el Verger’s guardia civil arrested a 58-year-old spanish man and a 41-year-old spanish woman in Denia this week for fraud, misappropriation, crimes against workers’ rights and falsifying documentation. For two years, the pair have been collecting money through various means for an animal charity – which has been proven to be non-existent. the fraudsters have scammed altruistic animal lovers into donating over €300,000, which has instead funded their lavish lifestyle. the investigation was initiated after several concerned collaborators reported to the guardia civil that they suspected funds being raised were not being spent on the cause in hand. the man, who boasted of being a wealthy businessman and the woman, his ‘right hand’ arrived in Denia in 2015 and formed the fake charity soon afterwards. through the fake charity, they signed agreements with several animal protectoras across the Marina alta, pledging to build an animal shelter. they organised fundraising campaigns and events to encourage donations towards the build of the animal shelter and hundreds of local establishments ingenuously displayed the fake charity’s collection boxes. the fake charity and the build of the animal shelter came to have such a local impact that a well-known Denian notfor-profit collaborated with the fraudsters to raise funds over the 2016 /2017 christmas campaign. the campaign, thanks to publicity from the well-known not-for-profit tripled donations for the fake charity. With no progress being made towards the build of the animal shelter but thousands of euros having been collected, the animal protectoras began to request documentation from the man and the woman earlier this year. at this point, the man fled, leaving the woman in Denia. residents reported to the spanish press that, when seen in Denia and quizzed regarding the whereabouts of the man, the woman would say he had been hospitalised but would never reveal where. When the guardia civil took over the case, officers discovered, as expected, that the animal charity was not legally registered. officers found that the man had been using fake names for approximately 10 years and that he had carried out similar scams across spain. Both fraudsters were finally arrested at a house in alcoy where officers found documentation proving the man’s true identity hidden in a safe. the man - who was found to be wanted by several courts in Barcelona - is being detained in prison as he presents a flight risk whilst the woman has been released on bail.

Boat explosion leaves couple with burns by Tahnee Wright A mAn and a woman were left with burns after their boat exploded at the marina nou Fontana on the Arenal beach in Javea last weekend. The couple, aged between 40 and 45 were thrown into the sea after their boat exploded due to a short circuit at around 4.00pm last Sunday. The Policia Local, Guardia Civil and the Red Cross attended the scene with ambulances. The man was treated for first-degree burns suffered to his feet and legs and the women was treated for second-degree burns suffered to her arms and legs. They were both taken to Hospital de Denia-marinaSalud where they remained under supervision until later that evening.

Benidorm’s national Police arrested two men last week who were involved in a car chase come shoot out between la Vilajoyosa and the city. the chase began in la Vilajoyosa at around 7.15pm last thursday night. a row is said to have erupted outside the el Fogon de Gonzalo restaurant on the n-332 which prompted the chase. Four cars raced down the road at high speed, their drivers/ passengers firing at each other. many neighbours called the emergency services but by this time the cars had already covered several kilometres, still firing at each other and crashing into each other. it was not until the chase arrived in Benidorm that two men were arrested whilst the rest managed to flee. anyone with any information should contact Benidorm’s national Police.

5 rescue operations and a €750 fine for ignorant swimmers by Tahnee Wright Dangerous currents off the arenal beach in Javea on tuesday caused lifeguards to hoist the red flags for the first time this summer. the most serious of all beach warning flags, red flags warn swimmers of serious hazards in the water. red flags mean that the surf is high or there are dangerous currents, or both. It means that the water is closed to swimming, as conditions are too dangerous for even the strongest swimmers.

Despite the red flags clearly flying across the beach, swimmers ignored the warnings, which resulted in five rescue operations taking place. the lifeguards rescued two young men aged around 20, a man aged around 45, a woman aged around 60 and a minor aged 14. a Dutch tourist ignored the lifeguards several times as they told him not to enter the water – which resulted in the police being called, who handed him a €750 fine. Javea resident missing for over four weeks OFFICERS OF the Guardia Civil and the Local Police have been searching for over four weeks for Andres Rojas Useche, a Javea resident who has been reported missing. Andres - who is 36-years-old - is said to have gone missing on June 23. He is Colombian, between 1.70 and 1.75 metres tall and has green eyes. If you have any information, please contact either of the forces.

Javea ayuntamiento released a statement on Wednesday reminding all beach-goers to respect the beach warning flags and that, although the surf is low on the arenal beach, the water is subject to strong currents that make it difficult to return to shore once in the water.

Statement released by police over Moraira homophobic attack by Tahnee Wright Teulada’s local Police have released a statement regarding a homophobic attack that took place on July 9 at the Moraira fiestas. local Police officers were accused by the victims of paying little attention to the attack, and the Valencian observatory against Hate crimes has become involved. The Valencian observatory against Hate crimes has demanded an explanation from the Policia local and if it is not deemed satisfactory, a complaint will be filed. The accusations against the local Police officers have been widely published in the spanish press, causing the ayuntamiento to post a status on their Facebook page condemning the attack. The local Police later released a statement strongly denying that its officers ‘stood idly by’ at the scene of the attack, as was suggested by the victims. “The facts described in the news were not witnessed by the agents because when receiving the communication by the people attacked, attempts were made to give health care to the aggressor, and secondly, an attempt was made to identify the alleged perpetrators." “at no time was the incident ignored or downplayed as was hinted at in the media, but treated the same way as others incidents that occur during the course of festive acts.”

Helicopter rescues family from mountain range The Provincial consorTium of firefighters rescued a family from the mountain range in Orxeta by helicopter last weekend. The family – two adults and a seven-year-old boy - had been on an excursion in the mountain range and became disoriented trying to find their way back down. The family began their descent down to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain at around 9.00am and finally, after many hours of confusion, called the emergency services at around 3.00pm. A helicopter was dispatched as well as two fire engines from Benidorm. The helicopter located the family and transferred them to the parking lot - they were unharmed and required no medical assistance.

Progress for Monte Pego’s Official Residents Association

About A year ago, the Asociacion de Vecinos de la Montana de Pego (AVMP), Monte Pego’s official Residents Association noticed that the Monte Pego sewage treatment plant was spilling what appeared to be insufficiently treated sewage. the spill went directly into the the barranc de batlle and floated toward the River Riu Riaxo beyond the CV-700. there it would potentially contaminate the waterways of the adjacent rice fields and the Marjal nature reserve. After being passed from pillar to post in trying to stop the spill, the AVMP held a conference with the local press at the Casa de Cultura in Pego some two weeks ago. the conference attracted much attention and the AVMP vowed it would not stop in its pursuit of resolving the sewage spill, ‘we will continue to bring this problem to the attention of the public at large and its political representatives, hoping that the value of living in a healthy environment prevails.’ Within 24 hours of the conference, the spill was stopped by a service company and the developer of Monte Pego’s lawyer was quick to notify the AVMP and the local press that the responsibility for the spill does, in fact, fall within Pego Ayuntamiento’s remit. Pego Ayuntamiento is responsible for the maintenance of the plant as well as damages it has caused to the adjacent environment. the AVMP have now requested the legal viewpoint of Pego Ayuntamiento and will bring it to the attention of residents on Monte Pego and the public at large in due course.

