‘Located and in good condition’ by Tahnee Wright The families of Roberto Palmero and Yanira Jimenez - the 13-year-old couple reported missing in Torrevieja last Friday - were relieved to report them as ‘located and in good condition’ in a post on social media on Tuesday night. The news was greeted with great joy by those who had followed the case with concern for several days. Roberto and Yanira disappeared from their homes in Torrevieja at around 8.00am last Friday and their families reported their disappearance to the Guardia Civil that afternoon. Clues pointed to the couple having run away - Yanira was said to have €500 cash in her possession and both their phones had been turned off. They tried to buy bus tickets to Madrid at Torrevieja bus station, but they were refused for being underage. The families immediately set about distributing ‘MISSING’ posters across Torrevieja and also in several neighbourhoods in Madrid, where Yanira was known having moved to Torrevieja from the capital only a few months ago. As well as distributing the posters, the families spread the word of the couple’s disappearance across social media, encouraging them to come home and promising they were not in trouble. Roberto and Yanira were found wandering the streets of Ciudad de Asis in Alicante by agents of the Operational Response Group. The couple were taken to the police station where they were reunited with their parents.

Flame grilled burgers by Glenn Scott During the middle of the peak of the tourist season, Alicante-Elche Airport was forced to briefly evacuate following a fire in the Burger King fastfood restaurant. Fourteen firefighters from seven appliances rushed to the scene from neighbouring San Vicente and Elche to extinguish the fire that allegedly started in one of fryers due to an accumulation of fat in the extractor system. The popular restaurant will remain closed until a review of both the safety of the premises and its security has been undertaken.

The Guardia Civil have arrested a 49-year old British man for allegedly causing severe injuries to a passerby and failing to provide help afterwards. The injuries were caused by two dogs of an allegedly dangerous breed. A 50-year old Kosovan woman was walking through a park in Urbanisation Ciudad Quesada in Rojales when she was suddenly attacked by the two dogs, which were apparently not on a lead nor wearing muzzles. The dogs, both bull terriers, knocked her over then bit her in the face causing injuries so bad that she required emergency surgery to reconstruct her face. At the time of the incident a man was seen in the park who, rather than stay and help the victim, ran away with the dogs. Investigations by the Guardia Civil found out that the dogs were owned by a British couple who said they knew nothing about what happened as they had paid someone to walk their dogs. A British man was subsequently arrested and charged and is currently on provisional release.

Off-duty life savers
by Glenn Scott Two nurses from the Hospital of Vinalopó, Luis Berenguer and Anna Vicente, who were having a day off and just about to enjoy their evening meal ended up saving the life of a 67-year-old man. The incident happened at around 10.15pm on Saturday night in the popular L’Aljub centre in Elche when the man suffered a heart attack. Not only was the victim lucky that there were two members of the medical profession in close attendance but the fact that the commercial centre had a defibrillator available for them to use. "We were climbing the escalators and we then saw a man lying on his side surrounding by a group of people. We
immediately put him on his back, saw that he wasn’t breathing, and so we started the heart massage”, said Luis, who highlighted the fact that the portable defibrillator was found straight away to help their cause. L'Aljub is believed to be the first commercial centre in the Valencian Community to install this type of device and, according to sources at the busy shopping mall, it was installed in the summer of 2007 and this has been the first time it has been used. After an evaluation of the level of the patient’s consciousness and breathing, which showed no response, cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started, with a sequence of 30 compressions and two ventilations to support the
circulation of the heart. Following just a single charge and several minutes of heart massage undertaken by the nurses, the patient finally managed to regain consciousness and, after being stabilized, was transferred to the hospital by the SAMU ambulance services. The nurse explained: "The man was lucky that we were there, because after a cardiac arrest time counts: every minute after that happens the chance of it being restarted is reduced by 10%.” After the man was taken to hospital, who is expected to make a full recovery, nurses Luis and Anna were finally able to resume their dinner knowing they’d saved the life of one of their fellow shoppers.

Tabarca bomb scare
by Glenn Scott The Underwater Special Operations Group (GEAS) of the Guardia Civil has detected an explosive device, possibly a depth charge left over since the days of World War II, in waters near the island of Tabarca off the coast of Alicante and Santa Pola. The object was first spotted by recreational divers who warned the authorities as soon as they surfaced. Once they arrived, it took the GEAS divers a few hours to find
the offending explosive device and took a selection of photographs to correctly identify it. It was found at a depth of 29 metres. After making several checks with the Guardia Civil’s explosives department, it was concluded that it could be a depth charge, used at the end of World War II and possibly dropped by British forces. Until the explosive has been made safe by the Spanish Navy, the area surrounding the location of the charge has been blocked to prevent any future incursions and possible accidents.
Until further notice, no boats are allowed to pass over the affected zone nor are divers permitted. A service patrol boat and a selection of long-distance cameras will keep watch on the area 24 hours a day until the arrival of the Navy. The device is located around than two miles from the beaches of Tabarca and it has been emphasised by the Guardia Civil that there is no risk to residents and visitors to the island, one of the most popular tourist destinations for many thousands every year.
The heating is turned up high As the third heatwave of the summer hit the Costa Blanca this week, Wednesday night saw the hottest registered in Alicante for two years with the minimum temperature not dropping below 25ºC. San Fulgencio in the south of the region registered 26ºC at 0300 early yesterday (Thursday) morning. Local meteorologists have described the overnight conditions as being ‘equatorial’ which is rather more sultry than tropical; the term used when the mercury doesn’t drop below 20ºC. Such conditions have made sleeping almost impossible unless the air-conditioning is set to ‘bankrupt’ level overnight. Throughout the Alicante province, levels reached shade temperatures of 40ºC in municipalities such as Gaianes, Cocentaina and Benillup. Only one degree lower was experienced in Alcoleja, Alcoy and Villena, 37ºC in Orihuela and a positively coo 34ºC in Elche. Along the coast and with the benefit of whatever breeze there was, the maximum temperatures hovered around the 30ºC mark. However, Alicante suffered from a 80% humidity which negated the effects of the slightly lower heat level. As the month came to a close, Alicante province announced that they had experienced the third hottest June since 1950 with an average temperature reading of 23.3ºC – 2.4ºC above the usual reference point for the area. The other two hot June months were recorded in 2003 and 2012. Rainfall for the month was below the usually expected amount with 22.8 litres per square metre, showing a 9% drop compared to the period between 1981 to 2010 with an average of 25.1 litres / m2. One of the features of June 2017 had been the often fluctuations in temperatures. The first week has been described as ‘fresh’ followed by the period between the 8th and 29th of the month when thermometers began to show the three degrees increase in the average climate. June 17th recorded the highest shade temperature of the month in Barxeta (41ºC).

