for their crops. They understand the need for the strict eradication measures but are of the opinion that the ministry is acting too hastily in eradicating fields and fields of trees before properly testing for the bacteria: ‘We do not object to those who devastate the fields if it is what needs to be done but we want to analyse all the options before’, a farmer explained.

As it continues in its bid to improve security measures across its coastline, Javea has prohibited parking on calle Guiseppe Verdi - the main access route to cala Ambolo - to ensure access for the emergency services. This measure comes after both the Policia Local and the Red Cross reported access issues to the council – in recent weeks a total of five rescue operations at the cove have been severely impacted by beach-goers parking irresponsibly along the route. As access by land was impacted, most of the rescue operations had to be carried out by sea and another by air. The local executive assessed the area following the reports from the emergency services and has prohibited parking along the entirety of calle Guiseppe Verdi until it meets with calle Igor Stravinsky. Parking will be prohibited at least until the end of the high summer season with the only exception being for residents.

Thief arrested after highspeed chase Benidorm Local Police officers arrested a thief who led them on a high-speed chase through the streets of Rincon de Loix last Sunday. The thief, who stole a car in Altea last Saturday night and robbed a house in the same area the following morning was fleeing through Benidorm last Sunday afternoon when officers caught up with him. As they approached him, the thief rammed two of the officers off their motorbikes, throwing them to the ground before speeding off. He was intercepted again as officers shot out the wheels of the stolen car and arrested him at around 2.00pm. The four officers involved in the chase were treated for various injuries. The culprit – who has a criminal record - was arrested unharmed.

by Rose Holmes The storms of Wednesday night caused chaos across the Marina Alta and even damaged a fairground attraction in Denia port. Luckily, the fairground was closed and nobody was hurt as the winds tore across
the town and the attraction came tumbling down. As for infrastructure, lighting on carretera de Les Marines was out and a lifeguard station was brought down on the beach near Calle Riu Cervol. Two trees fell across the old Ondara road and calle Rio San Miguel, two cars were
struck by lightning and two drains were burst in Denia. Across the Montgo in Javea, the downpour flooded a cottage where four girls were holidaying. They were evacuated by the Local Police and spent the night in emergency shelter arranged by the Red Cross.
Storm claims beach
Denia lost one of its most emblematic beaches in the storms earlier this week. On Wednesday morning, Les Deveses beach had completely disappeared as waves pounded against the walls of the seaside houses. This stretch of coastline is heavily regressed and the storms experienced earlier in the year caused considerable damage to many of the aforementioned houses, some of which were built as long ago as 1928. In the town itself, 78 litres of rain per square metre collected and many main streets were closed, including la Barbacana, Cami del Llavador, Cami de la Bota and l'Assagador de la marjal, crossing with Calle Melva.

by Tahnee Wright THE NATIONAL POLICE arrested a 48year-old man who was carrying 482 kilograms of cocaine in the van he was driving. The man was arrested in the town of Xirvella near Valencia after failing to stop at a police checkpoint at around 1:30am on Tuesday. The driver is reported to have accelerated through the checkpoint situated in one of Xirvella’s main squares, forcing officers to take action. The police gave chase to the van, which was stopped after a three-kilometres. Upon searching the van, officers discovered the 482 kilograms of cocaine, which had been hidden in 22 different bags, some of which were described as ‘wet and covered in sand’. The police said the drug had been divided into rectangular packets, wrapped in plastic and weighing a kilo

482 KILOGRAMS: The cocaine had a street value of around €15 million apiece, adding that the cocaine is of ‘exceptional purity’, with a street value of around €15 million. The detainee was carrying €1,000 euros in cash, which is thought to have been his payment for acting as a courier.
He was arrested on charges of endangering public health and it was later discovered he has previous convictions for similar offences. The investigation continues with authorities not ruling out further arrests.
A 63-year-old woman was found dead in the sea off the Punta Estrella in Teulada-Moraira earlier this week. A group of French tourists saw the body of the woman – who was from Valencia – float past them on Monday night and at first presumed she was alive and swimming. As the body floated past the group a second time, the tourists realised the woman had in fact drowned and called the emergency services. The woman’s body was pulled from the water by helicopter in a collaborated effort by the Policia local, the Guardia Civil and SVS and taken to the port in the Moraira. Sources confirmed the woman had committed suicide after finding a note she had left.
Benidorm hotel stays down two per cent Hotels in Benidorm saw a two per cent drop in occupancy rate in the second half of July in comparison to the same period last year. Figures released by hotel association HOSBEC show the city’s hotels experienced a 90.6 per cent occupancy rate in the last two weeks of July - 2.3 per cent less than the same period last year. The average occupancy rate for the whole of July was 91.2 per cent, 1.5 per cent less than July last year. Despite the decrease in comparison to last year’s figures, 2017 is still the third busiest summer the city has had since 2004. Distribution of the tourism market by nationality consolidates the UK as the first market with 47.4 per cent, while the Spaniards represented 40.3 per cent.