Balearic Islands vote for bloodless bullfights

The Balearic islands voted on Monday to pass a law that forbids both the death of the bull or any bloodshed in bullfights. A trAditionAl bullfight sees six bulls killed in a bullring by being stabbed by a matador's sword through the back, after the animals have previously been weakened in a ritual which sees them first stabbed in the shoulders by a picador's lance and then to have six short spears (‘bandelleras’) stuck into their back. the new law forbids the bull's death in the bullring, as well as any physical or psychological damage, forbidding the use of ‘bandelleras, lances, knives or swords,’ while limiting the time a bull is in the ring to a maximum of ten minutes after which ‘it will be returned to the corral.’ Under the Balearics new law, the bull will be submitted for a medical check-up after the fight and then returned to the ranch from where it was raised. the new law was passed with the approval of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSoE), left wing party Podemos and regional party Mes Mallorca, but was opposed by the right-wing People's Party and centreright formation Ciudadanos. the minimum age for attending a bullfight was also raised from 16 to 18 under the new law. Bullfighting has already been banned completely in the Catalan region in northeast Spain and in the Canary islands and is generally seen as losing popularity among the younger generation of Spaniards. nevertheless, it is still the subject of bitter debate among those who view it as a Spanish cultural tradition and those who consider it a cruel aberration which has no place in a modern nation.

Denia pays tribute to victims of The Great Gypsy Round-up

Filming figures in Benidorm increase by 50 per cent Benidorm Film oFFice (BFo), the city’s municipal office for filming released its figures for the first half of 2017 last week. The city’s streets have become a popular backdrop for hundreds of productions, the most sought-after areas being mirador de la cruz, Paseo de Poniente, calle dos calas and calle Gerona. Filming figures in Benidorm have seen a huge increase as the city becomes one of the most active audio-visual production destinations in Spain. Figures for the first half of 2017 were up 47 per cent on the first half of 2016 with most filming taking place in the months of may and June. in June this year, four productions were being filmed on one day. municipal officials attribute this to the coordination and professionalism of the different municipal departments involved – who respond to the needs of the producers, whether the filming be for an advertisement or feature film.

by Tahnee Wright The CiTy of Denia and the Federacion Autonomica de Asociaciones Gitanas (FAGA) of the Valencian Community paid tribute last week to the victims of The Great Gypsy Round-up (Gran Redada de Gitanos). The Great Gypsy Round-up was a raid approved by the King Ferdinand Vi of Spain and organised by his minister, the Marquis of ensenada that led to the arrest of all gypsies (Romani) in the region and their imprisonment in labour camps – one of the main labour camps being inside Denia castle. The raid was set in motion simultaneously across Spain on July 30, 1749 with the aim of ‘arresting and finally extinguishing all the gypsies in Spain.’ Between 9,000 and 12,000 people of all ages were arrested that night. The gypsies arrested in the Valencian community and the surrounding provinces received different treatment according to their age and gender: men, boys and children over 7 years old were sent to Santa Barbara castle in Alicante, while women, girls and children under 7 years of age were imprisoned inside Denia Castle. Last Thursday, representatives of FAGA joined staff from the Ayuntamiento at the tribute which was led by Denia Mayor Vicent Grimalt before moving on to Denia castle where historian Martinez Martinez gave a presentation.

Javea collaborates with the Red Cross

The CiTy of Javea has renewed its collaboration agreement with the Red Cross. Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi signed the €22,500 agreement earlier this week as Javea once again demonstrates municipal dedication to the Red Cross as it develops programmes to support and improve the lives of the elderly, offers assistance to immigrants, prevents drug addiction and works with those at risk of social exclusion. The mayor also signed a €8,550 agreement with Club de Tenis Xabia and a €4,000 agreement with Meridia Zero, an association dedicated to the dissemination of science and technology amongst citizens, through conferences, debates and culture.

Minimum pre-test driving lessons proposed ACCORDING tO Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGt), a minimum number of driving lessons may be introduced as a legal requirement before candidates can take a test. this would include the theory test as well as the practical, meaning it would no longer be solely down to the student whether they felt they were adequately prepared to take the tests. the idea is to partly prevent a selection of inexperienced drivers who are supremely confident that they can have a good day and pass the tests, but in truth aren’t ready to face the realities of day-to-day driving. the exact minimum number of lessons which will apply has not yet been decided.

Morning snackers arrested A GROUP of four Spanish tourists could be facing a jail term after breaking into a cafe in Thailand. They were charged with stealing bread and Coca-Cola from the unit in Chiang Mai in the early hours of the morning around 4.00am. The group, all in their early 20s, were arrested at their hostel hours later and said to be ‘quite drunk’ at the time.

by Tahnee Wright A mAn was detained on Tuesday after attempting to cross the border between morocco and the Spanish enclave of melilla while threatening police with a knife. The man, believed to be moroccan, approached the border at Beni Enzar at 7.35am and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is Greatest) before he was brought down by police. One police officer was cut on the hand during the incident. CCTV footage shows the man, dressed in a blue shirt and white shorts, walking across the border, waving the knife.

Spanish police keep their distance before one officer runs up behind him and knocks him to the ground by striking him on the head with a white traffic bollard. Once felled, the man is tackled by several police and detained. Interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said on Twitter: ‘The rapid, coordinated and professional conduct of the police has avoided a serious incident in Beni Enzar. All my support to the hurt officer.’ melilla and its sister city Ceuta are two Spanish territories located on morocco's northern coast and as such represent the only two land borders be-

They have been hit by unrest before as migrants desperate to reach Europe regularly storm the border between both territories or try and smuggle themselves in, but this is the first attack of this type. Spain has been spared the type of jihadist violence that has occurred in nearby Belgium, France and Germany. But it was hit by what is still Europe's deadliest jihadist attack in march 2004, when bombs exploded on commuter trains in madrid, killing 191 people in an attack claimed by Al Qaeda-inspired militants.

Renfe train strike

ANY plANs to travel by train today (Friday) using the services of RENFE will be best put on hold for another time. The spanish train company has cancelled 274 services between midnight and 11.00pm due to the strike called by members of the OGT trade union. However, there will be trains running on all routes but with severe disruptions and delays especially with the usual weekend getaways. It’s planned to have 77% of trains running on the AVE and other long distance routes accounting for 277 trains. At a regional level, fewer trains – 365 or 65% of the usual total – will run. For the vital rush hour, 75% of local trains will operate with that figure dropping to around 50% during the rest of the day. Freight trains will be those most affected with only a 20% skeleton service running. RENFE has already offered passengers affected by the strike and have previously reserved seats to book them, if possible, on the nearest service to the one booked. If they have made a decision not to travel at all today, then full refunds or the chance to change their time and date and travel can be made free of charge.

