The event was attended by Murcia Mayor - Jose Ballesta, the Project Director of Proyecto Hombre Murcia – Asuncion Santos de Pascual, the President of Patronato Fundacion Solidaridad y Reinsercion – Tomas Zamora Ros and the General Director of Health and Addictions – Jose Carlos Vicente Lopez. Proyecto Hombre Murcia reports to have helped 1,539 users through its various treatment programmes in 2016 and educated over 5,600 young people of the dangers of addiction, be it alcohol, drugs or tobacco through its work with schools and organisations. The organisation was founded in 1995 in response to the rising number of addictions in the Region of Murcia. Since then, it has expanded its offering of programmes to respond to the different demands of society. Proyecto Hombre Murcia now offers six treatment programmes, three prevention programs and a family support programme.

The strictest beach in Spain is on the Costa Blanca by Tahnee Wright The beaches of San Pedro del Pinatar will become the strictest of the entire Spanish coast on July 18 as the new ‘ordenanza de Uso y Disfrute de las Playas’ (ordinance on the use and enjoyment of beaches) will enter into force. The ordinance prohibits, amongst other limitations, the playing of ball sports on the beach or in the sea – with fines of up to €750 for anyone found to be disobeying. Municipal police may impose similar fines for anyone urinating on the beach or in the sea (however the ordinance does not clarify how officers will prove this) and anyone found to be reserving space on the beach in the morning with towels and umbrellas. Also prohibited are animals on the beach and bicycles on the seafront. Anyone found to be littering on the beach will be fined up to €750 along with anyone making improper use of the footbath, removing sand from the beach or washing in the sea with soap. The most controversial measure has been the banning of nudity on ALL
beaches, especially given the Pintarenese coast offers nudist beaches such as La Llana – away from the rest at the end of the Parque Regional de las Salinas. The ban has sparked outrage with La Federacion Espanola de Naturismo (The
Spanish Federation of Naturism), who intend on denouncing the Consistory on grounds of prevarication. The Federation claim the Consistory to be ‘criminalising the human body’ said President, Ismael Rodrigo.
Lucky to be alive Two people were lucky to come away with only slight injuries after being involved in a car crash in Murcia last Friday. The incident occurred on carretera de Alcantarilla as the car travelled at high speed, catching one of the barriers on the road. The driver lost control of the car as it careered into an orchard, flipping several times. Despite the car being almost destroyed, the two people inside were only slight injured and Murcia’s Policia Local even joked about the incident on their official Twitter page, posting a photo of the car wreckage and likening it to the ‘Batmobile’.

Manhunt: British man arrested after brutal unprovoked attack GUARDIA CIVIL officers swooped in following a 72 hour manhunt, to arrest a 34 year old British holidaymaker. by Andy Mansell The man is suspected of attacking a young Spanish guy, with a single karate chop at last weekend’s Moors and Christians fiesta in Rojales. The twenty eight year old victim, who had travelled to the event from his home town of San Fulgencio, was attacked from behind by an assailant, wearing shorts, T shirt and flip flops, who immediately fled the scene. Witnesses to the incident, which occurred around 4am last Saturday morning in one of the kabila refreshment tents, reported that the man fell to the floor in an unconscious state, after receiving a brutal single karate chop to the middle of his back. The victim suffered a heavy blow to his head in the attack, which appeared to be totally unprovoked as there had been no previous fight or exchange of words between the two men. He was taken immediately by ambulance to a hospital in Torrevieja but was later transferred to Alicante General Hospital owing to the severity of his condition. The Guardia immediately launched a manhunt for his attacker, who they described as being of athletic build, whilst the young victim remained in a coma,
caused by the injuries to his head, with doctors fearing for his life owing to his critical condition. After a 72 hour search for the assailant, the Guardia Civil released a photograph, which showed them leading an unnamed British man, described as a tourist, away in handcuffs, from a location in Formentera de Segura, close to the scene of the attack. A Guardia Civil statement issued to Spanish press said, “The Guardia Civil in Alicante arrested a 34-yearold British man on Tuesday in Formentera de Segura. “He was held on suspicion of an attack on a 28year-old Spanish man in Rojales. “The victim of the assault is in a very serious condition in hospital after being placed in an induced coma pending more information on the evolution of the head injury he suffered. “Guardia Civil officers have managed to establish the whereabouts of this British man, who was on holiday in Spain, in just 72 hours.” The suspect remains in custody after an appearance before an investigating judge, whilst the Victim remains in an induced coma to rest his brain after surgeons at the Alicante hospital performed a life-saving operation. The next 48 hours have been described as vital.

13-strong drug trafficking ring bust Operation 'Los Toreros' began last year as the Guardia Civil and the National Police joined forces to dismantle a drug trafficking ring in Cartagena and La Union. The operation was successfully closed at the end of June following a string of arrests as the ringleader was finally caught and imprisoned. ‘Los Toreros’ leaves 13 detainees to stand trial, nine of whom are being held in custody. The narcotics team at the National Police Station in Cartagena began their investigations last November after receiving reports of an intermediate cocaine trafficking operation having been set up by a local bullfighter and several of his cousins. The groups ‘star product’, as head of the narcotics team - Deputy Inspector Ruiz confirmed, was cocaine although on some occasions they also sold heroin. The narcotics team’s investigations were at an advanced level but a turn of events came in April as several members of the group including the ringleader were alleged to have been involved in a gunfight in Sangonera la Verde. The gunfight caused the National Police - who were already following the movements of the group – to call in assistance from the Guardia Civil. In May, officers raided eight houses in Lo Campano, Jose Maria la Puerta, Los Dolores and La Union. They found more than three kilograms of cocaine, in addition to jewellery, frequency inhibitors, firearms and several mobile phones. In this first blow, eight members of the ring were arrested with four of them held in custody. Going forward, operation ‘Los Toreros’ was focused on locating and capturing the ringleader and his cousins and on June 22, officers raided his home along with several others. In this last phase of the operation, the five final men of the ring were arrested - many of them with a history of drug trafficking offences – and they remain in custody along with the other four members awaiting trial.

Arrested for kidnapping and raping a woman he’d just met by Tahnee Wright The National Police of Murcia recently arrested a 42-year-old man for the alleged sexual assault and illegal detention of a woman he had just met in Murcia. The victim was finally able to flee from the man after he fell asleep, but not before being held against her will for over 24 hours. The investigation began at the end of June when a 54-year-old woman reported to San Andres District Commissariatthe horrific ordeal she was put through at the hands of a man she had met some two days prior in La Glorieta. Officers learnt how the man had invited her to have a drink with him and she obliged. The victim reported that after drinking said drink, she completely lost consciousness. As she began to regain consciousness, she found herself in an underground parking facility near the Restos de la MurallaArabe with the man.
The man is alleged to have held the victim there for a day and a half against her will, during which time he is alleged to have sexually assaulted her on several occasions, even threatening to kill her and taking her mobile phone from her so she could not call for help. The victim was only able to flee from the man after he fell asleep – she was found on the street by a police patrol vehicle and was taken to the local health centre where she underwent examination. Analysing the report, officers found similarities with an incident which took place almost a year ago and presented the woman with a photograph of the suspected perpetrator. The victim immediately recognised the man and officers ordered his arrest. He was found in the underground parking facility where he committed the alleged crimes, along with several personal items belonging to the victim, including her mobile phone. The judge left the defendant free with a restraining order from the victim until examination results are returned.
Nudity confusion
SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR town hall has angered a national naturist group by banning nudity on all beaches within its municipality. The ban is part of a raft of beach rules brought in for the Summer, which also include fines for playing bat and ball on the beach and urinating in the sea, which are classed as causing a nuisance to other bathers. The Spanish Naturism Federation plans to take legal action against the town hall for abuse of power. It says nudism cannot be banned on naturist beaches without a State law being passed first. “San Pedro del Pinatar is the first town in Spain to ban nudism on every single one of its beaches – and the others who do so, just 10 in the whole country, only ban naked bathing on urban beaches,” the Federation complains. The only naturist beach in the vicinity is the fairly remote La Llana, which has been recognised by locals and visitors alike and is far enough away from town as to not cause offence to passers-by.
Now, those who regularly use the beach to sunbathe naked are concerned that they will have to cover up in the future or be faced with a 750€ fine. Other restrictions within the ‘Beach Law’ include a fine of 750€ for urinating in the sea and a ban on beach blocking, in other words, reserving spaces on the beach with towels and chairs in advance of use. Unlicenced barbecuing on the beach attracts a 1500€ fine and unauthorised beach sellers, plying their trade of cold drinks and snacks face a fine of 3000€. Taking animals onto the beach is included in the prohibited activities plus the taking of stereos or other musical devices such as MP3 players, iPods or using mobile phones for the same purpose is also against the rules 'provided the decibel level does not exceed established limits. Cycling on the seafront promenade, on pushbikes or tandems, is banned and subject to fines, as are surfing or other water sports in the direct bathing area, and no boats of any description within 200 metres of the shoreline.