A video is circulating amongst neighbours of Gandia on Facebook showing a young man being beaten by seven others. The incident occurred early last Sunday morning as the nightclubs were closing. The video was taken from a nearby balcony by a resident who heard screams in the street. It shows the victim beaten to the
ground whilst the attackers continue to punch, kick and push him. It shows two people trying to help the victim from afar by throwing glass bottles at the attackers. The victim can be seen covering his head trying to protect himself. The video cuts as the attackers are alerted to police presence – they flee the scene shouting ‘vamos!’

Tourist gored by bull A 37-year-old man from Valencia was gored by a bull on Tuesday night at Calpe’s annual Bous al carrer event. The man passed the safety railing to try to take a photo of the bulls running down the street when one caught him. The bull gored the man’s thigh and threw him against the metal railings. He fell to the ground unconscious. Red Cross medics on hand at the event plugged the wound in the man’s thigh – he had already lost a lot of blood. He was then taken by ambulance to Hospital de Denia-MarinaSalud where he was operated on. The Bous al carrer was suspended.
84 year old hit by car An 84-year-old woman in a wheelchair suffered traumatic brain injury last week after being hit by a car on Benidorm’s Avenida Europa according to the Information and Emergency Coordination Center (CICU). The incident occurred last Thursday morning as a SAMU ambulance arrived at the scene and took the woman to Hospital Marina Baixa in La Villajoyosa.
Local Police were accused by the victims of paying little attention to the attack and the Valencian Observatory against Hate Crimes became involved. However, the judge in Benidorm declared ‘the performance of the Local Police was correct’, ruling out the possibility
of the attack being a hate crime. Tono Abad, Director of the The Valencian Observatory against Hate Crimes expressed his dismay over the judgment: ‘Violently assaulting a person for their sexual orientation, harassing them later on social networks, even threaten-
ing death is a crime of continued hatred and this sentence demonstrates the little interest that the judges and prosecutors have in penalising discriminatory behaviour based on hatred of a whole population and the condescension of some judicial bodies with homophobia.’

Pig plague returns by Rose Holmes Javea thought its problem of the Vietnamese pigs that propagated in the Saladar was solved earlier this year when a British mother and daughter adopted them in Pou de la Font in Benitachell to prevent them from being slaughtered. But the pigs escaped from the fenced lot a short time later and after running
riot in Benitachell, are now back with a vengeance in the Saladar. The neighbours are fearful that the pigs will cause accidents and believe they have now crossed with wild boars and birthed the cerdoli hybrids, a species that inherits the worst of their parents: they are aggressive like wild boars and reproduce with the ease of Vietnamese pigs. Saladar residents say have they
made several complaints to the council but ‘at the moment we have not received any response’ adding ‘we believe it is a serious problem that must be addressed as soon as possible.’ The neighbours have asked that people refrain from feeding the pigs, which appears to be making the problem worse: ‘People come to feed them which causes the area to become increasingly dirty and full of cats.’
Benidorm City Council has announced it will not be forwarding a chain letter received from a terminally ill child with cancer. An association started the chain letter – headed ‘El deseo de un nino con cancer’ (The desire of a child with cancer) – on behalf of the child, hoping to smash a Guinness World Record. But the council highlighted this extract from Guinness’ FAQ page on their website, which states they do not award chain letters or emails: ‘Guinness World Records does not accept any records relating to chain letters, sent by post or e-mail. If you receive a letter or an e-mail, which may promise to publish the names of all those who send it on, please destroy it, it is a hoax. We are sorry if you have been taken in by a chain letter claiming to be legitimate and are now disappointed to learn that it is not.’ The letter had already been sent amongst various entities, including the Provincial Council of Alicante.
Restaurant fire An electronic control panel caught fire in a restaurant in the Portet de Moraira last Friday, forcing the evacuation of all customers and staff. The Local Police and the Guardia Civil arrived at the scene and managed to control the fire. They were followed by firefighters from Denia who extinguished the fire and began investigations to ascertain its cause. Only material damage was caused and nobody was hurt.

THE ALICANTE province has added 78 extra police officers to boost the existing force for the remainder of the summer season. They will be deployed throughout the region and comprise of 12 inspectors and 66 officers who are about to complete their special training periods of 11 and seven months respectively with some on-the-job work experience. Training courses at the National Police School in Avila last for nine months for police officers and two years for inspectors, and when they are out in the field they have the same authority of their senior counterparts. Broken down into areas, the 78 will be deployed to Alicante (8 inspectors and 20 officers), Alcoy (5 officers), Benidorm (2 inspectors and 15 officers),
Denia (2 inspectors and 8 officers), Elche (5 officers) and Orihuela (8 officers). According to statistics, although Spain is still regarded as one of the safest countries in Europe, the National Police is working very hard to maintain this status. To continue to encourage visitors to return time and again, advice on safety and security is being offered in a series of languages through individual consular offices and at information points spread around the city. The recent addition of the Alertcops mobile app – available in almost 100 languages - has also enhanced the support given by the police; a quick notification sent from a phone if someone experiences or witnesses a crime can get attention in a fast and efficient manner.

by Tahnee Wright A 25-year-old man was arrested in Gandia charged with robbery and assaulting police officers after he was caught stealing an Iberian ham from a local supermarket. The incident occurred at 11.00pm when the suspect was caught stealing the ham – worth €159 – by at supervisor at the supermarket. Staff at the supermarket detained the man until the police arrived. As police officers attempted to deal with the suspect, he attacked them and threatened to kill them. The man was arrested and
was trying to self-harm, saying he would blame the injuries on the police. In the police car, the suspect continued to struggle, again lashing out at officers and trying to vandalise the vehicle. The man was taken to a health centre where he refused to collaborate and threatened to attack health centre staff. Officers then took the suspect to hospital where he again refused to collaborate – he was finally sedated. One of the officers required medical attention for a deep cut across his eyebrow caused by the man.

