by Tahnee Wright Oliva Town Council announced this week that it will intensify its monitoring of the Parque de la Marjal. The announcement comes as many areas within the park could be mistaken for a tip – unscrupulous individuals dumping car parts, tyres and even medical waste. Imma Ibiza, Councillor of Environment highlighted the effects of the illicit dumping – not only will it encourage the proliferation of pests but it will cause problems in the soil, contaminating the subsoil which could, in

the long run, contaminate the aquifers. She reminded individuals that the Ecoparc located on Poligono Industrial el Brosquil near the fire station is available for their use – its opening hours having recently been extended. She reminded businesses that they should be contracting accredited waste management companies to dispose of their waste. Municipal workers have cleared the park this week, but the Town Council have stressed that this situation cannot continue – individuals and businesses must not dump their waste in the park.

Kirsty Maxwell’s mother speaks out for the first time She said: ‘We have been putting leaflets around the pubs. ‘A lot of the people are Scottish and Spanish. They all know about it. ‘They all know Kirsty's face from the picture. ‘We would like to think they would get in touch.’ During their return to Benidorm, the family tried to find the person who took a photograph of her body lying next to a swimming pool. Consultant David Swindle said: ‘It is a devastating thing for the family to see. This could be something that leads to more information that helps gets the truth.’ ‘We are not satisfied that the police have interviewed everyone that stayed in these apartments and that is a big issue.’

Kirsty’s family flew to Benidorm after the 27-year-old's fall from a tenth floor balcony at the Payma Apartments on April 29. Hundreds of posters and leaflets were distributed to those living in the area while the family also visited a variety of people and organisations including Victim Support. Speaking for the first time to the Scottish press, Kirsty's mother Denise said the family are returning to Scotland with renewed hope but reiterated she will return to Spain if the case is not solved.

A helicopter was dispatched to the Morro de Toix de la Sierra de Mascarat in Calpe to rescue a climber on Tuesday. At around 7.00pm, the Provincial Consortium of Alicante Fire Rescue were notified of the young Argentinian man who was suspended some 20 metres in the air from his rope along the popular climbing route. A helicopter was immediately dispatched to the scene. The climber had been practicing with a friend from Petrer when his rope ceased to work. The firemen learnt that the climber’s friend had to fix the rope for over two hours. The climber was freed and - complaining that he could not feel his legs - flown straight to a park in Benidorm where he was transferred into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

British Benitachell resident in prestigious European appointment by Tahnee Wright Margaret Hales, a British resident in Benitachell was recently appointed International President of the British Section of the European Union of Women (EUW). The EUW was founded in Salzburg in 1953 by Austrian MP Dr Lola Solar, with the aim of enabling women to contribute to international debate and to stimulate interest in European affairs. Today there are 17 countries in membership. The EUW has consultative status with the Council of Europe and Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (Ecosoc). It also contributes to the work of the European Parliament through the EPP Women’s Section and national MEPs. Through the EUW's six commissions, research work into issues of today and more importantly, tomorrow is carried out and the results fed into various national and international bodies. The EUW works for the strengthening of peace on the basis of justice and the free cooperation of peoples. The European Union of Women stands for the safeguarding of human dignity and freedom, the maintenance of Europe’s outstanding cultural heritage and for social and economic progress while protecting the rights of the individual. EUW maintains that these aims will only be realised by increasing the influence of women. For many years the EUW’s British Section has organised democracy training courses for women in Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland and the Ukraine and organised member information visits to many European countries. Margaret was congratulated by Benitachell Councillor of Communication, Myra van 't Hoff, for her appointment.

Mock rescue success on l’Ampolla beach Ferrovial Servicios, the company contracted to provide search and rescue along the Teulada-Moraira coastline carried out a mock rescue operation on l’Ampolla beach last week. The mock rescue operation, which took only 14 minutes, involved a female bather being ‘hit’ by a jet-ski, leaving her floating a few metres from the buoys. A lifeguard ran to the bather’s rescue from a nearby surveillance station and emergency services arrived within minutes of the warning. The CPR to the person playing the role of the female bather was so realistic that onlooking beach-goers believed it to be a real rescue operation. Councillor Nieves Rodriguez expressed satisfaction at the rapid 14-minute response from Ferrovial Servicios and the emergency services.

LIV’n’G launch ‘Smile for Bradley’ in Benidorm by Staff Reporter LIV'n'G sisters Olivia Crawford (16) and Georgia Fletcher (22) who released 'Smile for Bradley' on 23 June have been in Benidorm this week after requests for the song bombarded local radio stations. The song is a reworking of the classic ‘Smile’ by Liv n’ G with new lyrics penned just for six-year-old Bradley Lowery. Bradley, from Blackhall Colliery, near Hartlepool in the UK, battled cancer most of his young life before he lost his fight on July 7. His life changed at the age of 18 months when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Bradley beat the disease once but after some time in remission it came back in July 2016. His family desperately raised money for treatment in the US but doctors delivered the heart-breaking news that the little boy’s cancer had become terminal. Bradley’s mum Gemma announced on Facebook that he had lost his battle with cancer at 1:35pm on July 7. Any money raised which did not go towards Bradley’s treatment will be put into the Bradley Lowery Foundation to support others going through the same ordeal. ‘Smile for Bradley’ has been endorsed by the Chaplin organisation and Bradley’s family also love the video. It has been on Amazon, Google Play and iTunes bestseller lists and reached number 3 on the iTunes download chart, before entering the UK official charts at number 4. It has also been in the Vodafone official chart for 2 weeks, at number 4 and 11. BBC Tees presenter Paul ‘Goffy’ Gough who runs Goffy Media in Hartlepool and was instrumental in organising LIV’n’G’s visits to radio stations in Benidorm said:

‘The radio station managers contacted me after being bombarded with requests for the song and LIV’n’G, so I contacted the family, who were only too happy to launch ‘Smile for Bradley’ on the Costa Blanca.’ LIV’n’G’s Georgia added, ’every penny earned from the single and video will go to Bradley’s Foundation and help young people and families in similar circumstances. We are so proud to be launching the single in Benidorm and have received so many lovely messages.’ The girls took to the decks at Cool FM on Tuesday, introducing ‘Smile for Bradley’ and have been live on Facebook throughout the week. Glyndebourne in Gata

The gardens of Worshipful Brother Darrell Clayton and wife Sally in Gata were thrown open once again recently to host the local Freemasons ‘Glynderbourne in Gata’ celebration. Now an annual event, the celebration is modelled after Glynderbourne in England although on a ‘slightly smaller’ scale. Glyndebourne is an English country house, the site of an opera house that, since 1934, has been the venue for the annual Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Initially, operas were presented within the house but there is now a free-standing opera house on its grounds. The house itself, located near Lewes in East Sussex, England, is thought to be about six hundred years old and listed at grade II. Over 130 local Freemasons, wives and guests gathered for the black-tie event, which was blessed with exceptional weather. A ‘gigantic picnic’ was created as guests brought their own food and many thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the table decoration – with the best table winning a prize. This year, an element of fancy dress crept in with some guests (and tables!) dressed Hawaiian-style with others dressed ancient Roman-style. The entertainment this year was even more varied than last with a ‘non-stop feast of talented local entertainers’ including a tribute group, El Divo, a ladies choir, some dancing youngsters, the local tenor, Manuel Lazaro and local mezzo-soprano Gill Henry. At the end Gill and Manuel united as duo 'Cantabile' and received a standing ovation. ‘The level of talent for an event of this size was truly amazing and could have graced any stage in Europe’, said Worshipful Brother William Turney. A grand charity raffle was held - which offered some great prizes and raised an outstanding €1,800 for local charities. MISSING – have you seen Andres? Officers of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police have been searching for over a week for Andres Rojas Useche, a Javea resident who has been reported missing.