52 fake crimes in El Carmen The National Police of the El Carmen District Police Station have received a total of 52 fake reports of robbery or robbery with violence so far, this year.
In investigating each report, officers found that the events either did not happen as they were reported to have happened, with victims having manipulated the facts or did not happen at all. In many cases, the sole purpose of the fake reports being to claim compensation on home and contents insurance policies. Of the 52 cases, the complainants have been charged with ‘simulating a crime’ and in some cases, complainants have also been charged with fraud for having been compensated by insurers. The Higher Police Headquarters of the Region of Murcia warns that to fake a crime is, in turn, a crime in itself. It is also detrimental to the police force, allocating personnel and means to investigate crimes that have not actually happened.

Double TRAM delays in Alicante by Glenn Scott Two incidents due to unconnected reasons caused delays on Line 2 of the Alicante TRAM service on Wednesday morning. Both lasted around half an hour and both during the middle of the morning rush hour. The first occurred between the stations of Gastón Castelló and Colonia Santa Isabel early in the morning, when the tram driver noticed that there was a man lying on the platform. The tram stopped at the station where it was discovered that the man was only asleep. However, the local police had been called and the train didn’t leave the station for about 30 minutes. In the second incident which happened around 9.0am, passengers travelling on the tram heading towards the Alicante terminus station at Luceros were also trapped for half an hour, in the dark and without air conditioning, in the tunnel that connects the Marq and Mercado Central stations. An electrical fault had caused the breakdown and, according to the local train authorities (FGV), no evacuation of the passengers took place as there was no platform nearby and it was be-
lieved that the repair would be short. There was a certain amount of panic on the tram, confirmed by one of the passengers José María Hernández who had only just boarded the tram at the Marq Station. “The tram was full of people at that time and we thought that anything could happen to us such as another train hitting us from behind. Thankfully, the train began moving again.” These incidents come in the same week that TRAM, the company that
operates the train service between Alicante and Denia, announced continuing record figures for the month of June. A grand total of 1,142,369 passengers used the five different lines during last month – an increase of 4.7 per cent compared with 12 months ago when 1,090,441 travelled. Line 2, the affected line in the incidents on Wednesday morning, which links Luceros with San Vicente del Raspeig, was the most used with 412,249 passengers.
Betting machines replace traditional Spanish flutters It’s been well known for many decades that whatever the economic fortunes of the country – and they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs in recent years – the Spanish people always find a few euro to have their weekly bet on the wide variety of local and national lotteries. The queues outside the myriad of lottery offices up and down the country regularly confirm that fact. As the dominance of technology has reached into the world of gambling in the past decade, figures released by the Ministry of Finance for the Valencian Community for 2016 show a 5.8% increase in betting machines and a total figure of €292m which in itself is 22% up on the previous year. The significance of that amount is it’s the first time, since the regulation of the market was introduced by the autonomous government in 2011, that this mode of gambling has outstripped the more traditional methods. The Spanish National Blind Organisation (ONCE) tickets account for €225m of gambling revenue with casinos recording €218m. Traditional bingo halls in the community take in €270.3m but if you add the estimated €75m taken via the electronic methods, bingo would come out top of the list. The success of the bingo halls is due in no small part to the increase in the number of younger people that have been attracted to visit such establishments that they now use as regular meeting points. Bingo in Spain isn’t just for ‘old ladies’ with their proud wings! There is also another significant area within the gambling business that is showing strong growth – online gaming. At the national level - there is no local data available – it has reached a staggering amount of almost €11bn which is a sharp increase of 27% compared to 2015, and the upward trend seems unstoppable.
Drowning deaths up 35% in a year According to data released this week from the regional government in Valencia, the numbers of people that have drowned in both beach and swimming pool incidents have increased by 35% in one year. Over the past two year period, the number of those drowning has trebled. To date in 2017, 28 people have lost their lives in the autonomous region with 17 of them in Alicante. The others were from Valencia with 10 and the remaining one from Castellón. The most tragic month so far this year has been June with 16 deaths (59.3%), followed by May with 4; January with 2; March with 2; April with 2; and February with 1. One person has so far drowned in July. Likewise, so far this year there have been 3 drownings of children under three in private swimming pools without supervision. A study of drowning in the Community has shown the profile of the victims to be male (in 82% of recorded drowning deaths), of Spanish nationality (in 68% of cases) older than 35 years (75%), from a beach (57%), unmonitored or unsupervised (86%), and occurring between 0800 and 2000 (75%). Compared with previous years, from January to June 2017 drowning deaths have increased by 35% - with seven more deaths - and have tripled in the last two years with 19 more compared to 2015. Tips for a safer swimming experience 1. Make sure that the pool where you go to with your family has the appropriate safety measures such as a lifeguard in public pools or fencing around the pool in private homes so young children can’t fall in. 2. Remember that the responsibility of young children is down to the parent or guardian. Lifeguards are only on duty in case of emergency. 3. If you can’t swim, always use a life belt of some form when swimming or playing in the water. Inflatable floats are not recommended. 4. Always respect the colour of the flags on the beach. There is a reason the RED ones are flown. 5. Always try to go swimming with somebody else, especially if you are an elderly person or have a health problem. 6. Don’t drink alcohol before swimming. 7. Either in the sea or in a swimming pool do not swim at night.

Guardamar blaze requires evacuation by Glenn Scott Two houses were evacuated late on Wednesday afternoon when a major fire broke out in scrubland close to the Santa Ana industrial estate in Guardamar. The alarm was raised shortly after the fire started just after 3.00pm in an area full of rubbish, appliances and tyres. In total, 21 firefighters came from Torrevieja, AlmoradĂ and Orihuela and fought the blaze which was eventually brought under control just over two and a half hours later. Strong winds in the area hindered the work of the emergency services and the dense column of smoke could be seen for miles away. By 8.00pm, five hours after it started, firefighters formally declared the fire to be completely under control. A hindrance to putting out the fire quicker was the accumulated tons of rubbish that had was on the plot where it broke out and burned for longer than planned, especially the rubber tyres. As the location of the incident was right next to the very busy N-332 in Guardamar, authorities took the decision not to completely close the road in both directions but to give the firefighters enough space shout down the southbound carriageway and enabled alternate traffic on the other side of the road. At the moment the cause of the fire is unknown.

