Worrying drought conditions for Alicante and Murcia by Glenn Scott THE nEvEr ending drought conditions across the country as a whole has resulted in a 50% capacity in 19 Spanish rivers. Three of them, the Duero, Segura and Júcar are especially low and causing concern. Spain has seen worst drought levels since the turn of the century – 2012 has been the highest to date – but according to Environment Minister Isabel Tejerina there are some individual rivers that are running drier than they’ve ever been. The Segura, which wends its way through the Murcia and into the south of the province of Alicante – it meets the sea at Guardamar – is only 23.43% full. Close behind is the Júcar that runs through valencia and stands at 33.59%; lower than last year at this time when emergency levels were reported. The biggest drop is in the river Duero, through Castilla y León and into Portugal – where it becomes the river Douro – where the amount of water has plummeted from 85.28% a year ago to only 44.12% today. Santa Pola boat blast by Glenn Scott GUARDIA CIVIL officers are continuing to investigate the cause of a blast that occurred on a boat in the port of Santa Pola. There were eight people on board at the time. The explosion that took place late on Sunday afternoon around 5.0pm, resulted in five people being injured – two seriously. These included four adults between the ages of 29 and 47 and a three-year old boy that are all members of the Santa Pola Yacht Club and come from Elche. All five were transferred to the Alicante General Hospital where the oldest and youngest of the victims were in a more serious condition; it’s understood the 47-year-old woman has burns to 60% of her body while the boy has a badly burned arm. Initial investigations suggest that the blast was caused due to a build up of gas
which was ignited with serious consequences when the boat was started up. Witnesses reported that there was only a loud explosion that wasn’t followed by any smoke or fire and that the injuries were caused by the blast itself.
At around the same time about 100kms along the coast, there was another explosion on a boat moored in the Alicante port of Javea. A man and a woman suffered first and second degree burns in that blast.

EvEn though Spain is by tradition a dry country, the Mediterranean coast can usually rely on the annual four or five day gota frías when monsoon conditions sweep through in autumn or spring and top up rivers and reservoirs. These have been few and far between in recent years and are believed to be a result of global warming and the movement north of the weather systems. the minister has assured people that tap water is “guaranteed” for everyone in the country but warns that for the future this will always depend on the amount of rainfall. However, in the last two years, supplies of tap water have been cut off in some towns in Spain for several hours a day, and in some northern parts of the Alicante province, residents had no water for up to 12 hours a day, particularly those whose population increases in summer with tourists and part-time residents.

Murcia promise no more pets to be put down by Glenn Scott FROM the year 2020, the city of Murcia is looking to have a “zero sacrifice” policy for any pets they have in their care. the city is committed to ensuring the welfare and protection of the pets in the region and wants to stop the practise of putting down any animals that are unable to be found a loving home. Alongside this initiative, they will be promoting a campaign to encourage more people to adopt the many cats and dogs in their care and currently homed at the Zoonosis Centre in Murcia. the spokesperson for the council, Rebeca Perez, emphasised that all the pets released into homes from Zoonosis are fully vaccinated, sterilised or neutered, de-wormed and electronically tagged. the new proposals also foresee a limit on the number of domestic animals being allowed in the home. At present, each person can have a maximum of three dogs or cats in town properties and five in the rural ones. Likewise, practices such as permanently keeping pets on balconies and terraces, using animals for illegal shows and fights or any activity that is considered to involve cruelty or ill-treatment shall be prohibited. this also includes any operations on the animal purely for aesthetic purposes. these proposals have been brought about following a commission report put together in collaboration with all the political parties in Murcia, animal protection associations, the Murcia Region Association, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Murcia.
Population on the rise again ACCORDING tO the latest set of data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the population of Spain has increased for the first time in six years. As at January 1 2017, the total number on the national census came to exactly 46,528,966 – a rise of 88,867 since January 1 2016 and the first increase since the beginning of 2011. Spanish nationals rose in number by 81,975 between the start and end of 2016, through a combination of returning expats and newborn babies, whilst the foreigner headcount went up by 6,892. As at the start of 2017, a total of 42.1 million residents in Spain were Spanish nationals and 4.4 million were immigrants.
Morning snackers arrested
A GROUP of four Spanish tourists could be facing a jail term after breaking into a cafe in Thailand. They were charged with stealing bread and Coca-Cola from the unit in Chiang Mai in the early hours of the morning around 4.00am. The group, all in their early 20s, were arrested at their hostel hours later and said to be ‘quite drunk’ at the time.

Almoradí road killers found
by Glenn Scott LOCAL POLICE in Rojales have arrested two men – aged 29 and 33 – as the alleged perpetrators of a hit and run of a motorcyclist as he left Almoradí. The 78-year old victim came from the nearby town of Dolores. The incident happened earlier in the month and the arrests were made after a major investigation that included police officers from five local
municipalities and a series of witness statements. In the hours after the crime, local police from Rojales toured the area looking for the car that was involved after witnesses gave a description of the vehicle involved. Eventually it was found parked next to the Rojales Health Centre, close to the police headquarters and the Guardia Civil were informed for the next stage of the investigation.
Sleeping burglars caught
The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, congratulated the Local Police for the professionalism of the officers in helping solve the case so quickly and that it’s proof once again than collaboration between police and other organisations is vital to continue with the security of our citizens after such events". The arrested duo have been charged with homicide and leaving the scene of the crime without attending to the victim.
A GROUP of four people have been arrested and two others are under investigation in connection with a series of burglaries. It’s believed that the same organised gang have been responsible for at least 40 robberies carried out in Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa whilst their victims were sleeping. Authorities first suspected the same group was responsible following a series of reported crimes during 2016 when the vast majority of the occurred when the victims were inside their properties; in some cases, the owners came home and caught the burglars in the act. According to the Guardia Civil in Pilar de la Horadada, those arrested are two Algerians and two Moroccans aged between 25 and 43; those under investigation are a 35-year-old Moroccan and a 44-year-old Spaniard. It’s believed that the total amount of the goods and cash stolen by this gang is €150,000 made up of mobile phones, tablets, jewellery, computers and cash. In some of the robberies they even stole cars parked near the property after stealing the keys. Stolen credit cards were used to make numerous online purchases and many of the newest generation of mobile phones were sold on market stalls. Apart from those already detained in custody, the police are investigating others that may be involved in this network and are focusing on those that might be receiving the stolen goods. The Guardia Civil are paying special attention to data contained on an Apple phone device that could lead them to other gang members.

Balearic Islands vote for bloodless bullfights
The Balearic islands voted on Monday to pass a law that forbids both the death of the bull or any bloodshed in bullfights. A trAditionAl bullfight sees six bulls killed in a bullring by being stabbed by a matador's sword through the back, after the animals have previously been weakened in a ritual which sees them first stabbed in the shoulders by a picador's lance and then to have six short spears (‘bandelleras’) stuck into their back. the new law forbids the bull's death in the bullring, as well as any physical or psychological damage, forbidding the use of ‘bandelleras, lances, knives or swords,’ while limiting the time a bull is in the ring to a maximum of ten minutes after which ‘it will be returned to the corral.’ Under the Balearics new law, the bull will be submitted for a medical check-up after the fight and then returned to the ranch from where it was raised. the new law was passed with the approval of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSoE), left wing party Podemos and regional party Mes Mallorca, but was opposed by the right-wing People's Party and centreright formation Ciudadanos. the minimum age for attending a bullfight was also raised from 16 to 18 under the new law. Bullfighting has already been banned completely in the Catalan region in northeast Spain and in the Canary islands and is generally seen as losing popularity among the younger generation of Spaniards. nevertheless, it is still the subject of bitter debate among those who view it as a Spanish cultural tradition and those who consider it a cruel aberration which has no place in a modern nation.