Benissa recently began its campaign to educate residents on how to prevent tiger mosquito infestations. Tiger mosquitos have become a significant pest in many communities because they closely associate with humans (rather than living in wetlands) and typically fly and feed in the daytime as well as at dusk and dawn. Tiger mosquitos can transmit many
viral pathogens, including the yellow fever virus, dengue fever, and Chikungunya fever, as well as several filarial nematodes such as Dirofilaria immitis. They are capable of hosting the Zika virus and considered a potential vector for Zika transmission among humans. The town council has distributed 4,000 booklets across the municipality with guidelines on how to prevent, control and
eliminate tiger mosquito infestations. The booklets are written in English, German, Spanish and Valencian and have been distributed in the busiest areas of the town – they are also available in the town centre and along the coast. As far as prevention is concerned, Benissa urged residents to avoid leaving open water containers where the mosquitos will breed.

Denia and the Valencian Tourism Agency have collaborated to organise the first D*NA gastronomy festival from September 30 to October 1. The festival aims to bring together prestigious chefs and experts to explore today’s Mediterranean gastronomy and is just one of the events to be organised since the tourism agency granted the town €190,000 in support of the project ‘Denia, Creative City of Gastronomy’ organised by UNESCO. The event was presented at the CdT of Valencia by Denia Mayor and Councillor of Tourism, Vicent Grimalt, as well as Regional Secretary of Tourism Francesc Colomer and three Michelin stars, Quique Dacosta. Dacosta will be hosting the festival alongside Joan Roca (El Celler de Can Roca), Angel Leon (Aponiente), Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz) and Jordi Cruz (AbaC). The event will be held on the Paseo de
la Marineta Casiana with 300 metres of stalls offering traditional dishes, along with avant-garde creations, regional products and local handicrafts. Two large stages will host different live cooking sessions in which the hosting chefs will explore how tradition and innovation work together in today's Mediterranean gastronomy. The gastronomy industry is one of Denia’s main economic drivers, with more than 500 enterprises generating 2,500 direct jobs. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network is currently formed by 116 Members from 54 countries covering seven creative fields: Crafts & Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Music and Media Arts. In its promotion of Denia on its website, it describes the town as ‘a Mediterranean port city with an ample space for traditional fishing, a sector which contributes about €15 million in sales annually to the local economy’. The festival promises fun for all the family, with workshops for all ages.

Four times over the limit
A man from Teulada-Moraira was arrested for driving four times over the drink drive limit. The driver was caught last week after he crashed his car into the barriers on the road from Teulada to Moraira, close to Font Santa. He had been driving with his six-year-old son in the car. Local Police officers attended the scene where luckily and somewhat shockingly, nobody was hurt.

New lifeboat
Benidorm has reinforced its search and rescue service with the incorporation of a new lifeboat. Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez and Councillor Lorenzo Martinez presented the 7.3 metre boat on Monday, Perez explaining that ‘because of its ability, the boat can facilitate rescue operations of more than one person’ and that the 176 HP engine will ‘reduce response times.’ He also stressed that, unlike the boats used to date, the new lifeboat is rigged with lighting to carry out rescue operations at night. The lifeboat will be operational throughout the year.

JAVEA Town Council and the Diputacion of Alicante have collaborated to offer foreign residents in Javea free Spanish courses. Two courses will run throughout September – one for those at beginner level and another for those at intermediate level. She encouraged everybody to take part in the blood donation marathon, calling giving blood ‘a small action which can save a lot of lives’.

After its resounding success over the past two years, Teulada-Moraira will hold its third ‘blood donation marathon' next weekend. The objective of the annual initiative is to encourage both residents and visitors alike to get involved in giving blood. The event will take place at the SIT Teulada Town Hall on Friday August 18 from 5.00pm – 9.00pm and Saturday August 19 from 9.30am – 1.30pm. Construction of the new bus station in Denia has now begun and works will be complete by February 2018. The new bus station - located on a 2,870-square metre municipal plot just off Calle Marques de Campo – will replace the current one on Plaza Archiduque Carlos. Once excavation work has taken place on the plot (which currently serves as a parking facility), two areas will be created – one for bus traffic and parking and another for station users, with eight platforms, a ticket office, toilets and a waiting area. The works, costing €257,398.42, are being financed by the Plan de Inversion Productiva (Productive Investment Plan). Once works are completed and the new station is in operation, Plaza Archiduque Carlos will become a pedestrian plaza and traffic will be redirected.

by Fabio Delucci A 7.0-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck a remote, mountainous part of China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, killing 19 people, including eight tourists, and injuring 247, the provincial government and official media said on Wednesday. The quake hit a sparsely populated area 200 km northwest of the city of Guangyuan late on Tuesday at a depth of 10 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was also close to the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve, a tourist destination. Sichuan is frequently struck by tremors. A huge quake there in May 2008 killed almost 70,000 people. The Sichuan government said rescuers were gradually evacuating tourists and residents who had been cut off by landslides. It added that 19 people had been killed, but most of those injured were not seriously hurt. The dead included eight tourists, two residents and nine whose identities have yet to be confirmed at the time of printing.