Iberia Airlines fined €25,000 for forcing pregnancy tests
by Tahnee Wright Iberia Airlines has been fined €25,000 by the Ministry of Labour of the Balearic Islands for forcing aspiring flight attendants to take pregnancy tests in what has been ruled as discrimination. Since the fine, the Spanish airline will drop the pregnancy test requirement and will allow flight attendant applicants to decide whether they tell the company if they are expecting. ‘We will no longer include a pregnancy test in the medical examination for new hires,’ said Maria Teresa Garcia Menendez, Iberia's workplace health and safety officer in a statement.
‘We will continue to use all necessary means to ensure the safety and rights of pregnant employees, as we have always done. This is an exemplary company when it comes to hiring women.’ Sources within the ministry told the Spanish press that the practice was discovered last year during a campaign against labour discrimination. Inspectors found that Iberia established a series of criteria for their applicants. Interviews were conducted by external company Randstand, which also asked female applicants to submit pregnancy tests. The measures were put in place to ensure that women were not at risk of
being assigned tasks that could endanger their pregnancy, such as luggage handling, the airline said. It said it has never rejected a qualified candidate for employment on the grounds of pregnancy. ‘Enforcing pregnancy tests as part of recruitment has no place in 2017 and we are pleased that the practice is being reversed,’ said Lee Webster, spokesman for international charity Womankind Worldwide. Women make up 38 percent of the total staff at Iberia and childcare policies, along with reduced working hours, facilitate women's access to work, the airline said.
Three men gored in Pamplona opening run Three men were gored during the opening run of Pamplona's bull-running festival, the Red Cross said last Friday, with one other reported injury during the 875-metre run through the city. One of the men was caught by a bull's horns in the thorax and one in the scrotum, the Red Cross said. All three were taken to hospital for treatment. Two of those gored were from the United States, aged 29 and 35, while the other was a 46-year-old from Navarra in Spain. A man from Ireland, 39, was also hurt. The sprint, which typically attracts about 2,000 runners, lasts just under three minutes as participants dressed in white and wearing red neck scarves run from a dozen bulls. The animals were from cattle breeder Cebada Gago in Andalucia, renowned for rearing dangerous bulls responsible for the most injuries in the history of the week-long San Fermin festival.
€45,000 for doing nothing
Someone in Romania thought he'd made a fair amount of money when he sold an old typewriter for €100 euros at a flea market. He turned out to be very wrong… The ‘typewriter’ was, in fact, a German Wehrmacht Enigma I, a World War Two cipher machine, and the collector who bought it put it up for sale at a Bucharest auction house with a starting price of €9,000. On Tuesday, the auction house sold it to an online bidder for €45,000. ‘The collector bought it from a flea market. He's a cryptography professor and he knew very well what he was buying,’ the collectible consignment manager at the Bucharest auction house told Reuters.

North Korea to build Apple Benidorm-style resort surveys spain

North Korea is aiming to emulate and replicate a ‘costa-style’ beach resort within its own nation for the North-East seaside town of Wonsan in order to increase its number of foreign visitors. The delegation of North Koreans examined both Barcelona and Valencia, but only had eyes for the Costa Blanca, reported to be ‘amazed by
the dimensions’ of Benidorm’s tower blocks and holiday parks. At the North Korean Embassy in Madrid, a spokesman told the press that they would be ready for its first tourists by mid-2018. Matias Perez, one of the trip organisers, remarked that ‘it’s positive that they want to stop being the most hermetic country in the world.’ The trip was a part of North Korea’s tourism plans to increase the number of foreign visitors from just over 100,000 to 1 million people annually. The country’s tourism ambitions are shown by their plans to develop Won-
san town into a resort. Architectural designs by Hong Kong based firm PLT reveal plans to build a $200 million (€175 million) airport in Wonsan and an underwater hotel, flower park and stadium within the town. Yet, these plans will require high investment, in a state that struggles to feed its own population. According to the World Food Programme, 70 per cent of its population live with ‘food insecurity’ and chronic malnutrition. Despite these critical issues, North Korea still plans to attract two million tourists by 2020.
Since 2015, Apple has been using LIDAR-equipped mapping vehicles to capture street-level imagery for the Apple Maps app. Apple has expanded the areas where it is collecting data several times over the course of the last two years and according to the latest update to the company's support page, Apple Maps vehicles have recently made their way into Spain. Apple regularly highlights the countries and cities around the world where its vehicles are located, and between July 3 and August 13, Apple will collect data in the Biscay province of Spain, in Arratia-Nerbioi, Busturialdea, Durangaldea, Enkarterri, Greater Bilbao, Lea Artibai and Uribe-Kosta. According to Apple's support page, the information collected by the mapping vehicles will be used to improve Apple Maps, but just what Apple plans to do with the data remains unclear. Because Apple promises to blur faces and license plates ahead of publication, there's been speculation that the company is working on a ‘street view’ addition to Apple Maps to mirror Google Maps.

Spain’s ‘biggest cultural deal in over 20 years’ Cuban-American collector, philanthropist and art historian Roberto Polo will loan his collection of more than 7,000 works of modern and contemporary art to two Spanish institutions for the next 15 years, the country's biggest cultural deal in over 20 years, officials said on Tuesday. The collection, which includes works by German artist Max Ernst and U.S. sculptor Martin Kline, will be shown at museums in Toledo and Cuenca in central Spain, the president of the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano Garcia-Page, told a news conference in Toledo. After 15 years the loan period may be extended or the works may be donated to Spain, he added. Garcia-Page said this was ‘the most important cultural operation for the country’ since the Spanish government agreed to buy the prized art collection of the Swiss industrialist Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1993. Officials did not give an estimate for the value of the works which will be loaned but the Spanish press said the collection is insured for €44 million. ‘I have always loaned works and in the end if they have been well taken care of, valued and respected, I have always ended up donating them, but I first want to have proof that they are valued and respected as they should,’ said Polo, who lives in Brussels where he owns an art gallery that bears his name. ‘I am going to turn 66 in August and in 15 years I will not have many more years left,’ he added.

Britain launches inquiry into contaminated blood which killed 2,400 NHS patients by Staff Reporter Britain will hold a public inquiry into contaminated blood supplied to patients by the NHS which killed at least 2,400 people, the government said on Tuesday. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, blood supplied to the NHS was contaminated with viruses such as HIV or hepatitis C and infected thousands of people with haemophilia or other bleeding disorders. Health minister Philip Dunne said many documents were publicly available which gave a comprehensive picture of events and decisions made at the time. ‘However, I recognise for those affected these steps do not go far enough to provide the answers that they want to get to the truth of what happened,’ he told parliament. Families of victims will be consulted to decide what form the inquiry will take. A report by lawmakers in 2015 said the Department of Health estimated that more than 30,000 people might have been infected with hepatitis C between 1970 and 1991 when Britain imported blood from the United States but just 6,000 had been identified. A further 1,500 were infected with HIV between 1978 and 1985.

Police officers shot in Gava A man was arrested last week after he shot two police officers in the northeastern town of Gava, in Barcelona province. The officers were seriously injured in the incident which occurred last Thursday at around 4.00pm. The two officers, aged 50 and 62, were allegedly shot with an AK-47 rifle after they approached a suspicious-looking car. The suspect reportedly ran from the vehicle following the incident and barricaded himself in a nearby home. He was eventually detained and the officers were taken to hospital. The incident was not thought to be related to terrorism - a Spanish Home Office spokeswoman said: ‘With the information available, the incident in Gava is not related to terrorism.’