Renfe train strike
ANY plANs to travel by train today (Friday) using the services of RENFE will be best put on hold for another time. The spanish train company has cancelled 274 services between midnight and 11.00pm due to the strike called by members of the OGT trade union. However, there will be trains running on all routes but with severe disruptions and delays especially with the usual weekend getaways. It’s planned to have 77% of trains running on the AVE and other long distance routes accounting for 277 trains. At a regional level, fewer trains – 365 or 65% of the usual total – will run. For the vital rush hour, 75% of local trains will operate with that figure dropping to around 50% during the rest of the day. Freight trains will be those most affected with only a 20% skeleton service running. RENFE has already offered passengers affected by the strike and have previously reserved seats to book them, if possible, on the nearest service to the one booked. If they have made a decision not to travel at all today, then full refunds or the chance to change their time and date and travel can be made free of charge.
Owners and residents call to end neglect in Guardamar’s Sup-7
by Tahnee Wright For over a decade the area in Guardamar del Segura known as Sector Sup-7 has been neglected by the Town Council. owners and residents in the area claim that, despite repeated requests, nothing has been implemented on a regular basis to keep their streets clean and the area maintained. The owners and residents said: ‘Just like the property owners and residents throughout Guardamar del Segura, we also pay our taxes to the Town Hall.’ ‘However, compared with the public services and attention received everywhere else, it is almost as though Sector Sup-7 has been abandoned and forgotten.’ The people of Sup-7 have now had enough
and a Facebook page has been created (‘Guardamar del Segura Canal Denuncia’) to give them a voice. In a relatively short space of time, the Facebook page has approaching 400 followers and many photographs have been published showing the neglect of the area including photographs of blocked drains, broken street paving, dog's mess adjacent children's play areas and broken sewerage covers alongside many irate comments. The people of Sup-7 will hold a meeting this Saturday from 7.00pm onwards in the MasyMas car park and anyone interested is most welcome to attend. ‘We want our area to be given the same amount of attention and treated with similar respect as the rest of Guardamar by the Mayor and his Council’ said owners and residents.
Fire destroys car dealership A MAJOR fire raged in a local car dealership on the motorway to La Manga. The alarm was raised just after 1.0pm on Monday lunchtime and was attended by emergency services based in Cartagena and throughout the Murcia region. Two employees of the showroom, aged 32 and 45, suffered slight burns in the fire and were cared for by paramedics at the scene. They didn’t need to be taken to hospital. The interior of the car dealership was destroyed and led to delays on the adjoining motorway as firefighters tackled the blaze, which shocked many motorists as they passed by the unfolding incident.
Murcia timetables bus route revision by Glenn Scott TRANSPORT AuThORiTieS for Murcia have begun to look at a series of proposals submitted by LatBus for the improvement of some of the most popular routes used by passengers. in particular, they are considering alterations and upgrades to the following: 1 (San Ginés, Murcia, estadio Nueva Condomina), 7 (La Albatalía, Murcia, La Arboleja), 26 (el Palmar, Murcia), 28 (Sangonera la Verde, Murcia), 29 La Alberca, Murcia by Patiño), 30 (Los Ramos, Murcia) and 91 (Sangonera la Seca, Javalí Nuevo, Murcia). For all those listed above, there will be an in-depth study into the alternatives, whether it’s changes to timetables, routes or schedules. in some cases, it’s likely to result in a complete change of route where in others possible enhancements to weekend services. Councilor Roque Ortiz explained that LatBus has also proposed to modify three other lines – 31, 39 and 50 - which will be considered at the next meeting of the transport committee in September.

Dedicated swimming channel in Torrevieja TORREVIEJA cOuncIl has unveiled plans to enable an ‘open’ swimming area on the beach at los náufragos. The councillor responsible for beaches, Javier Manzanares, announced that part of the popular beach will be converted into an open water area that will enable the more serious swimmers to train in the sea “but with total security”. The channel to be created will be 500 metres long and 15 metres wide and indicated by a series of 11 buoys placed every 50 metres along the strip. Manzanares continued: "The beach of los náufragos has been chosen because it is the most protected from the extremes of weather. We are delighted to be able to encourage, enhance and facilitate water sports and this initiative will certainly be a boost to the sport of triathlon which is booming." The councillor went to say that the plans are “innovative, and something which is being done for the first time in Torrevieja, and in line with the improvements being made on all the beach areas. Our goal is for our beaches to be open to everyone. For example, this same beach at los náufragos will see three unique services combined for the first time: adapted walkways through which wheelchair users can reach the sea, disabled shower facilities and now a swimming area especially for our sportsmen and women.”

Open Letter to UK Citizens Living in Spain, from Her Majesty’s Ambassador Simon Manley Given the success of the Spanish State visit to the UK the week before last, which, among other things, highlighted the importance of people to people links between our two countries, i thought it timely to return to the subject of citizens’ rights in the negotiations on our departure from and future partnership with the eU. in the year since the eU referendum, i’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you across the country, from the Balearics to the Canaries, along the Costas and in Madrid, and our consular teams have met many more. i know from those conversations that there has been uncertainty for many of you. My teams and i have listened to your concerns about the future, including about your residency status in Spain, the level of your UK pensions, and your access to Spanish health and other social services, and have noted the questions you have about tax, inheritance, right to work and the implications of applying for Spanish nationality. At our meetings, on our social media and in interviews, i have also pledged to keep you up to date as negotiations on our exit from the european Union continue. So, let me update you on where matters stand now, in light of the latest negotiation round in Brussels last week. the UK Government has been clear that citizens are our top priority in the exit negotiations. We want an agreement that provides citizens with greater certainty about their future. Last week, we held constructive and substantive discussions with the european Commission on the bulk of the issues underpinning our respective positions on citizens’ rights. together we have taken a big step forward. there is a much clearer understanding on the detail of the positions on both sides and significant convergence on the key issues that really matter to citizens. it is clear both sides want to move towards an agreement. As you know, on 26 June, the Prime Minister outlined to Parliament an offer to protect the rights of eU citizens in the UK. We are entering the negotiations with the european Commission and the other 27 eU Member States constructively and we therefore hope that the eU27 will offer reciprocal treatment for British nationals resident in the other Member States. Many of you will have seen press reports of our 26 June offer, whether in the UK or Spanish media. i hope you will also have read the detailed proposals which are set out in “Safeguarding the position of eU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the eU” and i would encourage you to sign-up for email alerts (you can do so on the home Office gov. uk page) to receive updates, to ensure that you are receiving information and guidance from official sources. the first key element of the new proposal is residence status and working rights. Until the UK’s exit, eU citizens in the UK will continue to enjoy all the rights they currently have under eU law; they can continue to live and work in the UK just as they do now. the same rights also apply to you, British residents in Spain. You can continue to live and work here in Spain as you always have done. After the UK’s exit from the eU, we are proposing a recipro-
cal deal that would protect the right of UK nationals already in the eU to continue to live and work in the eU. We hope that the european Commission and the 27 other Member States will agree to this. the second key element is healthcare, pensions, education and access to benefits. it is our intention to treat eU citizens with settled status in the UK in the same way as if they were UK citizens for the purposes of access to education, benefits and pensions. For you, the Government has announced that the UK will continue to export and uprate the UK State Pension and provide associated healthcare cover within the eU, issues which i know from my conversations over the last year were important to many of you. At the moment, those of you who are UK pensioners and resident in Spain access healthcare through the S1 form. this means the UK reimburses Spain the cost of providing medical treatment. After the UK leaves the eU, we want to continue your healthcare entitlements on the same basis. healthcare in Spain was indeed one of the case studies cited in the detailed proposals made by the British Government on 26 June. Subject to negotiations, we want to continue participating in the european health insurance Card scheme meaning ehiC holders continue to benefit from free, or reduced-cost, needs-arising healthcare while on a temporary stay in the eU — and vice versa for eU ehiC holders visiting the UK. We hope the european Commission will agree to this. the British Government has repeatedly said that, until exit negotiations are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the european Union and all the rights and obligations of eU membership remain in force. You can continue travelling throughout the eU on your UK passport, without any visa requirements. Princess Diana’s music collection among items to go on display at palace this summer RaRely-seen possessions belonging to Britain's late Princess Diana including her music collection and ballet shoes are to go on display this summer at london's Buckingham Palace to mark the 20th anniversary of her death. Many of the objects selected to feature in the display were chosen by Diana's sons Princes William and Harry ‘to reflect their mother's commitment to duty and their personal memories of her’, the Royal Col-
lection Trust said last Friday. Diana, the first wife of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash in Paris in august 1997 and a number of commemorative events have been planned to mark her death. William and Harry attended a private service earlier this month to re-dedicate her grave on what would have been her 56th birthday. The brothers have also commissioned a
statue to be erected in her honour outside their official London home. among the possessions to be featured in the display are a leather photo frame with pictures of family and friends, a burgundy leather briefcase, and her school ‘tuck box’, which she used to keep sweets and other treats in while she was away at boarding school, which has the name ‘D spencer’ written on it. The tribute also includes a case of cas-
sette tapes, featuring albums by artists such as George Michael, Diana Ross and elton John, who famously sang at her funeral. The exhibition opened last saturday and visitors to the palace will also be able to see a collection of more than 200 gifts made to Queen elizabeth during her 65year reign including a paperweight made from a dinosaur bone and a Union Flag badge worn in space by British astronaut Major Tim Peake.