Open Letter to UK Citizens Living in Spain, from Her Majesty’s Ambassador Simon Manley Given the success of the Spanish State visit to the UK the week before last, which, among other things, highlighted the importance of people to people links between our two countries, i thought it timely to return to the subject of citizens’ rights in the negotiations on our departure from and future partnership with the eU. in the year since the eU referendum, i’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you across the country, from the Balearics to the Canaries, along the Costas and in Madrid, and our consular teams have met many more. i know from those conversations that there has been uncertainty for many of you. My teams and i have listened to your concerns about the future, including about your residency status in Spain, the level of your UK pensions, and your access to Spanish health and other social services, and have noted the questions you have about tax, inheritance, right to work and the implications of applying for Spanish nationality. At our meetings, on our social media and in interviews, i have also pledged to keep you up to date as negotiations on our exit from the european Union continue. So, let me update you on where matters stand now, in light of the latest negotiation round in Brussels last week. the UK Government has been clear that citizens are our top priority in the exit negotiations. We want an agreement that provides citizens with greater certainty about their future. Last week, we held constructive and substantive discussions with the european Commission on the bulk of the issues underpinning our respective positions on citizens’ rights. together we have taken a big step forward. there is a much clearer understanding on the detail of the positions on both sides and significant convergence on the key issues that really matter to citizens. it is clear both sides want to move towards an agreement. As you know, on 26 June, the Prime Minister outlined to Parliament an offer to protect the rights of eU citizens in the UK. We are entering the negotiations with the european Commission and the other 27 eU Member States constructively and we therefore hope that the eU27 will offer reciprocal treatment for British nationals resident in the other Member States. Many of you will have seen press reports of our 26 June offer, whether in the UK or Spanish media. i hope you will also have read the detailed proposals which are set out in “Safeguarding the position of eU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the eU” and i would encourage you to sign-up for email alerts (you can do so on the home Office gov. uk page) to receive updates, to ensure that you are receiving information and guidance from official sources. the first key element of the new proposal is residence status and working rights. Until the UK’s exit, eU citizens in the UK will continue to enjoy all the rights they currently have under eU law; they can continue to live and work in the UK just as they do now. the same rights also apply to you, British residents in Spain. You can continue to live and work here in Spain as you always have done. After the UK’s exit from the eU, we are proposing a recipro-

cal deal that would protect the right of UK nationals already in the eU to continue to live and work in the eU. We hope that the european Commission and the 27 other Member States will agree to this. the second key element is healthcare, pensions, education and access to benefits. it is our intention to treat eU citizens with settled status in the UK in the same way as if they were UK citizens for the purposes of access to education, benefits and pensions. For you, the Government has announced that the UK will continue to export and uprate the UK State Pension and provide associated healthcare cover within the eU, issues which i know from my conversations over the last year were important to many of you. At the moment, those of you who are UK pensioners and resident in Spain access healthcare through the S1 form. this means the UK reimburses Spain the cost of providing medical treatment. After the UK leaves the eU, we want to continue your healthcare entitlements on the same basis. healthcare in Spain was indeed one of the case studies cited in the detailed proposals made by the British Government on 26 June. Subject to negotiations, we want to continue participating in the european health insurance Card scheme meaning ehiC holders continue to benefit from free, or reduced-cost, needs-arising healthcare while on a temporary stay in the eU — and vice versa for eU ehiC holders visiting the UK. We hope the european Commission will agree to this. the British Government has repeatedly said that, until exit negotiations are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the european Union and all the rights and obligations of eU membership remain in force. You can continue travelling throughout the eU on your UK passport, without any visa requirements. Diana, the first wife of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash in Paris in august 1997 and a number of commemorative events have been planned to mark her death. William and Harry attended a private service earlier this month to re-dedicate her grave on what would have been her 56th birthday. The brothers have also commissioned a

statue to be erected in her honour outside their official London home. among the possessions to be featured in the display are a leather photo frame with pictures of family and friends, a burgundy leather briefcase, and her school ‘tuck box’, which she used to keep sweets and other treats in while she was away at boarding school, which has the name ‘D spencer’ written on it. The tribute also includes a case of cas-

sette tapes, featuring albums by artists such as George Michael, Diana Ross and elton John, who famously sang at her funeral. The exhibition opened last saturday and visitors to the palace will also be able to see a collection of more than 200 gifts made to Queen elizabeth during her 65year reign including a paperweight made from a dinosaur bone and a Union Flag badge worn in space by British astronaut Major Tim Peake.

Hundreds of sheep killed in 650-foot plunge to death by Staff Reporter A brown bear is believed to have chased more than 200 sheep off a cliff in the Pyrenees near the border between France and Spain. 209 sheep were found dead at the foot of the cliff near the Spanish village of Lladorre. The sheep belonged to a farmer in Couflens, France. The incident happened last weekend when the bear attacked one of the sheep, sending the entire flock into a panicked frenzy, plunging off the 650foot (200 metre) cliff in an attempt to flee the predator. Farmers have been incensed by the news, renewing the debate over the reintroduction of bears to the Pyrenees. The French government said it’ll compensate the farmer, but the local branch of the French farmers’ federation, the Confederation Paysanne de l’Ariege, is thoroughly unimpressed. ‘Pastoralism - which protects biodiversity and keeps the mountains alive - is not compatible with the reintroduction of large predators,’ it said in a statement. ‘The state, which is responsible for the reintroduction of the bears, should remove the ones that are causing prob-

lems and should not reintroduce any more bears,’ it added. brown bears were all but wiped out by hunters in the Pyrenees in the 1990s and the French government has been trying to reintroduce the animals to the region since 1996-97 when two females and a male were brought from Slovenia. There are now believed to be 35 brown bears calling this picturesque mountainous region their home. Despite protective efforts, around

300 sheep are killed each year from bear attacks, according to France’s office of Hunting and wildlife. For context, of the half a millionsheep living in the Pyrenees, about 15,000 die each year from natural causes such as disease, bad weather and falls. Sheep are also preyed upon by dogs, who may be responsible for many more sheep deaths than bears. Last year, a similar incident occurred in the Pyrenees, resulting in the death of 130 sheep.

Hopes for HIV cure revived by South African child

A South AfricAn child born with hiV has surprised experts by appearing to be effectively cured of the AIDS virus after just a year of treatment followed by eight and a half years drug-free. Patients with HIV would normally need to stay on antiretroviral (ART) drugs for the rest of their lives to keep AIDS at bay. But this child, still off treatment and now almost 10 years old, has no signs of the disease. This and other recent, isolated cases of remission have given additional hope to the 37 million people worldwide infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Yet experts urged caution, saying the case is extremely rare and does not suggest a simple path to a cure. ‘It's a case that raises more questions than it necessarily answers,’ said Linda-Gail Bekker, president of the International AIDS Society (IAS). The child was part of a clinical trial in which researchers were investigating the effect of treating HIV-positive babies in the first few weeks of life, and then stopping and starting the ART medicines whilst checking whether their HIV was being controlled. The United Nations HIV/AIDS agency said last week that 19.5 million people - more than half of the 37 million patients with HIV - are now on treatment. The baby contracted HIV from its mother. Treatment with ART started when it was almost nine weeks old but was interrupted at 40 weeks when the virus had been suppressed, and the child was monitored regularly for any signs of relapse. ‘At age 9.5 years, the child was clinically asymptomatic,’ the researchers said. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has killed around 35 million people worldwide since it began in the 1980s.