Andres - who is 36-yearsold - is said to have gone missing on June 23. He is Colombian, between 1.70 and 1.75 metres tall and has green eyes. If you have any information, please contact either of the forces.

€80,000 new wardrobe Benidorm City Council has budgeted €80,000 to provide its local police officers with new uniforms and protective accessories. The contract was approved by local government and the bid published earlier this week in the Official Gazette of the Province. Tenders are invited up to the value of €66,116, plus VAT for the twoyear contract. 51,000 has been budgeted for clothing, 11,000 for footwear and the remaining 4,116 for protective accessories. The closing date for tenders is in two weeks’ time and companies will be required to supply sample of the items in order for the City Council to verify that their quality meets the requirements.

Calpe creates 25 new homes… for birds!

Teulada-Moraira occupancy increases

The City of Calpe has installed 25 ceramic nestshouses on the roofs of selected properties in the old town as it aims to attract more birds to nest in the area and deter insects. Local ceramist, Esteban Juarez designed the nests-houses to replicate mills, towers and boats, with one of them even replicating the emblematic Muralla Roja de Bofill. The properties on which the nest-houses sit have been specially selected for having Arab roof tile. The goal is that sparrows and swallows will nest in the historic centre, forming part of the landscape and deterring insects.

Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares presented June’s municipal occupancy figures last week, which came in at 60.21 per cent, one per cent higher than last year’s figures. The most popular period in June was between 3 and 11 – as the Moors and

Christians fiestas were celebrated. The mayor is convinced that these figures indicate the municipality will enjoy a busy high summer season. International visitors came mainly from the UK, Belgium, France, Germany and Holland and national visitors came mainly from the Comunidad Valenciana and Madrid.

Hostels reported an occupancy of 75 per cent, hotels 71.5 per cent, holiday rentals 63.5 per cent and camping sites 31.3 per cent. The tourist office was busy, with 1,342 visits from international tourists and 147 visits from national tourists. An occupancy figure of 80 per cent is expected in July.

Treemendous work The pruning of the palm trees in Finestrat’s municipal green areas was pronounced complete earlier this week by the city council. Council workers pruned palm trees of the Washintoniana variety on the boulevard, in La Cala and in urbanisations. Finestrat’s Councillor of Environment, Technical Services and Works inspected the boulevard - where it is necessary to prune the trees twice a year – on Tuesday: ‘Pruning is carried out to prevent fruit and leaves from falling on the road, causing dirt and even damage. It is also important to prune the trees as these palms are present in areas of high traffic’. The first palm trees to be pruned were those in La Cala, where there are more than 100 – especially in l’Avenida Marina Maixa, the main access area to the beach and also where ‘most of the bars and restaurants with terraces are concentrated’. Works continued later on the boulevard and in urbanisations.

Congratulations on the new arrival Terra Natura Benidorm’s family continues to grow… by Staff Reporter The park recently celebrated the birth of 9 green tree pythons, a species which experiences great difficulty reproducing in captivity. The green tree python demands a complex incubation process, where it requires specific environmental conditions and because of this, no reproduction attempts have been successful at the park before now. The green tree python (morelia viridis) is a species of python native to New Guinea, islands in Indonesia, and Cape York Peninsula in Australia. As its name suggests, it is a bright green snake that can reach 2 metres in length and 1.6 kilograms in weight, with females slightly larger and heavier than males. In Terra Natura Benidorm there is a male and two females for whose reproduction it has been necessary to imitate the environmental conditions of their original environment quite accurately. To do this, the experts of the park emulated in their cubicles the rainy season that favors their reproduction, as well as much milder temperatures than usual. Finally, one of the females showed its state of gestation, changing from its usual

bright green colour to a more bluey tone – brought on by the ovulation and the pregnancy. The green tree python usually lays between 1 - 25 viable eggs per clutch. In this case, as the female was young, she laid 9 eggs that were incubated for 50 - 65 days. The hatchlings were born lemon-yellow with broken stripes and spots of orange-red. As they grow, they will acquire the bright green colour of adult specimens. The park will allow the young to grow a little and fully adapt to their environment before visitors can see them. The green tree python is not a poisonous species, but its bite can be painful as it has long, sharp fangs.

Kids go digging with Vilamuseu Vilamuseu in La Vila Joiosa will offer its summer course for children ‘Vilakids’ in August, this year focusing on archaeology. The course will be offered twice – from August 8 – 11 and August 22 – 25. The children will enjoy hands-on learning with professionals – from excavation through to restoration and their masterpieces will be displayed in the museum. The course costs just €25 for the four days, with 10 places available for each date. Registration will be held at the museum from August 1 – 4, 9.00am until 12.00pm. Monte Pego Resident’s Association in year-long sewage spill battle by Tahnee Wright About a year ago, the Asociacion de Vecinos de la Montana de Pego (AVMP), Monte Pego’s Official Residents Association noticed that the Monte Pego sewage treatment plant was spilling what appeared to be insufficiently treated sewage. The spill went directly into the the Barranc de Batlle and floated toward the River Riu Riaxo beyond the CV-700. There it would potentially contaminate the waterways of the adjacent rice fields and the Marjal nature reserve. The AVMP believe the spilling to be due to ‘the antiquated technology of the plant, its limited capacity considering the increasing number of residents and what appears to be inconsistent maintenance and upgrading’. In July 2016, the AVMP decided to bring the problem to the attention of Pego Ayuntamiento, submitting an instancia with photo evidence. The association were informed months later that its request for a thorough investigation had been forwarded to the environmental authority in Valencia and the spill was soon stopped. The sewage dried up after a few days leaving behind contaminated mud interspersed with used sanitary items. The sewage spill started again this year around the middle of May and has not stopped since. The AVMP claim the spill to have been running ‘24 hours a day with varying velocity’. At the lower end, the association estimate the velocity to be about 4 litres a minute, adding up to nearly 500,000 litres over a period of two months. The AVMP say, ‘it may be fair to assume that parts of this spilled sewage would have leaked into the table water. It also may well have entered the waterways, which are part of the watering system of the rice fields.’

They continue: ‘As part of our regular contact with municipal representatives of Pego, Rafol, and Denia we learned that the municipalities are fully aware of this problem. They have acknowledged its severity and the necessity for it to be resolved.’ ‘At the same time, they state that remedial actions are beyond their responsibility and budgetary resources.’ ‘A further aggravating circumstance for the continuation of this problem Pego Ayuntamiento sees is the contentious legal relationship with the developer of Monte Pego, to whom the treatment plant still belongs.’ ‘The AVMP is not addressing the sewage spill as a specific problem for Monte Pego residents. At this time, we

consider it as an alarming incident with a high potential for contaminating adjacent municipal and agricultural areas. As such, it might, if not stopped immediately, affect the physical and economic well- being of all residents in this area. Additionally, it might have a devastating effect on wildlife, vegetation, and nature in general.’ At a conference on Monday at the Casa de Cultura in Pego, the AVMP vowed it will not stop in its pursuit of resolving the sewage spill, ‘we will continue to bring this problem to the attention of the public at large and its political representatives, hoping that the value of living in a healthy environment prevails.’