No more homeopathy on the Spanish NHS
by Glenn Scott SPANISH MINIStry of Universal and Public Health has sent an instruction to all health departments to remind them that homeopathy is excluded from the portfolio of NHS services. Furthermore, it outlaws practices described as pseudoscience and their promotion and development in public health centres. In addition, Health Minister Carmen Montón has sent a letter to the Valencian Health Authorities to request that homeopathic medicines be withdrawn as granted by royal Legislative Decree 1/2015. "Good medical practice is linked to scientific evidence and we must clearly differentiate between products that have evidence-based medicine support rather than those products and practices that have not proved their ef-
fectiveness”, said Carmen Montón. the official list of activities that are not considered as health care include naturopathic medicine, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional therapy or vitamin treatments. Also included are manipulation and body-based practices, osteopathy, chiropractic, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, shiatsu or aromatherapy, mind and body techniques, yoga, meditation, prayer, kinesiology, hypnotherapy, sophistry, art therapy, energy-based techniques, Qi-Gong or ChiKung, reiki, floral therapy, biomagnetic therapy and any other similar activity. Apart from the instruction, the Ministry has asked to withdraw recognition of homeopathy as a medicine. "the available scientific evidence concludes that homeopathy has not proved its efficacy in any particular clinical situation," it
states, adding that "considering homehome opathy as a medicine represents a real risk that directly influences the protection and restoration of health and may lead to their use in place of recognised and proven medicinal products”. this decision in Spain comes in the same week that NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens described homeopathy as “at best a placebo and a misuse of scarce NHS funds”. Over the last five years it has cost the NHS at least £578,000 for treatments using heavily diluted forms of plants, herbs and minerals. NHS England says there is no “robust evidence” homeopathy works at all and has launched a consultation to stop GPs prescribing it. Plans first announced back in March of this year have been confirmed to make UK NHS patients pay for items available cheaply in supermarkets and chemists.
World’s oldest captive manatee dies in accident at Florida aquarium Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee in captivity, has died in an accident at a Florida aquarium just days after his 69th birthday, officials said last Sunday. the giant marine mammal was found dead at Bradenton's South Florida Museum early on Sunday. Initial signs were that Snooty swam into a normally closed underwater area housing plumbing for the manatee exhibit and was unable to get out, the museum said in a statement. ‘our initial investigation indicates that Snooty’s death was a heartbreaking accident and we’re all quite devastated about his passing,’ Brynne Anne Besio, the museum’s chief executive, said in a statement. three manatees in the exhibit who are being rehabilitated for a return to the wild were unharmed. The museum said it would carry out a full investigation and a necroscopy would be performed. Snooty was born in a Miami aquarium on July 21, 1948, and moved to Bradenton, a Tampa suburb, in 1949. He became the official mascot of Manatee County in 1979 and had more than a million visitors, the statement said. About 5,000 people attended a birthday celebration for Snooty on Saturday, museum officials said. West Indian manatees, also known as sea cows, were taken off U.S. Interior Department's list of endangered species in March. A pub on every corner...and more WE’VE all heard the phrase when people discuss businesses in this area of Spain. “There are too many bars and not enough customers to fill them!” Such a theory has now been proved following the recently published results of an EU study as Spain officially holds the European record for having the most bars per person. adding the numbers of bars, pubs and cafes found in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Ireland combined and they still don’t reach the amount found in andalucía which have 47,000 of them. Bearing in mind Ireland’s reputation as a nation of Guinness drinkers, the figures will come as a surprise. To put that number into context, if andalucía was the only part of Spain that had any bars there would still be plenty for each one to cater for every 1,000 inhabitants. However, the region only accounts for fewer than 20% of the bars across the country with the total number registered being 279,243. That’s one for every 169 people. The cosiest of pubs are found in the town of Mogán, near las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria, where 547 pubs and cafes supply 23,000 residents - one venue for every 43 of the population. The remarkable figures from the report continue when it’s noted that over the past four years and resulting from the financial crisis, 70,000 bars and cafes shut down. Pub and cafe life is still important to the Spanish and increasingly so to foreign residents and tourists and it still accounts for 15% of Spain’s GDP.