Swedish train will be named ‘Trainy McTrainface’ by Tahnee Wright A SwediSh rail operator has vowed to name one of its trains ‘Trainy McTrainface’ after a public vote, saying it would bring joy to people disappointed when Britain rejected the name Boaty McBoatface for a polar research ship following a similar poll. Trainy McTrainface won 49 per cent of the votes in the naming competition, conducted online by train operator MTR express and Swedish newspaper Metro, beating choices such as hakan, Miriam and Poseidon. ‘(This is) news that will be received with joy by many, not just in Sweden,’ MTR wrote in a statement. The train will run between the Swedish capital Stockholm and the country's second-biggest city Gothenburg. Last year, the British government said a new £200 million (€223 million) polar research ship would be named after veteran BBC naturalist david Attenborough even though the name ‘Boaty McBoatface’ had topped an online poll. The instigator of the Boaty name later apologised for his suggestion, which won more than 124,000 votes. As a consolatory gesture, the research ship's remotely operated undersea vehicle, designed to collect samples from the deep waters of the Arctic and Antarctic, will be named Boaty McBoatface, the government said.

Firefighters called to remove ring Two Benidorm firefighters were called to the aid of an 18year-old girl in Calpe on monday morning who had a ring stuck on her middle finger. The girl had put the ring on last Friday and it was not until two days later, last Sunday, that she began to feel discomfort. She was shocked as she woke up on monday morning to find her finger completely swollen. The ring, being too tight in the heat, had cut off the circulation to her finger. The girl went to the nearest health centre where staff called for assistance from the firefighters as she waited with her hand in ice to reduce the swelling. The firefighters soon arrived at the health centre and were able to remove the ring with pliers.

77-year-old dies on Denia beach A 77-yeAr-old French woman drowned on Monday as she swam in the sea off Les Deveses beach in denia, according to the Information and emergency Coordination Center (CICU). The woman was pulled unconscious from the water at 11.20am near Calle Rio Serpis as yellow flags waved. Lifeguards began CPr which was continued by a team of SAMU medics. As the woman did not respond to CPr, medics ordered a defibrillator from the health centre at Les Deveses. After 10 minutes, the woman was breathing however just seven minutes later she suffered a second cardiac arrest. Medics tried for 45 minutes to resuscitate her again without success.

Female bodyguards support Spanish victims of domestic abuse by Tahnee Wright RepoRts of domestic abuse are rising in many countries - in the european Union, nearly 25 per cent of women say they’ve been physically abused by a partner. A new organisation in spain is providing help to women in crisis. spain has a growing concern. Last year, there were more than 28,000 officially registered female victims of gender violence. A 2.4 per cent increase on the previous year, with many more cases going unreported. ‘Violence against women is the biggest problem in spain at this moment,’ Ana Maria perez del Campo, president of the federation of separated and Divorced Women told CGtN. ‘there is a huge amount of regression in this country. We’re going backwards.’ the increase in domestic abuse for the second year in a row is a real concern for spanish authorities, underlining the desperate situation many women find themselves in.

But there is one group who offers hope. eDeMM is an organization that offers 24hour protection to vulnerable women free of charge. the project was set up by Carolina, a former police bodyguard, who prefers not to reveal her last name. the identities of its staff members are kept confidential. ‘We train bodyguards and provide protection for women when they obtain court orders,’ Carolina told CGtN. ‘We fill in the gaps. We help to enforce restraining orders and provide assurance for women who are afraid to go outside.’ Carolina first set up the project in Bilbao and it now has operations across spain, although funding remains a problem. ‘We want this idea to go international,’ Carolina told CGtN. ‘that’s what we’re working towards, because there are victims all over the world.’ the project is not a solution to the issue of gender violence, but for many women in spain, it has been life changing.

Boots apologises for morning-after pill campaign response BrItIsh PhArmACy chain Boots has apologised for its response to a campaign calling for it to cut the price of one of its morning-after pills and said it was looking for cheaper alternatives. Boots was criticised by health campaigners and lawmakers after refusing to cut the cost of the emergency contraception pill, saying it could be accused of ‘incentivising inappropriate use’. the British Pregnancy Advisory service (BPAs) campaigned for Boots to cut the price of the levonelle morning-after pill, saying it was more expensive in Britain than other parts of Europe. BPAS’s campaign was backed by lawmakers from Britain's opposition Labour Party. Boots said pricing ehC was determined by the cost of the medicine and the cost of pharmacy consultation. ‘We are committed to looking at the sourcing of less expensive EHC medicines, for example generics, to enable us to continue to make a privately funded EHC service even more accessible in the future,’ it said.

World’s oldest captive manatee dies in accident at Florida aquarium Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee in captivity, has died in an accident at a Florida aquarium just days after his 69th birthday, officials said last Sunday. the giant marine mammal was found dead at Bradenton's South Florida Museum early on Sunday. Initial signs were that Snooty swam into a normally closed underwater area housing plumbing for the manatee exhibit and was unable to get out, the museum said in a statement. ‘our initial investigation indicates that Snooty’s death was a heartbreaking accident and we’re all quite devastated about his passing,’ Brynne Anne Besio, the museum’s chief executive, said in a statement. three manatees in the exhibit who are being rehabilitated for a return to the wild were unharmed. the museum said it would carry out a full investigation and a necroscopy would be performed. Snooty was born in a Miami aquarium on July 21, 1948, and moved to Bradenton, a tampa suburb, in 1949. he became the official mascot of Manatee County in 1979 and had more than a million visitors, the statement said. About 5,000 people attended a birthday celebration for Snooty on Saturday, museum officials said. West Indian manatees, also known as sea cows, were taken off U.S. Interior Department's list of endangered species in March. Manatees are native to the Florida coastline and their numbers have soared because of decades of conservation efforts.