Pictures on state-run social media sites showed some damage in Jiuzhaigou, with tiles having fallen off buildings and people gathering outdoors. State television said electricity had
largely been restored to affected areas and the military was also sending rescuers. The Sichuan government said on one of its official social media sites that more than 38,000 tourists were visiting Jiuzhaigou.
Man arrested after ramming car into soldiers in Paris French police shot and arrested a man on Wednesday suspected of deliberately ramming his car into a group of soldiers in a Parisian suburb hours earlier, injuring six of them in what the government called a deliberate attack. Armed police from elite units tracked the fugitive for five hours after the attack before cornering him on a motorway in northern France and shooting him several times. The suspect was unarmed when he was trapped by police some 260 km north of Paris where he had attacked the soldiers in the affluent suburb of Levallois-Perret, a judicial source said. The man appeared to have lain in wait for the soldiers in a pedestrian zone near their base in Levallois-Perret on the northwestern edge of the capital where France's domestic counter-terrorism agency is based. He accelerated his BMW car into the troops, who were starting their patrol, when they were a few metres away, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, before speeding off and sparking a huge manhunt. ‘This was a deliberate act, not an accident,’ Collomb told reporters outside the hospital where the three more seriously injured victims were being treated. He said a terrorism investigation had been launched. The French press named the suspect as 37-year-old Hamou B., originally from Satrouville west of Paris and said that searches had been carried out at his home and those of his associates. Levallois-Perret is about 5 km (3 miles) from city centre landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Elysee Presidential Palace.

by Tahnee Wright The Balearic Islands ruled on Tuesday that they will penalise landlords for illegally renting apartments to tourists with fines of up to €40,000 euros, amid a backlash against the effects of mass tourism across the country. The move is an escalation in efforts to crack down on home-sharing sites such as Airbnb by city councils or local authorities in Spain, as concern mounts over the sideeffects of their increasing popularity. Airbnb, much like ride-hailing firm Uber, is facing a crackdown from legislators worldwide triggered in part by lobbying from the
hotel industry which sees the rental service as unfair competition. In the Balearic Islands, which drew more foreign visitors than any other region in Spain this June, rental costs have jumped and there are fears of a housing shortage for residents. Rental prices in Palma de Mallorca, the Mediterranean archipelago's biggest city, have risen 40 per cent in the last five years, according to property platform Mitula. The island of Ibiza has the biggest density of Airbnb rentals, with a tourist apartment for every 30 residents, data from analytics firm Airdna showed. Renting apartments without a licence was banned in the region in 2012 under a
previous administration but enforcement was largely nonexistent, according to the Balearic government. The new legislation establishes fines of between €20,000 and €40,000 for those offering short rentals without a license to tourists. Local residents will be able to report suspected illegal flats though a website, and online platforms such as Airbnb and Homeaway could also face fines of up to €400,000 if they are found to advertise rentals without a license number. The Balearics' four islands will each have a year to decide if and where they will allow licensed tourist rentals to continue.
Spanish police detained a suspect sought by an Interpol international arrest warrant through a request made by Turkey, reports said Tuesday. According to reports, 59-year-old Hamza Yalcın, who is accused of terror charges, was detained by the police in Barcelona. Yalcın has reportedly been living in Sweden for the past 30 years and was in Spain for a weekend getaway. He was detained Thursday as he was heading to London through passport control at Barcelona–El Prat Airport. Reports said that he was arrested based on an Interpol warrant issued by Turkey. Yalcın is accused of plotting terrorist acts at Odak Dergisi magazine. He is a dual citizen of Turkey and Sweden and is expected to be extradited to Turkey.
Going to vote on gay marriage Australia could legalise same-sex marriage by as early as the end of this year, after the government announced an attempt to hold a national vote on the issue. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday he would ‘give all Australians a say’ on whether same-sex marriage should be legal. "I'll be voting yes, as will my wife, I'm very open about that but the Australian people are never wrong when they vote, whether it's for governments or on matters like this, their vote will be respected," Turnbull said. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since July 3, 2005. Approximately 4,500 same-sex couples married in Spain during the first year of the law. In England and Wales, same-sex marriage was legalised on March 13, 2014 and the first same-sex marriages took place on March 29, 2014.

tional investigative measures have so far not led to the locations of the suspects. They are believed to be hiding in a different country to where the crime was committed, and the members of ENFAST are working closely together to make sure these fugitives do not evade justice. Ferguson is sought in connection with the murder of Thomas Cameron on 28th June 2007 at the Auchinairn Tavern, Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow. He is described as between 5ft and 5ft 2 tall. He has green/blue eyes and short, balding brown/grey hair.