Knife-wielding man shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ injures Spanish police officer
by Tahnee Wright A mAn was detained on Tuesday after attempting to cross the border between morocco and the Spanish enclave of melilla while threatening police with a knife. The man, believed to be moroccan, approached the border at Beni Enzar at 7.35am and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is Greatest) before he was brought down by police. One police officer was cut on the hand during the incident. CCTV footage shows the man, dressed in a blue shirt and white shorts, walking across the border, waving the knife.
Spanish police keep their distance before one officer runs up behind him and knocks him to the ground by striking him on the head with a white traffic bollard. Once felled, the man is tackled by several police and detained. Interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said on Twitter: ‘The rapid, coordinated and professional conduct of the police has avoided a serious incident in Beni Enzar. All my support to the hurt officer.’ melilla and its sister city Ceuta are two Spanish territories located on morocco's northern coast and as such represent the only two land borders be-
tween Africa and the European Union. They have been hit by unrest before as migrants desperate to reach Europe regularly storm the border between both territories or try and smuggle themselves in, but this is the first attack of this type. Spain has been spared the type of jihadist violence that has occurred in nearby Belgium, France and Germany. But it was hit by what is still Europe's deadliest jihadist attack in march 2004, when bombs exploded on commuter trains in madrid, killing 191 people in an attack claimed by Al Qaeda-inspired militants.
Hopes for HIV cure revived by South African child
A South AfricAn child born with hiV has surprised experts by appearing to be effectively cured of the AIDS virus after just a year of treatment followed by eight and a half years drug-free. Patients with HIV would normally need to stay on antiretroviral (ART) drugs for the rest of their lives to keep AIDS at bay. But this child, still off treatment and now almost 10 years old, has no signs of the disease. This and other recent, isolated cases of remission have given additional hope to the 37 million people worldwide infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Yet experts urged caution, saying the case is extremely rare and does not suggest a simple path to a cure. ‘It's a case that raises more questions than it necessarily answers,’ said Linda-Gail Bekker, president of the International AIDS Society (IAS). The child was part of a clinical trial in which researchers were investigating the effect of treating HIV-positive babies in the first few weeks of life, and then stopping and starting the ART medicines whilst checking whether their HIV was being controlled. The United Nations HIV/AIDS agency said last week that 19.5 million people - more than half of the 37 million patients with HIV - are now on treatment. The baby contracted HIV from its mother. Treatment with ART started when it was almost nine weeks old but was interrupted at 40 weeks when the virus had been suppressed, and the child was monitored regularly for any signs of relapse. ‘At age 9.5 years, the child was clinically asymptomatic,’ the researchers said. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has killed around 35 million people worldwide since it began in the 1980s.
Ryanair in celebratory give-away
POPULAR LOw-cOst airline Ryanair has celebrated its excellent first quarter sales figures with an offer of 500,000 highly reduced tickets. However, there was only a short window of opportunity to register interest which has now passed and also limited the period of travel to between september 2017 and January 2018. some of the flights on offer were from as little as €14.99 and unlike the fake promotion that allegedly celebrated their 35th anniversary last year, was completely genuine. Dublin, Edinburgh and London are just a few European destinations where Ryanair flies to from spain and local airports san Javier and Alicante-Elche are among the busiest. the latter is home to one of the company’s bases. the give-away has been as a result of a net profit of €397m in the first financial quarter which ended on June 30. this is 55% more than the similar period in 2016 when it registered €256m. In the same three-month period from April to June, the Irish airline increased its overall revenue by 13% to €1.910bn compared to €1.687bn last year. chief Executive Officer of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary celebrated the increase in this quarter’s profit but warned that the figures had been distorted due to Easter coming earlier this year in March. He also noted that fares increased minimally by around 1% which offset the dropping value of the pound, declines in the amount of baggage being carried and the effect of recent bombing outrages in London and Manchester. Passenger numbers are also up compared to the same three-month period in 2016 with 35 million travellers and increase of 12%.

Hundreds of sheep killed in 650-foot plunge to death
by Staff Reporter A brown bear is believed to have chased more than 200 sheep off a cliff in the Pyrenees near the border between France and Spain. 209 sheep were found dead at the foot of the cliff near the Spanish village of Lladorre. The sheep belonged to a farmer in Couflens, France. The incident happened last weekend when the bear attacked one of the sheep, sending the entire flock into a panicked frenzy, plunging off the 650-foot (200 metre) cliff in an attempt to flee the predator. Farmers have been incensed by the news, renewing the debate over the reintroduction of bears to the Pyrenees. The French government said it’ll compensate the farmer, but the local branch of the French farmers’ federation, the Confederation Paysanne de l’Ariege, is thoroughly unimpressed. ‘Pastoralism - which protects biodiversity and keeps the mountains alive - is not compatible with the reintroduction of large predators,’ it said in a statement.
‘The state, which is responsible for the reintroduction of the bears, should remove the ones that are causing problems and should not reintroduce any more bears,’ it added. brown bears were all but wiped out by hunters in the Pyrenees in the 1990s and the French government has been trying to reintroduce the animals to the region since 1996-97 when two females and a male were brought from Slovenia. There are now believed to be 35 brown bears calling this picturesque mountainous region their home. Despite protective efforts, around 300 sheep are killed each year from bear attacks, according to France’s office of Hunting and wildlife. For context, of the half a million-sheep living in the Pyrenees, about 15,000 die each year from natural causes such as disease, bad weather and falls. Sheep are also preyed upon by dogs, who may be responsible for many more sheep deaths than bears. Last year, a similar incident occurred in the Pyrenees, resulting in the death of 130 sheep.
Swedish train will be named ‘Trainy McTrainface’
A SwediSh rail operator has vowed to name one of its trains ‘Trainy McTrainface’ after a public vote, saying it would bring joy to people disappointed when Britain rejected the name Boaty McBoatface for a polar research ship following a similar poll. Trainy McTrainface won 49 per cent of the votes in the naming competition, conducted online by train operator MTR express and Swedish newspaper Metro, beating choices such as hakan, Miriam and Poseidon. ‘(This is) news that will be received with joy by many, not just in Sweden,’ MTR wrote in a statement. The train will run between the Swedish capital Stockholm and the country's second-biggest city Gothenburg. Last year, the British government said a new £200 million (€223 million) polar research ship would be named after veteran BBC naturalist david Attenborough even though the name ‘Boaty McBoatface’ had topped an online poll. The instigator of the Boaty name later apologised for his suggestion, which won more than 124,000 votes. As a consolatory gesture, the research ship's remotely operated undersea vehicle, designed to collect samples from the deep waters of the Arctic and Antarctic, will be named Boaty McBoatface, the government said.

This is the umpteenth time he’s climbed upon the stage of the Parque Almansa and followed the smooth tones of saxophonist José Luis Gutiérrez. The man, the guitarist, the singer, the songwriter, a legend of contemporary music, winner of ten Grammy awards simply could not miss the 20th
anniversary of this popular festival to where people from all over the country and beyond come to visit. The date is very firmly put into the diary at the earliest opportunity. At the age of 74, George continues to raise the same expectation every time he appears and this time brought with him a superb group of musicians consisting of Stanley Banks on bass, Thom Hall on piano and keyboards, Michael O'Neil on guitar and backing vocals, Khari Parker on drums, Liliana de los Reyes on percussion and choirs, and
Randy Waldman as musical director and master of keyboards. As he made his way through some of his classic ballads and jazz favourites, the audience were in a dancing mood. George obliged with Give Me The Night and the dance floor filled, and stayed full as he moved on to On Broadway. It was an impeccable but conventional jazz funk concert performed by a born entertainer. Everything is the same, nothing changes, and that’s what his adoring public had come for. He will be welcome back at any time.

Minimum pre-test driving lessons proposed ACCORDING tO Spain's General Directorate of traffic (DGt), a minimum number of driving lessons may be introduced as a legal requirement before candidates can take a test. this would include the theory test as well as the practical, meaning it would no longer be solely down to the student whether they felt they were adequately prepared to take the tests. the idea is to partly prevent a selection of inexperienced drivers who are supremely confident that they can have a good day and pass the tests, but in truth aren’t ready to face the realities of day-to-day driving. the exact minimum number of lessons which will apply has not yet been decided.