RIP Adrian
The young Murcian boy who fell into a swimming pool in the region last summer passed away on Monday this week, unable to fight the devastating effects of the accident any longer. Adrian, son of Fran Guzman and Mamen Solis was just four-years-old when he fell into a swimming pool at a Murcian sports centre in August last year. His brain was deprived of oxygen for too long and he suffered acquired brain injury (ABI), leaving him lying flat in a wheelchair. Adrian was first taken to the paediatric intensive care unit of Hospital Clinico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca before being transferred two and a half months later to Hospital del Nino Jesus in Madrid, where a rehabilitation unit for children suffering acquired brain injury opened in May 2016. Tributes flooded the Facebook page dedicated to Adrian – ‘Captain Adrian has decided to sail to the sky to live a better life. We are very proud of you, you have been an example of struggle and desire to live!’ said a friend of the family. Our thoughts are with the family.

Alicante Police rescue dying dog by Andy Mansell OFFICERS from the Alicante police canine unit, were called in to rescue a young dog from a parked car in Alicante. Neighbours had reported seeing the dog in the locked vehicle, parked in full sun, for around four hours, becoming more and more distressed, owing to lack of ventilation and temperatures approaching 35 degrees. The canine officers were able to break into the car to rescue the animal, who was on the brink of suffocation and hyperventilation. Police sources have verified to Spanish press, that the dog was in conditions of neglect , was on the verge of asphyxia, without ventilation, with temperatures above 35 degrees, so they proceeded to rescue it by breaking the rear window of the vehicle to release it. The police have opened judicial proceedings and reported the owner who is charged with an alleged crime of animal abuse. Meanwhile the vehicle, which had no insurance and no ITV, was taken by grua to the local car depository. Photos of the now recovered one year old dog, have been released in an effort to find a new family to take him on, asking interested parties to contact their local police. The department of security have stressed that leaving an animal locked in a parked car, without adequate ventilation, is risking the animals life. Offenders will also receive severe fines and bans on having animals in future.

Costas need to clean up their act by Tahnee Wright Beach volleyball players from Torrevieja have spent the past two weeks collecting hundreds of nails and screws from the city’s beaches – remnants of the hundreds of pallets burnt on bonfires as partygoers celebrated San Juan on June 23. The nails and screws are dangerous for beachgoers as well as volleyball players – who play barefoot in the sand. The need to collect the nails and screws, which were not collected when the beaches were ‘cleaned’ after the festival is even more pressing as a volleyball championship competition is scheduled to take place on Los Naufragos beach this weekend. At least one of the volleyball players has suffered injuries – a member of the children’s team having had to have a nail removed from their foot. The players have circulated a warning on social media regarding the nails and screws. Councillor of Beaches Javier Manzanares confirmed that in recent days, the municipal cleaning company has intensified its action in the area, despite the beaches being the responsibility of the Costas.
Fruit boost backed by Murcians
THE Regional Assembly of Murcia is supporting an initiative from the fruit industry to nominate 12 July as ‘European Fruit Day’ in a bid to boost consumption, creating social and economic benefits for the region. The initiative - born by the European Parliament with the support of Proexport, agricultural unions and regional cooperatives - will now be put before the national government. Murcia leads the way in Spanish melon exports, shipping 227,438 tonnes in 2016 or 51 per cent of the national total. Although volumes were down slightly compared to the previous year, in value terms they increased by 9.5 per cent to €158.5 million. France was the leading destination, followed by Germany and the UK. In watermelons, Murcia exported 161,546 tonnes last year with a value of €67.9 million, an increase of 10.7 per cent on the previous year. Much of this increase was due to a rise in consumption fuelled by the development and greater availability of seedless varieties. Germany is the main destination for watermelons from Murcia, followed by the UK, Netherlands and France. The region is also a major exporter of stone fruit and table grapes during the summer months.

More than 6,000 stevedores participated in the month-long strike
by Tahnee Wright Spain's more than 6,000 stevedores called time on their month-long nationwide strike last Thursday in which they protested potential job losses in the wake of the ports reform. The workers stopped striking after reaching a deal with employers that protects jobs but lowers salaries. The ports reform was demanded by the European Union and passed through parliament in mid-May, deregulating the hiring of dock workers. Under the previous system, domestic or foreign companies could only hire workers to load and unload ships in Spain from specific, already-established organisations that provide personnel and no other firms. The ports reform allows companies to contract workers wherever they want
- which employers argue will increase the competitiveness of Spanish ports. Unions argued the ports reform threatened jobs. A meeting in Madrid between labour unions and industry association Anesco ‘resulted in an agreement between the parties’, the two sides said in a joint statement. Anesco member firms have pledged to protect the jobs of ‘100 percent of the workers’ who load and unload ships at Spanish ports, the statement added. In exchange for keeping their jobs the unions accepted a reduction in the wages of the dockers of ‘up to 10 percent’, a member of the UGT Estiba union told the Spanish press. Man extradited from Spain on sexual assault charges does a runner
A man who was charged with sexual assault after being extradited to Ireland from Spain failed to appear in court last week and a warrant for his arrest has now been issued. The man was charged last year with sexual assault against one victim, which is alleged to have occurred more than 20 years ago. He had been questioned last year by police in Spain, where he was living and escorted back to Ireland last April to face charges. In 2016, his solicitor told the court that his client denied all charges. On June 26 this year, the man was due back in the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, but he failed to appear in court. His solicitor confirmed to the Irish press that his client did not turn up for court last week and that a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Irish police are now trying to establish the man’s whereabouts.