For example, always make sure that your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month especially as road surfaces become very hot indeed and will affect the pressures. needless to say, check the tyres too and make sure they are in

good condition with enough tread. also check the car’s radiator water level; the last thing you want is to overheat if you’re stuck in a queue and worse still have to wait for a breakdown truck. it’s also illegal to run out of screen-wash so keep this topped up. Driving with flip-flops or shoes without backs is not permitted either. Obviously seat belts must be worn all round and children need safety harnesses. and stating the obvious too, mobile phones must not be used for speaking (unless using a built-in hands-free device) and definitely no texting! UNDER THE baleful influence of Wall Street and Washington, Europe once again stands at the crossroads of history. A recurring theme, our small continent has faced an uncertain future several times during the last 100 years. In 1917 an American-backed coup d’état delivered Imperial Russia to the West’s corporate and banking elites. Never mind what you are told; follow instead the trail of the Tsar’s disappearing gold and fate of 184 million Russians through the Wall Street financed Gulag Archipelago. In 1918, the Great War, described by Field-Marshal Allenby as “a lengthy period of general insanity,” drew to a close. So did the lives and limbs of 41 million martyrs to political vanities. The ‘Bore War’ of 1939 escalated into world war in June 1940 when Germany’s peace proposals were snubbed. This calamity resulted in the martyrdom of at least 50 million mostly European peoples. Never mind what we are told by the victors; at Yalta in February 1945, the war to ‘defend our freedoms’ delivered 22 nations to Joe Stalin’s tyrannical USSR. These nations occupation was to drag on for a further 45 years. Ironically, one of these betrayed nations was Poland whose occupation started the war. In 1949 the guilty parties suggested that we join hands under the protective umbrella of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Since then, an estimated 35 million people have been martyred to NATO ambitions. The USSR, drooled over as allies, in 1955 formed their rival Warsaw Pact. Governed from Moscow both the Warsaw Pact and the Eastern Bloc collapsed in 1990. Today, the European Union’s governing, banking, media, foreign policy and defence requirements are governed by Wall Street, Washington DC and the Pentagon’s talking heads. In 2010 I predicted that the EU would follow the Soviet Bloc into the dustbin of history. My words are

today echoed by many of the political elite. I was ridiculed for predicting the end of American omnipotence, but they’re not laughing now. Perhaps on this occasion we Europeans can get it right. Might I suggest we follow pragmatic examples set by China, Belarus, India, Iran, Syria, and the pivoting Middle East? For safety in numbers we welcome realpolitik by becoming a peaceful trading partner rather than belligerent rivals to these other nations. By a single revolution in thought we remove the

shadow of war, divert arms and munitions expenditure to social needs, and look forward to a mutually beneficial trading partnership with a trading bloc that we cannot hope to rival anyway. This is the one outcome that keeps Wall Street, Washington DC the Pentagon and U.S arms conglomerates sleepless nights. Such a bloc would put the final nail in the coffin of American dollar imperialism. You decide; do you want to be a living European or a dead American.

Hair today gone tomorrow When I was a kid, I was blessed with a mop of almost white blond hair. I say blessed, but as a young boy growing up in the 50’s, hair was not something you thought that much about, until the time came around when Mum sent me off to Fred Lester the local barber, for a harsh trim. The attention from female neighbours was certainly not welcome when they would comment to my Mum on those white golden locks, and my cheeks would flush with embarrassment. If it became just a little too long and a visit to the barber shop was overdue, the unfortunate effect was that it would start to curl making the situation worse and attracting comments likening me to the hollywood child star, Shirley Temple. Luckily the order of the day was short back and sides. Then the Swingin’ Sixties rolled around and long hair became fashionable. Problem for me was the curly question. All the pop idols of the day from the Stones to the inappropriately named Pretty Things, sported outrageously long hair. even the Beatles, whose hairstyles look fairly moderate today, had styles that were regarded as long by previous standards. But the one thing they all had in common was straight hair, and I was constantly looking for ways to take the kinks out of my own unruly barnet. I wanted to look like John Lennon or Keith Richards, not Louise XIV.

Then in the seventies I came into my own and for some reason curls were in and became part of the glam rock boom. hey, if it was good enough for the likes of Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, then it was good enough for me. Out of sight man. I was hip and I was cooool! Today, even though my body takes five hour lunch breaks, and I cannot remember where I put my underpants (oh, I’ve got them on), I am pleased to report that my hair is intact, and the envy of my contemporaries. Okay, there’s almost as much in my nostrils and ears these days, but you can’t have it all. I recently located a follically impaired buddy from my 70’s days through the magic of Facebook, and he was delighted to have re-connected, even though in his words: ‘You spent the seventies looking like a yak’s backside’. envy. Such an unattractive trait in a person I always think.

I arrIved in Berlin in January 1960 at the height of winter, as a young journalist this was to be my home for the next couple of years. The following day I was introduced to a man who was going to shape my life, his name was ernesto Krieg originally a son of a German diplomat who had retired from his post in Caracas, venezuela, and stayed on as a business representative for a German company, however he died in the late fifties, ernesto was born in 1925 and spent all his informative life in Caracas. When we met on a bitterly cold day in Berlin, he shook my hand welcoming me in the typical German formal way by calling me Herr Mann, however he soon dropped the formality and we became good friends using first name’s. It was a known fact that journalists are quite free to roam almost anywhere with the right type of credentials and a bit of nous, many had either been inducted by their countries so called secret Government organisations to spy or provide information, in several cases many journalists had even volunteered, the man that arranged my time in Berlin was a Major (I cannot use his name even though he is dead) son of a former Hungarian immigrant who managed a Press agency in London’s Fleet street in the 1950s the home of the British Newspapers and Press agencies. Within a few days and several meetings with officers from the French, american and British representatives and putting me through certain instructions, and how I could use my excellent knowledge of cameras, one in particular that I had made was miniature camera that was hidden in a hollowed out book with a tiny hole for the lens, and also my knowledge of electrical technology, ernesto and myself started to go to work. ernesto hated his German ancestry, his great love was venezuela, its life style, its people, so probing the infrastructure in eastern Berlin and east Germany was like manner from heaven for him. Within days of my instructors putting me through rigorous training, we started to make daily journey’s through Check Point Charlie, our papers were checked by the american authority’s on the West side, the barrier was lifted and we negotiated our way through tank traps into no man’s land, we parked the car within the russian/east German sector and walked into the large hut, escorted by two volks Politzie or vo Po’s as they were called, showing our credentials and body searched, if we were lucky we could continue, however sometimes to make our crossing difficult we would be grilled and searched again and again. Once you were free to go, we drove in a zig zag again through the russian tank traps, a barrier was finally lifted and we could eventually cross into east Berlin, with a sigh of relief. during our forays into east Berlin and east Germany sometimes as far as Leipzig, we could meet friends and contacts made by various methods, there was not any internet or mobile phones, the people we would see could be helpful to the West, we could also see at first hand the preparations for escape routes for people who had particularly good knowledge of russian armaments and rocket science. all this just two years before Nikita Khrushchev, launched his ships laden with missiles heading for