Protesters urge Denia to become a leading city in the fight against animal cruelty 100 gather for Bous a la Mar demonstration in Denia. by Tahnee Wright Around 100 protesters gathered at the La Glorieta roundabout at the top of calle Marques de Campo in Denia last Sunday for a demonstration to raise awareness against the Bous a la Mar. The demonstration, organised by ASOCIACON E.R.A. called on Denia to end its widely condemned Bous a la Mar event and with it, the abuse and suffering of bulls. The protestors waved almost 30 banners and signs and a moving re-enactment of the event was performed, demonstrating the despair the Bous a la Mar bulls experience. One of the demonstration organisers, Zoe Gumm said: ‘We're here to raise awareness for the bulls - listen to our desperation. We cannot keep using bulls for our entertainment.’ ‘Bous a la Mar starts from this very spot. This is the cage that the young bulls – taken from their natural environment – are locked inside. What you may think is a bull running after the participants is actually a bull running from what's behind him. The bull is running out of fear like a normal animal. This is not something to be glorified.’ Victoria Aroztegui (pictured with her dog, Matilda) said she was involved in the demonstration ‘because the animals are not ours to do whatever we want with, they’re our earth partners and we’re taking advantage of innocent lives – this, sooner or later, will have consequences because all lives matter.’ The Bous a la Mar was accused of two acts of animal cruelty last year and protestors said, ‘this will continue, every year

Bous a la Mar gets more violent.’ Two bulls have drowned in previous years, not accounting for many other injuries suffered as the bulls run the risk of breaking their bones or having heart attacks due to the despair they experience. Protesters urged Denia to become a leading city in the fight against animal cruelty, suggesting it follows in the footsteps of Torrevieja with its child-friendly, cruelty-free bull run. ‘Denia is a beautiful and vibrant city with much music, gastronomy and art to be proud of - it doesn't need to partake in bull torture. Thanks to thousands of activists across Spain the bull sports are dying, so Denia should jump off the band-

wagon as soon as possible.’ Sheila Agudo Barba signed the two petitions that made their way around the demonstration - one for Denia to end the Bous a la Mar event and another for the bullfighting school in Alicante to be shut down. Sheila said she was involved ‘because Bous a la Mar is cruel and horrible – the bulls do not want to be there and less so in the name of human enjoyment, they have feelings.’ ASOCIACON E.R.A. will hold another demonstration in Denia on Sunday July 30. North Korea to build Apple Benidorm-style resort surveys spain

by Tahnee Wright Advisors from North Korea - the most isolated country in the world - recently visited the Costa Blanca to examine its tourism offering. North Korea is aiming to emulate and replicate a ‘costa-style’ beach resort within its own nation for the North-East seaside town of Wonsan in order to increase its number of foreign visitors. The delegation of North Koreans examined both Barcelona and Valencia, but only had eyes for the Costa Blanca, reported to be ‘amazed by

the dimensions’ of Benidorm’s tower blocks and holiday parks. At the North Korean Embassy in Madrid, a spokesman told the press that they would be ready for its first tourists by mid-2018. Matias Perez, one of the trip organisers, remarked that ‘it’s positive that they want to stop being the most hermetic country in the world.’ The trip was a part of North Korea’s tourism plans to increase the number of foreign visitors from just over 100,000 to 1 million people annually. The country’s tourism ambitions are shown by their plans to develop Won-

san town into a resort. Architectural designs by Hong Kong based firm PLT reveal plans to build a $200 million (€175 million) airport in Wonsan and an underwater hotel, flower park and stadium within the town. Yet, these plans will require high investment, in a state that struggles to feed its own population. According to the World Food Programme, 70 per cent of its population live with ‘food insecurity’ and chronic malnutrition. Despite these critical issues, North Korea still plans to attract two million tourists by 2020.

Since 2015, Apple has been using LIDAR-equipped mapping vehicles to capture street-level imagery for the Apple Maps app. Apple has expanded the areas where it is collecting data several times over the course of the last two years and according to the latest update to the company's support page, Apple Maps vehicles have recently made their way into Spain. Apple regularly highlights the countries and cities around the world where its vehicles are located, and between July 3 and August 13, Apple will collect data in the Biscay province of Spain, in Arratia-Nerbioi, Busturialdea, Durangaldea, Enkarterri, Greater Bilbao, Lea Artibai and Uribe-Kosta. According to Apple's support page, the information collected by the mapping vehicles will be used to improve Apple Maps, but just what Apple plans to do with the data remains unclear. Because Apple promises to blur faces and license plates ahead of publication, there's been speculation that the company is working on a ‘street view’ addition to Apple Maps to mirror Google Maps.

Spain’s ‘biggest cultural deal in over 20 years’ Cuban-American collector, philanthropist and art historian Roberto Polo will loan his collection of more than 7,000 works of modern and contemporary art to two Spanish institutions for the next 15 years, the country's biggest cultural deal in over 20 years, officials said on Tuesday. The collection, which includes works by German artist Max Ernst and U.S. sculptor Martin Kline, will be shown at museums in Toledo and Cuenca in central Spain, the president of the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano Garcia-Page, told a news conference in Toledo. After 15 years the loan period may be extended or the works may be donated to Spain, he added. Garcia-Page said this was ‘the most important cultural operation for the country’ since the Spanish government agreed to buy the prized art collection of the Swiss industrialist Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1993. Iberia Airlines fined €25,000 for forcing pregnancy tests

by Tahnee Wright Iberia Airlines has been fined €25,000 by the Ministry of Labour of the Balearic Islands for forcing aspiring flight attendants to take pregnancy tests in what has been ruled as discrimination. Since the fine, the Spanish airline will drop the pregnancy test requirement and will allow flight attendant applicants to decide whether they tell the company if they are expecting. ‘We will no longer include a pregnancy test in the medical examination for new hires,’ said Maria Teresa Garcia Menendez, Iberia's workplace health and safety officer in a statement.

‘We will continue to use all necessary means to ensure the safety and rights of pregnant employees, as we have always done. This is an exemplary company when it comes to hiring women.’ Sources within the ministry told the Spanish press that the practice was discovered last year during a campaign against labour discrimination. Inspectors found that Iberia established a series of criteria for their applicants. Interviews were conducted by external company Randstand, which also asked female applicants to submit pregnancy tests. The measures were put in place to ensure that women were not at risk of

being assigned tasks that could endanger their pregnancy, such as luggage handling, the airline said. It said it has never rejected a qualified candidate for employment on the grounds of pregnancy. ‘Enforcing pregnancy tests as part of recruitment has no place in 2017 and we are pleased that the practice is being reversed,’ said Lee Webster, spokesman for international charity Womankind Worldwide. Women make up 38 percent of the total staff at Iberia and childcare policies, along with reduced working hours, facilitate women's access to work, the airline said.