Arrested ‘Most dangerous jihadist in Spain’ A Danish man arrested in Spain on suspicion of fighting with Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists in Syria was planning to buy weapons in the country, the interior ministry said on Monday. Ahmed Samsam, 27, who was detained last Friday in Malaga and put under official investigation last weekend, is suspected of having fought in the ranks of ISIS for more than three years. In a statement, the ministry said photos posted on social networks showed him holding weapons and explosives, along with symbols of the jihadist group, whose control over parts of Syria and Iraq is being eroded by US-backed fighters in Syria and Iraqi forces respectively. ‘An expert in handling weapons and explosives, he was about to acquire weapons and bulletproof vests in Spain,’ it said. Police have not said whether the suspect planned to commit an attack in Spain. The interior ministry said last Saturday that officers were searching seized equipment in order to shed light on his intentions and find out who he had been in contact with. According to the ministry, Samsam's relatives thought ‘he was ready to take a step further in his terrorist activity in Europe’. ‘The fact that he returned from a conflict zone, combined with his experience in using arms and explosives, as well as the important degree of radicalisation and his current interest in buying weapons make him one of the most dangerous jihadists among those arrested in Spain,’ it said.
Three UK NHS buildings fail fire safety tests
ThE British National Health Service said on Tuesday that three of its organisations had reported having buildings which had failed safety tests launched after the devastating fire in London social housing block Grenfell Tower killed at least 80 people. ‘Samples of ACM (aluminium composite material) cladding taken from three providers have failed combustibility tests,’ said NHS Improvement, which oversees NHS trusts serving particular regions. ‘The three providers that have failed ACM tests are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of those buildings and occupants, in line with updated fire safety guidance issued by NHS Improvement,’ it said in a statement.

Spain's Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis says that all European Union members need to discuss Italy's proposal for other countries in the bloc to open their ports to ships carrying rescued migrants. Dastis told the Spanish press in Madrid on Monday that ‘our position is that exceptional situations require exceptional measures as a response, but they need to be discussed among all countries.’ taly has pleaded for help as thousands of migrants and refugees pour onto its shores. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, condemned an ‘unfolding tragedy’ in the country. Dastis added that Spain ‘hasn't received a formal request’ top open its ports. He said that he expected the issue to be discussed by EU interior ministers and foreign ministers at separate meetings later this week.

Men take on the cobbles in Madrid WorldPride race by Tahnee Wright Men taped stiletto-heeled shoes to their feet and raced down a narrowcobbled street in Madrid last Thursday as part of the city's WorldPride festival, one of the world's largest LGBT pride celebrations.
Competitors in the annual maleonly event ran under rainbow bunting, cheered on by crowds clutching pink balloons who lined the street in Chueca, a gay neighbourhood in the capital. Rules state that mens' heels must be at least 10 centimetres (4 inches) high and the shoes are measured before the race.
Many men donned wigs and skirts for the event, while a few increased the challenge by running the 100 metres or so wearing platform boots. The race is part of the WorldPride Madrid festival, which also features concerts and other events to celebrate diversity.
13 women freed from Bulgarian prostitution ring Spanish police reported on Tuesday to have broken up a Bulgarian gang that sought the ‘total control’ of prostitution on the coast of Marbella. The operation, carried out in cooperation with Bulgarian police and the European Union law enforcement agency Europol, led to the arrests of 34 alleged members of the gang and the ‘liberation’ of 13 victims who were forced into prostitution, police said in a statement. The gang is suspected of recruiting young women in deprived areas of Bulgaria - the EU’s poorest country - and bringing them to Spain, forcing them to work as prostitutes in the streets of Puerto Banus, the luxury marina and casino complex near Marbella. ‘If they refused they were violently attacked and their family members in Bulgaria were threatened with harm’ the statement said. Adding that women who had left behind children in Bulgaria were ‘especially sensitive’. Police said the gang also forced the women to steal credit cards and other valuables from clients, suspecting some women of having drugged the men to make this easier. Police began their investigation in September 2014 after a Bulgarian woman told officers in Marbella that she had escaped from people who were forcing her to work as a prostitute. ‘The probe allowed investigators to prove that the first exploiters who were found did not act alone, but were part of an enormous international network that operated mainly in Spain and Bulgaria and whose aim was to achieve the total control of prostitution on the coast of Marbella,’ the police statement said. Officers arrested 26 of the suspected members of the gang in Spain and eight in Bulgaria, searching 36 locations in the two countries.

Trump tweets help to terminally ill UK infant by Staff Reporter U.S. President Donald Trump offered help to terminally ill UK infant Charlie Gard in a Twitter post earlier this week, after Charlie’s parents lost a legal battle to take him to the United States for experimental therapy. 11-month-old Charlie has been at the centre of a long legal battle between his parents, who wanted him to undergo American experimental therapy and specialists at a hospital in London who said the treatment was merely experimental and would not help. ‘If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so,’ Trump tweeted on Monday morning. Charlie suffers from mitochondrial disease - a rare genetic disorder that has left him unable to move his arms, legs or breathe unaided. The disease causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. It was unclear how the U.S. president would propose to help in the case.

Charlie’s parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates launched a fundraising appeal on GoFundMe.com to help pay for his medical bills in the United States. To date, they have raised £1.3 million (€1.48 million) from more than 83,000 donations. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled last month that going to the United States for treatment would prolong Charlie’s suffering without any realistic prospect of helping him. The court would not allow an American doctor found by the couple to be identified and details regarding the therapy were not available.
The parents asked the European Court of Human Rights to overturn the ruling, but the court declined to intervene last week. Trump’s tweet came a day after Pope Francis said: ‘The Holy Father is following the case of little Charlie Gard with affection and emotion and expresses his closeness to his parents. He is praying for them, hoping that their desire to accompany and care for their own child to the end is not ignored,’ according to statement from the Vatican on Sunday. UK Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman, asked about the Trump tweet by the English press, said it was a very sensitive case and their thoughts are with Charlie’s family.

by Andy Mansell Captain Morgans Bar in San Miguel de Salinas, held a fourth of July party this week to celebrate their 4th anniversary and raised 776.50 euros for the Elche Children's Care Home. 127 students get scientific this summer
A total of 127 Murcian students from the first year of Bachillerato and the fourth year of ESO have been selected to participate in the ‘Summer Scientific Campus’. Each student will spend a week developing a scientific project at one of the 16 Spanish universities of excellence attached to the initiative. The initiative has been organised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and the Fecyt, of the Ministry of Economy, with the collaboration of the Obra Social 'la Caixa' and registered over 8,000 applicants. Students will learn about facilities and laboratories in various scientific areas and will carry out a range of fascinating activities including obtaining samples of marine organisms aboard a ship and using drones to study the natural environment.

2017 has been quite the year for Footwork Dance thus far – following a hugely successful Christmas show, the opening of a second studio in Cabo Roig and all students receiving nothing short of exceptional exam results, it was Principal and Owner Erica Dorrill ‘s time to shine… Now qualified as a DDMIX instructor, Erica recently returned to London to train with the DDMIX Dance Team. DDMIX stands for ‘Diverse Dance Mix’, it is a full body aerobic workout based on a wide range of different dance styles with easy to follow steps. DDMIX was created by Darcey Bussell Darcey is one of the most famous British ballet dancers of all time. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and joined the company in 1987. She was promoted to Principal in 1989 at just 20 years old. She retired from The Royal Ballet in 2007 and now supports and documents dance worldwide. She is the President of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), a judge on 'Strictly Come Dancing' and presents The Royal Ballet's worldwide cinema simulcasts, amongst her many activities. DDMIX embraces national dances, eras and genres from around the world. With 26 and grow-

MONDAY last week, will go down in the annals of Mazarron fishing history, as the day that the local fishing fleet broke their previous record for the amount of boquerones, or anchovies, caught in a single day, by a huge margin. The Fishermen's Guild of Mazarron announced that the fisherman who had worked deep into the night to catch a total of 115,000 kilos of fish, beating the previous best days catch of 95,000, by a huge 20,000 fish. Head of the guild, Manuel Sanchez, enthused that the catch included 12,700 corchas, or cases of fish, which fetch an average of 13 for each corcha. A delighted Sanchez said, "In June 2016, we set the previous record, but the last thing I expected was that we were going to get ahead in 2017," he acknowledged yesterday.