Acrobat dies at Madrid festival

by Tahnee Wright An acrobat died after plunging over 30 metres while performing a feat prior to Green Day's headlining set at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid last Friday. The acrobat, Pedro Aunion Monroy, was performing an aerial stunt from inside a box that was suspended from a crane at the time of the accident. Although it appeared that Monroy was wearing a harness, he plunged to the ground in front of thousands of stunned festival-goers. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but
42-year-old Monroy died soon after from injuries sustained in the fall. After only a slight delay, Green Day's set continued as scheduled. According to the band, they weren't notified of Monroy's death until after their performance. ‘We just got off stage at Mad Cool Festival to disturbing news. A very brave artist named Pedro lost his life tonight in a tragic accident,’ Green Day tweeted. ‘Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.’ Both Mad Cool and Green Day were accused of insensitivity for resuming the
festival so soon after the acrobat's fall. In a statement, Mad Cool organisers defended their decision to continue on despite the crowd witnessing a deadly accident. ‘Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident that the aerial dancer suffered during the second day of the festival. For security reasons, the festival decided to continue with its programming,’ organisers wrote. ‘We send our most sincere condolences to all his family. Tomorrow Saturday 8, during the festival, we will render a heartfelt tribute to the artist.’
Hard Rock plans €2 billion resort in Spain Hard Rock International has announced plans to open a sprawling, €2 billion resort in Spain that will become one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with including a casino, new concert venue, and 600-room hotel. To be set in north-eastern Spain in Vila-seca and Salou, Tarragona, Hard Rock Entertainment World will occupy a space of 745,000 square metres. Anchoring the resort will be the iconic, guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel, which will span 100,00 square metreswith 600 rooms. The resort casino will include 1,200 slot machines and 100 table games and feature a pool for guests. Blueprints for the resort also call for a new entertainment venue that can accommodate 15,000 people. The venue will host national and international musical acts. In the first phase of the project, a collaboration with Port Aventura, another entertainment resort in the area, will see the development of a 500-room hotel catering to families, along with a luxury retail and shopping destination that will feature 75 shops and boutiques. The overall investment for the project is pegged at €2 billion. The Spanish resort will add to the brand's portfolio of 176 cafés, 24 hotels and 11 casinos in 75 countries around the world.

Alicante British passenger numbers continue to fly high
by Glenn Scott During the month of June 2017, Alicante-Elche Airport registered 1,402,226 passengers and an increase of almost 13% compared to the same month last year. By nationality, the highest numbers of passengers for that time were British with 637,139 passengers; Spanish - 120,880; German - 89,167; Dutch - 87,724; Norwegian - 75,564, and Swedish - 64,743 passengers. According to statics from Spanish airport authority AENA, for the first six months of the year in total the popular Costa Blanca terminal has increased by 850,000 passengers already and promises to significantly overhaul the 2016 yearly figure by some margin. In terms of operations, the terminal was responsible for a total of 9,598 flights in June, representing an increase of 11.2% over the same month of the previous year. The most numerous flights by countries were those that connected with the United Kingdom, with 3,827 take offs and landings; Spain - 1,323; Holland - 561; Germany -533; Norway - 487; Sweden - 413, and Belgium with 380. During the first six months of the year, the airport accounted for 6,199,328 passengers and 44,255 flights, an increase of 14% and 13.7% respectively compared to the same months of 2016. And finally for the month of June 2917, in the cargo section, Alicante-Elche Airport dealt with 622.4 tonnes of goods, which is an increase of 16.6% over the same month of the previous year. In terms of the accumulated figure, from January to June, 3,458.7 tonnes of goods were handled, 20.2% more than the same period of in 2016.
Elche crackdown on deliberate vehicle damage "Would you give us information to identify the person who scratched your car or punctured your tyres?" With this simple question the Local Police of Elche has launched a new and unique campaign to try to encourage car owners and witnesses alike to report damages to vehicles that end up with mysterious scratches on the bodywork or broken wing mirrors. The initiative has already born fruit thanks to someone connecting the police via social media at the end of June which led to a person in CarrĂşs arrested after being spotted scratching a car in the locality. The Operational Coordination Department of the Local Police in Elche has been placed in charge of carrying out the appropriate investigations. People are encouraged to contact the police through their website or via Facebook or Twitter, always using private messages which will remain confidential, noting the location of the vehicle that has been damaged, the date and time of the offense, where on the car the damage was carried out, and whether an implement was used or if someone was spotted deliberately kicking the vehicle. With all this information volunteered by the local people, the police can determine which areas under their control are most affected by this type of vandalism and can monitor those zones accordingly to prevent further occurrences in the future.

Specsavers Opticas launch campaign to support the deaf and blind Specsavers Opticas have announced that they will be supporting the Once Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (La Fundación ONCE para la Atención de Personas con Sordoceguera - FOAPS) over the next six months. They will be offering free comprehensive eye tests at all eight of their opticians and asking patients to donate 1€ to FOAPS after their test until the end of the year. All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deafblind people to lead a full life and communicate. This is part of FOAPS’ 10 year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deaf-blind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who are totally isolated without their help. Specsavers Opticas are committed to supporting charities and protecting sight. They have chosen FOAPS to support because of the huge difficulties that the deaf-blind have with interacting with the world and communicating. “Most visually impaired people are able to rely on their other senses and can still communicate easily with the outside world. Whereas the deaf-blind experience the world through touch and need someone to connect them with the world.” explains José Ángel Moral-Tajadura from Specsavers Opticas. “The FOAPS interpreters are the eyes, ears
and often voice of the deaf-blind and have a crucial role to play. We hope that through our campaign we can raise enough money to fund an extra 400 hours of an interpreter. This costs 6,000€ so we need 6,000 people to come in and have their eyes tested and make a donation before the end of the year.” Esther Requena Olea, Director of FOAPS commented, “We are very happy that an international company such as Specsavers has decided to collaborate with our cause. The needs of the Deaf-Blind people are very specific and requires a lot of resources. Quiron Torrevieja gains international recognition In the category of ‘Highly Recommended’, the highly acclaimed Quiron Hospital in Torrevieja has gained recognition for being the Best International Hospital in that category at the 2017 International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ) Medical Travel Awards.