Three men gored in Pamplona opening run Three men were gored during the opening run of Pamplona's bull-running festival, the Red Cross said last Friday, with one other reported injury during the 875-metre run through the city. One of the men was caught by a bull's horns in the thorax and one in the scrotum, the Red Cross said. All three were taken to hospital for treatment. Two of those gored were from the United States, aged 29 and 35, while the other was a 46-year-old from Navarra in Spain. A man from Ireland, 39, was also hurt. The sprint, which typically attracts about 2,000 runners, lasts just under three minutes as participants dressed in white and wearing red neck scarves run from a dozen bulls. The animals were from cattle breeder Cebada Gago in Andalucia, renowned for rearing dangerous bulls responsible for the most injuries in the history of the week-long San Fermin festival.

Someone in Romania thought he'd made a fair amount of money when he sold an old typewriter for €100 euros at a flea market. He turned out to be very wrong… The ‘typewriter’ was, in fact, a German Wehrmacht Enigma I, a World War Two cipher machine, and the collector who bought it put it up for sale at a Bucharest auction house with a starting price of €9,000. On Tuesday, the auction house sold it to an online bidder for €45,000. ‘The collector bought it from a flea market. He's a cryptography professor and he knew very well what he was buying,’ the collectible consignment manager at the Bucharest auction house told Reuters.

Britain launches inquiry into contaminated blood which killed 2,400 NHS patients by Staff Reporter Britain will hold a public inquiry into contaminated blood supplied to patients by the NHS which killed at least 2,400 people, the government said on Tuesday. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, blood supplied to the NHS was contaminated with viruses such as HIV or hepatitis C and infected thousands of people with haemophilia or other bleeding disorders. Health minister Philip Dunne said many documents were publicly available which gave a comprehensive picture of events and decisions made at the time. ‘However, I recognise for those affected these steps do not go far enough to provide the answers that they want to get to the truth of what happened,’ he told parliament. Families of victims will be consulted to decide what form the inquiry will take. A report by lawmakers in 2015 said the Department of Health estimated that more than 30,000 people might have been infected with hepatitis C between 1970 and 1991 when Britain imported blood from the United States but just 6,000 had been identified. A further 1,500 were infected with HIV between 1978 and 1985.

The inquiry comes after leaders from all of Britain's main political parties, except the ruling Conservatives, wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister Theresa May demanding an investigation into the issue. ‘For decades people with bleeding disorders and their families have sought the truth,’ said Liz Carroll, Chief Executive of The Haemophilia Society. ‘Instead, they were told by the government that no mistakes were made while it repeatedly refused to acknowledge evidence of negligence and a subsequent cover up. Finally, they will have the chance to see justice.’

Police officers shot in Gava A man was arrested last week after he shot two police officers in the northeastern town of Gava, in Barcelona province. The officers were seriously injured in the incident which occurred last Thursday at around 4.00pm. The two officers, aged 50 and 62, were allegedly shot with an AK-47 rifle after they approached a suspicious-looking car. The suspect reportedly ran from the vehicle following the incident and barricaded himself in a nearby home. He was eventually detained and the officers were taken to hospital. The incident was not thought to be related to terrorism - a Spanish Home Office spokeswoman said: ‘With the information available, the incident in Gava is not related to terrorism.’

Acrobat dies at Madrid festival

by Tahnee Wright An acrobat died after plunging over 30 metres while performing a feat prior to Green Day's headlining set at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid last Friday. The acrobat, Pedro Aunion Monroy, was performing an aerial stunt from inside a box that was suspended from a crane at the time of the accident. Although it appeared that Monroy was wearing a harness, he plunged to the ground in front of thousands of stunned festival-goers. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but

42-year-old Monroy died soon after from injuries sustained in the fall. After only a slight delay, Green Day's set continued as scheduled. According to the band, they weren't notified of Monroy's death until after their performance. ‘We just got off stage at Mad Cool Festival to disturbing news. A very brave artist named Pedro lost his life tonight in a tragic accident,’ Green Day tweeted. ‘Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.’ Both Mad Cool and Green Day were accused of insensitivity for resuming the

festival so soon after the acrobat's fall. In a statement, Mad Cool organisers defended their decision to continue on despite the crowd witnessing a deadly accident. ‘Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident that the aerial dancer suffered during the second day of the festival. For security reasons, the festival decided to continue with its programming,’ organisers wrote. ‘We send our most sincere condolences to all his family. Tomorrow Saturday 8, during the festival, we will render a heartfelt tribute to the artist.’

Hard Rock plans €2 billion resort in Spain Hard Rock International has announced plans to open a sprawling, €2 billion resort in Spain that will become one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with including a casino, new concert venue, and 600-room hotel. To be set in north-eastern Spain in Vila-seca and Salou, Tarragona, Hard Rock Entertainment World will occupy a space of 745,000 square metres. Anchoring the resort will be the iconic, guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel, which will span 100,00 square metreswith 600 rooms. The resort casino will include 1,200 slot machines and 100 table games and feature a pool for guests. Blueprints for the resort also call for a new entertainment venue that can accommodate 15,000 people. The venue will host national and international musical acts. In the first phase of the project, a collaboration with Port Aventura, another entertainment resort in the area, will see the development of a 500-room hotel catering to families, along with a luxury retail and shopping destination that will feature 75 shops and boutiques. The overall investment for the project is pegged at €2 billion. The Spanish resort will add to the brand's portfolio of 176 cafés, 24 hotels and 11 casinos in 75 countries around the world.

Specsavers Opticas launch campaign to support the deaf and blind Specsavers Opticas have announced that they will be supporting the Once Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (La Fundación ONCE para la Atención de Personas con Sordoceguera - FOAPS) over the next six months. They will be offering free comprehensive eye tests at all eight of their opticians and asking patients to donate 1€ to FOAPS after their test until the end of the year. All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deaf-blind people to lead a full life and communicate. This is part of FOAPS’ 10 year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deafblind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who are totally isolated without their help. I believe it is happening more and more with this age of equality, when a young women’s fancy and mind turns to marriage. On this occasion, this young woman in question took her boyfriend’s hand stroked the back of it lovingly, and looked adoringly into his eyes, asking him to marry her, this was witnessed by Sylvia Wayne’s daughter who had been invited to have lunch with the couple. It had been quite a long courtship by any standards, 44 years to be precise, however the husband to be jumped at the chance to make Sylvia who proposed, his wife. Sylvia Wayne 93 years young, first met Sydney Altman in 1972 at a social event, and have been together since then, Sylvia a retired shop keeper for lingerie and children’s wear in Barkingside East London. Sydney originally from Glasgow explains that he had never asked Sylvia to marry him, “It just wasn’t on the cards, but I’m really pleased that she asked me, it really did not come as a surprise particularly after all this time, I just put my hand up, saying “at last”. Sylvia became a widow 50 years ago after her husband died at a young age, my first husband and myself were married in 1942 when I was 18, “it wasn’t very grand during those war years, we were up all night making and cutting sandwiches for the guests, we did not have any money and we ended 30 pounds in debt, he then went off to war. Sylvia explains “I invited my daughter Janis over

to have lunch with Sydney and myself, “just on the spur of the moment, I took Sydney’s hand and asked him to marry me, as I wanted to make an honest man of him”.

at Sylvia’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, I know that they belong to me in law”. “We even had a hen and stag night, I had to wear a sash across my chest as I walk along the street saying groom to be”. Sydney a retired pharmacist aged 87, says “it was a wonderful day, surrounded by family and friends, everyone was so happy, laughing and handshakes all day long, I’ve known Sylvia’s family so long, I’ve been welcomed into the family being married to Sylvia will further strengthen my bond to my bride’s family, they are like my children even her son calls me Dad”. Daughter Janis 65, organised the nuptials, “it was quite surreal as most of my friends unfortunately have to organise funerals as they lose their parents, so a wedding celebration for my mother is a very happy event”. The new Mrs Sylvia Altman wore a dusky pink outfit and had three bridesmaids, and page boys her great-grandchildren. After the day’s events had concluded, and the happy couple prepared to go to their home in Brookman’s Park in North London to continue the day’s celebration’s. Sylvia’s last words when she was asked if they had taken a taxi home, her reply was quite indigent, “My husband does not walk well, but he is an excellent driver”.