€22,000 raised for community vehicle by Tahnee Wright If you have ever wondered what life might be like coping with a disability, especially one so severe that it restricts your movement and your ability to journey out of the house, you might be surprised to learn that there are far more people along the Costa Blanca who struggle with such disabilities than you might imagine, many of whom don’t drive or don’t have access to any form of transport. HELP at Home Costa Blanca is a charitable organisation headquartered in Playa Flamenca. HELP at Home CB has identified the need for a dedicated vehicle that can be used within the local community to provide a transport service to those who need it most. Executive member Eileen Randall said, ‘we are desperately in need of a dedicated vehicle - one that is fitted with all the necessary ramps and mobility equipment, to be driven by a suitably trained team of individuals.’ ‘The members of society who struggle with mental and physical disabilities deserve to enjoy the same quality of life as everyone else - this is precisely why we trying to raise funds for the vehicle. It’s all about social inclusion and attempting to eradicate the sense of isolation that many people with these infirmities regularly experience.’ The vehicle and associated costs will total just over €35,000 and HELP at Home CB recently received a generous donation from Campoverde Theatre Group as they were presented with a €600 cheque from the proceeds of the group’s musical ‘The Good Old Days’ which was performed at The Fiesta Plaza in early May. This donation takes the total raised to €22,000, meaning HELP at Home CB are nearly two thirds of the way toward the target. Whilst similar vehicles do exist on the Costa Blanca the major advantage of the HELP at Home CB vehicle is that it will be available not just to HELP at Home CB members, but to any member of the public with mobility problems that requires its use. The Emerald Isle Weekly Market, held at La Florida every Tuesday (11.00am - 3.30pm) is currently the main source of
fundraising for the vehicle, but with other events on the horizon, including a Grand Event to be held in Villamartin Plaza in September, Eileen is extremely hopeful. ‘We are now on the final lap,’ she continued ‘we are talking to car dealerships, as well as discussing the specifics of exactly what the vehicle needs to have fitted. We are also looking out for drivers, so as to establish a suitably trained team of individuals.’

Car Insurance and Green Card International Insurance Card The Green Card or International Insurance Card is an internationally recognised document that proves the holder has the minimum compulsory insurance required by law of the country visited. It helps facilitate the movement of their vehicle across international borders. It also guarantees that victims of road traffic accidents involving foreign registered vehicles are compensated in the country of the accident. The Green Card System The Green Card System comprises of over 40 countries. National vehicle organisations within the Green Card System including the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, Russia and several countries around the Middle East and North Africa. However, a Green Card is not required to travel through the EEA, Andorra, Norway, Croatia and Switzerland. The Green Card Bureau Each Green Card Bureau is responsible for handling and guaranteeing the settling of claims arising from traffic accidents caused by visiting motorists. Travelling outside the EU If you are travelling outside the European Community to one of the countries listed as requiring a Green Card, you will need to ask your insurance company to issue you a Green Card beforehand. Road accident If you’re involved in a road traffic accident in a country requiring a Green Card, make sure the police are called to the scene of the accident. You will need a copy of the police report. If you don’t understand what you’re being told, request an interpreter. We also advise that you contact your insurance company as soon as possible, whether you want to make a claim or not. Make notes of what happened. Take photographs of the accident, including plates of vehicles involved. Exchange insurance details as you would in Spain. Take down the names and addresses of any witnesses. Never admit liability or apologise.

If you have lost a deposit when a property developer went bust, help may be at hand A COMPANY set up to act for those who have lost money due to Spanish construction company liquidation expects to recover millions of euros for clients. Spanish Legal Reclaims has used a number of highly experienced lawyers and financial experts to study the effects of a law which gives those who have lost money when making deposits on properties a possibility to recover their losses. During the boom years, many expatriates from all over Europe as well as Spanish nationals flocked to put down deposits on properties before they were built, anxious to ensure that they would own a brand new apartment or house. When the depression hit, one of the biggest areas of loss was in the property construction business and many companies all across Spain went under without completing the work and leaving individuals out of pocket from any amounts from €20,000 to €200,000 or even more. When this happened, many of the people affected took legal action against property developers. Most of them won the court cases but, as developers had no money left the claimants received nothing except lawyer’s fees. Most were convinced that these - in many cases devastating – losses were final and there was no chance of ever recovering any of the money involved, but the Spanish Supreme Court which can work slowly, recognised the problem and a relatively recent ruling has opened the door to the possibility of obtaining refunds from the banks involved which do have the funds to pay claimants. It has been decided that if a bank accepted a deposit in respect of a new build property, they had a responsibility to protect those funds by way of bank guarantees, separate insurance policies or placing the funds in escrow accounts. If the bank did this, then money would be safe but if they
didn’t -as happened in most cases -then they can be sued for a refund of that money. This is where Spanish Legal Reclaims comes in as they are prepared to review each case on its merits and if there appears to be a good chance of recovering funds, they will take on the case on a no win no fee basis. Their legal experts and financial advisers will have to undertake a great deal of work to establish liability, especially as many as 60 per cent of all who lost money paid their deposits to lawyers rather than directly to the banks. This company however has established an almost fool proof method of tracing the funds- even if deposits were made more than 10 years ago - and actually establishing which bank was involved in the transaction. So far, acting for a number of people from different countries, the company - which has experts fluent in most languages – has already won several cases in court which are now awaiting appeal from the banks. As the legal system in Spain is slow, they can’t show large numbers of cash refunds although they have had a small number when the banks overlooked making an appeal but they are confident that in the majority of cases, a first decision by a court will be upheld on appeal. They must be confident as all of this work has been done without any charge to customers! Banks are rich and they generally employ the best lawyers but if the law is in favour of the victim and those acting for that victim know what they are doing, the likelihood of success is great. The lack of courtesy and service in some of the business establishments on the Costa is appalling. But there is a rudeness that offends and a rudeness that can sometimes be regarded as amusing and eccentric behaviour, and it reminded me recently of some pub landlords I have encountered in the UK. One landlord in Falmouth had a hatred of Londoners, but nobody seemed to know the reason why.
An acquaintance of mine had a friend visit him from London and took him for a meal at the establishment in question and because of his obvious cockney accent, he was warned about engaging the publican in conversation. After they had eaten, their host made his way over to ask if everything had been to their satisfaction, at which point the Londoner, in spite of his friend’s advice, asked why it was that he disliked people from that city so much. The place went deathly quiet as the landlord, a large man, rested his meaty arms on the table, and almost nose to nose, hissed, “Do you see this”, pointing to his bald head. “Your lot were evacuated here during the war and brought their head lice with ‘em. I had nice curly hair in those days, but I had to have it shaved off and it never grew back. Does that answer your question?” Another publican of my acquaintance in Fowey, had a particular aversion to anyone he termed ‘La-di-da’. He had one of those pie warmers on the counter, the ones with a slowly revolving rack, and when a customer hailed him thus: “I say my man, are those pasties hot?” back came the reply: “They ought t’be boy, they’ve bin in there for three weeks!” Years later in a neighbouring village in Suffolk, there was a character that had become infamous with a Basil Fawlty type reputation. Nevertheless people would come from miles around to eat and drink at his establishment, a very pretty olde worlde inn. We took some friends one evening who had never visited the pub, then having perused the menu one of them asked what the sirloin steak was like. Having just served an adjoining table, the landlord pirouetted and without a word, whipped the plate away from under the startled diner’s nose and plonked it down on our table. “Like that” he said smoothly, before returning the plate to the disbelieving customer. Real characters you see, can get away with it.