Coming together in support of the RBL Over a hundred members and friends attended the recent Royal British Legion BBQ held at the Vistabella Golf, for what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of song, dance, food and generous amounts of alcohol. The afternoon’s entertainment was provided by local entertainer TJ Jones while the BBQ was cooked to an absolute delight. All those extra duties in the Sergeants Mess kitchen were not wasted on the chef for the day. Jointly organised by Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa branches, the bulk of the planning was left to Torry Chairman Gerry Lynch who just wasn’t quick enough to take a step back, and what a wonderful job he did despite all those misspent years in the Royal Air Force. The bulk of the attendance came from the two host branches but it was a delight to see the Chairman of the newly formed Murcia Branch, Steve Carne, who came along from Calasparra with a handful of his loyal members. The branch is only a little over 3 months ago but, already with a membership in excess of 60, it is certainly going in the right direction. Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch was represented by Chairman Robin Hargrave while District Officers, Pamela Twissell Cross and Susan Shaw, travelled down through bandit country from the Northern outposts. Proceeds from the raffle raised €450 which will be donated to Spain (District North) funds. Heat-waves – how to protect your health Recent heat-waves have caused serious health and social problems in the WHO European Region. These effects can be prevented. To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high, remember to keep cool and use common sense. The following tips are important. Drink plenty of fluids During hot weather you will need to increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait to drink until you are thirsty. During heavy exercise in a hot environment, drink 2–4 glasses of cool fluids per hour. Warning: If your doctor usually limits the amount of fluid you drink or you take diuretics, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot. Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar; they may actually cause your body to lose more fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps. Replace salt and minerals Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body. These must be replaced. If you must exercise, drink 2–4 glasses of cool, non-alcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals lost in sweat. If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage or taking salt tablets. Wear appropriate clothing Wear as little clothing as possible at home. Choose lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Sunburn affects the body’s ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids. It also causes pain and damages the skin. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (which will also keep you cooler), along with sunglasses and protective but light clothing. Schedule outdoor activities carefully If you must be outdoors, try to limit your activity to morning and evening hours. Try to rest often in shady areas so that your body’s thermostat will have a chance to recover. If you are not used to working or exercising in a hot en-
vironment, start slowly and gradually increase the pace. Remember to drink before you get thirsty. If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, stop all activity. Get into a cool area, or at least into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak or faint. Stay cool indoors Stay cool indoors, take frequent cool showers or a foot bath, or wet your hands, face and back of neck or use wet blankets. Use your stove and oven less to maintain a cooler temperature in your home. Try to cool the home at night. If necessary, find a cooler place than your home and spend a few hours there.
Take care of those at risk Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and watch them for signs of heat illness. Check on infants and young children much more often.
Adjust to the environment Be aware that any sudden change in temperature, such as an early summer heatwave, will be stressful to your body. You will have a greater tolerance for heat if you limit your physical activity until you become accustomed to the heat. If you travel to a hotter climate, allow several days to adapt to local temperatures before attempting any vigorous exercise, and work up to it gradually. Remember common sense Limit sun exposure at mid-day and in places of potential severe exposure such as beaches. Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car. Provide plenty of fresh water for pets, and leave water for them in a shady area.
What do the beach warning flags mean? Red Flags: The most serious of all beach warning flags, red flags warn swimmers of serious hazards in the water. One red flag means that the surf is high or there are dangerous currents, or both. It means that the water is closed to swimming, as conditions are too dangerous for even the strongest swimmers. Yellow Flags: When ocean conditions are rough, but not life-threatening, you might see a yellow flag on the beach. A yellow flag indicates potentially high surf or dangerous currents and undertows, and means that swimmers should exercise extreme caution. If there is a yellow flag, swim only near lifeguards and heed all lifeguard warnings. If you're swimming with children, or you aren't a strong swimmer yourself, wear a life jacket when swimming on yellow-flag days. Some beaches have a permanent yellow flag because of rocks, a sudden drop-off or a high population of bait fish that attracts predators. Green Flags: The ocean is always unpredictable and even on clear and calm days, hazards still exist. Still, there are days when the threat of danger is lower than others. A green flag on the beach is an all-clear sign, indicating that it's safe to swim. Even when the flag is green, though, exercise caution in the ocean, listen to lifeguard warnings and keep a close eye on children.

I believe it is happening more and more with this age of equality, when a young women’s fancy and mind turns to marriage. On this occasion, this young woman in question took her boyfriend’s hand stroked the back of it lovingly, and looked adoringly into his eyes, asking him to marry her, this was witnessed by Sylvia Wayne’s daughter who had been invited to have lunch with the couple. It had been quite a long courtship by any standards, 44 years to be precise, however the husband to be jumped at the chance to make Sylvia who proposed, his wife. Sylvia Wayne 93 years young, first met Sydney Altman in 1972 at a social event, and have been together since then, Sylvia a retired shop keeper for lingerie and children’s wear in Barkingside East London. Sydney originally from Glasgow explains that he had never asked Sylvia to marry him, “It just wasn’t on the cards, but I’m really pleased that she asked me, it really did not come as a surprise particularly after all this time, I just put my hand up, saying “at last”. Sylvia became a widow 50 years ago after her husband died at a young age, my first husband and myself were married in 1942 when I was 18, “it wasn’t very grand during those war years, we were up all night making and cutting sandwiches for the guests, we did not have any money and we ended 30 pounds in debt, he then went off to war. Sylvia explains “I invited my daughter Janis over
to have lunch with Sydney and myself, “just on the spur of the moment, I took Sydney’s hand and asked him to marry me, as I wanted to make an honest man of him”.
Surrounded by family and friends the ceremony took place at Enfield register office, “the weather was not great, but this did not deter us come rain or shine it was going to be a glorious day” said Sylvia “then we went off to a celebration tea at a posh Hotel”. Speeches at the reception were made by Mrs Keen Sylvia’s daughter, her brother Nicholas and the best man, grandson Simon Keen. Sydney says, “when I look
at Sylvia’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, I know that they belong to me in law”. “We even had a hen and stag night, I had to wear a sash across my chest as I walk along the street saying groom to be”. Sydney a retired pharmacist aged 87, says “it was a wonderful day, surrounded by family and friends, everyone was so happy, laughing and handshakes all day long, I’ve known Sylvia’s family so long, I’ve been welcomed into the family being married to Sylvia will further strengthen my bond to my bride’s family, they are like my children even her son calls me Dad”. Daughter Janis 65, organised the nuptials, “it was quite surreal as most of my friends unfortunately have to organise funerals as they lose their parents, so a wedding celebration for my mother is a very happy event”. The new Mrs Sylvia Altman wore a dusky pink outfit and had three bridesmaids, and page boys her great-grandchildren. After the day’s events had concluded, and the happy couple prepared to go to their home in Brookman’s Park in North London to continue the day’s celebration’s. Sylvia’s last words when she was asked if they had taken a taxi home, her reply was quite indigent, “My husband does not walk well, but he is an excellent driver”.

A Sense of Déjà Vu by

Massive demonstrations and anti-government violence sweeping many European cities fill me with a sense of déjà vu. Western media was muted in its coverage of the massive anti-G20 protests in Hamburg during which nearly 111 police were injured. Ironically, Russia media gave the best coverage. It was then I thought of events in the Soviet Bloc during the 1980s. Little did we know back then where these civil disturbances were going? All we could do was watch and wait. Eventually, the dysfunctional Eastern Bloc crumbled. Perhaps the 22 nations surrendered to Stalin by Churchill and Roosevelt at Yalta in February 1945 was bound to collapse anyway. From frying pan to fire: Those nations for whom World War II occupation dragged on for a further 45 years were to place their briefly freed shoulders in the European Union’s yoke. Former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, who did know his hammer from his sickle, wryly questioned why the EU was modelling itself on the former Soviet Bloc. His concerns are increasingly voiced today. The European Union boasts not one but two presidents, neither of whom is elected by Europe’s electorate. The EU regime, let’s call a spade a spade, is badly governed by 27 unelected commissioners. The Soviets called them commissars but a privy by any other name remains a privy. The European Union’s parliament is advi-
sory only. This might explain why only 30 MEPs out of highly paid 751 members bothered to attend an important EU parliamentary session on July 4. At least EU democracy can run on an empty tank. When on 7/8 July the G20 shindig was held in Hamburg tens of thousands of demonstrators besieged the once-war ravaged resurrected maritime city. Dubbed the ‘Welcome to Hell’ campaign it wasn’t much of a welcome for the heads of state and assorted invitees in attendance. Apart from the usual largely unelected heads of state who presented themselves at the shindig were some of the most unsavoury figures in modern history, several of whom are under investigation. Others, like U.S President Donald Trump, Britain’s PM Theresa May and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Finance, have the blood of millions on their hands. Known by the company one keeps there were also in attendance the presidents of West African despotic regimes, Senegal and Guinea. Other vultures descending on the tax-funded banqueting binge included Christine Lagarde. The head of the International Monetary Fund was recently found guilty of fraud but no charges were levelled. I am a bit old for street protests but I can’t help but think that on this occasion the demonstrators hold the moral high ground. If you want to see the EU’s future fast rewind to the Soviet Bloc circa 1989.