Massive demonstrations and anti-government violence sweeping many European cities fill me with a sense of déjà vu. Western media was muted in its coverage of the massive anti-G20 protests in Hamburg during which nearly 111 police were injured. Ironically, Russia media gave the best coverage. It was then I thought of events in the Soviet Bloc during the 1980s. Little did we know back then where these civil disturbances were going? All we could do was watch and wait. Eventually, the dysfunctional Eastern Bloc crumbled. Perhaps the 22 nations surrendered to Stalin by Churchill and Roosevelt at Yalta in February 1945 was bound to collapse anyway. From frying pan to fire: Those nations for whom World War II occupation dragged on for a further 45 years were to place their briefly freed shoulders in the European Union’s yoke. Former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, who did know his hammer from his sickle, wryly questioned why the EU was modelling itself on the former Soviet Bloc. His concerns are increasingly voiced today. The European Union boasts not one but two presidents, neither of whom is elected by Europe’s electorate. The EU regime, let’s call a spade a spade, is badly governed by 27 unelected commissioners. The Soviets called them commissars but a privy by any other name remains a privy. The European Union’s parliament is advisory

only. This might explain why only 30 MEPs out of highly paid 751 members bothered to attend an important EU parliamentary session on July 4. At least EU democracy can run on an empty tank. When on 7/8 July the G20 shindig was held in Hamburg tens of thousands of demonstrators besieged the once-war ravaged resurrected maritime city. Dubbed the ‘Welcome to Hell’ campaign it wasn’t much of a welcome for the heads of state and assorted invitees in attendance. Apart from the usual largely unelected heads of state who presented themselves at the shindig were some of the most unsavoury figures in modern history, several of whom are under investigation. Others, like U.S President Donald Trump, Britain’s PM Theresa May and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Finance, have the blood of millions on their hands. Known by the company one keeps there were also in attendance the presidents of West African despotic regimes, Senegal and Guinea. Other vultures descending on the tax-funded banqueting binge included Christine Lagarde. The head of the International Monetary Fund was recently found guilty of fraud but no charges were levelled. I am a bit old for street protests but I can’t help but think that on this occasion the demonstrators hold the moral high ground. Symonds Yat Rock in Herefordshire is regarded by many as the most scenic spot in England and visiting it for the first time in May, I can enthusiastically concur with that assessment. Perched high above the Wye valley, the panorama of meadows; woodland; distant church spires and pretty country houses, is quite spectacular. But a chance comment from a small group standing close by, caught my attention and went something like this: “They are always going on about our over populated country, but just look”. A young man was lecturing his companions, sweeping his arm expansively across the vista by way of emphasis. It gave me food for thought, and to be honest, it left me feeling somewhat alarmed. On ITV’s News at ten each night, the opening credits show a nighttime satellite view of Europe. The light pollution that envelopes great swathes of England is extraordinary. Yes there are regions in England like the South West, that are relatively free thus far, but as the great conurbations expand outwards, swallowing up thousands of acres of green belt land with their villages and hamlets in order to satisfy the insatiable demand for housing, these areas are diminishing fast. My home town of Reading – no great city by any means – has changed out of all proportion since I was a boy. A brook in the countryside where I used to fish, and was two miles from my home, is now sandwiched between a science park and office blocks and housing. And showing compassion to our fellow human beings who wish to escape tyranny and war is right and it is desirable. But this must be proportionate to the compassion that we simply must show to our environment. 97% of our wild meadows have been lost since the end of the Second World War and with them, flowers, insects and birds, some that were commonplace not so long ago, but are now endangered. Betting machines replace traditional Spanish flutters It’s been well known for many decades that whatever the economic fortunes of the country – and they’ve had their fair share of ups and downs in recent years – the Spanish people always find a few euro to have their weekly bet on the wide variety of local and national lotteries. The queues outside the myriad of lottery offices up and down the country regularly confirm that fact. As the dominance of technology has reached into the world of gambling in the past decade, figures released by the Ministry of Finance for the Valencian Community for 2016 show a 5.8% increase in betting machines and a total figure of €292m which in itself is 22% up on the previous year. The significance of that amount is it’s the first time, since the regulation of the market was introduced by the autonomous government in 2011, that this mode of gambling has outstripped the more traditional methods. The Spanish National Blind Organisation (ONCE) tickets account for €225m of gambling revenue with casinos recording €218m. Traditional bingo halls in the community take in €270.3m but if you add the estimated €75m taken via the electronic methods, bingo would come out top of the list. The success of the bingo halls is due in no small part to the increase in the number of younger people that have been attracted to visit such establishments that they now use as regular meeting points. Bingo in Spain isn’t just for ‘old ladies’ with their proud wings! There is also another significant area within the gambling business that is showing strong growth – online gaming. At the national level - there is no local data available – it has reached a staggering amount of almost €11bn which is a sharp increase of 27% compared to 2015, and the upward trend seems unstoppable.

Me gusta, pero Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

I trust that those of you who have been following these articles have been discovering all the new sentences you’ve been able to make, and of course going round practising them! No doubt you’ve got into all sorts of muddles as well, but that’s a normal part of language learning, so no problem there. First things first, before we learn anything new, let’s look at the answers to the homework. You had to translate the following sentences into English – so here they are with the answers. No quiero volver a casa hoy. I don’t want to return home today. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? Do you want to dance with me? Voy a hablar con mi amigo. I’m going to speak to my friend. ¿Vas a beber vino? Are you going to drink wine? No necesito comer ahora. I don’t need to eat now. ¿Puedo aprender más? Can I learn more? This week we are going to add another “first person” expression to our collection. Here it is: ME GUSTA meaning “I like”. Now ME GUSTA works slightly differently from the other first person phrases we have learnt so far, because although we translate it as “I like”, it doesn’t strictly mean that literally. It actually means: “it pleases me”. In a way you don’t even need to know that, but some people get themselves in a pickle because they think that the “me” bit means “I”. Also they tend to mispronounce it like the English word “me” and they end up saying things like “me quiero” for I like, and “me necesito” for I need. That is totally wrong!!! We use “quiero” on its own for I want and “necesito” on its own for I need. If we wanted to add the word for “I”, this is “yo”. So you just have to accept that ME GUSTA is different from the others, and wait for the full explanation to appear later on. Glad we got that cleared up anyway! Me gusta (it pleases me = I like) can link to a huge range of verbs just as the other