Negatives, questions and “you” forms
First of all we need to check last week’s homework. Here are the sentences I asked you to translate, with the right answers. I don’t want to speak English. “No quiero hablar inglés” I’m not going to open the door. “No voy a abrir la puerta” I can’t cook very well. “No puedo cocinar muy bien” I need to work a little. “Necesito trabajar un poco”. The first three sentences are negative and therefore start with “No” despite the fact that in each of the English sentences the negatives are formed in three different ways. Obviously in these articles we can’t hear the spoken sentences, but one thing to point out here is that when one word ends in a vowel sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, they run together when spoken. So “quiero hablar”, would sound like “quieroablar” (as the letter H is silent) and “voy a abrir” would become “voyabrir” with the two “a” sounds merging together. It’s important to get practice at tuning in to spoken Spanish so that you can start recognizing these features of the language. Now let’s see what else we can do with the words we have covered so far. We have learnt that “I words” (QUIERO, PUEDO, NECESITO, VOY A) can go in front of infinitive verbs to form really useful sentences about what we want, need, can or are going to do. We have also seen that by placing the word “no” in front, we can make these sentences negative. Now we are going to see how these same basic forms can be turned into questions. This is incredibly easy; in
fact it’s so easy people are inclined not to believe it and try to complicate things. To make these sentences into questions, all you have to do is give your voice a questioning intonation. When writing we place a question mark at the end and an upside down question mark at the beginning of the sentence, to indicate the same thing. For example: PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA means “I can open the door”. If I say exactly the same sentence making my voice sound questioning, I’ve changed it to “Can I open to the door?” which is written in Spanish ¿PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA? Yes, it really is that simple! Let’s see what else we can do. “PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA” “I can return tomorrow.” “¿PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA?” “Can I return tomorrow?” “PUEDO CAMBIAR MI DINERO” “I can change my money” “¿PUEDO CAMBIAR MI DINERO?” “Can I change my money? “NECESITO TRABAJAR HOY” “I need to work today” “¿NECESITO TRABAJAR HOY? “Do I need to work today?” “NECESITO BEBER MUCHA AGUA” “I need to drink a lot of water” “¿NECESITO BEBER MUCHA AGUA?” “Do I need to drink a lot of water?
Obviously in the case of ¿Quiero? (Do I want?) and ¿Voy a? (am I going to?) it is more difficult to find sentences that make sense, so as a special little bonus to-
day we will learn the words for “You want” and “You are going to” – which can instantly be used to mean “Do you want?” and “Are you going to?” “You want” is “QUIERES” and “you are going to” is “VAS A” so therefore: “Do you want to cook?” is “¿QUIERES COCINAR?” “Are you going to sleep?” is “¿VAS A DORMIR?” Just to recap what we have just done – QUIERO means “I want”, and by changing the final letter we can turn it into QUIERES meaning “you want”. Something similar happens with VOY A “I’m going to”, we can turn it into “VAS A” to mean “you are going to”. I think I should mention as well, that these refer to an informal “you”, as in Spanish we can be formal and informal in the way we address people. However nowadays in Spain these distinctions are not so important so we’ll talk in more detail about that later. This all might sound rather simple, but you may not have yet realized just what potential we have opened up already, just by learning these small changes. It is not necessary to learn all the whys and wherefores of how verbs change in order to start forming all kinds of sentences! So far we have only used six verbs and six “I” or “you” expressions so I think next week we’ll need some more verbs and other simple words to spread the net even wider. In the meantime though – here’s your homework: What do these mean in English? No quiero volver a casa hoy. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? Voy a hablar con mi amigo. ¿Vas a beber vino? No necesito comer ahora. ¿Puedo aprender más? Happy translating and see you next week!

The world has changed beyond recognition in my lifetime. The English novelist L. P Hartley penned those immortal words, “The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.” My generation journeyed in a time machine to a foreign country. Frankly, it is a bewildering place. George Orwell’s novel, 1984, is no longer in the library’s fiction department. In 1949 the prophet accurately described the all-seeing Big Brother mediamanipulated nightmare world we have inherited. Less well known is Edgar Cayce (1877 – 1945). The American mystic’s prophecies were so many and accurate they simply cannot be dismissed as coincidence. His readings accurately foretold the Great Depression of 1929, events relating to both world wars; even the deaths of two U.S Presidents. As these foresights are now in the past they can only be a source of wonder to us. But, it should be a matter of interest that Cayce foretold of events yet to occur. During his readings the seer correctly described our ‘brave new world’. Remember, back then, everything we now take for granted was the stuff of science fiction and fantasy. It was a time when no one could have predicted the collapse of the Soviet colossus. When in 1932 Cayce was questioned about political and economic trends in future Europe he zeroed in on Russia. He saw Europe as a disintegrating region. Cayce also foretold of nations controlled by a manipulative cultish global elite and their banking cartels. The American described a post-Communist Russia as being ‘a thorn in the side of financial powers that were organising them-
selves against the good of humanity.’ He described a Europe of electorally neutered people mismanaged ‘for the gratification of a few, irrespective of any other man’s right’. Can anyone better describe the European Union today? Anti-globalist Marine le Pen sums it up; “the divide is no longer between right and left, but between the patriots and the globalists’. Cayce talked of Europe being reborn phoenix-like and in his prophecies Russia plays a pivotal role. Without question, postCommunist Russia has reinvented itself. Independent and forging the world’s
greatest trading blocs Putin’s Russia outmanoeuvres and outguns the West. Meanwhile, Washington and its European vassals are asphyxiated by perpetual bondage to banks and receivership whilst their trading options diminish by the day. There is nothing that is happening today that wasn’t accurately prophesied by Edgar Cayce. He did predict that a Third World War was possible. But, without elaborating, he said before he passed away, “In Russia there comes hope in the world not as that as sometimes termed of the Communistic, or Bolshevik, no; but freedom, freedom.”

I had the weirdest of dreams last night. More of a nightmare really. In it, the RTN team decided they wanted someone to answer questions they were receiving in ever-increasing numbers from people visiting the Costas. After much debate, it was decided that I should be the one to deal with them. Reluctantly, I agreed. After trawling through a bunch of barmy queries, I bashed out my first “Ask Uncle Barry” column. Tracy, Blackpool: My mum, dad and I got on a bus heading from La Cala to Benidorm central, but the driver refused to take a €50 note. Then a pushy little man with a white goatee shoved us out the way, paid our fares with some sort of travel card, and told us that we could repay him at the end of the journey by buying him tobacco. When we got off the bus, he marched us to a fag shop and made us pay almost €9.00 for a pouch of Golden Virginia. As the total bus fare for the three of us would have been €4.50 we reckon we were ripped off by a conman. Uncle Barry: The “pushy little man”, Tracy, was me. Your dad was holding up the bloody bus, and it didn’t help that he was being extremely rude to the driver. Only an imbecile would tender a €50 note on a bus. Getting your dad to buy me the tobacco was my way of teaching him a lesson. Kayleigh, Bolton: We came to Benidorm at Easter and could not believe how packed the streets were with foreigners. Is there a good time to come to the resort and not have to mix with people all waffling in foreign? Uncle Barry: The last time I checked an atlas, Kayleigh, Benidorm was in Spain. So, not surprisingly, the streets, bars and restaurants were full of SPANISH people. If you only want to hear English spoken I suggest you go to Scarborough for your holidays. Or the Falklands. Tony, Southend: When we were in Torremolinos, the missus threw a shoe at my head as I was standing on the first floor balcony of our holiday apartment. I ducked. It flew into the street and hit a fella with a white goatee on his bald bonce. Instead of throwing it back to me, he walked off with it. It was one of a pair of brand-new loafers. Are all people in Spain so rude?
Uncle Barry: The “fella with a white goatee” was me, Tony. That shoe hurt. I carried it half a mile down the road, and dropped it in a garbage bin. If you feel compelled to have drunken rows with your “missus” in public, expect to suffer the consequences. Chantelle, Barking: I was walking with some friends along the beachfront when a tree came out of nowhere and I was knocked on my butt by a low branch. Can I sue Benidorm council for allowing dangerous impediments to take root in public places? Uncle Barry: You can try, Chantelle, but you’ll find that Spain does not have the same compensation culture as the US and Britain, so you have as much chance of getting a pay-out as the Pope has of falling pregnant. In future, watch where you’re walking! At this point I awoke in a cold sweat, and vowed that if anyone ever asks me to become proper “agony uncle” I’ll take a dive off of my 31st floor balcony.