by Rose Holmes Chronic overcrowding in some of Spain's beloved tourism hotspots such as Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca is fuelling an angry backlash, from polite protest to ‘Go Home’ graffiti and even physical intimidation. Residents are complaining that a sharp rise in tourism is making life intolerable. In Barcelona, where anger has been brewing for some time, some graffiti has turned menacing. One slogan, featuring a black silhouette with a red target on its head, reads: ‘Why call it tourist season if we can't shoot them?’
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy intervened this week after some anti-tourist anger turned physical. A video emerged of masked activists setting off flares outside a restaurant full of tourists on the island of Palma de Mallorca. They then entered the restaurant and threw confetti at frightened diners. Rajoy described the activists as ‘extremists going against common sense’. Tourism makes up 12 per cent of Spain's economy. Similar videos were released this week under the slogan ‘tourism kills neighbourhoods’. In one, several hooded individuals stop a tourist bus in Barcelona, slashing the
tyres and spray-painting the windscreen. Tourism to southern Europe has surged over the past two years, partly because visitors are choosing the region over other Mediterranean destinations where security fears are a concern, such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Visitors to Spain jumped 12 per cent in the first half of 2017 to 36.4 million. Barcelona draws at least 11 million visitors a year and is planning a new tax that will hit cruise ships: 65 cents for each visitor staying less than 12 hours. About 750 cruise ships docked at Barcelona last year.
Prince Henrik of Denmark announced recently that he does not wish to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, saying he is unhappy he was never acknowledged as her equal. Henrik, 83, who married Queen Margrethe in 1967, was later named the Queen's Prince Consort, but has repeatedly said he would have liked to be named King Consort. The Royal Danish House's director of communications told Reuters: ‘For the Prince, the decision not to buried beside the Queen is the natural consequence of not having been treated equally to his spouse - by not having the title and role he has desired,’ she added. Prince Henrik retired last year and renounced his title of Prince Consort. Since then he has participated in very few official duties and instead spent much of his time at his private vineyard in France, although he is still married to the queen and they officially live together.

Pack your bags Smurfs kicked out of their Andalusian village. by Fabio Delucci Juzcar, a small village in the province of Malaga once known as one of the ‘White Towns of Andalusia’, shot to fame in 2011 when buildings in the town (including the church and gravestones) were painted smurf-blue by Sony Pictures to celebrate the premiere of the Smurfs movie in Spain. Sony offered to repaint the village – home to only 240 inhabitants - white later that year but residents voted to leave the buildings painted blue, as an estimated 80,000 tourists visited ‘Smurf village’ in the six months following the repainting - the town normally had seen 300 tourists per year. Entrepreneuring locals soon realised they could further cash in on their blue village -
adorning walls with paintings of Smurfs, cramming stalls with Smurf souvenirs and some locals even dressing up as Smurf characters to pose for photos. ‘Smurf village’ is reported to have attracted 50,000 tourists a year over the past six years. But a recent dispute between the town hall and the estate of the Smurf creator, Belgian comics artist Pierre Culliford whose pen name was Peyo, resulted in the estate demanding 12 per cent in royalties on all Smurfrelated income. The town hall couldn’t reach an agreement with the estate so, from August 15, there will be no more references to the small blue figures. However, the houses will remain painted blue.

After realising a mistake had been made, Cardiff’s City Arms offered the clergymen a round of free drinks to apologise, the Archdiocese of Cardiff said in a blog post on Tuesday. Arriving at the pub last Saturday to celebrate the ordination of Father Peter McLaren, the priests were told by a bartender that the City Arms did not serve large groups in fancy dress. The archdiocese said they had started to leave when another staff member said he believed they were real priests and invited them back in for a free drink. ‘We’d like to thank The City Arms for being good sports through all of this and their kind gesture to our seminarians,’ the blog post said. It said the priests had initially thought the bartender was joking when he mistook them for a stag party.

L. Mencken. No thanks to media we are very much in the dark as to what happens even in our own backyard. There is little awareness that Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban enjoys a popularity rating that far eludes his Western counterparts. In Britain, Germany, France, and different EU states, the electorate elect the lesser of two evils. French President Emmanuelle Macron’s election was spun as a landslide. Yet, polls suggest that as few as one in five French electors support their head of state. This is not democracy. In Sweden, 72.9 per cent of the electorate plan to vote for parties other than the ruling Social Democrats. In Norway 68 per cent intend to vote against the current Labour regime. To avoid electoral defeat unpopular regimes form coalitions. Britain’s premier Theresa May was forced to form a coalition with 10 MPs of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). This is not democracy either. Westerners believe their older electoral systems superior to former Soviet Bloc nations. Not true: Countries like Slovakia, Poland, and Czech Republic
and in particular Hungary set an example in democracy that shames western governments. Hungary’s Fidesz Party, headed by Victor Orban, enjoys a level of support far beyond the dreams of Chancellor Merkel, President Macron and UK premier Theresa May. Seven years since elected Fidesz is more popular than ever. The right-nationalist party polled in excess of 60 per cent of votes cast during recent elections. Unlike their western peers Hungary’s parliamentarians can truthfully say they are elected because they are good at their job. Fidesz popularity has been achieved by doing something quite revolutionary to western ears. Their parliamentarians actually listen to their electorate, government policies reflect the wishes of Hungarians. There are 25 per cent more Hungarians in work today than there were in 2010. The government recovered and revitalised industries, public utilities and natural resources that had been auctioned off to foreign interests by corrupt predecessors. Hungarians fear their being dependent upon the whims of outside interests. Foreign influence has been eliminated in banking, media, and state and education sectors. Non-European immigrants are kept out whilst ethnic Hungarians are presented with an eyewatering choice of inducements to marry and raise large families.
Hungarian PM, Czech and Polish parliamentarians respond to EU threats and sanctions with the two-fingered salute. So they should; 98 per cent Hungarians reject Brussels impudent immigrant quotas. Irony is that there is far greater division of wealth, happiness and democracy in the EU than there was when Europe was separated by anti-tank ditches, razor wire, watchtowers and border checkpoints. How long before Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia erect them again to keep the westerners out.