expressions we learn before. So, we can say: ME GUSTA COCINAR I like cooking ME GUSTA BAILAR I like dancing ME GUSTA TRABAJAR I like working or maybe for most of us that should be: NO ME GUSTA TRABAJAR I don’t like working NO ME GUSTA BEBER I don’t like drinking Well – it takes all sorts. Another thing that has to be said to help us poor confused English speakers – in English we use the “-ing” form of the verb with “I like” – cooking, dancing, working, drinking, but in Spanish we don’t do this. If it helps we can think that what we are really saying is: “I like to cook”, “I like to dance” etc. So, after ME GUSTA we always use the infinitives of the verb (the forms ending in –ar, -er, or –ir) and never alter them anything else, despite how much we may be tempted to do so. Something else we can do now is make even longer sentences with all kinds of things we already now. Here are two more words that can help us to do this: “but” which is PERO, and “also” or “as well” which is TAMBIÉN. Here is an example of the sorts of things we can do: ME GUSTA BAILAR Y ME GUSTA BEBER TAMBIÉN. I like dancing and I like drinking as well. NECESITO DORMIR PERO VOY A TRABAJAR. I need to sleep but I’m going to work. I think next lesson we need to widen our range of words as we’re beginning to get a bit limited, but for now here’s a couple of things you can have a go at at home. How would we say in Spanish? I like talking but I need to work. Can I eat and drink as well? Answers as ever next week, and lots of new verbs to look forward to! You see, you’re even looking forward to verbs now!

Meanwhile the bodies of young girls are beginning to turn up in the trenches of the road works which are being carried out all over the town. Is one of the girls the daughter of the Godfather. Banded back together with her team, and partnered with her trusty confidante DS Mark Boyd, Lottie is tasked with finding the murderer of the girls in the trenches. Whilst she is investigating the murders a young woman turns up on her doorstep with a little boy. Who is she and why does she appear to know Lottie’s dead husband? The investigation leads her to a privately-run detention centre for asylum seekers. The man in charge of the centre served with Lottie’s husband in Kosovo. Was Parkers husband as good a man as Lottie thought? A day to remember with the Free Spirits of the Marina Alta

by Tahnee Wright Notwithstanding the many serious issues currently facing the expatriate community in Spain, there is a large proportion determined to stay focused on why they opted to make the sunny state their home in the first place. One such group is the Free Spirits of the Marina Alta – a Harley Davidson enthusiast group of over 50 members. The English-speaking male and female group - made up of riders and passengers – enjoy a ride out at least every other weekend in the summer months, winding the forgotten country corners and the cool coastal routes. The routes are well planned, with coffee and lunch stops on the way. Last Sunday’s ride, which I was lucky enough to be invited out on, saw around 18 members of the group meet in Pedreguer and once introductions had been made and Press Officer Peter Emmett finally managed to group everyone together for a photo amongst the banter and chatter, President and Road Captain Barry Haylor ran through the day’s 200-kilometre route up to Alzira (Valencia) and back. It wasn’t long before we were on our way as I rode pillion with Peter (thank you, Liz – I hope you enjoyed watching Wimbledon!) and Barry led us to Gandia via the N-332 then through Barx where we took a coffee stop at Restaurante La Vister. Winding up and down the mountains out of Barx and onto Simat, we were spoilt with stunning views reaching as far as the eye can see, heading to Rafelguaraf before joining the CV-5930 onto Carcaixent. The group sat down to lunch at La Cantina in Alzira and we were most pleasantly surprised, given the 34-degree heat, to be gently sprinkled with a cool mist as we enjoyed excellent service with a smile. Back on the road, bikers filtered off as they took their own routes home and I was truly sad that the day had come to an end. Not only was the ride an experience I’ll never forget but all the Free Spirits members were friendly, fun and the day wasn’t without many a laugh. Free Spirits in its current form launched last January and the group and its rides are administered and regulated by five road captains. Members must own a Harley Davidson and of course, be able to evidence their corresponding licence and insurance. The Harley Davidson biking community has made a name for itself in recent years having raised in excess of €54,000 euros for the children of EMAUS and Make A Smile. In the coming weeks, Free Spirits will be announcing its chosen charity for the next 12 months. Wild wild west success U3A Marina Baixa member Colin Butterfield wrote to RTN to say a ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone involved in the western-themed Garden Party held recently in the garden of U3A Marina Baixa Secretary Joan Flint and husband Bill: ‘Some 93 members attended the western-themed Garden Party in the lovely garden of our Secretary, Joan Flint and her husband Bill. A lot of hard work went into the event, much of it behind the scenes before the day. Joan works tirelessly to make these events a success and is backed up by a hard-working committee - and their spouses too. There was also lots of help from non-committee members. As for the meal, there was a platter of bread, meats and cheese for starters. This was followed by a main course of either ‘cow pie’, sausage and beans or chicken, with potatoes and vegetables. For desserts - well again lots of choice and all were delicious, many of them made by the committee and members! A raffle was held as is customary, then when it was dark, candles were lit on every table and prizes were awarded for the best male and female costumes. Challenging games followed, plus a pictorial quiz, where the clues were all around the garden. All evening Rob played music with a country and western theme. The evening then dwindled away as people gradually wended their way home. Another great event! A busy season ahead for the English choir The English Choir of Teulada-Moraira have had a very busy and successful year so far. The season ended with the choir taking a very full part in the town’s Moors and Christian Fiesta. The president of the choir, Sue Elles, said that they were delighted and indeed honoured to be asked to participate in such an important event for the fourth year running. The choir opened the fiesta with a concert in the beautiful parish church located in the centre of Moraira. It was a very varied programme, commencing with excerpts from “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and Karl Jenkins “Adiemus”accompanied by flute and drum solos. Continuing with Abba favourites some Spanish traditional songs and ending with a stirring rendition of Les Miserable’s after which the packed audience rose to its feet in a standing ovation. The following Saturday saw the choir singing from the ramparts of Moraira castle as backing for the very exciting re-enactment battle depicting the Moors expulsion from Spain. After a well earned summer break the choir will return to their rehearsal room in Teulada with renewed vigour .An exciting Autumn/winter programme is planned which includes a concert in aid of the Anglican Chaplaincy’s charitable causes, entertainment for Alzheimer’s day centre members .The choir’s own, ever popular, Autumn concert will take place in November it is entitled “A Little Light l Music ”and will include some of the fun numbers of Sullivan, Sondheim and Sting .Verdi and Bizet also feature as do excerpts from “The Phantom of the Opera” “The Merry Widow “and “Fiddler on the Roof” Sounds like a marvellous evening with something for every-body! Go veggie to lose weight Any vegetarians, living or visiting Spain up to around ten years ago, will appreciate how much has changed for non meat eaters in those intervening years. I can vividly remember scanning menus in restaurants desperately looking for something other than tortilla or gazpacho to quell my grumbling, empty stomach. Even ordering a sandwich vegetal, had its inevitable pitfalls, when the waiter would ask if you wanted ham or tuna on it, then look in horror and disbelief, like you were from another planet, when you told him you wanted neither. These days, following a growing trend from younger Spaniards who are eschewing meat in their diet, the choice for vegetarians is whilst nowhere near the same as in other European countries, at least a lot better than it used to be. More and more people are switching to a vegetarian diet as new research suggests, it could have a whole host of health benefits, including weight loss. People who go vegetarian not only lose weight more effectively than those on carnivorous low-calorie diets, but also improve their metabolism by reducing muscle fat, a new study has found. Losing muscle fat improves glucose and metabolism so this finding is particularly important for people with metabolic syndrome - the medical term for a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity - the researchers said. Lead author Dr Hana Kahleová, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible

Medicine in Washington DC, also said the finding could have a significant impact on Type 2 diabetes. More than 70 people with Type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to follow either a vegetarian diet or a conventional anti-diabetic diet throughout the study. The vegetarian diet was primarily vegan, consisting of vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits and nuts, with animal products limited to a maximum of one portion of low-fat yoghurt per day; the conventional diabetic diet followed the official recommendations of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Both diets contained the same amount of calories per day.