It’s holiday time again. Have you got that Liberty feeling? Once again, summer is here with a vengeance. For example, if you want to carry straight on then it’s best to take the outside lane, and if you intend to turn left, take the inside lane. What many people do, is take the outside lane with the intention of turning left but the driver on the inside lane who is going straight on, has to be very careful to avoid a collision with the vehicle going all the way round. aside from the inevitable increase in traffic accidents with the huge influx of tourists from around the world, you need to make sure your car is up to scratch too. For example, always make sure that your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month especially as road surfaces become very hot indeed and will affect the pressures. needless to say, check the tyres too and make sure they are in
good condition with enough tread. also check the car’s radiator water level; the last thing you want is to overheat if you’re stuck in a queue and worse still have to wait for a breakdown truck. it’s also illegal to run out of screen-wash so keep this topped up. Driving with flip-flops or shoes without backs is not permitted either. Obviously seat belts must be worn all round and children need safety harnesses. and stating the obvious too, mobile phones must not be used for speaking (unless using a built-in hands-free device) and definitely no texting! If you do have an accIdent, remember the followIng: Stay calm and use the reflective vest. Use your vehicle’s emergency flashers and use two warning triangles at appropriate distances from the vehicle. Stay away from oncoming traffic. call 112 if necessary. A ‘grand’ day for the Elche Children’s Home JUST OVER €1,000 was raised at another great afternoon of fun and entertainment all in aid of the Elche Children’s Home. Under the very capable hosting of the witty Ricky Neil from Sunshine FM, the Citrus Centre was the venue that saw Nigel Burchill as Elvis, Johnny Lea, Cindy Fitzpatrick, and of course Mr Charity himself Stevie Spit. Ann Bartlett splendidly organised a major raffle and both kids and adults’ Tombola. The representatives of the Elche Children’s Home – Jenny and Roger – want to take this opportunity of thanking everyone involved during the afternoon – especially the entertainers that gave their time for free - but would like a special mention for Lynn and the staff of the Eden Restaurant, Ann and John Bartlett at Johnson's Supermarket and last but by no means least Jane and Dave at the Friendly Bar who invited children from Elche Children's Care Home to attend the event and supplied them with most welcome pizza. The final figure raised was a fantastic €1,134.

A good sign for the Alzheimer’s Association
by Staff Reporter MEMBERS of the Costa Blanca Rawhiders Motorcycle Club paid a visit recently to the Torrevieja Alzheimer's Association AfA, to see the fruit of their ongoing fundraising efforts on behalf of the association. The results of their latest venture had seen the previously old and dilapidated sign on
the front of the day care centre being completely replaced with a brand new one; all fully funded by the Rawhiders MCC. Spokesman for the Club, Ed Purcell said: “We are proud to be able to assist such a wonderful, compassionate and caring organisation.” As a sign of appreciation, the Club were presented with a plaque on behalf of the AfA.

THE AsociAción EspAñolA conTrA El cáncEr (AECC) was the grateful beneficiary of a fantastic sum of €1,000 raised at a prize day event organised by Ruby’s Golf Society. Held at Rayz Bar in El Raso, Ann Bissett, an AECC volunteer at University Hospital Torrevieja for ten years, was there representing the association to receive the donation from Diana Davies, and the Society and thanked the members for their generosity and thoughtfulness. The money was raised from a large raffle, an auction and donations in memory of the wellknown local personality and golf correspondent Ivie Davies, a member that sadly passed away from cancer last October. His wife Diana asked that the money be spent on further cancer research, particularly pancreatic cancer that her husband had died from.

Prefiero, para At the end of last week’s article I gave you some homework. In fact, there was rather a lot, but I hope you had a go at least! here are the answers: Translate into English No puedo firmar hoy. I can’t sign today. ¿Quieres visitar a tu amigo? Do you want to visit your friend? No necesito correr. I don’t need to run. Me gusta hacer los deberes. I like doing homework. No voy a leer todo el libro. I’m not going to read all the book. Translate into Spanish Do you want to have a lot of money? ¿Quieres tener mucho dinero? I like watching the news. Me gusta ver las noticias (or “el telediario”) I can’t drink and drive. No puedo beber y conducir. Are you going to write a letter? ¿Vas a escribir una carta? I need to go to the chemist. Necesito ir a la farmacia. Today we are going to learn a couple of ways in which these sentences can be made even longer, whilst at the same time giving us the opportunity to
express more interesting ideas. Firstly, we are going to look at one more “first person” word, which is prefiero. Prefiero means “I prefer”. Of course we can only use “I prefer” in a sentence if we are contrasting one idea with another. For example, let’s take one of our homework sentences: “I don’t like going out much.” It’s easy to see how we can extend this idea with the contrast of what we do like doing: “I don’t like going out much; I prefer … to stay at home.” We can use words we have already learnt to express this, by changing “stay” to “be”, like this: “No me gusta salir mucho; prefiero estar en casa” (i.e. I prefer to be at home). Let’s try another one: “I don’t need to run; I prefer to walk.” “No necesito correr; prefiero andar”. What about this one: “I’m not going to read everything; I prefer to listen ”No voy a leer todo; prefiero escuchar”. We don’t always need to change the main verb in these sentences, we might want to change other information. For example: “No quiero ir a Murcia, prefiero ir a Elche” (I don’t want to go to Murcia, I prefer to go to Elche.” “No voy a comprar un vestido; prefiero comprar pantalones” (I’m not going to buy a dress; I prefer to buy trousers.”) And now for the second way we can extend our sentences – and this really is exciting! We can use the word para to explain our purpose in during something. The way we are going to use para it means
“to” in the sense of “in order to”. Some of you might already know this word as meaning “for” as in “para mí” (for me). However many of the “little words” in Spanish have more than one meaning, as is the case with para. The great thing as well is that after para we can still use our verbs in the infinitive form. Let’s get straight on to an example of what I’m talking about, again using our homework as a starting point: Me gusta ver las noticias para aprender más español. I like watching the news to learn more Spanish (in order to learn more Spanish). If that isn’t abundantly clear, see if you can get this one: Voy a ir a Inglaterra para visitar a mi familia. (I’m going to go to England to (in order to) visit my family. We’re running out of space now and I think we need to spend a bit more time on this next week, so in the meantime, what do these sentences mean in English? Necesito firmar esto para comprar mi casa. Voy a volver a casa para ver el fútbol. Quiero aprender español para hablar con mi vecino.

UNDER THE baleful influence of Wall Street and Washington, Europe once again stands at the crossroads of history. A recurring theme, our small continent has faced an uncertain future several times during the last 100 years. In 1917 an American-backed coup d’état delivered Imperial Russia to the West’s corporate and banking elites. Never mind what you are told; follow instead the trail of the Tsar’s disappearing gold and fate of 184 million Russians through the Wall Street financed Gulag Archipelago. In 1918, the Great War, described by Field-Marshal Allenby as “a lengthy period of general insanity,” drew to a close. So did the lives and limbs of 41 million martyrs to political vanities. The ‘Bore War’ of 1939 escalated into world war in June 1940 when Germany’s peace proposals were snubbed. This calamity resulted in the martyrdom of at least 50 million mostly European peoples. Never mind what we are told by the victors; at Yalta in February 1945, the war to ‘defend our freedoms’ delivered 22 nations to Joe Stalin’s tyrannical USSR. These nations occupation was to drag on for a further 45 years. Ironically, one of these betrayed nations was Poland whose occupation started the war. In 1949 the guilty parties suggested that we join hands under the protective umbrella of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Since then, an estimated 35 million people have been martyred to NATO ambitions. The USSR, drooled over as allies, in 1955 formed their rival Warsaw Pact. Governed from Moscow both the Warsaw Pact and the Eastern Bloc collapsed in 1990. Today, the European Union’s governing, banking, media, foreign policy and defence requirements are governed by Wall Street, Washington DC and the Pentagon’s talking heads. In 2010 I predicted that the EU would follow the Soviet Bloc into the dustbin of history. My words are
today echoed by many of the political elite. I was ridiculed for predicting the end of American omnipotence, but they’re not laughing now. Perhaps on this occasion we Europeans can get it right. Might I suggest we follow pragmatic examples set by China, Belarus, India, Iran, Syria, and the pivoting Middle East? For safety in numbers we welcome realpolitik by becoming a peaceful trading partner rather than belligerent rivals to these other nations. By a single revolution in thought we remove the
shadow of war, divert arms and munitions expenditure to social needs, and look forward to a mutually beneficial trading partnership with a trading bloc that we cannot hope to rival anyway. This is the one outcome that keeps Wall Street, Washington DC the Pentagon and U.S arms conglomerates sleepless nights. Such a bloc would put the final nail in the coffin of American dollar imperialism. You decide; do you want to be a living European or a dead American.