Cuba, causing the world to be within days of an all-out war between america and russia. So that’s all I can say on the subject of the years ernesto and myself had spent delving and prying into what went on behind the barbed wire, until the wall was finally built by the east Germans to keep their people entombed, but it still allowed us to continue our visits through Check Point Charlie. My great friend ernesto would be turning in his grave if he knew what was going on in his beloved venezuela, at this present time if ever a county had imploded into chaos murder and financial ruin venezuela has, particularly the capital. Caracas is now packed with tanks, armoured personal carriers, thousands of soldiers and police with guns roam the streets, the shop counters are empty, and the street are covered in blood. When the late Hugo Chavez took power in 1999, the country was awash with oil when the charge was $100 dollars a barrel, with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, an investor’s dream, the country has some of the finest beaches and the wonderful snow-capped andes. Hugo Chavez reign brought wealth to venezuela, more schools for children, greater access to drinking water and plenty of food in the shops, people said that the country was a paradise, a complete utopia, but his leftish politics became a major thorn in the side of america. Now Nicholas Maduro the president of venezuela has driven venezuela in the opposite direction, with a huge shortage of food in the supermarkets, shortage of medicines, rolling blackouts, rising unemployment, increased violence in the streets, even malaria once almost eradicated is back. The IMF says that venezuela has a negative growth of (-8%) and an inflation rate of (48%) unemployment is expected to climb

to (30%) all this has cast a shadow of desperation the spread of unrest and a surge in criminality. after months of rioting venezuela is heading to the brink, this has worried neighbouring countries, his once opposition Henrique Capriles has been banned from running for any political office for 15 years. The new opposition leader is Freddy Guevara who has called for further 24 hour strikes, while hundreds have been killed in the demonstration. anti-Government lawyers accuse Maduro of being responsible for drug running and emptying the government coffers, and stealing the gold reserves. In 2011 venezuela had $30b reserves now they have less than $10b, and their imports are down 50%. The oil production has ceased to a trickle owing to strikes. With rising prices, many people unable to eat and the millions that are demonstrating on the streets, the once great country of venezuela is a paradise lost?

Until recently i was very passionate about what was happening in the UK, but sadly i feel myself becoming increasingly disinterested but at the same time, very concerned. Day after day, we hear nothing else but Brexit, Brexit, Brexit and confusion appears to surround the talks as it is still unknown what the UK is seeking and the EU negotiators seem to be a very hard bunch, and of course, at the end of the talks with Brussels there are the 27 other countries who need to agree. This could take years. Months have passed, Sterling is suffering very badly, inflation is increasing, as well as costs, especially food. This is just the beginning, and as the old saying goes “be careful what you ask for”. I honestly feel that the reality of coming out of the EU is far harsher and more dangerous than the ideology behind it. Often, what we have is pretty good and what we end up with can be a nightmare. It does not help that apart from the Guardian newspaper, the press seem to fully support Brexit. I also am noticing more and more, an anger in the UK that worries me. What is happening to people? It appears to be a very divided nation with no one strong enough to pull it all together. The country needs a strong, sensible, honest, street-wise person with sensitivity – please send your CV to ….. Recently I listened to a programme on the compensation culture in the UK. Once again, I am appalled by what is happening and I understand the Spanish, especially in areas like Benidorm, are becoming

increasingly angry and hostile regarding claims being made by British tourists on their return home claiming they have suffered badly from food poisoning. Last year the EU brought in a ruling that insurance premiums would need to be increased to be able to compensate for the vast increase in claims, particularly for whip lash. In the UK 11% was added, whilst Spain increased the premiums by 8.9%. When I see the advertisements on British television regarding house and car insurance policies, I am concerned that people will assume that the equivalent polices in Spain are exactly the same. They are not! For example, there is no need to join an independent recovery service, as Spain has the benefit of the excellent grua service which is part of your policy. They will try and repair the vehicle roadside, and if this is not possible a decision will be taken to take your car to a garage, either in the area of the break down, or to the relevant garage in your area. Remember, it is illegal to tow a vehicle in Spain. Depending on where you break down, you could be offered either a taxi or a hotel. Please remember that not all insurance companies offer

free mileage via the grua, and this can become very expensive, if you are not fully covered. Also, if entitled, you will be offered a courtesy car. Spanish insurance has another marvellous system. Every policy has a small Consortio tax. This tax is payable to the government, with a specialised department which handles all the claims from an area which has been deemed a “disaster”, usually due to severe weather. Why the UK doesn´t introduce this very simple but effective method is a mystery to me. It would help so much, especially when dealing with flooding. I often see advertisements claiming cover for earthquakes, which of course if over 6.4 on the Richter scale are covered by the Consortio. However, when small earth tremors occur and damage is suffered by either the house or the contents, which often happens in Spain, you will need Accidental Cover to protect yourself and your home. Let me assure you that there are very few insurance companies that offer this Accidental Cover, but Liberty Seguros does. Prefiero, para Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

At the end of last week’s article I gave you some homework. In fact, there was rather a lot, but I hope you had a go at least! here are the answers: Translate into English No puedo firmar hoy. I can’t sign today. ¿Quieres visitar a tu amigo? Do you want to visit your friend? No necesito correr. I don’t need to run. Me gusta hacer los deberes. I like doing homework. No voy a leer todo el libro. I’m not going to read all the book. Translate into Spanish Do you want to have a lot of money? ¿Quieres tener mucho dinero? I like watching the news. Me gusta ver las noticias (or “el telediario”) I can’t drink and drive. No puedo beber y conducir. Are you going to write a letter? ¿Vas a escribir una carta? I need to go to the chemist. Necesito ir a la farmacia. Today we are going to learn a couple of ways in which these sentences can be made even longer, whilst at the same time giving us the opportunity to

express more interesting ideas. Firstly, we are going to look at one more “first person” word, which is prefiero. Prefiero means “I prefer”. Of course we can only use “I prefer” in a sentence if we are contrasting one idea with another. For example, let’s take one of our homework sentences: “I don’t like going out much.” It’s easy to see how we can extend this idea with the contrast of what we do like doing: “I don’t like going out much; I prefer … to stay at home.” We can use words we have already learnt to express this, by changing “stay” to “be”, like this: “No me gusta salir mucho; prefiero estar en casa” (i.e. I prefer to be at home). Let’s try another one: “I don’t need to run; I prefer to walk.” “No necesito correr; prefiero andar”. What about this one: “I’m not going to read everything; I prefer to listen ”No voy a leer todo; prefiero escuchar”. We don’t always need to change the main verb in these sentences, we might want to change other information. For example: “No quiero ir a Murcia, prefiero ir a Elche” (I don’t want to go to Murcia, I prefer to go to Elche.” “No voy a comprar un vestido; prefiero comprar pantalones” (I’m not going to buy a dress; I prefer to buy trousers.”) And now for the second way we can extend our sentences – and this really is exciting! We can use the word para to explain our purpose in during

something. The way we are going to use para it means “to” in the sense of “in order to”. Some of you might already know this word as meaning “for” as in “para mí” (for me). However many of the “little words” in Spanish have more than one meaning, as is the case with para. The great thing as well is that after para we can still use our verbs in the infinitive form. Let’s get straight on to an example of what I’m talking about, again using our homework as a starting point: Me gusta ver las noticias para aprender más español. I like watching the news to learn more Spanish (in order to learn more Spanish). If that isn’t abundantly clear, see if you can get this one: Voy a ir a Inglaterra para visitar a mi familia. (I’m going to go to England to (in order to) visit my family. We’re running out of space now and I think we need to spend a bit more time on this next week, so in the meantime, what do these sentences mean in English? Necesito firmar esto para comprar mi casa. Voy a volver a casa para ver el fútbol. Quiero aprender español para hablar con mi vecino.