I trust that those of you who have been following these articles have been discovering all the new sentences you’ve been able to make, and of course going round practising them! No doubt you’ve got into all sorts of muddles as well, but that’s a normal part of language learning, so no problem there. First things first, before we learn anything new, let’s look at the answers to the homework. You had to translate the following sentences into English – so here they are with the answers. No quiero volver a casa hoy. I don’t want to return home today. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? Do you want to dance with me? Voy a hablar con mi amigo. I’m going to speak to my friend. ¿Vas a beber vino?
Are you going to drink wine? No necesito comer ahora. I don’t need to eat now. ¿Puedo aprender más? Can I learn more? This week we are going to add another “first person” expression to our collection. Here it is: ME GUSTA meaning “I like”. Now ME GUSTA works slightly differently from the other first person phrases we have learnt so far, because although we translate it as “I like”, it doesn’t strictly mean that literally. It actually means: “it pleases me”. In a way you don’t even need to know that, but some people get themselves in a pickle because they think that the “me” bit means “I”. Also
they tend to mispronounce it like the English word “me” and they end up saying things like “me quiero” for I like, and “me necesito” for I need. That is totally wrong!!! We use “quiero” on its own for I want and “necesito” on its own for I need. If we wanted to add the word for “I”, this is “yo”. So you just have to accept that ME GUSTA is different from the others, and wait for the full explanation to appear later on. Glad we got that cleared up anyway! Me gusta (it pleases me = I like) can link to a huge range of verbs just as the other expressions we learn before. So, we can say: ME GUSTA COCINAR ME GUSTA BAILAR ME GUSTA TRABAJAR

Symonds Yat Rock in Herefordshire is regarded by many as the most scenic spot in England and visiting it for the first time in May, I can enthusiastically concur with that assessment. Perched high above the Wye valley, the panorama of meadows; woodland; distant church spires and pretty country houses, is quite spectacular. But a chance comment from a small group standing close by, caught my attention and went something like this: “They are always going on about our over populated country, but just look”. A young man was lecturing his companions, sweeping his arm expansively across the vista by way of emphasis. It gave me food for thought, and to be honest, it left me feeling somewhat alarmed. On ITV’s News at ten each night, the opening credits show a nighttime satellite view of Europe. The light pollution that envelopes great swathes of England is extraordinary. From Liverpool in the west, right across the country to the east coast; also Birmingham and the Midlands, and the great light explosion of London and the Home Counties. Compare it to much larger countries like France and Spain where there are substantial sectors of comparative dullness, indicating areas of least population. The contrast is striking. Yes there are regions in England like the South West, that are relatively free thus far, but as the great conurbations expand outwards, swallowing up thousands of acres of green belt land with their villages and hamlets in order to satisfy the insatiable demand for housing, these areas are diminishing fast. My home town of Reading – no great city by any means – has changed out of all proportion since I was a boy. A brook in the countryside where I used to fish, and was two miles from my home, is now sandwiched between a science park and office blocks and housing. And showing compassion to our fellow human beings who wish to escape tyranny and war is right and it is desirable. But this must be proportionate to the compassion that we simply must show to our environment. 97% of our wild meadows have been lost since the end of the Second World War and with them, flowers, insects and birds, some that were commonplace not so long ago, but are now endangered. If we do not urgently tend to Mother Earth, she may very well turn her back on us, and compassion to fellow humans will become an irrelevant issue.
or maybe for most of us that should be: NO ME GUSTA TRABAJAR I don’t like working NO ME GUSTA BEBER I don’t like drinking Well – it takes all sorts. Another thing that has to be said to help us poor confused English speakers – in English we use the “-ing” form of the verb with “I like” – cooking, dancing, working, drinking, but in Spanish we don’t do this. If it helps we can think that what we are really saying is: “I like to cook”, “I like to dance” etc. So, after ME GUSTA we always use the infinitives of the verb (the forms ending in –ar, -er, or –ir) and never alter them anything else, despite how much we may be tempted to do so. Something else we can do now is make even longer sentences with all kinds of things we already now. Here are two more words that
can help us to do this: “but” which is PERO, and “also” or “as well” which is TAMBIÉN. Here is an example of the sorts of things we can do: ME GUSTA BAILAR Y ME GUSTA BEBER TAMBIÉN. I like dancing and I like drinking as well. NECESITO DORMIR PERO VOY A TRABAJAR. I need to sleep but I’m going to work. I think next lesson we need to widen our range of words as we’re beginning to get a bit limited, but for now here’s a couple of things you can have a go at at home. How would we say in Spanish? I like talking but I need to work. Can I eat and drink as well? Answers as ever next week, and lots of new verbs to look forward to! You see, you’re even looking forward to verbs now!

Pensions challenge met The Pensions Regulator (TPR) published its Annual Report and Accounts this week showing how it has met ongoing challenges across the pensions landscape by adapting its regulatory approach. TPR has responded to increased complexity in the pensions landscape, a growth in its remit and ongoing economic and political challenges, by strengthening its resources in its frontline regulatory teams, being clearer about its expectations and through the bolder use of its enforcement powers to act more quickly and decisively. These include the continued successful implementation of automatic enrolment through targeted communication and guidance for employers, advisers and the public but also the use of its fining powers to ensure employer compliance remains extremely high, with more than eight million members now automatically enrolled in a workplace pension scheme. Working with Government on the Pension Schemes Act, TPR will continue to play a key role in protecting members of master trust schemes – used by thousands of employers to meet their pension duties – which has resulted in TPR’s first authorisation and supervisory powers.
In relation to defined benefit schemes, in the last year TPR recovered more than £650 million (including settlements in the BHS and Coats cases) as a result of its case teams’ efforts, taking the total amount recovered through the direct use of its anti-avoidance powers to well over £1 billion. TPR Chair Mark Boyle, said: “Against the backdrop of continued political and economic uncertainty, we have worked hard to make our expectations clearer to those we regulate, and to act decisively to protect workplace pension savers. “Our work to deliver pension savings to millions more workers through automatic enrolment, and to protect those in pension schemes by ensuring standards are met, is a highlight of another strong year for TPR. “We have had success with, and learnt from, some very high profile cases, and we have also started a major internal review of the way we regulate which will deliver new regulatory approaches in line with our growing responsibilities, all of which will ensure we remain fit for purpose for years to come.”