When I read of the goings on in some UK schools today; with pupil-on- teacher violence, savage bullying and a total disrespect for authority, it horrifies me. Sure in my day we may have transported the art master’s cycle from the bike sheds to the roof on
one occasion, and sent an explicit Valentine’s card to the P.E. master’s house – he was distinctly unhappy about that, but not as unhappy as his wife who happened to open it – but these were just relatively harmless pranks compared to the stuff we hear about today. And remember, those were the days when limited corporal punishment was acceptable in schools, and the cane was a useful and effective deterrent administered in our case, by the deputy head. The liberal minded will advocate that corporal punishment was a bad thing and that violence only begets violence. But having been schooled during the 50’s and early part of the 60’s, and seen the results, I say nonsense. Individual masters were also permitted to mete out their own punishment as and when required and one such was Mr TreweekDew an English
teacher, who kept ‘Rudolph’ hanging from a chain on the blackboard. ‘Dewey’ was a bear-like man, who paced the school corridors menacingly. With his military style moustache, and tweed jacket that looked as if the coat hanger had been left in, he was a formidable figure. ‘Rudolph’ was a black plimsoll and was a constant visible reminder to pay very close attention to the pearls of wisdom imparted to us. We often speculated why the shoe was called Rudolph, and the nearest we came to an answer was that Rudolph tended to leave you with a very red extremity. These realities however held no dread for us and we looked upon them as natural and just, and all part of a happy and balanced school life. As for the teachers themselves, much of it was implied rather than applied, sometimes with tongue in cheek and often with humour. We knew just how far to take things, and if we exceeded the limits, we accepted the consequences - and all with the full approval of our parents. That being said, I have to reluctantly go along with the PC brigade who dictate that children today should never be physically punished either in school or by their parents. No really I do. I mean, some of those little darlings carry knives!

Masculine and feminine Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

This week I promised we’d go on to something new. We’re going to spend a bit of time looking at nouns, followed later on by adjectives, before we return to the construction of complete sentences using verbs. Before we do that though, I always think it’s a good idea to summarise where we’re up to, so here are the things we have covered in the first seven lessons of this series. First of all we have learnt some thirty verbs in their infinitive, or basic form. That is the form that we translate as “to ….” and which in Spanish ends in either – ar, -er or –ir. Then we have seen that certain verb forms related to “I” can go in front of these to make a basic sentence structure. Quiero (I want); puedo (I can); necesito (I need); voy a (I’m going to); me gusta (I like); prefiero (I prefer) and tengo que (I have to). We have also looked at three examples where changing these forms slightly gives us a “you” sentence – vas a (you are going to); quieres (you want); tienes que (you have to). In addition we have learnt the link words pero, (but) and para (in order to), which allow us to extend our sentences to make them more complete and meaningful. Now to today’s business– nouns. The word “noun” simply means the name of something, so it refers to
people and things like “man” and “table” and also ideas and feelings like “democracy” and “happiness”. We also have what we call “proper nouns” which are specific names like “Mary” or “England”. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter in English and Spanish: “María”, “Inglaterra”. The way the English language is structured it is not important at all whether a noun refers to a male or a female. We simply have different words (man, woman, stallion, mare etc.) whilst everything else is simply a neutral object (table, car, chair, paper). In Spanish every noun is considered to be either masculine or feminine, so just as hombre (man) and mujer (woman) are masculine and feminine, so words for objects are too: mesa (table – feminine); coche (car – masculine); silla (chair – feminine); papel (paper – masculine). Now it is very important for us to realise that the concept of “masculine” and “feminine” does not relate to the thing itself but to the word. In other words we shouldn’t be thinking about why a table is considered feminine and a car is considered masculine, we simply need to accept that the word mesa is a feminine word and coche is a masculine word. To illustrate this point, here are some examples: vestido (dress – masculine), camisa (shirt – feminine), bolsa (general word for “bag” - feminine), bolso (handbag – masculine). Even more interesting persona (person – feminine) and víctima (victim – feminine); in all these examples and many more the gender of the word bears no relation to the gender identification of the ob-
ject or person. So, two questions need answering before we continue talking about this matter next week. Firstly, how do we know when a word is masculine or feminine? and secondly, why is it important? In answer to the first question, it is very common for masculine words to end in the letter “o” and feminine words to end in the letter “a”, although this is not always the case. There are some exceptions that are the other way round, and also many words that end in different letters. However, it is quite a good indicator to start with. Then there are certain characteristic endings. Two of the most common examples are words that end in –dad and –ción which are always feminine. Now the second question – Why is it important? To be honest at the early stages of language learning, when you only know a few words and are getting simple messages across to people (like how many beers you want), then it really doesn’t matter very much at all. However, as you progress with the language you start to discover that this masculine/ feminine divide runs right through the language and affects a lot of other words in a sentence. So to learn to speak correct Spanish we have to get to grips with the idea.