I arrIved in Berlin in January 1960 at the height of winter, as a young journalist this was to be my home for the next couple of years. The following day I was introduced to a man who was going to shape my life, his name was ernesto Krieg originally a son of a German diplomat who had retired from his post in Caracas, venezuela, and stayed on as a business representative for a German company, however he died in the late fifties, ernesto was born in 1925 and spent all his informative life in Caracas. When we met on a bitterly cold day in Berlin, he shook my hand welcoming me in the typical German formal way by calling me Herr Mann, however he soon dropped the formality and we became good friends using first name’s. It was a known fact that journalists are quite free to roam almost anywhere with the right type of credentials and a bit of nous, many had either been inducted by their countries so called secret Government organisations to spy or provide information, in several cases many journalists had even volunteered, the man that arranged my time in Berlin was a Major (I cannot use his name even though he is dead) son of a former Hungarian immigrant who managed a Press agency in London’s Fleet street in the 1950s the home of the British Newspapers and Press agencies. Within a few days and several meetings with officers from the French, american and British representatives and putting me through certain instructions, and how I could use my excellent knowledge of cameras, one in particular that I had made was miniature camera that was hidden in a hollowed out book with a tiny hole for the lens, and also my knowledge of electrical technology, ernesto and myself started to go to work. ernesto hated his German ancestry, his great love was venezuela, its life style, its people, so probing the infrastructure in eastern Berlin and east Germany was like manner from heaven for him. Within days of my instructors putting me through rigorous training, we started to make daily journey’s through Check Point Charlie, our papers were checked by the american authority’s on the West side, the barrier was lifted and we negotiated our way through tank traps into no man’s land, we parked the car within the russian/east German sector and walked into the large hut, escorted by two volks Politzie or vo Po’s as they were called, showing our credentials and body searched, if we were lucky we could continue, however sometimes to make our crossing difficult we would be grilled and searched again and again. Hugo Chavez reign brought wealth to venezuela, more schools for children, greater access to drinking water and plenty of food in the shops, people said that the country was a paradise, a complete utopia, but his leftish politics became a major thorn in the side of america. Now Nicholas Maduro the president of venezuela has driven venezuela in the opposite direction, with a huge shortage of food in the supermarkets, shortage of medicines, rolling blackouts, rising unemployment, increased violence in the streets, even malaria once almost eradicated is back. The IMF says that venezuela has a negative growth of (-8%) and an inflation rate of (48%) unemployment is expected to climb
to (30%) all this has cast a shadow of desperation the spread of unrest and a surge in criminality. after months of rioting venezuela is heading to the brink, this has worried neighbouring countries, his once opposition Henrique Capriles has been banned from running for any political office for 15 years. The new opposition leader is Freddy Guevara who has called for further 24 hour strikes, while hundreds have been killed in the demonstration. anti-Government lawyers accuse Maduro of being responsible for drug running and emptying the government coffers, and stealing the gold reserves. In 2011 venezuela had $30b reserves now they have less than $10b, and their imports are down 50%. The oil production has ceased to a trickle owing to strikes. With rising prices, many people unable to eat and the millions that are demonstrating on the streets, the once great country of venezuela is a paradise lost?

Hair today gone tomorrow When I was a kid, I was blessed with a mop of almost white blond hair. I say blessed, but as a young boy growing up in the 50’s, hair was not something you thought that much about, until the time came around when Mum sent me off to Fred Lester the local barber, for a harsh trim. The attention from female neighbours was certainly not welcome when they would comment to my Mum on those white golden locks, and my cheeks would flush with embarrassment. If it became just a little too long and a visit to the barber shop was overdue, the unfortunate effect was that it would start to curl making the situation worse and attracting comments likening me to the hollywood child star, Shirley Temple. Luckily the order of the day was short back and sides. Then the Swingin’ Sixties rolled around and long hair became fashionable. Problem for me was the curly question. All the pop idols of the day from the Stones to the inappropriately named Pretty Things, sported outrageously long hair. even the Beatles, whose hairstyles look fairly moderate today, had styles that were regarded as long by previous standards. But the one thing they all had in common was straight hair, and I was constantly looking for ways to take the kinks out of my own unruly barnet.
I wanted to look like John Lennon or Keith Richards, not Louise XIV. Then in the seventies I came into my own and for some reason curls were in and became part of the glam rock boom. hey, if it was good enough for the likes of Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, then it was good enough for me. Out of sight man. I was hip and I was cooool! Today, even though my body takes five hour lunch breaks, and I cannot remember where I put my underpants (oh, I’ve got them on), I am pleased to report that my hair is intact, and the envy of my contemporaries. Okay, there’s almost as much in my nostrils and ears these days, but you can’t have it all. I recently located a follically impaired buddy from my 70’s days through the magic of Facebook, and he was delighted to have re-connected, even though in his words: ‘You spent the seventies looking like a yak’s backside’. envy. Such an unattractive trait in a person I always think.