Unemployment in Spain lowest in 8 years Spain's unemployment figure hit its lowest level in eight years in June, figures from the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security showed on Tuesday. The number of unemployed dropped by 98,317 persons to 3.36 million, which the ministry said was the lowest level in the past eight years. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the decline was 21,668 persons. On a year-on-year basis, the unemployment figure fell by 404,243 persons, which was the largest annual decline for June ever recorded. Unemployment among 15-24-year-old Spanish declined by 16.5 per cent. In June, the construction sector recorded the biggest fall in unemployment. A record 2.1 million job contracts were registered during June, up 8.81 per cent from a year ago. Of these, 166,462 were short-term contracts for temporary jobs, up 12.17 per cent year-on-year. Such contracts have risen for 41 months in a row, the ministry noted. Separately, the ministry announced that the number of those registered within the social security system, viewed as a measure of job creation, rose by 87,692 persons to 18.4 million.

All too often British people living in Spain assume that Spanish banks operate in a similar way to the UK. This may not be the case. Some estate agents suggest that in today’s current market, many people looking to sell a Spanish property will have had to reduce the price of their property to be able to conclude a sale. With all the associated costs and taxes that need to be paid out, maximising the amount of Sterling that you finally receive for your euros is vital. Clients need to be aware of two important factors that can affect you when converting your euros into Sterling and moving those funds out of Spain.
2. Exchange rate and repatriation The agreed sale price of a property is often based on the amount of Sterling that the seller hopes to receive, according to the exchange rate at that time. However, a Notary / completion date can take place some weeks, or even months, after the contract of sale has been signed. This means that sellers could run the risk of the exchange rate moving against them, and thus reducing the amount of Sterling that they receive. For example, with an exchange rate of 1.20, a sale value of 150,000€ will give you £125,000. Should this exchange rate rise to 1.23, a rise of just 3 cents, this would give a return of £121,951, which would mean achieving £3,049 less Sterling. Alicante to Beijing A sclerosis sufferer has cycled the 9,600 km distance from Alicante to Beijing on a static bike positioned on his terrace, to raise funds for research into the disease. Jose Maria Caruana embarked on his challenge to give visibility to the patients of Lateral Amyotrophic Sclerosis (ALS), a disease that he has suffered for 24 years, on New Years day. His ultimate goal is to reach 21,617 km (the figure represents the ALS national day, June 21) on a static bike and get into the Guinness Book of Records. "I have calculated that I must do an average of 60 kilometers a day, in several sessions, to reach the record," Caruana explained Anyone wishing to sponsor Jose Maria, can buy kilometres priced at 3€ each, with which he hopes to raise 30,000€ to help continue research into ALS at the Hospital Octoubre 12 in Madrid. The cyclist, who chairs the Association for research on rare diseases, has opened a channel on Youtube, where every day he records his sessions on a bicycle and then shares them with his followers. He took up the challenge after a friend and fellow sufferer committed suicide last year, "In the video he left before he died, he said,’ Today it is me, but tomorrow it can be you or your family’, and he's right. ", said Juan "I have always been very athletic and now the static bike is the only thing I can do."

APAH Dog show Dog owners in the Vega Baja, should start grooming and training in preparation for the APAH charity’s Fun Dog Show, which takes place on Sunday July 9 at 12.30pm. The venue for this fun event is the all weather marquee, situated close to the sports centre and swimming pool, at the Carpa Municipal in Pilar de la Horadada. Mediterranean diet good for mental and physical health
Inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of Spain, Southern France, Italy, Greece and parts of the Middle East, the Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower mortality rate and reduced chance of developing chronic illness. Now, researchers state that is its also beneficial for mental and physical health too. The diet is characterised by the consumption of fish, olive oil, nuts, pulses, vegetables and fruit. To determine how much the Mediterranean diet impacts quality of life, researchers examined over 11,000 university students over a period of four years. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Navarra, is published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Patricia Henriquez Sanchez, researcher at the centre in the Canary Islands and lead author of the study, said: ‘The progressive aging of the population in developed countries makes it even more interesting to find out those factors that can increase quality of life and the health of the population.’ At the start of the study, the researchers asked participants to provide information on their dietary intake. To determine whether the diet was followed, consumption of fish, fruit, pulses, nuts, cereals, and vegetables was positively valued and consumption of meat, alcohol, and dairy products was negatively valued. The researchers measured self-perceived quality of life after the four-year monitoring period using a questionnaire. The researchers found that participants who stuck to the diet more had better physical and mental well-being and

Protorexics: men obsessed with protein INSTAGRAM, snapchat and even facebook are full of photos and selfies of half-naked, ripped, muscle guys, now high summer is well and truly upon us. The pressure on the rest of us mere mortals to achieve that perfect ‘Instabody’ is immense and something which can often make us go to extremes to get it. Steroids are one of the obvious ways to get instant results, but for those of us who prefer a more natural approach, a high protein, low carb dietary regime is our weapon of choice. So, are you one of those guys who carries a protein shake around you wherever you go during the day? Well you may be suffering from ‘protorexia’, a term coined to describe an unhealthy fixation with protein-heavy foods and supplements, such as protein shakes and chicken. When eaten as part of a balanced diet, protein allows our body to grow and repair itself. But is there a risk of becoming obsessed with protein to the extent that behaviour becomes symptomatic of an eating disorder? The term has been linked to orthorexia - a condition defined as an “unhealthy obsession with healthy eating”, which has yet to be formally recognised as an eating disorder. According to eating disorders charity Beat, much like ‘orthorexia’, protorexia is not a recognised eating disorder and we should be careful how we are using the term. Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, a spokesperson from Beat said placing severe restrictions on diet “is obviously
not healthy and may be an indication of an eating disorder”. Studies suggest body-conscious individuals often begin consuming high levels of protein believing those with ripped torsos must be “healthy”, without realising the internal impact this may cause. But how can you recognise if your gym buddy is using protein shakes to simply improve their workout or if they’re part of a more serious, underlying issue? “Secretiveness around or preoccupation with food, becoming withdrawn, mood swings, low self-esteem, tiredness, and distorted perceptions of weight are some of the signs that someone might be developing some form of eating disorder,” the spokesperson said. A British Diabetic spokesperson also told the Huffpost, that, by focusing on consuming a lot of one nutrient, such as protein, you are likely to be restricting other food groups such as carbohydrates. “This may lead to you missing out on other important parts of a diet, such as fibre,” she said. “Fibre is found in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains and is really important for a healthy digestive system.” She explained that protein may fill someone up so much that they are “unable to eat enough of the other things we need in our diet”. “Animal protein, often, contains saturated fat, so if people are increasing their protein intake using animal protein it may be detrimental to heart health, by
increasing their intake of saturated fat,” she said. “There are risks of having an unbalanced diet including vitamin and mineral deficiencies and in the long term increasing the risk of developing chronic conditions.” Most of us get enough protein by eating a well-balanced diet and varying the foods we eat every day, so there is no need to worry too much about getting enough. Including two to three protein rich foods such as lentils, nuts, beans, meat or fish everyday is what the government recommends for good health.
Beauty tips Back off, bites! Few things are more annoying than the itching and scratching that accompanies a mosquito bite. Check out four of RTN’s tried and tested home remedies to offer instant relief: 1. Vinegar - When you first notice the bite, try applying a small amount of vinegar directly to the bump. If you have many bites, try taking take a very hot bath in a tub filled with water and 2 1/2 cups of vinegar. 2. A bar of dry soap - Rub a bar of dry soap directly on the bite - this will help provide temporary relief to the itching. Remember to wash it off thoroughly after the itch fades away. 3. Baking soda and water - Make a thick paste of baking soda and water, then apply it generously to the affected area. You should feel the swelling and itching subside shortly afterwards. 4. Toothpaste - For quick relief from mosquito bites, try applying a small amount of all-natural peppermint or neem-based toothpaste - allow the paste to dry and leave for as long as desired.