The vegetarian diet was found to be almost twice as effective in reducing body weight, resulting in an average loss of 6.2kg compared to 3.2kg for the conventional diet. The team then studied fatstorage tissue in the subjects’ thighs to see how the two different diets had affected subcutaneous, subfascial and intramuscular fat (that is, fat under the skin, on the surface of muscles and inside muscles). They found that both diets caused a similar reduction in subcutaneous fat. However, subfascial fat was only reduced in response to the vegetarian diet, and intramuscular fat was more greatly reduced by the vegetarian diet. This is important as increased subfascial fat in patients with Type 2 diabetes has been associated with insulin resistance, so reducing it could have a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism. In addition, reducing intramuscular fat could help improve muscular strength and mobility, particularly in older people with diabetes. Dr Kahleová said: “Vegetarian diets proved to be the most effective diets for weight loss. However, we also showed that a vegetarian diet is much more effective at reducing muscle fat, thus improving metabolism. “This finding is important for people who are trying to lose weight, including those suffering from metabolic syndrome and/or Type 2 diabetes. But it is also relevant to anyone who takes their weight management seriously and wants to stay lean and healthy.” The research is published in full in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Are you starting to stress out about a receding hair-line? Then good news may be around the corner as a team of scientists in the US have made a breakthrough that could lead to a new way of growing hair. The method focuses around identifying immune system cells that play a key role in hair growth, and the function of 'hair triggers' that can stimulate hair follicles. The studies have been encouraging as androgenic alopecia, otherwise known to barbers as male-pattern baldness, accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men and two-thirds of men find themselves adjusting their grooming accordingly by the age of 35; that is unless the new science quickly plays catch-up. Master Barber, Stel Nicolaou, shares some of his tips and advice to aid with the ‘battle of the baldness’. It could be a hairy trip! Be vigilant Keep an eye out for hair loss early on, whether that's hair on the pillow, or in the plug hole of the shower. Androgenic alopecia results from a by-product of testosterone blocking the hair follicle, and can therefore strike at an early age when testosterone production is high. “Men can begin to notice hair thinning from the earlytwenties,” says Nicolaou. “Sticking to a good routine early on will ensure you create a good environment for hair growth.” Bad shower habits In and out the shower in minutes? That’s fine if people find themselves late for work or an appointment, but it pays to invest time in a shower routine. Spend at least a few minutes working the suds into the hair and scalp. “This stimulation improves blood flow directly to the scalp, so make sure you are giving your head a thorough massage,” Nicolaou says.

Don’t delay in taking action When it comes to the best styles for thinning hair, men are often tempted by longer cuts in hope that it will appear fuller. But give these misconceptions short shrift. “Shorter cuts work better because they help to seamlessly blend lengths, making the thinner areas less obvious,” Nicolaou advises. Reconsider shaving your head to disguise balding (otherwise known as ‘the reverse combover’) too – it just isn’t necessary. Poor haircut choice A good barber will know how to work with whatever hair is presented to them, but it doesn’t hurt to arrive armed with ideas. “If you are losing hair from the crown, a rough crop about 1-2 inches on top, styled with a good matte product can help to disguise thinning. Avoid partings too because they accentuate sparser areas. Instead, maximise on texture to help give the illusion of thickness and bulk.”

Wrong styling products Oil-slick hair is not the answer. Opt for lightweight, matte-effect products, as they help hair to look lustrous while going easy on the grease. Use no more than a 2p-sized amount of product.

Rooney delighted to have the blues again IN THE light of Wayne Rooney’s shock return to Everton from his previous 13-year home of Manchester United, the man himself has said he’s eager to revive his England career. He was axed from new manager Gareth Southgate’s squad earlier this year as a direct result of not playing for Jose Mourinho’s side. Rooney is England’s all-time top goal scorer with 53 but hasn’t donned the Three Lions shirt since last November in the World Cup qualifying fixture against Scotland when he was replaced by some more in-form strikers. Throughout the 2016-17 domestic season, Rooney only scored eight goals in the 39 matches he played, often being on the substitutes bench after losing out to some of Manchester United’s new signings and younger players. Returning to his boyhood club, the 31-year old is hopeful of a happier international future. “I love playing for England,” Rooney told reporters during his first press conference for Everton on Monday. “Of course Gareth had to make a decision... I wasn’t playing the football that I like and I don’t think you should play for

your country if you are not playing for your club. “He told me that, if I get back playing every week, then the door is still open. I want to play for England. I am focused on Everton, getting back playing and doing well and, if I do well, Gareth Southgate will have a decision to make.” Rooney, who has played 119 times for England and just six short of Peter Shilton’s England record of 125, also said that if he’d gone to play for a Chinese club, which had been muted recently, he would have given up all ambition to return to football at international level. “If I had gone to China, which was an option, then I would have called it a day. It’s the time difference, the difference in the standard of the league,” Rooney added. Rooney’s performance at this recent press conference reminded many of his first appearance on a January evening in 2003 as he signed for Everton at the tender age of 17. A combination of nerves, a state of total unpreparedness and the blinding flashes of cameras led to an almost unintelligible show. His manager at the time, David Moyes, told him