Javea Head smashes 60km Iceland trek Raises oveR €1,500 for Christian aid.

Last month Rtn told the story of Fiona Phillips - head of secondary at Xabia International College who, together with her sister Janette, took on the tough 3-day 60km ‘Icelandic Lava trek’ from Landmannalaugar to thorsmork earlier this month. the trek led Fiona and Janette through one of the planet’s most volcanic regions and held a special place in their hearts as they set about the challenge in memory of their mother, who went to Iceland in 1980. Catching up with Fiona as she returned to Javea, she reported that although she was often out of her comfort zone, it was an ‘amazing experience’ she will never forget: ‘It was an amazing experience! to be in a far corner of Europe amidst such wild and stunning scenery was something I'll never forget - crossing volcanic lava fields, passing steaming geysers, tumbling waterfalls, with tough ascents and descents often in snow, then traversing fastflowing freezing rivers up to knee-height, all made for a very challenging 3-day 60km trek!’

‘I was often out of my comfort zone, with aching muscles and blisters my main problems, though having to pitch tent in freezing wind and rain at the end of the day was also a challenge! at least the food was plentiful and nutritious - porridge each morning, plenty of snack stops en route and a hearty meal each evening kept us going.’ ‘Quite an emotional moment when my sister Janette and I finally completed the trek and there were many times when we thought of our mum, our inspiration for this trip. all the 21 participants were raising money for a charity close to their hearts, so there was plenty of motivation and determination from us all!’ ‘a couple of days in Reykjavik to wind down, bathe in the Blue Lagoon and see some of the spectacular sights nearby brought our adventure to an end.’ When asked if she would take on a similar challenge in the near future, Fiona stopped to think and said: ‘I'm enjoying lying by my pool for the moment!’

Fiona and Janette’s mother worked tirelessly for Christian aid and Fiona has raised an outstanding €1,505 in sponsorship for the charity. Christian aid has fought poverty for more than 75 years, working to support sustainable development, stop poverty, support civil society and provide disaster relief in south america, the Caribbean, the middle East, africa and asia. News from APAC Caballos aPaC volunTeeRs had a busy weekend last weekend as they rescued a mare and her pony from private land in Gandia. all the animals kept on the private land, including several dogs were severely neglected – with no vet treatment, very little food and no water in temperatures that have reached nearly 40° in recent weeks. The rescued mare has melanoma, an abscess on her neck and at least two of her feet are infected. The pony is in slightly better condition. The local protectora had been doing all they could for the animals on the private land since their conditions were first denounced to seprona. aPaC stress that anyone who happens to find animals neglected and in poor condition should FiRsT make a DenunCia to seprona – this way, the local protectora can get involved and start helping the animal/s as soon as possible. exhibition – works by Jenny anne Morrison l’om Bar & Restaurant on Calle Ramon y Cajal in Pego will play host to an exhibition in november as local artist Jenny anne Morrison presents her works. OwNeRs sAm, from south London who was working for marks & spencer and Jane, from essex who was working for Royal mail had been planning on opening a business in the UK when they spent a week in Benidorm for sam’s 40th and fell in love with the sun, sea and sand. The UK business plans were aborted as the ladies spent six months searching for their ‘place in the sun’, winding up in Albir as Colours Café Bar was born. CBYA summer regatta The CosTa BlanCa YaChT assoCiaTion (CBYa) held its annual summer Regatta recently as teams took to the waters in Calpe. a total of four teams competed in this year’s edition on the 8.5 metre RCnC-owned ToMs racing yachts. The regatta mixed sailing novices with sailors who are only novices on ToMs, novices with spinnakers and experienced, highly-skilled racers. The competition proved to be fun-filled and provided many learning opportunities for all, whatever the experience level. The ToMs graced the waters with their full spinnakers of red and white in a downwind sail to the marks and a quick sail change brought out the jib and main sails for tacking and gybing through various sailing manoeuvres throughout the race. The CBYa participates in regular regattas along the Costa Blanca throughout the year using both the ToMs and larger cruising yachts. There are activities organised at les Basettes (hobie Cats and kayaks), cruiser charters out of Denia, as well as social raft-ups around Javea bay when motor craft are welcome to join in the fun. Whether you are an experienced sailor, or wanting to learn, there are plenty of opportunities to hone your skills. a nautical lecture is held once a month along with various other social events. Members meet on the third Monday evening of each month at the Club nautico de Javea. Giving4Giving help stroke patient home for treatment GiviNG4GiviNG wAs saddened to learn of the struggles of long time Costa Blanca resident and famed Benidorm DJ Paul Kinsley recently. Paul, ex-serviceman with the RAF, suffered several debilitating strokes and was in a nursing home in La Nucia. without the funds to return to the UK for treatment, Paul’s options were limited but friends soon rallied round to organise a charity fundraiser at the Arena Blanca campsite in Benidorm. Learning of the charity fundraiser and Paul’s condition, Giving4Giving were delighted to donate €1,000 for Paul to return to the UK for treatment. Giving4Giving is a leading local charity organisation, hosting numerous fund raising events throughout the year to raise funds for those who need it most, whilst also running 3 charity shops in La Nucia and 2 in Altea, along with a charity auction house in La Nucia where donations are always welcome. Busy Bees raise over 100,000€ for local children and abused women

Wayne (Levi) and Des opened the charity along with friends in 2016 with help from locals and holiday makers alike. We look after local children in care (all nationalities) both orphaned and abused children, and women who are victims of domestic violence (our aim with these ladies is to re-educate, train in employment and build their self-esteem giving them back their independence. We are in constant need of everyday items such as clothing, underwear, socks, shoes and trainers. The children are also in need of anything a child would use during their daily schooling; pens, pencils, stationary, school bags etc. as well as all the fun items a child enjoys. L LAST MONdAy, the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi played host to the monthly general meeting of the U3A Marina Baixa. 135 members attended the meeting, including four new members. Following the meeting, David Larkin spoke about how he recently traced a long-lost relative – who went missing for over 50 years. during the period she was missing, david’s relative worked for the Royal Family. Members then enjoyed lunch at Pizzeria Rustica in Albir. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month in the auditorium at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. doors open at 10.00am and the registration desk closes at 10.50am for a prompt 11.00 am start. In Britain, the brew from green olive leaves was also used for aiding the sick returning from tropical colonies. Decades later, it is believed by scientists that the oleuropein substance, contained in the olive leaves was indeed responsible for the treatments and cures. oleuropein is active against bacteria and insect pests, thus protecting the olive tree. this property has also been found to help protect humans too. European researchers discovered that oleuropein was effective at lowering blood pressure as well as increasing blood flow. Another olive leaf benefit is its positive effects on brain function. Studies show that oleuropein reduces the symptoms or occurrence of age-related disorders, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. the olive leaf has antiviral properties, giving it the ability to prevent the common cold as well as treat dangerous viruses. Research shows that olive leaf extracts effectively fight against a number of disease-causing microbes, including some of viruses that cause influenza and other respiratory infections. the powerful compounds found in olive leaves destroy invading organisms and don’t allow viruses to replicate and cause an infection. Some lemon or honey enhances the flavour; it is excellent chilled and drunk over ice. olive leaf tea leaves can be added to a marinade, especially for fish, or used in a spice rub to season a variety of dishes.