Model expo pulls in the crowds
The Military Model Exhibition attracted hundreds of visitors over the weekend at the MOE HQ, Detachment Teniente Morejón, in Cabo Roig, the military barracks just along from the Cabo Roig Marina. Early visitors included Eduardo Dolon, the Valencian Minister for Tourism and
two Orihuela Councillors, Sofia Alvarez and Damasco Aparicio. The Royal British Legion was also well supported with the Orihuela Costa’s two representatives from the Chelsea Royal Hospital, Skippy Teasdale and Wayne Campbell, along with local Branch secretary and Poppy Appeal Coordinator,
Jean Heald and Eddie Coleman. The exhibition itself showed the Spanish Security Services, Police and Armed Forces through the years with models of air, sea and landing craft as well as complete military uniforms, lots of action photographs and dozens of lead soldiers.

Sauteed chorizo with red wine & honey A tasty quick and easy recipe for any BBQ , Buffet or Spanish Tapas
INGREDIENTS 6 small ´dulce´(sweet) chorizo or picante (hot) if you prefer! 1tbsp olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed Large splash red wine 1tbsp honey Handful chopped fresh parsley METHOD Add olive oil to pan and add onions and garlic until starting to go soft. Add your chorizo until brown all over and add the red wine and honey. Simmer and cover for a few minutes. Add a plash more wine if starting to go dry (or water). Just before serving sprinkle the chopped parsley over the dish. If you can´t get the small bit size chorizo, use the larger ones and just cut them. Again, you can adjust the ingredients to your personal taste.

Form into small balls about the size of a golf ball, place on a baking tray and flatten slightly then bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown.

Go veggie to lose weight Any vegetarians, living or visiting Spain up to around ten years ago, will appreciate how much has changed for non meat eaters in those intervening years. I can vividly remember scanning menus in restaurants desperately looking for something other than tortilla or gazpacho to quell my grumbling, empty stomach. Even ordering a sandwich vegetal, had its inevitable pitfalls, when the waiter would ask if you wanted ham or tuna on it, then look in horror and disbelief, like you were from another planet, when you told him you wanted neither. These days, following a growing trend from younger Spaniards who are eschewing meat in their diet, the choice for vegetarians is whilst nowhere near the same as in other European countries, at least a lot better than it used to be. More and more people are switching to a vegetarian diet as new research suggests, it could have a whole host of health benefits, including weight loss. People who go vegetarian not only lose weight more effectively than those on carnivorous low-calorie diets, but also improve their metabolism by reducing muscle fat, a new study has found. Losing muscle fat improves glucose and metabolism so this finding is particularly important for people with metabolic syndrome - the medical term for a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity - the researchers said. Lead author Dr Hana Kahleová, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington DC, also said the finding could have a
significant impact on Type 2 diabetes. More than 70 people with Type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to follow either a vegetarian diet or a conventional anti-diabetic diet throughout the study. The vegetarian diet was primarily vegan, consisting of vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits and nuts, with animal products limited to a maximum of one portion of low-fat yoghurt per day; the conventional diabetic diet followed the official recommendations of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Both diets contained the same amount of calories per day. The vegetarian diet was found to be almost twice as
effective in reducing body weight, resulting in an average loss of 6.2kg compared to 3.2kg for the conventional diet. The team then studied fat-storage tissue in the subjects’ thighs to see how the two different diets had affected subcutaneous, subfascial and intramuscular fat (that is, fat under the skin, on the surface of muscles and inside muscles). They found that both diets caused a similar reduction in subcutaneous fat. However, subfascial fat was only reduced in response to the vegetarian diet, and intramuscular fat was more greatly reduced by the vegetarian diet. This is important as increased subfascial fat in patients with Type 2 diabetes has been associated with insulin resistance, so reducing it could have a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism. In addition, reducing intramuscular fat could help improve muscular strength and mobility, particularly in older people with diabetes. Dr Kahleová said: “Vegetarian diets proved to be the most effective diets for weight loss. However, we also showed that a vegetarian diet is much more effective at reducing muscle fat, thus improving metabolism. “This finding is important for people who are trying to lose weight, including those suffering from metabolic syndrome and/or Type 2 diabetes. But it is also relevant to anyone who takes their weight management seriously and wants to stay lean and healthy.” The research is published in full in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Are you starting to stress out about a receding hair-line? Then good news may be around the corner as a team of scientists in the US have made a breakthrough that could lead to a new way of growing hair. The method focuses around identifying immune system cells that play a key role in hair growth, and the function of 'hair triggers' that can stimulate hair follicles. The studies have been encouraging as androgenic alopecia, otherwise known to barbers as male-pattern baldness, accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men and two-thirds of men find themselves adjusting their grooming accordingly by the age of 35; that is unless the new science quickly plays catch-up. Master Barber, Stel Nicolaou, shares some of his tips and advice to aid with the ‘battle of the baldness’. It could be a hairy trip! Be vigilant Keep an eye out for hair loss early on, whether that's hair on the pillow, or in the plug hole of the shower. Androgenic alopecia results from a by-product of testosterone blocking the hair follicle, and can therefore strike at an early age when testosterone production is high. “Men can begin to notice hair thinning from the earlytwenties,” says Nicolaou. “Sticking to a good routine early on will ensure you create a good environment for hair growth.” Bad shower habits In and out the shower in minutes? That’s fine if people find themselves late for work or an appointment, but it pays to invest time in a shower routine. Spend at least a few minutes working the suds into the hair and scalp. “This stimulation improves blood flow directly to the scalp, so make sure you are giving your head a thorough massage,” Nicolaou says.
Don’t delay in taking action When it comes to the best styles for thinning hair, men are often tempted by longer cuts in hope that it will appear fuller. But give these misconceptions short shrift. “Shorter cuts work better because they help to seamlessly blend lengths, making the thinner areas less obvious,” Nicolaou advises. Reconsider shaving your head to disguise balding (otherwise known as ‘the reverse combover’) too – it just isn’t necessary. Poor haircut choice A good barber will know how to work with whatever hair is presented to them, but it doesn’t hurt to arrive armed with ideas. “If you are losing hair from the crown, a rough crop about 1-2 inches on top, styled with a good matte product can help to disguise thinning. Avoid partings too because they accentuate sparser areas. Instead, maximise on texture to help give the illusion of thickness and bulk.”
Wrong styling products Oil-slick hair is not the answer. Opt for lightweight, matte-effect products, as they help hair to look lustrous while going easy on the grease. Use no more than a 2p-sized amount of product.

Kept in the the dark and loving it
We all love those dark, shady corners of our Spanish home, particularly in the summer when they may be the only places in your home to escape the blinding, white, bright light. However, houseplants are not quite so keen on these dark corners and fade away through lack of sunlight. But, no need to panic, here are ten houseplants that will positively thrive in those dark, shady spots and bring a little lightness to those dingy corners. In fact, these low-light varieties won’t want anything to do with your already crowded windowsill.
Dieffenbachia
Filtered light is best for this plant. Try using a curtain as a barrier between it and the sun, especially during the the spring and summer when the plant is producing new, tender leaves.
Dragon tree
Spiky leaves that grow upwards and have a red outline makes the name of this plant absolutely perfect. But direct sunlight could damage them – so give this guy some sun and some shade.