Decline in new car sales not a concern The UK new car market has declined for a third consecutive month with 243,454 new units registered in June, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell at a slower pace than in the previous two months, by -4.8%, as demand continued to stabilise following a record first quarter and the subsequent market turbulence caused by the recent changes to Vehicle Excise Duty. The market is now more in line with 2017 forecasts. Demand in the month was down across private, fleet and business registrations, recording falls of -7.8%, -2.4% and -8.3% respectively. Road Test - Range Rover Vogue SE TDV6 Few vehicles raise a smile in the way that a Range Rover does when you are behind the wheel, I find. It’s always an absolute privilege to find yourself sitting in the high quality cabin and it is a fantastic experience. Imagine your favourite armchair and then add all the electronic gadgetry that you can conjure up and here is a seat that can be electrically adjusted to your heart’s content providing that ultimate driving position. Then of course there is the sheer height of this luxury off roader, which stands head and shoulders above most other vehicles apart from lorries. This means that the driver and front passenger have a marvellous view of the road ahead, which is perfect for overtaking. Despite its sheer size and weight this 4x4 is pretty quick off the mark and if the accelerator is pushed to the floor it makes safe light work of most opportunities that present themselves on the open road. Zero to 60mph is accomplished in a little over seven seconds, which is very impressive. There are so many luxuries fitted to this vehicle that it makes a Rolls Royce blush. Shut the door and the Range Rover ensures that the door is properly closed as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The two section boot opens and closes at the push of a button. This is all well and good but ironically, after reading a newspaper article about how a woman lost her arm in the door of a neighbour’s car, I come close to trapping mine in the boot of the Range Rover but thankfully escape with a light bruise. It seems to shut and continues even if a hand is in the way. There needs to be a sensor to prevent this from happening. I park the beast on my driveway which has a slight incline and on start up the suspension self-levels like Citroens of old; I love it. It’s actually easier to manoeuvre than some smaller vehicles too and even though there are blindspots these are easily overcome by the help of the reversing camera. However, there are too many beeps for my liking when reversing alongside obstacles which can be off-putting, I cannot find a way of turning these sounds off. I do like the cool box in the front centre armrest, which fits
a good size beaker or bottle together with a few chocolate bars. The full length panoramic glass sunroof is a great addition because when the cover electronically slides back a vast amount of natural light fills the cabin. The sunroof electrically tilts and slides, too. At night there are some neat touches too especially the light that drops from the bottom of the wing mirror to create a perfect circle, ideal when arriving at your destination in the pitch black. I put it through its paces with a trip to West Bay in Dorset. It’s only about 80 miles or so away from home which should be covered in an hour and a half but with so much traffic on our roads it takes more than double this time. Not to worry though because any frustration is easily erased in the Range Rover. My two daughters have their headphones on and are watching CBeebies on their televisions which are built into the back of the front headrests. There is a remote control inside the centre rear armrest. In Hampshire the reception is perfect and it is only when we get to the valleys of Dorset where we lose the signal and the little cherubs start to complain. It is helpful that the front passengers can listen to the radio at the same time as the rear passengers watch the TV. However when stationary and I try watching the news, I find I cannot do this but have to watch Mr Maker on CBeebies if I want my daughters to remain quiet. Front and rear occupants must watch the same channel. Like many an aristocrat, despite its fine credentials, it does feel just a little lethargic when sitting at a roundabout watching the world go by. When, finally, a gap in the traffic emerges and the accelerator is kicked to the floor there is a noticeable delay from the eight speed automatic transmission which is ever so slightly unnerving. But it quickly regains composure. Inside there are lots of cleverly designed cubbyholes particularly the ones underneath the driver and front

passenger’s armrest on the door. Even the rear seats can be electrically adjusted and there are buttons in the boot to electronically fold the rear seats and operate the tow bar, making life very easy indeed. Responding to various terrains is a doddle thanks to a dial in the front centre console. Simply push it and it rises and then turn to the environment that you find yourself in. The Range Rover is a magnificent vehicle that copes just as well off road as it does on and is probably even happier blazing through a field than a flat motorway. Externally the vehicle is a design classic that has subtly evolved since its introduction in 1970. With its clean lines and large grille together with a striking side profile it cuts a dashing appearance that demands attention with many gazing longingly and performing double takes. Whether one is an extrovert or not this is a thoroughly impressive form of transport. Road test one today or regret it for evermore.

Total Bedlam – Fifth SAMM Race Day When the competitors and officials arrived at CTD for the fifth race day in the SAMM Spring Series 2017, they were greeted by a scene of total bedlam. A group of children with disabilities were being treated to a host of water sport activities generously provided by various organisations. The loud music had the kids all up dancing, playing ball games, shouting, screaming whilst the various water craft were being launched and readied. When the buoys were being laid to mark the course they had to be moved three times to avoid the ever growing area being used by the jet skis for joy rides. However, eventually the first race got underway at a late 11.45am in gentle 6 to 8 knot winds with six boats in contention. All other than Sirocco had a leisurely sail of four laps, except for having to avoid the jet skis, kids in optimist dinghies, kids in kayaks, groups on large ribs or in Gamba dinghies. None of them paid any attention to the fact that there was a race going on and used the start/finish line to play around. As a finale, they were joined by a guy performing stunts on a water jet flyboard right in front of the channel as the boats came ashore for the lunch break. Luckily, the chaos was all over - except for a couple of jets skis - by the start of the second race which again was fairly
leisurely but in a slightly increased wind. There were some close tussles going on, especially between Norman in his Laser Radial, John in his Quba and George and Jack in the Gamba Shoestring Cuatro, who all finished within a minute of each other. The Areaz 20 Levanter, a new boat to the fleet led all the way and finished first on the water but was placed 4th after the handicaps were applied.
After handicaps were applied, the winners of the first race were Jack, Bob and Jeff in the Gamba ‘Shoestring Cuatro’. The second race was won by John in the RS Quba ‘Lola’. A good day was enjoyed by all who took part on this last session of the spring season. The autumn season is scheduled to start on September 10.