Fibre Fibre helps keep bowel functions normal and is good for your heart. If you need to lose weight, fibre keeps you full longer so you do not feel hungry as often. Healthy ways to avoid a caesarean section Encouraging hEalthy eating and physical activity during pregnancy limits excess weight gain and lowers the odds of having a caesarean section, finds a study published by The British Medical Journal (BMJ). The benefits are consistent, regardless of a woman’s age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI) and underlying medical conditions, suggesting that all women should be given advice on diet and lifestyle as part of routine antenatal care. Both maternal obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy (gestational weight gain) put mother and infant at risk, both in pregnancy and in later life, with considerable costs to the health service and society. Interventions based on diet or physical activity, or both, in pregnancy minimise gestational weight gain, and therefore may have a role in preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes. So researchers from the international Weight Management in Pregnancy (i-WIP) Collaborative Group set out to assess the effects of diet and physical activity based interventions in pregnancy on weight gain and outcomes such as caesarean section, stillbirth and admission to a newborn intensive care unit. Interventions included access to a dietician, specific antenatal classes for advice on diet and lifestyle, or structured exercise of moderate intensity such as aerobics or using a cycling machine. the research team analysed individual participant data from 36 randomised trials involving over 12,500 women, grouped according to age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, body mass index (BMi), and underlying medical conditions. overall, the trials had a low risk of bias. Diet and physical activity based interventions consistently reduced gestational weight gain, regardless of age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, BMi, and existing medical conditions, and remained when studies at high risk of bias were excluded. interventions also lowered the odds of caesarean section, but had no effect on offspring outcomes, such as stillbirth or admission to an intensive care unit. When they included additional study-level data, they found additional benefit for gestational diabetes. the authors outline some study limitations, including the fact that participants were mostly white and of medium to high education status, a factor favouring compliance with interventions. nevertheless, they say their analysis

“confirms that diet and physical activity based interventions in pregnancy reduce gestational weight gain.” And they say discussions about diet and physical activity in pregnancy, which are delivered as part of antenatal care, “should incorporate specific estimates of benefit for caesarean section and gestational weight gain, and the likelihood of preventing gestational diabetes.” Importantly, such interventions in pregnancy “could be considered in global efforts to reduce caesarean section in relevant populations,” they conclude. a linked editorial says this study provides reassuring information for women and healthcare practitioners that lifestyle interventions are safe in pregnancy, and help control weight gain.

HealtHy Fats For weight control and overall health, limit fat calories to 20 percent to 35 percent of your diet. Most of the fats you consume should come from heart-healthy unsaturated fats. try extra-virgin olive oil, canola oil, walnuts, almonds and avocadoes. healthy older men without heart disease should limit saturated fats, which comes from meat, full-fat dairy and fried foods, to 10 percent of total fat calories. Men with high cholesterol need to cut more saturated fat from their diet and should limit it to 7 percent of total fat calories.

A GOOD friend of mine, who enjoys the odd glass of wine early on a summer afternoon, actually just before lunch ……. Well, to be precise, sometime in the morning, has a special term she uses for her favourite alcoholic tipple. “Darling …..” she will often say to me “It’s almost lunchtime, let’s have a lovely glass of day wine!” What she really wants, is a glass of vino rosado, rose wine, cava rose, or whatever you prefer to call that pale or dark pink glass of delight. There’s no doubt that Rose has become very popular in recent years, particularly in our warm Spanish summer, when a couple of ice cubes, thrown into a large wine glass with a few glugs of pink vino rosada is a perfect accompaniment to sunny afternoons in the company of friends. However, there are other ways to use the pink liquid, to brighten up a party, amuse your friends or use up a bottle you haven’t quite finished …… However unlikely that might be. Is all petrol and diesel the same? IT´S A common question that often triggers big arguments. Is branded petrol and diesel better than supermarket fuel, or should you just buy the cheapest you can find? The problem is that most people don’t know how the fuel business works, and the truth is a well-kept trade secret. Premium fuels, such as Shell V-Power Nitro+ and BP Ultimate, are not the same as regular petrol or diesel , although you can mix them freely with standard fuels without problems. Petrol like this is known as ‘super unleaded’. Confusingly, the petrol that is labelled as ‘premium unleaded’ on forecourt pumps is actually standard petrol. When it comes to fuel, super is better than premium!

These ‘super unleaded’ fuels cost several pence per litre more than regular unleaded. For this extra money, you get a different, more sophisticated package of additives for cleaning and lubrication, and fuel with a higher octane rating. It’s a similar story with ‘super’ diesels, like BP Ultimate Diesel. Octane (petrol) and cetane (diesel) ratings describe the way a fuel burns inside an engine. Broadly speaking, a higher rating means a fuel will burn more efficiently and effectively inside your engine. This may improve performance and/or economy slightly – although not all drivers will see a noticeable difference. All fuels sold in the UK conform to the relevant British Standards. This means that they should all work in roughly the same way and you can mix them freely in your car’s fuel tank. The standard petrol and diesel that’s sold on garage forecourts is mixture of two things – Base fuel and an additives package. The base fuel is the same for all companies – in fact, it usually comes from the same tanks at the local fuel refinery/distribution centre. What varies is the additives package that goes into the fuel. These additives packages are secret recipes of extra ingredients that help keep the engine clean and improve lubrication inside the engine cylinders. Each fuel company has its own additives packages and these are different. So it is possible (but not common) for some drivers to feel that their car responds better to the additives used by one fuel manufacturer over those of another.

England hockey boss in health scare DANNY KERRY, the man who masterminded the Great Britain women’s gold medal winning performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics has suffered a heart attack. In news that has only just been made public in a statement by England Hockey, the 46-year-old was taken ill on July 15 during the recent World League Semi-Final being played in South Africa. Mr Kerry still continues to receive treatment in a Johannesburg hospital and is shortly due to fly back to England “for a further period of rest and recovery” and expected to return to work in September. During his absence, the England team took bronze medal place after a 5-2 victory over Argentina at the weekend. “Danny’s health has remained our sole and absolute priority,” said England Hockey performance director Ed Barney. “We wish him the very best over the coming weeks as he continues his recovery.” Kerry expressed his “huge thanks and debt of gratitude” to the doctors who treated him in South Africa, and to England team doctor Cath Lester.