Until recently i was very passionate about what was happening in the UK, but sadly i feel myself becoming increasingly disinterested but at the same time, very concerned. Day after day, we hear nothing else but Brexit, Brexit, Brexit and confusion appears to surround the talks as it is still unknown what the UK is seeking and the EU negotiators seem to be a very hard bunch, and of course, at the end of the talks with Brussels there are the 27 other countries who need to agree. This could take years. Months have passed, Sterling is suffering very badly, inflation is increasing, as well as costs, especially food. This is just the beginning, and as the old saying goes “be careful what you ask for”. I honestly feel that the reality of coming out of the EU is far harsher and more dangerous than the ideology behind it. Often, what we have is pretty good and what we end up with can be a nightmare. It does not help that apart from the Guardian newspaper, the press seem to fully support Brexit. I also am noticing more and more, an anger in the UK that worries me. What is happening to people? It appears to be a very divided nation with no one strong enough to pull it all together. The country needs a strong, sensible, honest, street-wise person with sensitivity – please send your CV to ….. Recently I listened to a programme on the compensation culture in the UK. Once again, I am appalled by what is happening and I understand the Spanish, especially in areas like Benidorm, are becoming
increasingly angry and hostile regarding claims being made by British tourists on their return home claiming they have suffered badly from food poisoning. Last year the EU brought in a ruling that insurance premiums would need to be increased to be able to compensate for the vast increase in claims, particularly for whip lash. In the UK 11% was added, whilst Spain increased the premiums by 8.9%. However, the good news is Liberty Seguros, as they have a separate, specialist ExPat Division with different terms and conditions attached, have been able to keep the premium increase to 2.4 %. This, of course, has benefitted all the Ex Pats, and includes those unique “Baby Boomers”, who are with Liberty. What a great bunch we all are! Due to us being responsible people, and good drivers, we benefit greatly as expats and believe me, it is worth taking advantage, because it is not just the price that is beneficial. When I see the advertisements on British television regarding house and car insurance policies, I am concerned that people will assume that the equivalent polices in Spain are exactly the same. They are not! For example, there is no need to join an independent recovery service, as Spain has the benefit of the excellent grua service which is part of your policy. They will try and repair the vehicle roadside, and if this is not possible a decision will be taken to take your car to a garage, either in the area of the break down, or to the relevant garage in your area. Remember, it is illegal to tow a vehicle in Spain. Depending on where you break down, you could be offered either a taxi or a hotel. Please remember that not all insurance companies offer
free mileage via the grua, and this can become very expensive, if you are not fully covered. Also, if entitled, you will be offered a courtesy car. Spanish insurance has another marvellous system. Every policy has a small Consortio tax. This tax is payable to the government, with a specialised department which handles all the claims from an area which has been deemed a “disaster”, usually due to severe weather. Why the UK doesn´t introduce this very simple but effective method is a mystery to me. It would help so much, especially when dealing with flooding. I often see advertisements claiming cover for earthquakes, which of course if over 6.4 on the Richter scale are covered by the Consortio. However, when small earth tremors occur and damage is suffered by either the house or the contents, which often happens in Spain, you will need Accidental Cover to protect yourself and your home. Let me assure you that there are very few insurance companies that offer this Accidental Cover, but Liberty Seguros does. If you have a contents cover in excess of €30,000, this extra protection can be added to your policy. Obviously this cover is not restricted to just earth tremors, it is extremely comprehensive. Another advert shown on British television is protection for long term rented homes. Liberty also offer this protection to include loss of rent and legal defence. The difference in insuring with Liberty Seguros, is that it is a world-wide, bona fide insurance company, with very strong ethics and very service based. Torrevieja Stroke Support benefit again
THERE was never any doubt that as soon as people knew that woody & The Peckers were providing the entertainment for the recently held charity night for the Torrevieja stroke support (Tss) it was going to be a sell-out. and sold out it was two weeks before the event! Quesada Fish & Chips was the venue for the latest fund raising function for this very worthwhile cause and those attending not only enjoyed a superb meal, the excellent entertainment but dug deep into their pockets to raise €1,107 which will be spent on new physiotherapy equipment. Tss is the only group of its kind in spain, but do support stroke victims from a much wider area than Torrevieja. as a consequence they have changed their registered name to stroke association spain and have recently taken over some new premises based in the Benijofar Cultural Centre. The fund raising events for the newly named ‘sas’ continue throughout the summer with wednesday 16 august the next date for the diary. Music fans will recognise that date as being the 40th anniversary since the death of Elvis Presely. The King will be affectionately remembered thanks to the great Danny Fisher who promises a special tribute. Once again, Quesada Fish & Chips (Ciudad Quesada restaurant) host the event and tickets are now available for €10. Anglican Chaplaincy goes all interactive The AnglicAn chAplAincy of St peter & St paul Torrevieja has launched a major revamp of their web site to showcase the activities of the church and its work in the wider community. The chaplaincy, which brings together the eight Anglican churches on the South costa Blanca, east costa calida and Murcia is active in every part of the community and provides a full range of christian services for local people. The revamp was overseen by Maggie Dew from campoverde church who said, "We set out to provide an easy point of access for anyone who wishes either to know about the church and what we do, or those people who have need of the churches’ services whether this is for the good things such as Baptisms, Wedding Blessings and Special Occasions; or those sadder occasions such as Funerals and Memorial Services". Baked aubergines with mozzarella This is a wonderful side dish or can be used as part of a main meal. Ingredients:
2 aubergines, sliced in half lengthways 3 tablespoons of olive oil 1 onion chopped 1 garlic clove crushed 250g (8oz) can chopped tomatoes 1 tablespoon tomato puree 300g (10oz) mozzarella cheese cut into thin slices salt and pepper basil (optional) to garnish
Method:
Preheat oven to 200C (400F) Gas Mark 6 Brush the aubergines with 2 tablespoons of the oil and arrange, cut side up onto a baking sheet. Roast in the oven for 20 minutes. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is soft and just starting to brown. Add the tomatoes and tomato puree and simmer gently for 5 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. Once the aubergines are done, remove from the oven and cover each half with some sauce and 2 mozzarella slices. Season with salt and pepper and place back in the oven for 4-5 minutes so the cheese melts. Scatter basil leaves over the top (optional) and serve immediately. Serves 4. Preperation time: 10 minutes. Cooking Time: 25 minutes.

Whether used for cooking, in salad dressings, as a preservative or just nibbled with a plate of tapas, the olive and it’s oil are full of healthy mono saturated fats, essential for maintaining a healthy body. The powerful compounds found in olive leaves destroy invading organisms and don’t allow viruses to replicate and cause an infection. Olive leaves show an important role as a natural cancer treatment because of its ability to stop the angiogenic process, which stimulates the growth of tumors. the compound oleuropein has an antioxidant and anti-angiogenic effect by inhibiting the reproduction and migration of advanced tumor cells. Historically, olive leaves are known as a symbol of peace, so it is not surprising that olive leaf tea provides a soothing, relaxing, gently mellow herbal brew that evokes a sense of wellbeing. Some lemon or honey enhances the flavour; it is excellent chilled and drunk over ice. Healthy ways to avoid a caesarean section EnCouraGInG HEalTHy eating and physical activity during pregnancy limits excess weight gain and lowers the odds of having a caesarean section, finds a study published by The British Medical Journal (BMJ). The benefits are consistent, regardless of a woman’s age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI) and underlying medical conditions, suggesting that all women should be given advice on diet and lifestyle as part of routine antenatal care. Both maternal obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy (gestational weight gain) put mother and infant at risk, both in pregnancy and in later life, with considerable costs to the health service and society. Interventions based on diet or physical activity, or both, in pregnancy minimise gestational weight gain, and therefore may have a role in preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes. So researchers from the International Weight Management in Pregnancy (i-WIP) Collaborative Group set out to assess the effects of diet and physical activity based interventions in pregnancy on weight gain and outcomes such as caesarean section, stillbirth and admission to a newborn intensive care unit. Interventions included access to a dietician, specific antenatal classes for advice on diet and lifestyle, or structured exercise of moderate intensity such as aerobics or using a cycling machine. The research team analysed individual participant data from 36 randomised trials involving over 12,500 women, grouped according to age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), and underlying medical conditions. overall, the trials had a low risk of bias. Diet and physical activity based interventions consistently reduced gestational weight gain, regardless of age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, BMI, and existing medical conditions, and remained when studies at high risk of bias were excluded. Interventions also lowered the odds of caesarean section, but had no effect on offspring outcomes, such as stillbirth or admission to an intensive care unit. When they included additional study-level data, they found additional benefit for gestational diabetes. The authors outline some study limitations, including the fact that participants were mostly white and of medium to high education status, a factor favouring compliance with interventions. nevertheless, they say their analysis

Potassium Increasing potassium intake along with decreasing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Good sources of potassium include fruits, vegetables and low-fat or fat-free milk and yoghurt. Choose low-sodium foods and replace salt with other herbs and spices to reduce your sodium intake. HealtHy Fats For weight control and overall health, limit fat calories to 20 percent to 35 percent of your diet. Most of the fats you consume should come from heart-healthy unsaturated fats. Try extra-virgin olive oil, canola oil, walnuts, almonds and avocadoes. Healthy older men without heart disease should limit saturated fats, which comes from meat, full-fat dairy and fried foods, to 10 percent of total fat calories. Men with high cholesterol need to cut more saturated fat from their diet and should limit it to 7 percent of total fat calories.