San Javier Golf Bettas Torrevieja Society at Lo Romero RFC making strides LAST week the members and guests of San Javier Golf Society headed off to one of their favourite courses. SMGS always love playing at Lo Romero as the course always seems to be in immaculate condition, which was definitely the case on this occasion, so no one was disappointed. The weather was very hot and therefore all but four of our members used buggies. Scoring was good throughout both divisions, most notably by Daz Hancock, who shot a 4 over gross and the winners on the day were: Division 1: First was Daz Hancock with 38 points, Second - Barry Beale with 37, Third - Paul Newman with 37 and Fourth Paul Matthews with 34 points. In Division 2 the ladies had a field day! First was Jo Murphy with 36 points, Second - Sandra Twentyman with 35, Third - Christine Flanagan with 34 and
Fourth at last was a man, Ty Williams with 34 points. Nearest the pins were won by Paul Newman, David Archer, Paul Hamlin, Bob Gallard, Shaun Devine and Bob Eaton. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was won by Daz Hancock. The next game for SMGS is a team “Dusty Bin” competition at La Serena, teeing off at 9:10am on Wednesday July 19. NEW players joined the regular squad members at last week’s Bettas Torrevieja RFC training session, swelling the ranks of the team and proving the word is getting out there. The management are looking at getting enoughplayers on board to put a team out ready to play friendlies from Septem-
ber as numbers are slowly increasing. Organisers are looking to create a more international team with players of all nationalities, so they have issued a statement asking anyone interested in having some fun and playing rugby to get in touch. Many of the current players had never played the
game before, so experienced or not all are welcome to join in at the next training session. The ladies are usually training every Wednesday and Sunday at 8.30pm on the athletics pitch at the sports ground just around the corner from the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Torrevieja. Venus tears: Seven times Grand Slam champion walks out on Wimbledon press conference. TENTH seeded Venus Williams, broke down in tears after being asked questions about the Palm Beach car crash, she was recently involved in, which left 78 year old Jerome Barson dead and police believe she caused. Williams, making her 20th appearance at Wimbledon, had just completed a reasonably straightforward first round victory over Elise Mertens 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. The American – at 37 the oldest woman in the draw here – was at her imperious best in the opening stages, breaking Mertens in her opening service game and dictating points with her serve, before Mertens began varying her game, managing to claw her way back into the set. A five-time singles champion at Wimbledon, Williams needed five set points before taking the first set against 21-year-old Mertens. A rain delay on Court One then halted the progress of the American after Mertens saved two match points. Mertens, playing her first Wimbledon, held and saved a further two match points before Williams produced an emphatic shot to secure victory. In the news conference, Williams said: “Tennis is still the love of my life. It gives me joy. “Life, you can’t prepare for everything. I prepared for a lot of matches, tried to get ready for whatever my opponent will throw at you, but you can’t prepare for everything. “I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. That’s all I can say about it. That’s what I’ve learned.” After fielding a few questions about the crash, Williams became visibly tearful, as she admitted, “There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and – yeah. I’m completely speechless. It’s just – yeah, I mean, I’m just …” her voice trailed off, before she rushed out of the conference. After taking a few minutes to regain her composure with members of her team, she returned to the room. Witnesses to the accident told Palm Beach police that Williams ran a red light, which caused the car, driven by the deceased’s wife Linda, to run into her own SUV,injuring Barson, who died 13 days later.

Williams told investigators she entered the six-lane intersection on a green light but was forced to stop midway through because of traffic ahead of her, failing to see the Barsons’ car when she continued through at about 5mph. But police concluded the driver of Williams’s car was “at fault for violating the right of way”. Linda Barson, 68, also sustained injuries, including “a cracked sternum, shattered right arm, broken wrist, hand and fingers”. As one of only two former Wimbledon champions in the women’s field, Williams has a promising draw and perhaps a renewed ambition, plus she is in the form of her life, making her a real contender, even at 37. Time will only tell whether the added pressure of her private life will eventually take it’s toll.
Paralympian’s bike recovered: Police return 15,000 euro bike stolen during World Pride MADRID police successfully returned a stolen bike, belonging to Spanish Paralympic athlete GemaHassen-Bey. The specially designed bike was custom built in Poland for the fifty year old, medal winning paralympian, who represented Spain in fencing, at five successive Paralympics after making her debut at Barcelona in 1992. She had appeared at
the Madrid World Pride celebrations, in the Race For Diversity event, organised to celebrate the diverse nature of the LGBT community. She was devastated when the 15,000 euro bike disappeared from a locked and bolted trailer, as it is a prototype she had custom built for her next project. Hassen-Bey is in training to become the first person to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the African continent’s highest mountain, using a bike. A feat during which, she hopes to draw attention to the challenges facing people living with disabilities. “ I Cannot understand how a man can reach the moon or throw himself from a space capsule, but we still have trouble going to buy bread” she
said. The athlete denounced the theft of her bicycle and, through messages on Twitter and Facebook and asked that it be returned to Father Angel, of the Messengers of Peace, in the church of San Anton in the capital. However, Madrid police found the bike, abandoned on a street corner, undamaged, apart from a broken chain, which probably curtailed the thieves progress, at 3am on Sunday morning during the height of the huge pride closing party. The officers duly delivered the bike to Father Angel of the Messengers of Peace later that morning at 10am and returned it to it’s waiting, extremely grateful, owner who can now continue her Bey - Kilimanjaro Challenge summit challenge.

Rangers humiliated: In one of the worst results in their history Rangers lose to Luxembourg minnows PLAYING in their first European fixture in six years, Rangers had high hopes of progressing to the next qualifying round of the Europa League after a first leg, 1-0 win at Ibrox, against Luxembourg part timers ProgresNiederkorn. However, in the second leg last Tuesday, they slipped to a humiliating 2-O defeat, which dumped them out of Europe at the first qualifying stage. The Ibroxside were hoping to show they had made steps forward after last season’s troubled domestic campaign. But instead they found themselves suffering another nightmare and a result which will go down as one of their worst ever abroad. Not only had part-timers Niederkorn never won a match in European competition before, they had only managed one goal in 13 previous encounters Sebastian Thill sealed progress, scoring only the third European goal in the minnows’ history to secure their first ever win in Europe. Rangers led 1-0 from the first leg in Glasgow, but fell behind after 66 minutes at the 8,000-capacity StadeJosyBarthel when the forward Emmanuel Françoise converted the captain Sebastien Thill’s cross. Niko Kranjcar, Josh Windass and Kenny Miller hit the woodwork for Rangers. But the Ibrox men had failed to dominate the game the way they had in the first leg, ensuring their first foray into Europe for six years was short-lived. Boss Pedro Caixinha brought Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Jordan Rossiter into his starting line-up as he looked for more of a cutting edge in the second leg. The visitors had the bulk of the early possession but again lacked the final pass that could punish Progres. Miller had a shot blocked following a Kranjcar corner but it was all too untidy in the last third. That seemed to give the hosts the confidence they had lacked in the first half at Ibrox, with Olivier Thill curling a long-range free-kick narrowly wide with goalkeeper Wes Foderingham struggling to get across. The second-half started with Progres going even closer, this time Francoise bursting clear on the right and drilling a low effort towards the corner that Foderingham saved brilliantly. Home keeper Sebastian Flauss had gone off injured in the first half but Rangers failed to test stand-in CharlySchinker until after the hour, when Ryan Jack’s close-range header was directed straight at him. Moments later Caixinha’s side almost grabbed a crucial away goal as Wallace sent in a cross that Kranjcar headed off the bar. Then came the opener for Progres as Olivier Thill crossed for Francoise to finish at the near post. The second arrived soon after as Sebastian Thill curled a freekick into the box that evaded everyone and crept in at the back post. Rangers rallied in the closing minutes with Windass’ diving header coming back off the bar before Miller, in stoppage time, lobbed an effort off the face of the bar. There was no way through though, and the visitors slumped to a shocking result. The result marks a terrible return to European football for Rangers after six years away and a hugely disappointing start to the manager Pedro Caixinha’s first full season in charge of the club.