He knew that it would almost impossible for his parents, Wayne Snr and Jeanette, to keep it in but he was more concerned about what his son would do if he knew in advance. “I didn’t tell Kai [his eldest son] either because he was going to school and I didn’t want him speaking to his mates,” Rooney explained. “It was literally once everything was agreed and the paperwork was through that I told everyone. Kai just jumped on me. It was the happiest I’ve ever seen him. My dad, too. Obviously he’s an Evertonian and he’s been going to Manchester to watch me for the last 13 years. Forum Golf Murray crashes out Society report but tips British success Sir Andy Murray backed fellow British star Johanna Konta to win Wimbledon after he was unceremoniously dumped out of the men’s singles. The defending champion and two-time winner said he had tried his best “right to the end” after losing to American Sam Querrey on Centre Court. Murray’s surprising defeat comes one day after Konta became the first British woman to make it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1978 who was defending her title. World number one and top seed Murray failed to emulate her success, losing 6-3 4-6 7-6 1-6 1-6 to Querrey, ranked 28th. Looking tired and shell-shocked after his defeat he said: “It’s tough today. It would have been tough regardless of Jo’s results. You know, I hope she goes on to win the tournament. She’s certainly got a fantastic chance.” He said his fellow Briton Konta had played “extremely well under a lot of pressure”, adding: “She keeps playing like that, there’s no reason why she can’t do it - hopefully she goes on to win.” Earlier on, the capacity 13,000 crowd on the Centre Court propelled and encouraged Murray on as he attempted to cement a spot in the semi-finals but could not get him over the finish line. He appeared to struggle with his mobility throughout the match during the final stages was often seen clutching his hip that many have known had bothered him before the tournament got underway. There was even a doubt that he wouldn’t step on to the grass of SW19 to defend his title at all. “Throughout the whole tournament I’ve been a little bit sore. But I tried my best right to the end, gave everything I had. I’m proud about that,” said Sir Andy. “But it’s obviously disappointing to lose at Wimbledon. There’s obviously an opportunity there, so I’m sad that it’s over.” Murray stated that the match had been “tough” but insisted he was not “a million miles away from winning the match”. He concluded: “The end was a bit of a struggle but I almost found a way to get into the semis. I wasn’t that far away from doing that.” Overall, it’s been a successful fortnight so far for British singles hopefuls Murray and Konta. Their success in the fourth round on Monday marked the first time for a generation that a British man and woman have made it through to the quarter-finals since Roger Taylor and Virginia Wade in 1973. If Murray had won a place in the semi-finals, it would have been the first time for 50 years that Britain had a man and a woman in the last four of the singles. In 1967, they were Roger Taylor and Ann Jones, with Taylor losing his match in five sets and Jones making it through to the final where she lost to legend Billie-Jean King.

A BUSY and varied month for members of the Forum Golf Society. Starting on the 9th June we held the annual Northerners versus Southerners pairs matchplay. The Southerners have held the upper hand for a number of years and maintained their winning streak this year with a 7-3 victory. The fun, and to one of our pairs the apparent complexity, of the Traffic light Texas scramble on the 16th June was enjoyed by seven teams. A standard scramble format with a minimum of 4 drives by each player coupled with alternating tees Blue-Yellow-Red saw John Bridgen, Gary Blake and Dave White take the win with a nett score of 56.2. 30th June was back to a standard stableford competition which saw some good scores in what was a blustery day including a maiden podium position for our newest member John Kimberley. Root passes first test Golf is Open with Cook’s help for debate NEW ENGLAND cricket captain Joe Root may well have enjoyed his debut as skipper by leading his team to an emphatic 211 run victory in the First Test Match against South Africa at Lord’s earlier this week, but it was his predecessor that enjoyed it even more. Opening batsman Alastair Cook, who resigned as Test captain back in February after a successful four and a half years at the helm and 59 Tests in charge that included two Ashes series victories, appears to be having the time of his life now the burdens of captaincy have been removed from his shoulders. After the Lord’s success, England’s Head Coach Trevor Bayliss said that Cook was certainly more relaxed in his new role. “I was having a laugh watching him in the field, running around in the covers,” he said. “He looked like he was enjoying it. For someone at this stage of

his career, that’s a good sign.” Bayliss also commented that new boy Root was nervous before the match began. “Before this test he (Root) was a little more on edge than I’ve seen him before. We spoke about Joe being himself, getting the message across in his way. He’s proactive and confident and I thought that came across in the way he led the team. Root and Cook are different characters; they go about their batting in different fashion, so the dressing room was a little different. A lot of the messages were similar, just delivered in a different way.” Joe Root himself said that is was more than beneficial to him having the former captain in the team during his first Test in charge. “He (Cook) didn’t want to step on my toes and get in the way but it was great to have him around. I think it was nice for him to look at situations without having to make the decisions himself. It was really good of him to offer support and help when I needed it.” The 26-year-old Yorkshireman was delighted to put in an individual performance of note with his first innings 190, and is keen for his side to maintain their high standards when the second Test starts at Trent Bridge today (Friday). “It was nice to walk across Lord’s (after the post-match press conference) and have that feeling of pride, accomplishment and relief as well as getting off to a good start,” he added. “But I am fully aware that there is a lot of hard work to come. I had a little celebration (after the first Test win) nothing too big. That was a very untypical English wicket and I thought we adapted to it well. It will be interesting to see what Trent Bridge has in store for us.”

Valldigna Golf Society Monthly Stableford Competition at La Galiana

As usual, the camaraderie was in tip top form along with the golf at the Valldigna Golf Society’s latest event. La Galiana was in spectacular shape, with slick greens and plenty of rough to catch any of the wayward balls, of which there were many on this occasion but not as many as there used to be. New members are always welcome to join the Society and this month a warm welcome was extended to both Brian Smith and Carl Randall. And so to the roll of honour for this month: From the members, first place went to Hans Benzler with 39 points, runner-up was Mark Wynnick with 36 points and ‘bronze medal’ spot went to David Kerr who was only a

single shot behind on 35 points. The guest prizes for July went to the two new boys, with the said Brian Smith in first place with a very respectable 31 points and in second place, first timer Carl Randal with 26 points. One of England’s all-time greatest golfers, Sir Nick Faldo, has joined in the long-running debate in his usual direct and somewhat sarcastic style over what to call one of the world’s principal golf tournaments. As the 146th playing for the famous Claret Jug begins next Thursday (20th) the argument as whether it should be called the British Open, the Open Championship or simply the Open rages on. Sir Nick and the USA’s Johnny Miller, two of golf’s doyens, allowed their own opinions out in ‘the open’ during a recent interview on the NBC/Golf Channel. One of the reporters asked Miller if he refers to the tournament as “the Open Championship.” As is par for the course, Nick Faldo couldn’t resist joining in. “The Open Championship is incorrect. It’s now the Open,” Faldo said, explaining that the tournament’s recent re-branding as simply the Open. “You see? It’s gone from the British Open, the Open Championship, now it’s the Open.” Miller quickly interjected, admitting he’s still confused by it all, but that it was always known as the British Open during his playing days and that’s what he still calls it now he’s one of the most recognisable commentators on American television. “I have trouble with it,” Miller said. “I screwed up one time last year, if you call it a screw-up, which is pretty good in four days.” Not for the first time, Sir Nick had the final word. “In another five years it will be just called ‘The.’” Miller tips Japanese Open breakthrough Ahead of whatever the forthcoming tournament is to be known as, one of its previous winners, Johnny Miller has picked Hideki Matsuyama as the early favourite to win at Royal Birkdale and become Japan’s first major winner. Miller, who won the title at the same Merseyside course in 1976, said that picking a champion was even tougher than usual in view of the worrying form of several of the sport’s biggest names as they prepare for the four days of golf. “The real hot shots, like Dustin Johnson and Rory (McIlroy) and Jason Day... they’re not on the top of their game right now,” Miller said, also adding Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas to that list. “So I don’t know what to expect, because majors are a whole different animal but Hideki, I think he’s the best player right now. Tournament in and tournament out his bad shots are really good, which is what you need at Birkdale. And I think that he’s ready to win.” Miller reflected on his own success 41 years ago. “I think Royal Birkdale is one of my favourite courses, especially my favourite links, because we deem it a little fairer, the fairways are a little flatter but the sand dunes are fantastic and very demanding. I’m excited to go back there and sort of see if my memory resurrects. I believe it’s an accuracy course. The reason why I won the Open in ‘76 is my caddie literally made me hit a one-iron. I hit a one-iron 12 out of the 14 tee shots.”