Is all petrol and diesel the same? IT´S A common question that often triggers big arguments. Is branded petrol and diesel better than supermarket fuel, or should you just buy the cheapest you can find? The problem is that most people don’t know how the fuel business works, and the truth is a well-kept trade secret. Premium fuels, such as Shell V-Power Nitro+ and BP Ultimate, are not the same as regular petrol or diesel , although you can mix them freely with standard fuels without problems. Petrol like this is known as ‘super unleaded’. Confusingly, the petrol that is labelled as ‘premium unleaded’ on forecourt pumps is actually standard petrol. When it comes to fuel, super is better than premium!
These ‘super unleaded’ fuels cost several pence per litre more than regular unleaded. For this extra money, you get a different, more sophisticated package of additives for cleaning and lubrication, and fuel with a higher octane rating. It’s a similar story with ‘super’ diesels, like BP Ultimate Diesel. Octane (petrol) and cetane (diesel) ratings describe the way a fuel burns inside an engine. Broadly speaking, a higher rating means a fuel will burn more efficiently and effectively inside your engine. This may improve performance and/or economy slightly – although not all drivers will see a noticeable difference. All fuels sold in the UK conform to the relevant British Standards. This means that they should all work in roughly the same way and you can mix them freely in your car’s fuel tank. The standard petrol and diesel that’s sold on garage forecourts is mixture of two things – Base fuel and an additives package. The base fuel is the same for all companies – in fact, it usually comes from the same tanks at the local fuel refinery/distribution centre. What varies is the additives package that goes into the fuel. These additives packages are secret recipes of extra ingredients that help keep the engine clean and improve lubrication inside the engine cylinders. Each fuel company has its own additives packages and these are different. So it is possible (but not common) for some drivers to feel that their car responds better to the additives used by one fuel manufacturer over those of another.

The smart future is orange IF YOU´RE planning to drive back to the UK to escape the heat of the summer or indeed just visiting for a short time and considering hiring a car, you might not be aware of the latest colourful changes being introduced to motorways.

Over the last few years, British drivers have got used to using smart motorways, where the hard shoulder is used as a traffic lane during busy periods. But what happens if you break down? As it turns out, smart motorways have been modified to include emergency areas at intervals along them. These are basically lay-bys, fitted with an emergency phone with which you can summon help. The hope is that if you run into trouble, you’ll be able to make it to the next area. The problem is that many drivers aren’t aware of these emergency areas and even if they are, may not try to make it on to the next one. To help make smart motorways easier to use, Highways England is trialling some orange emergency areas painted in that colour to make them more noticeable. It’s also hoped that the orange colouring will discourage drivers from using these areas for non-emergency purposes. They are not suitable for use as rest areas and drivers should remember that stopping on motorways is not allowed unless there’s an emergency. The first orange emergency area went live on 14 July on the M3, near Camberley. The agency plans to upgrade more motorway emergency areas to the new orange design if the trial is successful. One concern held by the RAC and shared by some drivers is that the emergency areas on smart motorways may be too far apart. In a statement the RAC said: “We remain concerned about the long distances between ERAs

England hockey boss in health scare DANNY KERRY, the man who masterminded the Great Britain women’s gold medal winning performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics has suffered a heart attack. In news that has only just been made public in a statement by England Hockey, the 46-year-old was taken ill on July 15 during the recent World League Semi-Final being played in South Africa. Mr Kerry still continues to receive treatment in a Johannesburg hospital and is shortly due to fly back to England “for a further period of rest and recovery” and expected to return to work in September. During his absence, the England team took bronze medal place after a 5-2 victory over Argentina at the weekend. “Danny’s health has remained our sole and absolute priority,” said England Hockey performance director Ed Barney. “We wish him the very best over the coming weeks as he continues his recovery.” Kerry expressed his “huge thanks and debt of gratitude” to the doctors who treated him in South Africa, and to England team doctor Cath Lester. He went on to say: “I would also like to convey how proud I am of how both players and staff continued through the tournament in such a professional manner, particularly during the Saturday I was admitted.” Kerry’s term in charge has coincided with the most successful era in the history of the England and Great Britain women’s teams.
Froome shows his tour de force
BRITAIN’S SUCCESSFUL weekend of sport was rounded off in perfect style when Chris Froome won the Tour de France for the fourth time in five years on Sunday. The Team Sky rider is now second in the all-time list after completing his third successive victory. Rigoberto Uran was second, 54 seconds behind, with Romain Bardet third. As tradition dictates, the final stage is essentially a processional one as the group makes their way to Paris. Such are the informalities that Yoann Offredo stopped to greet family and friends as the race passed close to his home and Cyril Gautier wrote a marriage proposal on a piece on paper that was then broadcast across the world on television. “Each time I have won has been so unique, such a different battle to get to this moment,” said Froome after he’d been crowned the winner. “They are all so special but this will be remembered as the closest and most hard fought.” Team SKY director Nicolas Portal puts Froome’s success down to what are described as ‘cannibal instincts’. “He is normal off the bike, someone you can become friends with, but this guy has won the Tour de France four times and been on the podium in the Vuelta. On the bike he has his strength and this cannibal instinct. He just wants to win and his team-mates have to keep him calm. “When there’s a little bit of crosswinds he just wants to go. To be honest, that is strange because when you know him he’s quite calm.” Team-mates were also quick to show their support for the record breaker. Luke Rowe said: “He doesn’t get the respect for how much of an intelligent rider he is, sometimes he seems erratic or he just moves freely, but he’s intelligent and thinks things through.” Froome’s win puts him ahead of American Greg LeMond and two others with three wins each. T.M.G.S on their travels THE MEMBERS Golf Society (TMGS) decided on an hour’s excursion to the Alicante Golf for their latest golf day although finding it was a difficult as trying to locate a lost ball! However, it was worth the wait to arrive as it’s an impressive venue hosting an excellent course with the slight exception of a small amount of sand on the greens as a result of recent hollow tinning. The higher handicapped players tend to suit the slower greens, but this day was an exception with the best scores being achieved by Gold category members and Kenny Hunter showed the kind of form that hasn’t been witnessed for a while. Fellow members teased him as he was welcomed to his new handicap and took bets on how well he would do next time out! There are six par 3 holes on the course and two of them that really should be reached by all the golfers; unless, that is, if the water isn’t found on the way! There was no nearest the pin (NTP) winner on the very short 124m third hole, but John Hettrick did hit the short 12th and managed to make the putt for his share of the €48 in the 2’s pot. The other player to make a 2 was Carsten Landaas on the 6th hole. Other N.T.P. winners on the day were Joe Dean (hole 8), N. Williams (15) and Derek “I beat Joe Dean on the 17th” Sullivan. The Society welcomed a couple of guests at this event and the winner was M.Ericsson with 28 points. Alan “Cuddly from Dudley” Rickers had the lowest of four players to take 3rd place in the Silver category with 32 pts. Treasurer, Alex Goslan was a solitary point behind to take 2nd place on a slightly higher handicap with 33 points from Graham Smith. Kenny Winton’s 34 points, off a nine handicap was good enough to secure 3rd place in the Gold category; 2nd was ”Viking” Carsten Landaas with his 35 points, but it was the aforementioned Kenny Hunter who led the field with 39 points. This year’s anniversary competition will be played at La Marquesa on August 9 which is followed by a presentation meal in the clubhouse which is free to all members that take part on the day.