Sale and purchase of houses in Spain rose sharply in June, figures from the statistical office INE revealed on Tuesday. House transactions in urban areas grew 19.3 per cent year-on-year in June, but fell 1.4 per cent from the previous month. The number of units transacted were 44,135. Overall property transactions rose 9.7 per cent from a year ago to 166,830 units. Of the total property purchases in June 86.8 per cent were urban properties and within that 57.8 per cent were housing sales. Rural property transfers grew 5.9 per cent.

Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest lender, is putting its business with private customers in Spain up for sale as it continues to consolidate its activities, according to financial sources. Deutsche Bank has around 700,000 clients in Spain, mostly private customers. The sale, estimated to bring somewhere between €550 million and €750 million involves 230 branches with 2,600 employees and assets of €15 billion. The German bank’s activities in Spain are focused on private customer business and asset management. Deutsche’s corporate business and investment banking in Spain, as well as its business in Portugal, are not affected by the sale.

THE SEAFRONT in Moraira recently played host to the second concert in the series of free summer shows produced by the TeuladaMoraira Lions Club, which raised over €1,500 for the local health centre. The evening began as Lion President Brian Clarke welcomed everyone and explained that the proceeds of the concert were going to help fund the purchase of an Eco Grafo machine for the local health centre in Moraira. John the Fiddler who was followed by Mr Pink. ‘Mr Pink, headed by ‘Rafa’ on lead guitar and vocals, thrilled the crowd for the next 75 minutes with some great songs of which there was something to please everyone. With Rafa’s amazing guitar flair and dexterity and Christian’s keyboard talents, supplemented by a great rhythm section on drums and bass, it proved a faultless performance and left the crowd begging for more’ said Lion Peter Johnson.
A total of €1572.90 was raised and the Lions express their greatest thanks both to the audience for their generosity and Hamiltons of London for their sponsorship. The next concert will take place next Sunday August 20 from 7.30pm with Carolina Serrato with her Lady Gaga/ Michael Jackson tribute show supported by Timewarp Duo. Cruising to Cullera with Free Spirits HD Free Spirits HD is an English-speaking Harley Davidson enthusiast group of over 50 members based across the Marina Alta. The male and female group - made up of riders and pillions – enjoy a ride out at least every other weekend throughout the year, winding the forgotten country corners and the cool coastal routes. The routes are well planned, with coffee and lunch stops on the way. Last Sunday’s ride saw 12 members of the group meet in Pedreguer as Director and Road Captain Barry Haylor ran through the day’s 95kilometre route up to Cullera and back to Oliva for lunch. Joining the group on Sunday was Daniel Crespi of
HD Dream Trips in Moraira. Established earlier this year, HD Dream Trips offers a range of Harleys to hire including the Street 750, the Sportster 1200, the Dyna Super Glide and the Heritage Softail along with a Vespa P200 for good measure. Free Spirits HD in its current form was re-launched in July 2017 and the group and its rides are administered by a small committee. Members must own a Harley Davidson. The group enjoy social events throughout the year including a summer BBQ, a Santa Run in December and a Christmas Dinner and Dance. A charity fundraiser held last week by Giving4Giving and Sell Your Stuff Spain raised €1,000 to be split between four Marina Baixa charities. Over the years, Giving4Giving has helped Anemona and the AECC and the decision was made to donate to these charities again. Giving4Giving Founder Gary presented Maria of Anemona with the money last Saturday and Maria will distribute the funds. Gary expresses his greatest thanks to Claudine and Katie from Sell Your Stuff Spain for all their help and support. Giving4Giving has now raised over €82,000 for local charities and those who need it most - hosting numerous

U3A Vall del Pop summer update THE U3A (University of the Third Age)Vall del Pop group, a self-help organisation for people no longer in full-time employment, covers the many villages and communities in the Jalon and Orba valleys, with some members travelling from Els Poblets, Javea and Pego. The group provides an opportunity for English speaking expatriates to meet, share experiences, learn new skills, take part in trips and most importantly to make new friends. General Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Centre Polivalent in Murla, where the committee report on the position of the group, with respect to membership, accounts, group activities, trips and events, etc. These meeting culminate with a short talk from selected speakers on topics of interest, which in the last session included Spanish Taxes and Brexit, Marine Turtle Conservation and BOAC Experiences. Kenny, I recently took some photos and above my husband’s head there are many circles of light. Looking at the scene through my camera there is nothing, but after the photo is taken there are several discs hovering above him. Is something bad going to happen? Penny H-S.
I certainly hope not Penny! Such orbs are transmissions of energy from the Spirit World. I visited the Viking Museum in Oslo and took many photos of the Ships on display. One Ship had two big orbs and four smaller ones at the back of the craft. A custodian told me that this was a funeral ship and that the bodies of two adults and four children were discovered there. Is it possible that your husband has had a recent bereavement? Such an energy force can be the silent message that Spirit send to just say that all is well and that they are safe. Otherwise Spirit can be attracted to somebody and the orbs are a transference of energy to the Earth plane, best picked up by photographic equipment. Thanks for sharing.