SEAT in Android App breakthrough SEAT HAS taken another step further in car connectivity after becoming the first brand in the European industry to feature an app that is compatible with Android Auto. The Android-developed SEAT DriveApp is now available in the Google Play Store and allows drivers to view and manage the content of the App installed in an Android device on the screen of the car. With the SEAT DriveApp for Apple CarPlay and SEAT DriveApp for MirrorLink, which were already available in the App Store and Google Play Store, drivers can access full vehicle status data, in-car and remotely, to facilitate their driving experience. In this sense, indications include vehicle status such as tyre pressure or fuel consumption. The App will be updated in the next few weeks with even more features and services. The SEAT DriveApp has been wholly developed at the
SEAT Technical Centre, which is the technological driving force of the company that is fostering connectivity at SEAT. The brand aims to lead the creation of a mobility ecosystem providing easy mobility services to its
customers. SEAT already offers FullLink technology which is compatible with iOS and Android devices on the brand’s complete model line-up. Connectivity on SEAT models is enormously beneficial to drivers as it enables them to know the status of their vehicle wherever they are and remain connected to social media while driving in a completely secure manner. SEAT was the first company to launch Smartphone Integration technology that is compatible with iOS (CarPlay), Android (Android Auto) and MirrorLink, and for the past two years has participated at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress. At the same time, the company has signed agreements with partners such as Travipay or SABA that enable it to be much more agile when creating mobility solutions that keep pace with the consumer electronics market.

It’s all electric for Volvo
VOLVO CARS, the premium car maker, has announced that every Volvo it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business. The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history. “This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.” Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars. It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date. These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker. This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options. “This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.” The announcement underlines Volvo Cars’ commitment to minimising its environmental impact and making the cities of the future cleaner. Volvo Cars is focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations. It aims to have climate neutral manufacturing operations by 2025. The decision also follows this month’s announcement that Volvo Cars will turn Polestar into a new separately-branded electrified global high performance car company. Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, will lead Polestar as Chief Executive Officer.

Murray crashes out but tips British success Sir Andy Murray backed fellow British star Johanna Konta to win Wimbledon after he was unceremoniously dumped out of the men’s singles. The defending champion and two-time winner said he had tried his best “right to the end” after losing to American Sam Querrey on Centre Court. Murray’s surprising defeat comes one day after Konta became the first British woman to make it to the semifinals of Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1978 who was defending her title. World number one and top seed Murray failed to emulate her success, losing 6-3 4-6 7-6 1-6 1-6 to Querrey, ranked 28th. Looking tired and shellshocked after his defeat
he said: “It’s tough today. It would have been tough regardless of Jo’s results. You know, I hope she goes on to win the tournament. She’s certainly got a fantastic chance.” He said his fellow Briton Konta had played “extremely well under a lot of pressure”, adding: “She keeps playing like that, there’s no reason why she can’t do it - hopefully she goes on to win.” Earlier on, the capacity 13,000 crowd on the Centre Court propelled and encouraged Murray on as he attempted to cement a spot in the semi-finals but could not get him over the finish line. He appeared to struggle with his mobility throughout the match during the final stages was often seen clutching his hip that many have known had bothered him before the tournament got underway. There was even a doubt that he wouldn’t step on to the grass of SW19 to defend his title at all. “Throughout the whole tournament I’ve been a little bit sore. But I tried my best right to the end, gave everything I had. I’m proud about that,” said Sir Andy. “But it’s obviously disappointing to lose at Wimbledon. Again in the Silver category the scores were exceptional, John Hettrick secured 3rd place with 37 points Lars Jernberg must have thought that he had done enough to win but his 43 points could only take 2nd place with Yorkshireman Mick Kennedy topping this category with 44 points. Gold category saw a little more civilised scoring with 4 players on 33 points, 3rd went to Carstan Landaas on handicap, 2nd was taken by Kenny Winton again only lower handicap but 1st place went to Captain John Eyre with 38 points. Anne McGrath Perpetual Memorial Golf Tournament
Held at the popular Vistabella Golf Course, the recent Anne McGrath Memorial Tournament is an open competition organised by the Bull Flanagan Golf Society and this time attracted 28 players. As always, many prizes were on offer throughout the tournament although a deliberate number of restrictions are put in place to stop all the spoils going to a few players. All of the prizes were allocated to the appropriate players, too numerous to list them all. However in the main event, the trophy was won by Ian Allison with 39 points, narrowly ahead of Bill Fantom who finished in second place with 37 points. A special prize of €100 was on offer for any player who could manage to get an hole in one on the par 3, hole 8. At the close of the event, all the players returned to the Bull Flanagan for a well-earned drink and a meal. After the presentations were made, Mick McGrath thanked all the support from the sponsors, including Vistabella Golf course, and expressed his hope that everyone that had taken part had enjoyed their day. All the income raised on the day – which is expected to surpass €2000 – will be passed over once all has been received to the Oncology Department at Torrevieja Hospital to assist their daily task in dealing with patients who are suffering from cancer.

Captains report I would like to start by saying after being a member of Eurogolf for over 20 years its been truly an honour to be your captain this season. I would also like to thank the committee for all their hard work and great support during my captaincy including Clive Horne who stepped up to the plate to be match secretary when we were left at the last minute with a vacancy. Its been a great season for Eurogolf with lots of new members and its my pleasure to welcome them into our society and wish them all well. I know most of them are enjoying the social side of Eurogolf aswell as the golf. As captain Ive had a good year with not too many problems.The captains ball, captains day and the presentation evening were all well supported and I thank all who attended for that. A few games didn’t go quite according to plan but hopefully lessons have been learned and the same mistakes wont be made again. The Captains bunker was a great success and most members took it in the spirit it was meant to be, a bit of fun whilst raising money for charity. It was very amusing how members liked to snitch on their playing partners. The total raised was €553 from the bunker fund and overall €2401 which was handed over to the counsellor for social services Rojales who said she was going to use the money to help the elderly people of Rojales with wheelchairs and motability scooters. Last year when I was looking for a Vice Captain it proved very difficult to get someone to accept the position, as Fred now knows himself. Im not talking out of turn, as Fred knows this but with just a few weeks to go to the end of last season I was fortunately drawn to play with Fred and he agreed to be my vice captain. I was over the moon even though I hardly knew him. But 12 months on and having played with him every week I’ve got to know him really well and with his many years of golf experience I’ve no doubt he will be a super Captain. I wish him and his new committee every success for next season and I look forward to being the President. Before I finish I would like to pay tribute to a committee member who has for many years worked really hard for Eurogolf. Alot of members i’m sure don’t realise how much work goes on behind the scenes so it gives me great pleasure to present Sue Gillett with a bouquet of flowers from the members as a show of appreciation for everything she has done for Eurogolf.