Some habits are harder to bite
Check those moles ON AVERAGE, men go to their GP half as often as women. It's important to be aware of changes to your health, and to see your GP immediately if you notice something's not right. This week, we look at moles. Some moles are present at birth, although most develop during the first 30 years of life. People with fair skin often have more moles than people with darker skin and you are more likely to develop lots of moles, or a certain type of mole, if they are common in your family. Where you were brought up may also make a difference; for example, if you were born in a hot country or have spent many years living in the sun, you may have a lot of small moles. Most moles are completely harmless. However, they may be unsightly and affect your confidence. Moles can also be a nuisance, especially if they regularly catch on your clothing or you cut them while shaving. See your GP if a mole looks unusual or becomes itchy. It can then be checked and removed surgically if needed, although it can be an expensive process. To minimise the risk of skin cancer, always try to avoid exposure to the sun between 11am and 3pm. Remember ‘slip, slap, slop’ and use a cream with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Finally, you should check your skin every few months for any new moles that develop (particularly after your teenage years, when new moles become less common) or any changes to existing moles; remember, a mole can change in weeks or months.

RESEARCH suggests that 30 per cent of children, 45 per cent of teenagers, 25 per cent of young adults, and five per cent of older adults bite their nails, with the aesthetic consequences being the most obvious. For some people, the social stigma and embarrassment as to the look of their nails causes them to become depressed, isolated, or avoid activities they would otherwise enjoy. Beyond this, however, are there other health reasons to worry if you regularly bite your nails? Disease-Causing Bacteria Your nails are an ideal location for
bacteria to thrive, and that includes potentially pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli (which would love to call the underside of your nail tips home). As you bite your nails, those bacteria easily transfer into your mouth and the rest of your body, where they may lead to infections. Your fingernails may actually be twice as dirty as your fingers, considering they're difficult to keep clean, making this a prime point of transfer for infectious organisms. Nail Infections Nail biters are susceptible to paronychia, a skin infection that
occurs around your nails. As you chew your nails, bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms can enter through tiny tears or abrasions, leading to swelling, redness, and pus around your nail. Dental Problems Nail biting can interfere with proper dental occlusion, or the manner in which your upper and lower teeth come together when you close your mouth. Your teeth may shift out of their proper position, become misshapen, wear down prematurely, and become weakened if you bite your nails over time.
Documentary likens one egg to five cigarettes A new documentary produced by Joaquin Phoenix is coming under fire from doctors and scientists over its bold claims about the adverse effects of consuming eggs and meat. A recent arrival on Netflix, What the Health asserts that eating one egg per day is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes and consuming a single portion of processed meat increases the risk of diabetes by 51 per cent. These facts are listed on the documentary’s homepage, along with links to sources from medical
journals but a handful of venerable doctors and scientists recently spoke out to the British press, saying that these sources can’t be trusted. Alexandra Freeman, the executive director of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, told the Times UK that the statistic about eggs is from ‘an extremely controversial paper,’ while a cancer researcher named Alice Howarth remarks: ‘What the Health overwhelms the viewer with scaremongering ‘facts’ which do not hold up to scientific investigation.’
As for the meat-diabetes connection, that statistic comes from one journal that cited the relative risk of increase, not the absolute risk. Freeman notes: ‘An ‘increase’ can be

A quarter (26 per cent) of the 4,008 adults quizzed said they take more photos of their pets than their own children and 42 per cent take more pictures of their pets than their partners. The study found that almost half (49 per cent) of those surveyed say they prefer animals to people. When asked why, the top three reasons were because their pets are like a faithful friend, are more reliable than people and they make their owners feel more cheerful. Just under a fifth (17 per cent) of dogs and cats in the UK now have a dedicated presence on social media, with 12 per cent of pets on Facebook, 5 per cent on Instagram, 5 per cent on Twitter and 3 per cent on Snapchat. PEUGEOT has triumphed again on the Silk Way Rally, which took place from Russia to China over two weeks, having also claimed the event last year with Cyril Despres. The French brand set off from the start in Moscow with three cars:

Not only that, but Peterhansel performed a vital role as ‘guardian angel’ over Despres in the closing stages of the rally, helping his colleague to maintain his leadership by being on hand to assist in the event of any issues. This proved to be invaluable, with Despres able to drive securely in the knowledge that his
team mate was on hand. “The rally did not end the way we wanted it to for myself and Daniel, but I’m very happy for the whole Peugeot team and especially Cyril and David for this important victory,” said Peterhansel. “It was also a great feeling to lead the event with a good margin during the first week, and I think the Maxi was a key factor in helping to achieve this, although it was more suited to certain stages than others. Now we will continue the development work, using all the important lessons we have learned from Silk Way, in preparation for the Dakar.”
